Holidate is a 2020 romantic comedy directed by John Whitesell and starring Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey.

In March 2019 it was announced 5hat Emma Roberts would take part in this project, directed by John Whitesell, from a screenplay by Tiffany Paulsen. McG and Mary Viola would be the producers, under their production company name Wonderland Sound and Vision, and Netflix would handle distribution. In May of the same year Luke Bracey, Jake Manley, Jessica Capshaw, Andrew Bachelor, Frances Fisher, Manish Dayal and Kristin Chenoweth joined the cast, and in June Alex Moffat joined the cast.

Filming began in May 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The soundtrack was composed by hip hop music producer Dan the Automator.

The film was released worldwide on the Netflix platform on October 28, 2020.

The film on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes received 43% positive reviews, based on 23 reviews, with an average of 4.94/10. On Metacritic it has a score of 41%, based on reviews from five critics.

Stanchi di essere single durante le feste, due sconosciuti decidono di diventare “festamici”.

Recensione

Può sembrare il classico film natalizio, quello di una protagonista che non sopporta le festività natalizie perché, oramai da anni, non riesce a sentire altro che la pressione dei propri famigliari e amici sul fatto che è una donna single, concentrata in tutto e per tutto sul proprio lavoro. Ed è così che la storia inizia, e sembra che già il finale è scontato: cade innamorata del co-protagonista, di cui fin dalle prime scene si può vedere la dualità del punto di vista. Eppure, no. Non è il classico film natalizio. Tanto per cominciare, sono rari, quasi inesistenti, i film natalizi che durano un anno, e praticamente nessuno fa vedere ciò che avviene durante tutto il resto dell’anno, non solo a piccoli sprazzi in qualità di flashback esplicativi a ciò che sta avvenendo. Poi, nonostante ti aspetti in ogni momento che Sloane cada innamorata nelle braccia di Jackson, sembra non accadere mai, perché sono “festamici” e ci sono ‘regole ferree’ da seguire se lo si vuole restare. E, infatti, ciò non accade se non alla fine del film... anche se il discorso di Sloane poteva essere fatto in maniera diversa, troppo canonico per un film così fuori dagli schemi. Infine, ma non per importanza, vi è il lato romantico-sessuale della protagonista: è chiaro che Sloane non vuole fare sesso fin quando non trova la persona giusta per lei, e che sia etero-romantica, ma in tale personaggio vi è anche la rappresentanza dell’asessualità, o, meglio, in quella parte della sfera asessuale per cui il soggetto si domanda come mai la società ti imponga di farlo a prescindere, altrimenti non sei “normale”, non sei “cool”. Sloane si contrappone, su questo punto, alla figura - solo iniziale - di Carly, la quale, invece, è la rappresentanza della ragazza “in”, “cool”, vincitrice di concorsi di bellezza e amante del sesso. Dal lato scenografico e fotografico, non si può dire che il film rimanga impresso. Ma, d’altronte, si tratta di una commedia romantica natalizia: non può pretendere troppo.
