Things to Know About The Thiruporur Kandaswamy Temple
The Thiruporur Kandaswamy temple is located on the Old Mahabalipuram Road, separated by 28 km from Chennai. This sprawling temple was raised during the Pallava era in the 10th century. Chidambara Swamigal, believed by the locals to be a direct descendant of Sangam-era poets, reconstructed it during the 17th century. The temple complex in Thiruporur, also called as Samarapuri and Tharukapur, houses a 24 pillared hall close to the gateway tower, and a temple tank outside of the temple.
Tumblr media
The main deity of the temple is Lord Murugan or Kandaswamy in standing posture. In the east-facing sanctum, Murugan is seen with a spear in one hand with an image of peacock beside him. The temple has separate shrines for his consorts Valli and Deivaanai about the first precinct. A separate shrine is also built for Shiva and Parvathi and the attendant deities (Parsvatah Devatas) connected with Shiva temples. The image of Kandaswamy is believed to have surfaced on its own; therefore, no ablution is done to the main deity like other temples. You can find a yatra over a Tortoise base for performing all the rituals.
Legends:
A popular legend has it that Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi were cursed by Kanva rishi. Lord Shiva appeared in this place to free them of the consequences of the curse. Lord Shiva is worshipped by Vishnu as “Vanmeekeswara" on the Pranava Hill. Lord Vishnu performed prayers here in order to relieve him of the sin of having slain Soorapadman. Lord Muruga waged three battles in three different places namely Tiruparankundram, Tiruchendur and Thiruporur. Murugan fought with Thaaraga in Thiruporur and killed him, thus giving the name Porur. Tamil for ‘Por’ means war.
The Sthala puraanam has it that the place was submerged under a deluge. A sage by name Chidambara Adigal arrived to this place from Madurai after a divine voice instructed him to dig out the statue under a palm tree and construct a temple around it.  A special shrine is dedicated to this sage and is venerate with due respect during the Vaikasi Visagam festival. The last event of the festival is marked by his merging with the main deity.
There is an image of Muruga unearthed under a palm leaf well-preserved in the temple, which is widely believed to have been the original palm leaf. The temple find a mention in Aruna giri naadhar’s Thiru pugaz, . Bala deva raya’s Kanda Shasti Kavasam and Chidambara Swamigal in 726 verses.
The major festivals of the temple include Vaigaasi Visaagam (May – June), Maasi Bramorchavam (March), Paal Kaavadi/Paalkudam Festival (Milk Pot) on Pongal, Kandha shashti and Nava rathri (October - November).

By-polls on 3 vacant assembly seats in TN to be held within reasonable time: ECI to SC
Supreme Court: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has told the bench of S A Bobde and S A Nazeer, JJ that it will hold by-elections on vacant assembly seats of Tiruparankundram, Ottapidaram and Aravakurichi in Tamil Nadu within a reasonable time. The Court was hearing a plea filed by the DMK seeking a direction to the poll panel for holding the by-elections on these three vacant assembly seats.
The bench, while taking on record the submissions of the ECI’s counsel, disposed of the petition and observed that the court cannot determine the timing of elections and it was for the poll panel to decide.
The counsel appearing for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had earlier told the apex court that there are 21 vacant assembly seats in Tamil Nadu but the poll panel has notified by-polls for only 18 seats. He had said that by-polls on 18 vacant seats are scheduled to be held on April 18 along with the Lok Sabha polls in the state. It was argued that ECI should be asked to hold the by-elections on the remaining three assembly seats along with the general elections.
On March 15, the Court had asked the ECI to respond to the DMK’s plea seeking by-polls for Tiruparankundram, Ottapidaram and Aravakurichi assembly constituencies. The poll panel had earlier told the court that the by-polls for three assembly seats were not announced as some election petitions were pending in the Madras High Court.
