Superman #256 September 1972

I wasn’t quite ten when I picked this book off the spinner rack, but even then I was intrigued by the attractive Tigerwoman on the cover, and thought “Wowo!  Superman’s got a hot, new villainess to battle!”  Yeah, about that time for me girls - or at least hot Tigerwomen - weren’t so “yucky” anymore.  And cover artist Nick Cardy sure did a great job on her.

Unfortunately for me, the Tigerwoman is only part of the back-up “The Private Life of Clark Kent” story, and not really a super-villain.  Clark has signed up to be a Big Brother for an orphan, and takes the tyke out for a field trip.  The kid isn’t impressed.  His fellow orphans got Big Brothers who are actors or football players or fighter pilots.  He got stuck with some boring TV reporter.  And the Tigerwoman turns out to just be a carnival worker who got hypnotized into thinking she’s a real tiger, but once she sees her reflection she returns to normal.

The main story had Superman battling an advanced fighter jet powered by cosmic energy.  The jet is controlled by the mind of it’s creator, who has gone a little coo-coo after prolonged exposure to the cosmic rays.  The jet also has the ability to transform itself into other objects (a robot, a telephone booth, etc) years before someone else came up with an entire toy line (and animation/film franchise) based on the same idea.

Both stories written by Cary Bates, with art by the Swanderson team.
