he hummed softly in response, this time he was the one zoning out. but, he couldn’t help it. he was invested in what he was working on, had been for the last few days now. it was almost perfect, he just had to add a few last minute touches and then he’d be able to sell it. “ yeah? “ he slid the tip of his brush against the canvas, highlighting a few smaller areas. “ you think it’s my best yet? “

“ i know a great diner we can go to for lunch one day. they have the best club sandwiches, and the coffee ain’t half bad either. “ it was hard to find a decent diner around here that wasn’t a chain restaurant but, he was able to locate one after school one day. he had wanted to take her there before but he didn’t really have a chance since she had only started talking to him again recently. “ lucky for you, i pretty much like anything. i’m not really a picky eater. “ there were some condiments that he avoided but he figured she wouldn’t be adding any of that to the food often. “ ah yes, because the football team really needs new equipment. “ he rolls his eyes, not really one to bash on sports but, it was the reason why some of the funding had gotten cut from the art department this year, making it so he had to buy a majority of his supplies. “ you don’t need to prove anything to them. “ his brows furrow and he pushes himself away from the counter and walks over to her, placing his hand on her side as he stands behind her. “ i told you that you shouldn’t care what they think, they are all idiots and their opinions shouldn’t matter. “ he quickly kisses the top of her head and then pulls away, drifting back to the counter so he could grab his cup of coffee.
“We can definitely do that. Even for more than one night and maybe even for a lunch or two. I love cooking but even I need a break sometime.” she laughs with him as she places a pancake on a plate. “Sounds great to me. You’ll have to be sure to tell me things you don’t like. so I can avoid them as much as possible.” she would hate to make something he didn’t like. Then he might not be fond of the idea of being her personal taste tester. She nods her head as she prepares another pancake. “yep, a fundraiser for the school. You know how it is. they tend to focus on all the sports and I hear they want to give the football team new gear.” She wished that the funds spread evenly at the school. It got to the point where she had to find and buy her own equipment for her class. “I might do both. I’m not sure. I kind of want to prove to the others that I’m more than just the auto shop teacher.”

Despite a pervading air of listless confusion this sequel to the Blaxploitation horror nonsense classic Blacula (1972) is not totally without its charms. Chief among these charms, as with Blacula, are the deep roasted tones of William H. Marshall as the titular vamp. In the grand tradition of esteemed horror honkies like Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee, Marshall heroically acts as though he’s actually in a movie worthy of his stately performance, infused as this is with a tortured dignity. No mean feat this, particularly when he has bits of fur randomly stuck on his face and is fronting a couple of superfly pimps in the ‘hood. The fantastically dated nature of the whole thing is pretty appealing too. Like many another ‘70s movie it’s astonishing to see the past as it was, not all gussied up by artifice, artistic intention or an adequate budget. In movies as diverse as The Reckoning (1969) and Theatre of Blood (1973) you can see an urban white Britain I remember, one that no longer exists. And in Scream Blacula Scream I get to see a past I don’t remember; the Black American urban past. And I dig it man, particularly the threads. There is some serious stylin’ going on here, and up against some real stiff competition Richard Lawson, as the salty gum beater Willis, takes the prize. At one point he seems to be wearing a suit so superbad it’s not just a crime against fashion but a bespoke crimewave unto itself. This, apparently knitted, monstrosity almost steals the movie during a genuinely funny scene, where the newly envamped narcissist pimps himself up to go out, only to find he can no longer see his reflection. Dang!

Willis is all bent out of shape because he’s basically a jive ass fool, but also because Pam Grier’s Lisa is chosen over him as successor to the newly deceased Voodoo queen. In a snit Willis gets some bones off what looks like a comedy hobo and chants at them in a very determined fashion until they burst into flame. These are Blacula/Mamuwalde’s bones as it turns out, and the newly resurrected Blacula turns Willis, and uses his oddly ostentatious home into a den where he amasses a crowd of the undead. Wandering into a party in Willis’ stead Blacula meets Lisa and is smitten, a bit because she’s Pam Grier and thus a stone cold fox, but mostly because he realises her Voodoo skills could free him from his vampiric burden. Willis, however, spiteful even in undeath, continues to scheme against Lisa and hijinks ensue. Not terribly well paced hijinks, and mostly consisting of various people walking round Willis’s massive and tastefully furnished house until they are grabbed by a tousled haired vamp and fall over (but carefully, so they don’t knock anything over).

In-between those bits we meet Lisa’s pal, Justin Carter (Don Mitchell), a chuchy faced ex-cop who, no doubt like many black ex-cops, has turned his enormous house into a museum of African antiquities; which is handy for expositional purposes, and his ex-cop status allows him to drag in his ex-partner, and all-round white square, Lieutenant Harley Dunlop (Michael Conrad, who would later win two Emmys for his role in the TV show Hill Street Blues). The climax of the movie involves a bunch of cops, i.e. The Man, bearding the vamps in their palatial lair, armed with some fenceposts Justin has providentially spotted outside, all while Lisa races to exorcise Blacula of his vampiric tendencies via a poorly made doll. Bad Ju-Ju ensues. And Blacula does indeed scream, as well he might. Scream Blacula Scream was a pretty bad movie, but a thoroughly enjoyable one. One bad mother, indeed. Word.

So in the run up to Christmas I’m doing a count-down (well, a count-up). Twelve days of books! But just like the song, I’m going to increase the number of books each day, with a theme. I’ll link the previous posts on each new one, but if you’d like to follow along I’ll also be tagging them ‘hermitknut’s bookmas’.
On the Eighth Day of Christmas...dragons are people too.
The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman follows Irene, who works for the mysterious Library, stealing books to balance out different realities. On top of that, we’ve got dragons who can look human, fae who bend the world around them into stories, vampires, and werewolves in the sewer system. Not to mention an ex-Librarian plotting something deadly. Fun, excellent, and marvellously inventive!
The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien needs no real introduction, I’m sure. Bilbo’s adventure is a classic of fantasy, from Bag End to barrell-riding to exchanging words with the dragon Smaug. Unrealistically male, of course, but otherwise good fun and well deserving of its position as a classic.
Dragoncharm by Graham Edwards follows an all-dragon cast as they try to defeat the wave of evil currently overwhelming their society. It’s a good adventure story that I got quite invested in - sometimes it’s a bit simplistic (people feel their way through the plot by instinct a tad too often) - but I enjoyed it enough that it didn’t bother me. Fun.
Knighthood for Beginners by Elys Dolan is definitely the most endearingly ridiculous thing I’ve read all year. Dave is a terrible dragon. As in, he’s terrible at being a dragon. So he decides to be a knight instead. He collects his noble steed (a goat called Albrecht who has had all kinds of improbable adventures) and gets on with it. It’s wonderful! Funny and cheering and buckets of fun.
Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton can only be described as basically Jane Austen with dragons and it’s delightful. It’s basically a family drama, except everyone involved is a dragon. The father of the family’s will (of sorts) is contested, which leads to various siblings and friends trying to work around it. Marriages, snark, and interpersonal drama.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini gets a lot of flack for being fundamentally predictable, but sometimes I feel like people are missing the point. It’s an ABC story, sure (Eragon, boy from small village, destined to become a hero) but Paolini does tell it well. And the sequels build on the basic foundation of the first story in some interesting ways! Good characters, particularly in the secondary story lines.
The Heart of Myrial by Maggie Furey is a pretty busy book, plot-wise. There’s at least six plot-threads going on at once, which were quite well done. But it was when they started running into each other that I really started to enjoy it. The world they live in is divided into sections - habitats for different species, really - and someone is breaking this, with devastating impact. Our various heroes, villains, and ordinary folk who are caught up in it are all trying to figure out what to do. Started slow, but I’d like to read more.
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman has a neat set up that allows for humans, dragons who can take human form, and part-dragon humans. Seraphina is an interesting character who gets caught up in investigating the murder of a member of the royal family, and has a vested interest in keeping a degree of peace between dragons and humans. A good, character-driven piece - I’m looking forward to the sequel.
Previously:
On the First Day of Christmas… my favourite book of all time.
On the Second Day of Christmas… books about people exploding.
On the Third Day of Christmas… the very biggest fans.
On the Fourth Day of Christmas… books about princesses.
On the Fifth Day of Christmas… memory is everything.
On the Sixth Day of Christmas… serial killers abound.
On the Seventh Day of Christmas… women growing wise.

“ wow, are they really that scared to walk down here? “ he’s joking, or at least he’s trying to. he had never been good at making others laugh, nor had he ever been good at making an actual joke. they typically just sounded like statements mixed with hints of sarcasm, or at least that’s what he had been told. “ i can always send him to your office first thing in the morning if i need to. he’s in my first period class. “
"yeah, i mainly see all kids since teachers tend to page me to the classroom." blake glanced down at the phone that sat right next to her computer. the teachers always hated walking to her office; they would rather have her make the long walk. "of course you did. why am i not surprised?" she shook her head in defeat as she debated what to do about the kid.

Fatman Review: Mel Gibson as Santa is Not Your Normal Christmas Story
https://ift.tt/3lZGPFt
It’s almost a certainty that you’ve never seen a Christmas movie like Fatman. You know how they wanted to make all superhero films in that “gritty, realistic” style that Christopher Nolan turned into billions of dollars with the Dark Knight trilogy? In Fatman, writers/directors Ian and Eshom Nelms (Small Town Crime) take the greatest superhero of them all, Santa Claus, and transform him into a struggling, borderline alcoholic curmudgeon who may lose his business, and has a killer after him to boot.
That’s right: As played by a more grizzled than usual Mel Gibson, whose voice emanates from somewhere deep within the considerable beard he’s sporting, Chris Kringle is bitter and depressed over the state of the world. More and more kids are making bad choices, leaving him no option but to deliver them hunks of coal instead of toys. But that also creates a downturn in business for his toy making shop–a snowy, decrepit family farm where a staff of hard-working elves lends a little mythological sparkle to this otherwise drab location.
“Christmas generates $3 trillion in the U.S. alone and we can’t even pay the power bill,” Chris growls to his saintly wife Ruth (the great Marianne Jean-Baptiste), who promises him that things will get better. But Chris remains unconvinced: “All I have is loathing for a world that’s forgotten,” he moans, before the U.S. government–which already subsidizes his operation as an economy booster–shows up with a new, post-holiday season offer of a lucrative new contract to make control panels for fighter jets (the military brass is impressed with how efficiently the toy making operation runs, apparently).
There’s something undeniably intriguing about this premise, even if the thought of Santa getting all hot for Mrs. Claus (as he does at one point) is not exactly out of Rankin/Bass’ Santa Claus is Coming to Town, the greatest of all St. Nick origin stories. But the Nelms never do anything particularly exciting with it either. The other main plot thread of Fatman follows Jonathan Miller (Walton Goggins), a hitman hired to head to the town of “North Peak” and gun down Santa.
Goggins is super-intense as usual. He tracks and purchases toys that come directly from Santa’s workshop like a demented collector, since all he got for Christmas from his dad as a child were cigarette burns on his arms. But his client is a spoiled rich kid named Billy (Chance Hurstfield) who previously hired Miller to threaten the girl who beat out Billy for first prize at the science fair. Billy gets a lump of coal from Santa for his efforts, leading him to put out the contract on Mr. Kringle (Billy’s dad is living out his midlife crisis in the Bahamas, making this yet another meditation on absent fathers as well).

13 Craziest Interpretations of Santa Claus to Ever Slide Down a Chimney

The 20 Best Christmas Horror Movies
By Elizabeth Rayne and 4 others
The Nelms guys want to say something about a world where a kid puts a hit on Santa and the old man himself is taking money from the military to make ends meet, but it’s never quite clear what their message is or what tone they’re aiming for. There are a number of clever ideas in Fatman: Chris, for instance, knows everything about everybody already, including their names and whatever they’ve been up to lately. But at the same time, the movie jarringly features a third act bloodbath in which Chris himself wields a gun like, I don’t know, a deranged cop maybe? The mix of satire and suspense is too much for the Nelms.
Speaking of the man who plays both Chris and has inhabited that deranged cop a few times in the past, Gibson continues the post-destruction phase of his career with another detailed yet somewhat sour performance. There’s an occasional flash of joviality, but Gibson mostly wanders somewhere between anger and melancholy.
In films like this and Dragged Across Concrete, it feels more and more like the real Mel is peeking out from behind his characters, so we have to wonder if the Nelms brothers thought it was funny to have the man who once called a female police officer “sugar tits” remark that his business is going “tits up.”
Of all the ideas in Fatman that end up kind of going nowhere, that is the one for which the filmmakers probably most deserve a lump of coal.
Fatman is out now in limited theatrical release and will arrive on digital Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Utopia (2020)
[3.5 stars]
When Gillian Flynn (Widows) announced she was going to tackle the remake of this UK, well if not classic, certainly watershed, I was dubious. Even more so when she asserted she was going to focus more on the dark emotions and avoid the pervasive violence of it all. To be clear, what she has done, and done well, is not toned down the violence so much as gotten creative with its portrayal; there is less in-your-face splatter and more moments of unseen or cleverly filmed action. In other words, this is still exceedingly dark and violent, which it needs to be. But there is also some nice, if not complete, character work.
This remake starts off very much along the same thread as its inspiration. So much so that I was frankly getting a little impatient, even with the different approach. And then it took a hard left turn at the end of the second episode and I was hooked.
Certainly the cast is a good one. Sasha Lane (Hellboy) builds on her varied career as a borderline sociopath in search of her father. And Christopher Denham (Fast Color) expands as an actual sociopath on her heels. But around them are a slew of recognizable faces and performances. From John Cusack (Singularity) and Rainn Wilson (The Boy) at one end of the experience spectrum to Desmin Borges, Dan Byrd (Cougar Town), Ashleigh LaThrop, and Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton at the other. And plenty of other faces show up as well, like Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day 2U) and Camryn Manheim (Cop Car).
But Flynn is a dispassionate writer, willing to go very dark places without compunction, but not very good at building sympathy. I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters beyond sympathizing with their shock. Only Denham and the two youngest characters, Farrah Mackenzie and Walton, really had me in sync with them. I didn’t have a similar challenge with the UK version. I think this is something to do with the scripts and assumptions made by Flynn about how deeply or demonstrative the characters needed to be to bring us on board. It probably wasn’t helped by American-style casting, which tends toward less real looking people in favor of pretty.
All that said, the show has some interesting reconceptions and some odd accelerations as compared to the UK plot. The ending is rather rushed and, frustratingly, rather wide open (not to mention a bit absurd in many ways). But I was left curious…which is what they wanted to do. I’d go back to see if they can actually build on the first series. But, it’s also worth noting that for a lot of the viewing public, this is either a show dead-on for the times or far too close to the bone for many people to watch. Also some of the messaging is a bit off for what we need now…so there’s that.
Here’s the thing: If you’ve never seen the original UK version of this story, I still highly recommend it. Like Misfits and other dark and unexpected tales of their times, they were blazing new trails in storytelling for television. They were doing it in style and with a clear sense of violating norms (that have admittedly become more the norm due to their success). Give this version a shot as well, but be prepared for some very un-American plot choices and a story that may ultimately infuriate rather than entertain, despite a few amazing performances (or perhaps because of them). I’m definitely curious to see if they can fully win me over in a second series by building on what they did in the first, and taking into account the world now as it has changed (our real world, that is).

he took a deep breath — a week? maybe less? that wasn’t good, and he knew it. if anything, they could probably spread it out for more than a week but then they would just be starving themselves and they needed to make sure that they kept their strength for when they had to go out. which seemed to be happening sooner than either of them had anticipated. his blue hues looked outside, watching the mist loom around the home they had secured themselves in. he willed it away in his mind then, closing his eyes and telling himself that it would be gone when he reopened them. but, when he opened his eyes back up a few seconds later, the mist was still there, and the dread washed over him once more. “ this isn’t your fault. “ his voice was soft as he turned towards her, brows furrowing in concern. “ don’t be sorry, az. it’s not your fault. “ he repeated, standing from his spot so he could go over to her, palms resting on her shoulders when he reached her, thumb brushing against her to give her some sort of comfort. “ we will figure this out, i promise. “
Hope, they said, was the last thing to die. But what happened next, when it finally died? Because Azalea had suspected for some time that her hope, at least, had long since disappeared. Sure, she tried to smile at times, to not let Christopher's emotions turn even darker because of her, but whenever she stayed all alone the mask slipped off. The brunette was terrified and a permanent cold had made itself at home deep within her bones, that had nothing to do if she was actually cold or not. At moments like that her anxiety rose up even higher, so she always preferred to just go and be around him instead of letting her thoughts to spiral. Usually, she was good at being an optimist most of the time. But at moments like the current? Azalea couldn't muster it. Her body visibly shivered as she stood huddled, eyes trained on him, rather the unforgivable mist outside and the monsters that roamed in it. "A week. Maybe less." The words burned her mouth. "I'm sorry." What was she being sorry for? They had done their best at rationing, at being careful. But she'd never thought it would last this long. That nothing would happened, at all. That humanity would just give up. "I'm so sorry, Chris," she said again, her shoulders sagging. When her eyes moved downwards it was in an attempt to hide the tears welling in her eyes.

Rescheduling SmashingConf SF And Looking Out For Each Other
About The Author
Rachel Andrew is not only Editor in Chief of Smashing Magazine, but also a web developer, writer and speaker. She is the author of a number of books, including … More about Rachel Andrew …
We are sad to have to reschedule SmashingConf SF, however we are working to find ways to be with our community virtually until we can all meet up again.
We have all been looking forward to our SmashingConf in San Francisco, and are so sad to have to announce that the conference is being postponed until 10th–11th November 2020. If you have tickets for the event, you should already have received an email. If not, then please see the detailed information on this page, get in touch with us, and we will help you out. The team is on standby to try and help you as quickly as possible.
As you can imagine, it was a very tough decision for our team to make. We have been working hard to plan this event and were looking very much forward to it for the last few months, however, we believe it is the right decision for the conference and for everyone we hoped to meet there.
We are all faced with a difficult few weeks ahead, but we still need to do our jobs, keep learning, and also stay connected with our friends. We hope that even though we can’t all meet in person, we can help a little bit as we all get through this together.
Topple the Cat agrees that this is the best way forward for the safety and health of you, our dearest Smashing Family! (Read our full statement here.)
Stay Connected
We know that many of you are working from home for the first time to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and the events and meetups that we all love to attend are being cancelled. The entire Smashing team are remote, and the conferences are one place that many of us get to meet and spend time in person, so we know how hard it can be to lose those opportunities. The community have been sharing some great resources online, however, for those of you who are new to working from home, we went ahead and asked Twitter for tips and got some great replies — as well as links to resources.
The Smashing Team are all remote, but many of our friends are having to work or lead teams remotely for the first time.
What are your top tips, or useful websites and apps for remote working, or remote team leading?
— Smashing Magazine (@smashingmag) March 12, 2020
Some of you might be having to manage a remote team for the first time, with little time to prepare. In “You’ve Found Yourself Leading A Remote Design Team,” Mark Boulton shares some tips from his own experience having led remote teams for many years. On Twitter, Linda Eliasen wrote a thread with all her tips on leading a team remotely. Also, Holloway have released a section from their upcoming guide which covers morale, mental health, and burnout in remote teams.
Laurie wrote some tips on “Remote Work For Teams” while Zsolt exlained how we can switch from in person to remote UX Research in the time of coronavirus.
For people new to remote work, there are some useful tips in “The Leapers Little Guide To… Working Well From Home Under Self-Quarantine For Coronavirus,” and also in Carie Fisher’s post, “Top 10 Pro-Tips For Working Remotely.” Benedikt Lehnert wrote a great guide with lots of practical suggestions, “I’m Working Remotely, Now What?!” Vice.com have some information which they claim will help us not to feel like a “lonely garbage slug”. (Wait, what is a garbage slug?)
As someone who usually has a smarter shirt to hand to throw on over my gym clothes when I need to do a video call, I liked this tip:
Wear pants! Otherwise you’ll forget and go grab a snack. I don’t know that from experience…

he never thought upon meeting her that anything would happen between them. he figured that they would get together occasionally to paint, and maybe hang out a time or two outside of that but, he didn’t think that anything would actually happen between them. he knew he was horrible at reading the room, and was a bit slow at picking up when someone was hitting on him. but, he wasn’t that slow. he figured that he must’ve missed her flirty tone when she spoke to him, or figured that when she did flirt that she was just joking or something. clearly he had been mistaken the entire time. “ no, it makes sense. “ he nodded, finding himself taking another step towards her. “ i didn’t know it was okay to like you more than a friend. i didn’t want to push you towards anything you didn’t want. “ a pause. “ but, i think it’s safe to say that i am attracted to you and that i may have developed a bit of a crush on you. “ a smile pulled at the corners of his lips, his light blues hues stayed on hers as he took another step forward. “ i mean, how could i not? “
she was the one who was making it complicated. mostly because she'd never been in this situation. and wasn't sure how he felt. she'd been crushing on him from the start but never said anything. at least not until now. those flirty remarks she'd make was her trying to ease into all of this. and to see how he reacted. and he remained oblivious to them. lips pursed as she watched him rest his paintbrush on the side table and turn his attention onto her. she grew even more nervous as the silence remained for a moment. maybe she didn't have a chance. maybe she wasn't anything more than a friend. finally though , he spoke and it eased her nervousness a bit. he thought she was wonderful, smart and beautiful. the witch couldn't help but blush a bit over his words. eyes glanced down before he took a step forward. " no – you're not reading anything wrong. i mean , yes but no. if that makes any sense. " davina replied. " i've been attracted to you from the start but i just didn't know if you liked me in a manner that's more than a friend." she took a step closer. " i like you more than that, by the way. "
