@royal-hair It looks like Sofia has black ribbon rosettes in the back of her updo.

She's channeling Queen Silvia at the Nobels back in 1991.

TIARA ALERT: Princess Sofia of Sweden wore her Emerald Palmette Tiara for the Nobel Prize Ceremony at Stockholm Concert Hall on 10 December 2023.

Late Victorian Opal and Diamond Tiara

"A late Victorian opal and diamond tiara/necklace, consisting of seven knife-edge gold bars graduating from the centre, each set with two round cabochon-cut opals and an old-cut diamond in-between, the bars connected with six diamond-set arches each arch with a diamond-trefoil and a round cabochon-cut opal within, terminating on each side with a small diamond and opal trefoil motif, the diamonds estimated to weigh 2.9 carats in total, all mounted in gold and silver, attached to silver-gilt tiara frame and accompanied by gold chain back section to convert to a necklace, circa 1890, measuring 4 x 14.5cm, gross weight 36.4 grams."

Yeah, the Swedish royals are usually just better at covering up the base of the tiara so we don't notice if the velvet wrapping is the wrong color. There have been a few instances where you can see it clearly. A very blonde Princess Madeleine wearing the Connaught for the first time at Crown Princess Victoria's wedding springs to mind and back when Victoria started wearing the Baden Fringe it still had white velvet because at the time Princess Lilian was it's most frequent wearer.

Also not everyone wraps the base of their tiara. The Dutch and the Belgian royals generally just leave the frame unwrapped then they don't have to worry about matching the wearers hair. Queen Margrethe also didn't have her tiara frames wrapped but she wasn't sharing them anyway. I'm not really a hair person so I don't know how much having the velvet around the frame helps the tiara stay on. Some people clearly find it useful while others don't.

How does the Swedish RF do it then? Because Victoria, Madeleine and their aunts (white hair) have all worn the same tiaras. Do they change the fabric at the base and the BRF just doesn't bother lol?
That question might be better suited for the tiara experts, but for starters, the Swedish ladies are pros at the tiara hair game and usually the base of their tiaras isn't staring at you in the face. There has been a couple times when I noticed Victoria wearing a lighter base or Madeleine in a darker base but usually it matches their hair well (as for the aunts, I haven't been able to find a good picture of their tiara bases.....again impeccable tiara hair) but here's one example of them changing the color of the base:
