“ sorry i’m late.“ she sighed, instantly plopping herself down in the chair across from her, bag dropping down at her feet. “ this new five year that i’m watching is a hellion, and got paste everywhere. “ she scrunched her nose, picking at the already chipped nail polish on her thumb. “ and of course they did that right before their mother got home so, of course i had to clean it up. “ she opened the menu in front of her, scanning over a few listed items. “ did you already order? i wouldn’t blame you if you did. “

“ you’re right, they definitely don’t know how to hold a conversation. especially when they only talk about water polo and their sports cars. “ she snorts, thinking back to the few preppy boys that she had talked to in the past. it never went past talking with them but, at least they were pretty to look at in the moment. “ you clearly aren’t just getting the mail. “ she rolls her eyes, leaning forward to set the now empty bottle of wine on the coffee table. “ well, it looks like i’m going to have to go wake up your parents and tell them what you’re up to. “ she smirks, standing up from her seat, her legs already feeling like jello as she stumbles forward only to catch herself before actually falling. “ might just have to yell for them instead. “
“they weren’t, but they don’t know how to hold a conversation… i feel like they’re talking to a mirror,” rolling her eyes recalling a handful of them being so vain and into themselves that it felt as if she wasn’t in the room. those were the type of people her mother wanted her to be with — the snotty type, which was what she hated the most. so she ventures out and sneaks out whenever she pleases. “it’s not sneaking out if i’m just walking outside to go grab the mail,” lacey states innocently shrugging her shoulders as she leans against the counter waiting for the other to tell her what she wanted. groans fell from her lips, “there’s no way in hell i’m telling my parents i drank the rest of the wine. screw you.”

she bit her tongue, choosing not to speak about her knowing him so well. she used to think that she knew him like the back of her hand but lately she wasn’t so sure. if she had known him so well then maybe this wouldn’t have happened, maybe they wouldn’t have went on their stupid little break and fucked up, maybe they’d be having a different conversation than they were now. stevie lets out a soft sigh, her gaze averting back down to her forgotten drink, not really wanting it anymore. she had half a mind of just handing it to him like she usually would when she was over it but, she didn’t know if that was allowed anymore given the circumstances. “ she’s not my friend anymore. “ she mutters, her voice softer than normal. she couldn’t bring herself to be friends with someone that would stab her in the back like that. her friend knew how much she cared for him, and she knew that she wanted to be with him again but, she clearly wanted to sabotage those chances. “ i know and i appreciate you for telling me, and being truthful about it. “ she turns her back to him for a moment, eyes darting towards the sky and then back down to her drink. without even thinking about it, she leans down and hands it to him, gaze lingering on his for a second too long before she looks away again. “ i just hate that it happened. “
" is that what i'm doing ? god, i guess you just know me so well, huh ? " shaking his head, his gaze shifts away from her to focus on the horizon ahead, the ink-black sky dotted with countless tiny pinpricks of light. maybe that's why it hurt so much, because she knew him so well, probably better than everyone he's ever allowed into his life. " oh yeah, me being at my friend's birthday ? what a coincidence. " rolling his dark hues to the back of his head, he throws the cigarette bud onto the ground and puts it out with his foot. " she's your best friend, and it's me you're mad at ? — she was the one throwing herself at me when she knew i was wasted and upset over our break. i mean i did tell you about it, didn't i ? i regretted it the second i woke up that morning, doesn't make it better but it's the truth."

“ seriously, harrington?! i could kill you. “ she’s scrambling to pick up the pack of smokes that were now floating in a puddle. the pack of smokes she had been nursing for weeks now that had become the source of helping her with the impending doom she had felt as of late. “ i needed these. “ she mutters, opening the pack, only to find one out of the five not soaked. “ next time warn me if you’re going to get distracted by the washed up prom queen, kay? “ // @crawlingforwardx sent a flower emoji for a randomized starter

she squealed as he lifted her off the ground, her arms instantly wrapping around his neck, trying his best to keep herself stable as well so that she didn’t fall to the ground. “ you’re going to drop me! “ she chuckled, her nose scrunched as her feet finally made it back down to the floor below, her arms still wrapped loosely around his neck as she looked up at him. “ hey, you know that i never break my promises. so, you know i’ll hold true to my word. “ in truth, she had broken promises before but, it was always those that she held with other people and never him. she had always been loyal in their friendship, and had never once strayed from breaking any sort of promise with him — no matter how dumb or juvenile it was. “ good, i’m glad you’re not jealous of this imaginary rich man. “ she rolled her eyes once more, head tilting to the side as her gaze lingered on his a second too long, almost getting a little lost in the moment as her fingers strayed from their spot around his neck to the back of his head, toying with his hair without even thinking about it. “ uh -– “ she shook her head, breaking herself out of whatever trance she seemed to be in. “ — there’s no dream guy either, joe. so, you don’t have to worry about that. “
"Yeah, yeah, joke around all you want," Joseph rolled his eyes, purposefully choosing to ignore the way those words made him feel. He didn't mind being her bodyguard, even if she probably didn't need him most of the time. But in those few moments when she did, he didn't want to even think about anyone else being there for her when it should've been him. When Stevie reached for his hand the young man obliged, letting himself be dragged to his feet. "Hey, that ain't fair!" Joseph was animatedly shaking his head, hands wrapping around her middle as he purposefully lifted her off the ground and twirled both of them in one place. Or, really, as much as he managed without swaying to the side. Those beers definitely weren't helping his coordination. "Thank you for the very generous promise... and I'll make good use of it." His eyes narrowed, watching her from so close; he could feel his fingers tingling, wanting to reach out and touch her face but he willed them to stay at her back. He tried looking away too. To no use. "Well, if you're sure that he's imaginary, then maybe I'm not jealous," the young man teased, eyebrow raising as he kept quiet for a second too long. Liking his lips, he let out a sigh. "Unless I should be careful about what you dream of too, huh?"

“ even if it were something that would’ve stained, it still would’ve been fine. “ she was a nanny after all, and spent a majority of her day getting juice and food spilled on her. she was kind of used to it at this point. she picks up a fresh napkin, and blots at the few water stains on the skirt of her dress, noting that you could barely tell that there was any water spilled on her with the pattern she was wearing. a soft chuckle falls from her lips at his small joke, not expecting anything less from him. “ it’s only slightly lame. “ she tilts her head, setting the napkins she had used on the side plate in front of her, setting that off to the side. “ but, the joke was slightly cute as well so, i wouldn’t worry too much about it. “
"i just feel so bad i talk with my hands a lot and i guess your water fell victim. i guess at least it's water not you know something that'll stain." he says as he wipes up the table. he smiles as she cleans herself up a bit relieved that she isn't upset. he hadn't been sure how this would go but he's happy she's not upset. "would it be so lame if i made some joke about you being sweet because water melts sugar and... you get what i mean."

“ looks like we had the same idea. “ she had every intention of spending the rest of her night alone, and if that happened to be spent in this ill lit bathroom in the middle of nowhere then so be it. with how late it was, she half expected not to run into anyone while she was in there but of course, he had to be the one to ruin her night of silence. she vaguely remembered his face from a few nights before when she had made a complete ass of herself but she was dealing with some things, and wasn’t in the mood to hear shitty music all throughout the night. a sigh drifts past her lips when the light bulb goes off above his head, eyes rolling as she leans forward to grab her pack of smokes off the counter, pulling out a fresh one and placing it between her lips. “ you ever think about playing better music? if you had done that, then i wouldn’t have been pounding on your cabin door that night. “ she lights the end of her cigarette and takes a long drag, head tilting back as she blows the smoke up towards the ceiling. “ that’s right, you were the one that mooned me. “ a subtle smirk tugs on the corner of her lips, as she lowers her head, and looks over at him, brow lifted in amusement. “ so, has anything bad happened to you since then? “ brows furrow when he mentions her boyfriend, or her latest ex — which had only been the new label for the past two hours but hey, who was counting? she pulls her gaze away from him once more, and flicks the ash onto the ground below her feet, shoulders lifting into a shrug. “ nope, he’s long gone. “ she takes another drag, dark hues flicking back over to him again. “ guess i can’t really sick him on you and your friends now, huh? “

" oh fuck um sorry i didn't know someone was in here. i am just - - i was hiding from someone and looking for a quiet place to smoke. " not realising that there had been someone in the bathroom and having thought this particular cabin was empty as his group of friends were partying in a few cabins down close by the lake. it clicked in his mind why the person's face seemed so familiar only for him to then grow immediately nervous and ashamed.
" oh shit. i know you. we flipped you off when you were banging on our door a few nights ago telling us to turn the music down or else you'll get your man on us. i was the one who mooned you and you told me to get fucked and that i had it coming. " he snickered finding that moment amusing causing that feeling of being nervous to be temporary. he rubbed the back of his neck as his smug expression was faint and disappeared only to then appear a little more reserved and stiff. " sorry, i shouldn't laugh. is your man still here? " unable to help but question out of curiosity.

“ it’s really not that hard to do something for yourself. “ okay, so maybe it was for other people but, stevie didn’t really have anyone in her life to answer to. she didn't have any children that were hers, she did have a significant other and she lived alone in a small flat in the middle of the city. all she had was herself so, it was quite easy for her to put herself first. “ maybe start out small and give yourself one day a month where you only do things for you? “ she shrugs, picking at the chipped nail polish on her nails. “ go to the spa, and go on a mini shopping spree for yourself — just once a month, you should be able to manage that. “
"You can say that again. I'm almost afraid to ask if you're talking from experience too? But that's the thing, I still haven't found a way to do that. How do I just do something for myself? If you have any ideas, by all means I'm all ears. Especially when the one who let me down this time is my own boss. This is the time I wish I didn't work at the hospital.

“ sometimes i wonder why i even still bother with this job. “ she knew why — it was the money, it was hard to pass up. and unlike medical school, it didn’t take up her life and she actually had a bit more free time than she would’ve if he continued with her schooling. “ you do? who’d you trade to make that happen? “ she quirked a brow, glancing up for a moment before looking back down at the menu in front of her. “ i’m not sure — what’s even good here? “
"No problem," she smiled, her lips curving up further in amusement at her explanation. "Rather you than me." At least when she was based on the paediatric wards, the children nearly always had a parent or guardian with them. "Not yet, I've got the whole afternoon off so I'm not in a rush." Unless her beeper went off, of course, but that could never be predicted. "What are you thinking?" she nodded to the menu.

“ i know — “ she sighed, teeth sinking into her bottom lip. “ — i guess i just wanted to make sure you were okay. “ she kept the phone to her ear, and turned to press her back against the counter, fingertips gripping onto the side. “ i meant it when i said that i still wanted to be friends, cody. "

her back was pressed against the mountain of couch pillows that she had set up for herself, while her legs rested comfortably on top of his lap. this was their usual comfort level, always close to one another while enjoying each other's company. she would occasionally look up at him, brows lifting every time their eyes met. she couldn’t help but feel her stomach flip every time but she never made it noticeable. they were always just strictly friends and she was fine with keeping it that way. she didn’t want to lose what they had over a silly little stomach flip. “ not every person ended up alone, joseph. “ she snorted, leaning over to grab her beer off the coffee table so she could take a swig. “ the little old lady ended up with her cat so, i mean, that’s something. “ she shrugged, settling back against the pillows. “ besides, some people find happiness in being alone so, maybe for some of the characters, ending up there was their happy ending. “ she finished off the rest of her beer, holding the bottle loosely in her hand. “ would you rather watch some ultra cheesy movie when the boy gets the girl instead? because i do have a few recommendations if interested. “ she teased, nudging him playfully with her foot. “

Joseph had almost finished his bottle of beer, but still felt no effect of it. His eyes were darting towards her, his best friend, for the duration of the whole movie and it was safe to say that he had missed the context of what they were watching a long time ago. It still amazed the young man, this idea of her being the only person sticking so long around him; if he said that at moments this didn’t scare him, it would be a lie. And he had fucked up a lot of times too, yet they always found their way towards each other. If he wasn’t so sure she saw him as nothing more than a best friend he would’ve made some attempt to cross the line a long time ago. The masochist in him wanted to do it despite it too. “So… was this supposed to be a happy movie? Because I don’t see anything happy in every character ending up alone.”

“ preoccupied for ten whole years though? sounds to me they were never planning on remodeling from the get go. “ she brought the bottle up to her lips again, taking another sip. she knew that the bottle would be gone soon enough, and that she would have to hide the evidence. she was almost positive that her friend's parents wanted the rest of the bottle for dinner tomorrow night but that didn’t really matter to her at the moment. if they asked her about it tomorrow, she’d lie. “ i vaguely remember her saying that he looked dirty? whatever that means. “ she shrugged, chewing on her bottom lip. “ your parents undying love? hell, i don’t know. “ she shrugged, her words slurring the tiniest bit as she spoke. clearly the wine was starting to go to her head. “ what are you going to give me if i don’t snitch? that’s the real question. “
"my parents are too preoccupied with everything else going on in their lives," she rolls her eyes knowing that they ran a tight busy schedule. to her parents, she was an angel child. the one who listens to them and follows rules -- or at least that's what she leads them to believe. brow rose in curiosity at her words, a huff leaves her lips. "so, then it was terrible.." she trails off, scrunching up her nose as the other giggles. "and what would you gain if you snitch on me?" lacey questions before shooting her boyfriend a text message telling him to be patient. eyes moves up towards her as she runs a hand through her hair. "he's not mad, just dying to see me i guess."
