Summary: When you’re 10 (for a human) or the equivalent (for not-human), you’re given (during your sleep) a pet, representation of your soulmate. Thing is, both soulmates need to be born for them to appear. Dream of the Endless thought he didn’t have a soulmate, until a puppy appear near to him while meditating. On Earth, at the same moment, it is the year 1356 and Robert ‘Hob’ Gadling is just born. When he’s 10, he got the poshest, biggest black kitten with a very mean streak. Of course, neither Dream nor Hob see themselves in the other’s pet.

Chapter 08: The (many) scenarii that Hob Gadling invented in his head.

Hob imagined what his life with his soulmate would look like. The reality is unexpected.

When Fluffy appeared, Hob was absolutely smitten with the kitten and he began to imagine what his soulmate would be like. The people having a cat as representation had often a cold exterior but, with people they knew and trust, were very loving. He loved the idea. A lot.

Fluffy was very posh, that was for sure. So, Hob thought his soulmate was maybe someone of noble birth. He spoke also very well and sometimes, Hob thought ‘why would this person be with me? I’m not good enough.’ and Fluffy always made sure he knew that his soulmate would love him, because Hob was an amazing human being.

When he became a mercenary, Hob imagined rescuing his love. A daring rescue from a dashing rogue, earning a sweet kiss. Let say that the scenarii were in accordance with the age of the dreamer. NSFW like his students would say in 2021.

Once he became immortal, he decided to get better and his daydreams about how his soulmate and him would meet changed too. When he worked for Caxton, he imagined his soulmate coming in, looking to print a book of poetry they wrote. When he became noble, even if he was married to Eleanor, he imagined seeing his love from the other side of a ballroom, their eyes looking surprised and then delighted to finally be able to be together.

After Ellie’s and Robyn’s deaths, he kept his little daydreams for the extremely difficult days. One where his soulmate recognize him despite of the grim, apologize for being late and invite him to their home, where he could rest.

He didn’t thought about the slaves’ soulmates, not until his meeting with the Stranger; He imagined how his love would be disappointed in him and refusing to even look at him until he changed his ways. He saw first hand how reacted the slaves separated from their soulmate or those who had lost their companion when they soulmate died. His nightmares would be haunting him for a long time.

He finally knew who his soulmate was the 7th of June 1889. The tantrum (that what it was called in Hob’s mind) that his Stranger threw reminded him of one Fluffy threw back in the 1500’s when he dared to call him “Princess Meow Meow”. It was the same tone, the same “you dare”. And Hob could slap himself for being so blind.

I really like characters who are kind of weak or at least underestimated who we get to see grow and become formidable in their own right, and I like reunion-style interactions where two characters who haven't seen each other for a while for whatever reason get to meet again and we see their reactions to how the other has changed. This lets you not only have characters react to someone they know having grown and changed so much in the future, but lets you potentially have a character react to *themselves* having changed in such a way, and reflect on that

Propaganda:

I do love a *well executed* twist, and when it gets pulled off, I think a TITM twist is one of the coolest ones you can do. I think there's something particularly hard-hitting about following a character as they uncover not only a striking truth, but a striking truth about *themself* that can totally upend how they and we view events. Especially cool when it's something along the lines of, the very thing a character was trying to discover/stop/etc turns out to be them (or at least connected to them).
