the beginning of a new year and recent news around some of the big idol companies, such as gold star media’s tax evasion investigation and the announcement of a new ceo for dimensions entertainment have idols and their companies in the news more than ever. as eager as companies are to stake a claim to 2023 for their idols, certain media companies are eager to report on what’s going on under the veil, especially exclusive now that their loyalties are called into question with at least one of today seoul’s major stories seemingly having merit. each muse may claim one free exclusive publicity or scandal article during either the first or second quarter of the year. denote ‘schedule free article’ in the discounts portion of the form when claiming. note: please remember scandals must be approved by the admin before submitting a scandal article claim.

titan’s ANNIVERSARY is january 6. the base culture complex will be hosting special events from january 6 to january 8, including a special edition selection of titan-themed treats and drinks and, on january 6, a special music video marathon in the theater for fans lucky enough to get tickets. the titan members will make a special appearance at the end of the music video marathon to greet and thank fans. on the spot, they’ll do a special a capella performance of “universe” at fan request that gains some minor attention on social media for their widely acknowledged vocal skills.

in january, the members will do filming for a YOUTUBE VARIETY CONTENT where each member is tasked to give a powerpoint presentation to the other members on the story of their lives and they will be graded by the other members (example). this will be released on january 24, right after the lunar new year.

titan are the first-up artists for the homebase x base music FM202.3 PROJECT. they’re informed of the details of the project and given their single for it in early january so that they can record it by mid-january. they will learn the choreography to the demo so that they have time to prepare it for the “drink it” music video filming in late january.

with a JAPANESE RELEASE approaching in march, titan will spend the quarter in preparation mode. they’ll attend a meeting to hear the demos and go over the album concept for their japanese comeback for the first time in early january, followed by studio time to record the tracks over the final two weeks of january. choreography and other visual elements, such as photo shoots and fittings will take place in february for breaking dawn, leading up to filming the music video at the end of the month. they’ll promote “breaking dawn” on tv asahi break out on march 22, but the performance will be filmed in seoul.

a KOREAN COMEBACK is also internally confirmed for may, so the titan members will go into COMEBACK PREPARATIONS for that as soon as they’re finished with their japanese release preparations. meetings with the agency regarding album plans will be scattered throughout the first week of march and they will go back into the studio to record for the maverick single album in the final week of march.

lily will have PROMOTIONS for their eung eung comeback starting january 2nd. bc has officially dubbed lily the originators of their own ‘lily crush’ concept that is a response to the turn in trend away from the more pure and innocent sound lily debuted with while still keeping the group’s signature charms. the comeback is generally received well by music critics and earns a handful of music show wins, but it underperforms a bit based on the company’s expectations commercially, despite an early year “empty house”. they’re still well-loved by the public, increasingly so as a legacy act, though, and online communities seem to be the only ones really caught up on the comeback’s chart performance.

about a week after wrapping music show stages with a final performance on mcountdown on february 2nd, the members of lily will be headed to the airport to fly out to tokyo for the japanese dates of their pink collection: red & white CONCERT, held on february 11th and february 12th.

in march, the members will serve as bc entertainment’s representatives for the test run rollout of the homebase app’s new livestreaming and video-on-demand features. for this test run, each member of lily will create their own thirty minute to an hour weekly individual LIVESTREAM SHOW based on a certain subject (ex. painting, make-up, eating, etc.), which they will pitch to lily’s team with a plan for at least two instances of the livestream by the end of february. this live shows will begin on the homebase app in march.

additionally, lily is also the second group slated to release a song through homebase x base music’s FM202.3 PROJECT, at the beginning of the next quarter. their song, which will be recorded in february, is more of a throwback to years of lily past in sound and the music video, to be filmed in mid-march, and lyrics are catered to thanking and celebrating their loyal fans.

cloud’s new contract with bc entertainment officially begins at the beginning of this year, with all contracts re-signed by the end of last year.

in late february, they’ll also have meetings to mark the beginning COMEBACK PREPARATIONS for their next comeback in june. at this time, they’ll receive demos to learn, but their return from the end of their tour in mid-march is when they’ll start to record songs.

with the members all in their twenties now and in the latter halves of their first contract with bc, bc entertainment has been planning an image evolution for them with a gradual transition from the colorpop candy-sweetness they’ve risen to prominence for to a more high teen earcandy image and sound. the waters have already been tested, particularly with styling, but 2023 holds a number of key steps for the image evolution that will be outlined to candy in an early january meeting.

at the same meeting, they will go over concepts and demos for their spring comeback. COMEBACK PREPARATIONS commence following the meeting. studio recording is to be finished by early february, and from there, performance and visual elements such as choreography and album jacket and teaser photo shoots become the focus for the rest of the quarter. “fancy”’s music video will be filmed in late march.

in january, candy will also film a series of VIDEO CONTENTS called “candy signal” where the members are paired up and tested on how well they know and can predict the other member. (note: muns may choose partners.) the videos will be released in february around valentine’s day to show off member chemistry to fans.

to lineup contents for their brand ambassador roles, candy will film COMMERCIALS for pocari sweat and estee lauder in january and february respectively. they’ll do a SHOOT for the cover of allure korea’s may issue in late march.

candy will embark on a tour following their comeback next quarter, so in february and march, they will have some CONCERT FITTINGS for potential stage outfits and vcr outfits to attend.

having earned a GRAMMY nomination in the best pop/duo performance category, polaris will fly out to los angeles via private jet right after the base awards after party in order to perform the song at the ceremony on february 5. though they don’t take home the win, the nomination and performance themselves keep polaris in the media headlines throughout the quarter.

upon their return to seoul, the group is met with the news of a confirmed comeback song for may in “butter”. it’s another english song, but dimensions is still sorting through songs for a korean-language comeback later in the year. the new year also means new ads and brand ambassador duties continue, namely with filming COMMERCIALS. in january, the group will film commercials for four different fila campaigns. in march for bodyfriend, hyundai, and also for kloud beer, which they’ve been signed on as ambassadors for starting this year. the vocal line (main vocal and both lead vocals) will record a cover of x ambassador’s “jungle” in january to be used as the soundtrack to a coca-cola commercial. the full group will record a cf song for hyundai the same month, which will also get a ‘music video’ starring the members filmed around the same time.

quantumphase will start off the year with a meeting regarding their march release of a JAPANESE ALBUM. the album features two original japanese songs and japanese versions of many of their recently released songs. these tracks will all need to be recorded in january so that the album can be ready for release on march 22. the album will be released without any major overseas promotions in its first few weeks so that they can focus on activities in korea.

with their next korean mini-album recorded in its entirety as of the end of last year, quantumphase moves immediately into long practice hours of their performances for the comeback to live up to their reputation as great performers. the single’s music video and other visual materials will be shot in early february. in addition to the single’s mv, a special video will also be filmed for staged b-side “celebrate”. they will hold their COMEBACK press showcase on february 27, the mini-album’s release day. in addition to music show stages, promotions for the album will include a video recording for studio choom’s be original series.

arcadia wraps a busy awards season where they’ve found themselves the most in-demand of their careers. they’re given some time in february for a vacation as a congratulations on a job well done in 2022.

as soon as they’re back in march, they’re back to schedules, namely filming for new commercials for new brand deals. commercials for both LOTTE TAMS ZERO and two commercials for MLB KOREA will be shot in the month of march.

though it hasn’t been announced yet, the members also get the news that they’ll be performing a special stage at the second weekend of coachella in april. as such, they will be in rehearsals for THEIR PERFORMANCE throughout march. they will premiere a new song, an all-english track called “LIFE’S TOO SHORT” at coachella as well, so they will need to have the song recorded by the end of the march.

at the very end of march, arcadia will have a mini-album comeback confirmed for july and they will be given the track list demos to prepare to record the rest of the songs next month.

to celebrate the new year and the end of “windflower” promotions, the members of selene will come together on january 2 to film a TIPSY LIVE for their youtube channel. the members will eat, talk, and drink, and at the end they’ll sing “windflower”. it’s a type of video they’ve done a few times before, and fans always love it, so their team decided it was time for another.

their next japanese, their windflower single album releases in february 8, but preparations for it were fully completed last year, so further work for the release isn’t needed.

the end of their 4 seasons, 4 colors project quickly approaches with the end of winter, so they’ll meet to go over the album at the very beginning of january, as soon as windflower promotions come to a close, and will be doing studio recordings of songs from mid-january to late january. that will give them the month of february and early march to practice their stages and complete visual shoots, including their music video shoot in late february. they make their COMEBACK on march 16. promotions will include music shows as always, as well as a dance video with 1 million dance studio, due to the greater emphasis on dance for this comeback track compared to the prior ones.

selene will hold the seoul dates of their 4seasons f/w concert at the beginning of next quarter, so the members will be undergoing CONCERT PREPARATIONS as well. in addition to the full group songs on the set list, each member will get a fifteen to twenty-five minute solo performance segment. studio recordings for the JAPANESE SINGLE ALBUM version of their upcoming comeback will be done around the same time as the korean versions in preparation for the japanese release shortly after the korean.

Rajery - “Jijy” Resting Place of the Mists: New Valiha and Marovany Music From Madagascar 1996 Valiha Music / Folk Music / World Music

I’m going to do something a bit different with today’s post and write about music that hardly any of us are ever exposed to. For whatever reasons, African music doesn’t get much attention in North America or Europe and that’s a shame. Valiha music is a special brand of African folk music that is mainly played (perhaps exclusively) in Madagascar. The back cover from Shanachie’s valiha and marovany (a similar instrument to the valiha) compilation, Resting Place of the Mists, describes the sounds of these instruments: “The valiha is aptly called the national instrument of Madagascar. Along with its cousin the marovany, its ethereal sound epitomizes the delicacy and exotic allure of Madagascar.”

To get a bit more technical, the valiha is a cylindrical instrument, named after a species of local bamboo that is native to Madagascar. Wrapped around the bamboo are a series of vertical strings. According to Wikipedia, the amount of strings typically ranges from 21 to 24. The strings are often made of bicycle brake cable, but guitar and piano strings have been known to be used by more serious players. Valihas also appear to vary in length and girth.

Here’s an example of what one looks like:

The plucking initially only caused his crippled hand to bleed, but with continued practice, he managed to toughen the skin to a point that allowed him to coax sound out of the instrument. The handicap also led him to take a different approach to the instrument, using his nub to strum and playing swift, delicate melodies with his other hand.

In 1996, a Rajery instrumental called "Jijy" appeared on Resting Place of the Mists. Full disclosure, I'm not sure if this is an original recording or not, because another version of "Jijy," which is a minute longer than the version I'm writing about, appeared on a French world music compilation in 1988. It's possible that the fine folks at Shanachie cut a minute out of that 1988 version (though I wouldn't really understand why), but this could also just be a completely different recording. I dunno.

Anyway, "Jijy" is magnificent. I can't locate any specific liner notes, but I feel like if Rajery was playing with anyone else, the other artists would have been credited in the album's track list. So, I can't say this with absolute confidence, but I'm thinking that every sound of the valiha on this song comes courtesy of Rajery, and I don't think any mixing was involved either, which means that this man, who possesses a single hand and a fingerless nub, is able to play his valiha in such a way that it sounds like there's actually two, sometimes three people, playing at once. Incredible.

And even if that's bull and there actually are other valiha players on this session, "Jijy" is still a very interesting piece of music. Multiple melodies occur simultaneously at all times and they clash, intersect, or complement each other. Sometimes one melody clearly leads while the other accompanies (or others accompany), and sometimes there's no clear-cut lead. The melodies are also constantly changing. Sometimes they're short and might repeat a handful of times, like towards the end of the song, but Rajery often discards of them pretty quickly and moves on to something new.

Breathtaking Malagasy folk music. The valiha is an amazing instrument and Rajery is so freaking good at playing it. He's been a known entity among world music aficionados for years, but he still deserves way more attention than he's received.

Not so long, the skin industry was blooming and games such as CS:GO and Dota 2 gained more and more popularity because people wanted to gamble or trade-up their skins for fun or simply for having something unique. Below you can find more information about what happened to the skin industry and how is it looking today.

History of Skins

The entire skin industry was propelled by CS:GO and “The Arms Deal Update” back in late 2013.This marked an era and sites were starting to appear on a daily basis. The thing is, everyone worked around Steam API and this simply was not a long term solution for any of these sites.

Alongside trading and gambling sites, we have also seen people trying to create unique inventories for themselves. I remember that there was one guy that wanted the entire “blue”inventory for himself. He pushed things even further as he grabbed an AK-47 Case Hardened(blue gem) for several thousand dollars. On top of that, he also bought himself a Karambit Case Hardened(blue gem) for over 30,000$.

The First Skin Business - Trading & Gambling

In this section of the article, we will talk about two essential parts of skin industry, trading and gambling. Below, you will be able to find two sites that started the avalanche called the skin industry. You will also be able to learn what happened to these sites.

Let’s start things off with the trading industry. There are actually two sites that we can talk about.Even though one of them was mostly used for gambling, you could still trade skins via Steam trade offers without any fees or charges.

CSGOLounge

Back in 2014, this site was bread and butter for everyone who wanted to either gamble or trade-up their existing skins. We all used CSGOLounge and the entire scene loved it. Even though they were offering very poor betting odds/percentages, we simply had to take it as we did not have an alternative.

There were no special bets for matches offered and coverage was quite insane. You could even find tier 3 tournaments, but the odds/percentages shuffled there like insane because not a lot of money was coming into these bets hence why you were able to turn things upside down with a $50 bet.

Alongside CSGO betting, you could also trade your skins. Even though this marketplace was not used that much, I still believe that it set the pillars for other sites such as OPSkins and BitSkins.

As mentioned above, CSGOLounge’s marketplace was available for everyone and it was free of charge. However, it was filled with scammers and this is the main reason why a lot of people avoided using this platform as a trading place for themselves.

OPSkins

Let’s face it, no one here wants to sell their skins for Steam wallet funds because this type of currency is useless for us. Even though there are some people that do not mind having Steam wallet funds available, I simply believe that the majority of us wanted real money for our skins.

This is where OPSkins come into play. They took the entire trading scene by storm. Even though you could not directly trade skins(player-to-player), you could simply sell the skins you wanted and buy new ones for yourself, as simple as that.

Furthermore, OPSkins always had great deals. For example, a lot of people wanted to get rid of their skins really fast hence why they would put them on insane discounts which varied from 33%-50%. From my perspective, these are insane numbers, especially because you can get the skins you want for a cheaper price once compared to the Steam market.

However, OPSkins decided to push things a bit too far and they paid the price for it. Valve banned a lot of their bots and they were simply forced out of business.

Skin Gambling - Rise & Fall

Let’s talk stats. The skin gambling industry, while in its peak was worth well over $5 billion. These are insane numbers if you ask me and you can probably figure out that Valve simply had to do something about it.

There were also quite a lot of scandals involving “PhantomL0rd” and “TmarTn”. Both guys did not disclose that they are a shareholder or even an owner of skin gambling sites they won money on. You can probably imagine that they rigged almost all of their games just to make them win and influence their viewers to come and join this site and easily win money.

Valve hand was forced as lawsuits started to pile up. To be honest, the skin gambling and trading industry was a bubble that was ready to blow up. After announcing cease and desist letters to the most popular skin gambling sites on the market, Valve was able to stop skin gambling in its tracks.

However, site owners once again found a way to work around the Steam API system and we have seen more and more gambling sites on the market. Once again Valve had to do something. This time around, Valve worked hard to fix their Steam API and they were finally able to put a stop on the skin gambling industry.

After introducing 14 days hold period for recently traded skins, Valve killed off the remaining sites that were still somehow able to provide skin gambling via Steam.

What Are the Most Popular Skins?

There is no denying that there are quite a few CSGO skins that are really unique and one of a kind. However, in 2016 there were quite a few skins that were considered rare. Alongside them being rare, they would have a heavy price tag on themselves as well.

On the other hand, Butterfly Tiger Tooth and Fade are two cheaper options for you. You can get them roughly for the same price of $600. These two skins as well will look very good once you start spinning them around your wrist.

Benefits of Having CSGO Skins?

Some will say that there are no benefits of having skins in your inventory. However, I would disagree. If you acquire a very good looking skin, your gameplay will definitely improve.

Your movement will improve and you will have a lot more confidence to take fights that you would not usually take.

Furthermore, if you like to brag, CSGO skins are the best way to do it. There are people with insane inventories that simply enjoy collecting those skins. Who knows, maybe you will find your happiness in being a CSGO skin collector.

All in all, having CSGO skins in your inventory will surely benefit you. Your aim will improve, you will move like a madman around the map, and overall, your CSGO experience will be much better. This is why I would advise you get a couple of skins and try it out yourself.

When Gertrude Lawrence, as played by Julie Andrews, in Star! first arrives in America, a reporter asks her what she “most wants to see?” “Good notices, dear!” is her droll reply. Viewed in retrospect, it is a bitterly ironic exchange because American reviews of Star! were far from good. In fact, critical drubbing of the film was so pronounced it became a national news story unto itself. “Critics Belt Julie Andrews For Her Role in Star!” trumpeted a widely syndicated article published barely weeks after the film’s New York premiere. “Julie Andrews...has been all but dismembered by the critics for her performance as Gertrude Lawrence in Star!,” it proclaimed, with many reviewers taking “personal shots at her talent” (Scott: 4B).

Even allowing for journalistic hyperbole –– not all the film’s reviews were outright pans –– there is no denying that critical response to Star! in the United States was markedly antagonistic –– certainly, in comparison to the film’s international reception which, as profiled in earlier posts, was largely positive, even glowing. In point of fact, choice quotes from the film’s international raves were widely used in pre-release US advertising for Star! by a jubilant Twentieth Century-Fox convinced they had another Julie Andrews super-hit on their hands. “What happened to the film and the critics on the trip across the Atlantic God only knows,” a despondent Robert Wise would later bemoan (cited in Kennedy, 156).

North American reviews of Star! were not merely negative, they were characterised by a savagery that, even today, gives pause. Consider, for example, the following excerpts taken almost at random from print reviews across the breadth of the mainstream US press:

The Chicago-Tribune: A “2-hour and 45-minute, multimillion dollar Sleep-In…the highlight of which is the appearance of the closing credits” (Terry: 2-15). Newsweek: “Star! is not impossible to sit through but neither is a nice long funeral…The sets are tacky, the colour abysmal, the length––three hours and 10 minutes––unconscionable” (Morgenstern: 80). Time: “The production is a hollow, frantic caricature…The Character Assassination of Gertrude Lawrence as Performed by the Inmates of Madame Tussaud's” (“Cinema”: 124).

The Minneapolis Star: “Long stretches of Star! appear to have been developed in Listerine. Seldom has a movie been so anitiseptic and nasty...a singularly mean, catty, uncharitable film” (Altman: 9A).

Courier-Post: “Star! is like a hand-carved pure gold frame housing a black and white photograph of Harry S. Truman...In all its multi-coloured glory...it is pure glitter covering a dull, occasionally boring, almost three-hour long motion picture...that fails to live up to its advance reputation or its worth as a hard-ticket attraction (Petzold: 25). Detroit Free Press: “Like a fat, overdressed lady who lumbers around shooting off her big mouth, Star! is by turns offensive and boring” (Stark: 16-B). The Honolulu Advertiser: “A Lavishly Mounted Bore” (Harada: C6).

So hostile were many of these notices that more than one commentator has posited the presence of motivations beyond simple aesthetic evaluation. “Much of the harshness and seeming overkill” of American reviews of Star!,” argues Dennis Bingham (2010), “can be attributed to the intense animosity of the ‘film intelligentsia’ toward The Sound of Music and its immense success....[R]eviewers of Star! appear to have been lying in wait for the fat target of Andrews-Wise-Twentieth Century Fox to present itself” (275; see also Monaco: 133).

The Sound of Music had of course attracted its share of sneering reviews three years earlier but it had been able to secure ultimate vindication through record-breaking triumph at the box office. Star!, alas, would not follow suit with American audiences proving almost as unwelcoming to the film as American critics. From the outset, ticket sales for Star! were alarmingly sluggish. The film did fair business in its opening week or two in the major cities, largely on the back of advance ticket bookings, but “grosses immediately started plummeting during the weeks that followed” (Chaplin: 239). Many sessions played to well below capacity houses, especially at crucial weekend performances where tickets were priced at a premium (Canby: D1; Kennedy: 156; Stirling: 211). In fact, early receipts for Star! were so poor that Fox resorted to giving falsely inflated box office figures to Variety in a vain effort to paint a rosier picture of the property’s failing fortunes (“Revised Estimates”: 9).

It’s not difficult to understand the studio’s panic here. In 1968, Hollywood was a town in crisis. Sitting on the brink of one of the worst recessions to hit the film business since the 1930s, the American film industry was beset by massive economic instabilities and wholesale structural change (Cook: 71ff). The market for big roadshow family fare was oversaturated beyond sustainability and the complexion of American moviegoing was in radical flux (Thomas: 17). Small youth-oriented and iconoclastic social realist films like The Graduate (1967) Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and Easy Rider (1969) were the new order of the day and, almost overnight, splashy musicals and other big screen spectacles were deemed woefully out-of-fashion. Fox was especially susceptible to these volatile shifts as, more than any other studio, its production schedule was heavily invested in big roadshow product (”20th Century Has Big Film Backlog”: IV-10; Getze: III-14). The studio’s previous roadshow offering, Doctor Dolittle (1967), had been a crushing failure and, with several other expensive roadshow projects still in the pipeline, the tepid response to Star! created plenty of white-knuckles in the front office (Silverman: 126ff ).

In early-December, newly appointed Head of Sales and Marketing at Fox, Peter S. Myers –– one of a raft of executive staffing changes occasioned by the industrial turmoil at the studio –– decided to abandon the exclusive metropolitan roadshow strategy for Star! and hastily released the film to 34 additional theatres in the last two weeks of December (“‘Star!’ Spreading Out”: 3). A new advertising campaign was “rushed through for Star!’s...out-of-town dates” and was also used to “replace current promo spots” in big city venues where the film was “already playing” (“Revised Estimates”: 9). The revised campaign which was orchestrated by Myers trialed a range of disparate marketing approaches in a bid to maximise the film’s reach with adverts that framed Star! as everything from a madcap comic romp à la Thoroughly Modern Millie to a dark romantic female melodrama starring “a different kind of Julie Andrews”. At the same time, Myers printed more than 20,000 brochures with a special endorsement of the film from the President of the MPAA applauding the film as wholesome family entertainment which were sent to “elected motion picture councils, educators, librarians, editors, clergy, organisational and community leaders, civic officials and women’s clubs” (“‘Star!’ Receives”: 3).

Not surprisingly, these wildly disjunctive efforts failed to drum up substantial interest and, by January 1969, reports both inside and outside the industry were murmuring that Fox had another Dolittle-sized “flop” on its hands (Edmands: 11; Thomas: 17). Fearing the problem might be the film’s 3-hour running time, the studio ordered 20 minutes of cuts to Star!, much to director Robert Wise’s chagrin (Edwards: 74; Kennedy: 155). Worse still, rather than recall the prints for professional re-editing, Fox simply issued a list of suggested cuts to exhibitors to be implemented by theatre staff, resulting in widespread confusion, jarring jumps, and mangled prints (Edwards: 75).*

With Star! struggling at first-run theatres across the nation –– and in some cases closing prematurely after only a few weeks –– Fox pushed the film into general release at the start of April with continuous screenings at so-called “grind” houses –– second and third-run theatres and drive-ins. The general release was accompanied by yet another revised advertising campaign that promised moviegoers “Unbelievable Julie...at Regular Prices!” Even with the lure of discounted tickets, Star! failed to secure additional traction and, by June, it was estimated the film had totalled less than $3 million in domestic ticket sales against a $14 million budget (Holston, 220).

By this stage, newspapers were openly declaring Star! “a big fat failure at the box office...a loser all over the country” (Kelly: 4-B). In a highly publicised interview first printed in The Los Angeles Times in June, Richard Zanuck –– Head of Production at Fox and son of legendary studio chief, Daryl –– called Star! “our Edsel”, after the infamous Ford car marque that bombed so spectacularly it became popular shorthand for an extreme marketing flop. Star!, Zanuck lamented is “a failure of enormous proportions” that “has me staying up at nights.” “You’re bound to get the shakes when a slick, first-class Julie Andrews picture flops and it makes us very nervous,” he exclaimed, “There are no guarantees anymore. Star! is not a great picture but it’s not so bad as to do the rockbottom business it’s been doing. Hopefully, we’ll learn from it. So far we’ve learned that no one is infallible –– not Julie, not Bob Wise and not the studio.” (Warga: 22).

As if to prove just how lumberingly fallible the studio could still be, Fox gambled on a last ditch salvage effort born of sheer and utter desperation. On July 1, the studio officially withdrew Star! from American distribution after the film had played only 1,000 of its scheduled 8,000 engagements ("20th Withdraws”: 3). In what was described as “another of the bold distribution ideas” masterminded by Peter S. Myers, it announced Star! would undergo "an arduous reconstruction process” in which the film’s running time would be edited down by a full third with several plot strands and musical numbers excised. The revised film would then be re-released later in the year under a new title (Heffernan: 16). “Basically, the idea is to make a new pic out of an old one,” Myers explained, adding that the studio’s research department was doing widespread “testing to find the right audience for the pic” and to choose the right title, with Gertie Was a Lady deemed “the likeliest choice” ("20th Withdraws”: 3).

The idea of recutting a film and giving it a new identity for re-release was not entirely unprecedented in Hollywood history, but it had typically been reserved for minor B-grade properties and, even then, usually only after a hiatus of several years. Seldom had the strategy been trialed on such a high-profile film at the time of its original release. But such was the level of panic and irrational decision-making in Hollywood at the time. Not surprisingly, the film’s cast and crew were aghast but were powerless to do anything. Robert Wise remained diplomatically evasive in public press comments but, privately, he asked Fox to remove his production credit from the reissued version (Edwards: 75). Julie Andrews was more forthcoming: “I think [it] is terrible,” she said flatly, “I hope they will not try to fool the people into thinking it’s another movie..What went wrong with Star!? I don’t really know. It certainly wasn’t for lack of effort” (“‘Star!’ Tries Again”: 32).

As part of background testing for the re-release, Fox engaged the services of N.T. Fouriezos & Associates, a New York-based market research company specialising in media demographics. Their research indicated that Julie Andrews biggest fans were females aged between 12-17 and 30-49 who prized the star for her “warm” and “lovely” image and who most wanted to see Julie in a “happy, true to life musical” (”No More Sexy Songs”: 124). Undaunted by the fact that Star! was far from this kind of film, Fox set about refashioning a new image for the property that reflected the sunny feel-good musical that fans supposedly wanted. Gone was the initial alternative title of Gertie Was a Lady in favour of Those Were the Happy Times which offered a clearer evocation of heartwarming nostalgia. The theme of joyous uplift was further stressed in a chorus of advertising taglines that sounded for all the world like warmed-up leftovers from marketing for The Sound of Music:

When Everyone Was Singing a Happy Song... When a Girl Wasn’t Afraid to Show Her Heart... When All the World Was This Lady’s Stage... Those Were the Happy Times!

Fox even commissioned Howard Terpning, the celebrated artist who had designed the iconic key art for The Sound of Music, to create new graphics for the rechristened pic. The revised Terpning poster art featured a beaming long-haired Julie clutching a basket of flowers amidst a rainbow-coloured montage of gaily dancing couples, people riding bicycles, and even children playing leapfrog. Like a chirpy love-child of My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music, it did indeed appear to be the ideal Julie Andrews tunefest!

However, even with radical cutting, Star! was never going to fit easily into that kind of sugary mould. When Those Were the Happy Times (“formerly entitled STAR!”) was quietly released to theatres on 1 October, 1969 –– Julie Andrews’s birthday, ironically –– it caused nothing so much as head-shaking derision. Most papers refused to review it –– “I’m not going back to see the watered down version,” one critic declared, “I wasn’t happy with Star! and there’s no reason to expect a happier ending with Those Were the Happy Times” (Wedman: 29) –– and the few that did remained wholly unimpressed.

“Those Were the Happy Times [is] one of those musicals you’d really like to see make it, but one of those that couldn’t go no matter what was done ––including changing the name...There are even times, due to editing after changing the name probably, that you forget [it] is a musical because in one part at least 30 minutes lapse between two songs...and when the big productions come you get the feeling you’re watching a re-run of something akin to Esther Williams in Skirts Ahoy” (Perry: 20).

“The severest loss is the sense of style, which the Robert Wise-Saul Chaplin production once possessed....The original version [had] a well-crafted script and was so finely edited — even today some of the transitions are breathtaking in their execution — that one easily sees the gaping holes in plot and in style, due to the hacking-away in the editing room. The feeling for the times and the atmosphere of the first forty years of this century, which created the ambiance for the drama, has been truncated ruthlessly (Clein: 15).

Released principally to suburban and provincial theatres, probably on the assumption that audiences there wouldn’t have seen the original version, Those Were the Happy Times did worse business than Star! In Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the local newspaper reported that at the film’s “first big night...there were a total of 10 people in the theatre...: a ticket seller, a ticket taker, a manager, a popcorn girl, a projectionist, two Sheboyogan Press reviewers, and three (3) paying customers,” earning the theatre a grand total of “$1.05. Less expenses, of course” (”Sad Start”: 34). In Moberly, Missouri, the local theatre even took out a desperate advertisement in their paper that read:

“HELP –– HELP (A Notice from the 4th Street Cinema) The movie currently showing at the Cinema is titled Those Were the Happy Times –– What a joke! Nothing could be further from the truth. We had 4 people at the theatre on Wednesday night and 6 on Thursday and these are the “Saddest Times” we’ve ever seen. Where are all the people who want good family entertainment?” (4th Street Cinema: 5).

Fox’s injudicious gambit not only failed to pay off financially, it was a PR disaster that cemented public perception of Star! as an irredeemable failure and earned the film an unfair reputation for years to come as “an unmitigated disaster…synonymous with the word ‘bomb’” (Silverman, 131).

Notes:

* The only retrospective silver lining here is that, because these edits were made to release prints rather than the original negative of Star!, the latter remained safely intact in studio vaults, thus enabling the film’s latter-day rerelease in complete form. This serendipitous outcome would not be enjoyed by many other roadshow films of the era –– The Alamo (1960), Gypsy (1962), It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), Major Dundee (1965), etc. –– where original negatives were cut and excised material lost.
