The Narcissist Cookbook has many many good songs (if calling them songs even does them justice), and many of them feel like they’re holding a mirror up to me, so many of them see right through me it’s almost alarming, but only one of them feels like DAVID feels.
I first listed to DAVID the first time I ever listened to the Narcissist Cookbook. I had found them somehow, I don’t remember if it was recommended to me or on some playlist, but I was shuffling through their songs and DAVID came on, and that’s when I knew that I had found something completely unique.
It’s one thing to remind a listener of themselves when you’re talking about things they like about themselves, it’s even pretty easy to resonate with people about things they maybe don’t like, but to make someone come face to face with some of the worst parts of themselves? The parts they don’t want to even acknowledge exist? No song had ever done that before, and I haven’t found one like it since.
DAVID is the story of a very specific experience, one that I have not had, but the feelings it created and the reactions it brought, horrifying as they are, are very very real, and I know plenty of people, including myself, that know what they’re talking about. That song makes my skin crawl, my gut twist, because I know, and I hate that I know. I’ve witnessed “the monster stories I’d been laughing at for years—[slipping] through the bars of their cage,” in my own life. I’ve had moments when I realize “[…]I am not above being a scared little white man. I am not too smart to fall for all the rhetorician bile.”
It’s been on my mind a lot, especially when I’ve been seeing videos of people that have nothing to do with Palestine or Israel being harassed and attacked.
Listen to DAVID. Don’t fight the sinking feeling in your gut, or the crawling of your skin. Listen to DAVID and do not forget it.

Note
have you ever read the starless sea and if so what did you think??
I’ve yet to read any Erin Morgenstern, but its on my tbr! I was reading The Night Circus a while ago (around september?) but I’ve indefinitely paused it now. So if I do finish the books that are on my "must finish as soon as possible" list (which is quite short at around just 10 books, but I'm a relatively slow reader because of school) I'll actually finish that before I pick up The Starless Sea.

Pokémon Crash, Beetles & Fox Movies
Hello and welcome to another illuminating episode of fun and frivolity with those goofballs from Nerds Amalgamated. First up we have a story about how Nintendo are crashing Roku devices. That’s right, Nintendo have an issue with Pokémon Sword and Shield that is causing Roku to crash and shut down. Now if you want to know more you will need to listen in and then you can tell us what you think in our Facebook group if you think Buck is being to grumpy.
Next up we have the start of Jurassic Park with a beetle trapped in amber. That’s right, a real beetle trapped in amber. This one in particular is historical due to a few important factors, such as the age of the beetle. Would you believe it was around almost 100 million years ago? That’s right and it played an important part in the local ecology. Want to know how the listen in for our second story and then tell us what was your favourite part of the Jurassic Park movies?
Last up we have those poor people at Disney having to vault movies to try and increase the value and increase the margins. That’s right, since Disney the evil organization seeing world domination have bought Fox media they have begun to reduce access to Fox movies to create a false scarcity. This is only one of the underhanded things that they are doing, if you want to know more you know what to do. Also let us know what you think about these dirty tricks by Disney in our group.

Shoutouts
16 Nov 1902 - Brooklyn toymaker Morris Michtom named the teddy bear after US President Teddy Roosevelt. It was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, after he refused to shoot a bear during a Mississippi hunting trip in November 1902. During the trip, guides clubbed a bear and tied it to a tree then invited the president to shoot it; instead, Roosevelt, an avid outdoorsman and hunter, declined, saying it would be unsportsmanlike to kill a defenseless animal that way. - https://www.nps.gov/thrb/learn/historyculture/storyofteddybear.htm
18 Nov 1926 - Writer and playwright George Bernard Shaw refused to accept money from the Nobel Prize. Shaw initially wanted to refuse the Nobel Prize in general, in line with his principle of not receiving public recognition, but his wife convinced him to receive the award. - https://history.info/on-this-day/1926-why-did-george-bernard-shaw-refuse-the-money-from-the-nobel-prize/

20 Nov 2019 - Dr Karl Kruszelnicki is being awarded the 2019 UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularisation of Science. Dr Karl is the first Australian to win the prize, which he received in recognition of his "longstanding commitment to fire up people's curiosity for science and share his passion for the subject". He prides himself on being able to explain in minutes concepts or ideas that take him hours to research and understand. - https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-11-20/dr-karl-kruszelnicki-unesco-award-science-communication/11717044
Remembrances
18 Nov 1962 - Niels Henrik David Bohr, Danish physicist who made foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Bohr was also a philosopher and a promoter of scientific research. Bohr developed the Bohr model of the atom, in which he proposed that energy levels of electrons are discrete and that the electrons revolve in stable orbits around the atomic nucleus but can jump from one energy level (or orbit) to another. Bohr was involved with the establishment of CERN and the Research Establishment Risø of the Danish Atomic Energy Commission and became the first chairman of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics in 1957. He died from heart failure at the age of 77 in Copenhagen - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niels_Bohr
18 Nov 1941 - Walther Hermann Nernst, German chemist known for his work in thermodynamics, physical chemistry, electrochemistry and solid state physics. His formulation of the Nernst heat theorem helped pave the way for the third law of thermodynamics, for which he won the 1920 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He is also known for developing the Nernst equation in 1887. Nernst developed an electric piano, the "Neo-Bechstein-Flügel" in 1930 in association with the Bechstein and Siemens companies, replacing the sounding board with vacuum tube amplifiers. The piano used electromagnetic pickups to produce electronically modified and amplified sound in the same way as an electric guitar. He died from a heart attack at the age of 77 in Zibelle, Landkreis Rothenburg, Gau Lower Silesia or present-day Niwica, Lubusz Voivodeship - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walther_Nernst

Except for a brief absence in 1988, he was with the band from its November 1973 beginning until retiring in 2014 due to health reasons. Young and the other members of AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Malcolm was described as the driving force and the leader of the band. In 2014, he stated that despite his retirement from the band, AC/DC was determined to continue making music with his blessing. As the rhythm guitarist, he was responsible for the broad sweep of the band's sound, developing many of their guitar riffs and co-writing the band's material with Angus. hi frank! what are some cool facts about moths?
Well, they're a group of animals that I used to know all about.
I used to know everything about every animal there was, really. It's not as if there's only so many different animals there are and I just ran out at some point.
For example, I used to know everything there is to know about ants, and I have the whole history of one genus of them down to the last detail – I'm aware of every insect in it, where it came from, when it came into existence, what it eats, where it lives, what it looks like, the number of segments in its body, and its lifespan, and how it defends itself, and everything about its eggs, their growth, and their development and I've never heard of an ant that didn't fit into one of the nine existing genera and wasn't an insect in some way shape or form. (Well, a few specialized ones like "wasps," which have a sort of "insect ancestor" that predates insects as a group, and are related to spiders, but they're not really like ants).
I used to know everything there was to know about spiders (and, in general, things that move – I had all the taxonomies about birds and lizards and snakes down pat). I know, for instance, the entire family of wolf spiders with all the sub-families, about the family of jumping spiders, the family of pholcids (that weird group that has a centipede's body but the legs are made of silk), about everything (I could tell you how many legs there are on any kind of centipede, how many on a millipede, etc.), and about all the insects (of all sorts) that have a mouthparts like this:
I even knew about the kinds of arachnid whose bodies are filled with silk, and about the kinds that have two different kinds of silk: one that they spin and use for themselves, and one they have also spun and used for themselves. And all of this stuff about the internal construction of arachnid body plans and silk-manufacturing machines, that's all down.
But I gave up on that project sometime after I knew everything about insects because a) I ran out of them and b) they didn't seem all that interesting to me (compared to spiders, say).
(In fact, I knew a lot about spiders and insects (of all sorts) and other "things that move" in general, and that was probably where I got the idea for starting TNC. I wonder if any of those bits and pieces are left in there?)

Ring of Salt Licks!
Belinda and Braydon take a walk away from their regular spirit stories to discuss a few of the world's most renowned cryptids! Cryptozoology is a pseudoscience that aims to prove the existence of entities from the folklore record, such as Bigfoot, the chupacabra, and the Lochness monster!
Braydon discusses the strange abomination that hunts the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, the Jersey Devil! This creature's origins come from a reported accidental curse that a mother put upon her unborn child while she was pregnant. When the child was born and immediately polymorphed into a horrific amalgamation of numerous different creatures. It quickly murdered its mother and the wetnurses around it and took off into the Pine Barrens where it lives to this day. In the early 1900's, numerous encounters with this creature occurred within one week. Reports of police officers firing upon the creature, and firefighters blasting it with a fire hose before being attacked are some of the more substantial claims of encounters with this flying death machine.
Belinda goes on to discuss Mothman, the Moth-like humanoid entity that terrifies those unlucky to encounter the creature in West Virginia. Numerous sightings of this strange creature started occurring after 1966, and Mothman was even linked to the Silver Bridge's collapse that killed 46 people and injured countless more in 1967. Theories have been surfacing that the Mothman was trying to warn the people on the bridge of the impending danger, insinuating that Mothman is a benevolent being instead of an evil one.
