RHS Summer Urban Garden Show

Following the success of the the inaugural Urban Garden Show last November, Cityscapes have again joined forces with the RHS, this time to co-curate the Summer Urban Garden Show, taking place in the Lawrence Hall, London, 11-13 July.

The show, which has proved to be a departure from the traditional roster of RHS shows, focuses on the many different ways in which plants play important roles in contemporary urban life, whether indoors or in small outdoor spaces such as balconies and courtyards, and addresses a younger audience than the traditional RHS demographic. As with the previous show, the design will feature a dynamic layout providing a festival style atmosphere, showcasing some of the finest nurseries and producers of plant related goods, as well as exciting installations with arid and tropical plants from Arnott and Mason and pots from The Pot Company.

Cityscapes will be remixing their large show-stopping horticultural installation Heart of Glass, which appeared in the Great Conservatory at the centre of RHS Chatsworth Flower Show last month. The new immersive installation entitled Heartless, will feature the original 6m wide ecosystem structures, reconfigured by Treebox, to provide visitors with environments to engage with and relax in, whilst sculptural interventions by horticultural installation artists Heywood and Condie will fill the large inflatable pool.

A full program of talks will look at plants and gardens in urban contexts, including keynote presentations by RHS ambassador Nigel Dunnett on his approach to Greening Grey Britain, and RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Best in Show winning designer Cleve West, on Healing Gardens. Cityscapes will present innovative approaches to city spaces in their work with Business Improvement Districts, and award winning designer Anoushka Feiler will present her exciting city garden designs. Telegraph journalist, blogger at noughticulture and author of How to Grow Stuff, Alice Vincent, will chart her journey into gardening and provide inspiration for those with only the smallest of spaces to get out there and grow, and will be doing a book signing session.

A selection of workshops will provide a chance for the public to get hands-on with plants, including making a Tinyjohn terrarium with London Terrariums, floral bouquets with The Flower Appreciation Society, succulent expresso mug displays with Blueleaf Plants, button holes with Electric Daisy Flower Farm and bottle gardens with Het Groenlab.

Other show highlights include guided tours behind the scenes of the RHS Lindley Library collection, Potted exhibition celebrating the history of the humble houseplant, and a series of rooms capes by Ian Drummond from Indoor Garden Company working with Ikea to showcase novel ways to use plants in small indoor spaces.

An array of street food vendors will again be in attendance including Young Vegans, Rupert’s Street, Elephant Kitchen and Vegan Sweet Tooth, and a series of bars run by SHED, Seedlip and Botonique will be providing a floral-fuelled selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. SHED will also be hosting talks on the horticulture behind wine making and providing tasting sessions of natural wine.

Last year’s show kicked off with a preview evening party that had punters queuing round the block to get in, and this show will be doing similar with DJing from Cityscapes Soundsystem and specially prepared cocktails from Hendrick’s Gin.

Hendrick’s will also be creating a large interactive installation that will encourage visitors to create their very own music by playing cucumber based instruments.

The late opening times of the show will provide ample after-work hours to shop, eat, drink, and generally socialise, whilst relaxing on stylish Scandi designed street furniture by Vestre.

Usually Scott isn’t too bothered about spiders. He’s not a big fan of the ones that bite or turn up in unexpected places when he’s minding his own business. But on the whole he can deal with them and earn the respect of those who aren’t so cool with them.

But Scott’s not cool, not cool at all when the biggest spider he’s ever seen in his life attempts to crawl into the souped up BARBIE1.

#TinyJohn 'Black from his snoot to the tip of his tail' until you flip him over to tickle his snow-white belly. This little dude told us he was going to have a dark coat from almost the moment he was born. At the moment he is learning that Mum's limbs are a wonderful extension to his free roam time if he is courageous enough to reach out and grab her.
