The name The Lighthouse and the Whaler has always sounded like some sort of epic novel to me, like a classic book in the vein of Moby Dick. And true to form, the Cleveland band’s music has always been rather vividly cinematic, too. We ride the oceans towards our greatest adventures alongside the band as the trio returns with Into The Unknown, an exuberant charging, triumphant sweeping folk rock anthem bursting with blustering, windswept magnificence. No towering waves or vindictive sea monsters can stop us, not with this rallying-cry of a song coursing through our eager ears. Into The Unknown’s enthusiastic stomps and ardent hand-claps remind us of The Lumineers, while its unbridled zeal and its lively strumming spirit also evoke Of Monsters and Men. TLATW will be kicking off a tour tomorrow that will bring them to Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco on May 23rd. Learn more about the tour on their website, here.

The Lighthouse and the Whaler – “I Want to Feel Alive”
SXSW 2017 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 8
Pairs Well With…Grizzly Bear, Of Monsters and Men, Freelance Whales
The Lighthouse and the the Whaler have been cooking up some new tunes this winter to follow up 2015’s Mont Royal, a collection of anthemic numbers steeped in the band’s indie emotionality. The Cleveland unit have a strong hold on dynamics across Mont Royal, placing melody and sound in a way that ebbs and flows sustainably. It’s a hopeful listen too, joyous without overblowing with twee smiles.
2015 Review: The Lighthouse and the Whaler entered the studio last week for the awaited follow-up to 2012’s This Is An Adventure, a mix of orchestral folk rock and indie rock songwriting that has struck a nerve since, discovering the band shortly after its release. The anthems that make up This Is An Adventure are meticulously crafted, so anticipate a full-blooded preview of what’s next come SXSW time this March.
2013 Review: While Cleveland’s The Lighthouse and the Whaler has been a touring unit for years, the band has really struck a special tone with 2012’s This Is An Adventure. Mid-tempo rockers anchor the record, excavating valleys of lush rhythms and melodies. There are bright moments all along the record, the staccato synth line of “Pioneers” and the breaths of organ that drive key track “Venice”, but overall there is a somber vibe to This Is An Adventure, an inward-facing sonic exploration that understands epic conclusions require unexpected journeys.

Original caption:
The Road Trip Story.. This was my favorite trip I've ever done and was so lucky to spend it with such amazing people. My hope with this video was to capture at least a fraction of the good times we had, and to have this to look back on fondly for years to come.
Details of the Production: ►Main Camera: Panasonic Lumix GH4 ►Lenses Used: Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 + Lumix 25mm f1.7 ► Edit Program: Final Cut Pro X ► Music: -Song 1: Simon May - Waiting (ft. Matilda Lucas) Simon May: soundcloud.com/simon_may -Song 2: TLATW - Light Waves TLATW: soundcloud.com/lighthouse-and-the-whaler Song 3: Laire - Final Coming Laire: soundcloud.com/laire ►Script: Part 1: "Driving over 24 hours in search of the most beautiful landscapes we could imagine. Waking up at first light. Staying up for last light. Camping together and sharing a road trip experience with other photographers. This is something I've always wanted to do. This is the Banff and Glacier road trip." Part 2: "We spent the next several days exploring Banff and the surrounding area, and I have to say, I've never been somewhere with so much natural beauty in all my life. I don't think there are many situations that make me happier, than running around incredible landscapes like these ones, camera in hand, and with great friends by my side."

He's only bloody gone and done it again! If you like hauntingly beautiful folk/acoustic stuff (or just generally enjoy fantastic songwriting!) you owe it to yourself to check out "The Cardiac Hotel" by The Lion and the Wolf. For fans of: City and Colour, Big Fin, pretty songs that sometimes make you do a little cry. #tlatw #thelionandthewolf #thecardiachotel #xtramile #jams #nowplaying
