Me interpreting a tmbg song: wow this song could be a very good representation living as a neurodivergent/mentally ill person. I can relate to this song alot!
The tmbw interpretations page: so yeah this song is about a crazy insane psychopath who is crazy and insane

for those who aren’t aware, this is based on an actual statement by a short-lived manager
You guys must be into the Eurythmics

I love learning something and understanding a reference in a song lyric I hadn't realised was a reference at all.

ohhh. so that's what "somewhere, they're meeting on a pinhead, calling you an angel, calling you the nicest things" means.

what is it about music in particular that makes people think an artist's songs are always autobiographical.
I mean, I know it's not the only artform that receives this response - people do it with thinking authors must personally approve of the stories they write. but it always seems like people take for granted that a songwriter must be speaking from personal experience rather than creating fiction.

My personal favorite instances of TMBG recycling / recontextualizing old content:
Using the melody from a theme for a radio show called "Who's Gonna Guess The Dead Guy" into the famous, grammy award-winning "Boss Of Me"
Retooling a couple verses from "Puppets Gonna Fuck You Up" into "With The Dark"
The fact Bangs was originally going to be "Snapping Turtle", an adaptation of a short story of a man who shot snapping turtles
On Earth My Nina is John Linnell singing what he heard when he played Thunderbird in reverse 5 years before the original song saw an official release
Spiraling Shape steals its entire (slightly altered) bridge and chorus from Rocket Ship, because it "suggested a better song".
Four Of Two, one of their earliest kids' songs, was originally a dial a song track that was functionally exactly the same, save for the fact it ended with the narrator graphically strangling himself to death as a means of escaping the devastating ennui he felt

i love my new (kind of, it’s a year old at this point) cd player because i can access secret tracks on some CDs! this is they might be giants’ factory showroom, and it has this neat little secret track (token back to brooklyn) that you can get by rewinding a little less than one minute before the first track.
i love little easter eggs in physical music like this, i wish things like it were on more albums (even if it makes ripping this album into MP3s a lot harder. lmao)
