Beth O'Leary Is the Best Rom-Com Author
There are many things I love about The Flat Share and Beth O’Leary’s narrative style. Many things that I cannot help but laugh at (and cry at) and overall simply appreciate when it comes to good writing. Let me show you some of my favourite details. Let’s start with one very important wonderful detail – the representation of bigger bodies in romance. Now I know Tiffy isn’t described as a ‘s…

BOOKS I'VE READ IN 2025 -> The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary ★★★★★
There’s so much here. Jokes, secrets, stories, the slow unfolding of two people whose lives have been changing in parallel – or, I don’t know, in synch. Different times, same place.

just finished the tv adaptation they did of the flatshare by beth o leary... worst decision of my life they butchered it so bad it was almost unrecognisable. it wasn't even a good tv show on its own
#the flatshare#makes me so sad#they turned tiffy into a disaster millenial stereotype... who is THIN she should not be thin#and she is into CRAFTS and she has an eclectic sense of style and she works for a publishing company who only publish instructional craft#books. not for a shitty soulless buzzfeed-esque online magazine#and RACHEL IS HER FRIENDDDD not a weird frenemy#them making her a lesbian was almost enough to save her but then they had her say 'i don't know what dicks look like i'm a gold star' DIEEE#and leon was just... completely free of a personality#and they spent so long with holly in the first 4 episodes and then when she died it was like she never existed in the fucking first place#she was just never mentioned again#and why did they change gertie's name to maia for no good reason. don't pmo you can't have a couple named maia and mo#it's just. it makes me SAD#the book is so lovely and they just completely stripped it for parts

Tiffy e Leon dividem a cama.

The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary is an excellent rom-com, an unputdownable read that also deals with serious issues. Tiffy is a young assistant editor slowly trying to get over an ex who she is slowly going to realize was emotionally abusive. Leon is a dedicated professional nurse whose brother was wrongfully imprisoned. Leon works nights and needs an extra source of income, so he puts out an ad: someone who will share the apartment, sleep in his one-bedroom at night, and be gone by the time he returns in the morning. As the two flatmates (bedmates?) switch off, their post-it notes become increasingly personal, and sparks begin to fly.
The book is sweet, emotional, and spicy at turns. Tiffy and Leon felt real and realistic, richly drawn out and reasonably complex. Even their POV voices were well-crafted and thought out, Tiffy more chatty and Leon more blunt, shy, short. O'Leary draws on several classic romance tropes to build out a fun novel with truly compelling storylines about abuse and trauma, and with a distinctive and believable set of characters. The side storylines were as fascinating as the main ones (ex. whether Leon can track down the long-lost love, a fellow soldier, for a veteran before he passes away). Good stuff all around.
Content warnings for emotional abuse, stalking, trauma, death/grief.

♥︎ hockey is my favorite sport but i love baseball and WWE (where my rhea, tiffy, and becky stans at??)
♡ i love watching college hockey, my favorite teams are umich but my family will kill me if they see me watching umich football (so i watch osu...) hahaha
♥︎ one of my favorite things to do is to bake! i'm pretty good at it but i fear i am lazy as all hell and don't like to clean up the mess, so i don't do it often. i also like reading, playing tennis, and writing.
♡ i am a chronically ill girlie because i was legit born without an immune system. i also was born with JIA/JRA, gilbert's, ME/CFS, and later in my life i learned i have adhd and anxiety. to summarize, my doctor and i are best friends.

may reading wrap-up!
1. hell bent by leigh bardugo - this book has taken me absolutely forever to finish (final year of uni is a BITCH) but i loved it a lot!! i loved ninth house but i liked this one even more because the characters and the world already being established meant that we got to actually focus a bit more on the characters and their relationships to each other, which is the best part. To Me. <3
2. the flatshare by beth o' leary - this is a reread but i listened to the audiobook for the first time and it was SO GOOD!!!! carrie hope fletcher is the perfect tiffy and i loved the irish accent on the guy playing leon :). anyways i've loved this book for years now but i recently watched the tv show they made of it and it was just so shockingly bad and offensive that i had to reread the book to heal. and it was really good of course <3 my favourite straight adult romance of all time
3. the rest of us just live here by patrick ness - this was another audiobook and another reread lmao but i read this when i was maybe 12? and i really really liked it! so i wanted to see if it held up and honestly it did !! i still really liked it; i love the characters and i love the premise so so much it's so interesting. especially because i've read a lot of supernatural books like the ones that this was parodying and it really is interesting to explore the other side of things!! there were a few things that were a bit weird and maybe unnecessary (jared's whole cat god situation? what) but overall i still really loved it which is a relief honestly
4. release by patrick ness - this was another audiobook (i've been honestly too busy to sit down and pick up a physical book😭) but it was honestly so weird... i love some of patrick ness' other books (see above) which combine the contemporary with fantasy elements but this shit didn't make ANY sense to me. it was like two completely separate and unrelated stories??? i kept expecting they'd converge and it would all make sense but it just never did? and i guess the two stories were okay on their own but. idk man it was weird
5. woman, eating by claire kohda - this was one of the books i used in my dissertation and okay. guys don't tell anyone but i definitely did not finish this before i wrote about it. like, i wasn't even halfway done lmao. BUT i did finally finish it afterwards and i liked it a lot! it was kind of an interesting new take on the vampire, and it was kind of a literary fiction too? which i liked. sometimes it was a bit on the nose with its metaphors and it could have done more showing and less telling, but i think it was the author's debut too so i can kind of forgive those things. it was a pretty solid three-star read :) i ❤️ vampires
and that's everything! i did a lot of audiobooks again this month because of the aforementioned busyness but hopefully now that it's summer i'm gonna get a ton of reading done :D
