The Tzedakah box of my childhood home still lives on a shelf, perpetually filling with coins. I remember many from my time growing up: ironic piggy bank ones, ones made of ornate filigree, those made of classic tin, ones created by community members to raise money for insulin — Tzedakah is a mainstay of Jewish life because we recognize that Tzedakah is life affirming work.
People often ask, what’s the difference between Tzedakah and charity? Charity is a choice; one often made out of pity. Tzedakah is a moral imperative. An easily recognizable definition of a Mitzvah: it is both a commandment and a good deed.
Taking care of one another is required of us.
If you want to the TV show the Good Place, you might have seen Jewish philosophy spoken to you when Chidi gave his speech, “What do we owe to each other?” His work is based on that of TM Scanlon, an ethical philosopher who has a book by the same question. Fictional Chidi comes to the conclusion, “to put it simply: we are not in this alone.”
Tzedakah is physical manifestation of the idea that we owe to each other care, love, and humanity. While this post focuses on monetary aspects, they also aspects like hiring another person, teaching, training, entering into partnerships.
It is our duty to care for one another and expect nothing in return, for it is our duty.
As such, you can go to link in my bio to find literal life saving opportunities. We are so close to reaching the goals of these 3 families.
HERE IS THE LINK

i wonder how morals across social media sites differ? like if i hosted a poll across insta and twt and tumblr on 1 question of "is xyz morally justifiable yes/no" what would the results be? and then theres subtopics of how much violence is allowed through the filtering system and if overexposure to violence desensitize people to it and alters their morals. or morals based on location (one example that comes to mind is a quote from "all of us are dead"- does the country care more about children or adults?) or morals based on time (asking tumblr in 2014 vs now about something. or before and after a major world event)
i think it would be hard to control every factor that goes into an experiment like this. obviously you cant get every person on the site to vote for a holistic image, and based on what an account posts the results would be skewed (political accounts). as well as sample size (is a site more popular than the other wtv). one of the most obvious flaws would be that the results are over generalizing and i have never seen a poll feature that lets you use a spectrum. most of the time (from personal experience lmao) peoples morals change on an issue based on familiarity/situational (the trolley problem: what if you know someone? robin hood: what if you're stealing for what you think is the greater good? alien stage (sorry): is sacrificing yourself when you think it won't traumatize them better than knowing you'll sacrifice and knowing it will leave a mark on the person you love the most?). finally the morals of performing the experiment itself. according to tm scanlon "working out the terms of moral justification is an unending task." so. is it even possible? and what if phrasing certain questions based on personal bias affects the results?
if anyone has seen a study like this before pleaseee send it over i think its such an interesting topic
#i would add more but alas i am merely a child who has happened to watch the good place maybe 7 times fully through#plips rambles#philosophy#social media#twitter#tumblr#reddit#instagram#facebook#polls

The Good Place really cut a harvard level philosophical text (What We Owe to Each Other by TM Scanlon) into bitesize easily digestable chunks, wrapped this all into a quirky comedy setting with super interesting fleshed out characters that are easy to relate to and created one of the most thought provoking pieces of media I have ever consumed in my life
Rewatched The Good Place for the first time since s4 dropped and. Oh my god. The Good Place said "people are a result of their environment but we always have a moral responsibility to be better" and The Good Place said "every day the world gets a little more complicated and it gets a little harder to be good" and The Good Place said "even in the face of total nihilism, when nothing you do will matter, you still have to at least try. Because trying is better than the alternative" and The Good Place said "if you have bills to pay and shit to deal with you don't have time or energy to become a better person" and then The Good Place really said "people get better when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they don't " and THEN The Good Place really said "no one is irredeemable. Everyone can try to be better today than they were yesterday" AND THEN! The Good Place said "Heaven is just enough time with the people that you love" OH MY FUCKING GOD.
#I am in awe of this masterpiece#I tried reading What We Owe to Each Other and couldn't get past the third page because of the jargon#But in The Good Place I could understand every message being conveyed AND have a helluva lotta fun watching the wacky comedy setting

Friday Releases for November 18
Friday is the busiest day of the week for new releases, so we've decided to collect them all in one place. Friday Releases for November 18 include Slumberland, TM, ROMCOM, and more.
Slumberland

A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.
She Said
She Said, the new movie from Maria Schrader, is out today.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation— a story that helped launch the #Metoo movement, shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and altered American culture forever.
The Last Manhunt
The Last Manhunt, the new movie from Christian Camargo, is out today.
Based on true events in the early 1900s Wild West, Willie Boy falls in love with Carlota from the Chemehuevi tribe despite being forbidden to be together. Due to her father’s refusal to give his blessing to the pair and the conflict between the two families, a fatal incident forces the young couple to flee the only place they know as home. In this tragic tale of love, loss, and realization, Willie Boy and Carlota fight to persevere even with all odds against them.
The People We Hate At The Wedding
The People We Hate At The Wedding, the new movie from Claire Scanlon, is out today.
In the hilariously raunchy comedy The People We Hate at the Wedding, dysfunctional American siblings Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt) along with their ever-optimistic mom (Allison Janney), are invited to the British wedding of their estranged half-sister Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) as a chance for them to reconnect as – more or less – adults, and learn to love each other like they once did.
There There
There There, the new movie from Andrew Bujalski, is out today.
Acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Bujalski (Support the Girls, Computer Chess) explores the precarious nature of human connection in There There, a round robin of emotional two-character vignettes in which seven people reach out and bond momentarily, setting the scene for the next encounter. A pair of new lovers, an alcoholic and her AA sponsor, a teacher and a parent, a lawyer and his client, and more move from scene to scene, revealing intimate details as they forge connections. Via a groundbreaking shooting process, Bujalski plays with ideas of isolation and perception by filming each actor individually in separate locations, only joining them to their partner’s performance in the edit. An extraordinary cast including Jason Schwartzman, Lennie James, Lili Taylor and Molly Gordon sensitively captures the humor and heartbreaking fragility of life and love in the 2020s.
Disenchanted
Disenchanted, the new movie from Adam Shankman, is out today.
It has been more than ten years since Giselle (Amy Adams) and Robert (Patrick Dempsey) wed, but Giselle has grown disillusioned with life in the city, so they move their growing family to the sleepy suburban community of Monroeville in search of a more fairy tale life. Unfortunately, it isn’t the quick fix she had hoped for. Suburbia has a whole new set of rules and a local queen bee, Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph), who makes Giselle feel more out of place than ever. Frustrated that her happily ever after hasn’t been so easy to find, she turns to the magic of Andalasia for help, accidentally transforming the entire town into a real-life fairy tale and placing her family’s future happiness in jeopardy. Now, Giselle is in a race against time to reverse the spell and determine what happily ever after truly means to her and her family.
Lamborghini: The Man Behind The Legend

Quote
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”—which was co-created by Schur and Daniel Goor, who wrote for “Parks and Recreation”—lacks the high-concept intensity of, say, “The Good Place,” in which the characters debate philosophy between fart jokes. But, while it’s superficially a more basic workplace sitcom, along the lines of “Taxi” and “Barney Miller,” it shares “The Good Place” ’s interest in T. M. Scanlon’s philosophical theme: that human decency derives from “what we owe to each other.”
The Upbeat Appeal of “Good Trouble” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” by Emily Nussbaum

5 Typists 'Backing Britain' by Unpaid Overtime
John Lee, The New York Times, 4 January 1968
LONDON — Five typists in a manufacturing plant have stimulated national interest in what they call an ‘Tm Backing Britain” campaign. They are volunteering to work an extra half-hour a day without pay to help solve Britain's economic problems.
Although labor leaders and even some businessmen have belittled the campaign as ‘‘a gimmick” or “window-dressing,” thousands of messages of congratulations and inquiry have flowed into the offices of Colt Heating and Ventilation, Ltd., in Surbiton, Surrey.
A number of other small companies are adopting the idea, and some price cuts are being announced. A hundred thousand Union Jack badges bearing the “I’m Backing Britain” slogan are being printed free by a Lincolnshire concern.
A rumor circulated that the new Poet Laureate, Cecil Day Lewis, had been asked to write a poem in support of the campaign. When questioned, his wife said that the poet was “working on a commission” but would not specifify details.
Philip Lends Support Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has lent his support by declaring that the young women’s campaign “was the most heartening news I heard in 1967.”
The Times of London will say in an editorial tomorrow that although opinions may vary as to the precise economic contribution to be made by such a program, “what matters is the attitude that it represents, an attitude that is not likely to be in evidence for only 30 minutes of anyone’s working day.”
Today, managers of Buskington Foods, Ltd., in Lincolnshire, jwhich distributes sausage and pork pies, were holding a meeTing discussing price increases when the shop steward walked in to say all employes would be willing to work an extra half-hour without pay if the concern dropped plans to increase prices.
The sales manager, John Howitt, said that the company has not only abandoned the idea of higher prices but would make special offers of lower prices as a result.
An advertising agency, Davidson, Pearce, Berry & Tuck, placed a full-page advertisement in The Times today, saying it would prepare “Back Britain” campaign advertisements free.
The Times advertisement was headed, “Valerie, Brenda, Joan, Carol and Christine, We love you.” It continued, “Until you had your brainwave, we were all sitting around grumbling. Now we know what to do. Every day, every one of us can spend a short time putting Britain first and ourselves second.”
“We’re absolutely thrilled,” said Valerie White, the 21-year-old leader of the five typists.
The others are Joan South-well, 20 years old, Brenda Mumford, 15, Carol Fry, 16 and Christine French, 17.
The entire plant now starts work at 8:30 A.M. instead of 9, and the company, foreseeing a 7 per cent rise in productivity, announced that it was postponing a planned 6 per cent price increase in ventilation equipment.
The campaign apparently had its origins with John Boyd-Carpenter, a Conservative Member of Parliament for Kingston-on-Thames, who has recently written to newspapers and appeared on television urging Britons to “work half a day for nothing.”
Union Members Warned However, Hugh Scanlon, the president of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, warned union members and the management at Colt that pay and hours agreements must be honored. He’said it was unfortunate people were trying to convey the idea that a wage reduction would solve the country's problems.
George Woodcock, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, praised the typists for their show of spirit but jsaid it was too much to expect I unions generally to foster such a campaign. The London local of the Shipbuilders Union termed the campaign “antitrade union activity” and “a gimmick.”
John Davies, director of the Confederation of British Industries, said the campaign might be the kind of window-dressing he had condemned from the Government but he said the program should be endorsed for whatever psychological effect it might have.

Coach Carter (1/9) Movie CLIP – First Practice (2005) HD
youtube
Coach Carter movie clips: BUY THE MOVIE: Don’t miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS:
CLIP DESCRIPTION: Coach Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) presents his new team with conduct contracts at the start of practice, but Timo (Rick Gonzalez) has other plans.
FILM DESCRIPTION: The true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his players that there’s more to life than basketball is brought to the screen in this sports drama. Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) was once a star player on the Richmond High School basketball team in Richmond, CA, and years later, after establishing himself in publishing and marketing, he returns to the school and to the team as the new basketball coach. Carter quickly sees that his work is cut out for him — the team is having an awful season, and their fights off the court are more decisive than their play on the court. While Carter wants to make the Richmond cagers into a winning team, he also wants a lot more — to teach the boys to respect themselves and one another, and that they must excel in the classroom as well as in the gymnasium. Under Carter’s guidance, the team turns their losing season around, with the state title a genuine possibility. However, when Carter learns that a number of his players have let their grade point averages slip below 2.3, as mandated in a contract he entered into with the students, he decides to lock the team out of the gym and send them into study hall until their marks improve. Carter’s plan quickly becomes a subject of controversy among parents and team boosters, and their objections are soon picked up by the local news media, many of whom are not sympathetic to Carter’s belief that his players must have goals beyond college ball or the NBA. Coach Carter also features Rob Brown and Rick Gonzalez as members of the team, and R&B diva Ashanti in her film debut as the girlfriend of one of Carter’s players.

i was about to say this lol u just summarized that DENSE ASS book tm scanlon take notes
You do owe the world things, actually. It’s just those things tend to be perfectly balanced.
You owe people respect and dignity; they owe the same to you.
You owe children kindness; as a child, you are owed a kind world.
You are owed nourishment by any world that brings you into existence, you are owed a chance to thrive. In return, you owe the same to any people or creatures you agree to take guardianship over.
The issue is not that we, and others, and the world in general, owe each other. We are all born being owed certain things, and by living we acquire debts; life requires this interdependence to thrive. The issue is that we are often misled as to what this actually means, by those who would take advantage of us. We are lied to by authority figures who do not want to respect us, or acknowledge their responsibility to us. Worse: we mistakenly come to believe that taking advantage of others is the key to restoring balance. We were cheated, so others must be cheated in turn.
We trap ourselves in these deadly cycles. Society betrays us so we are taught to disengage, to break it further. We are taught to forget the value of repair. We are taught to forget what is owed. Fundamentally, we are taught to forget that people are owed basic decency. When we say we owe the world nothing, we forget we are affirming the opposite: the world owes us nothing in return.
But this is so incredibly untrue. We owe the world things, and are owed in return, and that’s good, that is so so good. I would hate to live in a world where I didn’t believe people were fundamentally owed dignity and decency and kindness. The real issue is that these things often go unpaid, and unreciprocated. We think: “The world gave me nothing, though it should have. Why should I owe anything?”
And that is such a dangerous way to think. That type of thought just turns you into another gear in a destructive machine. That type of thought just allows despair to self-replicate. That type of thought validates the abusers and ensures there is never a shortage of victims. Feed those kinds of thoughts, and a plug gets pulled somewhere inside you, and lets the humanity drain away. You lose everything, trying to steal from others what was stolen from you. You cheat yourself and the world, with that kind of thinking.
I promise you this: When we try to balance the scales by refusing to pay forward what wasn’t paid to us, we just double the debt and burden the world in the process. A better world requires that we first do better.

So.... Brexit! And we start the week of the EU elections with the prospect of Boris Johnson looming over the Tory party’s leadership contest. Boris is in the lead with Liam Fox in a not very close at all second. The talks with Labour have as predicted failed. Labour say TM would not compromise, TM says Jeremy Corbyn would not compromise. What a waste of space they are. It appears the Aaron Banks (the personification of Harry Enfield loads of money character) has given Farage - well - loads of money. There are calls for electoral commission investigation into this donation so they can sigh and maybe issue a fine or two but let’s face it - they don’t really DO anything much. Our electoral system is being manipulated left right and centre and apart from a wringing of hands there’s not much anyone is doing about it. Except banning Macdonalds from selling milkshakes in the vicinity of Brexit Party meetings. The good news is that Tommy Robinson got short shrift around the North West this weekend. It was good to see the people of Liverpool send him away although not surprising after his stupid side kick James Goddard told the gathered protesters that Liverpool was a shithole. You can imagine how that went down. And of course we have TM new bold deal coming to Parliament in the next week or two. New bold deal! Apparently nothing that the new leader of the Tories won’t change, still has the backstop - of course it does! Ireland has the full support of EU27 and that’s not going to be changing. Labour say they’ll vote against but remain confused on their position on a second referendum and the Libdems are rubbing their hands in glee. All to play for folks. Meanwhile in Scotland - despite Question Time producing a show that suggested that they were struggling - the SNP are topping the polls. There’s a bit of a stushie over the whole QT audience selection again. At least four Tory councillors sitting front and centre and even an ex Tory MSP - Mary Scanlon - was given the microphone to speak as she was in the audience too. It’s an amusing diversion but I don’t care about QT. I do care about a strong voice for Scotland and even though the polls are suggesting big wins for the SNP that’s always a worry. It might lead to people thinking they don’t have to vote - like it’s a done deal. It isn’t. The SNP have a manifesto which puts forward plans for Scotland at the heart of Europe - Independent or not! The Brexit party don’t even have a manifesto for gods sake and yet suggestions are that they will take two seats in Scotland. We need a strong voice because make no mistake, the Tories - and Boris Johnson in particular - will do everything they can to ignore Scotland and they already plan to remove powers from our parliament. We need a strong voice, we need a strong Parliament - we need independence #voteSNP #YouYesYet? Get out to vote! http://bit.ly/2YCBtDW
