Day 338: Thursday December 3, 2020 - “Christmas Come Early”

With several projects looming soon, including flooring and ceiling planks, where a good miter saw would come in handy, I pulled the trigger on my big Christmas Present - a 12 inch double bevel sliding compound miter saw to add to my ever growing Dewalt collection. 

My Dad helped inspire my purchase by pointing out Lowe’s Cyber sale that included the stand for free.   Went last night and picked it up and then spent some time unboxing this evening, familiarizing myself with it and getting it put together out on the patio.  Now this is a serious piece of machinery!  So much fine print to try to figure out.  Even went and picked up a couple boards to play with and made my first cuts - simple 22.5 inch boards for the Attic Portal upgrade Im working on.   

Wont be long and this puppy will be cutting flooring planks, which all sounds super boring but necessary to get to the real good stuff ...  2021′s hobby?  The year of the woodworker.  I’ll use this saw and milk every penny out of it to work up my TinkerShop and start crafting all kinds of goodies for around the house.  I got big dreams of Adirondack Chairs for around the fire pit, coffee table for the great room, and a nice big work bench with drawers and cabinets. I have high hopes that a year from now I’ll look back on this post as “aw, the day I got the big saw” and nostalgically think about how far Ive come since that night I couldnt even figure out how to attach it to the stand!

Sorry for two of these right in a row, but I actually need help. I'm not moonshadow, but my gf is, and I'm really not sure what to put as decorations on the hair accessories I'm making for her. I'm good at making things in my tinkershop and enchanting, but I still have no idea what her preferences (as an assassin) might be. Maybe flowers?

Your girlfriend is a Moonshadow assassin? Well then you’re very lucky indeed. 

The lotus is a nice decorative flower, if it’s flowers you’re looking for. Or a moonflower. Crescent moons are a popular choice with assassins--especially in sets of four--as are stylized shadow shapes.

Whatever shape you go with, you’ll want to see if you can make the hair accessory decorations more than decorative. Moonshadows love double meaning and double usage. Whether it’s an item for self defense or a tool for access or discovery or whatever you wish, adding that little bit of extra into a beautiful creation will be sure to sway any Moonshadow heart, even a stabby assassin’s.

The next Strike Commander of Overwatch

Now, obviously we don’t know a lot about the organisational structure of Overwatch. Just that some guy named Petras was ultimately in charge of the whole, whereas Morrison became the Strike-Commander and de facto leader of Overwatch. He had to listen to Petras, but it seems he still had a lot of leeway.

Now, imagine Overwatch gets reinstated. Whether some big war breaks out and the Petras Act is officially repealed or they manage it via a technicality, doesn’t really matter all that much.

Well, if it’s the former, I could imagine that the UN appoints someone they trust as Strike-Commander but since that could be anyone or no one, no real use speculating about that.

So, if one of the (to us) known characters would have to lead Overwatch as its Strike-Commander, who would get the job?

I can’t see any of the old big three getting the job again. Ana and Morrison pretty much deserted by faking their own deaths (okay, allowing the others to think they died, same thing). Reyes has been killing/attacking former agents and members, so he’s out as well. I don’t think they’d want the job back (or else they’d have returned long ago) but even if they did, who would follow them?

No one is going to put Sombra, Widowmaker, Bastion, Roadhog or Junkrat in charge. Hanzo is out as well. Symmetra, Efi, Orisa are also not viable picks.

Hana is too young, same with Lucio and Tracer. (I do like the notion that Hana could be Strike-Commander in the future though. Or Lucio for that matter). Genji kinda ditched Overwatch as well, and even if he hadn’t, would see it as weird if he became the Strike-Commander.

Torb and Reinhardt could do it, I guess, but I don’t see either as leader material. Reinhardt makes for a good officer in the field, but I can’t see him in meetings or deciding policy and honestly, he would hate it. Not saying Torb couldn’t do that but he seems like the type of person who would rather be in his tinkershop or on the field, not in meetings.

Winston, for the moment, seems to be acting as the leader, at least he initiated the recall. I can’t see Winston liking that though. Not to mention that, well, he is a giant gorilla and I can’t see that going over well when it comes to interacting with leaders and politicians. Would he make for a good leader? Eh. I like Winston but he really doesn’t seem to have the disposition of a leader. 

Zenyatta is an interesting pick. Omnic in charge of Overwatch would be interesting. He doesn’t really have the experience though, for leading soldiers and an organization like that. Or being a soldier. I could see him being a leader but not the overall leader.

Unless I forgot one, that should leave us for the two most obvious choices. Mercy or Pharah.

I know there is the fandom take that Pharah might become the next Strike-Commander, and yeah, I can see it, but honestly not sure if I like it. Pharah has the leadership-skills and experience, she has seen combat but still a sense of justice. She can fight and should be fairly smart as well. She isn’t that young but also not too old that she’d be too set in her ways and unable to change.

The problem I have with Pharah is that she doesn’t bring anything to the table that the old leadership already didn’t. And we all know that ultimately, that approach failed. The old three, at a time, where exactly what Pharah is now. Young, smart, brave, skilled. Career soldiers with a sense for justice and a desire to right the wrongs.

Well, we already tried it with those people in charge and it ended with the headquarters exploring and the old leadership faking their deaths and going on private crusades.

Pharah would learn from some of the pitfalls but I could see that she would face the very same problems that Overwatch did at some point and being the same type of person, might try to tackle them with the same solutions.

Which is, ultimately, why I’d rather see Mercy in charge. She has the leadership skills. She has been leading the science division for over a decade. She has been on the field for just as long, being a battle-medic. She should have the political connections and the public approval.

And most importantly, she has the mindset of a doctor. Who hates violence but who is also, grudgingly, willing to use it when absolutely necessary. Not to mention, Overwatch has broken a lot of promises to her in the past. Why would she risk that again? The only way she could trust the new Overwatch to their word would be by enforcing it herself. By controlling everything Overwatch did.

Some fanfics and whatnot have characterized Mercy as Overwatch’s conscience. Well, the thing is, you can ignore that. Overwatch certainly did in the past.

So yeah, I can see Mercy being the best choice for the new Strike-Commander. Probably not going to happen though, but that would be my pick.
