it was before she found the now

well before that part of her

could bear the straightforward

non-squinting gaze of the light…

the light of the present

 

in one blind moment

she allowed those memories

to rest on her

like a weighted blanket

you see, once those thoughts arrived

they arrived

they stuck to her like grits

they lingered

they dominated her convincing her that

there’s nothing she can do about it

she was convinced that it wouldn’t go away

 

she ate less

it didn’t go away

she moved more

it didn’t go away

she began using every distraction possible

yet it was there

when she went to bed

when she woke up

 

love,

there’s a river flowing now; very fast

it’s swift, rough + great

a bit scary

the hunger the desire to grip the past

is biting at you

 

she became still 

the voice of her grandma whispered to her

push off into the middle-- she urged

keep your eyes open

keep your head above the water

return to your true higher self

spit the bitter taste of lies from your soul from your tongue

 

the waters suddenly swept her

to the calm shores of the now

~a river runs through it~
