On Lovely Runner and OG Seon Jae

You know, what will continue to hurt my heart (no matter how the show ends, which will end happily of course wdym) is Seon Jae from the Original 2008/2023 timeline. Sure, we all know our Seon Jae is the one and the same, and that version of him ceased to exist the moment Im Sol started to alter things. Still. It hurts to think that boy lived his whole life in guilt, misery and longing for the person who meant the most to him in the whole wide world. The person who brought the downbad loser side of him which no one else ever saw, the person who turned him into a pulp of emotions, the person who made him love rain, something he had hated his whole life (and I LOVE how his hatred for rain wasn't tied to some trauma unlike other kdramas but something very ordinary instead, LOVE IT). His guilt that he couldn't protect that person, that his split second of decision/action/inaction caused that person so much grief and pain, that his own 'greed' to spend more time with that person led to such a big catastrophe in their life. His misery that he couldn't go back in time and undo that one moment, or just any of those moments, where he didn't wake her up, or didn't stop the bus, or didn't get off the bus with her instead of picking up his stuff, or didn't take a taxi to reach her sooner, or didn't run a bit faster maybe to get to her as he saw her before his eyes.

Regret is a terrible, terrible thing to live with. And living with such immense regret for 15 years? And yet, he didn't think of ending it all. Because that is not who Seon Jae is, no matter which timeline. Even when he had to give up swimming, which was his deceased mother's dream and something that made him genuinely happy, he never gave up on living. He was there, so he could do whatever he could for Im Sol if needed. He was there, because her being safe was important, the most important thing for him, beyond his image, his career and everything the world was willing to offer to him. He was there, because Im Sol was there. Because they shared the same sky, because he could check up on her secretly to make sure she was doing alright, because life was okay and bearable with her existence in it, even if she wasn't a part of it.

True to the lyrics he wrote, he considered her a gift from the heavens. It was okay because living meant he could keep loving her for as long as he wanted, cherish her, remember her, even if she didn't remember him. Maybe he was waiting for a day she would eventually remember him? There was a chasm between his guilt/misery and longing, which he couldn't cross, wouldn't cross, mostly in fear of hurting Im Sol again, so all he could do was love silently, and wait. Wait for a person who would never actually remember him, nor be with him.

The boy that endured the heartache of a lifetime for 15 years, all he wanted to do was live in gratitude for that person who gave him reasons to live, who made him love rain. And then that boy was gone. Thrown off a balcony. Top swimmer 'marine boy' Seon Jae falling into a pool, the irony. And the whole world thought he was gone of his own volition. The world never got to see the pain behind those eyes that smiled when he sang. Most importantly, Im Sol never knew the pain and longing he endured all those years. Even though she learns later on that he was the one who saved her in the original timeline, she never got to know the guilt that continued to haunt him for the rest of his life. That boy left the world thinking his love was unrequited. That he never got to be with the one he loved. What makes me emotional is that he was able to meet her one last time, as if fate was giving him his most desired parting gift. What hurts me the most is that he never got to know the person who made him love rain, finally got to know why he loved rain. That the person finally remembered him. Im Sol finally remembered him, even though it came at the cost of his life. And he didn't deserve it.

Takua’s number of total memory resets is technically four, as he was wiped twice during the time slip. The first wipe happened when the Order kidnapped and brainwashed him, the second was at the end of it after he’d been settled into Ta-Metru when Mata Nui wiped the last six months from everyone except the Order’s memory.

Technically that last wipe wasn’t a total one as far as most affected beings were concerned, but he had less than six months worth of memories left at that point so it was tabula rasa time again.

It must have been very strange for his neighbours. It would seem like a totally normal day for them but there’s this guy that woke up in the hut next door who they’ve never seen before and remembers nothing except his own name and he’s freaking out a bit. He doesn’t know who anyone is or what his job is meant to be. But the hut looks recently lived-in, when last they remember it had been empty for quite some time…

On Lovely Runner: Death and Confessions.

You realize the most heartbreakingly beautiful thing is that Seon Jae isn't worried about him dying per se, but what happens after the fact.

Do I die because of you? Trying to save you?...

and she doesn't respond, he finally understands. And he's finally relieved too. He's relieved because the 2023 Seon Jae did something the 2008/2009 Seon Jae and every freaking other Seon Jae would do no matter the time and space. He's relieved because that means she is in his life in the future. The future that seemed so bleak without Im Sol a while back doesn't seem bleak anymore, even if he knows he would die in it.

If I die trying to save you, I'm fine with that...

And so he confesses to her. But more than that, he consoles her. Like it's his last will, his ultimate wish. Because he knew he would leave Im Sol behind him after/if he dies, all alone, blaming herself for Seon Jae's death, running through time and space, trying to bend its' rules, bend fate, putting herself in harm's way over and over again, reliving all her traumas to save him from that one incident 14 years from now, traveling as many times as she can to change any variables as she can in all the different timelines as long as it means saving him in that one timeline. He was confessing to her, yes, but what he was doing more was consoling her, consoling the Im Sol who would be miserable in 2023.

It doesn't matter…

letting her know that it was fine with him, that she shouldn't blame herself for what happens in future, that she might not realize this but even if she could ask the Seon Jae in 2023 before he died/was stabbed apparently because of Im Sol, that version of him would never regret dying to save her. He knows no matter the timeline, he would never regret saving her, because to him, saving her means saving him. He knows that he would never regret living a brief life with his Sol-ah, his Solie, rather than living a life that is longer but filled with sighs over his unrequited love and the earnest longing for the only person who makes his time flow. He's the same guy who loved swimming and was heartbroken over the fact that he could no longer do the one thing that made him shine, but who never regretted it because being a swimmer made him happy, he was happy while it lasted, and he could never regret being that happy.

When that same Seon Jae confesses, it is not just the 20 year old Seon Jae but also the 34 year old Seon Jae, relaying his own time-capsule message to the 34 year old Im Sol: that his death, no matter which timeline, is not her fault, never her fault. That the 2023 Seon Jae, even in his final moments, would not regret seeing her for the first time with the yellow umbrella, he would not regret meeting her, or knowing her, or loving her, or being an absolute downbad loser for her, he would not regret having her in his life and dying with the thought of them loving each other all this time, he would not regret leaving the world knowing the love he gave, the memories they made would be cherished by her, he would not regret knowing that she would continue to love him despite him not being able to love her anymore (which he would, even after death, if only he could). He would NEVER regret doing any of it, and so she shouldn't regret it either, she shouldn't blame herself either, because she is not at fault. It is his decision to make. And he would happily be sucked into her orbit on every occasion, in every timeline, even if the end seems evident and inevitable.

Why don't you think about yourself? Please think about yourself only!...

and the first thing he did back then, was tell her to break up with the guy who he thought was using her. Here again, he is thinking about himself. What Im Sol doesn't realize is that, to Seon Jae, thinking about her is thinking about himself. So even when he's confessing to her (for a bazillionth time), his confession comes from a place of self-preservation where he prioritizes Sol over him (because that is what being selfish means to him). He doesn't want his Solie, his Sol-ah, to be miserable, to be suffering, to be in pain. Never because of him. Especially because of him. Because she should know that as long as she is in his life, he is happy. He will be happy. No matter where time and space and life take him, he'll be a happy man, he'll die a happy man. She has to know that. Knowing that she loves him is enough for him, enough for him to live an eternity's worth of life, even if there's imminent danger at the end of that eternity.

This little book has gone on quite the journey!

I began writing it in 2010-2011, under the title “First Impressions”. It was intended to be the sophomore follow-up to my debut novel, but it didn’t land with my first, nor my second agent. After two more title changes and nearly a decade of dabbling with edits, a fortuitous stint on Wattpad, and the utterly unforeseen but gratifying Watty Award win, I was stunned and delighted when W by Wattpad Books reached out to inquire about the rights on the book.

Working with this publishing team has been, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable experiences of my writing career. I cannot thank them all deeply and earnestly enough for all the hard work they’ve put into my story.

Years ago, one of closest friends called this story my “airport book”, maintaining that this would be the one that was going to be mainstream and accessible enough for the wider reading public. And it turns out she was right!

As of today, TIME AND TIDE is now available anywhere books are sold, including the Hudson Booksellers in most major American airports.

It is quite literally a dream come true.
