Rome’s Citizenship Crisis and America’s Welfare Dilemma
đŸ›ïž Citizenship and Welfare in Rome: Lessons for America Today
Hello everyone! Today we’re tackling a fascinating part of Roman history—the citizenship crisis of the 3rd century—and comparing it to America’s current struggles with welfare and immigration. If you think these issues are only relevant today, think again! Rome faced similar challenges that contributed to its downfall. 😬
The Edict of Caracalla: Citizenship for All
In 212 AD, Emperor Caracalla passed what’s known as the Edict of Caracalla. This law gave Roman citizenship to 30 million people living in the empire’s provinces. đŸ›ïž On the surface, this seems like a noble move, but there were hidden motives. By granting citizenship, Caracalla was able to tax these new citizens and pull them into Rome’s social welfare programs. Sound familiar? America, too, is grappling with how to balance citizenship, social programs, and taxation. 🏩
Welfare Programs in Rome: A Double-Edged Sword
Once Roman citizens, people in the provinces became eligible for Rome’s social programs, similar to how citizens today can benefit from government assistance programs. While these welfare systems helped many, they also put an enormous strain on Rome’s economy. As inflation grew, the empire’s currency devalued, and the welfare state became unsustainable. 💾
In modern America, we see similar discussions around the welfare state. Programs like Social Security and Medicaid are vital, but they also need sustainable funding. As inflation continues to rise, just like it did in Rome, we may face similar challenges in keeping these programs afloat. 😹
Lessons for Today
What can we learn from Rome’s citizenship crisis and welfare state? One key takeaway is that any social system, no matter how well-intentioned, can crumble if it’s not managed properly. If America is going to avoid a similar fate, we’ll need to address these issues head-on. 📊
🌟 Final Thoughts
History has a funny way of repeating itself—or at least rhyming. As we look back at Rome’s decline, we can see clear parallels with issues we’re facing today. Let’s take these lessons to heart and work toward solutions that strengthen our society rather than weaken it. ✊

Internet users should be able to choose what content they see instead of tech companies censoring on their behalf, a report said on Wednesday.
Author Michael Shellenberger said the power to filter content should be given to social media and internet users rather than tech firms or governments in a bid to ensure freedom of speech.
In his report Free Speech and Big Tech: The Case for User Control, Mr Shellenberger warned that if governments or large tech companies had power over the legal speech of citizens they would have unprecedented influence over thoughts, opinions and “accepted views” in society.
He warned that attempts to censor the internet to protect the public from disinformation could be abused and end up limiting free speech.
He wrote: “Regulation of speech on social media platforms such as Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube has increasingly escalated in attempts to prevent ‘hate speech’, ‘misinformation’ and online ‘harm’.”
This represents a “fundamental shift in our approach to freedom of speech and censorship” he said, warning that legal content was being policed. He added: “The message is clear: potential ‘harm’ from words alone is beginning to take precedence over free speech.”
Mr Shellenberger’s paper is published today ahead of next week’s Alliance for Responsible Citizenship conference in Greenwich, where he will speak along with MPs Kemi Badenoch and Michael Gove. Free speech is one of the themes the conference will cover.
Explaining how his system of “user control” would work, Mr Shellenberger wrote: “When you use Google, YouTube, Facebook, X/Twitter, or any other social media platform, the company would be required to ask you how you want to moderate your content. Would you like to see the posts of the people you follow in chronological or reverse chronological order? Or would you like to use a filter by a group or person you trust?
“On what basis would you like your search results to be ranked? Users would have infinite content moderation filters to choose from. This would require social media companies to allow them the freedom to choose.”

By: Michael Shellenberger
“Speech is fundamental to our humanity because of its inextricable link to thought. One cannot think freely without being able to freely express those thoughts and ideas through speech. Today, this fundamental right is under attack.”
In this paper, Michael Shellenberger exposes the extent of speech censorship online and proposes a ‘Bill of Rights' for online freedom of speech that would restore content moderation to the hands of users.
Summary of Research Paper
In this paper:
The War on Free Speech
Giving users control of moderation
A Bill of Rights for Online Freedom of Speech
The Right to Speak Freely Online
The advent of the internet gave us a double-edged sword: the greatest opportunity for freedom of speech and information ever known to humanity, but also the greatest danger of mass censorship ever seen.
Thirty years on, the world has largely experienced the former. However, in recent years, the tide has been turning as governments and tech companies become increasingly fearful of what the internet has unleashed. In particular, regulation of speech on social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube has increased in attempts to prevent “hate speech”, “misinformation”, and online “harm”.
Pieces of pending regulation legislation across the West represent a fundamental shift in our approach to freedom of speech and censorship. The proposed laws explicitly provide a basis for the policing of legal content, and in some cases, the deplatforming or even prosecution of its producers. Beneath this shift is an overt decision to eradicate speech deemed to have the potential to “escalate” into something dangerous—essentially prosecuting in anticipation of crime, rather than its occurrence. The message is clear: potential “harm” from words alone is beginning to take precedence over free speech—neglecting the foundational importance of the latter to our humanity.
This shift has also profoundly altered the power of the state and Big Tech companies in society. If both are able to moderate which views are seen as “acceptable” and have the power to censor legal expressions of speech and opinion, their ability to shape the thought and political freedom of citizens will threaten the liberal, democratic norms we have come to take for granted.
Citizens should have the right to speak freely—within the bounds of the law—whether in person or online. Therefore, it is imperative that we find another way, and halt the advance of government and tech regulation of our speech.
Network Effects and User Control
There is a clear path forward which protects freedom of speech, allows users to moderate what they engage with, and limits state and tech power to impose their own agendas. It is in essence, very simple: if we believe in personal freedom with responsibility, then we must return content moderation to the hands of users.
Social media platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube could offer users a wide range of filters regarding content they would like to see, or not see. Users can then evaluate for themselves which of these filters they would like to deploy, if any. These simple steps can allow individuals to curate the content they wish to engage with, without infringing on another’s right to free speech.
User moderation also provides tech companies with new metrics with which to target advertisements and should increase user satisfaction with their respective platforms. Governments can also return to the subsidiary role of fostering an environment in which people flourish and can freely exchange ideas.
These proposals turn on the principle of regulating social media platforms according to their “network effects”, which are generated when a product or service delivers greater economic and social value the more people use it. Many network effects, including those realised by the internet and social media platforms are public goods—that is, a product or service that is non-excludable, where everyone benefits equally and enjoy access to it. As social media platforms are indispensable for communication, the framework that regulates online discourse must take into account the way in which these private platforms deliver a public good in the form of network effects.
A Bill of Rights for Online Freedom of Speech
This paper provides a digital “Bill of Rights”, outlining the key principles needed to safeguard freedom of speech online:
Users decide their own content moderation by choosing “no filter”, or content moderation filters offered by platforms.
All content moderation must occur through filters whose classifications are transparent to users.
No secret content moderation.
Companies must keep a transparent log of content moderation requests and decisions.
Users own their data and can leave the platform with it.
No deplatforming for legal content.
Private right of action is provided for users who believe companies are violating these legal provisions.
If such a charter were embraced, the internet could once again fulfil its potential to become the democratiser of ideas, speech, and information of our generation, while giving individuals the freedom to choose the content they engage with, free from government or tech imposition.

When people ask me, you know, to make the case for free speech, I sort of smile because of course it's, I'm a little disoriented by the experience of needing to defend free speech.
Literally, just a few years ago, I would have thought that anybody who had to defend free speech was sort of cringe, like that's silly. Like, who would need to defend free speech? But here we find ourselves having to defend all of the pillars of civilization, free speech, law and order, meritocracy, cheap and abundant energy, food and housing. These things all seem obviously as the pillars of a free, liberal, democratic society, but they're clearly not accepted as that. And so you get the sense that there has been a takeover by a particularly totalitarian worldview which is suggesting that that something comes before free speech.
Well, what is that thing? That thing they say is "reducing harm." And so what we're seeing is safety-ism emerging out of the culture and being demanded and enforced by powerful institutions in society.
I think ARC has so much promise to reaffirm the pillars of civilization. It's not complicated. It's freedom of speech. It's cheap and abundant energy, food and housing, law and order. It's meritocracy.
If we don't have those things, we do not have a functioning liberal, democratic civilization. And that means that it needs to do the work to make the case intellectually, communicate it well in a pro-human, pro-civilization, pro-Western way.
The world wants these things. We are dealing with crises, you know, chaos on our borders, both in Europe and the United States, because people around the world want to live in a free society. They want abundance and prosperity and freedom. They don't want to live in authoritarian or totalitarian regimes.
So we know what the secret ingredients are of success. We need to reaffirm them because the greatest threats are really coming from within. And that means that the reaction and the affirmation of civilizational values also needs to come from within.

reading demon slayer: chapter 27 name breakdown
here in chapter 27 i have two names i want to go over. like last time, one of them will be the title of the chapter. the other is one that i just found amusing. i'm going to leave the funny one for the end of this post, like a little treat. let's get going.
the title of chapter 27 is
明ćčłäŒŠäč‹ćŠ©
read as はしびらいぼすけ. the final member of demon slayer's main trio has arrived at last!
inosuke has an odd collection of kanji in both his names. in what is presumably his family name, there is 明 (はし), meaning beak or bill, and ćčł (びら), meaning broad, flat, common, plain. outside of its own individual meaning, 明 almost exclusively seems to appear in the kanji forms of the names of birds. ćčł also appears in words relating to peace, harmony, justice, and equality. using the most basic meanings, inosuke's family name could be interpreted as flatbill.
flatbills are a type of bird in the family tyrannidae common to central and south america, but as far as i can tell that is completely irrelevant to inosuke. in japanese, many birds of family tyrannidae have names containing ăƒă‚· or ăƒ’ăƒ©, or both, but again i found no relevance to demon slayer.
for some reason the name brings to mind the shoebill, which is notable for its long, wide beak. despite its strange appearance, it is reportedly quite docile around humans. i think this is just a me thing, though.
perhaps in future chapters there will be a hint or explanation as to why inosuke was named this way. for now, though, let's leave it as being vaguely bird-related and move on.
in inosuke's given name we have three characters: 䌊 (い), äč‹ (た), and 抩 (すけ). 䌊 and äč‹ don't actually carry much meaning; 䌊 is typically only used for its sound, い, as is the case for äč‹. 抩 is pretty normal, though. it means help, like in 抩ける (たすける), to save, to rescue, or æŽćŠ© (えんじょ), assistance, support.
䌊 can be used as an abbreviation for 䌊ć€Ș戩 (むタăƒȘケ), italy. and äč‹ can be another way to write た as a possessive particle. 抩 can be used as a slang term meaning babe or chick. put all that together, and we get...an italian chick. congratulations on your transition, inosuke! and your new citizenship, i guess.
just kidding, of course. there is actually some wordplay in inosuke's name involving the slang meaning of 抩, though. the いぼ part is supposed to remind the reader of the word çŒȘ (いぼしし), wild boar--a clear reference to his initial appearance and later fighting style.
the 抩 part could be taken as meaning help, such that 䌊äč‹ćŠ© means something like boar help, which would allude to inosuke's being raised by boars. the 抩 part could also be taken as meaning chick, so that 䌊äč‹ćŠ© means boar chick, which would allude to inosuke's feminine features. both are valid interpretations, and i'm of the opinion that the double meaning was intended by the author.
that's enough on inosuke. it's time for our little treat!
as any given demon slayer reader or watcher is aware, inosuke struggles to pronounce his companions' names correctly. we get the first taste of that in this chapter, when he calls tanjirou
ă‹ăŸăŒă“æš©ć…«éƒŽ
read as ă‹ăŸăŒă“ă”ă‚“ă±ăĄă‚ă†. ă‹ăŸăŒă“ are generally called fish cakes in english, but there are lots of things that are called fish cakes in english, and they all have different flavors, colors, shapes, and methods of production, so i'll just call them kamaboko.
kamaboko are made of cured fish paste. their most common shape is that of a semi-cylindrical tube, and they are typically either solid white or white with a pink exterior. they can be eaten hot or cold and are a popular addition to soup and noodle dishes. (this is important, bear with me.)
æš©ć…«éƒŽ is a combination of æš©ć…« (ごんぱづ), an old japanese masculine given name, and 郎 (ろう), the masculine suffix in tanjirou's own name. the amusing part here is that æš©ć…« is also the name of a famous japanese restaurant (it was in kill bill!) that is known for its soba noodles, which are handmade in-house daily. so we've got ă‹ăŸăŒă“ to go on the noodles and æš©ć…« to make them. and inosuke to gobble it all up, i assume.
man, explaining jokes always makes them less funny. ugh.
anyway, that's the end of this chapter's name breakdown. if you made it to the end, thanks for reading! let me know if you have any ideas as to the significance of inosuke's family name. besides that, please look forward to the next posts! see you in the next name breakdown :) èȘă‚“ă§ăă‚ŒăŠă‚ă‚ŠăŒăšă†ïŒæŹĄăźæŠ•çšżă‚’æ„œă—ăżă«ă—ăŠăă ă•ă„ïŒ

Donald Trump’s decision to skip Wednesday’s Republican presidential debate on Fox News seems natural in one sense — overwhelming front runners often resist lifting up their rivals — and astonishing in another.
Astonishing because Fox has been key to Trump’s rise and has created the conservative media bubble that is so vital to Trump’s political well-being. It’s not just that Fox has been awfully good to Trump (The Washington Post’s Philip Bump reports that Fox has mentioned Trump 109 more times a day than his competitors combined). There is also this: Fox News Republicans are distinct from other members of their party, and far more likely to see the world as Trump does.
Understanding the power of Fox and conservative media outlets that have risen up more recently is crucial to grasping many other realities of our politics. It helps explain the decline of moderate Republicanism and the ideological ferocity of today’s GOP. The faith so many Republicans place in Fox is a major reason why so many in the party are prepared to believe Trump’s version of recent events against so much evidence to the contrary.
And the growing polarization of American politics owes in part to the particular loyalty conservatives have to one news outlet. Liberals are much more dispersed in their media preferences.
The Fox effect is not new. Indeed, its long-term influence may have paved the way for the power of Trumpism. Even before Trump became a presidential candidate, Republicans who declared Fox their most trusted news outlet were ready to rebel against more middle-of-the road versions of their party’s creed.
Two surveys — one from nine years ago, the other from earlier this month — tell the same story about the Fox effect. Viewed together, they describe the trajectory of conservative politics.
The 2014 survey, part of the ongoing polling partnership between Brookings and PRRI involving my colleague Bill Galston and me, asked respondents which television news source they trusted most. Republicans overwhelmingly chose Fox. Democrats were far more divided.
Specifically, 53% of Republicans said they trusted Fox most for accurate information about politics and current events. No other television outlet came close. By contrast, there was no dominant trusted news source among Democrats, for whom four different sources posted double digits: the traditional networks at 31%, CNN at 26%, public television at 14% and MSNBC at 10%. Jon Stewart’s then popular Daily Show was listed by 9% of Democrats.
The Fox difference among Republicans was visible across a broad range of other issues. Among Fox News Republicans, 60% said reducing the budget deficit should be among the highest priorities, compared with 46% of other Republicans. Fox News Republicans were far more forceful in their opposition to same-sex marriage: 76% were opposed to same-sex marriage, including 47% who said they were strongly opposed. Among non-Fox Republicans, only 57% opposed same-sex marriage, and only 31% strongly opposed it. One of the starkest differences between the two Republican groups came on the issue of minimum wage. Fox News Republicans opposed increasing the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour by a margin of 64% to 33%. But non-Fox Republicans favor the wage increase, 56% to 41%.
Not surprisingly, there were also stark differences between the two groups on immigration, one of Trump’s signature issues. Only 42% of Republicans who most trusted Fox News supported a path to citizenship for immigrants living in the country illegally, compared with 60% of other Republicans. The rightward tilt of Fox Republicans was also clear on another question: 35% of Republicans who trusted Fox considered themselves part of the Tea Party movement, compared with 15% of non-Fox Republicans. Since the Tea Party served as a gateway to the Trump movement, this finding is especially significant.
Jump forward to this summer: The Fox influence is alive and well. A New York Times/Sienna College survey in July also asked respondents about the media they trusted. The New York Times/Sienna survey’s question on media consumption was different from the one posed in the PRRI/Brookings survey. The recent survey’s question was not specifically focused on television sources, and also gave respondents the opportunity to pick other conservative media, given the rise of alternatives on the right to Fox. Thus, the Fox share of Republicans is lower. But the impact of Fox and other conservative media remains clear.
Tumblr media
Only 5% of Fox Republicans said they thought Trump had committed “serious crimes”; 38% of Republican mainstream media viewers said this. In light of the investigations into Trump, 85% of Fox News Republicans and 83% of consumers of other Republican media said, “Republicans need to stand behind Trump.” Among mainstream media consumers, just 49% held this view. Only 12% of Fox News Republicans and 8% of consumers of other conservative media said Trump’s actions after the 2020 election “threatened American democracy.” Among mainstream media consumers, 37% said this.
And the ideological tilt of Fox Republicans was clear. Asked if they would be inclined to support a “more moderate” or “more conservative” candidate in the Republican presidential primary, Fox Republicans split 69% to 28%. Consumers of other conservative media were actually to the right of Fox devotees, splitting 81% to 19% in favor of the conservative. But Republicans who were mainstream media consumers leaned toward a moderate, 51% to 46%.
As Bill Galston and I noted nine years ago, these sorts of numbers can be viewed from different directions. It can be said that those with very conservative views are already attracted to Fox and right-wing alternatives. It can also be said that Fox and other right-wing outlets harden the conservatism of their consumers and perhaps make at least some converts. What is undeniable is the differential role of media on the Republican and Democratic sides of politics, with conservatives and Republicans showing a far greater degree of solidarity in their media habits. This, we wrote nine years ago, “could have important implications for future battles over Republican nominations and arguments over the party’s philosophical identity.” We are living with those implications today.

Week 11: Digital citizenship and conflict: social media governance
Hi there, welcome back! Before starting on this week's topic, I would like to ask you a question: have you ever reported someone who posted false information or fake news on social media?
So let's dive into this week's topic. The frameworks, rules, and procedures put in place to control and direct how people use social media platforms are referred to as social media governance. An organized foundation for managing your company's social media presence is provided by a social media governance plan. It includes guidelines, procedures, and tactics to help you comprehend and lessen the risks connected to social networking.
Social media is a great tool for digital citizenship since it makes connections easier, makes information easier to obtain, and offers learning opportunities. Notwithstanding these advantages, social media's drawbacks—like disseminating false information, encouraging cyberbullying, and endangering privacy—have a bigger influence on digital citizenship. There are advantages and disadvantages to social media, so how we utilize it will determine its impact. It would be better for us if we had to act civilly toward one another, stay away from offensive material, and refrain from merely speculating on topics we don't fully understand. We don't want things like that to happen to us too, right? According to StopBullying.org, one in every four teens (25%) is bullied, and up to 43 percent have been bullied while online. Nine out of ten LGBTQ adolescents reported being harassed at school and online (Pros and Cons of Social Media | Lifespan n.d.). According to research, most teenagers have favorable experiences on social media, with the majority indicating that their peers are generally nice to one another. However, younger teenage girls and black teens are more likely to report negative experiences, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and more inclusive governance (Part 2: Social Media and Digital Citizenship: What teens experience and how they behave on social network sites n.d.-b).
Tumblr media
Bullying is nothing new for anyone, but social media and technology have elevated it to a new level. The menace of cyberbullying has increased in frequency and reach. In the digital age, cyberbullying has grown to be a serious problem with clear repercussions for users' online safety and wellbeing. A comprehensive approach incorporating strict social media control and digital citizenship is necessary to address this problem. Social media conflict demonstrates how digital citizenship typically revolves around control over platforms, resources, expression, brands, markets, and business interests. Users may differ, for example, over the freedom to express themselves on social, political, or private matters. When divergent points of view clash, it can lead to discussions, arguments, and, in extreme situations, hostility. The issue is not with social media as such. It is how individuals use it instead of in-person communication and socializing. "Friends" on social media may not be real friends, and they may even be strangers (Pros and Cons of Social Media | Lifespan n.d.).
Tumblr media
To summarize, digital citizenship and conflict on social media platforms are influenced by platform operators' governance efforts and user responses. To encourage positive interactions and responsible use, more inclusive and participatory government models must be developed that address public concerns while balancing the benefits and risks of social media.

Imagine scaling the majestic Canadian Rockies, strolling through the historic cobblestone streets of Quebec City, or immersing yourself in the vibrant multicultural mosaic of Toronto – a Canada Tourist Visa makes these adventures and more a reality.
Understanding Canada's Tourist Visa Landscape
Canada offers various temporary resident visas, and the Canada Tourist Visa (TRV) caters specifically to leisure travel, visiting family and friends, or cultural exploration. This visa allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for short-term stays, typically up to six months.  Understanding the Canada Tourist Visa requirements is crucial for a smooth and successful application process.
Key Eligibility Factors for a Canada Tourist Visa
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) establishes a specific checklist for Canada Tourist Visa Requirements. Here's a breakdown of the essential factors to consider:
Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Canada and have at least two blank pages for visa issuance. Double-check the expiry date on your passport well in advance to avoid any last-minute delays.
Proof of Travel Plans: A clear and detailed itinerary demonstrates the purpose of your visit. This should include information such as flight bookings, accommodation reservations, and planned activities. If applicable, include evidence of pre-paid tours or travel arrangements.
Financial Stability: Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your stay in Canada. This may include bank statements reflecting recent transactions, income tax returns, or a letter of employment outlining your salary.
Ties to Your Home Country: Establish strong ties to your home country to convince the immigration officer that you intend to return after your visit to Canada. This could include proof of property ownership, ongoing employment, or enrollment in an educational institution back home.
Medical Insurance: Obtain valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Canada. This insurance should cover any potential medical emergencies you may encounter during your visit.
Preparing a Strong Canada Tourist Visa Application: A Step-by-Step Guide
A well-prepared application significantly increases your chances of obtaining a Canada Tourist Visa. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth application process:
Gather Required Documentation: Meticulously collect all documents as outlined by IRCC. These typically include a completed visa application form, your valid passport with photocopies, passport-size photographs meeting specific size and format requirements, proof of travel plans and accommodation, financial documents, proof of ties to your home country, and medical insurance confirmation.
Review Application Thoroughly: Carefully review your application form and supporting documents before submission. Ensure all information is accurate, complete, and up-to-date. Avoid any inconsistencies or errors that could lead to delays in processing.
Consider Professional Guidance: Navigating the visa application process can sometimes be complex. Consider seeking assistance from an experienced immigration consultant like NestAbroad. Demystifying the Singapore PR Application Process
Are you considering making Singapore your permanent home? The prospect of obtaining Singapore Permanent Residency (PR) can be both exciting and daunting. With its reputation as a global business hub and a high quality of life, Singapore attracts individuals and families from around the world. However, navigating the PR application process may seem complex and intimidating at first. In this blog post, we aim to demystify the Singapore PR application process, providing you with a clear understanding of what to expect and how to approach it.
Tumblr media
Understanding Singapore Permanent Residency
Before delving into the application process, it's essential to grasp the significance of Singapore PR. PR status grants foreign nationals the right to live, work, and study in Singapore indefinitely. PRs also enjoy various benefits, including access to subsidized healthcare, education, and the Central Provident Fund (CPF) scheme.
However, it's important to note that PR status is not equivalent to citizenship. PRs do not have voting rights in Singaporean elections, and they may have certain restrictions in areas such as housing subsidies and public sector employment.
Eligibility Criteria
The first step in the PR application process is assessing your eligibility. While there is no fixed formula for approval, several factors influence the outcome of your application:
Employment Status: Stable employment in Singapore, particularly in sectors that contribute to the country's economy, strengthens your PR application.
Educational Qualifications: Higher educational qualifications from recognized institutions enhance your profile as a potential PR candidate.
Length of Residency: A longer period of residency in Singapore demonstrates your commitment to the country and increases your chances of PR approval.
Family Ties: Having immediate family members who are Singaporean citizens or PRs can positively impact your application.
It's important to present a compelling case that showcases your contributions to Singapore's economy, society, and community.
Preparing Your Application
Once you've assessed your eligibility, the next step is to prepare your PR application package. This typically includes the following documents:
Completed Application Form: Fill out the PR application form accurately and truthfully, providing all required information.
Identity and Travel Documents: Submit copies of your passport, employment pass, and any relevant travel or identification documents.
Educational Certificates: Include copies of your academic transcripts and certificates to verify your educational qualifications.
Employment Records: Provide documentation of your employment history in Singapore, including contracts, salary statements, and letters of recommendation from employers.
Family Documents: If applicable, provide proof of your relationship with Singaporean citizens or PRs, such as marriage certificates or birth certificates for children.
Additional Supporting Documents: Include any additional documentation that highlights your contributions to Singapore's economy or society, such as awards, commendations, or volunteer work.
Ensure that all documents are organized, up-to-date, and translated into English if necessary.
Submitting Your Application
Once you've compiled your application package, you can submit it to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) either online or in person. Be sure to pay the required application fee and double-check that you've included all necessary documents.
Awaiting the Outcome
After submitting your application, the ICA will review it thoroughly, considering various factors such as your background, employment history, and contributions to Singaporean society. The processing time typically ranges from four to six months, during which the ICA may request additional information or documentation if needed.
Final Thoughts
While the Singapore PR application process may seem complex, it's important to approach it with patience, diligence, and honesty. By understanding the eligibility criteria, preparing a comprehensive application package, and presenting a compelling case for your PR status, you can increase your chances of success.
Remember that each application is assessed on its own merits, and there is no guaranteed outcome. However, with careful preparation and a positive attitude, you can navigate the PR application process successfully and take the first step towards making Singapore your permanent home.

Simplifying UAE Tax Residency: Steps to Get the Certificate
Tumblr media
Are you residing in the UAE and curious about the significance of a Tax Residency Certificate? This certificate serves as confirmation that an individual or company is recognized as a tax resident of the UAE, enabling them to leverage benefits outlined in Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) signed by the UAE. This blog will comprehensively cover the process of obtaining a Tax Residency Certificate in the UAE, offering insights into its importance for both residents and companies. We'll guide you through the step-by-step application process, outline necessary documents for individuals and companies, delve into application fees, payment methods, and underscore the advantages of holding a UAE Tax Residency Certificate.
What exactly is a Tax Residency Certificate in the UAE?
A Tax Residency Certificate in the UAE is an official document issued by the Ministry of Finance, confirming an individual's resident status. Its critical role lies in unlocking tax benefits, preventing double taxation, and harnessing advantages from tax treaties with other nations.
Establishing tax residency in the UAE is particularly crucial for individuals, as it opens doors to tax incentives and exemption certificates. Possessing this certificate empowers individuals to claim benefits from double tax treaties and defines their tax obligations. Furthermore, it proves essential for accessing tax exemptions, making it a pivotal document for effectively navigating the UAE tax system.
Acquiring a tax residency certificate in the UAE significantly impacts the tax liabilities of residents, potentially minimizing their tax burdens. It not only confers tax residency status but also renders eligibility for a range of tax benefits and incentives. Additionally, it ensures compliance with UAE tax laws and regulations, aligning individuals with the country's tax system and potentially facilitating the acquisition of a tax exemption certificate.
How to Apply for a Tax Residency Certificate in the UAE?
Tumblr media
Initiating the application process for a tax residency certificate in the UAE involves submitting necessary documents to the UAE Ministry of Finance. It is imperative to hold a valid residence permit and ensure the accuracy of the completed application form. Proof of residence, such as authentic lease agreements or utility bills, must also be presented. Additionally, obtaining a tax registration number from the Federal Tax Authority is a prerequisite.
Applicants commence the application by creating an account on the official FTA portal, furnishing personal information, contact details, and email address. Required documents, including a valid residence permit and Emirates ID, should be uploaded. The Ministry of Finance conducts a thorough review post-submission, with successful applicants receiving the tax residency certificate through an online process.
When applying for a UAE tax residency certificate, meticulous attention to the accuracy and completeness of the application form is crucial. Providing incorrect or misleading information could lead to rejection, and failure to submit required documents in the prescribed format may cause delays. Adhering to the Ministry of Finance's guidelines and avoiding the use of outdated or invalid documents is paramount. A smooth application process can be ensured by steering clear of these common mistakes.
The Tax Residency Certificate Application Process within the UAE This process involves engaging with the Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship to substantiate permanent residence in the UAE. Issuance is timely, and the Ministry of Finance endeavors for expedited processing while maintaining accuracy. Regular updates are provided throughout the process, and efficient applications guarantee swift certificate issuance.

On citizenship.
I say 'we' because I became an Australian citizen on 26th of January 2021. Here is my personal journal entry from that day:
26th of January, Tuesday
I wake up just before dawn. As I lie in bed, I think about my sometimes annoyingly stress free life. From time to time, I long for things to change quickly and dramatically. Slow change is hard for me, I'm indecisive and tend to overthink things so any change I manage feels very hard won. But I'm also impulsive and feel a thrill when I have to handle a crisis. So even as a peaceful life is something I seek, when I find the equilibrium it can bore me too.
Naturally, as I thought further about quick and dramatic change, I thought about this country whose citizen I was soon to become. This land and its first people, its wildlife, its landscape and its plant life. I thought about what it would have been like to be here, minding your own business, going about your life as the generations of your ancestors did before you. About one day, getting up before dawn to go for your solitary morning walk to think and clear your head, and looking out over the ocean to see the strangest sight. Boats. With strangely attired people on them.
When I got the letter telling me my citizenship ceremony was to be held on Australia Day, I thought of declining and doing it on a different day to boycott this holiday which I hate and believe to be utterly crazy in a society that claims to be tolerant and open and forward thinking. Celebrating a day that marks the beginning of an ongoing tragedy for Aboriginal people, and for the natural world that they lived in and cared for.
But that would change nothing. This heavy feeling would not go away, dramatic change for the better wouldn't ensue.
I accept the full responsibility and I accept that becoming a citizen of a colonial country means I am no longer an innocent bystander.
Until yesterday I could still have had my high ground. From an immigrant's perspective, it was easy to see the injustice the lack of respect, the system of oppression. As a citizen, I accept that I am now a beneficiary of that very same system. I don't know that there is a solution here for me. This isn’t a rant about finding solutions to uncomfortable feelings. And I think that’s the point. You have to sit in this discomfort and do better when the ball is in your court.
-
It’s a hot day. We leave not long after 9. We’re a little early so we go and check the surf at Belongil. It’s the most beautiful day with perfect waves.
We drive back to Cavanbah Centre, there are people lining up outside. Some of them are dressed up. We sign in and I fill in the electoral roll form. There are shitty little flags on all the seats. We put them on the ground. It’s a weird event. The officiate is Simon Richardson, the mayor of Byron. He’s really nice and says the right things, basically saying we’re all waiting for the date to be changed. Of course, in the absence of this change, we still have to proceed. The whole setup is a little too close to a religious ceremony for my liking. There is a little bit of bullshit and myth making streaming down from the stage. But all the organisers, as expected, are extremely polite. Politeness, however, is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it’s better than being rude. On the other, it can help you get away with murder. Australians and their institutions largely inherited their politeness from their British counterparts.
All efforts are undertaken to make the ceremony pleasant. There’s a kindly older musician who can’t sing for shit singing “Home Among the Gumtrees” and, just before the ceremony, “The Times They Are A Changin’”. In the first case, sweet, feel good song that’s meant to make you forget about the people who were slaughtered in the process of creating that lovely utopia with a clothes line out the back. In the second, it was clear from the delivery as well as from the context that the times are really not changing quite as dramatically as the song implies. The intention was good though, and I take a moment to appreciate that. For many present, this is a cause for celebration. Me, all of it mostly makes me uncomfortable.
We all get a native pot plant and a certificate from the mayor. The other guy, some old dude, delivers the whole ‘best country in world’ spiel. And yet, despite all the pleasantry, somehow it all seems so very awkward. Two girls becoming new citizens are wearing tops with the Aboriginal flag. We all mumble the pledge under our breaths and hardly anyone sings the anthem. I certainly don’t, even though I’m so tempted to just let go and enjoy myself. I mean, I love hymns and powerful songs, I love a catchy tune. But not this one. They make us stand in the front, like new Christians about to get baptised. Zach notices it’s taking a while and so he brings me a chair. He takes a photo of me with my plant and my certificate, pulling a ‘I’m not sure what to think of this’ face.
-
We drive to Wayne’s around 4:30 and get straight to it. There isn’t exactly enough for us both to do, but I do about half an hour of mowing before Zach takes over and I go hang out with Wayne and his girlfriend. We talk everything, from movies and TV, Broken Hill where Wayne is going to scout locations for a show he’ll be directing (‘Total Control’), to multi level marketing scams, family histories, becoming a citizen, how Zach and I met. We want to hang out some more, but we have booked the tickets already.
We get to the cinema and collect our free wine and head straight into the theatre. There are no ads. That’s appropriate. The cinema is almost full.
The movie is heavy. Zach doesn’t appreciate all the people commenting on it out loud and getting all too emotionally involved. I don’t exactly appreciate having this white guy being so central to the story. You can’t have everything. The boy who plays Gutjuk is really good. He needs to be in more movies. It’s a necessary movie. Visually amazing. But in the lift on the way to the car, I tell Zach that somehow I feel like this film belongs in the past, like it’s overdue. (I read later that indeed, the idea for the film and maybe even the script were developed around the year 2000). Like it does a bit too much to make white people not feel quite as horrible as they could about the invasion. That’s my only issue, I think. Visually, it’s flawless. The acting is convincing, especially from the Aboriginal part of the cast. Also, hero’s journey wise, it is flawless too. Everybody goes through their character arc perfectly, they all close, the hero becomes the hero and gets the girl (presumably), the girl gets her revenge, the riddled-with-guilt white dude atones for his sins, the white girl steps up to take responsibility and the bad guys meet their demise. Which is all a little too convenient but of course it’s satisfying to watch. But that too contributes to the feeling that it is somehow dated. Filmmakers who want to really make a splash go out of their way to subvert those kinds of expectations. And at the same time, I think Aboriginal people were owed this revenge tale. So. I think that generally, it is good that this film exists. And this was the day for all of us to watch it.

Note
Thank you. I can see, a little, why you replied the way you did, because my language wasn't clear. I was referring to the wave of immigration that happened after its official founding. Something in the order of nearly doubling its population, if I'm not mistaken, with over half a million immigrants. If Jews are to be considered colonizers, they must have left a place from which they were native, yes? Where was that place, exactly? Certainly nowhere in Europe. Nowhere in Russia. Not in the United States. But this isn't the only relevant question: at what point do a people cease having a claim to belonging to and in a certain region? Depending on where you live, this becomes a *very* thorny question indeed, quite aside from whatever the truth is for Jews and Israel. Again, I don't grant your premise that Israel is a 'religious ethnostate', though its politics around ethnicity, religion, and citizenship are-pretty understandably-rather complicated. As for your expressed belief about what refugees should do, you absolutely did express a belief. You did it again in this post: they should move to Palestine and live there, once again being a minority subject to the whims of unfriendly-at best-governments and cultures. As for implying what your answer would be, well, I don't need to imply anymore since you've answered that: your answer is that they ought to have continued being a religious and ethic minority in yet another region. (Well, 'another region' in a sense since there were already Jews there and had been continuously.) It's not an expression of approval for any Israeli policy today to say I can understand-very, very easily-why they chose not to do that.
the founding of israel didnt start in 1948, and it wasnt started by the victims of the holocaust. it was started primarily by wealthy western europeans in 1919ish. so the question "where were they going to go" doesnt actually mean anything, because the "they" you are talking about, being the survivors of the holocaust, wouldnt exist for another 20 years. i feel like if you, self-admittedly, dont know much about the founding of israel you should maybe learn more before speaking confidently on it and whether it was legitimate
That’s a nice burn, bud. Mind quoting what I said? I don’t remember my wording. If I said or suggested that Israel sprang into being wholly formed in 1948, then of course that’s wrong and I’ll admit to it-and be surprised that I was so careless in my language.
If, on the other hand, in various ways and places going back into the 1880s, parts of Israel were being settled, that changes things a little, perhaps.
But anyway, where should the Jews who immigrated to Israel after the Holocaust have gone? Not those unworthy Western European (you say, citing zero sources) Jews, I mean.

Ayyyyy đŸ’« anon here w more c!Punz potential content
Consider,,,,reader being on Wilbur's/Tommy's side during the election and they get exiled with them, and everyone turns on them including Punz right? Well Punz has had a crush on them so while he's shooting, he's intentionally missing the reader, but when he turns to shoot at Wilbur, the reader sees and shoves Wilbur aside, taking the arrow instead. It's not deadly, but it is pretty serious, serious enough to where Tommy and Wilbur have to double back to help them. And afterward, I can just see Punz feeling horrible about it until he stumbles across them one day, outside of Pogtopia, and they're sitting by a pond, with bandages around the area they got shot at and he rushes over and starts frantically apologizing to them and fluff :D
đŸ’« I am sending you all of the virtual hugs and kisses I can muster. I have really been in Punz feels lately and this just hits the spot. Thank you so much <3.
So you would be sitting next to your brothers, really really upset at how the election results had turned out. You had put so much time and effort into helping the two get elected and just hearing that Schlatt had won by 1% just broke your heart. So you would be sitting there, head resting on Wilbur’s shoulder, your hand holding one of Tommy’s, as you half heartedly listen to Schlatt’s speech. But then the tone shifts, the mood gets darker and Schaltt begins yelling. Your head slowly rises off of Wilbur’s shoulder and your eyes widen as Schlatt begins his decree, “Is to REVOKE the citizenship of Wilbur Soot, Tommyinnit, and Y/N.” And everyone’s heads turn to you and eyes snap to stare at you three. “Guys, we gotta go,” Wilbur mutters to the two of you. Schaltt is still talking and you watch as Ponk pulls out a bow. Movement beside him draws your attention and your eyes meet Punz’s eyes. His eyes soften ever so slightly but harden as he looks to your friend and he also draws his bow. “Now!” Wilbur demands, shoving your shoulder causing you to move into action and begin running away from your home.
Arrows began flying around you as the people that were chasing you attempted to take a life. As these arrows fly by you, you begin to notice that none of them are even close to hitting you. You take the chance and slow down, looking over your shoulder to see what was happening. There was nothing out of the ordinary, only that Ponk was the one shooting at Wilbur and Tommy and Punz was the one shooting at you. Again your eyes lock and Punz lowers his weapon ever so slightly. You don’t know this, but Punz had been in love with you since the moment he saw you. He had just never had the courage to actually do anything about it. What he didn’t know is that you felt the same way about him. So you two would dance around each other all the time. Always making nervous eye contact and blushing when it happened. Giving slight waves when you passed each other around the SMP, never fighting each other in wars and stuff. Although neither of you really knew about the other’s crush, you knew about your own and that definitely wormed its way into your decisions. So Punz is the one that breaks eye contact and it’s because Ponk yells something at him. You notice Punz’s gaze shift to Wilbur and he raises his crossbow once again and aims for your best friend. And although you’ve been running for so long, it’s now that your heart begins to pound. You pick your pace back up and run as fast as you can at Wilbur. Once you reach him, you just shove him as hard as you can forward and right. Wilbur is super confused at what just happened but continues running, until he hears your scream. Your scream causes both him and Tommy to stop in their tracks. They whip around and find you now on your knees, an arrow sticking out of the back of your thigh. Immediately Wilbur and Tommy run for you and carefully help you up, putting your arms over their shoulders and helping you continue running away. (Okay I know this is serious time but like these boys are so tall and if you’re short enough, when they put your arms around their shoulders I just picture you dangling between the two
We’re going to ignore that though and pretend that you’re tall enough to do that comfortably lol)
You three get away from the two that were shooting at you but you can’t stop even though your injured, you have to find a safe place. It takes a while, especially cause you’re moving so slow due to the arrow sticking out of your leg, but you get there. The boys sit you down on some wood and begin setting up a small camp so that they could have a clean place to take care of your leg. “I’m so sorry about this” Wilbur whispers later that night, his hand on the arrow about to pull it out. You grit your teeth and squeeze Tommy’s hand harder, “It has to be done. Just do it. You probably screamed the loudest you’ve ever screamed that night.
On the other side of the server, Punz was lying in his bed at his home, beating himself up. How could he do that? Especially to you, the one he was so obviously in love with. He should have known that you would attempt to protect Wilbur before you protected yourself and now you’re hurt and it’s all his fault. Maybe he’ll try and find you to make sure you're alright. Either way, Punz has a really hard time falling asleep that night.
It isn’t until a solid week later does he find you. He didn’t even really mean to. Punz for the whole week would go back to the place where he shot you, but this day he just kept walking. He walked for many hours just to clear his head. It isn’t until he hears running water does he realize that he has gotten so far away from home that he no longer knows where he is. So he just keeps walking to the water, hoping it would give him some sort of direction back home. He breaks through the tree line and finds the most beautiful scene. It’s a small pond that is so clear and blue that he can see all of the little fish swimming around. Lily Pads float pretty on the surface and flowers littered the ground around it. It’s beautiful and peaceful, just what Punz needed. He takes a step forward and a stick under his feet snaps and a voice startles him, “Tommy I told you to leave me alo--Oh!” Punz’s eyes snap to the voice and his breath catches at the sight before him. It’s you. You’re actually there. You are sitting by the pond with pants rolled up to your knees, feet dipping in the pound. “Hi,” He breathes out, looking at you up and down, his heart clenching at the sight of your still bandaged thigh. (You have a bandage under your pants and then one for more support on the outside as well). “Hi,” You breath back, really stunned to see him here, “What are you doing here?” You ask, your eyes not leaving his. “I
I went for a walk to clear my head and found you
How’s your thigh?” He asks, guilt filling his entire system. “Oh, uhhh. It’s alright. Better than it was, but alright
. Do you want to sit?” you ask, patting the ground next to you. Punz slowly made his way over, watching your expression for any form of discomfort as he carefully lowered himself beside you, being sure not to get his feet wet.
It’s silent between the two of you for a few moments, both of you trying to find something, anything to say. “I’m really sorry,” spills past Punz’s lips before he can stop himself, “For everything. For your exile, for shooting you
For not telling you how I felt before you left,” And you freeze. Because you never blamed him for your exile or shooting you. He did what he had to and besides, he was purposefully missing you when he was aiming for you. But as for how he felt? You never knew about that. “What are you talking about?” you would ask softly. Punz would let out a sigh and a small laugh, “I cannot believe this is what it’s going to take to confess
Y/N, I’ve been in love with you since the moment I met you. And I know you probably don’t feel the same, I mean I shot you, but I walked all the way out here because I couldn't stop thinking about you and now
Now I’m here, confessing to you
” Punz explained, very nervous. And you can’t help but let out a laugh, because this? This is what it took for your crush to tell you he likes you? Of course it would be! Punz wouldn’t be looking at you, too nervous to see your reaction, so you would have to reach up and physically turn his head to face you. “Punz,” you whisper, “I’ve been in love with you since the moment I met you too. I just never pictured that you could actually like me back
I don’t blame you for shooting me or exiling me, you did what you had to
Can I kiss you?” And Punz can only nod before you lean forward and kiss him. The kiss is filled with so much feeling. Filled with passion, a hint of disbelief, joy and just pure love. It’s perfect.
The two of you spend the rest of the day sitting there at the pond, talking and kissing. You’re there until sundown, and then Punz helps you back to Pogtopia. Tommy is really upset at the sight of ‘the enemy’ in your base, but Wilbur keeps him calm and tells him to shut up. Punz and you fall asleep cuddling in your bed and he’s still there the next morning. He has to leave the next morning, but he’ll be back soon. Now that he knows that you feel the same way, there is nothing that could keep Punz from you.

Summary: Sometimes your best friend calls you at 3 am because his citizenship isn’t valid anymore, his marriage not legally acknowledged, and he kind of needs to marry you so he isn’t kicked out of the country. A comedy of errors in which Obi-Wan, Anakin and PadmĂ© don't take the long road to becoming a family, but certainly the most complicated one. Marriage of convenience, ObiAniDala style.
Read on AO3!
It's a beautiful night, we're looking for something dumb to do Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you
- Bruno Mars, Marry You
There were many things Obi-Wan didn’t expect at 3 am, such as somebody breaking into his house, which was possible but unlikely, or the apocalypse finally starting, which was impossible and unlikely. Mostly, he didn’t expect anything because he had grown out of his wild university student years and went to bed at reasonable hours so he was fast asleep at 3 am.
However, panicked calls from Anakin Skywalker were kind of normal.
Not that they should be, but they happened much more frequently than Obi-Wan cared to admit. Whether Anakin was fifteen or twenty-five, nothing much had changed in that time, not even the ringtone of Obi-Wan’s phone for him, only its model.
Tiredly, Obi-Wan reached for his phone in the dark, finding it somewhere on his night table.
“Hello?” he muttered into the speaker, not quite coherent yet.
“Obi-Wan!”
At the sound of Anakin’s panicked voice, Obi-Wan immediately sat up, all exhaustion forgotten. Over the years, the kind of tone Anakin’s voice reached when he was alarmed, had become an immediate trigger for Obi-Wan, forcing him to operate as if he were ready to give a three-hour lecture on the integration of the sonnet into English poetry.
“Anakin, is everything alright?” he asked, unnecessarily, as Anakin immediately began babbling over Obi-Wan.
“Can you come over, right now, we need your help.”
It took Obi-Wan barely a split second to register what exactly Anakin was asking. He glanced at the clock – it was the middle of the night. What could have happened- He sucked in a sharp breath.
“Are the twins alright?”
The only thing Obi-Wan could think of was that something had happened to the twins. The six-months-olds had had quite the ordeal behind them already. They had been born too early and Padmé, already weakened by the difficult pregnancy, had struggled during the birth. There had been too many complications and Obi-Wan still remembered that horrendous night, the long hours sitting next to Anakin in the waiting room, not knowing what was happening to Padmé.
And afterwards, he had spent quite a few nights over at their cramped home – meant for two adults, not two adults and two babies – helping them out. PadmĂ© had rested and recovered while Anakin had cared for the children and her, and Obi-Wan had just made sure that everything in-between had run smoothly. Anakin and PadmĂ© both had thanked him countless times already, but Obi-Wan didn’t know what for. They were his best friends, he was the twins’ godfather. If he didn’t come to help them, what kind of friend was he?
“No, the twins are alright,” Anakin reassured him immediately, though his voice didn’t lose any of its panic. “I just- I need to marry you. Kind of right now immediately, preferably before the weekend is over.”
“What.” Obi-Wan thought he had misheard. “Anakin, what are you talking about?”
“Can you just-“
Anakin’s voice faded from the speaker. Obi-Wan could hear some bickering, then a new person spoke. Padmé’s voice was lighter, higher than usual as well, but not quite as panicked as Anakin’s.
“Hello, Obi-Wan. Sorry for disturbing you at this hour but we have a problem. Could you be so kind and come over?”
“
Sure,” Obi-Wan replied after a pause. “Could you just give me ten minutes to get dressed?”
“You have still got some of your clothes here,” Anakin‘s voice rang out again, before he suddenly yelped and hissed, muttering something about sharp elbows. “Just- hurry, please.”
X
And so it came to be that Obi-Wan, dressed because he was not a heathen and it was chilly at night still, walked out of his house at three in the morning, and jumped into his car to drive downtown to the little apartment near the university campus that Anakin and PadmĂ© shared. They had been meaning to move out since before they had even learned PadmĂ© was expecting, but they hadn’t had the funds at first and then the time and now they were still living there. They were planning to move once the twins were a little older and easier to handle, but Obi-Wan already foresaw that this wouldn’t be any easier for them.
When he pulled into their street, Anakin was already standing in front of their house, dressed in an oversized hoodie and long, dark pants that were much too warm for this weather. The desert kid in Anakin would always make him freeze at all times. Summertime was alright, but during winter Anakin was always the first to get sick and cold and be absolutely miserable all around. He then always took great pleasure in sticking his hands and feet beneath the next warm willing body. Or unwilling if Anakin was sure you loved him enough to let him put his freezing hands on you.
Obi-Wan parked his car and was not even halfway out it when Anakin grabbed his hands and pretty much dragged him inside and then up through the staircase to his apartment. He didn’t say a word as he opened up the door, but his expression was concerning enough.
The apartment was slightly messier than when Obi-Wan had last seen it, clothes, photos, and documents alike flying around everywhere.
“So,” Obi-Wan asked as he looked around. “What is going on?”
Anakin opened his mouth, ready to let it all fall from his lips, but then shut his mouth and shook his head so that instead of replying, he was pushing Obi-Wan into his and Padmé’s bedroom. The bedroom was the biggest room in their small apartment. Their living room also doubled as offices and the kitchen was just cramped enough that it was full when you stood there with two people, doing absolutely nothing. In comparison to that, the bedroom was giant, even if it didn’t look like it with the wardrobe, bed, and the twins’ crib in it.
The babies were sleeping soundly in their crib while Padmé was sitting upright on the bed, her laptop in front of her, and another stack of documents lying around her.
“Good morning, PadmĂ©â€ Obi-Wan greeted her.
She just smiled tiredly at him and waved.
“Morning, Obi-Wan, and sorry for all of this.” She gestured towards the documents and then at Anakin, who had already dropped on the bed, his head now resting on Padmé’s lap.
“Nothing I’m not already used to,” Obi-Wan replied, kicked off his shoes, and sat down next to Anakin’s legs. The first couple of times he had been around, he had been uncomfortable claiming a spot here, but he had long since gotten used to it.
“So,” he repeated his earlier question. “What is going on and why do I need to marry Anakin?”
“We have run into a major problem,” PamdĂ© said. “We got mail this morning. Yesterday morning.”
She paused and glanced at the watch on her wrist before sighing and handing Obi-Wan one of the papers he accepted quickly. “Anyway, we got mail from the state saying that Anakin has to leave the country next week or face legal consequences.”
“What?” Obi-Wan replied. “Wait, how can that be?”
He glanced down at the letter Padmé had given him, and true enough, it was an official one.
Obi-Wan was well aware that Anakin’s citizenship hadn’t always been in the clear. His mother had been brought to this country as a worker with no documents or even the right to decide what to do with herself. Anakin’s documents had been equally shady right up until Obi-Wan’s father had cleared them up. It was how they had met – Qui-Gon Jinn introducing little Anakin Skywalker and his mother, the latest cases of immigrants his law firm was helping, to Obi-Wan. The then 9-year-old Anakin had latched onto Obi-Wan pretty quickly. They had been friends ever since and gone through thick and thin together and some not so pretty years as well.
But all in all, Anakin shouldn’t have any trouble with his citizenship, especially not now. And if Anakin had trouble, Shmi would certainly as well.
“I don’t know!” Anakin said and threw up his hands. “We already called the residents’ registration office but they said that due to some-” He waved his hands, replacing the legal jargon with gestures. “-they don’t count anymore because they were bound to some temporary stay. I have no idea.”
Obi-Wan ran his hand through his hair. He knew some of the goings-on tied to immigration laws due to his father, but not all of them. However, he was still sure that whatever was going on here, it wasn’t correct.
“Okay, but we can get those renewed. It’s terrible right now, but we can file in a complaint and fight the order. It might take a few months, but I’m sure we can figure it out.”
Anakin only shook his head. “I don’t have a few months. It’s out now or fines or prison or something and we don’t exactly got the money.”
“But you’re married?” Obi-Wan frowned and looked at PadmĂ© whose face had twisted into something dark and angry like he’d never seen before.
“That’s the second thing we’re wondering about. Our marriage, apparently, is not legally binding. And they just discovered it. Again, it’s something about my citizenship and the fact that we didn’t marry here but in Naboo. It’s freaking ridiculous but whenever we ask or try to inquire what we can do, I get told to go back to where I came from like I ever actually came from anywhere on Tatooine!”
Anakin’s voice got a little louder and they froze when suddenly a quiet whine rang out in the room. Simultaneously, the three of them turned to look at the crib.
“Oh, no, no, no-“ Anakin muttered and moved to get up, but Obi-Wan was quicker and closer.
“I’ll get them,” he said and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Obi-Wan stood up and walked over to the crib, picking up Leia first who stared up at him with her brown eyes. Their newborn blue coloring had darkened after only a couple weeks already, but Luke’s were still as blue as Anakin’s.
“Hey, little lady,” Obi-Wan whispered, holding Leia close before he gave her to PadmĂ©. Then, turning around, saw that Luke was watching him as well.
“You too, darling?” He asked and took him into his arms before sitting down on the bed again, careful so that he wasn’t shaking Luke awake. With both children settled into PadmĂ© and Obi-Wan’s arms, Anakin continued.
“So, the bottom line is, I don’t have anything that says I’m a Coruscant citizen or married to PadmĂ© so the only thing we could think of was that I get married to somebody who has citizenship and therefor get to stay here like that until we figure out what’s actually going on.”
Anakin’s shoulders dropped. “Sorry to spring this on you like this but we are kind of desperate here. And if I don’t have citizenship and something happens to PadmĂ©, the twins-“
Anakin doesn’t even have to say it out loud. Obi-Wan would know exactly where the twins would go.
“This is horrible,” he said. “And truly nothing else has worked out? Have you called any lawyers?”
“About a hundred,” PadmĂ© sighed. “None of them can help and we couldn’t reach your father either.”
Right, Qui-Gon was on a humanitarian trip on
Obi-Wan didn’t even know. He hadn’t spoken to his father in a while, not since their last big fight. He really hadn’t been in the mood to put up with him.
“Okay,” Obi-Wan said, letting the thought take shape in his mind. “So, marriage?”
“Just for a short while,” PadmĂ© reassured him. “It doesn’t have to be for long, only until we can get this sorted out again and then you can get divorced and we’ll bake you another cake as a thank you. We are really sorry about this and I know it sounds stupid but-“
“Hey, none of this is your fault,” Obi-Wan replied and with his one free arm, gently squeezed Padmé’s shoulder. “We’ll figure it out. Besides, marrying Anakin isn’t the worst thing I have done out of the blue.”
Anakin only eyed him suspiciously and Obi-Wan couldn’t help grinning. Anakin knew some of the really dumb things Obi-Wan had gotten into, but not all of them.
“How is this not the worst you have ever done,” Anakin echoed. “You’re marrying me so I can stay in the country.”
Obi-Wan could think of plenty of other things and was suddenly, for once, very happy he could use Anakin’s obliviousness to cheer him up.
“You don’t know what Quinlan and I got up to in our youth.”
“The more you mention it, the more do I think that I really don’t want to know it either,” Anakin muttered, shaking his head. Then he took a deep breath, eyes closed. A moment passed and only then he continued speaking. “But- you’ll do it-?”
“Of course, Anakin. You’re my best friend. How could I not help you out?” Obi-Wan watched the baby sleeping soundly in his arms, entirely unaware of the troubles his parents were in. They had gone through enough chaos in the last year, the least he could do was help them out. “When do you need to get married?”
“Tomorrow morning. Or today. At least if we want the paperwork to go through smoothly and quickly enough.” Anakin looked at PadmĂ© who nodded in confirmation.
“And we’ll need somebody to marry us- Oh, hell, where will we even get somebody to marry us on such short notice?”
It was late spring, the season most couples decided to get married. The offices would be full and getting somebody who could marry them even just today-
Obi-Wan blinked.
“Quinlan is ordained.”
“What?”
PadmĂ© and Anakin stared at him with deadpan expressions. Obi-Wan supposed this would make more sense to them if the two had spent more time around Quinlan than just a couple hours whenever their paths crossed at Obi-Wan’s birthday parties. His childhood friend was a wild spirit and Obi-Wan still wasn’t exactly sure what his job was, he seemed to change it every month. He did, however, have an amazing repertoire of skills and being ordained was just amongst them. He had married Luminara and Shaak Ti a couple of years back.
“I can call him,” Obi-Wan offered.
“Right now?” PadmĂ© raised her brow. “Don’t you think he’ll be mad?”
“He’s used to such things,” Obi-Wan replied. “Kind of the same way I’m used to getting called from you at 3 in the morning, Anakin.”
Anakin had the decency to smile sheepishly.
“Are you sure?” PadmĂ© continued. “This can wait until morning-“
“Except that it really can’t,” Obi-Wan interrupted her softöy. “Not if we want to make sure this is airtight.”
With some trouble as he was still holding Luke, Obi-Wan fished his phone out of his pants’ pocket and searched for Quinlan’s contact. Once he found it, he dialed the newest phone number he had, hoping it was still the correct one. It rang a couple of times before the other accepted the call and Obi-Wan put him on speaker.
“Obi-Wan!” Quinlan shouted, slightly slurring Obi-Wan’s name. “My man! What’s going on?” In the background, Obi-Wan could hear loud music. Quinlan must be out partying then. Obi-Wan hadn’t even known that there were clubs that were open on a Wednesday night at this hour still. But then again, their city had a very large university district.
“Quinlan, are you still ordained?” Obi-Wan asked.
“Am I still my main? Main what? Video game character?”
“Ordained,” Obi-wan repeated patiently. “Can you marry people?”
“Oh, yeah, sure! Just got my license renewed last week. Who needs to get married?”
“Me,” Obi-Wan said. “And Anakin Skywalker? Tall, blond, blue eyes, math genius-“
“I know your other half, Obi-Wan, honestly. And holy, shit, you’re finally marrying him?”
Obi-Wan paused to look up from his phone into the faces of Padmé and Anakin who looked just as confused as him.
“What do you mean finally-“ Obi-Wan stopped. Honestly, it didn’t matter. “Yes, sure. We need to get married tomorrow morning. Well, today actually. Is that possible?”
“Sure, I just need to get some documents from the department and it’ll be done. I need your ID and that’s about it. Any preferences for a location? There is this super neat gazebo in the main park. It’s a little out of the way so there are no people, would be great for wedding phots- holy fuck, does your father even know? Or is he still stuck in... where is he again?”
“Does it matter?” Obi-Wan replied. “Look, I just need to get married as soon as possible.”
“Okidoki, I’ll come to your house then? Or to that park?”
“We’ll l meet you at the park,” Anakin spoke up.
“Oh! Hey Anakin! You here as well?”
PadmĂ© raised her hand to her mouth in an attempt to stifle her laughter, but Obi-Wan doubted it mattered. Quinlan probably wouldn’t even hear it over all that background noise.
“Obi-Wan, put you on speaker,” Anakin said meanwhile.
“Cool, cool, see you tomorrow morning then at... what time?”
The earlier they got it done, the better, Obi-Wan figured. “What time are you up again?”
“Club closes at five, so, we can do this at six? No, wait. Eight. I need the documents.”
“Eight it is then,” Obi-Wan agreed. “Good night, Quinlan, have fun and see you then.”
“Bye-bye!”
Obi-Wan ended the call and stared at his phone just a moment longer. This had not gone as he had expected, somewhere in the back of his mind he thought it should be more difficult to get married, and yet, somehow, it apparently was all working out correctly.
“So, that’s it?” Anakin asked shakily.
“Yes,” Obi-Wan answered. “That’s it.”
He thought he should feel weird about it, he had never considered marriage before in any capacity, but instead, all Obi-Wan could feel was relief.
“Oh, thank the heavens,” Anakin muttered and then pretty much threw himself at Obi-Wan as carefully as he could without waking Luke in the process. He wrapped obi-wan in a tight hug, the kind where he buried his face in the crook of Obi-Wan’s neck and didn’t let go for a while. “Just, thank you so much.”
“No problem, Anakin. Anything for you, dear one.”
“No, really,” PadmĂ© said. “We can’t thank you enough. You have been helping out with the twins and now this and- we can never make this up to you.”
“I’d never ask you to make it up to me because you don’t have to.” Trying to ease the tension of this situation somewhat, Obi-wan smiled softly. “I’ll be content with some more cake. You’re mother’s recipe?”
Anakin laughed, still a little shaky, but he didn’t look like hell anymore at least.
“That one? Sure, I can make that,” Anakin answered. “It’ll be our wedding cake then. Then I’ll have eaten it twice at my own wedding already. Not that it’s a lot, but it’s still kind of weird to have done it twice.”
He then carefully took Luke from Obi-Wan’s arms and then lied down on the bed again, the baby still asleep on his chest. “I think I’ll stay just like this until this is over.”
“Maybe get some proper sleep instead?” Obi-suggested. “You need some rest after this stress.. both of you,” he added, pointedly looking at PadmĂ©.
“We’ll be fine, we always are,” she said. “And you should get some sleep as well.”
Obi-Wan stood up and stretched. “I will, I’m already missing my bed.”
His two friends immediately frowned at him, their expressions easily telling Obi-Wan that they were not agreeing with the decision he had reached just now.
“You’re not driving home now, it’s bad enough we made you come here at this hour,” PadmĂ© insisted. “Besides bed is big enough, you can sleep here with us.”
“I don’t want to impose-“
“You’re not imposing.”
“The sofa then-“
“Obi-wan,” Anakin inserted. “Don’t make me tie you to the bed again.”
PadmĂ© looked at them both, then began to grin. “Honestly, your conversations are a delight to listen to out of context. But really, Obi-Wan, our sofa sucks. You know our sofa sucks. We’ll just put the twins to sleep again in the crib and you can fit in here.”
Obi-Wan thought about complaining for another second, but he’d only lie to himself. He didn’t want to drive home now. He was incredibly tired and the risk of falling asleep while driving now that all the adrenaline had left him was not as low as it should be.
“Fine,” he finally admitted defeat.
And then, as before, he took Luke from Anakin’s arms and put him back in his crib, then he took Leia from Pamdé’s arms and set her down next to her brother. The twins looked absolutely adorable and already much bigger than they had when they had come from the hospital. Seeing them grow up healthy was a greater comfort than anything else.
Obi-Wan then stepped out of his pants, contemplating keeping on his socks in case Anakin decided his feet were cold and took them off anyway, and kept his shirt. Obi-Wan walked away from the crib towards the light switch and turned it, drowning the room in pitch black. He stumbled across the ground towards the bed and crawled under the banket. It was, as expected, heavier and warmer than anything he would sleep in.
He laid down on the left side of the bed, his back to Anakin, who took great pleasure in immediately tangling his legs with Obi-Wan’s while wrapping his arms around PadmĂ©.
“Good night,” he said and yawned.
“Good night,” the couple replied.
And the three of them fell into a sleep next to one another.
