Taskmaster series 14
I was excited for this series when the line up was announced. I've been a fan if Sarah and Dara for years, and it made me so happy they were put on the same series. I'd vaguely heard of Munya and Fern, but not seen any of their stuff, while John was new to me. What a nice surprise John was, in an 'absolutely hopeless man' way, I fell for him completely.
I'm honestly surprised that Dara lose his shit more, but god I enjoyed the times he did. I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I loved watching the friendship between Munya and John develop.
Top 3 tasks
There were so many tasks I loved in this series, it was hard to pick just 3.
pick up both milk bottles and hold them directly above the microwaves
"Whats your name?" "John" "Starsign?" "Kearns" I do love John's regret system of putting the worst one's high up. I understand the angst on whether or not to open the task. I probably would have ripped it open, thinking what Alex said was tricksy, and instantly regretted it. Sarahs description of what happens when she drinks milk is...ew. But I love that it was her who thought to empty the cartons. Especially that it was revealed in a later task that it stank the lab out. Daras mini breakdown when he realised he had fucked the task was beautiful . "What, wait? Wait, what? What, wait?"
Get this feather into the bath
Daras immediate anger at John when he tried to move the feather on the cushion was great. It was another task where I was so glad that Dara was put on the same team as John and Fern, they're my favourite team. The combination of them losing the feather and Fern dropping the feather after they’d travelled so far was *chefs kiss* . Dara just loosing his shit laughing in the studio was unsurprising but hilarious. And don’t forget: “with our infinite plates” “there were 12 plates”
I was curious all through Munya and Sarah’s attempt. I loved their communication with each other despite not being able to speak. Which made it so much funnier that they took nearly 25 minutes to complete the task. You have to give them credit for sticking to their guns with the leaf blower.
Write a one-minute one-person play/Stage and perform this one-minute one-person play.
Ferns impression of Sarah’s accent is brilliant, especially as Sarah genuinely enjoyed it. The fact both women did plays about cats is brilliant. Munyas performance of Ferns was great, it was s dramatic. Compare that to Sarah performing Munyas ‘play’, is it any wonder he did so badly in this task? I mean, the ping pong balls? No wonder Sarah was livid. Why, WHY, was John so Southern? Daras script was the best if you ask me. And his acting was the best, especially with so few lines.
Shoutout to the second live task where they had to get Greg to say their word, because Jesus christ I was crying laughing at it.
Contestants
John
Fern
Munya
Dara
Sarah
I think its the first time the one(s) I've been fans of before are right down the bottom, but that's no insult to them, I loved all of them.

I haven't been watching all of the "My Ultimate Episode" because sometimes they just don't grab my attention, but John Kearns' one was so interesting
Like, what do you mean he only met Dara fifteen minutes before the sabotage task?? Why did the crew decide that that was the best way for them to be introduced to each other?
Also obsessed with the fact that fonts as cheeses is just a thing he discusses with his friends in groupchats

Me, watching TM S11 and S12: Oh no, this banter is *bleak*. Did they have a friendship break up behind the scenes or something? Me, watching TM S13: Awwww, they made up. :) Me watching TM S14: O.O ... well, they clearly made up AND THEN SOME!

Who would be the best person for Cas to fake date?
(about this post)
the obvious answer seems like sam but i actually don't think that would do much of anything. i mean it would be funny to ME because of how unbelievable they would be as a couple standing two feet apart while sam awkwardly puts an arm around cas, but it wouldn't cause any Problems(tm). nobody, not even dean, thinks there's anything actually happening there.
the thing is that cas is terrible at going undercover and playing a part. he gets better as the show goes on but by and large he's still very bad at it. he doesn't ever really get into it. i cannot imagine a scenario in which he puts his whole pussy into fake dating, even if dean was his fake partner. that's just not cas' style. so the best option is someone who would give it everything they've got and absolutely fawn over cas and call him pet names and run their fingers through his hair and bat their eyelashes and just really play it up in a way that is slightly confusing and uncomfortable for cas but that is rage-inducing for dean. so i think the only real option here is rowena.
rowena is great for all the aforementioned reasons but also because she would cause problems on purpose. and dean fully thinks cas is straight and personally i think that's a misunderstanding that should keep going up until the confession (in my mind this is an episode that happens sometime around s12-s14). so yeah. rowena is the best option.
and as an added bonus, it'll also really upset sam! both of the winchester brothers will just be seething over the whole situation but they absolutely will not admit it under any circumstances because then they'd have to admit why they're upset and they can't do that.

Calex AU
But make it when they both get in touch with each other again after finding they volunteer at the same women's shelter.
Casey was a regular since the suspension
Member of the legal team AND the designated coach for any sport the children of the shelter felt like trying
Alex starts attending after that case she mentioned in canon got to her (so around S14)
She's well into her 3rd month there so it's early in her volunteering days but still late enough for them to not have bumped into each other at that point and exactly on time to have their meet-cute (again)
Insert slow burn here
Casey was always on the fence about the illegal relocation network for women. She helped though in a way that wouldn't be legally binding, looking the other way when necessary and keeping her job at the DA's office. Ofc she was guarded about not repeating the suspension fiasco
It all changes when she sees a certain blonde starting to get involved. Out of preservation, she tells herself, she starts looking out for Alexandra by keeping her occupied in 'friendly' outings. They get to know each other and at some point, they realize the other is her ride or die. Alexandra is pretty much happy because this is her first time being treated with the care only someone like Casey could show. Cassandra grows amazed each day by this exceptional woman who she wasn't a fan of previously but neither put on a pedestal.
In this house Casey fell first and Alex fell deeper. Nonetheless, while Alex is aware of her feelings Casey is an oblivious- I'm -going-to deny-my-feelings- into- the-sunset mf
At some point, Alex drops out of the DA's office, and this is a big punch in their non-relationship relationship. After their brief fall out Alex reveals she's been a part of this organization for a while and kept it a secret from Casey to protect her. Read big misunderstanding because by the time Casey first suspected Alex may rope herself into the network her little scheme to keep her from it had already been late.
It all kind of makes sense seeing as Alex comes from enough money for ten generations to live off of for her to dedicate herself fully to helping disadvantaged mistreated women and their children
Anyway, Alex convinces her in the end it's fine and the door's open but it has to be Casey's decision to get involved. They're still going to be #friends tm
When Casey does finally join is painfully obvious to everyone they work so well together professionally as well now. Even Casey starts to realize her silly little enamourment but the more she tries to disprove it the weirder and filled with tension their interactions get. That means dorkier by the second and Alexandra's heart couldn't be any more pierced by cupid but some space magically appears for that woman.
At the time Casey starts noticing things about Alex (her smile, her hair, and those too-short for-this-place skirts) she also tries to bury them through acts of service like bringing her homemade food or ironing her work clothes. There's also that one time she went overboard with a surprise birthday party for Alex where she had all the people in the shelter a part of (you're not paying attention if you think someone threw one for Alex before)
Insert side characters here annoyed by whatever bullshit these two oblivious lesbians have going on. If one of the old lady volunteers one time locked them up in a room accidentally then nobody has to know
Their feelings to feel first ™ period comes to a close after a particularly gruesome case
The kind of heavy metal when one of them gets kidnapped by a criminal ring for messing up with one of their guys. Messy and messier gonna add the details later she gets rescued and finally, there's the confession then the most awaited by the whole of the gay community and their coworkers kiss
Casey quits her job and takes on moonlighting full-time
Insert some lore later here
And this is the backstory of Alex's cameo the last time she was in svu thanks for coming to my talk, feel free to fill in the blanks

I think it is being right so often that devastates Dean the most, if you think about it.
It makes being wrong hurt so, so, so much more. (No one's going to be right all the time, after all!)
Like Cas's being brought back by God provided fuel for Cas's sense of hubris, Dean's consistent ability to read people, identify their motivations, and make judgment calls is what grounds him.
It's when he makes a wrong move that triggers every one of his downward spirals. In season 9, he says, on making decisions that "He's so sick of making the wrong one."
DEAN: Hell, maybe I still don't. But, uh... I know I took a piece of you in the process, and for that...[DEAN struggles to say the right thing. He finally just vents] Somebody changed the playbook, man, you know? It's like what -- what -- what's right is wrong and what's wrong is more wrong, and... I just know that when... When we rode together... [He pauses, looking for the right words.]
(9x12)
Dean's life has rendered making wrong decisions incredibly painful. Almost intolerable. (Especially since so many of his decisions have been so high-stakes!)
///
Then in later seasons... it gets worse.
First, there was "choking in the fight against AU Michael" in s14
Tumblr media
(14x09)
And then s14-15 hits even harder. It's a painful, emotionally devastating setup that results in Dean trusting Chuck and going whole-hog on the whole "God says so" thing.
It's the opposite of everything Dean's ever stood for:
Tumblr media
(14x20)
///
Then he spins straight into denial, oscillating between that and anger.
Tumblr media
(15x01)
///
And when Belphegor arrives, he pitches into bargaining, too, experiences multiple phases of grief simultaneously. (It's in the script only, but a close reading shows that the next few episodes underline that THIS is the deal with keeping Bel around.)
Tumblr media
(15x01)
///
This gives Dean perhaps his heaviest dose of Nihilism yet, effectively rendering him as s4 Cas, "I don't know if you passed or failed here," with Dean saying, "He doesn't know what's God, what isn't."
In Golden Times, Dean is described as "fatalistic."
Tumblr media
(15x05)
Tumblr media
//
Tumblr media
(15x06)
Yeah. I'm always thinking of s15 Dean being so untethered that he reads very as a parallel with early seasons Cas!
I can't find the line in the scripts, but I know one of them in s15 references Dean feeling like his "life work is a hoax."
///
Dean and Cas have spent large parts of their respective lives being either Right or Righteous(TM), especially considering Castiel's incredibly long military history.
Yet in season 10, Cas says this:
CASTIEL: Yes, well, um… Before, I was very self-assured. I was convinced I was on this righteous path. Now I realize that there is no righteous path. It’s just people trying to do their best in a world where it’s far too easy to do your worst.
(10x04)
It's about trying to reconcile your own righteousness with the world, with where you are going to centralize the locus of your morality (i.e. family) in a world whose food chain spirals down so hard that following it will drive you mad if you're not careful!
The theme of righteousness becomes a poughkeepsie word as early as 4x07:
SAM: I just… I mean, I thought they’d be righteous. DEAN: Well, they are righteous, I mean, that’s kinda the problem. Of course there’s nothing more dangerous than some a-hole who thinks he’s on a holy mission.
That is where Dean fins himself in s15, I think. Grappling with what he will choose.
We see how he's grappling with it in s15, but he by no means really recovers in s15 (this is why we need ONE more season):
DEAN: Trust me, uh, bigger doesn't always equal better. Besides, who's gonna look out after the little guy? God certainly isn't.
//
LEE: You don't, Dean? I am you. I'm just you that woke up and saw that the world was broken. DEAN: Then you fix it. You don't walk away. You fight for it.
The funny thing is that Lee echoes a of "I am you's" that AU Michael does. Like characters before him Cain ("you're like me, Dean") and (Crowley "see what what I see, feel what I feel") and Chuck ("the ultimate killer"), Lee is trying to pigeon-hole Dean into being who he thinks he is, something nihilistic and inhumane.
LEE: Ohh. All right. I'll be damned. Why do you care so much, Dean? DEAN: Because someone has to.
(15x07)
Dean fights back against these roles. He fights for his own heart, for his sense of CARING about the little guy.
Maybe it's not about being righteous but letting go of the idea of righteousness.

d. c. anon saying hello!
I’m very curious to see if the finales this season (or maybe early next season?) bring together all these little nuggets of wisdom we have been getting all season from benson or if it all was just how it was written, with no connection/complete coincidence, and we were all reading too much into what she has been saying?
Or if we will know what m meant by saying “it’s not like it seems” or something like that. I know I’m getting the quote wrong.
With that being said, im loving this arc. Oscar papa bring brought in was purely for the fans 😂😂 however Amanda? Was she always this amazing profiler? Genuinely asking bc why else would she have been brought in? Like to serve the purpose of highlighting that Amanda clocked Elliot for leaving Liv? Again for the fans?
welcome back anon!
if we were still under wet lettuce's reign of terror, I would not be able to say with any confidence that I think there would be payoff for all the threads that have been woven so far this season, and Olivia's nuggets of wisdom in particular (physician heal thyself indeed). however. the premises are under new management and that new management has so far done a much better job of telling a cohesive story across episodes, and so I am cautiously optimistic that Olivia's lightbulb moment is incoming. it feels, very much, like somebody over there knows what they're doing, and the fact that the last couple episodes of both shows were left in the same hands gives an even greater potential for a satisfying payoff, tho I continue to remind myself of how s14 ended - we may very well be left on a cliffhanger. which like, that's a solid way to insure a big audience for the premieres, whenever they may be. so we shall see.
oh, Amanda. so Amanda's thing has always been psychology - she has, in a few episodes scattered across her decade on the show, expressed a particular interest in getting inside the minds of the most deranged killers. it is her thing, tho it's always bothered me; I am thinking of the machine elves episodes now, and Amanda's interest in and defense of alternate theories of consciousness, an interest which has always seemed at odds with her intensely narrow view of the world (for example, "abuse victims deserve the abuse bc they allow it to happen" is a theory she has espoused more than once, which, lol).
so the thing is, right, is that it isn't out of left field or anything, her wanting to do these things, it sits right inside of the characteristics they have given her. the thing is, I've never seen any reason to believe she speaks with any authority on the subject. she took point on a few interrogations - the Henry Mesner fiasco comes to mind - and has attended lectures - as they all have - but like. My girlfriend has spent a lot of time learning about serial killers. no one is calling her to be a profiler. I feel like Amanda was brought back not for her skills but for the Drama(tm). Some fans like her very much, bringing back a familiar face for a finale is a good way to boost ratings, allowing us to see Olivia interact with Amanda after we have watched Liv grieving her absence is compelling from a character perspective. and that's the thing, right, is that this is entertainment, so it doesn't matter if Amanda has any skill as a profiler - just like it didn't matter that Nick's pivot into science seems super weird. it's a "willing suspension of disbelief" moment, I think, and I may fuss about it on occasion but I'm not like. mad about it lol
I did want to see Elliot and Amanda acknowledge that they have something in common in leaving Liv, so I'm glad we got that, though "I left bc I'd killed a teenager about the same age as one of my own daughters and the brass were going to make me do a number of things I personally find intolerable and even then I might not get my job back and I can't risk my pension and I have a toddler to raise and I can't talk to Liv about it bc I'm in love with her and if I see her face I'm gonna throw everything away for her" and "I took a new job and then never called her again and made my husband, who is her friend and sees her very often for work, promise not to tell her I'm pregnant for reasons as yet unspecified" are not exactly the same thing.

When s14 was on I remember some people taking issue with the uk version using nz tasks, which I didn't agree with at all, since I think actually its fun to know what's coming up and seeing what a different group will do.
The only problem I did have was that I think they should have been kept more the same, because I think some of the changes limited the chaos that that made those tasks particularly memorable in thrir original form-sabatage task excluded because that was still great that to John being the perfect pick for it.
Also, less an unpopular opinion maybe but TMAu has been really strong so far, I'd say more so that s1 of the NZ version, and to wish more people were talking about it, and am also I'm surprised with how many qualities he has as a TM contestant that people here seem to love, at how little appreciation Luke McGregor is getting on here. He's so good (and by good I mean an absolute disaster at tasks and awkward as anything)
I agree with all of this tbh! NZ has a TON of strong tasks and i can’t blame Alex for taking some inspiration! I do wish they stuck a bit closer with something like the grape escape. it would’ve been boring if it was the EXACT same puzzle, but they changed it too much by having the multiple grapes inside, the fake grapes outside, etc.
and yeah i think the only task that was better in the UK version was the sabotage one. it just made for better television than the balloon one
and YESYESYES i LOVE taskmaster australia!! it’s soo good so far. love the TM. love the assistant. and absolutely love Luke McGregor. he def needs more love and recognition 💕 what an icon

This is a great list but I'm going to disagree with the last paragraph. If you're already open to the concept of a lighthearted but zany panel show of grown adults doing goofy things, go ahead and start with S1; you'll probably like every season anyway, and watching the show evolve over time and later seasons reference previous ones is imo part of the fun.
If you're on the fence or not sure if you'll like it, only then I would recommend seeing if someone you know has been on it, and start with their season. But I DO NOT recommend looking at the Wiki list linked above because the front page spoils all the winners; here is one that just summarizes who's in each season, including bonus eps.
These are some contestants that I (in the US) knew before they were on the show, so maybe other USAmericans might recognize them:
Ardal O'Hanlon as Eamonn from Derry Girls—S13
Mel Giedroyc from Great British Bake Off—S4
Mo Farah from the Olympics—New Year Treat 2023
Nicola Coughlan as Clare from Derry Girls—New Year Treat 2021
Noel Fielding from Great British Bake Off—S4
James Acaster of "Had a breakdown. Bon appétit" fame—S7
Sally Phillips as Minna Häkkinen from Veep—S5
Sue Perkins from Great British Bake Off—Season 16
If you want to watch TM with a specific mood, I'd recommend:
Sweet, wholesome cast: S4, S12, S16, AU S1
Chaotic cast: S7, S13, NZ S2
Simultaneously wholesome and chaotic: S9, S14
the best clips for introducing people to Taskmaster
these are not necessarily my favorite tasks overall; these are ones that a) stand alone well, b) can be summed up in a succinct hook, and c) feature an entertaining variety of approaches from the different contestants.
Destroy a cake as beautifully as possible (S4) Make the best music video for a nursery rhyme (S2) Make this Swedish person blush (S1) Bring Alex his dinner (S4) Make the most dramatic entrance (S9) Surprise Alex when he comes out of the shed (S3) Do the most surprising thing with a rubber duck (S4) Make something spin for the longest time (S6) Make something to engage this toddler (S8) Make a toy for the cute dog (S12) Make this coconut look like a businessman (S5) Have the longest phone call (S12) Build the best volcano (S8)
for full seasons I do not recommend starting at the beginning—I think S4, S7, and S9 are good options to start with, but the best way to decide is probably looking at the full list of contestants and picking a series that features a performer you already know and like.
