What people miss with regards to the Jordan Neely/Daniel Penny story is that Penny didn’t choke him out because he’s a bad person. He did it because of socioeconomic factors which made him desperate. The alternative to him being found not guilty would be him going to prison, and that wouldn’t have been justice. Penny needs to be treated with grace and care in this undoubtably troubling time for him
I think my scambaiting post must be going around because I'm getting some asks about it. I'm mostly just deleting them if they're not interesting or instructive, but I think this one actually might be.
My OP made a gesture at a materialist analysis which should be performed. This material analysis would have to do with the flow of money, labour, and resources as it actually exists in the world: the extraction, extortion, and theft of raw materials; the purposeful, violent destabilisation of entire regions by the military arms of the USA, Canada, Europe &c. to force people to work for pennies, so that labour will be incredibly cheap compared to what it would cost if performed by most citizens in the imperial 'core'; and other measures that are taken to ensure that value flows from colonised nations to colonising nations. (These measures also include the devaluing of institutions in the 'periphery' such that advanced degrees from certain countries are simply worth less than others; and the restricted ability of those in the 'periphery' to travel or migrate across borders with the freedom afforded to those with imperial citizenship.)
So certain people are in a situation where structures and enforcers of power have made them poor and desperate on purpose so that they can be 'superexploited' at a level beyond that experienced by most people in the imperial 'core'. This is the purpose of imperialism, and it's the purpose of the concept of 'race.' People work in factories for very little money, because the imperial periphery is supposedly only good for the production of raw materials (fabric; t-shirt blanks; assembly of parts of electronics &c.); the design, the artisanship, the packaging, the 'refining,' the making of the chocolate bar from the cocoa, everything that confers 'value' to the item, is done in the imperial core, and that increased 'value' / sale price is added to the GDP of the country in which the product is completed.
In fact this 'raw material' is not 'raw' at all, and it also invovles design and artisanship—but the people of the 'third world' cannot 'design' anything and they cannot be 'artisans'—nothing they make can be labelled as 'handmade' or 'hand-sewn' even if it is literally made with their hands—because they are not considered as people in that way.
But that's the product realm. In terms of the internet (even setting aside the physical materials, space, energy, water &c. required to maintain the internet):
Things (such as Amazon's failed "Just Walk Out" thing) are advertised as "artificial intelligence" despite the fact that thousands of people in India are forced to do work that is tedious, time-consuming, and often horrific and traumatising (consider content moderation!!) in order to make them work. Their material conditions—which are created and maintained, in the most violent manner imaginable, on purpose in order to force them to do this work—render many people desperate enough to take these jobs.
If there are people, who are reachable online, who at a baseline are making a hundred times what you are making, whose currency has incredible purchasing power where you live, and you can get some of that money—if you can work for yourself this way, obviously you're going to do that. This happens because there's money to be made in it. If people can set up an operation and train hundreds of people in how to do this, and take most of the profits and still provide a salary that's attractive to people because of how high the margins are, then obviously that's going to happen. This is just, the concept of capitalism. If there is a way to make money doing something, someone is going to be doing that thing.
Material analysis is looking at the world as it actually exists, in order to figure out how materials, labour, and value are 'flowing' on local and global scales, as a means of determining why things happen the way they do. Like, on a base level, that's what it means to analyse something—to try to figure out why it happens the way it does.
This anon, in sending this ask, didn't understand what any of this meant, or didn't want to consider it, or something. They were unable or unwilling to consider a different lens than that of personal desert, personal merit, and innate personal badness / criminality. The concept of trying to understand where money is, how it moves and why, as a base level of knowledge necessary to understand why there is money to be made in doing certain things, doesn't compute to them—so they have to move things back into the realm of personal desert, and act like I'm saying that people who commit acts of interpersonal violence "deserve" to be allowed to commit that violence as long as they're going through something, whether or not the thing they're going through created the necessary circumstances for, or has any other direct relation with, the act of violence being committed (basically "some people commit violence to cope").
All of that is kind of typical—it's very normal for people to act like asking them to consider people in the 'third world' as actual human beings with human things like "circumstances" and "motivations" and "thoughts" that influence their actions is tantamount to spitting in their grandmother's face.
But what's most interesting to me about this ask is how, in order to dismiss the idea of material analysis as necessary to understand why things happen and to reassert an interpretive framework of individual criminality, anon uses the idea of interpersonal racial violence as something that we can all agree is caused by innate criminality and not by material factors. As if by comparing scamming to this act of violence, it emphasises the innate criminal personality at the root of both acts. As if, obviously, we can all agree that people who commit this kind of violence are just evil demons who "deserve" to be locked up—so saying "the material fact of present-day colonialism creates the conditions for this kind of scamming" is tantamount to saying "we shouldn't lock criminals up in prison." If the latter statement is unthinkable, then so, by comparison, is the former.
Except that this concept of "the criminal" as being a specific "type" of person who uniquely does and deserves evil, and who needs to be locked up in a cage for the good of the rest of society, is exactly what I am, in fact, intending to question. I think the anon would be surprised to learn about the vast body of work (I mean texts, but also direct activism) conducted under the heading of "prison abolition."

A few decades ago while I was visiting Coast City, I found an interesting partial poster in a head shop. It was advertising an archery exhibition by "the Green Arrows of the World" in Star City at the Civic Auditorium.
The painted illustration has a fellow in what looks to be the pre-beard Green Arrow costume, and several men in "ethnic" variations of that costume in various bow-drawing poses.
The bottom of the poster where presumably the date and time of this event would have been printed was missing. I purchased the poster at a very reasonable price, the owner of the shop disclaiming any knowledge of how he'd acquired it, though he was quite voluble on the Rolling Stones concert one I also picked up.
I've often wondered since if there was ever a Green Arrows of the World event since I've never heard of non-USAn GAs otherwise, or if it was someone's fun fantasy project they got printed. Any thoughts or insights?
Tumblr media
THIS poster? (Side note, this poster was done by truly legendary pop artist Jack Kirby who was probably most famous for his work at Marvel Comics but he also did a ton of miscellaneous work related to real life superheroes too) This exhibition was done during the early days of GA's career as you can see by the age of Speedy (Now Arsenal/Red Arrow) in the artwork. In short it IS the genuine article and the Green Arrows of the World was not only real but is STILL an extant organization. It consists of...well what it says on the tin. Green Arrow-esque heroes from around the world. There's been a lot of ink used about the prominence of archery in the heroic tradition (The book "Brave and the Bowmen" by Andy Diggle comes most easily to mind) with GA being its most obvious standard bearer in the modern day. Its membership has been fairly steady since inception including: Green Arrow and Speedy, naturally (USA)
Ace Archer (Japan)
Phantom (France)
Bush Bowman (Kenya)
Arabian Archer (Saudi Arabia)
Britannia Bowman (UK)
Troubadour (Spain)
Shark Sharpshooter (Samoa) Verde Flecha (Mexico) Archer of the Alps (Switzerland)
Emerald Bowman (India)
and Alba Archer (Scotland)
Now even those of you reasonably familiar are scratching your heads at most of these names but I promise this comes directly from the minutes of their only recorded meeting stored at the Moira Queen Memorial Library at Star City U. It's just that most of these heroes were fairly low key. Archer heroes and the urban vigilante type that they're usually part of tend toward low prominence and quiet careers because they're usually limited to action in singular cities or even neighborhoods. Most of them either did their time as small time protectors and then retired or are still fighting the good fight on a smaller scale. The Green Arrows of the World is a collective resource and support organization, sort of like Batman Inc in miniature. No one is quite sure who runs the organization's modest budget but lines have been drawn between it and Star City billionaire Oliver Queen whose philanthropy and focus on community organization projects is well known. They check up on one another, support one another where they can. There's only ever been one in person meeting of the organization, which this poster is from the public facing portion of, a charity drive run through the Queen Foundation for support of the then recent Boxing Day Tsunami. They're not open to public donation and are a rather private organization but spreading the word like this is part of my job. If the poster you have is different I highly, HIGHLY encourage you to turn it in at the museum of your choice. You may be holding an artifact of a much forgotten organization of heroes who really deserve the spotlight.

___ Scott, I have been long meaning to ask,
Did you ever deal with dissatisfaction of your end product art versus the quality of your supplies?
I say this as most art supplies that are readily available in the US, have its prices inflated easily up to three times the original (in USD) where I am from.
Though I desire greatly to support my local brands, they will rarely provide the gamut of quality found in the art supplies available in other countries. (Mainly Europe and North America).
Any time I come to ponder this, it brings me an anxiety that once my art evolves, I will be unable to follow up and upgrade the materials used for them; the cost of professional and international art supplies would make it unpractical in the long run.
This mainly affects me during the creation process, as I am constantly reminded that even those advertised and sold as artist grade where I live fall significantly behind those internationally known, and well respected art brands. (Arrtx, Blick, and even Winston & Newton are hardly heard of)
Consequently, I then think; if I am to purchase art supplies any more expensive, it might just not be worth and wasteful, as my art would not justify the cost.
I am aware this might not apply to everyone (maybe not to you, either!), but I am relatively new to this ─ and you are my greatest reference as an artist.
So, how would you do it? ~for-the-writing-artist
Hi. This is a great question that I'm asked a lot (especially from my fans in India) and I think the best answer that I have is that you will KNOW when you need to upgrade your art materials. In other words... if you're still young (under 25) and still learning... use what you have. You don't need good art materials to learn design, composition, proportions, values, negative space, color theory, and generally just building your style and confidence.
Use the cheap materials to get good at storytelling.
Find your voice.
Then... when you start to get to the point where you're getting job offers, commissions, or generally feeling like "yeah... I'm a professional now", then... THEN you can look into the "good stuff".
Until that day... you're still learning (though, to be honest... I'M still learning too. We're always learning) and there's no need to waste money on better materials.
Will better art supplies help your art? Absolutely.
Will it make you a better artist? Nope.
Work on getting better.
Work on learning.
The good art supplies can come later when your art (and you) are ready.
Sending Big Hugs from the Hobbit Hole. ♥♥♥
Scott

In 2017, Pratik Sinha and Mohammed Zubair cofounded the fact-checking website AltNews in India. Almost immediately, the pair were targeted with persistent and vicious attacks from the far-right news website OpIndia. Many of the attacks claimed that Zubair was a Rohingya Muslim who illegally migrated to India and that his cousin was a rapist. In several headlines, the site described Zubair as an “Islamist” spreading fake news.
This wasn’t far off from OpIndia’s other coverage: In addition to routinely attacking journalists and news sites critical of the government, OpIndia spreads conspiracies and, at times, outright disinformation, particularly about the country’s minority Muslim population. Founded in 2014, OpIndia is regularly name-checked by leading lawmakers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the site admits it is funded in part by ads run by the BJP. As hundreds of millions of Indians vote in elections across the country, critics fear that OpIndia’s election-related disinformation and overt support of the Modi government could further undermine trust in the democratic process. Already, the website has echoed Modi’s widely criticized description of the Muslim vote as “vote jihad.”
Yet despite this, US tech companies, which have rules against hate speech and disinformation, continue to platform OpIndia and, in some cases, allow it to continue to make money through advertising. OpIndia has a robust presence on Facebook, Instagram, and X. Additionally, a new report, shared exclusively with WIRED, has found that Google’s ad platform is being used to partially fund OpIndia’s operation.
“In an increasingly polarized space, they create a vicious narrative against you,” Sinha tells WIRED. “All of this is narrative building. Their job is to defame anyone who's critical of the government, and that's what they do.”
Despite repeated efforts by activists to defund the site—and the fact that publications that have partnered with a Google-supported election fact-checking initiative, Shakti, have fact-checked OpIndia’s articles and found it routinely publishes fake news—OpIndia continues to operate thanks in part to ads that Google’s ad exchange platform places next to its content. In 2019, Poynter’s International Fact Checking Network, which accredits publications as trustworthy arbiters of information, rejected OpIndia’s application.
“Google’s own publisher policies prohibit the monetization of content that incites hatred, incitement of racism, promoting discrimination of an individual or group,” says Sarah Kay Wiley, director of policy and partnerships at Check My Ads, a nonprofit digital advertising watchdog organization and author of the new report. “Google also says that they don't monetize or work with publishers that make claims that are false and could significantly undermine trust in an election or democratic process.”
Ad exchanges allow publishers to sell ad space and advertisers to buy it through an entirely automated process that happens in the split seconds before a website loads. Ad sellers and buyers set limits for price and spending, with Google taking a cut of all transactions. Because of the automated nature of the process, advertisers likely don’t realize that their products are showing up next to hateful and misleading content.
Other ad exchanges such as Magnite have discontinued working with OpIndia. If Google were to stop working with OpIndia, says Wiley, that “would definitely have a material impact.”
On Facebook, OpIndia runs pages in English and Hindi, with 310,000 followers and 431,000 followers in each language, respectively. Both pages list their administrator as Aadhyaasi Media and Content Services Private Limited, which owns OpIndia.
On its Hindi page, OpIndia has shared stories promoting the “love jihad” conspiracy theory, which asserts that Muslim men are trying to marry, seduce, or kidnap Hindus in order to force them to convert and create a demographic shift in Hindu-majority India, and has promoted false claims, including that a new inheritance law would reallocate wealth from Hindus to Muslims. Meta spokesperson Erin McPike did not comment on whether this content violated Meta’s policies, nor on whether Meta takes into account the violations of the Hindi page when assessing the English page.
These narratives then get picked up and spread on other platforms, like X and Telegram, says Siddharth Venkataramakrishnan, an analyst with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. “In some of these places there’s even more explicit calls for violence against Muslims or for the removal of Muslims,” he says. The site has international appeal as well: WIRED was able to find OpIndia articles shared in non-Indian, right-wing channels on Telegram, including a pro-Kremlin channel with over 1.3 million subscribers and numerous conspiracy channels with hundreds of thousands of followers.
The site is also highly active on the social media platform X with the official OpIndia account, which has 688,000 subscribers. OpIndia appears to pay for X Premium, giving it a blue checkmark, but did not respond to whether it subscribes to the service. WIRED has identified at least half a dozen OpIndia writers, columnists, and editors, including editor in chief Nupur Sharma, who has more than 680,000 followers, who appear to be subscribed to X Premium.
Sharma did not respond to a question about OpIndia monetizing its content via X Premium, and the company itself also failed to respond.
“It’s a hyper-partisan, right-wing outlet that set themselves up by saying that mainstream news media in India have a liberal bias, very similar to what American right-wing outlets say about professional journalism in America,” says Kalyani Chadha, an associate professor at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University who published an in-depth report in 2020 on India’s right-wing media ecosystem that included OpIndia. “They bill themselves as a news outlet, but there's not a lot of original reporting. A lot of it is commentary and opinion.”
In addition to Sinha and Zubair, OpIndia has regularly targeted journalists and outlets it sees as “far left.” In one piece, the site’s staff listed the Indian journalists and publications supposedly associated with billionaire George Soros, who has long been the target of conspiracies from the global far right. In another, they attacked veteran journalist Ravish Kumar, falsely accusing him of harboring sympathies for the perpetrators of a 2019 rape case. OpIndia has also spent years attacking Raqib Hameed Naik, an Indian journalist and the founder of India Hate Lab, which documents instances of hate speech and conspiracies that target India’s minority communities. This, he says, was made all the harder by government officials sharing the articles.
“The goal is to amplify this disinformation, and you have BJP leaders sharing this, so people think it’s authentic,” says Naik. “In the long term, this kind of builds the case against a critic, a journalist, that this person is bad, because there is reporting against them.”
When WIRED contacted OpIndia for comment, Sharma responded to our emailed questions by posting her responses on X.
When asked about hate speech and disinformation on her site, Sharma wrote: “Our critics are mostly Islamists, Jihadis, Terrorists, Leftists and their sympathizers—like yourself. We don't particularly care about any of them.” She then added that “Islamophobia does not exist” and pointed to an OpIndia article that outlines her position. Sharma added that it was “none of your concern” when asked if OpIndia was funded by the BJP. Sharma’s post also tagged one of the authors of this story, who then faced a torrent of abuse from Sharma’s followers.
For years, activists and researchers have tried to highlight the problematic content published by OpIndia. A 2020 campaign from UK-based advocacy group Stop Funding Hate led to a number of advertisers removing their ads from the site. Google, however, says the content published on the site does not appear to breach its own rules.
"All sites in our network, including Opindia, must adhere to our publisher policies, which explicitly prohibit ads from appearing alongside content promoting hate speech, violence, or demonstrably false claims that could undermine trust or participation in an election,” Google spokesperson Michael Aciman says. “Publishers are also subject to regular reviews, and we actively block or remove ads from any violating content."
Despite this, users can find ads for Temu or the Palm Beach Post next to many OpIndia articles promoting conspiracies and Islamophobia, placed with the help of ad-exchange platforms like Google’s Ad Manager, which is the market leader.
Facebook, meanwhile, says Wiley, is more of a “walled garden.” Once a publisher meets the company’s criteria for monetization, including having more than 1,000 followers, it can earn money from ads that run on the page.
While researchers that spoke to WIRED were unable to tell exactly how much the site has made from Google Ads and Facebook monetization, they said it’s likely that OpIndia is not solely reliant on the ad exchange for its revenue. It appears that, as with many news outlets in India, part of that funding comes in the form of more traditional advertising from a major client: the government.
“A large section of India's mainstream press depends on the government ads for their survival,” says Prashanth Bhat, professor of media studies at the University of Houston. “That revenue is critical for the mainstream media survival in a hypercompetitive media environment like in India. We have about 400 round-the-clock television news channels in India in different languages, and we have over 10,000 registered newspapers. For them to survive, they definitely need government patronage.”
Sharma confirmed that OpIndia is reliant in part on ads from the government. “Literally every media house gets advertising from various political parties,” said Sharma. “In fact, a part of your salary could also be funded by such parties and/or their sympathizers. Do get down from your high horse.”
The BJP has, however, also sought to help OpIndia in other ways. In 2019, the BJP reached out to Meta directly, asking the company to allow OpIndia to monetize on Facebook. Meta spokesperson McPike told WIRED that OpIndia’s English page is still able to monetize but that monetization on its Hindi page is currently not allowed “due to violations of our policies.”
“In order to monetize on Facebook, Pages must comply with our community standards, our partner monetization policies, and our content monetization policies,” McPike says.
Google did not respond to questions from WIRED about whether it had ever received a similar request from the Indian government. Google’s Aciman says, “As we do with all publishers, we’ve taken prior page-level enforcement action on this site when we’ve found policy violations. We will of course continue to enforce our policies on violating content across our publisher network.”
X did not respond to questions about whether OpIndia and its staff are able to monetize through X Premium or whether the company has ever received requests from the government to restore content from OpIndia or its staff. The company has complied with several takedown requests from the Indian government to ban accounts or tweets critical of the government.
But Wiley says that without transparency on the part of tech companies as to how they’re deciding which organizations are able to earn money through ads—and how much—outlets like OpIndia will continue to fall through the cracks.
“The business model of the internet at the end of the day is advertising, and what we're seeing over and over again is, that business model is broken,” she says. “Advertisers don't know where their money is going. And the biggest issue is that a lot of that is being funneled to mis- and disinformation online.”

#PrivacyPlease: The Hidden Dangers of Oversharing on Indian Social Media
Picture this: You're scrolling through your favorite social media app, double-tapping pictures of your friend's Goa vacation, when suddenly you see an ad for the exact sunglasses they're wearing. Coincidence? Think again! Welcome to the murky world of social media privacy breaches in India, where your likes, shares, and comments could be painting a detailed picture of your life – and not just for your friends to see.
Why I'm Raising the Red Flag
As a digital innovation enthusiast, I'm both amazed and alarmed by India's social media revolution. It's connecting millions and driving social change, but it's also creating a treasure trove of personal data that's catching the eye of not just advertisers, but also cybercriminals. It's like hosting a giant party where everyone's invited – including some guests you definitely didn't put on the list!
The Social Media Tsunami
India's love affair with social media is reaching epic proportions:
India has over 467 million social media users as of 2022 (Statista, 2023).
Indians spend an average of 2.36 hours per day on social media (GlobalWebIndex, 2022).
That's a lot of data being shared, liked, and potentially exposed!
The Sneaky Ways Your Posts Betray You
How is your innocent scrolling and posting leaving you vulnerable? Let's peek behind the curtain:
Data Mining Bonanza: Your interests, habits, and relationships are being mapped and sold.
Location Leaks: That check-in at the new café? It's telling more than just your taste in coffee.
Facial Recognition Fiasco: Your tagged photos could be training AI without your knowledge.
Clickbait Catastrophes: That irresistible quiz might be harvesting your personal info.
Who's Paying the Price?
When social media privacy goes out the window, the consequences can be far-reaching:
Individuals: Your digital footprint could affect job prospects, relationships, and personal security.
Businesses: Employee oversharing could lead to corporate data leaks.
Society: Targeted misinformation campaigns can exploit data to manipulate public opinion.
The Regulatory Tug-of-War
India's lawmakers are trying to catch up, but it's like trying to lasso a speeding bullet train:
The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, aim to regulate social media platforms, but privacy protection remains a challenge.
The Personal Data Protection Bill was passed in 2019.
It's a bit like trying to use a landline to manage a smartphone – the technology is evolving faster than the rules!
Reclaiming Your Digital Privacy
Don't worry, you don't need to become a social media hermit! Here's how to stay connected while protecting your privacy:
Audit your privacy settings – make sure you're not accidentally oversharing.
Think before you post – does the world really need to know you're on vacation right now?
Be wary of third-party apps – that fun game might be a data-harvesting tool in disguise.
Use strong, unique passwords for each platform – no, your pet's name isn't a strong password.
Enable two-factor authentication – it's like adding a second lock to your digital front door.
The Bottom Line
As India continues its social media love affair, we need to make sure we're not giving away the keys to our digital lives. Stay savvy, stay informed, and remember – in the world of social media, what happens online doesn't always stay online.
So, the next time you're about to post that perfectly filtered selfie, take a moment to think about who might be peeking over your digital shoulder!
Stay safe, stay smart, and maybe think twice before accepting that friend request from a long-lost relative you've never heard of!

Wiley will announce that it will shutter 19 more journals, some tainted by fraud.
Fake studies have flooded the publishers of top scientific journals leading to thousands of retractions and millions of dollars in lost revenue. The biggest hit has come to Wiley, a 217-year-old publisher based in Hoboken, N.J., which Tuesday will announce that it is closing 19 journals, some of which were infected by large-scale research fraud.
In the past two years, Wiley has retracted more than 11,300 papers that appeared compromised, according to a spokesperson, and closed four journals. It isn’t alone: At least two other publishers have retracted hundreds of suspect papers each. Several others have pulled smaller clusters of bad papers.
Although this large-scale fraud represents a small percentage of submissions to journals, it threatens the legitimacy of the nearly $30 billion academic publishing industry and the credibility of science as a whole.
The discovery of nearly 900 fraudulent papers in 2022 at IOP Publishing, a physical sciences publisher, was a turning point for the nonprofit. “That really crystallized for us, everybody internally, everybody involved with the business," said Kim Eggleton, head of peer review and research integrity at the publisher. “This is a real threat."
The sources of the fake science are “paper mills"—businesses or individuals that, for a price, will list a scientist as an author of a wholly or partially fabricated paper. The mill then submits the work, generally avoiding the most prestigious journals in favor of publications such as one-off special editions that might not undergo as thorough a review and where they have a better chance of getting bogus work published.
World-over, scientists are under pressure to publish in peer-reviewed journals—sometimes to win grants, other times as conditions for promotions. Researchers say this motivates people to cheat the system. Many journals charge a fee to authors to publish in them.
Problematic papers typically appear in batches of up to hundreds or even thousands within a publisher or journal. A signature move is to submit the same paper to multiple journals at once to maximize the chance of getting in, according to an industry trade group now monitoring the problem. Publishers say some fraudsters have even posed as academics to secure spots as guest editors for special issues and organizers of conferences, and then control the papers that are published there.
“The paper mill will find the weakest link and then exploit it mercilessly until someone notices," said Nick Wise, an engineer who has documented paper-mill advertisements on social media and posts examples regularly on X under the handle @author_for_sale.
The journal Science flagged the practice of buying authorship in 2013. The website Retraction Watch and independent researchers have since tracked paper mills through their advertisements and websites. Researchers say they have found them in multiple countries including Russia, Iran, Latvia, China and India. The mills solicit clients on social channels such as Telegram or Facebook, where they advertise the titles of studies they intend to submit, their fee and sometimes the journal they aim to infiltrate. Wise said he has seen costs ranging from as little as $50 to as much as $8,500.
When publishers become alert to the work, mills change their tactics.
“It’s like a virus mutating," said Dorothy Bishop, a psychologist at the University of Oxford, one of a multitude of researchers who track fraudulent science and has spotted suspected milled papers.
For Wiley, which publishes more than 2,000 journals, the problem came to light two years ago, shortly after it paid nearly $300 million for Hindawi, a company founded in Egypt in 1997 that included about 250 journals. In 2022, a little more than a year after the purchase, scientists online noticed peculiarities in dozens of studies from journals in the Hindawi family.
Scientific papers typically include citations that acknowledge work that informed the research, but the suspect papers included lists of irrelevant references. Multiple papers included technical-sounding passages inserted midway through, what Bishop called an “AI gobbledygook sandwich." Nearly identical contact emails in one cluster of studies were all registered to a university in China where few if any of the authors were based. It appeared that all came from the same source.
“The problem was much worse and much larger than anyone had realized," said David Bimler, a retired psychology researcher in Wellington, New Zealand, who started a spreadsheet of suspect Hindawi studies, which grew to thousands of entries.
Within weeks, Wiley said its Hindawi portfolio had been deeply hit.
Over the next year, in 2023, 19 Hindawi journals were delisted from a key database, Web of Science, that researchers use to find and cite papers relevant to their work, eroding the standing of the journals, whose influence is measured by how frequently its papers are cited by others. (One was later relisted.)
Wiley said it would shut down four that had been “heavily compromised by paper mills," and for months it paused publishing Hindawi special issues entirely as hundreds of papers were retracted. In December, Wiley interim President and Chief Executive Matthew Kissner warned investors of a $35 million to $40 million revenue drop for the 2024 fiscal year because of the problems with Hindawi.
According to Wiley, Tuesday’s closures are due to multiple factors, including a rebranding of the Hindawi journals and low submission rates to some titles. A company spokesperson acknowledged that some were affected by paper mills but declined to say how many. Eleven were among those that lost accreditation this past year on Web of Science.
“I don’t think that journal closures happen routinely," said Jodi Schneider, who studies scientific literature and publishing at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The extent of the paper mill problem has been exposed by members of the scientific community who on their own have collected patterns in faked papers to recognize this fraud at scale and developed tools to help surface the work.
One of those tools, the “Problematic Paper Screener," run by Guillaume Cabanac, a computer-science researcher who studies scholarly publishing at the Université Toulouse III-Paul Sabatier in France, scans the breadth of the published literature, some 130 million papers, looking for a range of red flags including “tortured phrases."
Cabanac and his colleagues realized that researchers who wanted to avoid plagiarism detectors had swapped out key scientific terms for synonyms from automatic text generators, leading to comically misfit phrases. “Breast cancer" became “bosom peril"; “fluid dynamics" became “gooey stream"; “artificial intelligence" became “counterfeit consciousness." The tool is publicly available.
Another data scientist, Adam Day, built “The Papermill Alarm," a tool that uses large language models to spot signs of trouble in an article’s metadata, such as multiple suspect papers citing each other or using similar templates and simply altering minor experimental details. Publishers can pay to use the tool.
With the scale of the paper-mill problem coming into ever better focus, it has forced publishers to adjust their operations.
IOP Publishing has expanded teams doing systematic checks on papers and invested in software to document and record peer review steps beyond their journals.
Wiley has expanded its team working to spot bad papers and announced its version of a paper-mill detector that scans for patterns such as tortured phrases. “It’s a top three issue for us today," said Jay Flynn, executive vice president and general manager of research and learning, at Wiley.
Both Wiley and Springer Nature have beefed up their screening protocols for editors of special issues after seeing paper millers impersonate legitimate researchers to win such spots.
Springer Nature has rejected more than 8,000 papers from a suspected paper mill and is continuing to monitor its work, according to Chris Graf, the publisher’s research-integrity director.
The incursion of paper mills has also forced competing publishers to collaborate. A tool launched through STM, the trade group of publishers, now checks whether new submissions were submitted to multiple journals at once, according to Joris van Rossum, product director who leads the “STM Integrity Hub," launched in part to beat back paper mills. Last fall, STM added Day’s “The Papermill Alarm" to its suite of tools.
While publishers are fighting back with technology, paper mills are using the same kind of tools to stay ahead.
“Generative AI has just handed them a winning lottery ticket," Eggleton of IOP Publishing said. “They can do it really cheap, at scale, and the detection methods are not where we need them to be. I can only see that challenge increasing."

Tumblr media
This comprehensive guide aims to assist businesses in navigating the selection process and identifying the top flex printing advertising services in India.
Understanding Flex Printing Advertising:
Flex printing involves the use of flexible vinyl material known as PVC (polyvinyl chloride) to create visually compelling banners, hoardings, signage, and other promotional materials. Tumblr media
Flex printing offers several advantages, including durability, weather resistance, vibrant colors, and cost-effectiveness, making it an ideal choice for both short-term and long-term advertising campaigns.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Flex Printing Advertising Services:
Experience and Expertise: Evaluate the experience and expertise of the flex printing advertising service provider. Look for agencies with a proven track record in delivering successful campaigns across various industries. Portfolio and Reputation: Review the portfolio of the flex printing advertising service provider to gauge the quality and diversity of their work. Pay attention to the design aesthetics, printing quality, and overall impact of their previous projects. Additionally, consider their reputation in the industry, including client reviews, testimonials, and awards received for excellence in advertising.
Printing Technology and Equipment: Inquire about the printing technology and equipment utilized by the advertising service provider. High-quality materials ensure longevity and maintain the visual appeal of printed advertisements over time.
Turnaround Time and Logistics: Evaluate the turnaround time and logistics offered by the flex printing advertising service provider. Choose agencies that can accommodate tight deadlines without compromising on quality. Additionally, inquire about installation services, transportation, and logistical support for the timely deployment of printed materials at designated locations.

How to Choose the Best Power Supply in Mumbai?
You might have the best signage for advertising your brand and its products, but it won’t work without the appropriate power supply. Without the necessary power supply, it becomes difficult to ensure fruitful execution of advertising ability. Thus, you need to ensure that you get hold of the best power supply in Mumbai.
However, choosing the best power supply becomes a difficult decision at times, with numerous options available. Here, you must go for the top power supply companies in India. Consequently, one must look at a few parameters to adjudicate their characteristics before arriving at a final thought.
Tips to Choose the Best Option
Certain tips will help you make the right decision;
Form Factor
The power supplies come in different sizes according to the customer's needs. Most of the standard builders opt for standard-ATX power supply. A small form factor PSU might be helpful if you are looking for a smaller system. Thus, ensure that you thoroughly examine the product specifications before finalizing the purchase.
Figuring Out The Right Wattage
The power supply requirements differ from one LED module to another. Here, you need to figure out the right wattage for your LED module for signage. Once you have that figured out, choose the power supply unit offering the appropriate power supply.
Higher Power Doesn’t Mean Higher Quality
Many people get deceived by the notion that higher power generation would resemble a higher quality. Some power supply units might sport a 500W but might not offer the same continued power supply for longer. Numerous companies try to build up a brand image by sporting a greater power supply than actual. This deceives the probable customers. In addition, such companies claim to offer higher wattages at lower prices to attract customers. Eventually, the customers realize they made the wrong decision.
Here, it becomes necessary to choose the top power supply companies in India to ensure you get the best quality products at a trusted price.
Consider the Expert Reviews
When it comes to selecting the right power supply unit for your advertising billboards or backlit boxes, do not rely on sparkling advertisements. Here, you have to consider the experts' reviews and opinions to ensure that you get your hands on the right product. The source for such expert review depends on the tests and examinations a PSU goes through. The tougher the examination process, the better the chances for an authentic result. The power supply units surviving the quality checks and associated tests emerge to be the most trusted ones. Here, the industry experts keep a constant tab on the products to rank them every year. Consider looking at the expert reviews on your preferred product's website before making the final decision.
Modularity Parameters
Modularity forms an integral part of your power supply as it determines whether you have control over the wires attached to the unit. There are different types of modular power supplies to facilitate the right choice. Let us take a glance at them;
-       Fully Modular Power Supply: None of the wires come pre-connected in a fully modular power supply. You helm the connection responsibility, thus assuring complete control.
-       Semi-Modular Power Supply: Semi-modular power supplies try to ease your worries by coming with a few pre-connected wires. These are the most important ones, including motherboard power. The remaining cables are up to you to connect.
-       Non-Modular Power Supply: This type of power supply takes away all the burden of connecting the cables. All the cables come pre-connected, whether your LED backlit screens need them or not. The non-modular power supply will come in handy for people requiring connections to multiple billboards or power requirements. If one buys it to meet a singular requirement, the remaining wires will be wasted.
Check the Efficiency Rating
You must always try to purchase the power supply units that sport a higher efficiency rating. A higher efficiency rating would symbolize a higher power output throughout a longer duration without fail. In addition, the electricity consumption would not be high, thus saving you enough money. The efficiency rating depends on how well your power supply transforms alternating current into direct current. The 80 Plus certification is the most common parameter here.
Necessary Certifications
Your power supply unit must have the necessary certifications to ensure its authenticity and efficiency. When the PSU has all the required certifications, you can trust it for some heavy-duty power supply. However, you must be careful about fraud certifications.
Final Thoughts
Always trust Top Power Supply Companies in India like HiiSign, who dedicate their expertise to crafting the best products. With assured power supply support, your advertisement will rise to the ranks of efficiency.

How Does the Amazon PPC Advertising Work?
PPC adverts are part of Amazon's internal advertising system. Businesses, agencies, and third-party sellers can advertise in Amazon's search results and their competitors' results pages using Amazon PPC Management. That way, merchants can show Amazon shoppers relevant products at checkout, improving the likelihood of a sale. Due to its effectiveness, three out of four Amazon sellers utilize this method.
Tumblr media
Definition of Amazon PPC
Amazon PPC is the paid advertising service provided by Amazon to its independent sellers. It lets vendors set up advertising campaigns for their wares and collects payment from them at each interaction with a potential consumer.
Now the question at hand is, how much does pay-per-click advertising on Amazon actually cost?
How Much Does Amazon PPC Cost?
Each seller's Amazon PPC charges for Amazon PPC Services will be different based on the number of ad campaigns they're running and the number of keywords they're aiming for. Depending on the degree of competition in your industry, you could spend anywhere from $0.15 to $6 per click.
In What Ways Does Pay-Per-Click Marketing Function?
PPC advertising takes on a variety of forms depending on the medium, but typically consists of the following steps:
Determine your end goal before deciding on a campaign format.
The settings, audiences, devices, locations, schedules, etc., should all be fine-tuned.
List your spending limits and proposed bidding approach.
Enter the web address of the page you wish to visit.
Make a commercial ad.
Your ad's quality and relevance, as well as your campaign's budget, bid, and parameters, are all factored into an algorithm that then determines where your ad will show, how often it will appear, and how much it will cost per click.
Platforms will reward advertisers with better ad placement and lower costs if they take the time to generate high-quality, user-friendly PPC campaigns.
How Does Google Ads' PPC System Work?
Marketers choose keywords to bid on while building ads. You can instruct Google to show your ad for queries that match or are related to the keyword by bidding on it.
Google uses formulas and auctions to select ads for each search. Before entering the auction, your ad's relevance to the term, expected CTR and landing page quality will determine its Quality Score.
Your Quality Score multiplied by the maximum bid determines your Ad Rank. High-ranking ads are displayed first. This technique lets successful advertising access specific audiences at affordable prices. It resembles an auction.

Top AdSense Alternatives For Indian Publishers To Earn Money Online
Tumblr media
Are you an Indian publisher looking for new ways to monetize your website? If so, then you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll be discussing the best AdSense alternatives for Indian publishers to make money online. Discover which platforms offer the most competitive rates and have the best features that will help you maximize your earnings.
As you might be aware, Google AdSense is not the only game in town when it comes to making money from your website or blog. There are a number of other options available that can be just as effective, if not more so. In this article, we will take a look at some of the best AdSense alternatives for Indian publishers.
One of the best emerging popular alternatives to AdSense you can rely on is 7searchppc, It offers all related services just the way AdSense does at an absolutely reasonable rate.
You can connect with your target audience on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and others with 7Search PPC. With the aid of 7Search PPC, you may write the ideal article and position yourself as an industry authority on social media.
Media.net is another great AdSense alternative operated by Yahoo! and Bing, and it offers a very similar service to AdSense. The main difference is that media.net works on a CPC (cost per click) basis, rather than CPM (cost per thousand impressions). This means that you will earn money based on the number of clicks that your ads receive, rather than the number of times they are displayed.
Another great alternative to AdSense is Amazon Associates. With Amazon Associates, you can earn commission on products that are purchased through your affiliate link. This can be an extremely effective way to monetize a website or blog that is focused on product reviews or other product-related content.
Finally, one of the most unique and exciting alternatives to AdSense is VigLink. VigLink works by automatically converting certain keywords on your website into affiliate links. You will earn a commission when someone clicks on one of these links and makes a purchase. This can be an extremely effective way to monetize a website or blog that contains a lot of product-related content
What are the best alternatives for Indian publishers?
There are a number of great AdSense alternatives for Indian publishers to make money online. Here are a few of the best:

RevenueHits: RevenueHits is an ad network that specializes in performance-based advertising. They offer CPC, CPM, and CPA pricing models and have a strong presence in India.
Benefits of Using Alternative Advertising Networks
There are many benefits of using alternative advertising networks for Indian publishers. Some of the most notable benefits include:
Increased Earning Potential: One of the biggest benefits of using an alternative advertising network is that it can potentially help you earn more money. This is because these networks usually have higher CPMs (cost per thousand impressions) than AdSense, which means you can earn more money for every thousand pageviews you generate.
More Targeted Ads: Another benefit of using an alternative advertising network is that the ads tend to be more targeted and relevant to your audience. This is because these networks usually have access to a wider range of advertisers than AdSense, which means they can offer more targeted and relevant ads to your readers.
Access to More Ad Formats: Alternative advertising networks also tend to offer a wider range of ad formats than AdSense, which means you can experiment with different types of ads to see what works best for your website or blog. For example, some networks offer video ads, floating/pop-up ads, and even sponsored posts, which can all be great ways to monetize your website or blog.
Better Reporting and Analytics: Most alternative advertising networks also offer better reporting and analytics tools than AdSense, which can be very helpful in tracking your earnings and understanding your audience better. This information can be very valuable in helping you optimize your website or blog for maximum earnings potential.
Tips for Maximizing Profits from Alternatives
When it comes to online advertising, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one website or blog may not work for another. The key is to find the right mix of ad types and placements that work best for your particular audience and traffic levels.
Here are a few tips to help you maximize profits from alternatives to AdSense:
Test different ad types and placements.
Don’t rely on AdSense alone. Experiment with other ad types and placements to see what works best for your website or blog. There are many different ad networks and exchange platforms available, so take the time to find the ones that work best for you.
Use multiple ad networks.
AdSense is just one of many ad networks available to publishers. By using multiple ad networks, you can increase your chances of finding high-paying sponsorships and display ads.
Optimize your website for higher CTRs.
The amount you earn per click depends largely on how well your website or blog performs in terms of click-through rates (CTRs). Make sure your website is designed and organized in a way that encourages visitors to click on ads. This includes having a clean design, relevant content, and proper ad placement.
Take advantage of native advertising.
Native advertising is a type of advertising that blends in with the surrounding content on a webpage or app. It can be less intrusive
Conclusion
As you can see, there are plenty of AdSense alternatives available to Indian publishers who want to make money online. Each option has its own advantages and drawbacks that should be considered before making a decision. Ultimately, the best AdSense alternative will depend on your website’s specific needs and what kind of results you’re hoping to achieve. With any luck, this article has given you some insight into the different options out there so that you can find the right one for your website!
