Referring to what you said about teachers, I have personally had some struggle throughout school with the way they teach things which I kind of use to write the issue mm mikey is having, very loosely. Though I don’t have a neurodivergency diagnosed (though a lot of people have kind of told me that I most definitely probably have big ADD or something similar rattling in the old noggin so idk) I learn much differently to what schools want. I am a very hands on learner, and really struggle with visual/auditory classes. It’s like being told how to write a good story but not actually doing it - I just tune out, or it is difficult to get it to “click” unless I explain it to myself in a weird way that actually makes much more sense to me. Once this “click” happens it’s great, I have no issues, but I have a lot of questions and thoughts that others don’t get prior to this point that I’ve unfortunately been disregarded for, as my teacher just didn’t want to explain and deemed me as stupid and needing extra classes because I didn’t learn in the same way. Not to brag but I’m pretty intelligent without even studying so this was a slap in the face for me.

So yeah, I kinda based at least some elements on this experience, though obviously a lot is also made up/fictionalised.

Anyway, you also mentioned Mikey’s age? I don’t think I’ve ever properly written down the ages outside of a discord I am in that talks about this fic, oops. In short, the timelines are not linear, but rather dotted around the place. A breakdown:

1987 are the ones where I’m not 100% sure on what to age them as, but I imagine around 17 - 19, all the same age

Rise boys are about 6 months - a year after the events of the movie

2012 are about 20 - 22, a few years after their final series (with Mikey being an extra 2 years ahead due to Dimension X)

2007 are what I believe are their cannon ages at 21? Takes place a few months after their 2007 movie (I also consider the 90s movies to be from the same universe due to the details present in 2007)

2003 are a few years after the crossover movie, making them the oldest at around 25 (Mikey being 24 due to him being a few months or so younger when they were sold)

Mutant mayhem boys are literally a couple of weeks after their movie

Bayverse boys are a year after their second movie

Ok ramblings that lost the plot but... One of my least favorite SJ tropes is his past abuse leaking and everyone is suddenly soooo sympathetic to his past as a slave. Like it puts so much of the misunderstandings about him on his own shoulders, in a "oh this was a safe space and if you'd just been honest people would've been understanding" way. And i get it's a very modern-ism to be like ofc slavery is bad and the worldbuilding has weird mixes of gayness being fine but slavery is legal.

Like if anything the reveal in the original PIDW-verse just reaffirms to them at the end that ofc SJ was an outsider that could never fit in or make nice. They would've been like well that's a mortal social issue that the cultivation world should be above but ofc it makes so much sense for a snake like him to have been lying and hiding even more of his true colors.

And I mean even in SVSSS verse w shen yuan when it gets revealed they're just like well whatever! We don't care abt his past bc he's our guy and stopped being sucks so he like got over it and also we have a monopoly on violence so him doing a little childhood massacre is fine. He's Good (read: one of us) now. Like the hypocrisy and classism and ignorance, not even of social issues or your peers burdens but not even knowing what you don't know, is never something the members of the cultivation world ever worry about until it the consequences of those things actively effects them. SJ was their martial sibling but never One Of Them, but SY integrated well in an entirely different cultural norm bc he still had young master socialization. And unlike SJ he was good at being nice even though it was for equally selfish reasons as SJ's meanness. IE both being their learnt survival methods they used to protect themselves.

Idk it just undermines SJ's entire reasonable paranoia and valid reasons for not being willing to reveal the things he could v much get into legal trouble with, that people would use against him, the tangible discrimination that exists, etc. Like he was literally named qingqiu it kind of shows the trend of the things people do to him when they Know.

Anyway idk let them be ignorant and hypocrites! I like SY as a character bc he's a Nice person that is simultaneously incredibly narrow-minded, privileged, selective in who he gives a shit abt, and resistant to having his preconceptions questioned until his life is literally on the line lol. They are both posers! And for that to be undermined by the well sy wins bc he is Nice and Cares while sj wasnt those things is so like. Reductionist and equally woobifying in my opinion.

Rest of the CQM PL's too! CQM is destroyed in original PIDW-verse not just bc of SJ but bc it's complacent w the system no matter the guise it puts on as being the liberal equitable sect. Like this is the breaking the bones and locking a kid in a cave and then sending him to fight a demon lord sect.

im gonna start posting fanfic recs btw whenever i find good ones. both here and my (awfully barren) 18+ account. because there are so many good fics out there with so few hits and fewer kudos and sometimes no comments period and it SUCKS because i REALLY LIKE THEM A LOT.. and i hope that by linking them here and yelling at everyone to COMMENT DAMMIT they might actually do it

seriously though any comment means a lot. most people who read a fic don’t even give a kudos. even if the fic wasn’t top tier, if you didn’t dislike it, hand over some kudos!! and if you liked it, comment!!!! even if the comment is one singular heart emoji it will be appreciated. if the comment just says “great fic!” the author will be happy. your comment doesn’t have to be this long winded gushing or analysis.

so many authors quit writing or lose motivation because the comments are few and far in between or just sometimes nonexistent. trust me when i say authors don’t care about how long or cool or smart sounding your comment is i promise!!!

i hope that mmmaybe recommending fics and telling people to comment might help fics i really like get more support maybe. and i, points at you reading this, hope that you will listen!!!at least a little….at least sum kudos….

HOOOOO BOY!!! welcome aboard! hmm i guess it really depends on your learning style? There is SO much to learn.

Overall I'd recommend MH Generations Ultimate. Admittedly it's agonizingly slow paced at the beginning, but it does a very thorough job of teaching you all of the complex mechanics that you'll encounter both in that game and all others as well. If you're going in pretty much blind like I did, it's a very challenging experience. You will get your ass whooped. It won't feel beginner friendly at all, but learning to handle the intense difficulty will benefit you immensely in the long run, and will make it much easier to transition onto and enjoy both the older and newer titles as well.

The "new-school" games like World, Rise, and Wilds are definitely more "beginner friendly" in the sense that their difficulty curve is less extreme (or nonexistent depending on who you ask...). But this can be a detriment I think. To be completely honest I would specifically suggest that you do NOT start with Wilds; the combat in that game is way too forgiving. If your first game is Wilds and then you try to get into the old-school MHs, it'll feel like pulling satan's rotting teeth. Also both Rise and Wilds especially suffer from being a bit overwhelming with how quickly they fling you into the actual hunts. But hey, some people learn better with a "fuck it we ball" approach.

Regardless of where you decide to start, don't be afraid to look up tutorials and guides!! There are tons of videos and forums and databases for the weapons, monsters, armor, etc. I've got almost 2000 combined hours in this series and I still have to look things up all the time. That's what I love the most about MH: you will never stop learning new things about these games.
