More Thriller Bark thoughts (episodes 366-367):
Oars is so stupid I love him
Lola is the fucking GOAT she's a girl's girl (...warthog...?) and an absolute homie and for a story that forgets to write women very well half the time (I love you Oda but please give Nami a personality more than once every fifty episodes) this was one of the best girl power women supporting women moment I've maybe ever seen in media
I need to stop saying "Ki-shi-shi-shi" out loud after midnight in a shared household whoops
Gecko Moria is the worst fuckin shape to ever do it
The straw hats powering up to fight Oars is brilliant
I said it in its own post but it's still true: Perona would be the biggest fnaf girlie if she knew about it
Is Franky's sole purpose in the crew to add magical girl transformations?
"Don't ever ask me to dock with you again" ROBIN THAT IS YOUR MAN PLS DON'T BREAK HIS HEART (and yes I watch in dub do not complain about this)
Brook, to a bag of salt in the "salt is bad" island: "I have to wonder why they even keep this stuff"
Chopper learned to call out Franky's moves with him I can't he's too cute T-T
Sanji Naruto running while the sfx go whooooooshhhh
Sanji: Fall, damn you, fall!!!!! Zoro: Your face is about to get introduced to the ground. Franky: C'mon!! Fall down!! :D
Oh fuck me gently with a chainsaw. He's here. Shit's about to go down. :|
...okay actually it broke the "oh no this is Bad" immersion a little to have Kuma carrying..... a bible? I'm realizing I don't actually know much about him beyond Bad Things Are Gonna Happen To Zoro Soon.
Zoro blushing from embarrassment after being made a part of the Franky... robot... thing:

“You asshole.” He digs the spoon back into the broth, nearly spilling it himself. “It’s always—fucking—dignity this and honor that.” Sanji lets go of the bowl to grab Zoro by the chin and jerks his head around to face him. Zoro’s eyes widen in shock, and one hand twitches up, but for once, he’s not fast enough.
“Why don’t you prioritize—” Sanji shoves the spoonful of broth into his barely-open mouth, and later, he’ll feel bad about the way the utensil knocks against his teeth. “—staying alive for once?!”

a little zosan-flavored (or not! your choice whether to read into the subtext or not) oneshot based heavily on this post by @darkdumbass, which has been living rent-free in my dome for literal years months (feels like years but probably not years)
i hope i did your vision justice! that comic means a lot to me :3

I just realized Usopp could have beaten Kuma back on Thriller Bark if he just remembered he had an impact dial in his pocket

anybody else find it messed up that everybody on Thriller Bark knows Hildon but also treats him badly most of the time? like everyone addresses him by his name, then bullies him
Hogback:
asks Hildon what's wrong when he flies in. since Hildon is the one who went to go fetch Perona for SZ-900's awakening, he was probably sent to go get Hogback, too. Hogback knows Hildon is just the messenger.
and yet, when Hildon tells Hogback about Absalom's request for the wedding...
Tumblr media
that doesn't look comfortable.
oh also this made Hildon fall over as soon as Hogback was done screaming in his face
Tumblr media
but we all know Hogback's not very nice. nothing new here.
Absalom:
okay, yes, Hildon freaked out and called him a perv after the accident, and that's why Absalom blasted him with the cannon in his sleeve... except Absalom's entire army was doing the same thing earlier and all he did was tell them to shut up. this is nothing new for him, so why blast Hildon for it??
Absalom literally called Hildon by his name just to get him to turn around so he could blast him in the face.
As Hildon said himself, "That was mean."
Moria:
... honestly the more harmless one here. you know there's a problem when the guy who personally removes people's shadows is the nicest guy to the messenger... by comparison. yeah, he told Hildon to go deal with Oars/the island changing course by himself, but Moria always makes someone else do the work. he wasn't going out of his way to trouble Hildon, unlike a certain lion-faced clear man-
the only possible meanness here is actually speculative. as soon as he told Hildon to go deal with it by himself, he sped up so Hildon would get left behind. a bit rude, but, again, not out of the ordinary for Moria. he probably didn't know Luffy was gonna smack Hildon over the treeline(when the trees are almost as tall as 22-foot-tall Moria), bc. how would he know that.
Those generals who told Hildon to shut up + called him a coward for warning them not to oppose Oars when they literally had an army of generals that Oars defeated laying on the ground in front of them:
... self-explanatory.
but yeah Perona is the only one who didn't really say/do anything mean to Hildon. Moria raised her right, ig.

sometimes i think about how sanji hurt his leg saving zoro during thriller bark and when he found zoro after getting knocked out and probably thinking zoro was fuckin dead he had to carry zoro back to the crew probably not even sure if zoro was still breathing meanwhile on his fucked up enough leg the whole way. they make me so ill i cant stand them. and then the crew seeing how absolutely Distraught sanji was when he got back with zoro. like sanji and zoro have the ''nothing happened'' with each other about kuma but what about the crew seeing how sanji reacted to bringing a pretty much fatally wounded zoro back to them probably an absolute mess himself in a panic thinking zoro was moments from dying . bye

One Piece episode 345 parts that made me laugh:
- the bride hippo 😭😭
- coward duo being the best duo
- the dog with sanji’s morals
- robin suggesting that the others have been strangled and that’s why they can’t call for help
- “when did we last see zoro?”

And when OPLA calls back to Zeff telling the crew to read stories to Zoro so he can hear their voices and recover faster, by having Sanji sit by his bedside on Thriller Bark and read him a book about the All Blue. What will you do then?

I'll never get over the implications of zoro sacrificing himself for luffy and the full scope of that.
Like
It's WILD.
Cause Luffy -- he's unconscious. He doesn't even know Kuma was there. And we'd never met Kuma till he shows up after luffy has already stretched himself to his absolute limit and passed out to recover in the belief he and everyone was safe.
Then we have Zoro, who flat out told Luffy, if he gets in the way of his dreams, he'll force Luffy to commit hara kiri, which according to Google, is ritual suicide by disembowelment with a sword. It was formerly practiced in Japan by samurai as an honorable alternative to disgrace or execution. That's the stipulation he joins the crew with.
And like, yeah, after Mihawk slices him and tells him to live, to get stronger, so that one day Zoro may surpass him, Zoro doesny really acknowledged that. Instead, his only response is to pick up Wado Ichimonji, the sword of his long dead friend and of which he made his inital vow of becoming the world's greatest swordsman, to carry on kunia's dream in her honor, Zoro then proceeds to swear to never lose again because it's be embarrassing for Luffy as Pirate King.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this whole scene is wild as well, because mans was basically on deaths door and all he could think about was how it'd disgrace luffy is he lost again. Like???
But this scene, it makes it apparent that Zoro's dream isn't just for himself and Kunia, it's shared by Luffy now as well.
Which, we know Luffy. Every crew members dream is a dream Luffy takes on as personally as his own. He shoulders those dreams and the weight of making them a reality as seriously as his own dream of becoming king of the pirates. Their dreams are Luffy's now too.
This is different than that tho. Because while the dream was shouldered by Luffy, it was still for Zoro's own like... fullflillment? Idk how to convey it. It was still wholy Zoro's, it belonged to Zoro. But by saying it'd be embarrassing for Luffy, or a disappointment, for Zoro to lose again before he becomes world's greatest swordsman-- it's now theirs in a way it wasn't. He's not JUST becoming the world's greatest swordsman, he's becoming the world's greatest swordsman because it's what Luffy deserves. He's becoming the world's greatest swordsman because Luffy's gonna be King of the Pirates and for Zoro to give him anything less than the world's greatest swordsman is a disappointment.
But that's still -- becoming the world's greatest swordsman is still his... the most important thing to him. He just has another reason besides Kunia and himself now. But you still don't get the sense that like... I dont think the zoro who loses to mihawk would be willing to sacrifice himself on the way zoro on thriller bark did.
Because while Zoro has never been afraid of dying, that was because he'd rather die trying to become the world's greatest swordsman then to not have tried at all. It's a mindset he shares with Luffy. This all or nothing mentality, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neither of them have ever been afraid of dying as long as it's in pursuit of their dream.
But in Thriller Bark, he's not dying in pursuit of his dream. When he offers his head in exchange for Luffy's, he's effectively saying goodbye at ever achieving it, actually.
And he knows that, and you can see it jn the way he lays his swords down, because what use does he have for them if he's dead?
Kuma even says it here, "You have such an ambition, and yet you're saying that you're willing to take his man's place?"
Tumblr media
He's not just offering his life in exchange for Luffy's, it's his dream he's exchanging too.
In doing this, it's made known that Luffy now holds more importance over Zoro's life, his swords, and his dreams.
Because this act, this sacrifice he makes, him dying in this way, isn't in service of dream and ambition, it's in service to his captain and king.
And idk how we're meant to be normal about this.

Can y'all imagine if Zoro told Luffy that Sanji asked him to kill him after the big fight, if need be?
Of course then Sanji would tell Luffy about what Zoro did in Thriller Bark...
Mutually assured destruction (where 'destruction' means getting loved and told you're loved so much and so hard you die from it anyway)
