Who Gives TMJ Treatment?
If you suspect that you have a TMJ disorder, you may want to see a medical doctor to rule out conditions that may mimic a TMJ disorder. For example, facial pain can indicate many things, like sinus, decayed teeth, headache, facial neuralgia, and even tumors. To be sure about your problem and get the right treatment, you need to know what doctors treat TMJ.

What Doctors Treat TMJ? Is there a TMJ Dental Specialist?
TMJ treatment is not an official specialty of medicine or dentistry. There are however dentists, orthodontists, and physiotherapists who have developed a special expertise in TMJ treatments and are successful at them. To find someone qualified in TMJ treatments, you should ask your dentist. Maybe he or she can refer you to the right TMJ treatment specialist.
How To Find the Right TMJ Dentist Specialist?
Once you have identified a TMJ dentist or doctor in your area, you can narrow the search by asking them specific questions related to TMJ disorder.  Depending on the practice, a clinic representative may answer your questions over the phone, direct you to the practice’s website, or you may be able to make an appointment to interview the TMJ treatment specialist in person. Here are some criterion to consider once you have spoken to the TMJ dental specialist.  Notice these things while talking to the TMJ treatment specialist-
Listen to questions carefully and answers in easy and understandable terms?
Respectful towards you?
Considers your treatment preferences?
Give you enough time and attention?
You may also wish to ask about the technology that the TMJ dental specialist uses, the typical wait time for booking appointment, billing procedures and the phone or email availability of the doctor. Leading Dentists provides a full list of TMJ questions to ask a TMJ dentist or doctor. You must ensure you are well read about your symptoms in order to have a frank discussion regarding TMJ treatments.
Because there is no certified specialty in treating TMJ in dentistry or medicine, finding and knowing what doctors treat TMJ can be difficult. Patients should look for practitioners who understand musculoskeletal disorders (affecting muscle, bone and joints) and who is trained in treating pain conditions. Dental and pain clinics in hospitals and universities are often a good source of information, particularly when pain becomes chronic and interferes with daily life.
There are many cases that are more complex featuring chronic pain, jaw dysfunction and extreme conditions that hamper daily living. Such conditions require treatment by experts in these particular fields like rheumatology, neurology, pain management, muscle health to diagnose symptoms properly.

TMJ Can Cause Face Swelling! Try These 3 Massages To Overcome Inflammation.
TMJ specialists in Austin, Texas, are recommending massages to escalate pain relief
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) must move in a smooth, properly aligned, and fluid way to operate at its best. When this smooth functioning is affected, the TMJ can quickly become inflamed, which is the main symptom of TMD.  In TMJ treatment across Austin, Texas, an appliance is made for patients to wear so that their bite remains open. It also prevents grinding or clenching the patient’s teeth. Icepacks & ibuprofen are common TMJ treatment in Austin, Texas. However, few TMJ specialists also recommend massages which are an effective, non-medicinal way to deal with TMJ pain
Tumblr media
1. Kneading Massage
It involves moving your fingers in a circular motion against the joints & muscles which give pain. Locate the masseter muscles in your lower jaw, just behind the molars and below the cheekbone.
You can do the massage by gently pressing the corner of the mouth and working back towards the ear until you feel a flat plane of bone. Massage this area in a circular motion with 2-3 fingers. It will stimulate lymph nodes and blood circulation will help remove irritating materials in the affected area.  Continue the massage until you feel some relief and keep exploring different areas of jaw muscles to speed up the healing process. Using a full hand to massage can also be very effective.
2. Friction Massage
Many TMJ specialists feel that pressure alone cannot be enough to ensure pain relief. It needs to be meticulously practiced at the right place in the right way. Friction massage works on the mandible muscle, which is present in the lower side of your jaw and just below the masseter. In friction massage, one needs to touch the mandible and use the index finger to apply pressure on the muscle. Everyone’s response to pain receptors are different, so one needs to constantly try it before finding that perfect spot that leads to your pain relief.
3. Stretching Massage
People who find relief by pressing the mandible muscle can go for this stretching massage to escalate the relief process and effectively targeting the muscle responsible for TMJ disorders. This stretching massage needs to be done with 2 thumbs so you may need another person to help you do it at a proper angle.
You can start with two thumbs parallel to the jawline and above the mandible muscle. Press this muscle and gradually drag your thumbs down against the jaw. It will stretch the muscle away from the upper jaw. One can also massage and stretch the mandible muscle by using the two fingers of one hand on the mandible, and two fingers of the other hand on masseter muscle. The fingers now need to be pushed towards each other. Here it needs to be held for a few seconds, before relieving the pressure.
TMJ pain can be a chronic problem and if messages don’t help lower the inflammation, one must consult TMJ specialists. TMJ treatment along with these massages and better oral routine can certainly help you relieve the pain and get the confident smile back.
