Nev, Max, Help!-Nate Jacobs Oneshot
Requested: Yes
Warnings: aggressiveness and rudeness from Nate and a brief panic attack scene
A/N: The reader is gender neutral since the requester did not specify what they wanted and I did not want to disrespect the storyline from the show. Also, it’s a long one.
For once, Amy Winehouse’s low, melancholy voice did nothing to soothe my nerves as I typed what I was looking for in the designated box. “Love is a Losing Game” was definitely not the best song for the mood but I loved her voice so much; it was like a really messed up security blanket for me. My thumbs shook as I kept typing and quickly deleting my words.
Someone to have fun with.
No, that’ll bring every single creep to my profile.
Someone to watch Netflix with.
Ew, no, they won’t want to go anywhere or do anything.
Someone to discuss Maya Angelou with...
This could go one of two ways: attract a sensitive, nice person or the ultimate softboi who was really just an f-boy in a sensible cardigan.
Okay, Y/N, just add to it.
...and have adventures, great conversations, and watch the best movies.
That seemed broad enough and, potentially, weeded out all the weirdos. Patti Stanger would approve of this. I took such a deep breath that I could feel the oxygen in my feet as I pressed the green check mark. An adorable buffering sign appeared before being quickly replaced by a CONGRATULATIONS, Y/N/N, ON COMPLETING YOUR PROFILE.
The air came out of me slowly, like a balloon, and I tried to make myself relax as I swiped through different matches. One person was too short, the other too tall, another had way too many pictures with reptiles in his profile, and one’s bio simply read: DM and you’ll find out.
Serial killer much?
“That’s part of your problem, Y/N,” Jules had chastised me a few day prior.
“What do you mean by ‘part’?” I’d replied.
“Well, for one, you barely leave the house anymore unless I drag you out,” Jules argued.
“I’m busy,” I’d defended.
“Rewatching Breaking Bad for the eighth time does not count as being busy. Plus, you’re so picky.”
“Am not!”
“You said you’d only do DiCaprio in his Great Gatsby days,” Rue had added.
“Did you see him in that suit?”
Jules then shrugged. “All I’m saying is if you aren’t careful, you will end up all alone.”
“That’s not true, Y/N might get cats.”
That conversation had haunted me since and had driven me to making a dating profile after the required Saturday night family dinner. While my parents and brother were downstairs watching a movie, I was holed up in my room, cringing and regretting accepting any chat requests.
Half an hour on the app caused the images of various male genitalia to be burned into my mind. I would need my brain soaked in holy water for it to be erased. I huffed and kept scrolling, vainly hoping and wishing for a decent guy to pop up on my radar.
Maybe Jules and Rue were wrong. Maybe I had all the right in the world to be picky, I thought harshly to myself.
I dropped my phone on my nightstand and flopped against my pillows as Me and Mr. Jones began playing. I sighed and felt myself being lulled into the comforting abyss Amy created.
Ding!
I jumped out and glared at the source of the noise. Another chat request, another picture to ruin my young brain?
“Be positive, Y/N, this might be good,” I stated as I grabbed the phone.
Tyler wants to chat!
I frowned and opened up the app, only to be met with the most sculpted six-pack I had ever seen. My heart began banging against my chest and my thumbs fumbled for a moment to answer the chat request.
Whoosh.
My stomach dropped as I stared at my first chat to Tyler: Shg.ismtle
I’m. Going. To. Die. Alone.
I quickly typed: Please ignore that, I’m so sorry!
Seconds later, my phone dinged.
Tyler: Really? I thought you were trying to send me a secret code and I liked that we were that cool already.
This was not real, this could not be happening. Tyler had to be a bot, that was why he didn’t show his face in his profile. Bots were supposed to have a hard time recognizing and creating faces, right?
But, on the off chance Tyler was real, it would have been rude to leave the conversation so abruptly?
Y/N: Who knows? Maybe it was a secret code and I’m just testing you.
Tyler: Ok, let me guess what it means.
Tyler: Hi?
Y/N: Haha, you really thought I’d use such a simple code as a first message?
Tyler: It’s my bad for underestimating u. I should have known u were smarter since you read Maya Angelou.
Y/N: U a fan?
Tyler: “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
He knows Angelou? He could have Googled a quote though. Still, it’s a good quote to use if he had Googled it.
Y/N: Nice, but, doesn’t get u out of the guessing game.
As Tyler helplessly guessed wrong for several minutes, I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. I used to think online dating was a last resort or a breeding ground for predators. But, maybe there were decent people looking for something (or someone) meaningful after all.
Tyler: I give up, you’re really good.
Y/N: Thx. But, I can tell you what I meant to say.
Tyler: The suspense is srsly kiilling me.
Y/N: I meant 2 say hey.
Tyler: I guessed that!
Y/N: No, u guessed ‘hi’, there’s a difference.
Tyler: C’mon, barely.
For the rest of the night, Tyler and I chatted. He told me that he plays baseball at a school across town and he doesn’t like anyone around there. He liked John Mulaney stand-up, lemon bars, going to the gym, hanging out with his friends, and reading good books. He was an only child and his parents tended to spoil him. I told him about my friends and how I liked being on the swim team at my school as well as the different YouTubers and books I enjoyed. When I finally fell asleep, I dreamed of talking to him.
On Monday, Jules and Rue were hanging out outside the school as other people either headed to class or relaxed on the lawn. I could not stop my feet from bouncing as I walked up to them.
“...and that is why Sailor Mercury is the most underrated character of the whole show,” Jules affrimed.
Rue seemed halfway interested as her head nodded slowly underneath the hood of her burgundy hoodie. “Cool, all I asked was who’s your favorite but, cool.”
Jules rolled her eyes playfully and straightened up when she saw me. “Hey, Y/N, nice shirt.”
“Thanks.” I wore a sky blue tie dye shirt with ripped jeans and white Converse.
Rue leaned forward and squinted at me. “You’re not wearing black, something’s wrong.”
“Nothing’s wrong, she’s obviously been influenced by me!” Jules teased as she wrapped a slim arm around my shoulders.
“Yeah, you can only hang out with this literal rainbow human so long before she starts influencing your outfit choices.”
We started heading inside, which was really just Jules and me dragging Rue into the building.
“But I don’t wanna be here. It’s so stupid that I have to wait six more months before I can legally decide where I spend my time,” Rue muttered.
“It’s fine, you have us!” Jules insisted.
“Yup!” I agreed.
“Hey, Y/N, Rue, Jules!” Cassie greeted as she sidled up next to me.
We all greeted her.
“Have a good weekend?” Rue asked.
“Yeah, there was this great party that Nick Davis threw. I swear, everyone there was on acid.” Cassie stopped herself and bit her bottom lip. “Sorry---”
Rue shook her head. “It’s fine.”
“How were yours?” Cassie asked as we continued to our lockers.
“Fine,” Jules said.
Rue shrugged in response.
I opened my mouth to reply when my phone beeped and I wrestled it out of my pocket.
Tyler: Is it 2 late 4 a good morning text?
I smiled.
“You’re so cheesy,” I muttered under my breath.
“Who’s that?” Cassie asked, peeking over my shoulder.
I jumped and cradled my phone to my chest like it was my child. “No one.”
Jules pulled open her locker and cocked a bleached eyebrow. “‘No one’ does not cause huge smiles like that!” She jabbed a sparkly-manicured finger at me.
“Yeah, show us,” Rue said. “We are your friends.”
“It’s nothing,” I insisted as I weaved around them.
I pushed myself against my locker and managed to open it with my free hand. Rue was on one side of me and Cassie was on the other.
“Is it a boy?” Cassie sang.
“Or a girl?” Rue questioned.
“It’s none of your business,” I gritted out as I grabbed my necessary books.
As I shuffled the books in my arms, Jules came from behind and slipped my phone away from me. I gasped, whirled around, and watched as Rue tried to look at the phone while Cassie playfully blocked me.
“Guys, this is not cool! This is such a serious invasion of privacy,” I argued as I tried to move around Cassie.
“We’re besties, there’s no such thing as privacy!” Jules retorted.
“Wow, Y/N, these are so----” Jules cut Rue off.
“Adorable!” Jules squealed and turned to face me.
Cassie took the opportunity to glance at my phone and she smiled. “Aw, this Tyler guy sounds so sweet.”
I snatched my phone from Jules. “Well, now you know. Can we please go to class now?”
As the other girls grabbed their things from their lockers, I got out my phone to reply to Tyler.
Y/N: It’s never too late...until noon technically.
Somehow, I started wandering away from the girls until I ran into someone. I tried to jump away, but they grabbed me by the forearms.
“I am so sorry, I should have looked where I was going---” I stopped speaking when I recognized Nate’s direct gaze on me. I was pretty tall but I always felt like he could throw me into the lockers if he wanted to.
“Watch it, Y/N,” he muttered.
“Nate, let go of them,” Maddy chided, her hand resting against one of his arms.
She seemed to have the magic touch because he relaxed and I joined my friends. As the couple continued down the hallway, I couldn’t help but admire them. In a very messed up way, they worked. Kat had told me only a little about what Nate would do whenever Maddy upset him and I felt so bad for her, angry at him, and then conflicted. Nate just had to have that stereotypical amazing all-American look.
“You okay, Y/N?” Cassie asked.
“Yeah, is it weird that I can still feel his eyes on me even when he’s not looking?” I asked.
“No, his need for dominance permeates everyone’s sense of autonomy,” Rue assured.
“Nice,” Jules said.
“And scary accurate,” Cassie added.
Jule looped her arm with mine and steered us in the direction of our first classes. “Anyway, if he tries anything, I’m sure Tyler would gladly kick his butt for you.”
Throughout the day, Tyler and I chatted and I even had to get creative with responding. In English, I kept my head down during quiet reading time and made sure my phone was positioned just right in my lap. During geometry, I told Mrs. Packer that I was having some digestive issues and spent most of the class outside the bathroom, texting Tyler. At lunch, I could barely focus on my friends’ conversation.
“Hello, Earth to Y/N?” Lexi waved her hand in front of my face and I blinked.
“Sorry, I was----”
“Texting her boooyfriiiend,” Jules sang.
“He’s not my boyfriend, we’re just talking.” I started poking at my sandwich. “What did I miss?”
“Oh, nothing, just the fact that I nearly blew up the school during chem,” Cassie said.
“Magnesium chloride isn’t an explosive,” Lexi argued.
“Well, the tube overflowed and everyone was freaking out,” Cassie argued.
“Yeah, because magnesium chloride can have bad side effects,” Lexi continued.
“I wonder what would happen if the school exploded and we weren’t all here? Would they have to give us our diplomas?” I thought outloud.
“Ooh, and I could go to fashion school early!” Jules cheered.
“I’d be happy not coming here anymore,” Rue admitted.
It was quiet for a moment as we all ate but that quiet was broken when Maddy yelled.
“WHO ARE YOU TEXTING?”
I couldn’t help myself but look. Maddy was standing behind Nate, who was sitting with his teammates at the center table. Bebe and Kat flanked Maddy a little behind. Everyone stared at them. Nate’s jaw tightened.
“Maddy, calm down,” his relaxed, controlled voice nearly echoed in the silent cafeteria.
“DON’T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN! YOU’VE BEEN ON YOUR PHONE ALL DAY!” she snapped.
“Maddy---”
“ARE YOU TEXTING OTHER GIRLS?” Maddy shouted.
“Can we talk about this somewhere else?” Nate asked.
Maddy sighed. “Are you gonna let me see your phone?”
“Maddy, we need to talk.”
“Don’t talk to me again.”
Before Nate could respond, Maddy dumped the contents of her lunch tray over his head and threw the tray aside. Kat and Bebe followed her as she strutted out of the cafeteria amid the shocked gasps.
“I’m gonna go check on her,” Cassie whispered.
We all nodded and she quietly exited the room. As I stared at Nate, the supposed king of the school, drenched in soggy salad and fat-free milk, I wondered why he could never stay broken up with Maddy. Their relationship was not just toxic, it was volatile. Their breakups were always public and outrageous, but they always ended up back together. No one questioned it either. I never understood why people could continue to choose relationship they knew was bad over pursuing something new. I told Tyler as much that night.
Y/N: It’s like those dogs that get killed by electric fences because they keep walking into them.
Tyler: U have a good point, but, that couple’s relationship is more complicated than u think.
Y/N: Probably, but, it doesn’t look that way. They hurt each other a lot.
Tyler: How do u know?
Y/N: Bc I’ve seen it. I don’t mean 2 b judgy, but, I could never be in a relationship like that.
Tyler: Well, I don’t think anyone would b if they knew it would b bad.
Y/N: Good point. But, why would they get back together so much?
Tyler: Idk them, but, it could b bc it’s familiar and it’s what they know.
Y/N: Still, it’s messed up.
Tyler: Yeah, but I don’t wanna talk abt them anymore.
Y/N: K, what do u wanna talk abt?
A few seconds later, Tyler sent me a picture so graphically beautiful that I was convinced I passed out.
The next day, I showed Rue and Jules the picture during break time.
“Holy crap!” Jules took my phone and leaned into it for closer inspection.
“Tyler is packing,” Rue agreed.
Jules slid my phone back to me. “You haven’t replied to him?” “No, and he hasn’t talked to me at all today.”
“He’s probably expecting a reply that’s similar to what he sent,” Rue said.
My face warmed up. “I can’t send him nudes,” I hissed.
“Why not? It’s like the greeting cards of our generation,” Jules stated.
“Really? You’d send your grandparents a greeting card of your naked body?” I replied sarcastically.
“Relax, if you’re uncomfortable, we can help you,” Jules assured.
“We can?” Rue asked.
“We can.” Jules gave her a look and Rue relaxed.
“It’s still weird, but, I guess you guys can come over after school.”
“Sweet! Your mom still bakes cookies for you after school, right?” Jules asked.
I nodded.
“She might stop once she learns her darling favorite older child is sending nudes,” Rue snorted as she spoke.
I recoiled in my seat, taking a second to bask in the sun’s warmth. “Don’t remind me.”
After swim practice, once my teammates left the locker room, I eyed my naked form in the mirror. I had nothing to be ashamed of, really, thanks to all the swimming, but, I just felt weird being naked in front of people. There was something so vulnerable about it, like, being on display in a museum or lying on a cold surgery table. But, online dating was supposed to get me out of my comfort zone and I’d found someone who’d made me feel comfortable enough to do it. With this resolve, I changed into a hoodie and some sweatpants and left the school. It was dusk and I typically walked home after practice since it wasn’t far. Plus, I’d told Jules and Rue to just go to my house after school.
The late breeze rippled past me and I dug my hands into my pants’ pockets as I started walking towards the parking lot. There was barely anyone around, except stoners hotboxing their cars, some couples making out, and dance team members and football players getting out of practice.
I kept my head down as I maneuvered around the few cars and people around. It felt like someone could spot what I was about to do once I got home and it was nervewracking. All I had to do was get home, let Jules make me look even better, take these pictures, and never thinking of it again.
“Something on your mind, Y/N?” Nate called.
I froze and snapped my head up to look at him. He was leaning against his truck, looking like a model for Ford in only a tshirt and jeans. Ford should hire him.
“No, not really,” I said.
I started to side step the truck, eyeing the sidewalk that was only a few yards away as though it was a lifeline.
“Get in,” Nate ordered.
I paused and looked at him. “Excuse me?”
“I see you walking home all the time, let me do you a favor, one athlete to another.” Nate was about halfway in the driver’s seat of the car and all I could do was stare.
“We’ve...never really talked before,” I stated.
“We can talk during the drive.”
I stepped back and my eyes flittered around, like the best decision would hit me in the face. Then, I saw Maddy across the lot. She was standing with a couple of dance team girls, including Cassie. She stared me down as though daring me to do it. I glanced from her to Nate, who started the engine loudly.
I quickly climbed into the passenger’s seat and stared into Maddy’s reflection in the rearview mirror as he pulled out of the parking lot.
“How do you know where I live?” I asked.
“You forgot that I gave you a ride before?” Nate asked.
“When?”
“After Cassie’s sweet sixteen. You blacked out, your friends were panicking, and I offered to take you home. For some reason, you remembered your address,” Nate recalled.
“Oh, thanks?”
“Sure.”
We pulled up to my house a few minutes later, Lil Wayne bragging about his conquests filling the quiet. I hopped out of the truck and grabbed my bag.
“Thanks for the ride, this one, I mean, I owe you,” I said.
“Yeah, see you around, Y/N.”
I closed the door and headed inside.
“I’m home!” I called.
My mom poked her head out from the kitchen. “Y/N, how was school and practice?”
“Fine.”
“Was that Nate Jacobs outside?”
I hesitated.
How did she know what Nate’s truck looked like? “Yeah, he gave me a ride today.”
“Aw, isn’t that sweet? Rue and Jules are waiting for you in your room. They took the cookies with them.”
I nodded and went to my room. As soon as I walked in, they bombarded me with questions.
“Why did Nate give you a ride?” Rue asked.
“What did you guys talk about?” Jules inquired.
“Don’t you hate him?”
“He’s kind of a dick, but, unfortunately, super good looking.”
“Did Maddy see?”
“Do you think she’s gonna kill you?”
“Guys, I don’t know but I do know that if you do not take amazing pictures of me with no clothes on soon, I will delete my entire profile,” I interrupted.
They both nodded.
“But, we will ask for details later,” Jules insisted.
“Okay, but, please give me a cookie, I’ll need it to get through this.”
Rue extended the plate towards me and I bit into the melty goodness as Jules began doing my makeup. It was simple, only bringing out my best features. I made them both turn around as I undressed. Once I had, Jules encouraged me.
“You look amazing, I would be shocked if he didn’t jizz in his pants,” Jules said.
“Lower your voice, Y/B/N can only play Five Nights at Freddy’s so loud,” I hissed.
Jules held her hands up and Rue direct me to lay on the bed, my phone held up in front of her.
“Okay, look sexy,” Rue said.
I tried to smolder, but, by their expressions, I did not achieve it.
“No, like, pout your lips, like, you just heard that TheOdd1sOut is not uploading for a month,” Jules directed.
“And give the camera bedroom eyes, you know, as though it’s Tyler.”
“Okay.” After a few pictures, I slowly got the hang of it and even started posing a little naturally.
“Oh my gosh, Tyra is shook!” Jules cheered.
“Yeah, these are pretty good if I do say so myself.” Rue handed me my phone and I flipped through the pictures.
She was a talented photogrpaher and I joked that maybe she should go professional.
“Yeah, I’m sure I’d have a nice clientele.”
I laughed as I changed back into my hoodie and sweatpants. “Okay, help me pick one to send.”
Jules took my phone and she and Rue began scrolling.
“No, the lighting’s off in this one,” Jules muttered.
“No, it’s never off in any of these,” Rue argued.
“I’m not shading your talent, I’m just trying to find the best thing for Y/N to send Tyler.”
After a little more bickering, we all agreed on the picture and I sent it to Tyler.
“Should I follow it up with something?” I asked.
“Maybe say ‘Wrong person’? Guys want what other guys want,” Jules suggested.
“Or say ‘Sorry for the late reply’,” Rue added.
“I’ll go with Rue’s, sorry, Jules.”
Jules shrugged.
I sent everything off and my friends and I watched as Tyler typed a response.
Tyler: It was worth the wait ;).
We squealed so loud that my mom yelled for us to keep it down. We apologized as we descended into a fit of giggles. Through it all, I could not help but feel so bouncy and light all over. Was I...falling for this total stranger?
“What do you think he looks like?” Jules asked during lunch later that week.
I shrugged. “It’s different every day, if that makes sense.”
“I guess that’s the nice thing about interacting with someone who doesn’t show their face,” Jules thought outloud.
“How do you see him now?” Lexi asked.
I sighed. “Right now, I think he’s tall, six feet at least. He’s got a mix of blonde and brown hair like a surfer because it’s lightened from all the time he’s spent in the sun. He has green eyes, freckles, and he dresses well.”
“Sounds amazing,” Jules said as she rest her chin in her hand.
Rue nodded slowly. “You’re not nervous or anything?”
“No, this is so cheesy, but, I feel like I know him, you know? He’s so easy to talk to and has so much to say.”
“Y/N’s blushing,” Jules teased. “Do you love him?”
“I really, really, really, like him.”
“Do you think you’ll meet soon?” Lexi asked.
I shrugged. “I don’t know, neither of us has brought it up.”
“Well, it just matters that you’re comfortable, okay?” Rue said.
“Okay.”
If I was honest, I did not know if I wanted to meet Tyler. I knew that I liked him more than I liked anyone before, but, there was something strange about breaking this wall the internet provided us. It was freer to talk on the internet than it was in person. What if I said something stupid in front of him? What if he thought that I looked different in person? What if he looked different in person?
I managed to keep these thoughts at bay for the rest of the day until I got home. Post-dinner had been officially declared Talk to Tyler Time. None of my family knew what I was doing besides blasting Amy Winehouse in my room for about an hour. My laugh nearly overpowered her high note in “Best Friends, Right?”. I had to blink away my happy tears as I replied to him.
Y/N: That did not happen! Tyler: Yes it did! Do u want 2 c the scar????
Y/N: No, I think I’m good.
I wiped away my tears and settled under the covers. I wondered if his friends would agree that Tyler gets into some weird situations as well. Just as I started typing, Tyler beat me.
Tyler: I want 2 meet u.
The speed that I launched my phone away from me almost shocked me more than the text.
Almost.
My heartbeat thrummed in my ears. This was it, I knew I couldn’t avoid him much longer, but, I felt like I couldn’t move. All I could do was stare at my phone like it was the most offensive object in the world. Slowly, I regained mobility and grabbed my phone. I took a deep breath.
“Take a chance, Y/L/N,” I whispered.
Y/N: When and where?
“You’re meeting him tonight?” Jules squealed the next day.
I hushed her as people in the hallway paused to look at us. “Not so loud.” “But this is so exciting. Please let me help you decide what to wear,” Jules pleaded with a pout.
“Sure,” I said.
Jules hugged me. “This is going to be so fun. I won’t go crazy with glitter since this is the first time you’re meeting this guy.”
“Thanks?”
“Do your parents know?” Rue asked.
“No,” I replied as I slowly pulled away from Jules. “They’re coming Senior Night tonight, though. and I’m going to meet him at Mercy Park an hour before it ends.”
“Are you sure you even want to do this? I know that Jules and I tease you about your love life, but, this is risky,” Rue said.
“You weren’t saying that when you were helping me with those pictures the other day,” I shot back.
“That was different. You’re...you’re actually meeting him now and he could be a psychopath or a sociopath or, just, a creepy old guy who likes to look at teenagers!” Rue insisted.
“Rue, relax, everything’s going to be fine.”
“You don’t know that!” She turned on her heel and hurried into the bathroom with Jules and I on her tail.
When we entered, Rue was leaning against the wall, panting and staring up at the ceiling. Jules and I approached her slowly as the girls who were in the bathroom quickly filed out.
“Rue, slow down your breathing,” I said slowly.
“I...I can’t. You-you could get hurt or something and-and I would know about it an-and I-I couldn’t live with that!” Tears burst from her eyes as Rue began pacing and Jules and I were close but gave her room.
“Rue, Y/N is going to be okay, we both know what time she’ll be at the park. If anything happens, we’ll know the area she could be in,” Jules assured her.
Rue shook her head and stopped in her tracks. Then, she looked between us helplessly before bowing her head and sobbing. Jules and I carefully hugged her and let her cry.
“I’m sorry that I’m scared and I care about you and I don’t want you to get hurt,” Rue mumbled into my shirt.
“It’s okay, I appreciate it. I really want to meet Tyler, though, and, I promise I will let you know if something happens, okay?”
Rue nodded and sniffled.
It took Jules about an hour to make me look amazing. I had no idea my hair could be so fluffy and put together until she was done with it. She used eyeliner to make eyes look bigger and rounder and added sparkly lip gloss to make my lips look plumper. After she contoured and highlighted the best places she deemed that her work was done. My outfit, a fitted forest green long-sleeve shirt and fitted black pants with Jadons, was also approved by her.
“Tell me everything later!” she insisted.
Rue couldn’t join us since she had “prior commitments” but I texted her that I would let her know when I head to the park and when I leave. My nerves didn’t let me focus on the soccer game my parents insisted I joined them and my brother at. I couldn’t care less that the forward on one team got a yellow card or that the goalie on the other team made illegal blocks. I was practically buzzing with excitement and fear so much that I had to give my pretzel to Y/B/N. Finally, the third quarter arrived and I told my parents that I would meet them at home since I’d promised Lexi that I would help her with some homework.
Lexi wouldn’t mind being used for a lie this one time; it was an emergency.
I tried to practice some calming deep breaths as I walked over to the park. The dark night sky provided a little bit of comfort to my walk. I wondered how different Tyler would look from the picture in my mind. I wondered if he thought I would look any different. Maybe (hopefully) it wouldn’t matter to either of us.
Finally, I reached the park. It was empty, save for the oak trees scattered throughout the lush green scenery that seemed mysterious under the mooonlight. A few benches and wooden tables were around as well, but, Tyler and I had agreed to meet at the fountain which was further in the park. The breathing exercises had to have helped because I felt much more relaxed and I hoped that everything would go all right.
When I got to the fountain, there was a tall person facing it. All I could make out were dark clothes and broad shoulders. I took another deep breath and kept walking.
“This is a nice spot, you have good taste,” I commented.
“I could say the same for you.” I stopped in my tracks as Nate slowly turned to face me. His face was unreadable but his eyes stayed on me.
“What? Wh-where’s Tyler?” I asked, my voice already hoarse.
Nate glanced down at his shoes. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know how else to talk to you.”
I shook my head. “No.” My vision got blurry but I could tell that Nate was looking up at me now.
“Just let me explain,” he requested softly.
He took a step towards me and I took two steps back .
“I don’t wanna hear it. This....this is some sick joke to you or something?”
“No, never, Y/N, just listen to me.”
“I don’t want to!” The tears rolled down my cheeks and I swiped at them so hard that I thought I scratched myself. At least I could feel something because my heart felt numb. “You catfished me!”
“I just wanted to talk to you, I really do like you, Y/N. Tyler and I are the same, just different names,” Nate insisted, coming closer.
For some reason, I didn’t move. I didn’t know if it was from emotional exhaustion or stress, but, I let him approach me. I kept shaking my head.
“No,” I hiccuped.
“I wanted to meet you tonight because I was tired of lying. I want to figure this, us, out,” Nate said.
I sniffed. “Us?”
At that moment, I could actually see his face and Nate seemed so hopeful. There was a slight smile on his lips and his eyes seemed light for once. Maybe he wanted there to be an “us”. Maybe, despite all logic, he wanted to talk to me seriously and could not do it offline because of his reputation. Maybe, he was over the on-again-off-again situation with Maddy. Maybe, this was my chance, our chance.
I wiped my face again, mentally cringing at how upset Jules would be for my ruining her masterpiece.
“Yeah, us.” Nate stepped closer to me, gently wrapped his arms around my waist, and pulled me into his chest.
Gradually, my muscles relaxed and I relished in the feeling of his strong upper body and his warmth. Then, I began to feel pressure on my waist and gasped as it intensified.
“Nate, you’re...squeezing...too hard,” I rasped out.
And he started laughing, no, cackling. As he laughed, his grip tightened and I continued gasping and clawing at everything I could.
“Nate...stop!”
But he kept laughing and squeezing. When he finally released me, I looked up and saw nothing behind his eyes. Everything in me told me to run, but, I knew he could have easily caught up to me.
“I really thought you were smarter than that, Y/N. C’mon, you couldn’t honestly think that I would do all this to be with you,” he sneered.
“So why do it then?” I asked, my voice so small that I could have kicked myself for it.
Nate sighed and folded his arms. “Because you made it so easy and, to ask for a favor.”
“What? That makes no sense,” I argued. “I told you I owed you one that day you gave me a ride!”
“Yeah, well, I needed to make sure that you were available when I needed you.”
“Whatever, screw you,” I hissed as I pivoted on my heel.
“Too late for you, you’re already screwed.” Nate pulled out a folder from inside his jacket pocket. “Remember those special pictures you sent to Tyler? Well, they count as distribution of child pornography, which has a hefty fine and sentence.”
My mouth opened and closed several times before I faced him and responded. “But...but you held them, doesn’t that count towards possession? And, you’re extorting me!”
Nate glowered at me and stormed over. “Heresay, no solid evidence for your case. Plus, I’m a Jacobs, so, who are you kidding?”
I felt so sick to my stomach that I could have thrown up, fainted, or cried at that moment. This was not real, this could not be real.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“Like I said, just be available when I need you.”
“Fine.”
“Sorry, what was that?” He gripped my chin his hand and forced me to look up at him.
“Okay,” I said softly.
“Hmm.” His eyes scanned my face before he released me. “And if I ever hear you judging my relationship with Maddy again, these pictures are going to be the least of your concern.”
I nodded weakly, regretting every single thing I ever told him. Nate Jacobs was truly the devil. He wandered off into the night like a centurion leaving a victorious battle. It seemed like he always won.
I managed not to start crying until I was on the empty sidewalk. No, I sobbed so bad that my throat went dry.
How could I have been so stupid? I should have known it was him that day Maddy yelled at him for texting all day.
Stupid, stupid, stupid!
My sobs continued as I grabbed my phone and texted Rue.
Y/N: U were right.

Perfection Imperfections | Chapter 1
Chapter Index
»»—————————————-
Finally, summer break. It’s been a while since I was able to go home. Having to attend high school rather far from my home in Seoul, I never thought that I’d adjust to the new environment. Fortunately, I wasn’t entirely alone, since I stayed with my aunt for the four years of my high school life. School wasn’t so bad, but the homesickness is what killed it for me. Even though it was my parents' idea to send me a rather vast distance—me not being too excited about it, but I knew I wouldn’t get my way in the end—there was some good that came from it. The two only good things, actually.
I glance outside the train window, the buildings of Busan zooming past me. Sure, it may not be my home, but I won’t lie. I’m really going to miss this place. My phone suddenly vibrates in my lap, glancing down to see a text from my group chat, smiling as I respond.

Read 4:02 PM
I snort, turning off my phone and placing it back down on my lap as I go back to staring outside my left-hand window again. Meet Cha Eunwoo and Moon Bin, my two best friends. The only reason I got through high school how I did without major setbacks. Sure, there was the occasional homesickness and all, but had I not met these two, I probably wouldn’t have even attended and graduated.
Being so far away from the place I grew up never really suited me, and they saw it right away from day one how lonely and upset I looked. I didn't seem to fit in, especially since I skipped a grade and was placed in classes that were very advanced for me. Not that I minded the vigor, but it was hard for me to socialize, let alone make friends.
That’s when I met them. Freshman year in homeroom before my first literature class. Moon Bin, a boy with parted, coppery-golden hair accompanied by his shy, puppy-eye smile and sweet nature, offered me an empty seat next to him in class, even going as far as to share his textbook and asking how I found the school. No doubt, I was embarrassed and immensely shy, stuttering over my words and failing to meet his soft gaze. However, he didn’t make fun of me nor find me odd. All he did was smile, laughing lightly at my slightly flustered state. He stuck his hand out, introducing himself (most people just call him Moonbin or Bin) with that smile of his, thus the start of our new friendship. Since then, he became someone who always knew how to cheer me up when I was feeling down. No moment was ever dull with him by my side.
Eunwoo, the tall, brooding black-haired and charismatic student almost everyone knew (and crushed on) of, was usually with Moonbin when we hung out together, but he normally kept to himself. Though quiet and sometimes reserved with his intimidating looks, it didn’t take long for him to break the ice with us, the three of us becoming close friends. Promising to stay like this until we went to college and beyond. Regardless if we all diverge and tread different paths, we would always converge and come back to one another.
Four years flew by and graduation was upon us. Just like that, the two became like family to me, my ride-or-die duo. The two who were able to turn my world upside down, finding solace in a time where I thought it was nearly impossible for me to.
My thoughts are interrupted by my “Move” ringtone—yes, I’m a huge Lee Taemin fan—looking down at my phone again to see it’s my brother calling. I sigh, picking up the call.
“What?”
He gasps dramatically. “Is that any way to address your loving older brother after being away for so long?”
I snort, shaking my head. “Loving my ass, oppa. How are mom and dad?”
“They’re fine, living. Didn’t you tell them you’re coming home?”
“Nope, I don’t even text them that often. You already know this..”
He sighs. “Yeah, I figured.”
There’s a slight pause on his end, but he continues. “You took the three-thirty train, right? So you’ll be here around five or so?”
“Yeah, give or take.”
I look out the window again to see the endless stretch of greenery and flowing springs, sometimes even children playing in the fields. I grin mischievously, deciding to poke fun at my brother when he doesn’t respond right away.
“What, you miss me?”
He makes a sound similar to throwing up. “As if. I got so used to the peace and quiet. I’m not ready for it to go away.”
“Yah!” I realize that I had yelled a bit too loudly and eyes were now trained on me, and I bow my head in apology. I lower my voice, “You’re such an asshole.”
“Oh, I know, but you still love me anyway.”
“Shut up.”
I can hear his laugh resonate through the phone and a smile unknowingly tugs at my lips. I wouldn’t say it out loud, but it’s true. When I lived with my aunt in Busan for the duration of high school, I missed Jaehyun a lot. Though two years older than me, he didn’t seem to alienate me the way my parents do. While I hate the notion that they spoil Jaehyun endlessly and let him do as he wishes, I won’t lie and say that he was a prick about it. He could’ve been, but he never came off as selfish. I’m really close with my brother, shocking as it may be. Sibling relationships are like that—one minute you want to strangle them with their intestines and the next you’re singing duets together. Crazy, but that’s how it is for us. My parents don’t really pay me any attention, so Jaehyun decides to do that instead. Not complaining though. I’d rather take his pranking and teasing over my parents’ demands and reprimands any day.
“Aight, I’m heading out for a bit. Text me when you arrive.”
I smile again. “Will do, but make sure to get me food!”
“Let me think…” He hums, and I can practically sense the smirk on his end. “Nope. Get your own.”
“Oppa!”
Jaehyun laughs. “See you in a bit, Hyuna. Get here safely. Bye!”
He hangs up the call before I get a chance to retort, and I scoff. Typical of my brother. He knows how much I enjoy street food, and every time he goes out, it’s almost certain that most of the time he stops somewhere to eat. Did he ever bring food back? Sure, but by the time I’d get to it, most of it was gone anyways. That only lasted a little while before I had gone upstate anyways, so he had more food for himself, I guess.
As the train barrels down the tracks, I feel my heart racing in excitement, but there’s also a slight ounce of dread. I really don’t know why. I want to believe it’s because I’ve been away for too long, but part of me knows it’s the fact that I’ll have to face my parents again. Knowing that I only have two months to decide where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do, I know the bitter truth is that those decisions won’t be left up to me. Last time, I was sent to Busan.
God knows where I’d be sent to now.
***
“Final destination of the KTX Busan-Seoul train at Seoul Station is approaching and will arrive at 05:30 PM. The doors to alight are on the right hand side. All passengers are requested to dismount the train upon arrival. Thank you.”
That’s my stop.
Gathering my bag and hand luggage, I patiently wait for the train to pull up at the station. Seeing the familiar shops and buildings around me makes my legs bounce up and down in both excitement and anticipation.
Four long years away from Seoul...
Before getting off, I quickly text the group chat and then my brother, letting them all know that I’ve reached safely. Side-stepping the other passengers exiting the subway doors, I carefully land onto the platform with my luggage in tow. I breathe in the air around as I stretch my arms up into the sky, the grin widening on my face.
It sure as hell feels good to be back home.
I try my best to maneuver through the crowds, but it doesn’t stop the rush of people knocking into me. At times like these, I curse my genetics for favoring my older brother instead of me in terms of height. Eventually, I come to a clearing and when my eyes glance upwards, I spot a rather familiar dark brown-haired six-foot-tall male amongst the small crowd waving me over.
“Hyuna, over here!”
I gasp, my eyes widening. “Oppa!”
He smiles as I begin walking towards him, my feet hurriedly moving across the concrete. The distance between us shortens and I abandon my luggage as he opens his arms wide.
Only for me to sucker punch him in the stomach.
He yelps in pain, grimacing as he holds his abdomen. “Shit, that hurt. What has Aunt Sua been feeding you up there? Rocks?”
I smack his shoulder, my blood slightly boiling in anger. “Yah, why didn’t you tell me you were coming?! Do you know how much money I blew off for the bus fare?”
He straightens his back before going to rub his shoulder, then behind his neck.
“Fine, fine. My bad. I wanted to surprise you, but I guess that didn’t work, did it?”
I cross my arms over my chest, huffing in annoyance. He sighs, nodding.
“Okay, okay, I’ll compensate you. Dinner’s on me.”
At this I grin, blinking excitedly. I grab onto his arm and shake it vigorously. “Really? You mean it? You’re the best, oppa!”
“Look at this brat..” he taunts, shaking his head. In a flash, he headlocks me and rubs the top of my head harshly with his knuckles, upsetting the neatly-tied auburn ponytail.
“Yah! Quit it!” I smack his arms and flail in protest, but he chuckles, saying this is what I get for cunningly finding a way to exploit him the minute I stepped back into Seoul.
What can I say? It’s a talent.
He lets go eventually, and I try to smooth down my already-tangled hair. I grumble incoherently but Jaehyun pulls me into his embrace, wrapping his arms around me. His free hand gently pats the side of my head in comfort.
“Welcome home, sis.”
I stand there stiff for a second before hugging back. He squeezes me tighter and I find myself smiling into his shoulder.
“Good to be back,” I whisper.
We stand like that for a moment before he pats my back a couple of times, us pulling away from each other soon after. He reaches behind me to grab my hand luggage as he shoulders my bag. I tell him that I can carry them just fine, but he starts walking away from the platform to the parking lot. I call out after him as I run to catch up, and I can see the corners of his mouth twitch. Jaehyun leads me to his car, a sleek matte-silver convertible Mustang. My mouth drops open in shock at its stunning beauty, my body forcing itself to remain composed for the sake of avoiding public self-embarrassment.
He throws my luggage in the back seat before he turns to me, smirking at my expression. “You like it?”
“Shit, do I like it? I love it!” I run my fingers over its metallic surface, the silver exterior gleaming in the evening glow. Grinning, I stare up at my brother who catches my gaze as I stand next to the driver’s seat, my fingers already curled on the handle.
“Can I—”
“No.”
“Please—”
“Nope.”
I pout as I pull my hand away and step to the side. Jaehyun chuckles, rubbing my head playfully before getting into the driver’s seat and starting the car. The engine purrs to life as my brother pulls out his shades and wears them. He looks at me and cocks his head to the passenger seat.
“Don’t just stand there. Get in.”
Smiling, I quickly make my way over to the other side and slip into the passenger seat. I barely have time to buckle in before Jaehyun speeds off. I scream in fright, but he laughs heartily, telling me to let loose.
With the wind harshly whipping around us, I close my eyes and tilt my head upwards, absorbing the remnants of my childhood in a place I’ll always call home. A place where my heart always feels at ease.
My name is Jung Hyuna. I’m eighteen years old, and this is my story.

Write more Jason Todd and write me them dang Roy Harper ones plz and thx ❤️
Headcanons about being friends with Jason Todd and Roy Harper (Arsenal)~
You grew up in Gotham, of course you’d heard all about Batman and his band of sidekicks, Nightwing and Red Hood and Red Robin and Robin. But you’d never really paid it much mind because you had your own life to live and you were pretty sure you didn’t know any of them. But there’d been a series of bank heists in Gotham, and you ended up one of many hostages during the last one
You were sitting with the other hostages when some moron in red and black busts in, guns blazing
Yeah he took down the bad guys, but he also got shot for his efforts
You were the first to get up and try to put pressure on his wounds, yelling for help
He shrugged you off, and before you could talk sense into him he was out and the cops came rushing in, asking you questions, and it’s only then that you realize that that had been the infamous Red Hood
Days later, you were walking home when he approached you again
“Why did you do that?” “You’d been shot saving all of us, I wanted to help” “I didn’t need your help-” “Everyone needs help sometimes”
You’re annoyed, but you tell him “Thanks anyways, Red Hood”
He just stares at you for a long time before pulling off the Hood, looking at you with a smirk
“Call me Jason” “…..Y/N”
Eventually spending time with Jason leads to hanging out with him and his best friend, Roy.
“This is my other best friend Y/N, she’s cool I swear”
You both stare at each other. Eventually Roy just shrugs
“If Jason likes you that’s good enough for me”
It takes a while to warm up to each other, he’s slow to trust after all and honestly you think he’s a bit of an asshole
But eventually, after learning to tolerate each other so you could both spend time with your mutual friend Jason, you start to grow on each other
And instead of “just an asshole” he’s now your asshole
And somehow you’ve become joined at the hip with these lunatics
Gear up buttercup, because while you can learn to deal with one or the other of these two, when they’re together they just egg each other on and go to insane levels because they have no chill. E v e r y t h i n g becomes a competition or a bet of some kind between these two, and you will be dragged into every single disagreement and made to pick a side.
“Y/N, help us settle a debate, who’s prettier, me or Roy?” “You’re both really attractive-” “NO THAT’S A COPOUT ANSWER, WHO’S BETTER-LOOKING?!”
“Y/N you love me more than Jason don’t you?” “You’re both my best friends-” “Yeah but who’s your favorite?”
“Hey which of us is a better shot? Me, right?”
“Hey, $100 says I can jump off this roof and stick the landing” “Jason no-” “Oh you’re on, when you break your legs you owe me $100″ “RoY NO-”
Whoever’s side you end up taking, they’re always over the top
“Fine, Y/N, I see how it is” “Jason please-” “I’ll never forget this betrayal”
These boys are trashy attention whores. Both of them will flirt with you constantly, but you give as good as you get and take great pride in the instances you’ve been able to render them red-faced and flustered when you flirted back. But the instant you actually try to date someone, out come the guns and arrows and there goes any chance you had with the guy who [mistakenly] thought he was good enough for you. They just want your attention all the time.
They eventually invite you to join them when they cuddle on the couch, and you get squished between them and they bicker the whole time but you’ve never felt so safe and cozy
They show up at your window in the middle of the night after a particularly rough patrol
Jason wants a hug and somewhere quiet to be where you won’t ask if he’s okay or what happened
Roy wants to get takeout and watch crap t.v. and bicker about trivial things that don’t really matter
Both of them are quiet, and feel kind of bad about waking you up, so they start to bring apology presents: your favorite food, a new stuffed animal, your favorite movie that they rented
You don’t really mind because they’re your best friends, of course you’ll be here for them when they need you
You accept the gifts anyways, though, because you’re not one to look a gift horse in the mouth
They come up with all kinds of nicknames and pet names for you, some teasing, some condescending, but some just genuinely affectionate names and for every insult they have for you, you have at least 3 for them so you’d call it even
These boys are absolute garbage about self-care, so sometimes you have to take over for them.
Roy forgets to eat, or drink, or shave for days at a time
Jason forgets to shower or brush his hair, and drinks to chase away nightmares and leaves the bottles scattered all over, along with cigarette butts
They both hate doing laundry, so they stay in their pajamas as long as they can get away with
Until you barge in and start lecturing them, shoving Jason into the bathroom and snapping at him to shower
Cooking a meal for Roy and giving him a glass of water and telling him to sip it slowly
They’ll grumble and bitch at you the whole time, but secretly appreciate the effort
And on the days you don’t answer your phone because you’re tired and don’t feel good, they pick the lock on your door and surround you with blankets and watch movies
And they don’t say a word about how bad it may be, or ask questions you don’t want to answer
Just offer comfort and solidarity, and help you get back on your feet and feeling like yourself
You’ll never have to worry about money again. Through less-than-legal means both of these kids have a looooooot of money, and what’s theirs is yours. You tell them you don’t want free handouts or to take advantage of them, you’re not some charity and they shouldn’t take care of you because they feel bad for you. But they just look at you like the biggest idiot on the planet, and tell you “Well dumbass, how about we do it anyways because that’s what friends do?”
Always a safe place to stay the night in one of their many safehouses
Sometimes they try to bribe you to take their side in a squabble
“Man that was crazy, you okay Y/N? How about I pay for an Uber to take you home”
More often than not they treat you to dinner, or ice cream, because they just like spoiling you
And of course, being their best friend you find your way into your fair share of trouble.
The first time you get kidnapped, you just shake your head and pity the poor sap who thought you’d be a good bargaining chip
“Sources tell me you’re valuable to Red Hood and Arsenal. You just sit pretty until they follow my demands and no one has to get hurt-” “If you really think that’s how this will go down, then you’re even dumber than that gaudy costume makes you look”
Before they can hit you, the glass overhead shatters and they come in guns blazing
Before he can even process what’s happening, the poor guy is so full of arrows he looks like a porcupine and riddled with bullet holes. Really, he never had a chance
They both fuss over you as they cut you free, and you just wave away their mother-henning and tell them to take you home
They do, but after that they decide to teach you to protect yourself
Jason gives you a gun, and teaches you how to shoot
Roy teaches you how to fight, and you get thrown to the ground endless times and feel like a constant walking bruise
“You can do better than that, Y/N” they snort at you
Roy suddenly finds himself eating dirt
Jason feels a bullet whistle past his ear
But that’s what they get for egging you on
The next time they get a call that you’ve been kidnapped, they just laugh and tell you to save some fun for them
Because of who they are and what they do, they sometimes disappear for days and weeks at a time with no real warning.
Eventually the three of you work out a code, and based on what colors or numbers you text in the group chat they know exactly what you need and are ready to back you up
Likewise, if they’re in trouble they know what to tell you to get you to come help, or call in backup for them
You know where all the safehouses are so sometimes if there’s no word for a while, you just pick one and get it ready for them to come home to
And fall asleep on the couch waiting and hoping your best friends are still alive
When they stumble in, bloody and bruised and grinning, you spend a long time yelling at them and throwing things at them
Until you eventually calm down and they pull you into a group hug
And everything feels okay for a while, until the cycle repeats
You just hope they keep coming home to you because as much as they drive you insane, these assholes are a big part of your life and you need them

Let It Go/Klaus Mikaelson Fluff
Most of these are taken from my Wattpad account! (Twtrash01)
Send me requests for the following Fandoms: Teenwolf, Vampire Diaries, Dolantwins, OUAT(Peter Pan, Robbie Kay, Supernatural, Suicide Squad, The 100. Basically I’ll write for any fandom. I’ll write non-smut as well. Be specific in what you want! *I DON’T OWN ANY GIFS*
For some reason I can’t get a single gif to load at all so when I can figure that out I’ll add them to this.
Also might do a part 2?
Request: Could you do a Klaus imagine where the reader is a vampire. She’s Scott’s older sister, Klaus turned her and they’ve been together ever since(the pack hasn’t met or heard of him yet) but one of the pack members (Liam maybe) loses control and accidentally bites her and they don’t know that a werewolf bite kills a vampire until she panics and has to tell them and she has to get one of them to call klaus so he can heal her and the pack is surprised when she tells them about klaus and what he is!THX
"Scotty!" I called out, as I watched my brother emerge from the high school doors. Of course Stiles being with him, "Y/N?" He called back as he quickly made his way towards me. His body hit mine and I wrapped my arms tightly around him, God he smelled like dog. "Why didn't tell me you were coming to visit?" He asked, "Well that wouldn't be much of a surprise now would it?" I asked him with a laugh as he pulled away, he looked me up and down and I saw him take a whiff. "Something's off." He told me, "We've got a lot to talk about." I told him and he nodded, "Y/N!" Stiles called with a smile, I smiled back at him and pulled him into a tight hug. "Long time no see." Stiles said, "What trouble have you brought with you this time?" Stiles asked and I playfully hit his shoulder. "Mom know you're here?" Scott asked and I shook my head, I'm on my way to the hospital. "You wanna come?" I asked him and he and Stiles glanced at one another. "Actually I have some pack business to take care of. I want you to meet them." Scott said to me and I nodded, "I'm gonna go see mom then I'll be home." I told him and he nodded, "See you later." I said messing up his hair. Scott didn't know that I was a vampire, I could tell he had some suspicions that something was different. I planned on telling him tonight anyways. I walked in the front door of my house and I was met with a living room full of people. I recognized a few of them Lydia and Stiles of course. "Y/N this is Mason, Corey, Theo, and Liam." Scott announced, I could tell they all sensed something. I watched as Liam's eyes turned golden yellow, I raised a brow but nobody else seemed to notice. "Guys this is my sister Y/N." Scott said, just as the words left his mouth Liam lunged at me. All I saw was teeth and then there was a searing pain in my shoulder. My fangs protruding and my eyes darkening, "Liam!" Scott yelled, him and Theo pulling him away from me. "What the hell are you?" Stiles asked, "She's a vampire!" Mason said, excitement in his voice. "Don't be stupid vampires don't exist!" Stiles retorted, "Neither do werewolves." Lydia commented. "Shit shit shit!" I mumbled, moving the fabric away from my shoulder which revealed a nasty bite. "That doesn't look good." Stiles said, nearly passing out. "Goddamnit Scott! Doesn't your beta have any control!" I shouted, Liam kept repeating a mantra that I was familiar with. "He didn't know what you were." Scott defended, "You'll heal won't you?" Scott asked concerned, "No she won't." Mason stated, everyone's attention snapping towards him. I moved towards the couch and fell down onto it, "A werewolf bite can kill a vampire." He stated, how did he know so much? "Is that true?" Scott asked me and I nodded. "Well there has to be some way we can fix it, right?" Scott asked, "There is." I said, pulling out my phone. "Call Klaus." I said holding my phone out, "Who? Who's Klaus?" Scott asked. I must've passed out because I woke up and to familiar British accent, "You're lucky I didn't trust all these werewolves around you, love." He spoke, my eyes fluttered open. A weak smile appeared on my face, "Alright sweetheart this isn't your first rodeo." He spoke, holding his wrist up to my lips. He lifted my head as I sunk my teeth into his flesh, "Oh god I think I'm gonna pass out." I heard Stiles say, I immediately felt his blood coursing through my veins. I pulled away after I felt that I had enough of his blood to heal me. "You got a little-" Stiles started but Klaus glared at him, "Yeah never mind." Stiles spoke, Klaus wiped my mouth of his blood. "Feel better?" He asked softly and I nodded as I sat up. "Will somebody tell me what the hell is going on?" Scott spoke, "My sister is a vampire and you you're a werewolf?" Scott asked, he could probably smell it on Klaus. "Half werewolf Half vampire." Klaus clarified, "Original Vampire Hybrid." "He can't be killed." I chimed in, "No way." Stiles said. I stood up from the couch with the help of Klaus, "And the two of you are?" Scott asked, "Together." I told my little brother. "He turned me and the rest was history." I said with a small laugh, feeling so much better now. "Now who's the one who bit her?" Klaus asked, "Hm?" He asked again when no one answered. "Come on Klaus he didn't mean it." I said holding onto his shoulder, "You could've died." He said seriously, "But I didn't." I told him, Klaus glanced around the room. "You." He said pointing at Liam, "You did this?" Klaus asked and Liam swallowed hard, “I’m going to make you suffer in ways your spoiled, little mind cannot possibly imagine!” I rolled my eyes. Klaus had a reputation to uphold, they all looked terrified. "My love let it go." I told him, "Y/N” he warned letting out a huff. “This is the last time, love." he scolded me and I nodded. "Well Scott as fun as this was I'm gonna be heading back go Mystic Falls." I said hugging my brother, "Hopefully my next visit with be a little less bloody." I said with a small laugh, I didn't give anyone else anytime to ask anything before Klaus and I were out of there. "You're lucky I love you." Klaus said, "I know I am." I said kissing him sweetly.

The Rise of Justice - Requested
Requested by anon: Could you do a Bruce Wayne x reader but the reader is Clark Kents little sister? She's not kryptonion, just a normal human that Ma and Pa Kent had after Clark showed up. And Clark is super protective of her, and Bruce is head over overly priced shoes for her! And can this take place in BVS and the boys are still, all like, you need to be stopped, No YOU need to be stopped! Reader knows about their secret identities and is trying to hint that maybe they're over reacting. Plus a little smut...Thx!
Pairing: Bruce x reader
Word count: 3,492
Warnings: Language, smut - unprotected - and I changed the whoooooole story line.
A/N: Wow, BvS was so much time ago...
Enjoy!
Sunday morning after spending time at home felt both sad and lazy. (Y/N) would visit her parents and brother at Metropolis every weekend, arriving there during Saturday mornings and leaving at Sunday’s afternoon.
She loved visiting her family, and she surely missed home, but her job at Gotham was better than anything her older brother Clark could get her on Metropolis. Therefore, she moved out and agreed to visit every weekend.
“I have a friend that is looking for a…”
“Clark.” (Y/N) interrupted his brother. “Enough, we’ve talked about this.”
“I don’t like you to live in a place where a psycho killer can’t be controlled.” Clark hissed.
“Don’t worry about Joker; I’m sure I don’t fit in the victim-profile.” She joked.
“You are dating Joker’s favourite millionaire. I’m sure you’re on top of the list.” Clark fumed, “Also, I was talking about Batman.” (Y/N) rolled her eyes.
If her older brother only knew what kind of relationship she held with Batman…
“Batman isn’t a problem, Clark. It’s not like we’re mates or anything.” She replied nonchalantly.
“Yeah, but we both know what he thinks of me and…”
“And being your sister could mean that I could be in trouble if he could find out your true identity.” (Y/N) recited, “I know, I know. But, is he really a threat? I mean, maybe Gotham isn’t as safe as it could be, but at least he saves innocents. I don’t think he’s a bad guy.”
“(Y/N),” Clark begged, “he is Batman… I wouldn’t be surprised if he was listening to our conversation right now.”
“You’re paranoid, Clark.” She put a comforting hand over her brother’s huge ones. “I can take care of myself.”
“What if you can’t?” He inquired, gulping loudly for the mere thought of his little sister in danger made him shiver.
“Well, I hope being Superman’s little sister comes with special benefits.” She joked and Clark chuckled. “I just have to scream, right? And you’ll listen.”
He nodded. “Just be careful. Please.”
-
(Y/N) was walking by Bruce’s side. She was attempting to tell him all about her visit to her family, but Bruce’s mind was somewhere else.
“And Clark is writing a new article about…” Bruce nodded, encouraging her to continue talking, “Oh and my mom sent you brownies!”
“I’m sure Master Wayne will love to eat them tonight, after dinner.” Alfred spoke, “Right Master?”
“Sure.” Bruce replied listlessly.
(Y/N) shared a knowing look with Alfred and then mouthed him a thank you.
After walking all around his office, making two phone calls and writing two hand-written letters, Bruce finally looked at her in the eyes.
“I’m sorry.” He apologized, “After the destruction… Everyone is going crazy.”
“I know.” She granted. Alfred excused himself out of the room.
Bruce was sitting at his chair, and (Y/N) didn’t hesitate and sat on the desk. Bruce instantly placed a hand over one of her thighs.
“I’m glad you’re fine, and that you had fun with your family.” Bruce said, “I only hope that, for once, they agreed to come here.”
“Why?” She inquired, although she knew the answer.
“It’s safer here.” He repeated just like he had done many more times in the past.
“I don’t know, Superman looks like a good guy.” She joked.
“He is a threat.” Bruce stated, “He’s not human, he has no idea the kind of harm he does and…”
(Y/N) placed a finger over his lips. “Bruce, you don’t have to convince me.”
“Sorry…”
“Batman may be a human – and a very good-looking one – but I’m sure Superman has good intentions.” She spoke softly.
“You always see the good in everything…” Bruce muttered.
“I see the truth… And I’m pretty sure Superman has good intentions.” Bruce was about to argue, “I don’t want to keep arguing. Tell me, what our plans are for tonight, Mr. Wayne.”
“I know I promised you a quiet dinner, but I must get to this thing…” Bruce gave her a sheepish grin.
“You mean the dinner Lex Luthor…” Bruce nodded.
“You don’t have to come if you don’t want to, but you know how much I hate going to those things and you always make them more fun.” He said.
“I guess I can go… I mean, I wouldn’t skip the chance to finally introduce you to my brother.” She mumbled.
(Y/N) had tried so many times to convince Bruce to leave Gotham just for the weekend in order to introduce him to her family, but Bruce always insisted that Batman had to stay. On the other hand, she had also tried to take her family to Gotham – but only her parents agreed – and it resulted in the same thing with Clark: Superman couldn’t leave Metropolis at any cost. But finally, Bruce was going to Metropolis at last.
“Oh.” Bruce tried to hide his sudden nerves, “Sounds like a plan, then. Alfred will call your stylist and uh… Go get any dress you want.”
“I feel so spoiled.” She joked and Bruce gave her a loving smile.
“I’d do anything for you.” He mumbled, “Now, I’m sorry, I have to finish somethings before leaving and…”
“I’ll be shopping, don’t worry.” She stood up, left a soft kiss on Bruce’s lips and left, swaying her hips on purpose to call his attention. Bruce bit his lower lip in anticipation.
-
Lex Luthor’s party was, as expected, glamorous and very elegant. Bruce was wearing a black tux and (Y/N) had a matching dress. They were Gotham’s “It” couple, and so the paparazzi had to take a thousand pictures of them before they finally went inside the building.
As expected, Bruce left (Y/N) for a split second in order to “do some Batman stuff” which gave (Y/N) time to go find her brother.
Bruce eventually returned back, finding (Y/N) within seconds but completely ignoring his brother-in-law. The millionaire kissed his girlfriend deeply, without knowing that Clark was right there and then mumbled something about hating everyone there but here right over her lips.
“Mr. Wayne.” Clark cleared his throat, “Clark Kent, I’m from the Daily Planet.”
“Oh, my foundation is… Wait, Kent?” Bruce’s face suddenly turned pale, “Apologies. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He extended his hand and Clark shook it reluctantly.
“Clark, this is my boyfriend Bruce.” (Y/N) beamed awkwardly.
“I’ve noticed.” Clark hissed.
“That?” Bruce chuckled, “It was just a…” he licked his lips and looked at (Y/N) for back up.
“A thing any regular boyfriend would do.” She finished. “Bruce had no idea that you were there.”
“I hope one of his regular things to do include taking care of you.” Clark insisted, “What’s your position on the Bat-vigilance in Gotham?”
“Daily Planet, wait! Do I own this one? Or is that the other guy?” Bruce inquired. (Y/N) knew he was overprotective of his Batman position.
“Civil liberties are being trampled on your city. Good people living in fear.” Clark spoke and Bruce made a face that threatened to slap his face. “Good people like my sister are in danger, and I’m sure with your money you could do something more than…”
“Don’t believe everything you hear, son.” Bruce interrupted bitterly.
“I’ve seen it, Mr. Wayne.” Clark continued, “He thinks he’s above the law.”
“The Daily Planet criticizing those who think they’re above the law.” Bruce muttered, “Quite hypocritical, don’t you think? Considering every time your hero saves a cat from a tree, you’re puff piece editorial about an alien who, if he wanted to, could burn the whole place down.”
“Bruce, Clark, please.” (Y/N) begged in a whisper.
“There wouldn’t be a damn thing we could do to stop him.” Bruce finished. Clark looked down, trying to hide his anger deep inside.
“Most of the world doesn’t share your opinion, Mr. Wayne.” Clark said.
“Maybe Gotham City and I have issues with freaks that dress like clowns.”
“Seriously!” She groaned, “You two better stop or…”
“Bruce Wayne meets Clark Kent!” Lex squealed, “I love it, I love bringing people together.”
They got engaged into the most fake and uncomfortable conversation of them all, ignoring (Y/N). However, it was in said invisibility that she noticed something else.
Lex Luthor was acting weirder than usual, there was a spark in those insane eyes that alternated between Bruce and Clark and that made (Y/N) shiver. She feared for the secret life of the two most important men in her life.
Eventually, the three men split, leaving (Y/N) right there, not knowing who to chase after. Lex had gone to talk with the governor, and Bruce was repeating his same trail from before. She knew Bruce was off to finish his Batman things.
On the other hand, Clark seemed to be chasing after him, but a few minutes later he left the building. By the determined look on his face, (Y/N) knew he was off to save someone and so she decided to go after Bruce – or at least wait for him to finish and meet her back at the main floor.
The following days were more than tedious for (Y/N).
Superman had done it again, which made Bruce get angry as never before. On the other hand, Clark was absolutely disagree with (Y/N) and Bruce’s relationship. She would not only receive calls from Clark, scolding her for dating such a douche, but would also spend countless time listening to Bruce talking shit about Superman.
“He’s not that bad.” She would say, and funnily enough, it would apply to both ends.
Things went crazier than ever afterwards. Superman was accused of so many things (Y/N) didn’t even know which ones anymore. And Bruce was determined to stop him, whether she liked it or not. Worse part of it all was that she couldn’t tell ones identity to the other, which made her job a hundred times harder.
Because she was decided to do that – make Batman and Superman stop hating on each other.
Then Lois got involved, and (Y/) turned into a wrecked mess. She was trying to persuade Bruce from doing something stupid, as well as trying to persuade Clark from doing something stupid, both at the same time.
They had reached to the point of “You need to be stopped” and neither one would change their minds about it. Basically, they would both want to stop the other, not only because of their love for (Y/N) – which was conscious – but also because they thought the other was a threat – which was unconscious at some point, since they had no idea who the other one was.
(Y/N) felt like she would explode.
“Bruce, I don’t think you should go fight Superman.” (Y/N) pleaded as Bruce got suited up.
“It’s for your own safety.” He explained softly, “If he loses control… We won’t be able to stop him. I have to do it now.”
“I don’t think Superman would ever hurt me.” She whispered.
“Everybody thinks that.”
-
(Y/N) was holding the phone, anxiously praying that he would pick up.
“(Y/N)?” Clark answered.
“Clark! Oh God, you’re there.” She sighed in relief. “Listen, I know what Batman is up to and…”
“And I will stop him, I promise.” He said solemnly.
“No!” She cried, “Please, I don’t want you to be in danger.”
“I’m Superman, it’s basically impossible to stop me.” Clark chuckled but he was dead serious.
“Clark, please.” She begged, “Don’t do this.”
“I’m sorry, little sister.” He apologised, “I’m doing this for you and the rest of the innocent civilians that have to pay for Batman’s enormous ego.”
“CLARK!” But he had hung up.
-
(Y/N) was desperate, just like Lois – who thought (Y/N) feared for the safety of her brother, without knowing they were actually two women caring for the men they loved.
She had to stop them, no matter how much it costed.
Sadly, Lex was fully aware of their secret and he had found in (Y/N) a key piece to destroy either one of the heroes. Therefore, while (Y/N) wandered around Gotham, thinking of ways to stop Bruce and Clark from fighting, one of Lex’s minions kidnapped her.
The fight took place. It was dangerous, and heart-wrenching. (Y/N), in spite of having her own life in danger, couldn’t help but to fear for them. It hurt her to think that, after that night, one of them would be dead.
Who would hurt the most? Probably Clark. He was her older brother, even if they weren’t precisely related. When Ma and Pa had her, Clark made sure to take care of her. He would use his powers to protect her, which inspired him to become a hero for everyone.
However, Bruce had won her heart in ways no other men could before. He was charming, and sassy and passionate. When (Y/N) first got to Gotham, he seemed to be some snarky rich boy that she instantly hated; but after meeting him, she couldn’t help but to fall deeply in love.
Clark was his family, but Bruce was the love of her life. With one, she conformed; but with the other, there was a chance to grow her own family. Hence, her deep reflexion resulted in her grieving both deaths just the same, because in the end they both involved family.
-
Superman had been defeated. Batman held the kryptonite right in front of him, ready to stab him. She would be so proud of him; even if she felt reluctant at first, because she would eventually realize that Superman was, in fact, a threat.
Bruce would take care of her. They would grow a family in a safe world, and when things got rough he would put on his dark knight costume and fight the villains. He would make sure (Y/N) was never put in danger.
“Save (Y/N).” Superman begged.
Had Bruce hear right? Was the alien threat actually saying her name?
“What did you just say?” Batman inquired.
“My sister (Y/N) is in danger.” He explained weakly. “Save her.”
“(Y/N)…” Bruce mumbled as he moved the kryptonite away.
“Yes, (Y/N) Kent… Lex Luthor kidnapped her and she will… She will die if you don’t save her.” Superman coughed, but Batman didn’t notice because his mind was ravelled in the shock of finally knowing Superman’s identity.
He was literally trying to kill his brother-in-law. Not only was that terrible for his image as (Y/N)’s boyfriend, because Clark would never accept him at all after that, but also because she had begged him not to go, knowing her brother’s identity, and he had dis-obeyed and nearly killed the love of his life’s brother. He was screwed.
It took Clark a bit more to finally realize who Batman was.
“Bruce.” He finally stated and, by the look on his face, Bruce noticed he would not be forgiven in anytime soon. “Guess I’m not the only one who likes dressing up like a clown.”
“I meant… The colours are too bright and…” Clark stopped him.
“Just go save my sister.”
“Right, and then we can talk about…”
“NOW!”
-
Once (Y/N) was safe and the storm got calm, the three of them met at Wayne’s mansion. (Y/N) at first figured they had agreed to take her to her boyfriend, but then Bruce removed his mask and a wave of calm invaded her soul.
She hugged them both at the same time as a pearly tear slipped her eye.
“I’m so glad you two are safe.” She whispered.
“If your brother hadn’t… If he hadn’t mentioned your name…” Bruce stuttered.
“I’m sorry for not listening to you, little sister.” Clark said.
“Me too.” Bruce added.
“It’s fine… At least you are now safe and sound.” She took in a deep breath and gave them a loving smile. “I think there’s still something more to say…”
“Yeah… I’m sorry for trying to kill you.” Bruce apologised.
“Apology accepted. I’m sorry for trying to stop you.” Clark looked down in embarrassment.
“Apology accepted. At least you tried to make things better in the end.” Both men stood in an awkward silence for a few seconds. (Y/N) observed them with a cheeky smirk on her face.
“Hug it out, fellas.” She cheered.
“No.”
“Absolutely not.”
But (Y/N) always got what she wanted. Bruce and Clark shared an uncomfortable pal hug that lasted half a second and then they both took three steps away from the other.
“I should get going.” Clark spoke, “Lois might be worried.”
“Sure, say hi to her for me, would you?” (Y/N) asked.
“Of course, little one.” Clark gave her a warm smile. “Please, be careful.”
“I will, I promise.” She mumbled.
“Bruce.” Clark called, “If something happens to her, I will destroy you.”
“To be fair, I kicked your ass out there.” Bruce mocked and Clark gave him a death glare. “Don’t worry, she’s safe with me.”
After Clark was gone, Bruce relaxed. He threw his arms around her waist, carrying her and even spinning around like the most clichéd movie ever made.
“I was so concerned about you.” He confessed.
“And I was frightened as Hell… Oh, Bruce, if something had happened to you.” She caressed his cheek as he put her down.
“I’m right here.” He whispered, taking her hand and leading it towards his lips, where he kissed her palm lovingly. “I won’t ever leave your side again. I promise.”
Before (Y/N) could make a similar promise, Bruce crashed his lips against her in a loving, yet ravishing kiss. He was always like that after a night out, but there was something different about that one.
Bruce had actually felt her loss. The mere thought of losing her had woken something up inside of him, and so he was gentle and soft, but at the same time hungry of her. It was a kind of emotion no one can describe with words but rather with actions.
He carried her once more. (Y/N) wrapped her legs around his waist and he walked to his room. He locked the door behind him and placed (Y/N) gently on bed.
He kissed every inch of her skin as he undressed her. Once she was fully exposed to him, he crawled on top of her, only to realize he was still using his Batman suit.
“Damn… Wait a second.” (Y/N) heard Bruce walking to the opposite side of the room, and the slow process of his suit removal. She heard the heavy pieces hitting the floor – a clear sign of Bruce’s desperation – and the many curse words he exhaled when a piece got especially difficult to remove.
Eventually, he was back in bed. Her legs framed his hips and arms were wrapped around her body, pulling her closer to facilitate the long kiss they were sharing. Her hands had found his hair, and she was stroking it slowly as he aligned himself to her entrance.
He pushed inside her, and she moaned softly over his lips. She was used to him, to his size, but even so she couldn’t help but to moan at the electrifying feeling of him being inside of her.
Bruce moved slowly, at the same pace of the kiss. (Y/N) moaned every so often when he hit the right spot and her hands travelled down to his shoulders, gripping them tightly in search for support.
He moved in and out, speeding a bit faster with each thrust until (Y/N) couldn’t hold anymore. He head fell back, and Bruce kissed her neck as loud moans escaped her lips. He could feel her hard nipples against his bare chest and the vibration of her voice over his lips.
Her walls clenched around him and a loud scream left her lips. Bruce felt her cumming all over him as he fucked her out of her orgasm. Soon after, Bruce followed; gripping her waist tightly as his strong back arched slightly and his muscles contracted. He groaned a curse word as he reached his high.
They fell right next to the other and cuddled closer. Bruce caressed her arms and she traced circles all over his broad chest. They drifted off to a peaceful sleep, knowing that they were all safe, and that, for that night, they could rest without a single worry.
-
EXTENDED ENDING
“I have around twenty missed calls from your brother.” Bruce observed as he took his phone.
“Me too.” She replied.
“Oh, he left a message.” Bruce played it on speaker.
“GET OFF OF MY SISTER! I ONLY CAME BACK TO GIVE YOU SOMETHING YOU FORGOT AND… UGH, YOU’RE GROSS! HOW DARE YOU… OH MY GOD, YOU KNOW WHAT? I’M KEEPING THIS…. WHEN I SEE YOU AGAIN, BETTER BRING THE COSTUME BECAUSE I WILL STRANGLE YOU…”
(Y/N) and Bruce remained silent for a second before bursting in laughter.
“He must’ve used the x-ray vision.” (Y/N) quacked.
“I’m so dead, right now.” Bruce chuckled but then turned serious. “No, wait. He IS going to kill me!”
“No, he won’t.” She assured, “I’ve caught him doing worse things with Lois.”
Masterlist.

Best and Worst Things of 2016
Whew, what a lovely five month hiatus. I'm finally posting my best and worst list for the year 2016. After this post I will probably cocoon again...popping up occasionally. Mind you I am still lurking on everyone's blogs. You may see me pop in every now and then. Although I may not update it often, this blog will continue as long as I watch films and have breath! So hopefully this blog will continue to run for a very long time...albeit intermittently. Admittedly I have seen a good number of films this past year, but I have not have an opportunity to write about them all. The reasons why are abundant. I am in my late 30s, in grad school, have a 3 year old, a husband, and a full time job. So unfortunately this year, my blog went by the wayside. I hope you enjoy my best and worst list for 2016. Please share with me yours, agree, or disagree with me in the comments. I look forward to reconnecting with everyone. I preface my film list by saying that I don't necessarily qualify this list as the best films of the year. They are simply the best films I HAVE seen thus far this past year. I think 2015 was a much better year at the movies. Have I mentioned that 2016 was a bad movie year?
10. The Shallows.
IT'S OKAY...NO SHARKS COME HERE.
Surfer [to Nancy]
Similar to 'Don't Breathe,' this little horror movie snuck up on me. I didn't have high expectations so I was pleasantly surprised that a movie with a plot of "Blake Lively versus a shark" was good, but it really was. That was it. That's the plot. 'Jaws' has been done before so there's no need to go there. That said, for this film--simplicity works. Some of the best horror films have very simple plots. Lively does a surprising good job as a medical student on vacation, attempting to follow in her mother's footsteps (who recently passed away). As long as you don't take this film seriously you will enjoy it. 9. Free State of Jones.
'CAUSE YOU CANNOT OWN A CHILD OF GOD.
Moses [to Newton]
Similar to above, I enjoyed this film, but I don't necessarily qualify it as one of the best films of the year. I had such high hopes for this film because of the fascinating material, but the film's lack of focus is it's greatest hindrance. A good biopic does not have to tell the subject's whole life story or that of their descendants. The film is ultimately a biopic about Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey), who was clearly a man ahead of his time and who led a very interesting life. His story and the story of Jones County, Mississippi is a story that has been lost to history and it's a story that should be told. In the hands of a better writer and director--this film could have been epic. For example, the biopic 'Lincoln' focuses exclusively on a few months in the life of President Lincoln, during a very interesting time during his life (the passage of the 13th Amendment/Abolition of Slavery). Had the 'Free State of Jones' focused on one time period of Newton Knight's life, a mildly good film could have been a great one. Overall a good, yet flawed film. See my full review here. 8. Ghostbusters.
WHY AM I OPERATING THE UNTESTED NUCLEAR LASER?
Erin [to Jillian]
'Ghostbusters' 2016 is by no means one of the best films of the year. Wow, I'm saying that a lot this year. It's not a film without flaws--one of the biggest flaws was the removal of the key master/gate keeper storyline. That storyline made the original 'Ghostbusters' film genuinely scary. But I laughed so hard at this film. This film got so much heat and everyone talked so much crap about it, but it's a popcorn movie. It's not meant to be taken seriously or win awards. It's a summertime feel good flick. We don't need to read anything else into it. Yes, the original 1984 'Ghostbusters' is a beloved film and a classic, but 'Ghostbusters' 2016 is not really a remake. It's an entirely new film with fresh characters who happen to be Ghostbusters. I had a great time watching this film with my friends! So yeah, it's one of my favorite films of 2016. I'll own the hate I get for this choice! See my full review here. 7. Allied.
I'M VERY GOOD AT PRETENDING, MAX.
Marianne [to Max]
This movie received mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it. It was entertaining and it kept me engaged. Brad Pitt (Max Vatan) and Marion Cotilard (Marianne Beausejour) star as two spies who fall in love in Casablanca during a deadly mission. How much more romantic can that be? Canadian spy Max Vatan. Vatan infiltrates German-held Casablanca in order to assassinate the German ambassador. He enlists the help of a French spy, Marianne Beausejour. Once they finish their mission they subsequently fall in love and return to England to continue to fight the war. From the film's trailer you can ascertain that Marianne is later accused of being a double agent. Vatan has to get to the bottom of it. If it's determined that his wife is a double agent he will have to kill her. The film wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be, so that was a big plus. It's not necessarily a film I would see again, but it's a good date night film. My dad enjoyed the film if that gives you any indication how the film appeals to a broad audience. My only complaint is that Hollywood needs to stop pretending that Brad Pitt is 35 years old. Heck, I'm not even 35 years old anymore and I was a young teen when Brad Pitt was a heartthrob in the 90s. Putting enough makeup on 53 year old Brad Pitt to make him look 35 is a little disconcerting every time I see it. I wish Pitt (as well as a few other A-list male actors in Hollywood--like Will Smith and Tom Cruise) would stop trying to look 25 to 30 years younger in their films. It just doesn't work. A little salt and pepper in the hair and not so much makeup would go a long way. There is nothing wrong with a good looking 50+ year old man who looks like a 50+ year old man.
Side Note: My dad is my movie partner and he's typically very naughty. He talks during the film, passes gas, and litters. He's terrible. This time was no exception. On this occasion we finally came across someone who was worse than he was. My father is hard of hearing so he asks me what happened or what someone said or he makes a comment about something happening in the film. My father views the movies as an interactive experience. Every time my father made a peep, the old man behind me would kick the seat a few seats down from me. And I mean he was kicking this seat hard. He kicked that seat during the entire film, which rattled the other seats next to it. I'm surprised I don't have whiplash. So if there was a reason to not like this film that would be it...so clearly this was a decent movie.
6. 10 Cloverfield Lane.
I'M ALWAYS WATCHING.
Howard [to Emmett]
Again, had this been a year other than 2016 (and perhaps if I had seen more films) this movie may not have been on my best list. Geez, 2015's list had so many wonderful little films on it...like 'Bone Tomahawk' and 'It Follows.' Neither '10 Cloverfield Lane,' 'The Shallows,' or 'Purge: Election Year' are of the same caliber, but this is where we are. However, '10 Cloverfield Lane' is an effective thriller. As a sequel/prequel to the original 2008 'Cloverfield' film, one would expect '10 Cloverfield Lane' to "go big," but instead "it goes home." LITERALLY. It delves into the psychology of claustrophobia and paranoia. What I liked most about the film is that it unfolds as a psychological horror film, rather than a creature feature. This film is a fun, tightly woven little thriller deserving of a must see list. See my full review here. 5. Purge: Election Year.
THIS IS THE AMERICAN WAY.
Uncle Sam
I actually think this film would have landed on my best list no matter what. I loved this frightening insane film. The Purge films are my guilty pleasure. The 'Purge' films get a lot of flack. After all, these are not highbrow films, nor do they stimulate intellectual conservation. And yes these films are violent, but thankfully, writer and director James DeMonaco never crosses the line into "torture porn" territory. The horror of the film is primarily in the minds of the participants. The tension is created in the idea of "what could happen" and less on what is actually happening. But what these films lack in critical acclaim, they more than make up for in their entertainment value. Lastly, these films are highly allegorical. The symbolism and social satire in these films only add to its charm. A must see for any horror fan who loves metaphorical films like 'Equilibrium,' THX-1138' or 'Fahrenheit 451.' See my full review here. 4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
THERE'S A PROBLEM ON THE HORIZON.
THERE IS NO HORIZON.
K-2SO
The ending of this film saved it for me. 'Rogue One' is the 'Star Wars' prequel we've been waiting for. 'Rogue One' follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) as the daughter of a disgraced empire scientist Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen). Jyn's story is about the creation of the death star and how the resistance learned of the death star's major flaws and who put it there. The film follows Jyn as she searchers for her father with the help of a merry band of outlaws. Her mission turns into a mission to save the republic. In one fail swoop, this film shatters the need for any of the craptastic prequels of the 90s and early 2000s. It's a typical 'Star Wars' film in many ways, with regard to the action sequences, the camaraderie, and moral quandaries. Where this film breaks the mold is in its ending, which I will not spoil for you here. If I had one complaint about the film it would be the gross under use of Donnie Yen. You don't put a Hong Kong action star like Donnie Yen in the film and not properly use him. 3. Don't Breathe.
IT'S KIND OF MESSED UP TO ROB
A BLIND GUY, ISN'T IT?
Alex
This film would have landed on my best list regardless. Although I don't know if it would have been rated as high. 'Don't Breathe' was the last film I fully reviewed on this blog because it took me by surprise. I didn't know anything about it before I went to the theater, but 'Don't Breathe' is a slick little horror film, with a great cast, and a thrilling (yet unbelievable) plot. Admittedly, the film has enough plot holes to drive a truck through it, but it kept me on the edge of my seat--which is hard to do. What I liked about the film is that none of the characters are particularly likable. This is one of the few horror films in which there are no heroes. It was such an entertaining nail bitter. The casting of the magnificent Stephen Lang cinched things for me. The film's premise is simple-- a home invasion gone wrong...and oh boy do things go wrong. See my full review here. 2. Captain America: Civil War.
THAT SHIELD DOESN'T BELONG TO YOU.
YOU DON'T DESERVE IT.
Tony Stark [to Captain America]
It's kind of sad (for other films) when a comic book film is one of the best films of the year. Seriously Hollywood step it up. The film ran a little long, but kudos to directors Anthony and Joe Russo for creating another wonderful comic book film. DC Comics and Warner Brothers can learn a lot from this duo. The first step to ending DC Comic's madness would be to stop giving money to Zack Synder or David Ayers. Back to 'Civil War'-- this film is a little gem among comic book films. The great thing about 'Civil War' is that it truly felt like an 'Avengers' film. 'Civil War' was the Avengers film that 'Age of Ultron' should have been. When I reviewed 'Age of Ultron' in 2015 I thought the problem was that there were too many characters to feature. Yet 'Civil War' has even more characters. The difference between 'Civil War' and 'Age of Ultron' is that 'Civil War' features Captain America at its heart and rightfully so. Whereas 'Age of Ultron' was all over the place, 'Civil War' is focused. More credit should be given to Chris Evans and his portrayal of Captain America. It's not easy play a genuine "good guy." Evans continues to do it well. He's perhaps the best embodiment of a comic book hero since Christopher Reeve's Superman. See my full review here. 1. Arrival.
IF YOU COULD SEE YOUR WHOLE LIFE FROM
START TO FINISH, WOULD YOU CHANGE THINGS?
Dr. Louise Banks.
This film was so lovely, magical, and well-written. Most scifi films about aliens have major action stars attached with huge explosions and gun fights. So it's rare to see a non-shoot 'em up science fiction films these days, but that's just not how director Denis Villeneuve's(Sicario) rolls. With 'Sicario,' and now with 'Arrival,' Villeneuve may be my new favorite director. Villeneuve's slow, tense, methodical style carries over to his latest film 'Arrival.' Villeneuve also seems adept at directing smart scripts with female protagonists-- a rare quality in Hollywood. 'Arrival' is a muted scifi film that still manages to be exciting. It's also not linear, so things happen out of order, which add to the film's tension. I haven't seen a scifi film quite like this one. The closest example I can give is the 'The Day the Earth Stood Still.' Not the crappy Kenau Reeves version, but the original 1954 film. Another film I would compare it to would be one of my favorite films, 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.' 'Arrival' begins where it ends with a grieving mother. We aren't quite sure who is grieving or why, but it's a sad start to a beautiful film. Oblivious to world events, linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is lecturing her class when 12 alien ships land on earth. She is soon asked to join the alien taskforce by U.S. Army Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker), along with physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner). The film unwinds as Banks and Donnelly unravel the mystery of the aliens language, which is based on circular symbols and is non-alphabetical. It's a fascinating film about language and the commonality that binds us. 'Arrival' would have definitely been on my best of the year list, but I'm not certain if it would have been the best movie of the year if 2016 had been a better film year? That does not take away the beauty and mystery of this film. It's not a perfect film, but it hits a lot of high marks, which is more than I can say for most films in 2016.
Had I been able to see some of the films listed below, I firmly believe one of these films would have replaced 'Arrival' as my best film of the year and would have been pushed off many of the films currently on my list. Unfortunately, I haven't seen these films yet. Jackie. Loving. Nocturnal Animals. Fences. Miss Sloane. Hidden Figures. Silence. Conjuring 2.
These are the films that were halfway decent. They didn't make the cut on any list. Some of these films I enjoyed more than others. Money Monster. - TWO-1/2 STARS Lights Out. - THREE STARS Bad Moms. - THREE STARS Hail Ceasar. - TWO-1/2 STARS Hush. - TWO-1/2 STARS Star Trek Beyond. - THREE STARS. I don't even remember what happened. Jane Got a Gun. - TWO STARS Nice Guys. - THREE STARS
Pete's Dragon. - THREE STARS
Thandie Newton. West World.
Thandie Newton's performance was not necessarily the best performance on 'West World.' No, that prize would go to Anthony Hopkins. Jeffrey Wright would be a close second. But Newton's character was my favorite. Her confident, cocky, call girl was wistful and fun to watch. She's the only character to break through to both worlds in such a fascinating way. She's smart, vulnerable, powerful, charismatic, and oh so cheeky. Like other actors, her performance was nuanced, particularly when she reveals her curiosity and her heartbreak. I'm excited to see her character continue on the series. Newton was nothing short of sensational to watch. Ben Affleck aka "Batfleck." Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
I want to preface that the film was not good. In fact it's on my worst list, but say what you want about Ben Affleck he was a darn good Batman. Despite the haters I knew this would be the case early on for several reasons: 1.) Affleck is a decent actor, writer, and director; 2.) Batman is the ultimate American male. There is something quintessentially American about Batman. No offense to Christian Bale, but there are some slight cultural differences that do not necessarily translate across the pond. Similar to the British James Bond or Doctor Who. 3.) Perhaps most importantly, Affleck is the first actor to bring the appropriate level of rage, anger, and madness to Batman. I love Michael Keaton's Batman, but somehow even in a subpar film, Affleck was able to capture this character in full form. Kudos to Affleck. Now if only we can get him in a better film, with a better director. I have no idea why Warner Brothers and DC Comics keep handing the director of 'Sucker Punch' hundreds of millions of dollars?
West World.
West World was the best show I saw in 2016. Hands down. Anthony Hopkins is a prince among men. I don't know if a finer actor exists in this lifetime. The rest of the cast was wonderful too. Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, and the remarkable Ed Harris are all wonderful. This show. Geez, this show. This is what television should be about. Television should be an incredible experience every week. It should not be about "shipping" or wondering which of your favorite characters is going to die each week a la 'The Walking Dead.' Hopkins plays the enigmatic West World creator Robert Ford. For those who haven't seen the 70's pulp film, West World is a theme park populated by robotic "people" (called hosts) who are used as entertainment for the rich and infamous (guests). The guests routinely rape, murder, and exploit these sentient robotic beings for their own pleasures. It's a brutal world with a hidden mystery that only deepens as we descend further down the rabbit hole and watch the hosts and guests find their ways through this muddled existence. The People Versus OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.
TOUGHEN UP COCHRANE.
THIS IS THE SMOKER'S LOUNGE.
DAYCARE IS ON THE FIRST FLOOR.
Marcia Clark [to Johnny Cochrane]
Riveting, fascinating, incredible. These are a few of the adjectives I would use to describe this show. Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark was transcendent. I don't think there was a finer performance in 2016, besides Hopkins in West World...and that's Anthony Hopkins. Likewise, Courtney B. Vance as Johnny Cochrane is crazy good. Similar to 'West World,' nearly everyone in this series if fantastic. High marks to creators Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski and producer Ryan Murphy for delivering a stellar sister show to 'American Horror Story.' This is what happens when the writing, the direction, and the actors all come together in a perfect symphony. There were very few weak links here. Sterling Brown as Christopher Darden, David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, Nathan Lane as F. Lee Bailey, Connie Nielson as Faye Resnick, were all close seconds behind Paulson and Vance. Surprisingly John Travolta as Robert Shapiro was very very good. I didn't find Cuba Gooding Jr. as convincing but he does good work here too. I remember being a young High School student when OJ Simpson took his infamous ride after the horrifying murders. It was a terrible terrible time. After watching this mini-series, clearly I only knew the half of it. This series is just mind boggling good. So even if you remember the mid-90s and think you know what happened--you really don't. The series also re-emphasizes the humanity lost that night--the lives of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. Somehow the murders of these two people were lost in the media madness. The series brings the tragedy of their murders to the forefront, along with a behind the scenes look into the trail of the century and the people behind it. If you haven't seen this series you simply must.
The Exorcist.
Wow, just wow. I have only seen the original 1973 'The Exorcist' all the way through one time in my life. I assume I saw it on VHS in the late 80s or early 90s. Once was enough. The film terrified me so badly I vowed to never watch it again. IMO it's the scariest movie film I've ever seen and I have seen a lot of films. Needless to say, I was very hesitant to watch this show, but the casting of Geena Davis changed my mind. I was not disappointed. 'The Exorcist' television series is completely unpredictable and fresh. The fourth episode felt like a season finale. Unlike the overtly predictable 'The Walking Dead,' 'The Exorcist' writers know how to write good television without stupid cliffhangers or killing off characters for ratings. 'The Walking Dead' is so predictable that even the hardcore fans have stopped watching the show, excluding the premieres, the mid-season finale, and the season finale. The ratings have fallen to season 3 levels, which doesn't surprise me. Similar to 'Westworld,' 'The Exorcist' threw the television play book out the window and decided to write each episode like it could be its last. So strap in and get ready for a wild ride . You haven't seen television like this in a loooong while. And what a relief that there are actually good writers left in the world. But my favorite thing about this show is that in the end--good always conquers evil. American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare.
This season got a lot of flack, but I really enjoyed Season 6. It was insane, hilarious, and scary. All of these three things add up to one heck of a season. The series actually made both my mother and sister think it was one of those fake "haunted house" shows. No matter what I told them they literally believed it was a "haunted house" show on the Discovery Channel. It was pretty funny. I had to explain to them on multiple occasions that these are actors, playing actors, playing actors. They still didn't get it. So hats off to Ryan Murphy this year. My Roanoke Nightmare follows the macabre tale of Shelby Miller (Lily Rabe), played by Audrey (played by Sarah Paulson) and her husband Matt Miller (Andre Holland), played by Dominic Banks (Cuba Gooding Jr.), who move to a haunted house near Roanoke, North Carolina. The casting of Paulson and Gooding is clearly a nod to their roles in 'The People v's OJ Simpson,' where they played Marcia Clark and OJ Simpson. I found Cuba's performance to be much better in 'Roanoke' than in 'The People v's OJ Simpson.' Miller's troubled sister Lee played by Adina Porter (who is subsequently played by Angela Basset) soon joins them. The house has normal bouts of spookiness throughout the year, but when the blood moon comes out it's on y'all. That's when the ghostly murderous pilgrims arrive. Thomasin White played by Agnes Winstead (Kathy Bates) and her son Ambrose White played by Dylan (Wes Bentley) come out to terrorize their new neighbors and create a reality television phenomenon. Now that I read all this "played by" stuff I realize how confusing this must be for someone who doesn't regularly watch the show and who isn't familiar with the anthology series regulars. Ok no wonder my mom and sister couldn't understand this. Stranger Things.
I was but a wee tadpole in 1983, but I do remember the 1980s. I can attest to the nostalgia of 'Stranger Things.' My husband is a few years older than me, so his middle school picture looks like he was plucked out of 'Stranger Things.' When watching 'Stranger Things' he relived much of his childhood. Afternoons spent in a dank basement playing Dungeons and Dragons, Huffy bicycles with banana seats, baseball caps (he still wears the baseball caps), mullets (he lost the mullet thankfully). According to him, the writers nailed it. Why anyone finds the 1980s to be nostaglic I will never know? Besides 'The Goonies' I don't remember why the 80s is considered such a great time? It certainly wasn't a great time for me. The 1990s was way more fun IMO. I digress. Surprisingly, Matt and Ross Duffer, the brother writing and directing duo (Millennials who were barely born in the 80s) hit the nail on the head. This show hit all the right marks. My only complaint is that I'm a little tired of seeing 80s adventures for pre-teen boys. Thankfully there was at least one pre-pubescent girl along for this ride this time. 'Stranger Things' follows the adventures of three teen boys who go in search of one of their missing friends, but instead happen upon a mysterious young girl who has super powers. You can see my previous review of the series here. The OA.
Wow, what a weird little show. I still don't know what happened. Was it a beautifully woven fairy tale or a dimensional rift? I don't know. What I do know is that the 'OA' kept my eyes glued to the screen for the full eight episodes...all the way to the end. The first episode is a little slow and difficult to get through but once Prairie Johnson (Britt Marling) weaves her bizarre tale as to why and how she disappeared for eight years, she draws you in. Johnson has been rendered blind by a childhood accident. She disappears for eight years, but returns suddenly with her sight restored. The mystery behind her identity and her disappearance unravels before you in a remarkably beautiful story. Black Mirror. Season 3.
Season 3 of 'Black Mirror' started with a bang, starring Dallas Bryce Howard and Alice Eve. Like other wonderful long lost shows, the British anthology has transitioned to Netflix. 'The Twilight Zone'-like series frequently discusses the perils of social media and technology. The first episode 'Nosedive' has a 'Pleasantville' on drugs vibe. Everyone has a social media rating on a scale from 0 to 5 in which people rank their interactions with you. Howard's character is a classic overachiever, but can't seem to break past her score of 4.2. When her childhood best friend and social media darling asks her to be her maid of honor she jumps at the chance but things don't go as planned. Howard's character proceeds to have an epic meltdown. It's a wonderful metaphor for our overly obsessed social media culture. But my favorite episode thus far has been 'San Junipero' with Gugu Mbatha-Raw and MacKenzie Davis. It begins with a heavy dose of 80's nostaglia. Two women played by Mbatha-Raw and Davis meet in a 1980's club in San Junipero. Their unfolding relationship is both beautiful and tragic. The episode touches on big themes like aging, infirmity, and immortality. These two episodes of the third season are an absolute must-see. This episode reminded me just how good of an actress Gugu is. She's brilliant and should get more work immediately! Flash. Season 3.
Flash is a sweet little feel-good television series. It's so much fun to watch, relax, and unwind with. It's not meant to be taken seriously or have deep thoughts. It's just one of those light and airy shows that you don't have to think about it. The writers are actually quite good. 'Gotham' is a close second. 'Gotham' reminds me a lot of Tim Burton's 'Batman' films--it's kitschy, dark, humorous, and colorful. It should be noted that there is a such thing as a bad superhero television show--if 'Legends of Tomorrow' and 'Supergirl' Season 2 are any indication. The Fall. Season 3.
There aren't that many slow moving, procedural dramas that peak my interest. Perhaps it's the casting of Gillian Anderson as Master Detective Stella Gibson. It certainly isn't the casting of emotionless robot Jamie Dornan who plays serial killer Paul Spector. I've frequently said that acting wise Dornan is near comatose automaton. He seems like a genuinely nice person, but I don't find him to be an engaging actor. I assume his popularity has risen exclusively because of his casting in 'The Fifty Shades of Grey' franchise, which is frankly sad. Thankfully the show has Anderson, John Lynch as ACC Burns, and Colin Morgan as DS Tom Anderson. Season 3 picks up after Gibson finally nabs serial killer Paul Spector after two seasons of cat and mouse. Season 3 follows Spector's recovery from being shot and Gibson's efforts to build a court case against him. The third season is muted but powerful.
I've been on a self-help kick this year. So of course my favorite books have been non-fiction. Rising Strong by Brene Brown Tidying Up by Marie Kondo Love Warrior by Glennon Melton Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown On my list to read: Ready Player One.
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I tried to like this book, but ultimately Rubin came across as entitled and elitist. I couldn't get past some of the things she actually considers to be problems.
The Walking Dead. Season 7.
Clearly you saw this coming from my rants above. Kill it before it dies. Please someone cancel this show. If the season 6 "mid-season finale Glen death fakeout" didn't convince you that the writers enjoyed trolling you-- the season finale did. The Walking Dead Season 6 finale was probably one of the worst finales I've ever seen on television. The writers brazenly created the dumbest cliffhanger ever...just to mess with the very people who made the show successful. Simply put--they got greedy and sloppy. They naively thought that their tried and true formula of screwing over the fans to generate huge ratings for the season premiere would work again. Not so fast. Now people are on to you. Everyone knows that nothing happens until the mid-season premiere, mid-season finale, and season finale. So guess what happened. After the season premiere, TWD had a huge rating drop. The ratings dropped to Season 3 levels. If I'm honest, the ratings drop was well deserved and I hope it continues. TWD needs to go away. NOW. Yes, I am a hardcore fan and comic book reader. The Return of the 'X-Files.' Season 10.
Ok if you know anything about me you know that I LOVE THE 'X-FILES!' I love this show. I remember watching the first episode in 1993. In the late 90s, I remember watching an episode of the 'X-Files' while waiting for my friends to pick me up for my prom. When my husband and I were newly together, we watched the series finale of the 'X-Files' together and cried. It was one of the things we bonded over! I have literally seen every episode of this show. So I am hardcore fan. Imagine my disappointment that the new 'X-Files' of 2016 was terrible. It was just awful...besides the third episode, which was classic monster of the week 'X-Files.' Every other episode in the 10th season left much to be desired. I don't know what happened? I hope the 'X-Files' comes back again with better scripts. David Duchovny said it best--when a show has been off the air for 14 years things are a little rusty. So perhaps the next season will be wonderful. I'm hopeful there will be a limited season 11 and that it will improve.
My worst list has been seriously culled this year. I made myself a promise that I would not watch as many crappy films this year. I have also chopped films with known diversity issues. Thankfully I have kept that promise. So I honestly haven't seen that many films this year. I know...what's wrong with a movie blogger who doesn't see that many movies? Well, I just couldn't grin and bear watching so much crap anymore. I just couldn't do it. Although I did try to watch some of the bad movies on Netflix or Amazon. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
I made it through about 20 to 30 minutes of the film and then had to turn it off. I couldn't do it. I can't even give you a proper review because I didn't see the full film. Batman versus Superman - Dawn of Justice.
I actually ended up seeing this film a couple of times...accidentally. After all who in their right mind would see this film more than once? The first scene with Batman's parents being killed was actually visually quite stunning. It was tragically sad, but well filmed. Unfortunately the film went downhill from there. The only two good things that came out of that film were Batfleck and the introduction of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Gal seemed to be the only one having any fun in this dismal film. Gods of Egypt.
It just happened to be on cable television at my dad's house, so I was forced to watch the first 10 minutes. Alas I could only get through 10 minutes of this sludge. It was that bad. My time is far too precious to watch bad movies. I would rather watch paint dry than finish this film. There were no redeeming qualities. The first 10 minutes of the film were basically about Bek (Brenton Thwaites) a thief stealing a beautiful dress for Zaya (Courtney Eaton) his hot girlfriend who he shares a hut with. Then we see some of the Egyptian gods in the form of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau recovering from a hangover by taking a bath 'Coming to America'-style. i.e. being bathed by scantily clothed women. Yep, no thank you. Over and out. This film was on my "no" list from the very beginning. The diversity issues in this film are plentiful, so there was no way I was going to pay to watch this film. Blair Witch.
It started out fine, but this genre is so dead. Literally. There were some genuinely creeptastic parts in this film that freaked me out, but overall this movie was boring. My dad almost walked out. No joke. My dad and I have only almost walked out on three films, 'Batman and Robin' and 'Alien v. Predator: Requiem.' So 'Blair Witch' is in bad company. The ending was relatively decent, but the plot never truly came together. I can't even. Neon Demon.
I so wanted to like this moody film. It reminded me a little bit of 'Cat People' (1982) and 'The Hunger' (1983), both of which I adore. I also loved Nicolas Winding Refn's iconic film 'Drive.' Alas, magic in a bottle may only come once in a lifetime. I'm not sure what happened to this film, but it was a little weird even for me. The plot is basically--the models are literally witches who want to eat the angelic newcomer Jesse (Elle Fanning). Interesting concept for sure, but the film was in desperate need of more susbtance. Some of the characters were fun and strange, but it never found its footing. I wish there had been more Christina Hendricks. More Christina Hendricks may have saved this film for me. 13 Hours. The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
One of things my dad and I do together is see movies--his genre of choice is action and war movies, so despite the reviews of course we saw '13 Hours.' But when a war film gets the Michael Bay treatment be warned. Bay is known for his sensationalism and this film suffers because of it. Unfortunately, '13 Hours' doesn't receive the treatment it deserved. Given that this film is based on true events, I would have liked to have seen a more respectful treatment of the material. Had Ridley Scott or Kathryn Bigelow directed this film, I would have enjoyed the film much more. London Has Fallen.
Gerard Butler needs to stop making movies. Now. This was a follow-up from 'Olympus Has Fallen.' It's an over-exploitative shoot-em up film about terrorists infiltrating London. Somehow only Secret Service Agent Mike Banning can stop them. Jack Bauer he is not. Girl on the Train.
It started out fine, but it soon descends into utter idiocy. Emily Blunt is a solid actress and the other actors are good too. The main problem is the material. The film was marketed as another 'Gone Girl,' but compared to the brilliance of Gillian Flynn's 'Gone Girl,' Erin Wilson's 'The Girl on a Train' doesn't hold up. Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) is an alcoholic who spends her days and her nights on a commuter train longing for the life and the house she once shared with her husband David (Justin Theroux). Through the window of the train she watches her husband's new life with his new wife Anna (Rebecca Furguson) and their new baby. In the process she develops a fascination with her ex-husband's neighbors, Megan (Haley Bennett) and Scott Hipwell (Luke Evans). As she spies on them she imagines this perfect couple have equally perfect lives, but looks can be deceiving. Megan goes missing and her husband stands accused. Could the girl on the train have the answers to her disappearance? Deepwater Horizon.
It's not a bad movie, but it's not a particularly good one. Deepwater Horizon had such a tragic and sad topic that I wish it would have been handled in a more serious manner. No offense to Peter Berg, who is the star of one of my favorite B-movie films of all time ('Shocker'), but the director of 'Battleship' and 'Hancock' simply cannot do justice to a film about the 'Deepwater Horizon.' Like '13 Hours,' it was an over simplification of the events. I would have much preferred to see 'Deepwater Horizon' done in the tradition of 'Spotlight,' 'Zodiac,' or the 'China Syndrome.' I wanted to see a film that took it's time unraveling the tragedy that took 11 lives, polluted an ocean, and destroyed the local economy of the gulf coast-- instead of an action film. Note to self, if Mark Walberg is starring... The Forest.
Natalie Dormer stars as a woman searching for her missing twin sister. Her sister disappeared into a forest in Japan known to be a place where people frequently commit suicide. It's a little far fetched, but go with it. It only gets worse from here. January release was the first clue.
I'm not going to waste two hours of my life to watch a crappy movie anymore. My time is valuable. So I significantly culled my movie review list in 2016. Had the reviews been better I would have likely seen the films below. The Huntsman: Winter's War. The Boss. X-Men: Apocalypse. Alice Through the Looking Glass. Independence Day: Resurgence. The Legend of Tarzan. Jason Bourne. Mechanic Resurrection . Sully. Magnificent Seven. The Accountant. Assassin's Creed. Passengers. Suicide Squad.
I am a huge DC fan, so it saddens me to say that I had to skip this film. I may eventually watch this movie on Netflix if I drink enough wine to make it worth it. I could literally cry at how DC and Warner Brothers are mismanaging their film catalog with talentless directors and bad writers. I do not like Marvel nearly as much, but even I have to admit Marvel (Disney) knows how to use their catalog properly. Most importantly--they hire good people. Seriously, it can't be this hard. I am perplexed how/why the WB and DC keep handing hundreds of millions of dollars to the likes of David Ayers and Zack Synder. It just boggles the mind. Even after Ayer's disastrous take on 'Suicide Squad,' someone at WB thinks it's a great idea to hand over the reins to this near-do-well again for the Harley Quinn film. What fresh hell is this?
Manchester by Sea. Not my type of film. It looks boring. I also do not want to support raging sexual harasser Casey Affleck. La La Land. I seriously have no interest in seeing this film. Someone will have to convince me this is actually a good movie and not just propped up by the Academy because Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone "do" jazz.
Doctor Strange
As I've said in previous posts, I'm not going to pay to see films like 'Doctor Strange,' 'Ghost in the Shell,' 'Pan,' or 'Gods of Egypt' or other films with known diversity issues. I adore Tilda Swinton. She and Scarlett Johansson are probably my favorite actresses of all time. No joke. Admittedly, I admire the emails Tilda sent to Margaret Cho in response to the casting issues. Tilda's emails made me love her even more. The problem is not Tilda, but Hollywood at large. If you recall a post I did last year explaining my new policy of "putting my money where my mouth is." I'm not going to get angry or stomp my feet or create twitter hashtags. If a film isn't representative of people of color or women I just won't see it. When I say representative I mean representative of the culture and the time the film is set in. If it's set amongst the wealthy houses of Victorian England-- I wouldn't necessarily expect to see much diversity. However, if it's set in 2017 New York City in an urban neighborhood then yes, more diversity should be included. If a character is a Tibetan monk, then perhaps the character should be played by someone of Asian descent? There are very few roles for people of color in Hollywood, so to change one of those few roles only worsens the diversity issue in Hollywood. I also understand the concern people have about changing white characters to people of color. I have said before that if a character is iconic then it's understandable to maintain that character's ethnicity. But there are very few characters that would fit that iconic classification. The Bechdel Test In the same vein, I am trying to see films that pass the Bechdel Test. Meaning: At least two female characters are named and talk to each other. That's it. Just two. Amazingly most films cannot pass this test. Again a disclaimer, if I'm watching a film like 'Saving Private Ryan,' I do not expect a film to pass the Bechdel test. Also films like 'Sicario' or 'Gravity' are an exception. These films may only have one female cast member, but she's the lead character. But there's no reason that the entire 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, the original 'Star Wars' trilogy, or 'The Avengers,' does not pass the Bechdel test. Women are 50% of the population for goodness sake.
Birth of a Nation.
I may get some flack for not seeing this, but I refuse to see a film that Nate Parker and writing partner Jean Celestin make. Making matters worse Parker turned this film into a vanity project by starring in it. And yes, I hold Woody Allen and Roman Polanski to the same standard. I haven't seen an Allen film since 'Midnight in Paris' and I don't plan on seeing any of his films either. There are several directors and actors who are on my "nope" list, Parker is one of them. Casey Affleck is also one of them.
