and you know how these hockey guys called johnny daniel’s boyfriend and also his loverboy and how neither of them denied it?

yeah.

i really want a fic that’s written out of the perspective of the people around them who see this and come to the conclusion that, clearly, there’s something going on between them, i mean, they would’ve denied it, right? barbara, honey, you wont believe what i just heard at the hockey game today!

and then it slowly reaches everyone around them (think: the kids, amanda, even the evil karate husbands) and it would turn into this insane rumor, because wow turns out the blond guy LaRusso was with is the same one he was fighting in that all valley karate tournament in ‘84???

the gossip would be INSANE and they’d be so clueless

Ali shows up on her doorstep: "I got divorced."

Susan shouldn't let that affect her. Thirty-five years on and a string of broken-hearted girlfriends down the line, she should feel like she's past it all, that stupid highschool first proper crush. She's a confident, out lesbian who doesn't get tied down.

So incredibly over it.

She's convinced herself of that for years, while sporadically keeping touch with Ali the A-student, Ali the doctor, Ali the married woman with two kids -- Ali the was she imagining it or did she sometimes look at her a certain way? Ali the sometimes she said things about girls that seemed like she might, but she only dated boys, but these days everyone knew that could mean anything. Ali the completely unsurprised when she met one of Susan's girlfriends, taking it in her stride like she had always known, but then why not tell her...

Ali the great friend.

They hadn't really lost touch, so much as just not had the time. Susan had a commitment, or Ali was at a conference, last minute interference on both sides. Adulthood, that most homophobic of constructs.

"I got divorced. Went back to my Mom's for a bit. Saw Johnny. Saw Daniel." She downs her wine, indicating for Susan to top her off.

Susan scowls over her beer and does as Ali asks. Thirty-five years and they still loom, like old stains on an otherwise beloved rug. The part of the story she has no interest in and never had.

"And?"

"You know, I think... there might be something going on there with the two of them."

"There always was."

Ali blinks. "You noticed and never said?"

Susan narrows her eyes. Something is off in the conversational flow, two different streams running parallel: "Ye-es? They weren't exactly quiet about it. Doing it right in front of the school the whole time."

"Wai-... okay wait," Ali tries again, "they... I mean. Something going on going on. Like that."

"Yeah, like I said. Not surprised they're still at each other after all this time, they never could let go." Ha ha, she thinks miserably, look who's talking.

"Yeah. Yeah, but." Ali sighs: "Oh god, I shouldn't dance around this, I mean gay. They're gay. Or bi. Or maybe straight, but gay for each other, I don't know. Gay going on."

"Huh," Susan says.

"That's all you've got to say, huh? This is making me re-evaluate my whole life!"

Susan takes a measured gulp, not wanting to jump immediately into saying something wrong. Her first instinct stays with her however, and so she subsequently says: "I don't care, to be honest. They were both assholes to you."

"Oh, come on that's not-"

"Fair?" She bites down on her next words- I'll tell you what's not fair...

Ali deflates. "It's not that though. I mean, yeah, it's that feeling, was I just in the middle of some kind of thing that wasn't about me, and what's the point of me thinking about it after all this time, but I just thought, when I saw them again, wow first Susan, now you two. Like highschool me was some kind of magnet for some reason. And then after highschool I- but then I got married so..."

Susan holds her breath, as if any motion at all might steer this train of thought off course, but Ali doesn't continue. She lets it out again on the words: "and now you're divorced." She's surprised by the words, taking a second to figure out how they connect with anything that Ali has been saying, but then Ali looks at her, and there are tears in her eyes.

"I'm such an idiot," she says.

"No," Susan says -- a statement, not a comfort. If there is one thing that Ali isn't, it's an idiot. Smart, driven, kind, eternally patient and forgiving long past when it's healthy for her, and perhaps in the past too concerned with what her parents have wanted, but never an idiot.

"I feel like I've been living someone else's life," Ali continues, and then hastily adds, "not the kids. I don't regret the kids. But what am I doing to them if I don't... I'm not brave..."

Susan takes her hand, then moves up her arm and then thinks fuck it, and does what she's imagined for years and years, which is to wrap herself around Ali and kiss her on the temple- then she hovers, unsure and tense, lips barely grazing skin, barely resisting. Ali is different now. Wonderfully older. Different to her early fantasies, changed in the interim of oh maybe next year, if there's time, and still so very exactly what Susan wants. It makes her feel almost dizzy, but still, she waits, until-

Ali turns her head to meet her, and the tension snaps. Susan doesn't hesitate anymore -- she's too old for girlish insecurities around whether another woman might push her away suddenly, get cold feet, project insecurities onto her. If Ali is on the precipice now, it's up to her whether to jump and join Susan in the cool cool waters below, where she's been waiting for her all this time.

She jumps.

Finally, Susan thinks, finally this story is about just us.

Although, in the back her head, she supposes she should thank those two incredibly stupid boys for giving her a nudge. She won't, but she acknowledges that Ali might -- will probably invite them for drinks, that's the sort of thing Ali does.

Susan supposes she can give them that much.

As long as Ali is all hers, she can be nice.

"I don't get it, you hated Johnny, now you hate Daniel-"

"I do not hate Daniel... I just think he's... you know..."

Susan waves her hand at where said accused of you know is mouthing up a storm at some unfortunate freshman who happened to sit down opposite him in the cafeteria. The poor kid hasn't even been able to take a bite, he's so busy trying to catch up with what Daniel is saying.

"Friendly?" says Ali.

"And I didn't hate Johnny-" Susan tries another argument, feeling more and more like the defendant now "-until he started acting like an asshole-"

"Ha," Ali leans against her, so she's impossible to escape (she smells - as always - really really good). "The first time I said he was cute, you wrinkled your nose and asked if his mommy irons his jeans for him."

"Well? Does she? You oughta have at least found that out."

"You called him "pretty boy," and I somehow don't think that was a compliment," Ali continues, mercilessly grinning.

"Well... he is," Susan grumbles. Stupid pretty boys the pair of them. They should just go back to fighting each other and save girls the trouble of having to deal with them. But of course then Ali would have to spend all her time being supportive again. She still coos over Daniel and his stupid limp after the tournament.

Stupid, stupid boys.

Ali's tone turns a little more serious: "Hey, wanna do a girls' night? Just you and me. No boys allowed, just Teen Beats and, I don't know, we can rewatch Norma Rae."

"Yeah," Susan smiles at her. They'll end up stripped down to massive t-shirts, laughing all night, and fall asleep tangled into each other, just like always, and Susan will barely sleep, because everything will hurt too bad and it'll be totally worth it-

"And be nice to Daniel. Please."

Right. Daniel. It's all a ploy to get her to be nice to Daniel. The smile drops and she scowls at him still obliviously talking, cursing him with her eyes.

It's fine. If she knows anything about boys, he'll screw up too, sooner or later. But Susan and Ali, they'll last until the end, because Susan knows how to treat a girl right.

"Yeah, I'll be nice."

Even then, it wasn’t that he had a crush on Will specifically, but that he had one on a boy at all, which was something he didn’t learn about until he was thirteen years old, watching a man talk about his boyfriend on a cooking show and listening to his father complain that surely they didn’t have to show that kind of thing on TV.

He's the type of guy to get his mum to order stuff for him and then complain bc she ordered it wrong

He's such a hater but gets SO offended when people hate back

This guy is NOT self aware, he will lit do the cringiest thing and then 2 nights later he things about it and wants to die

He HATES straight milk (trust me)

Someone asks where he's from and he's like "erm, I'm glad you asked‼️ my dads achually 🤓.." and then he'd start yapping

When he meets new people he is SO awkward he's js kinda like "oh hi I'm daniel 🧍‍♂️" and then stands behind everyone until someone talks to him

He'd be in public with someone and he sees some ugly person and he turns around to whoever he's talking to and is like "do I look like that be honest"

And then he gets offended when they say yes (they were joking)

He wants to be like those kids who can watch slashers and horror movies without being scared (unrelated but I think johnny would like horror movies) so he gets like chucky or smth and watches it and CANNOT sleep for a month

And then the cycle repeats

He would talk SO much shit and then get surprised when someone confronts him about it

Like he would talk shit to EVERYONE about johnny like even people he's friends with and then johnny gets angry at him and the entire time he's just thinking 'how did he find out 😔😔'

When it's fathers day it makes it everyone's problem that he's dad karked it

And johnny just starts yelling at him because he's annoyed about the CONSTANT yapping

"NOBODY CARES DANIEL SHUT THE FUCK UP BEFORE YOU END UP LIKE YOUR DAD. 🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡"

and then he goes to the bathroom and crys

When he saw johnny he went home and told his kids to not peak in highschool

This guy is a HEAVY south park fan like he's been watching it since season one.

And then he finds out johnny's a family guy/american dad fan and he hates him even more

And then when they become friends they both hate on big mouth together

He once got into a argument with the principal like SCREAMING. like he was ANGRY

it was probably when Sam was in primary or smth like he got all up the principal bc they told him Sam was not napping or smth

He makes offensive ass jokes and he was selling some guy his car and he made a joke and the guy did not end up buying the car

He was not a happy bunny

He hates on Australians or smth like some specific country (not the uk because we are peak)

Sam would get in a fight with some Australian and he would be like "ofc it was an Australian 😡"

It’s the year 2021 and you’re obsessed with The Karate Kid. How are you feeling?

Well, it's now the year 2024 and...fine? I was never really "obsessed" with the Miyagi universe until October 2022 when I started going through all the episodes for my so-called "fan fixion". it's not really fanfic; intentionally bad recaps with fictionalized elements are just something my sister and I used to do ages ago for the lulz. We actually did them for Beverly Hills, 90210 and The Shield. The Cobra Kai ones are done by me; but my sister remains my one consistent reader. She's also the one who challenged me to incorporate the phrases "practice dumby" (yes, spelled that way), "Why is this happening to me?!", and "Ouch, ouch, oh, ouch!" (a line from one of my old childhood stories) into all of my recaps -- or whatever you want to call them. (In case anybody ever looks at those and thinks wtf?.) Despite not being "obsessed" until a year and a half ago, I still really liked CK and re-watched many episodes even before October 2022!

Did you grow up with TKK or are you new to the series?

Kind of both? I was born...uh, long enough ago that I was alive when TKK was released, although I don't remember its release because I was a very young child. I did see parts of all three first movies here and there over the years growing up -- and I watched that masterpiece The Next Karate Kid in the late 90's or early 00's while going on a Walton Goggins movie binge -- but I never appreciated them until my ex-on-good-terms recommended Cobra Kai. (I'm pretty new to the "fandom" but have been watching CK since May 2018.)

We gotta do the basics. Favorite character:

Johnny, for sure. Second favorite is Terry Silver.

Favorite ship:

Johnny and Daniel when they're bickering and squabbling like an old married couple.

Underrated character:

Stiven. Too bad he left, or he and Hawk could've become pals. I like how Stiven bravely tried to start a fight with Tory during the LaRusso house brawl, and she punched him away like she was batting away a pesky fly.

Underrated ship (don’t say therapy, lol):

Johnny and Ali? I (gasp) prefer them to Johnny and Carmen.

Will Anthony LaRusso ever be relevant?

Technically, he was one of the most relevant characters in 5x10. Without him, Kenny Payne might still be Terry Silver's prize pupil. (And Silver might not have been arrested. Stupid Anthony!)

You live in The Valley and are forced to join the karate gang war. Which dojo do you join?

Eagle Fang, but I'm not leaping from one building to another. (Sensei Lawrence is more than welcome to call me pathetic, though.)

7. Your favourite ao3 tag. The only one I have saved is Johnny/Daniel mostly because I got tired of trying to go in via TKK or CK since some are one or the other or both. The one I use the most is not necessarily my favorite but I've found underage drinking ends up being my like most common warning. Idiots to lovers probably would be my actual favorite. I love when it's mutual attraction but they just don't realize it because dumb and then slowly figure it out. 8. How slow is a slow burn? 😂😂😂😂💀 You're asking me? The person who wrote a fic where I don't think they get together for like at least 30 chapters? Slow. Let it marinate until every comment is wtf. 😂😂

My own fic aside, i think it depends on the story. Slow burn could theoretically be done quickly but be used in the case of like their lives it's been a slow burn. Maybe they liked each other as teens but don't get together until they're older and they're looking at it from that lens could be a quick slow burn. But it could also be done long like mine. I think it depends on the fic and the story you're trying to tell. 30.Describe a fic that almost happened, but then it didn't. I mean I've got 3 chapters of a chicken fic and a whole lot cut so....there's that one. 😂 There have also been plenty for other fandoms where I was like well maybe and then just didn't. I'm sure I have quite a few but at the moment my brain's blanking. I will say my original plan with Root Beer Floats was to go all the way up to CK or at least past TKK4. I wanted to write Johnny and Daniel meeting Julie and Daniel and Julie having a slight rivalry over Mr. Miyagi. (I have a drabble based off this) I also wanted us to meet the adults from CK. Like Amanda and Anoush and maybe Tom Cole. But then I decided I didn't want Daniel to stay on the route of doing car salesman stuff. I wanted him to have a shot at something else so it just didn't work.
