Maybe it's because I just read a post wondering about John's 'glam up' in S4 but I only now noticed with this side by side HE PARTS HIS HAIR OPPOSITE - like he has parted his hair on the opposite side in S4 from S1. If there was ever evidence for S4 John being a (dark) mirror version of reality, this is it for me.

Mirror, mirror
I just had a (sleepy) revelation that lived backwards is devil (can't believe I never noticed that before) which made me think of the whole mirror structure of Sherlock and how things were so significantly different and OOC in S4.
The promo photos of the flat filled with water came across my dash again recently and, though it was clear that water was mentioned a lot in S4, that imagery was never really explained. So... what if we equate the plunge off of Bart's to the metaphorical plunge off of Reichenbach falls - Sherlock would have hit the water instead of Earth and, like jumping off a cliff into a lake, the second before impact he might be staring at a murky reflection of himself and all the events that lead to that moment stretching behind him - reversed (because it is a mirror image). What would be the first thing that happens in this opposite world? Sherlock goes back up - we get to see that in Anderson's bungee cord and Molly kiss theory of how Sherlock survived. Anderson is already the opposite of how he was on the other side of this moment - he's the believer rather than the disbeliever. Then we are shown a collaborative love relationship between Moriarty and Sherlock rather than the antagonistic and adversarial one that lead to Sherlock's jump. From there, we get a fractured reflection of everything that came before, as if Sherlock has gone under that mirror surface of water into the world of opposite.
Others can elaborate more if they find this makes sense but one moment I want to call out is that maybe the hug is the mirror reflection of the moment Sherlock rejected John at Angelo's that first night. John is admitting that he wanted more to a Sherlock mirror (rather than denying that he was asking) and instead of Sherlock giving the speil about his body being transport and how he is married to his work thereby metaphorically pushing John away and denying his own human needs - we have Sherlock embracing John and then saying that he does respond (get lonely) sometimes and that he suspects that they're both human.

I don’t think the hospital canteen conversation with Magnussen happened, therefore I don’t think anything after that happened either.
LISTEN FRIENDS, THIS CONVERSATION NEVER HAPPENED.
You remember this scene in HLV where Sherlock and Magnussen plan an exchange - Sherlock will give Magnussen his brother to gain access to Appledore. But this whole scene clearly took place in Sherlock’s MP, and it’s basically spelled out for us from the get go.
MAGNUSSEN: Shouldn’t you be in hospital? SHERLOCK: I am in hospital. This is the canteen. MAGNUSSEN: Is it? SHERLOCK: In my opinion, yes.
This exchange makes it clear that it is MP. If this was real, Magnussen wouldn’t be asking those questions. He would know exactly where he was since he’s the one that came to meet Sherlock. And Sherlock says that he is in hospital, so he can’t be meeting Magnussen somewhere else (I’m certain no one would let him waltz out of a hospital with his morphine still attached and ass hanging out of his hospital gown), and he goes on to say this is his opinion of the canteen. His opinion. This is Sherlock Holmes. For a man who is all about the facts, why on earth would he say that this is his opinion of the canteen unless it was questionable?
To play devil’s advocate, let’s entertain the idea that maybe this conversation did happen in real life outside of his MP and this scene is just some sort of wonky MP version. When and where would it have happened? Due to the nature of the exchange, it had to have taken place in person. In the scene Sherlock is shown in his hospital gown hooked up to morphine, which leads us to believe that this conversation happened while he was in hospital. I highly, highly doubt Magnussen would pay him a visit in hospital, especially to talk espionage. If they met once he was released from hospital, WHY would we be shown Sherlock in his hospital garb? It only makes sense that we’re shown Sherlock in his hospital gown, with his morphine, while he’s outright saying he’s in hospital, if he is indeed in the hospital. Which brings us back to the fucky nature of the conversation above.
So yeah, nope, not buying it. This shit isn’t real.
BUT THIS CONVERSATION NEEDED TO HAPPEN.
Okay, so I can confidently say that this particular scene happened in his MP, not in real life, BUT this conversation had to happen in order for everything following it to occur. Literally everything following it is dependent on this conversation taking place.
Magnussen was expecting Sherlock when he arrived at Appledore and was expecting to receive Mycroft as a Christmas gift, so it was definitely planned in advance. Remove that plan, and everything else crumbles. The hospital canteen conversation needed to happen so that Sherlock could plan to drug everybody at Christmas, so that him and John could go to Appledore, so that Magnussen expected Sherlock and his Christmas gift, so that Sherlock could shoot Magnussen, so that Mary could be safe from Magnussen, so that Sherlock could be sent to Eastern Europe, so that he could be returned promptly with the threat of Moriarty back, so that he could help Mary with her AGRA problem, so that he would get cocky and get Mary shot, so that John would turn on Sherlock, so that Sherlock would go to hell to save John, so that Eurus would swoop in to fuck shit up. This is all a chain of events that simply could not have occurred if you remove the plan with Magnussen from happening.
SO YEAH, I DON’T THINK THIS CONVERSATION HAPPENED AND BECAUSE OF THAT I DON’T THINK ANYTHING FOLLOWING IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED EITHER.
(Or Moffat just didn’t think anyone would think too hard about it.)

It's even more interesting when we consider TAB the antithesis to season 4. In TAB Ms Hudson is given no lines/no significant role in the narrative whereas in S4 she's given an overblown role where in one scene she abducts Sherlock and goes on a wild car chase in order to reunite Sherlock with John. Similarly, Molly is drastically different. In TAB she hates Sherlock and is part of the cult of vengeful brides whereas in S4 she is shown as still pining for Sherlock and even goes through a painful confession of loving Sherlock. Eurus did not exist in TAB but she is shown [in that strange first (only?) meeting scene] to be the mirror of Moriarty. This in enforced by Moriarty and the story of Sherlock's first case as the drowning Karl Powers being overwritten with his first case instead being Eurus drowning Victor Trevor. Moriarty is highly linked to Sherlock's sexuality and (therefore) so is Eurus.
I have had the idea stewing in my head that Karl Powers was in fact a first love interest of Sherlock's and that's why Sherlock knew enough about him to know the missing shoes were important when he turned up dead.
What we know from the repeated story of Karl and then Victor is that Sherlock feels like his sexuality has been responsible for the death of boys in his past and he thinks the same thing will happen to John.
The good news is that when Sherlock embraces Eurus, he's embracing/accepting his sexuality -- and then (miraculously) John is saved from the well. Sherlock also is shown to continue to interact with Erus (his sexuality) and his family accepts her back in in some sense. She doesn't have a voice (which allowed her to control and manipulate in the past) but Sherlock and Erus play music together - which in itself was made sexual by Eurus asking when Sherlock first played a song if he'd ever had sex and then explaining that she had (against the will of the other person who she couldn't tell if they were a man or woman). So he's at peace with his heart and his sexuality at three end of S4.
However, it still leaves us with interesting questions - is Moriarty real or completely metaphorical (Moriarty has said several times that they are the same/one)? Are the deaths of the two boys metaphorical or real? If the boys and their deaths are real, is Sherlock's attraction to them in some way responsible for their death? Or is Sherlock actively responsible for killing them (because of their rejection)?
What we know about why Moriarty killed Karl is because Karl "laughed at" him. So, did Sherlock make an advance on Karl (a popular athlete) and get laughed at by him? Similarly, Eurus in some way felt rejected or excluded from Sherlock's playing with Victor. Are we to take from this that Sherlock killed Karl/Victor because of rejection? Did he form some sort of split personality over doing this? Is it like Fight Club in that Sherlock is actually both the Consultanting Criminal and the Consulting Detective and doesn't even know it? He's running around both creating and solving crime. Is that why Mycroft is always so overprotective and why, when it came to Magnusson, Mycroft doesn't try to stop him but instead says that Magnusson 'doesn't do much harm and is sometimes useful' - is he really talking about Sherlock there? 😱
Is Sherlock's real fear himself - what he will do to John if he lets his heart and labido have a say and makes an advance on John but is then rejected by John? 😱

Can we just note that, if this is all in Sherlock's head, a part of him (the same part that fellated a gun in TAB) believes the better use of a body is not 'science' but 'consumption' - eating - and here we are again at the dinner=sex metaphor

I Made a Bison*-with-Headphones Out of Paper
I made some other Sherlock-y type paper projects, too:
A friend in case I need someone to talk to,
a replica of the black origami lotus from TBB in case I need to let someone know they are marked for assassination,
an origami deer-stalker cap (shown here lined with tin-foil and modeled by Archimedes),
and a “Persian slipper” (khussa) color, cut, and paste project (I keep nicotine lozenges in mine.)
I’m told there will be an arts-and-crafts room @221bcon this year, and I plan to bring supplies and materials for the origami lotus, tin-foil lined deer-stalker, and Persian slipper to share**.
The bison* skull is my original work and I reconfigured the human skull so I can print, score, and cut the pieces for both with a scrapbooking machine***. If anyone is interested in attempting to assemble their own human or bison* skull, I would love nothing more than to give that brave person or persons**** the instructions and printed, scored, and cut cardstock to make a skull.
Unfortunately, I am emotionally fragile and terrified of preparing supplies for twenty or so skulls that no one wants. So, I am posting this in an attempt to gauge interest. If you are going to 221bcon and you want to attempt one of the skulls, reply to this post to let me know. (If you are not going to 221bcon and you are really interested in making the bison* skull, let me know anyway and I can email you the pdf or possibly snail mail you the printed, scored, and cut pages.)
Finally, if you read this far and you are not embarrassed on my behalf I would appreciate any signal boost you are willing to give by reblogging this post. Thank you.
* I spent a lot of time looking at bovine skulls and I’m fairly certain it’s actually a yak skull, not a bison. ** I figured these are relatively easy projects suitable for all ages. I intend to find some safety scissors and washable markers instead of only bringing the pointy scissors and sharpies I have lying around. *** I don’t want to say the brand name. There’s nothing wrong with scrapbooking, but I just never saw myself as the kind of person who buys a cr!cut. I did, though. I bought one for the sole purpose of cutting out peppakura/papercraft patterns. I’d feel bad, but it’s too awesome. **** Up to 12 people who are interested in the bison skull and 20 people who are interested in the human skull.

What the fuck is up with the timeline in season 4???
Sherlock shot CAM on the 25th of December. The hug happened on his birthday, so the 6th of January. Meaning that in the maximum of 12 days, all this happened: - Mary gave birth - John's hair got longer and greyer - They traveled the world - Mary got shot - John ignored Sherlock for 3 weeks - Sherlock got high asf - Sherlock planned all the shit that went down in TLD - Sherlock almost died Yes All this in 12 days???? What the fuck????

You know, I've been seeing some stuff lately about how certain scenes seem clunky, poorly written or out of place but if the exact same lines were reused for a different purpose, it would change the whole story. It seems to me this is one of those instances. They didn't need this scene. Nothing about it made a lot of sense in the sceme of things, but you get this gift of a line. Finally, Sherlock directly tells John how he feels about him in response to John defining a date as something people do if they like each other or to John (jealously) seeing how Sherlock likes everyone else but him (Irene, Lady Carmichael, Mary). This is the "I like you" before the "I love you" later.

The Night Before the Missing Episode
[There is a lot of Tumblr speculation (hope) that with the March 8th Billboard in TLD there might be a missing episode released tomorrow. This little ‘Night Before Christmas’ rhyme popped in my head - feel free to add on]
It’s the night before the missing episode And all through the Tumblrsphere Every heartbroken Johnlocker Is screaming 'for Christ’s sake, just let them be queer’!!! For Sherlock in his deerstalker And John is his 'stache Are a sad cherade - A long overdue slash. So what to our wounded hearts shall appeal? Why, TD12 season 4 away and make johnlock real! With a wiggle of Moffat nose And a twinkle of Gatiss eye Say, 'You clever, clever tinhatters, Kiss that rubbish goodbye…

You know, putting aside the possibility that a writer was just referencing a text he likes and even going beyond the fact that Mark was using this line to code Sherlock as gay and pinning - I think on a deeper level this lends credence to the theory that Sherlock has been in a coma since he jumped from Bart's. Sherlock is shown to read quite a variety of books. So, it's completely possible that Sherlock has read The Beautiful Room is Empty as well and so, in his attempt to conjure a way of apologising to John, his subconscious implants this romantic subtext (from a text he's familiar with) of a gay man longing for acceptance of himself and of his attraction to other men (one man in particular) and of his understanding that it will be met with rejection.
interesting thing, a tuxedo
a couple of months ago i was reading this book for my lgbt+ american history and literature class called The Beautiful Room is Empty by Edmund White, which is a semi-autobiographical book about a gay man growing up in the 50s and 60s (and it’s also really really good). but as i was trying to read it in peace i stumbled upon this line that just stopped me because i knew it, and i just sat there like ‘what the fuck’ before realizing why i recognized it:
“But for me, the tuxedos (which depersonalize waiters and lend distinction to friends)…”
here’s the paragraph in full
and i realized that it’s almost identical to one of sherlock’s lines in the empty hearse
and i was like oh my god MARK and it was bothering me for months because i researched it to see if maybe both sources were referencing something else altogether but i couldn’t find anything. and so finally this past sunday at the sherlocked con, i was like ‘shit i never asked mark about that book’ and i looked over and there was no one in line for an autograph from him so i went over and asked the woman next to him if i could take a few minutes to ask him a question
and she said yes and so i started telling him this whole story and it was really sweet because when i asked him if he’d read the book he was like “of course i have :)” like genuinely happy to be talking about this book and possibly to realize what i was bringing up
and i told him about how i’d recognized it and realized what it was and i was about to say ‘because it’s in the empty hearse!’ and he cut me off and said ‘it’s the line about the waiter’ and i was like ‘!!! yeah!’ and he started reciting the line with me like. saying it right behind him and i got so excited to have that finally answered, because i mean he just straight up told me that he referenced THAT quote in THAT SCENE
so um. he Did That thanks for coming to my talk
