Throwback to last summer when I finished painting this huge piece. Inspired by the character Tess from Thomas Hardys tragic novel ‘Tess of the d’Uberville’ after re-reading it for the gazillionth time. ‘the only exercise that Tess took at this time was after dark; and it was then, when out in the woods, that she seemed least solitary. She knew how to hit to a hair’s-breadth that moment of evening when the light and darkness are so evenly balanced that the constraint of day and the suspense of night neutralise each other, leaving absolute mental liberty. It is then that the plight of being alive becomes attenuated to it’s least possible dimensions. TBT Art Edition. This one makes me actually cringe. I remember drawing this as a gift for my mother. She had this photo framed on her vanity of Marilyn Monroe, and I attempted to draw the scene. I think I must have been around age 12. I hadn’t drawn much aside from cartoons and animals up until this point. Here’s a throwback Thursday art edition that’s near and dear to me. In HS my fave art teacher, Ms. Payne got me started on always having a nice leather bound sketchbook. I drew a page every day for at least one hour. A habit I still maintain, even though it’s more towards digital these days. Often my friends in class would guest in each other’s books. First is my appearance in my friend @jacke1ope book, and then his in mine. Circa 2002.
