The Incident
(GIF NOT MINE.)
Author’s Note: The title is the working title until I come up with something else. Welcome to my Tumblr and welcome all!!! This is a Frankie Morales x Female Reader fic inspired by one of my favorite movies, While You Were Sleeping. This is my first Reader fic, but if your interested, check out the other fics on my Tumblr!!
Chapter 1-The Accident
“Baby, All I want for Christmas is You…”
Mariah Carey blared from the speakers above. While it was a great song, if you worked in the small, local bookstore/coffee shop as you did, every time you heard this song, you wanted to poke your eyes out and drown your ears in hot coffee as you had heard it for the 5th time that morning.
It was 3 weeks until Christmas, and while everyone was nicer and jollier than usual, you were dreading each day as Christmas got closer. You loved Christmas…until 2 years ago.
xxx
You were celebrating Christmas with your Grandma, your only living relative and the kind, sweet woman who raised you, until she collapsed in the kitchen as she pulled out the Special Holiday Roast that she made. You found out that night that she had stage 4 breast cancer and the cancer had already spread to other parts of her body.
Unfortunately, you couldn’t even afford the chemo and other therapies as you had been laid off from your publishing job when the company went bankrupt and you still had $40,000 worth of student debt to pay off. Luckily, your Grandmother’s longtime friend, Pam Greenburg, owned a local bookstore and had just opened up a coffeeshop inside of the store. You were one of her first hires and she happily gave you as many extra shifts and overtime once the store started doing well.
However, it wasn’t enough. Despite you, Pam, her husband, and even your best friend, Cassie’s efforts to hold fundraisers, bake sales, yard sales, etc., it was just too late and your grandmother was too far gone. Plus, she’d rather use the money to help you financially as well as plan her funeral arrangements.
Then that July of the following year, she passed. Pam and Cassie were with you every step of the way and you were grateful for their friendship. The following Christmas was bittersweet for you. You had your wonderful friends who made sure to get you out of the house so that you wouldn’t be alone, but you felt like an outsider around Pam’s husband, kids, and grandkids as well as Cassie’s boyfriend and her family.
You even attempted hooking up with Cassie’s boyfriend’s cousin, but you quickly realized once he finished and asked you to leave his apartment immediately afterwards that feeling alone was better than feeling used.
Xxx
So, here you were, back again a year later, dreading Christmas to come. You were dreading it even more this year because Cassie was going to Hawaii with her boyfriend’s family and Pam was flying out the day before Christmas Eve to be there for the birth of her youngest son’s firstborn.
So it was just going to be you, your cat, Leroy, a tv dinner, and Netflix. Granted, that was how most of your evenings, days off, and weekends went anyways. You were in a rut but you didn’t know how to get out of it.
None of the publishing jobs you applied to were hiring, and you couldn’t afford to move out of the rental property Pam’s husband leased to you at a heavily discounted rate, not with your paycheck, at least.
Day in, day out, Get up, feed cat, feed self, work, feed self/talk to Cassie on her lunch break, back to work, pick up possible second shift, go home, order takeout/warm up tv dinner/maybe cook something, feed cat, watch Netflix, go to bed.
Rinse and repeat. Your life for the past year and a half.
The only bright spot in your day walked in about three and a half months ago (not that you were counting). He looked about a good decade or more older than you, but you were almost 30 so age wasn’t really a factor.
He had the kindest, warmest brown eyes you had ever seen, sweet, kissable lips, a jawline that set his face just right, a sharp, hook nose that would look horrible on anyone else but only added to his appeal, and a 70’s porn stashe with just the right amount of scruff around his mouth and jaw that gave him a rugged sexiness. Dark, unruly hair constantly stuck out from different angles underneath the green baseball cap he wore as if it was permanently glued to his head, but you smiled on the day you noticed that it seemed to curl a bit at the nape of his neck.
You two had only exchanged pleasantries, but in your mind, you had planned your first date, kiss, sloppily making out with him on your couch after the third date, and eventually your wedding. You didn’t know why; you were just drawn to him.
He also seemed like a kind man as he always held the door for whomever walked through, he would let others skip ahead of him in line, and constantly over tipped you. Realistically, you only knew two things about him-his name was Frankie and he liked his coffee black, with 2 creams and 1 sugar. Still, it didn’t stop you from daydreaming about him during the day and fantasizing about him at night.
Xxx
2 weeks and 4 days until Christmas, everything changed. The day started off routine, you got up, fed the cat, fed yourself, went to work.
Today, though you were here for the early morning shift around 7 AM, and to your surprise, Frankie was here too.
Hmm, that’s odd, he’s never this early, you thought, as he usually made his way in around 9-9:30. You shrugged it off and went about your usual business, taking orders and collecting the money.
Frankie finally came up the counter, slight bags under his eyes as if he has been up all night. You noticed the slight slump in his shoulders and he barely made eye contact with you, keeping his head down.
Very off from his usual, shy but friendly demeanor that he had always had with you. Nonetheless, you took his drink order, and wrote his name on the cup. Except this time you bit your lip as you debated writing your number on his cup.
That would be stupid, he might be married-or have a girlfriend!!! Or a boyfriend…or both!!!
But…you hadn’t seen a ring on his finger, but that didn’t really mean much these days.
“Don’t let the fear of striking out, keep you from playing the game,” your grandmother’s voice whispered in your mind.
And, so, while nervous butterflies floated around in your stomach, you took the leap, and wrote your name and number under his name on the cup before sending it off to the barista.
You turned back to Frankie, who was looking down at his phone with a frown, and told him the total. He nodded and gave you a 50 dollar bill.
When you tried to give him the change, he said quietly, “Keep the change,” before heading over to the pickup line. Immediately afterwards, another girl came to relive you so that you could tend to the dining room.
You decided that today you would try to give him his change back as it was way more than what he usually gave. You quickly realized that he was not in the store a few minutes too late and chased after him, but he was already outside, crossing the clear intersection.
“Hey, wait!” You called out, and then it seemed as if time slowed down and sped up at the same time.
In the middle of the street, Frankie finally turned to you, an annoyed, yet puzzled look on his face, as a delivery truck ran the light, turning on the corner quickly, only to skid on a small slick of ice.
The truck side swiped him, and he fell to the ground, his body and head hitting the street with a loud smack, his coffee cup rolling around as hot coffee spilled around him.
The truck screeched to a stop as you and another bystander ran to Frankie’s aide. The bystander, a tall man in a fresh grey suit, pulled out his phone to call the paramedics as you rolled him over on his side to check him.
You were no nurse or EMT, but you wanted to make sure that he was okay. You gently patted his cheek, but he didn’t stir. You let out a breath of relief as his chest rose and fell.
A short while later, it seemed as if you were now on autopilot, a mere bystander to the next few hours of your life. When the ambulance and police arrived, you answered the questions numbly, they even tried to give you a blanket, but you weren’t the one that had been side-swiped by a truck. Pam gave her statement, and as you watched Frankie be loaded into the ambulance, you couldn’t help but worry about him.
“Maybe you should go with him. Make sure that he’s okay? I’ll cover for you,” Pam told you as she patted your arm gently.
You nodded silently, and the paramedics allowed you to ride in the ambulance with him. However, when you arrived at the hospital, he was whisked away to the emergency room. You tried to join them, but a doctor stopped you and said, “Sorry, but unless you’re family or a legal representative for the patient, you can’t come back here.”
He walked back behind the doors, both of them swinging shut in your face as they whisked Frankie away. You sighed, defeated, and decided to wait in the lobby and try again in a bit. As you walked, head down, your mind replaying the day’s events, you mumbled under your breath, “I was gonna marry that man.”
Little did you know, a nearby nurse with sweet eyes and bright orange hair had overhead you. She sighed in pity and said quietly, “Oh, sweetie.”

The Masked Stranger: A Sombrisa Fanfic (rated T for teen) Sombra x Orisa PART TWO!!
Summary: Sombra and Orisa’s dance is interrupted as the evening takes a turn for the dramatic!! Published for the Holidays in commemoration of the Sombra/Orisa & Mercy/Bastion pact.
Written by: Mod Brigitte and beta’d by the wonderful Mod Mei!
Word Count: 1,889
read part one here: https://sombrisaofficial.tumblr.com/post/182195417335/the-masked-stranger-a-sombrisa-fanfic-rated-e
The omnic approached her and Sombra was frozen in place. There before her was a quadrupedal omnic decorated in green and gold. Underneath her trimmings and decorations, Sombra could see she was also tan and brown. Beneath her black mask, her face was painted a bright and sunny orange and yellow, giving off a warm and friendly glow. The omnic had two decorated, lime horns, one on each side of her rounded head; They were draped in flashing lights and crystalized jewelry reminiscent of a flashy monarch. Her metallic plating was decorated for the event in golden markings of African origin, and she had intricate splashes of paint markings all over her body. Fresh carnations and violets were weaved into the expensive-looking tapestry on her back. Her appearance and demeanor were striking! What a magnificent beast of macherinary and software ingenuity! She was very handsome, indeed.
"Hello." Sombra managed to say. It was all she could manage.
"NGHGNdgngnNNGNghhhh" The mysterious stranger whinnied.
"Orisa, is it? A pleasure." Orisa. Orisa. Orisa. Sombra had never heard a name she wanted to say more of.
Orisa's eyes changed to reflect her mood and became curious and blinking lights.
"Oh you'd like to have a dance?" Sombra could hardly believe it. She was ecstatic.
"gHGNHWHHWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" Orisa stomped her hooves in agreement.
Sombra took Orisa's hands and the two began to move onto the dance floor. The room seemed to move in slow motion as they waltzed. It was a perfect moment that Sombra knew she'd look back fondly on later. Sombra never wanted this to end, however, there was more in surprise for that night than the two had bargained for.
One minute the ballroom was flush with lights, colors, and sounds and the next it was overcome with darkness and hushed quietness. No one spoke. The only thing that kept Sombra grounded was her fingers interlaced with Orisa's hands. What was going on?
She felt a sudden bump in the darkness as someone passed by her in a hurry. Her mind started to race. All of these rich people, in this type of setting? But perhaps she had just watched too many telenovelas as of late. This was the perfect place for a robbery or murder, she thought grimly. She let out a shout in protest but whoever it was was long gone. Some time went by. It had to have been a whole minute now surrounded by nothing but darkness. Suddenly, a blinding light sent Sombra's mind spinning. Orisa, startled by the intense light, backed up.
It was a milky white spotlight that focused directly on where one of the windows used to be visible. A tall, thin man dressed in something of a scarecrow costume called out.
"Nobody move! This is a robbery!" His voice was crackly and loud.
Called it, Sombra thought.
The man was holding onto the window sill. He was accompanied by a much larger man wearing a pirate shark costume. It was an Interesting duo, even if their methods of attaining wealth were a bit unconventional. Although, they were certainly prepared for the occasion. The blackout was an excellent idea as everyone seemed to be in a state of panic. She wondered who these masked strangers could be.
"A robbery by JUNKRAT AND ROADHOG!"
Oh.
"Place all your fancy jewels on that table over there!" Junkrat pointed a robotic arm towards the center of the room, to a table just adjacent to the dance floor. The table was fairly inconspicuous. On top of it was just a white tablecloth and a large swan ice sculpture, surrounded by a shallow bucket. "Earrings, necklaces, watches too! Anything of value put it on that table." He began to tap his peg leg impatiently. "Hurry it up."
Everyone looked around in panic as if they expected security to hurry in to their rescue at any second. But no security, human or ominc was present. Where had they gone?
"And why should we do that!" A man dressed in a solid wool two piece suit spoke up.
"I'm glad you asked" Junkrat chuckled and held up a remote. He made a show with his hands as he fiddled with the device. Roadhog, even through his mask, looked exasperated.
"WAIT! Don't press it! We will do as you say." A woman shouted. She was tall, and slim and dressed in a luxury, floor-length, white Vienna gown. The sleeves of which were lace-trimmed and expertly fitted. Her black hair was done up in a way that showcased her diamond earrings, which she was in the process of taking off. Sombra immediately recognized her as the leader of Russia, Katya Volskaya. "Don't any of you watch the news? They've obviously planted explosives beforehand. These are dangerous criminals." She was the first to set her earrings on the table.
"Why thank you." Junkrat took a short bow, nearly falling off the windowsill. "Now you lot, keep them coming!"
One by one, people hesitantly started putting their valuables on the table. Orisa went besides the table and shook her entire body with a thunderous rumble. Jewels from her horns and flowers from her back fell together onto the table. Sombra realized that she hadn't yet contributed.
"What have you there?" A familiar voice sounded besides her. Angela peeked over her shoulder. "I only had a watch. It wasn't cheap but I could live without it."
"I have a necklace." Sombra touched the necklace gingerly before admitting. "Well, it's borrowed."
"Ah." Angela hardly reacted. "Ah, well."
"Ah well is right. I better put it up." Before Sombra had the chance to reach the table, the lights went out again. This time, the people in the ballroom stayed silent.
When the lights came back on, around thirty seconds later, the scene was notably strange. Eyes darted around the room and people exchanged quick words to ask if anything was different. From higher up, even Junkrat looked confused. So the second blackout had nothing to do with them...
A scream interrupted throughout the ballroom. Besides the banquet table, a person, finely dressed in a sequined piece with matching gloves and a feathered boa had fallen to their knees - which were nearly covered in tall peacock-printed boots with four inch heels, pointed at the toes- the person’s face warped in anguish.
"S-She's dead!" The person screamed out.
"Who?" A tall Italian man ran to the person's side and looked to where they were pointing. He was dressed in a chic two piece black suit, with an omnic tech chest piece engraved near the front giving the suit a dignified but innovative look. His silver shoes only complimented the whole piece more. He shouted out. "Paramedic?! Is there a doctor here? A woman's fainted!"
Within a moment, a crowd had gathered besides the banquet table. Even with her heels, Sombra could barely see past the looming heads. But she could see Angela Ziegler make her way to where the passed out body lay cold. A woman in a white dress lay slumped against the table. It was Katya Volskaya.
Angela pressed her fingers against Katya's wrist, then listened against her chest. With one disheartened look, Angela looked where her watch would be before sighing and asking a bystander for the time. "Time of death, 10:10 pm" She stated.
The crowd, as well as the two thieves who were in the middle of robbing them, were speechless. There was an uncomfortable air surrounding the ballroom. Moments later, the lights flickered, and a generator sounded. Heavy metal sheets slid down over the windows and Junkrat and Roadhog were forced to jump down below, landing shakily. The detonator remote Junkrat was holding felt out of his reach and hit the floor, shattering into irreparable pieces. He frantically tried to gather the remnants but was unsuccessful.
"The security has been restored!" Someone shouted. "We've gone into a lockdown!"
"With a murderer!?" A woman screamed.
"And with thieves!" Angela shouted and pointed. "Someone apprehend them!" A crowd began to swarm the two men and soon they no longer posed a threat.
Suddenly Sombra realized how very alone she was. She clasped her hands and looked around the room, looking to see if Orisa was okay. She was standing at the far end of the buffet table next to the stacked tea cakes and champagne.
"Orisa." Sombra whispered. "Orisa!" She waved her hand in front of Orisa who seemed to be in screensaver mode. Suddenly Orisa's eyes focused on her.
"Glad you're okay." Sombra said casually. Her mind was buzzing a mile a minute, but she didn't want Orisa to worry. "Crazy, huh? A murder."
Orisa shook her head up and down and let out a neigh and Sombra knew. She knew it was impossible to keep everything bottled up around Orisa. Sombra could be herself around her and Orisa would understand. It was unreasonable to keep blocking everyone out from how she was feeling. She couldn't let anyone know how really vulnerable she was, but with Orisa she could. "Alright." Sombra said as she ushered Orisa to a more secluded spot.
"Truth is. This is more than I bargained for," Sombra begain "-I'm not even supposed to be here. When the cops show up it's going to be hard to keep a low profile while they investigate everyone. Dios mío, I shouldn't have come tonight."
Orisa whinnied and turned her whole body to face her, quizzically.
"But I'm glad I did." Sombra confessed with a sigh. "It was nice... meeting you."
Orisa whinnied, a long series of electronic chirps and whirrs. Orisa was right, she didn't always have to keep up her facade of a person who had all the cards. Sombra was glad she had someone now who could know her. Just through her words alone, Sombra could tell Orisa was an intellectual.
"Thank you." Sombra brushed a piece of stray hair behind her ear. "Would it be alright if we stay here for a bit before facing the others again? Can we stay, just like this?"
Orisa whinnied. Sombra pressed their foreheads together and they stayed silent. As the night went on, people started to sit in groups on the floor. There was a rumor that the police were on there way and everyone should sit tight but as minutes dragged into hours, uncertainty slowly turned into an icy fear.
Sombra and Orisa continued to share a corner. Orisa had circled twice and seated herself on the floor by a pillar and Sombra leaned into her metallic flank. She leaned up against Orisa and listened closely. Somewhere deep inside Orisa, she could hear mechanical whirring and the soft clicking. A mechanical heartbeat, she thought. Sombra wondered if while sitting this close, Orisa could hear her own heart beating. A deep blush spread over her face.
Orisa kept quiet for as long as it took Sombra to calm down. Five minutes past... then ten. Sombra felt her eyelids grow heavy as she let her mind drift to sleep. An hour must have flown by peacefully because she was suddenly awakened by her cellphone. There was an incoming text from Gabriel.
Gabe!! He was okay!!
Sombra gave the text a quick read.
'The police aren't coming. On the right is a grand staircase, you need to come to the second floor library now. You're in danger.'

Stock market news live: Stocks little changed as traders monitor coronavirus outbreak
U.S. stocks kicked off the week slightly higher, shaking off earlier declines as the coronavirus death toll overtook that of the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak.
Later this week, investors will receive a myriad of corporate earnings results, January retail sales data and semi-annual congressional testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.” data-reactid=”16″ type=”text”>Later this week, investors will receive a myriad of corporate earnings results, January retail sales data and semi-annual congressional testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

The National Retail Federation, which tracks retail shipment volumes at major U.S. ports, warned on Monday that the coronavirus epidemic is adding to the typical slowness associated with Lunar New Year. That means a usual slump is “sharper-than-usual,” the organization says:
“February is historically a slow month for imports because of Lunar New Year and the lull between retailers’ holiday season and summer, but this is an unusual situation,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said.
“Many Chinese factories have already stayed closed longer than usual, and we don’t know how soon they will reopen. U.S. retailers were already beginning to shift some sourcing to other countries because of the trade war, but if shutdowns continue, we could see an impact on supply chains.”
Accordingly, trying to forecast container volumes “has become even more challenging” and it’s far from clear when the manufacturing sector will normalize, the NRF said.

In a lengthy study published Monday, Bank of America put a new spin on a slowly unfolding story: Namely, that global supply chains are migrating to other countries like Southeast Asia, India and even North America.
According to a BofA study, “…much more surprising was that companies in about half of all global sectors in North America declared an intent to ‘reshore’. This was particularly true for high-tech sectors and industries for which energy is a key input. If borne out, this could represent the first reversal in a multi-decade trend.”
In all, multinational companies worth $22 trillion in market cap are being impacted, and the bank warns that investors may not be ready. So what’s behind the shift? BofA noted there are several reasons, but among them are tariffs, narrowing tax advantages, and national security. And the kicker:
“In our view, these movements are ‘tectonic’: slow moving, persistent with major changes to the business environment for global companies.
“…We don’t think investors are fully prepared for this tectonic shift. In our view, the US could be a significant beneficiary of this process, while Chinese firms are perhaps most at risk. Even more striking, our survey found almost universal intent to use automation.”
As such, the bank recommends adding exposure in automation, industrials and banks stocks in the regions set to become beneficiaries of the shift.

In the last couple of sessions, Wall Street has had a delayed reaction to coronavirus fears. Yet according to DataTrek, there are several reasons why stocks haven’t priced in more aggressive losses:
The illness is still largely contained to Mainland China, with 99% of the worldwide cases through today. Even if you do not trust the Chinese government numbers, the count outside the country is trustworthy.
China is addressing the outbreak aggressively, with mass quarantines and other measures enabled by its powerful authoritarian governance structure.
Markets know this means 1H global economic growth will slow, but they also assume a containment of the disease during this timeframe because of the steps outlined in the prior point.
The virus will make for a temporary truce in the US-China trade war that will extend for at least several more months. President Trump knows there is no point in pushing on the issue while the Chinese government is focused on this crisis.
…A 2H 2020 re-acceleration in global growth (post the presumed containment of the virus) will serve President Trump well going into the November US general election. Markets see him as better for the US economy than current Democratic front-runner Bernie Sanders.
Bond markets, in true on-brand form, see the economic effects of the coronavirus as modestly deflationary (more on this in a moment). Yields have therefore declined around the world, supporting equity valuations. And since central banks are fixated on deflation, the chance they will cut rates is rising.
All told, the firm points out that the stock market is more of a leading indicator, with investors pricing in where growth/earnings will end up in 6 months time. “Investors see the real possibility of a period of global economic catch-up” in the second half — and a Trump reelection bolstering next year and beyond.

10: 27 a.m. ET: U.S. economic growth could take a hit in Q1 as coronavirus impact spreads
U.S. real gross domestic product growth could slow well below 1% in the first quarter as the impact of the coronavirus takes hold, according to a note from UBS economist Seth Carpenter Monday. These effects, however, will likely reverse in the second and third quarters this year, he added.
We see the net effect on the US as being small, but the quarterly swings are likely to be measurable. For the US, we see the effect coming through three channels: tourism, exports, and a temporary disruption to manufacturing because of delayed imports. For Q1, we have trimmed our real GDP estimate by 0.2 [percentage points] to a 0.4% [quarter on quarter] annual rate. We assume that the hit in the US from the coronavirus is mostly reversed over the course of Q2 and Q3. There are significant risks to this forecast. Our forecast change is conditional on China reopening production next week and based on the China team’s assessment that production disruptions will be small.
GDP growth of 2.7% in the first quarter.” data-reactid=”85″ type=”text”>UBS’s prediction for U.S. Q1 GDP is below that of the Atlanta Fed. The regional bank’s closely watched GDPNow model estimates real GDP growth of 2.7% in the first quarter.

7: 47 a.m. ET: Stock futures mixed as coronavirus death toll rises
Contracts on the three major indices were mixed Monday morning, after falling for the first time in five sessions on Friday. Fears over the spread of the deadly coronavirus continued to be a focal point for global investors.
As of Sunday evening, the coronavirus had claimed the lives of 908 in mainland China, and total cases rose to 40,171, according to China’s National Health Commission. Ninety-seven people died from the disease on Sunday alone. More have now been killed by the coronavirus than during the SARS outbreak of 2002 to 2003, which killed 774 individuals.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, noted in a Twitter post Sunday that some coronavirus cases have begun to emerge even in individuals who did not travel to China.
There’ve been some concerning instances of onward #2019nCoV spread from people with no travel history to . The detection of a small number of cases may indicate more widespread transmission in other countries; in short, we may only be seeing the tip of the iceberg.
— Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (@DrTedros) February 9, 2020
In the UK, where there have so far been eight confirmed coronavirus cases, the country’s health secretary called the outbreak “a serious and imminent threat to public health.” Elsewhere, more than 3,000 people have been stuck on a cruise ship in Yokohama, Japan, in a two-week quarantine, with dozens on board having tested positive for the coronavirus. Separately, home-rental services Airbnb has halted bookings of all listings in Beijing through the end of February in effort to contain the coronavirus.
Here were the main moves during the pre-market session, as of 7: 47 a.m. ET:
S&P futures (ES=F): 3,324.75, down 0.75 points or 0.02%
Dow futures (YM=F): 29,025.00, down 19 points or 0.07%
Nasdaq futures (NQ=F): 9,413.25, up points or 0.04%
Crude oil (CL=F): $50.18 per barrel, down $0.14 or 0.28%
Gold (GC=F): $1,575.10 per ounce, up $1.70 or 0.11%

When I read through my fellow bloggers posts I’m often inspired by their graphics, ideas, books to read, and discussions. When I read Marie’s posts I am all of those things but mostly I’m amazed at the amazing content she produces. This is a woman who has a full time job and still spends a few hours daily writing a blog. Her posts are incredible, well spoken, and unique. If you have never gone to her website and visited her blog, please do!

I’m sure we all feel like we know Marie pretty well, right? I hope I can learn something new from her answers to these 10 questions.
Blogging is universal and even though we inhabit the same community, we don’t always live in the same country. What country do you live in?
I live in the country of baguettes and croissants (and annoying strikes….), France.
Most blogs have a quirky name and a fun story of origin. Please share the story behind your blogs name?
My blog is called Drizzle & Hurricane Books and I thought my reference here would be obvious, yet apparently it’s not, for many people, so…
I’m a huge fan of John Green’s books and my favorite book is Looking for Alaska. There is a famous quote in that book, about drizzle and hurricanes and… when I was looking for a blog’s name, I actually stumbled upon one of the quotations up on my wall, and saw that one. I thought it’d make a pretty name for a blog and…. when you think about it, some books have the same effects as drizzles, or hurricanes, so… 🙂
Describe where you write your blog.
I usually write my blog posts on my couch at home, either with some tv on the background or just nothing.
Most of us have a stack of books sitting next to our couch or bed waiting to be read. What books are in your stack?
I currently have three books waiting to be read :
Once and For All, A Quiet Kind of Thunder, and Little black dresses, little white lies
In case you’d like to check out these books…
A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard
A girl who can’t speak and a boy who can’t hear go on a journey of self-discovery and find support with each other in this gripping, emotionally resonant novel from bestselling author Sara Barnard. Perfect for fans of Morgan Matson and Jandy Nelson.
Steffi doesn’t talk, but she has so much to say. Rhys can’t hear, but he can listen.
Steffi has been a selective mute for most of her life. The condition’s name has always felt ironic to her, because she certainly does not “select” not to speak. In fact, she would give anything to be able to speak as easily and often as everyone around her can. She suffers from crippling anxiety, and uncontrollably, in most situations simply can’t open her mouth to get out the words.
Steffi’s been silent for so long that she feels completely invisible. But Rhys, the new boy at school, sees her. He’s deaf, and her knowledge of basic sign language means that she’s assigned to help him acclimate. To Rhys, it doesn’t matter that Steffi doesn’t talk. As they find ways to communicate, Steffi discovers that she does have a voice, and that she’s falling in love with the one person who makes her feel brave enough to use it. But as she starts to overcome a lifelong challenge, she’ll soon confront questions about the nature of her own identity and the very essence of what it is to know another person.

Once and For All by Sarah Dessen
Is it really better to have loved and lost? Louna’s summer job is to help brides plan their perfect day, even though she stopped believing in happily-ever-after when her first love ended tragically. But charming girl-magnet Ambrose isn’t about to be discouraged now that he’s met the one he really wants. Maybe Louna’s second chance is standing right in front of her.

Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies by Laura Stampler
Harper Anderson has always thought she should have been born somewhere more glamorous than her sleepy Northern California suburb.
Already resigned to working at a Skinny B’s Juice Press for the summer, Harper is shocked when the ultra-prestigious teen magazine, Shift, calls to say they want her to be their teen dating blogger for the summer. All she needs to do is get her butt to New York in two days.
There’s just one teeny, tiny problem: Apart from some dance floor make-outs, Harper doesn’t have a whole lot of dating experience. So when Shift’s application asked for an “edgy” personal essay, Harper might have misappropriated her best friend’s experiences for her own. But she can just learn on the job…right? Will the house of lies Harper has built around her dream job collapse all around her, or will she be able to fake it until she makes it in the big city?

If you have had a bad day and want to spend an hour reading a book, what is your go to genre or favorite book that will lift your mood?
My go-to genre will always be young adult contemporary – whether it’s to lift up my mood, get me out of a slump or, just, you know, always. I just LOVE contemporaries too much, haha.
When you aren’t blogging, how do you spend your time? Work, Play, School?
I graduated university back in 2016 and I’m currently working full-time. When I’m not, I’m reading, blogging, traveling when I can, watching tv shows and waiting for my next holidays. Or book in the mail.
What is your favorite blog post you’ve ever written?
This is such a hard question? I think I’d go with my blog post about the struggles of an international blogger, since it’s a topic I hold really close to my heart.
The Struggles of Being an International Book Blogger
Have you ever met one of your favorite authors? If so, what did you say to them? Looking back, what do you wish you had said instead?
I actually had never met any big authors up until earlier this year. I went to the biggest book fair in Paris and got to meet some of my favorite authors of all times: Sarah Dessen, V.E. Schwab and Marissa Meyer.
I kind of said hello and thank you a whole lot, even when there was no need to. Sarah Dessen told me she liked the book I took with me (The Truth About Forever) I said thank you, she said she liked the cover, I said thank you. Now, I’m like, WHY. I asked them about France and if they liked it there, but somehow I wish I could have expressed my love for their books a bit more?! I was just very awkward okay.
Do you have any blogging goals for the next year?
I’m not sure – I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, even if I love a good goal. I’d love to get more opportunities to work closely with publishers I admire. I’d love to help bloggers more. Most importantly though, I’d love to RELAX about blogging and just be chill and happy with what I put out there. And keep on loving it 🙂
If you could sit down with an author for a slice of cake and a question, who is the author, what kind of cake would you serve, and what is the first question you’d ask?
My favorite author of all times is John Green so, obviously I’d love to sit with him and have a slice of cake. I’d have chocolate cake, because it’s my favorite, but I have absolutely NO idea what the hell I would ask him, I’d probably be in shock or something. To be honest and practical, I’m thinking the first thing out of my mouth would be “how are you”.
Thanks Marie, so much for agreeing to answer my questions! FYI, I just read Sarah Dessen’s book myself, and it was very good! (review soon!) I am probably the only person who has not read any of John Green’s novels, but on your recommendation I may have to pick one up!
Has anyone else read any of the books on Marie’s bookshelf? If you’re a fan of John Green, which book is your favorite?
Thanks for reading my Blogger to Blogger post!

This past weekend I have been on my travels again. After a fairly sedate week at work, where I spent most of if trying to work out what day it was thanks to the Bank Holiday, Mandie and I have headed oop north, very far up North as it happens, to Stirling in readiness for the launch of Bloody Scotland 2018, which takes place today at the Golden Lion Hotel. Excited muchly? Yes. Yes I am.
As if this wondrous happening wasn’t enough, we also booked out trains, hotels and accommodation for Bute Noir in August. this is the first time I have been off mainland Scotland and while it may not be the furthest away island I am still a touch excited and totally looking forward to it. Much of my holiday time is being spent exploring parts of the British Isles that I have either not experienced before or not visited in years. You would think with my job I’d be bored with travelling the UK by now but you’d be wrong. Have you actually stopped and taken time to look around you lately, or perhaps a little further afield. Our island, small, waterlogged and generally poo on the weather front as it may be. is actually a pretty bloody fantastic place to visit and there are so many parts I have yet to explore. Bring it on. Despite this being the fifth time in a smidge over two years that I have been to Stirling, this is the first time I’ve been to the Wallace Monument so there is always the chance to do something new, no matter how many times you go somewhere.
On the bookish front, it was all rather quiet again until mid week when I received a package from the lovely Karen at Orenda Books. Copies of Big Sister by Gunnar Staalesen, The Lion Tamer Who Lost by Louise Beech and Overkill by Vanda Symon. I also received a copy of the next Leigh Russell Geraldine Steel title, Death Rope from publishers No Exit and How Far We Fall by Jane Shemilt from Penguin. I also received a digital arc of A Steep Price by Robert Dugoni from Thomas and Mercer. Super tidy book week for me then 🙂
One Netgalley ARC this week which is one I have been looking forward to. I picked up The Thieftaker’s Trek by debut author Joan S. Sumner. I met Joan on the Crime and Publishment course in March and we had a really good talk about her writing. It turns out I have a little knowledge of the area in which Joan has set her books, if not of the era in which she has written them, but I’m really excited to read it and find out more.
So … last week I was on a bit of buying slump. Yeah … that’s over. 😀 I bought the following: The Defence, The Plea, and The Liar (also on audible) by Steve Cavanagh, The Lion Tamer Who Lost by Louise Beech, After He Died by Michael J Malone, The Girl With No Name and Her Mother’s Grave by Lisa Regan. I also took the liberty of ordering the US cover of Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh as it is very pretty (Not out until 2019 but I can wait …) and Death Rope by Leigh Russell.
Normal service has resumed. Yay. (For Amazon anyway).
Books I have Read
Ultima – LS Hilton,
The shockingly audacious conclusion to the international bestselling phenomenon that began with Maestra. If you can’t beat them – kill them
First there was Maestra. Then there was Domina. Now – there is Ultima.
Glamorous international art-dealer Elizabeth Teerlinc knows a thing or two about fakes. After all, she is one herself. Her real identity, Judith Rashleigh, is buried under a layer of lies. Not to mention the corpses of the men foolish enough to get in her way.
But now, caught in the murderous crossfire between a Russian Mafia boss and a corrupt Italian police detective, Judith is forced to create an even more daring work of art – a fake masterpiece she must take to the world-famous auction house where she used to be a lowly assistant and sell for $150 million.
For Judith the prospect of putting one over her loathsome former employer and the world’s art establishment is almost as thrilling as the extreme sex she’s addicted to – especially when the price of failure is a bullet in the back of the head.
But exposing her new identity to the glare of the spotlight puts her at risk of an even greater danger. Like a beautiful painting stripped of its layers of varnish, something altogether different could be revealed.
A truth about her past even Judith might find shocking.
Yes. I know. I surprised me too. But you know what? I actually enjoyed this. Slightly steamier than your average thriller, there was a great story and really strong characterisation behind this book and as this was the final part in the series, I’m actually looking forward to going back and reading the first two. You can read my review here and purchase a copy of the book here.
…
Follow Me Home – DK Hood
‘Don’t you agree Detective? That some people deserve to die? I’ve killed the first. I’ve killed the second. Now will you catch the others, or do I have to kill them too?’
The body of Amos Price lies in a pool of blood on the polished floor of an otherwise empty house. With no signs of a break in, and no clues left at the scene, Detective Jenna Alton is at a loss.
But as the team begins to unpick the life of the reclusive victim, they discover a disturbing link between Amos and the disappearance of several young girls in the county going back years.
Days later, another brutally murdered body is found, in a remote motel on the outskirts of town. Ely Dorsey was killed in a frenzied attack and Jenna fears not only that the murders are connected to the missing girls, but that the killer hasn’t finished yet.
As Jenna tries to work out who will be next, the killer suddenly starts sending her deputy, David Kane, messages. Is she being taunted? Or does the murderer want to be caught? And will Jenna discover who’s behind these killings before more people die?
An absolutely nail-biting thriller with plenty of twists, Follow Me Home is perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter and Rachel Abbott.
The third part in the Kane and Alton series sees them on the hunt for a vicious killer who seems to be extracting their own kind of justice for truly heinous crimes. The subject matter is tough to read but carefully handled. The murders are brutal and varied. You’ll be able to read my review as part of the tour and can order a copy of the book here.
…
First to Die – Alex Caan
A DARK AND EDGY CRIME THRILLER FOR FANS OF SARAH HILARY, KATERINA DIAMOND, ANGELA MARSONS AND ROBERT BRYNDZA.
SOMEWHERE IN THE CROWD IS A KILLER
Bonfire Night and St James’s Park is filled with thousands of Anonymous protesters in a stand-off with the police. When a cloaked, Guido Fawkes mask-wearing body is discovered the following morning, Kate Riley and Zain Harris from the Police Crime Commissioner’s office are called in.
The corpse has been eaten away by a potentially lethal and highly contagious virus. The autopsy reveals the victim was a senior civil servant, whose work in international development involved saving lives. Why would anyone want him dead?
THEY WILL STRIKE AGAIN
As the research team looking into the origins of the deadly virus scramble to discover an antidote, first one, then another pharmacist goes missing. Meanwhile, a dark truth starts to emerge about the murder victim: he was an aggressive man, whose bullying behaviour resulted in the suicide attempt of one of his former staff members.
AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT . . .
With thirty lives potentially at stake, Kate and Zain have their work cut out for them. Can they find the two missing pharmacists in time, or will they too end up dead?
Gah. You have no idea how long I have wanted to read this book. I have had several false starts, plus some emergency blog tour reads which demanded my attention but have finally been able to finish what I started and boy am I a happy bunny. Uncannily topical this book had me hooked from start to finish. Oh how I have missed Zain. You’ll be able to read my review around publication day (not long now – 14th June) but can preorder a copy here.
…
Three books. Not bad considering I got distracted by Bute Noir and spent half a day driving to Stirling. I am actually half way through another audio book as well so I am still being productive if not effective. Blog wise, I have no idea but here is a recap.
Ultima by LS Hilton
Guest Review: Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski
Absolution by Paul E. Hardisty
Summer at the Little Cottage on the Hill by Emma Davies
When the Waters Recede by Graham Smith
Okay. So not so busy, Well I did say i was slowing down … This week I have blog tours today for Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh and on Friday for Big Sister by Gunnar Staalesen. If you stop by on Sunday, I may have a bit of a surprise for you all too.
Funny old week this week. I’m only actually in the office for two days (yippee) because I have a two day leadership conference to attend at Alton Towers of all places (less yippee) and of course today I am in Stirling. Then I am off work for a whole week so no office for me. Cannot wait. I may even remember to put my out of office on the email this time as well. Whoops.
Have a fabulously bookish time this week folks. I’m sure you’ll be hearing from me again very soon as I let you know all about this year’s Bloody Scotland line up. I am so excited.
If anyone wants to know why I blog and why I travel the country so much then this … this is why. I am super privileged to be in a position where I can do this kind of thing, where I am offered the chance to be part of something really special and where I am trusted enough to help to spread the word. You can keep the free ARCs, I am lucky enough to be able to afford my own books (as this weeks purchases will confirm). I appreciate being trusted with the books, I truly do, but they are not why I do this. What drives me, what I love about blogging, is being given the opportunity to support, champion and shout out about the bookish community that I love. What a gift.
Speak soon.

TV We're Thankful For in 2017: Grey's Anatomy, Game of Thrones and More
New Post has been published on https://gossip.network/tv-were-thankful-for-in-2017-greys-anatomy-game-of-thrones-and-more/
TV We're Thankful For in 2017: Grey's Anatomy, Game of Thrones and More
The CW; NBC; ABC / Melissa Hebeler; E! Illustration
It’s that time of year, TV fans.
Time to gather around with loved ones, pile your plate full of turkey and pumpkin pie, unbutton that top button on your pants, and dig in. But before you do, it’s only customary to go around the table and share what your most thankful for. In that spirit, the E! News TV Team is coming at you with what we’re most grateful for this year—and you know it all has to do with our beloved small screen. (Yeah, yeah, we’re thankful for our families and our health, too. But you don’t want to hear all that mushy stuff!)
Every Thanksgiving, the members of our team reveal what TV delights got them through the year, ranging from massive milestone episodes to minor moments. So join as as we share with you what we’ll be talking about when we get together with our families to distract us from ruminating on what a bizarre year this has truly been. And, as always, be sure to let us know what you’re thankful too!
NBC
This Is Us For Giving and Withholding
I fully admit I was a bit nervous going into season two that the show, which has possibly achieved a new level of hype and exposure in the TV world, would hit the dreaded sophomore slump, doubling down on aspects of the show fans loved. (We get it, Internet, you all want to know how Jack died!) Fortunately, the show gave us a few clues in the premiere, and are slowly but steadily doling out the explanations, choosing to focus on character-building and relationship-testing storylines. —Tierney Bricker
CW
Crazy Ex‘s Continued Excellence
Bless Rachel Bloom, Aline Brosh McKenna and the entire cast and crew of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The beloved CW musical dramedy continues to push boundaries in every possible direction without feeling forced or preachy. Rebecca Bunch’s evolution (or spiral to rock bottom) has been handled with grace, while remaining hilarious. Striking that hilarious/poignant balance is no easy feat, especially when dealing with mental illness, but Crazy Ex-Girlfriend continues to walk that line expertly in season three. —Chris Harnick
ABC
Grey’s Anatomy‘s Ghosts
Grey’s Anatomy joined an elite club of shows this year when it aired its landmark 300th episode, and in doing so, paid perfect homage to all those who helped get the series off the ground and keep it afloat for 14 years. From the trauma patients who bore uncanny resemblances to former stars T.R. Knight, Sandra Oh and Katherine Heigl, to the very early Grey’s feel of the interns’ actions, to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) seeing Ellis (Kate Burton) up in the O.R. observation gallery, applauding her Harper Avery win, it was a pitch-perfect episode. —Billy Nilles
The CW
Riverdale
I don’t know what this show is smokin’ most of the time. It’s insane and makes no sense, but I love that it exists. I love that there’s a show on TV that will just throw out any wacky thing it thinks of in the most dramatic fashion while we’re just supposed to accept it. Sure, that’s how you join a gang. Sure, Jingle Jangle is a great name for a drug. Sure, shower sex is a great idea while you’re washing your father’s blood off of your clothes. Whatever. It’s great, and I’m so thankful we have it. —Lauren Piester
HBO
Game of Thrones For its Incest*
OK, I am NOT a fan of incest. BUT I did like finally feeling vindicated by Jon Snow and Dany’s hookup this past season after calling that it would happen for years! Yes, my need to gloat tops my disdain for relatives hooking up. (Also, they don’t know?! I am trying to convince myself it’s OK to help this ‘ship sail, people. No one said shipping was easy.) —Tierney Bricker
*But Cersei and Jaime are just messed up. Period.
NBC
The Good Place
NBC’s The Good Place is easily my happy place. Kristen Bell and Ted Danson lead a cast that’s on top of their games. The Good Place turned everything on its head at the end of season one, allowing for season two to truly blossom. If D’Arcy Carden doesn’t get an Emmy for playing Janet, well, fork that. —Chris Harnick
Netflix
The Funny Ladies of Netflix
It seems like Netflix drops a new series every time I blink my eyes, to varying degrees of quality, but since the January release of the One Day at a Time reboot (starring the luminous Justina Machado), they’ve proven to be a haven for some of the funniest women in the game. Aside from mainstays Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Grace & Frankie, the streaming giant brought Drew Barrymore to TV in the madcap zombie comedy Santa Clarita Diet, introduced the world to the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling with GLOW, found Dear White People‘s trio of fantastic female leads (Logan Browning, Antoinette Robertson, and Ashley Blaine Featherston), and gave us a second season of Maria Bamford‘s sweetly surreal Lady Dynamite. Even The Defenders was slightly redeemed by Krysten Ritter‘s Jessica Jones and the humor she injected into the otherwise dull proceedings. In a year that’s proven there are more bad men in Hollywood than we could even count, turning these funny ladies on and tuning out an ugly world has been a true godsend. —Billy Nilles
Netflix
Babysitter Steve Harrington
I loved all of season two of Stranger Things (even that terrible episode!), but what I loved most was the fact that my season one love of Steve Harrington was not only justified, but it became larger and more widely accepted. The whole world now sees the joy in this ’80s jock who’s really just a kindly single mom at heart, with Farrah Fawcett hair and a baseball bat covered in nails. We can all now unite behind Steve Harrington, and for that I am thankful. —Lauren Piester
YouTube
Luann Falling Into a Bush on RHONY
Sure, Luann (or Lu, as her friends like to call her) has given us so many .gif(t)s over the years, but does anything top her falling harder than she fell for (Please don’t let it be about) Tom into a bush after drinking a few too many margaritas on the RHONY ladies’ infamous trip to Mexico? Oh, and then her subsequent fall off of a four-foot high cement platform? Classy as ever, she laughed it off…and woke up to do yoga, surf and give zero effs about her drunken antics the following day. This is how you Housewife, people! —Tierney Bricker
TLC
90 Day Fiance
Somehow I have become somebody who not only DVRs 90 Day Fiance, but also tweets about it. The guilty pleasure reality show satisfies all my curiosity and drama needs. Who’s actually in love? Who’s so delusional? My judgmental nature flies freely thanks to this show. Don’t even get me started on Before the 90 Days… —Chris Harnick
NBC
SNL‘s Lowkey Obsession With RHOBH‘s Erika Jayne
All hail the kitty ambassador to the twink republic of Quonk! I’m not sure who in the SNL writers’ room is a hardcore fan of the RHOBH fave, but I’m so glad they are. It was exciting enough when, during Chris Pine‘s episode in May, he and Bobby Moynihan performed a “lip sync for your life” to Erika’s “XXPEN$IVE.” But watching Cecily Strong become Erika—excuse me, Candace—during the “New Wife” sketch with Larry David in early November slayed me. Now who do I have to bribe with munty and Givenchy hunty to have Candace and Erika meet? —Billy Nilles
ABC
Every Single Season of Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix
Grey’s Anatomy has been my entire life for the past month, and it was the happiest month of the year, maybe (not really). Sure, I cried a lot about things that normally wouldn’t make me cry, but those tears were cathartic. I needed them. Everyone should rapidly rewatch all 13 1/2 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy at least once in their lives. —Lauren Piester
What TV are you thankful for this holiday season? Sound off with your faves in the comments below!

Qatar Airways is a Big Short-Term Winner from Monarch’s Air’s Failure
Some 20 airlines, including Qatar Airways, have been used to transport Monarch Airlines passengers back to the UK. Monarch filed for insolvency earlier this month and its aircraft were returned to lessors. Bloomberg
Skift Take: This airlift is an impressive feat by the UK government. Kudos to the regulators for making sure everyone gets home.
— Brian Sumers
Rescue flights organized by the U.K. government following the collapse of Monarch Airlines Ltd. have brought a windfall for 20 carriers led by Qatar Airways and short-notice charter specialist Titan Airways.
A fleet of 34 aircraft has been established by Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority in order to return 110,000 tourists to the country over 14 days, with Qatar Air contributing 10 planes and Titan at least three. All told, the airlift is likely to cost around 60 million pounds ($79 million), according to the regulator.
EasyJet Plc and Thomas Cook Group Plc are also involved, together with carriers as diverse as Aigle Azur of France, Canadian leisure operator Air Transat, Turkey’s Freebird, Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Omni Air International, Latvia’s Smartlynx and El Al and Arkia of Israel, the CAA said. Among the aircraft deployed is a Boeing Co. 747 jumbo from Spain’s Wamos Air.
Travelers don’t need to cut short their vacation, with flights corresponding as closely as possible to advertised timetables. While Britain is bankrolling the repatriation effort, much of the expense will be clawed back from the ATOL protection scheme, a form of industry-funded insurance against holiday-company collapses, and from bank card providers which would otherwise be liable for the cost of replacement flights booked by passengers.
Qatar Boost
The ad hoc contract brings a much-needed boost for Qatar Air, which has had to ground or redeploy part of its Airbus SE A320 short-haul fleet amid restrictions on flights tied to a Saudi Arabian-led blockade of its home state. British Airways, in which Qatar owns a 20 percent stake, is operating the aircraft, having used nine of the jets in July during a cabin-crew strike strike.
Titan, based at London Stansted airport, is Britain’s biggest emergency charter provider, with at least two planes on standby for deployment within 60 minutes of a request being received. Its contribution to the Monarch relief effort includes a Boeing 767 wide-body jet, as well the single-aisle 737 and 757.
The CAA’s temporary fleet is operating on wet-lease terms, meaning that planes are supplied with crews. The 35 A320-series jets that had been operated by Monarch, Britain’s fifth-biggest scheduled airline by passenger numbers, couldn’t be used because as soon as the Luton, England-based company went into administration the leased planes effectively reverted to their owners.
Flights from more than 30 airports will operate between Oct. 1 and 15, with Alicante on the Costa Blanca the largest focus, with 6,600 stranded passengers, followed by Malaga, Faro in Portugal, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife. Monarch’s exposure to west Mediterranean markets was partly to blame for its collapse, with prices slumping as capacity poured in after a spate of terrorist attacks in holiday destinations further east.
Monarch’s failure also affects 300,000 people who had booked future travel with the company.
Birmingham airport will be worst hit among Monarch’s five U.K. bases, with the carrier having ranked as its third-biggest operator with 12 percent of traffic, Moody’s Investors Service said in a note Thursday. The defunct carrier accounted for between 4 and 7 percent of passengers at London Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Leeds Bradford.

Overnight news
United States
GDP grew 2.1% YoY (Exp. 2.0%) from 1.9% in Q4. Despite the revision the economy grew just 1.6% in 2016, the weakest performance since 2011. Growth in consumer spending rose at a revised 3.5% rate (Prev: +3%). Domestic demand grew 3.4%, the fastest pace in two years.
Imports spiked 9% (Prev: +8.5%), the fastest rate since Q4 2014. Exports fell more than estimated. As such the trade deficit subtracted a revised 1.82 percentage points from growth (Prev: 1.70 percentage points). Businesses accumulated inventories at a revised rate of $49.6bn (Prev: $46.2bn). Business investment was revised to +1.3% (Prev: +4.5%). After-tax corporate profits spiked 22.3% YoY, the largest annualised gain in nearly five years. As a share of the overall economy, profits accounted for 9.2% of GDP, up from 7.8% a year ago.
Core PCE grew 1.3% QoQ (Exp. 1.2%). This is the inflation measure that the Fed is watching.
Personal consumption grew 3.5% (Exp. 3.0)
US President Donald Trump
Trump warned conservative congressional Republicans that he would work against them in the midterm elections next year if they don’t support his agenda. “The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast,” Trump tweeted. “We must fight them, & Dems, in 2018!”
Federal Reserve
Cleveland Federal Reserve President Loretta Mester said the US economy is on solid footing and any weakness in Q1 is just a bump in the road. “While growth in the first quarter may come in on the weak side, I think this largely reflects transitory factors and residual seasonality in the data.”
Mester forecast 2017 GDP growth to be above 2% and as such she believes “the conditions are in place for a sustained return over the next year or so to our symmetric goal of 2% inflation.”
Mester said that if the economy performs as she expects it will, the Fed should continue to raise interest rates. “My current assessment is that the pace of removal won’t call for an increase in the fed funds rate at each meeting, but it does mean more than the one-increase-per-year seen in the past two years. This upward policy path will help prolong the expansion, not curtail it.”
South Africa
South African President Jacob Zuma fired Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and eight other cabinet members in a high-stakes power play that may threaten his own presidency and risks the nation’s investment grade credit rating.
Gordhan was replaced by Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba, who has no financial or business experience, while lawmaker Sfiso Buthelezi takes over from Mcebisi Jonas as deputy finance minister. The cabinet overhaul came in a late-night move that threatens to split the 105-year-old ruling African National Congress and trigger a revolt against the president. The rand extended losses, heading for its worst week in more than a year.
Foreign exchange
The USD was bid due to good data in the US – GDP, Core PCE – and the USD is resuming the trend move higher. Next target for DXY is the 100d MA at 101.164.
The EUR continued its drop following the Reuters report from yesterday saying that ECB doesn’t want to send the wrong message about stimulus being removed too early and German inflation came in lower than expected at 0.2% MoM (Exp. 0.4%) and 1.6% YoY (Exp. 1.8%). We are still in the middle of the range but the break of 1.0700 was important. We don’t see any bounce coming until 1.0620.
USDJPY is breaking back the 111.75 resistance level and if we manage to close above, we will be back in the range of 112/115.
The GBP was the only currency rallying against the USD on short-term stops following the trigger of Article 50.
Emerging markets: USDZAR exploded higher after the firing of the finance minister reaching the 100d MA at 13.48.77. It’s very hard to say where this pair could go if the political turmoil continues. There is now a risk of downgrade by rating agencies.
Foreign exchange volatilities
The market still wants to sell USD gamma because the only thing coming in terms of data is the nonfarm payrolls and then it will be Easter holidays. I would guess that if the USD rally continues for one or two more days, the market will start chasing up the volatilities.
There is a large strike today in USDJPY at 111.50 for $1bn.
Rates
UST were under pressure through most of session, triggered by upwards GDP revisions and gains in oil which lifted inflation expectations; 5s30s steepened as much as 1.6 basis points on the session, the widest jump since the March Federal open Market Committee decision
Bunds futures rallied Thursday, boosted by soft German CPI prints
Commodities
Equities
US indices were up in the region of 0.3%, lifted by oil prices, which managed to close back above $50/b. US financials also lifted the index with strong performances overnight.
European markets finished mixed with strong gains on the Dax and CAC 40 as they rose more than 0.4%. The Dax is now 150 points or 1.2% away from its high in April 2016. The FTSE 100 closed flat and lost 0.06%.
Lululemon reported fourth-quarter and fiscal 2016 earnings and its $1 EPS came in below consensus expectations. Lululemon also forecast disappointing guidance related to a sluggish first quarter. It dropped $15.54 or or 23% to $50.76, its lowest level since early 2016.
ConocoPhillips soared 8.8% and closed at $50 after agreeing to sell a large portion of its Canadian assets to Cenovus Energy (CVE). ConocoPhillips broke its resistance trend line from December 2016 and we see upwards momentum continuing. CVE meanwhile closed 13.7% lower on the purchase.
