Photos taken in this set are of: 1. One of a few Common Sandpipers I relished seeing today, with Green Sandpiper seen well too, some of my greatest ever views of the rustic and cheery Common Sandpiper. 2, 4, 8 and 9. Beautiful views, it really is such a vast, precious and wild mixture of habitats; endless reedbeds, glistening scrape, sea, rich woodland, grassland, views of heath and strong vistas all around. It was so invigorating to be out here so long today to begin the weekdays of my week off, the relaxing that weeks off are all about for me. 3. A Small Copper I really enjoyed seeing at the visitor centre. 5. Some glorious sheep's bit which I was thrilled to find at the coast. 6. Grey Squirrel at the visitor centre at the end. 7. A sumptuous Shelduck, seeing these as well as the key bird for this site Avocet crucial to its founding as the RSPB's first reserve what a key moment in nature conservation when it was founded in (the latter especially) great numbers was really heartfelt and calming today two very important species for my interest being some of the first birds I saw at Titchfield Haven as I was just getting into birdwatching as a kid. 10. One of a few great trees observed today in the sunlight that is turning seasonally yellow.

Also standing out of the so much seen here today was the key moment with the main bird we wanted to try and see here with phenomenal flying views of my first Bittern of the year. It is so sweet and satisfying that this idea paid off to allow us to see this quintessential reedbed, enigmatic and awesome species for another year which I feel so lucky to have. Other highlights were Great White and Little Egret, Marsh Harrier and Little Stint which I was pleased to spot. Common Scoters flying over the sea, finely coloured Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Black-tailed Godwits, another Ruff of late and great Snipe views were good to see too. Comma, Emerald Damselfly, Southern and Migrant Hawker and Common Darter were other insect highlights. Other highlights were Cormorant, Common Tern, Stonechat, Blue Tit, Red Deers, Muntjac, amazing Water Vole views at the pond at the end in the evening sun what a year I've had for this mammal, Rabbit, Grass snake possibly the first I've ever seen near the Water Vole, cricket, spider, restharrow, my first ever marsh mallow, red campion and tansy with Cetti’s Warbler heard. Ox tongue, water mint, scarlet pimpernel, stork's-bill, gorse, broom, honeysuckle, bramble flower, hawthorn, plums, chestnuts and a few mushrooms were nice to see too. At the hotel we stayed in last night holly, ivy, rose hips and Common Darter were nice to see especially in the sun as well as wasp. Red-legged Partridge in Norfolk on a hay bale and Buzzards in the air were good birds I saw on the journey yesterday with snails enjoyed at home tonight. A decade on from our two previous visits, I cherished amazing time at Minsmere today with an extraordinary list of things seen combining a bit of everything I love seeing and photographing it seems and with an extraordinary list of sightings for birds and mammals especially with many things I'd not often or ever seen on the same day before. What a marvelous nature reserve.

Incurred a cross last night and another this morning thinking of π [Mariana] lay three quarters hour this morning about -

Very fine morning - Fahrenheit 63°. now at 7 50/.. - down at 8 1/2 - breakfast - out at 9 1/2 for an hour - walked along the town and the marine parade - the marine hotel evidently the one to go to and not very far from the quay - go by daylight, and then easy to get comfortably settled - some very nice little gothic places far better than cottages along the marine parade - 1 or 2 gable-ended houses with gothic 2 stories of windows 4 lights each - 2 projecting in front and one on each side

- that might do very well for the gable ends at Shibden then walked thro' the town to where we landed last night from East Cowes - the Medina (medeena) or Newport river, the wooded hills and towns creeping along the margin of each, very pretty - Cowes too, is the yatch station - I should prefer it to Ryde?

On going back to the Inn, the driver came to be paid - he asked 6/. a day - had Mr. Webb, the master of the house up - he said a man should have 5/6 a day for that their masters paid them nothing but a boy like that (like the one who drove me) should have 4/. so gave him after that rate -

Off in the Malmesbury Steamer from Cowes at 10 3/4 - very pretty look back upon the town (West Cowes) see little of East Cowes and hardly any of the river - leave it hid behind West Cowes - just get a peep of the top of East Cowes (Mr. Nash) he there because the flag flying, and of the top, soon after, of Norris Castle where the duchess of Kent's flag was flying - At 11 1/4 pass the little thick low round Calshot Castle (like Hurst Castle) and enter the Southampton river - the little thin tall Castle Tower we saw before was Eaglehurst - small boat from the Thames landed at 12 5/.. -

Back at the Crown Inn (very civil people but very b.g. 2nd. rate, tavern-kind of house) - at 12 10/.. - carriage packed - read this morning's globe, every column in mourning for the throwing out of the reform bill by a majority of 41 lords - all the bps. [bishops] against but Norwich and Chichester - Lord Wynford spoke much and well against the bill -

Off from Southampton commonly here shortened to Southton at 1 3/4 - fine looking town - in 7 or 8 mins. [minutes] at Northam bridge 1st. and 2nd (a handsome wooden 5 arch-bridge and then at a very short distance a bridge (wood?) of one arch) both over the lake-like river Itchen which is here very beautifully skirted with wood and gentlemens seats, and altogether a beautiful scene with shipping and Southampton to the left behind us -

At 2 10/.. on Netley common, a heathery moor, bounded (right) by fine wood thro' which beautiful peeps of the Southampton river - poor land in all directions about Southampton, even along the beautiful banks of its river - land here almost as poor (but not so white sandy) as from Poole to Swanage - all the land along the coast from Southampton to Weymouth poor even if no farther, which I have not seen - at 2 1/2 fine view of Calshot castle and across the channel - Cowes and just see Ryde - and then in a minute or 2 get into enclosed land again - at 2 38/.. Bursledon bridge (wood) over wide lake that goes to Botley 2 miles left and to the Southampton river right - very picturesque good village scattered round its margin, chiefly whitish straw-thatched ivy-covered houses -

At 2 50/.. Titchfield common and from here and afterwards fine views of the Isle of Wight - could distinguish the watch tower on St. Catherine's hill - at 3 1/4 pass thro' one end of Titchfield apparently neat little town - Fareham at 3 42/.. one long neat, good street - change horses at Harris's far end of the town, having passed the better looking Inn, a large white hart - just below the Inn cross bridge over lake-like water with neat houses round its edge and wood and vessels - very pretty as at Bursledon - then rise little hill and fine view of the water and shipping and of Gosport or Portsmouth or both -

At 4 turned down the pretty little neat village of Porchester to the castle and there at 4 5/.. - walked about in the castle yard and could find nobody till I went out and got a man to take me to the concierge of the castle who was busy shewing about some people - the parish church is in the castle yard - the Saxon arch of the great west door is strikingly beautiful - the north side of the church and roof too very much covered over with ivy - went to the top of the great Keep Tower 103 feet high and 7 stories - in this and the smaller square Tower 8000 French prisoners were lodged during the last war over whom 300 soldiers mounted guard every day - the part where queen Elizabeth lived quite ruined - the great square Keep Tower said to be Roman Saxon and norman architecture - not easy to me to distinguish the 3 periods - Low water on the sea would have washed the south wall of the Porchester castle court - just out of the village of Porchester, the road lies along the low narrow gravelly beach a large surface beyond it being all green as the water makes it and close, left, is Portsea down (or Portsdown?) -

At 5 1/2 turn left thro' the neat good little village of Cosham down to Portsmouth - do not see any stayable Inn in Cosham - enter Portsmouth at 6 5/.. under two deep arched gateways, a regularly fortified (double walled with boulevard and trees innermost) town, the only one I ever saw in England; nor was I even that such an one existed -

Alighted at the George hotel at 6 10/.. - at last a good first rate Inn again - what a comfort - handsome 3 windowed sitting room, so ordered a dinner soup-potatos and broccoli, and boiled bread pudding and 2 bottles soda water - all good - dinner from 7 25/.. to 8 - before and after wrote out the whole of this of today, and inked over and settled accounts till now 9 10/.. -

Found letter this morning at the Crown Southampton post office date 7th. instant 2 1/2 satisfactory pp. [pages] from Miss H- [Hobart] Richmond park - both she and Lady S- [Stuart] were 'Terribly annoyed at what we thought the overthrow or throw over'....all quite comfortable again - Miss H- [Hobart] thinking it a great triumph that her wishes should be stronger than Lady S- de R-'s [Stuart de Rothesay's] arguments - says Lady Alicia (Gordon) will not stay more than 3 nights and if I wait till the 13th. may be sure of my bed again at the Lodge - very fine day - Fahrenheit 64°. now at 9 1/4 p.m.

Hej, viele von Euch wissen ja von meinen Insta-Stories, dass ich in den letzten Wochen zwei Mal in London war. Meine Mission: Wie viel Skandinavien gibt es in der britischen Hauptstadt? In meinem Podcast habe ich auch schon darüber gesprochen. – Ich wollte schon immer mal nach London, doch meine Flugangst hatte mich bisher daran gehindert. Doch diese Ausrede gilt in diesem Jahr nicht mehr, denn ich bin schon so viel geflogen im Jahr 2018. Also konnte ich endlich auch eine gute Freundin besuchen. Ich bin von Hannover geflogen mit British Airways und von Köln mit Eurowings. Beide Hinflüge waren okay. Es ruckelte zwar etwas über dem Meer, doch das ist scheinbar normal. – Natürlich habe ich auch etwas Sightseeing gemacht in London, aber in diesem Blogpost geht es um die Skandinavien-Hotspots! Ein Stück Skandinavien in London

Generell muss ich vorweg sagen, dass ich echt überrascht bin. Denn wenn ich in Deutschland einen Skandi-Shop besuche oder in ein skandinavisches Café gehe, ist es meistens leer. Doch in London war das komplett anders. Alle, wirklich alle Hotspots, die ich besucht habe, waren voll. In einem Skandi-Café haben wir sogar gar keinen eigenen Platz mehr bekommen und wir mussten uns zu anderen an den Tisch setzen. Das ist natürlich sehr hyggelig, weil man mit den anderen dann ins Gespräch kommt. Aber wieso ist es so voll? Sind es all die Nordeuropäer, die in London leben? Sind es Touristen? Oder sind es Londoner, die den Skandi-Style so sehr lieben, wie wir? Ich habe darauf natürlich keine Antwort. Es ist sicherlich ein Mix aus allen. Die Cafés waren alle sehr gemütlich in London, das Essen gesund und oft organic und natürlich ist der Skandi-Style auch in London angesagt. Hach, ich habe mich irgendwie auch ein wenig in London verliebt.

Scandinavian Kitchen

Scandinavian Kitchen ist nicht nur ein Café, es ist auch ein Bistro und ein kleiner Shop. Der erste Blick fällt sofort auf den langen Tresen, wo es viele süße und herzhafte Speisen gibt. Typisch skandinavisch gibt es Köttbullar, Zimtschnecken, Smørrebrød, Kuchen und vieles mehr. Es gibt einfach so unglaublich viele tolle Sache zu essen hier. Ich hatte natürlich eine Waffel mit Sahne und Marmelade, die so super lecker war. Die Einrichtung ist schlicht aus hellem Holz. Das Geschirr ist auch total schön. Und das allerbeste ist wirklich der kleine Shop. Dort findet Ihr Knäckebrot aus Schweden, Süßigkeiten aus Norwegen und Glühwein mit Pferfferkuchen. Aber auch viele andere Lebensmittel. Wer also in London ist, kann dort wir in Nordeuropa einkaufen gehen. Wir habe mir eine Freia Milchschokolade gekauft, eine Box für Leksands-Knäckebrot und ein Hygge Buch der Besitzerin von Scandinavian Kitchen. Denn sie ist nicht unbekannt. Die Dänin Brontë Aurell ist erfolgreiche Autorin vieler Bücher rund um skandinavisches Essen. Dieses Buch “So schmeckt Skandinavien” ist auch von ihr. Solltet Ihr mal in London sein, schaut dort unbedingt vorbei!

Nordic Bakery

Ganz anders sieht es in der Nordic Bakery aus. Die Wände sind verkleidet mit Holzlatten, eine Wand ist dunkelblau. Die Möbel stammen von Designern, wie Alvar Aalto. Alles ist sehr natürlich und trotzdem etwas stylischer. Hier gibt es auch Zimtschnecken und leckeren Kaffee. Man kann aber auch Brote und Sandwiches bekommen. Ich hatte eine Blaubeer-Schnecke, die sehr schmackhaft war. Es ist sehr gemütlich hier, die Atmosphäre ist angenehm. Die Bedienung ist sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Es ist der perfekte Skandi-Hotspot für einen kurzen Snack und einen Kaffee to go.

Blåbär – Nordic Living

Dieses kleine und feine Café ist etwas außerhalb des Zentrums. Man kommt aber sehr leicht mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln dorthin. Es ist sehr gemütlich eingerichtet mit hellen Farben, viel Holz und schönen Fliesen am Boden. Auch hier gibt es, wie bei allen anderen Cafés Zimtschnecken, Sandwichses und andere Snacks. Alles ist sehr frisch zubereitet und gesund. Das Lokal geht über zwei Etagen. Im ersten Stock befindet sich der Tresen, wo man seine Bestellung aufgeben kann und es gibt eine kleine Ecke mit Skandi-Produkten, die man kaufen kann. Neben Schmuck findet man auch Deko-Artikel, wie Kissen, Felle und Kerzen. Sehr hyggelig. Eine schmale Treppe führt nach oben, wo es auch noch Platz zum Essen und Trinken gibt. Ich hatte eine Zimtschnecke und einen leckeren kalten Kakao, den sie extra für mich angerührt hatten. (Denn warme Getränke sind nicht so meins).

Ole & Steen ist eine Bäckerei-Kette aus Dänemark, die ganz viele Filialen in London hat. Schaut am besten mal auf der Webseite nach, ob ein Lokal bei Euch in der Nähe ist, wenn Ihr in London seid. Denn bei den großen Einkaufszentren ist fast immer so ein Bäcker und auch in Oxford, wo ich war. Wir haben dort richtig gerne die Zeit verbracht, denn Ole & Steen ist scheinbar ein Ableger der dänischen Bäckerei Lagkagehuset. Wer schon mal in Kopenhagen war, wird diesen Bäcker kennen. Ich liebe ihn. Es gibt ihn zum Beispiel am Kopenhagener Bahnhof und Flughafen, aber auch in der Innenstadt. Die Einrichtung ist stylisch, in schwarz, weiß und Holz. Ich liebe einfach diesen Style. Neben Kaffee und Tee gibt es so viele leckere Köstlichkeiten, wie auch in der dänischen Hauptstadt. Natürlich gibt es Zimtschnecken, aber auch Himbeerschnitten, Smørrebrød mit Fleisch und Fisch, kleine Törtchen mit Himbeeren und frisches Baguette.

Ekte Nordic Kitchen

Kennt Ihr dieses Gefühl, wenn Ihr irgendwo reinkommt und ihr fühlt Euch direkt wohl? Man möchte sich die Schuhe ausziehen und in die Jogginghose schlüpfen und einfach den Abend ausklingen lassen? Ganz so krass war es dann doch nicht, aber im Ekte Nordic Kitchen habe ich mich wie zu hause gefühlt. Die Atmosphäre war so gemütlich, das Essen war hervorragend und die Bedienung war extrem nett zu uns. Es empfiehlt sich einen Tisch zu reservieren, wenn man abends dort speisen möchte. Wir hatten Glück, denn dir waren sehr früh da und bekommen sofort einen freien Tisch. Aber das Restaurant fühlte sich schnell. Es gibt eine lange Sitzbank, die sich durch das gesamte Lokal zieht. Davor stehen kleine Tische, wo man zu zweit sitzen kann. Es gibt aber auch große Tische. Das Essen war fantastisch. Ich hatte, natürlich, Köttbullar und Kartoffelbrei mit Preiselbeeren, Gurke und brauner Soße. Das war so lecker.

Als Vorspeise hatte ich ein Smørrebrød mit Geflügel. Und ich muss sagen, dass für London-Verhältnisse das Essen günstig war. Köttbullar kosten 12,50 englische Pfund. Alles wurde frisch zubereitet und war sehr lecker. Zu Trinken gab es Birkensaft aus Finnland.

Skandium

Wenn man schon in London auf der Mission nach Skandi-Hotspots ist, sollte man doch auch mal schauen, was es so in Sachen Interior gibt. Eine gute Adresse dafür ist Skandium, was sich in der Nähe des Victoria and Alberts Museum befindet. Hier findet man alle nordischen Marken, wie Kay Bojesen, iittala, Arabia, By Lassen, Design Letters, Design House Stockholm, HAY, Royal Copenhagen und viele mehr. Der Shop erstreckt sich über zwei Etagen. Unten gibt es alles zum Thema Dining sowie Bücher, Schmuck und Deko. Oben gibt es Lampen und alles fürs Kinderzimmer. Direkt gegenüber findet man noch einen weiteren Store, der zu Skandium gehört.

Das Team ist sehr hilfsbreit und man kann in Ruhe alles durchstöbern. Die Auswahl an Büchern rund um den Skandi-Style ist sehr beeindruckend. Schade, dass alles auf englisch war. Hehe, aber auch besser so, ich hatte ja nur Handgepäck. Ich habe mir aber ein paar kleine Dalapferd-Anhänger gekauft für den Weihnachtsbaum.

Gemütliche Cafés in London

Ich denke, wer in London auf der Suche ist nach kleinen gemütlichen Cafés, sollte mal in eines der skandinavischen Cafés vorbeischauen. Alle waren insgesamt sehr nett eingerichtet und einfach gemütlich. Stress und schlechte Laune bleiben vor der Tür. Alles ist doch sehr hyggelig und das gesunde Essen sowie der leckere Kaffee helfen beim Abschalten. Da ist auch ganz egal, ob man allein hingeht und sich mit dem Laptop dort hinsetzt. Oder mit Freunden zum Quatschen ein paar Zimtschnecken genießt.

Hyggeliges Hotel in London

Ganz kurz möchte ich Euch noch ein total gemütliches Hotel in London empfehlen. Ich habe dort eine Nacht geschlafen und wollte gar nicht mehr aus dem Zimmer wieder raus. Ich bin vom Flughafen direkt mit der Bahn zum Hotel und dann für eine Stunde ins Bett gefallen. Es roch in dem Zimmer so gut, alles war liebevoll eingerichtet und auf dem Bett lag eine Wolldecke von Broste Copenhagen. Hyggelig. Das Badezimmer ist mit einer Glaswand getrennt vom restlichen Raum. Das mögen viele nicht, aber da ich alleine war, war mir das egal. Das Duschgel roch auch so gut und die Handtücher waren so richtig flauschig. Am besten ist aber die Dachterrasse von der man einen weiten Ausblick auf Big-Ben, London-Eye und viele andere Sehenswürdigkeiten hat.

Abends kann man den Ausblick mit einem Drink an der Bar genießen und morgens zum Beispiel beim reichhaltigen Frühstück. Das Hotel Indigo London ist direkt am Leicester Square, wo auch der LEGO Store ist.

Reflections on my week off to start the year 

I felt like doing a post looking back at our time off over the last week. It was an amazing week packed with bird sightings and photos at Lakeside/home, on walks and visits across Hampshire, a day trip to Dorset for Portland and the trip away for a night to visit WWT Slimbridge in Gloucestershire with two call ins to lakes in Oxfordshire on the way. With 112 bird species seen thus far in 2023, the highest I’ve ever seen after one week and a fair few sensational species seen it has been a fantastic start to the year. What blows my mind with birdwatching and doing year lists and the amount of species there are to see is we are in this pattern now of having time off in the new year usually with my birthday incorporated and the last few years dates falling has meant that has joined up to New Year’s Day and any substitute bank holiday day and we try to see as much as possible, yet there is still a decent sized list of species I’ve not yet seen this year and some may be things to give more specifically dedicated time to at weekends but there is still a chunk of birds to aim for before the spring migration starts in about three months time or so which is exciting.   

After a relaxed New Year’s Eve where I reflected on my incredible 2022 for wildlife and photos a lot and also took the third picture in this photoset of a view at a wet Denny Wood in the New Forest, 2023 began with me seeing my favourite garden bird Goldfinch before double woodpecker delight Green Woodpecker and the Great Spotted Woodpecker in the fourth picture in this photoset and a memorable Mistle Thrush on my traditional walk at our local Lakeside Country Park to begin the year and Slavonian Grebe and Kingfisher views headlined a New Year’s Day afternoon walk at Lymington. 

Monday 2nd was one of a few super days of the week off in which we went so many places and saw so much; Great Northern Diver at Weston Shore, Barn Owl along the Titchfield Canal, Cattle Egret and Warblington and stunning raptors Short-eared Owl and Marsh Harrier with White-fronted Goose too at Farlington Marshes some of the species seen as well as the Kestrel at the Titchfield Canal in the fifth picture I took in this photoset. A bit quieter was Tuesday but still combining multiple locations, the New Forest’s Eyeworth Pond, Cadman’s Pool and Blashford Lakes as the sixth picture in this photoset shows picking up woodland species like Coal and Marsh Tit and the duck theme of the week really took off with my first Mandarin Duck, Goosanders and Goldeneye of the year across the locations. Another big trip on Wednesday saw us visit Portland Harbour and Portland Bill as well as another part of the isle where Gannet, Kittiwake, Purple Sandpiper, Common Scoter and Black-throated Diver were some of a few key birds encountered this week on a glorious day. I took the seventh picture in this photoset of the moon at Portland, a key feature of this week as I said yesterday. 

On Thursday we approached the pinnacle of the week really travelling to near to Gloucester to stay in a hotel before a day in WWT Slimbridge on Friday, visiting Oxfordshire’s Tar Lakes and Dix Pit along the way seeing the Mute Swan in the first picture in this photoset and Pochard and Great Crested Grebe memorably at the former, and as well as the latter too species at Tar Lakes seen again here my first Chiffchaff and Great White Egret of the year the latter. I took the second picture in this photoset of a view at Tar Lakes. Then Friday 6th arrived and Slimbridge a new year week off tradition of ours now delivered and more once again, with seeing specialties there such as Bewick’s Swan, Common Crane and Golden Plover and standout ones we’re not guaranteed to see there always Water Rail, Ruff and Scaup and just the sheer volume of amount of species with nearly fifty seen overall I think I counted on the night and also enjoying wonderful photo opportunities including of the captive wetland birds and mammals from around the globe there. It was an amazing day. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of a view there and ninth of a Bewick’s Swan. 

On my birthday yesterday a relaxed day precious time spent out again re-visiting the Titchfield Canal area and walking further along to Posbrook Floods and looking at Hill Head allowed us to see two bonus birthday presents to the many brilliant ones I got this year, Glossy Ibises at Posbrook Floods as the tenth and final picture in this photoset shows and our first Sanderlings of the year at Hill Head. 

As well as obviously the landscapes at all these top places to take photos of plants supported the birds this week well and fungi with a sort of bit of hang on from the peak season in a sense of some great bits being around still. For plants it went beyond the this and that of bits of things in flower that I noted again and again in December and probably November too with things like the snowdrops we often see at Slimbridge and winter heliotrope at Lakeside flashing forward to what’s to come in the year and hopeful days of spring not being so far away. I forgot to mention in the blog about Thursday my Mum spotted a butterfly from the car on the journey, by the time I’d seen something in the direction she said I’m not sure I could have really been sure it was and certainly couldn’t begin to guess which of the few species that might awake from hibernation briefly at this time of year it may be but it was interesting to know, and spiders have kept me entertained at moments at home this week too.

We shall go for some kind of walk this afternoon before I go back to work tomorrow, and in between have the Lakeside lunch time walks and time in Winchester to look forward to and of course trips to different spots at weekends. It has been a week full of cherished wild memories, as well as precious family time and great bits of relaxation. It seems we all had our second bout of Covid (after late March 2022) before and during the Christmas period and there was obviously the heartbreak of losing Missy at that time (whilst I still managed a few really memorable walks and wild trips out over that time and had the relaxation and family time too); so coming into the week off it was a bit of the unknown of whether we might have to do things a bit differently this year. In the end I would say we were all well enough for it to have been the week we wanted especially as it went on, and all the places visited and wildlife seen was a tonic in a tough time in the wake of losing Missy. The changeable weather also gave a degree of uncertainty about the week but whilst naturally for this time of year we have seen a fair bit of rain there were many great times for the weather too with lots of sunshine as well. That is the hotel that was once owned by Errol Flynn in Jamaica.

Titchfield Hotel, Port Antonio, Jamaica por The Caribbean Photo Archive Por Flickr: THE TITCHFIELD HOTEL The growth of this hotel in Portland is directly linked to the banana trade which expanded in the late 1800s to make Portland the second most important town in Jamaica. By 1902 Capt. Lorenzo Dow Baker's Boston Fruit Company (which later became the United Fruit Company) controlled the island's entire banana trade and Baker began to use his steamships to carry tourists as well as bananas. Baker built the Titchfield Hotel in the early 1900s. In 1905 the hotel boasted 600 feet of piazza and 400 rooms. It was said that no hotel this side of the Atlantic is provided with more of those conveniences that minister so largely to the pleasure of travellers. The hotel and the parish suffered greatly with the decline in the banana industry in the 1930s. One of its great claims to fame is that it was once owned by famous Hollywood swashbuckler Errol Flynn who died before he could put any of his plans to develop the hotel into place. In the late 1960s the hotel was destroyed by fire. Today only the ruins of this great landmark still stand

15/08/17-Titchfield canal path and afternoon tea at Rhinefield House in the New Forest

We firstly walked along the Titchfield canal path today, where I took the 1st picture in this photoset of a Roe Deer which was skulking about in the grass with its youngster.

Wildlife Sightings Summary for the morning walk along the canal: A few of one of my favourite birds the Buzzard flying and calling, another of my favourite birds the Green Woodpecker, one of my favourite butterflies the Red Admiral, Green-veined White, Comma, Kestrel, Woodpigeon, Goldfinch, Roe Deer and I heard another of my favourite birds the Sedge Warbler.

In the afternoon my Mum treated me to afternoon tea at Rhinefield House hotel in the New Forest as my shared post from my Instagram early showed, near to Whitefield Moor and Blackwater where we go a lot. It was a different and brilliant experience for me, eating and drinking whilst looking over the pond pictured in the 2nd picture in this photoset from inside the building that resembles a bridge at the back in the sun watching many fish and a Southern Hawker dragonfly was relaxing and rewarding. We then had a nice walk around the houses’ beautiful grounds where I took the 3rd and 4th pictures in this photoset of the beautiful Rhinefield House and the sprinklers in another pond. It really is a lovely looking complex set to the backdrop of typical New Forest heath and woodland. It’s from that heath which we reach from the walk the other side of the road from Whitefield Moor car park where we see the house in the distance a lot so it was nice to see what was beyond those fences for a change. There were also a of birds seen on this walk around the groups, I especially enjoyed lots of Swallows sitting under the roof and flying around. This was an example of how I really enjoyed some good summer weather in my second week off of the spring and summer today and it complemented my New Forest open top bus tour journey yesterday well.
