I am so so sorry to hear about the 90,000 words incident. It seems to be a painful but necessary decision, and I'm curious to see how this all pans out. It must be challenging to keep returning to the outline document to ensure an appropriate setup. How do you balance so many plot threads while keeping track of minor details and maintaining a smooth narrative? How detailed is your outline? Apart from making adjustments to initially thought-out ideas to make the story work better, are there moments or plot threads you had ideated later that you have woven into the existing storyline?

A labour of love indeed; every re-read leaves me constantly in awe!!

I talk about my outline process here, which I realized for some reason does not appear in any search of my blog or the Internet in general, so: sorry about that. But that's the answer. I outline in pretty intense detail, and then I use a checklist for every chapter to make sure nothing gets lost. Sometimes things jump out at me while I'm writing, and I'll rip out pieces of the outline or toss things aside because the organic development of the scene is something I like better. But generally, I'll try to be faithful, because the outline is constructed specifically to service the broader arc of the story and its contingent character arcs, so whenever I depart, I do so with wariness about fucking over some other contingent part I've forgotten.

There are a few exceptions. Daphne was going to stay a recurring background character (think Millicent Bulstrode) until her scene in "Operation Prewett," which she elected to treat as a full-throated audition for why she should get her own storyline. I had very little say about that one. She's an imperious little thing, we know this.

That's a fun question. I've actually been inserting extremely subtle hints since chapter 01, so let's see if these make sense:

Rubbing her right temple, she made a mental note to tidy up soon and look for her beloved Encyclopaedia of Toadstools, now temporarily lost amidst the clutter.

chapter 01

She plucked a bit of stray lint from her overcoat that clung near to the folds near her elbow, and then trailed over the soft petals on yellow chrysanthemums and blue iris flowers, the tip of her nail grazing over the threads.

She skittered to the other side of a massive traffic jam, the tip of her yellow walking stick umbrella clicking against the asphalt surface of the road with sharp, uneven beats.

Taking in the tranquillity of the garden paths, Anna observed the blooms on the ground with interest, keen on finding mushrooms native to the area.

So, we have:

Adding all of the above to Anna's personality (unafraid of toil [i.e., putting herself through a Muggle university in another country to study lots of things she just doesn't understand and has never heard about], loyalty, follows the rules as much as possible) and her tight friendship with Millicent combined with a rather persnickety side, at times, observant and a bit shrewd, definitely clever and resourceful ---- and, to put it in simple terms, we have a Hufflepuff with Slytherin traits.

Going back to your very interesting analysis:

So, as far as Hufflepuffs are concerned, we see quite the negative side to them in the Harry Potter books --- though they've always managed to take a step back and apologise. The Ravenclaws, unfortunately, were quite mean to poor Luna Lovegood so I'd say that Hufflepuff is the more accepting of the bunch.

With its caveats, of course.

In Chamber of Secrets, when the rumours that Harry is the Heir of Slytherin are running rampant, Hufflepuff House also joins in after the Parseltongue scene at the Duel Club (and after Justin Finch-Fletchley is attacked). Ernie Macmillion does apologise for believing the rumours after Hermione gets Petrified, but there's a certain quality to Hufflepuff that remains consistent throughout the books.

Community loyalty does make them jump to conclusions (i.e., believing that Justin will be Harry's 'next victim' for being a Muggleborn), they are pretty nasty during Goblet of Fire and that animosity only lessens after Cedric asks his House to go easy on Harry. Hufflepuff's behaviour during the Tournament was a bit of an anomaly, but in the end they insist on fairness and do think about their biases.

Loyalty has two sides: it can be a positive trait and it can come at the expense of others. Anna suffers from this issue quite a lot during the story, as she both wants to fit in and keep up the rules that uphold the Statute of Secrey. She's community driven --- but she's slowly questioning certain truths and her own ethics during this Kira mess: why is the JP Ministry being overzealous? Is she being negligent if she doesn't do at least some research on 'shinigami'? Is Kira a wizard or a Muggle? Should she go by Millicent's advice and stay out of it, leave the Muggles to their own devices?

In the end, she can't stay away. Loyalty and fairness win above self preservation.

And that's also why she's extremely vexed by Ryuga/L, because he stick out like a sore thumb, drawing attention to himself and anyone who engages with him by virtue of being...well, himself. Anna is trying very hard not to stand out. She also didn't like how he was seemingly interrogating her, though she feels her own thoughts and words against him are unfair when she first learns he's disappeared. No matter how uncouth and uncomfortable, perhaps Ryuga/L doesn't deserve being badmouthed.

“Hard pass,” she said instead, slightly flushed, doubling down on her grievances as her joints and back muscles unwinded with painful relief. The memory of those dark, owlish eyes still unnerved her. “Though you might consider stringing him along if we ever need to go sailing; the hot air might prove useful.” (...) “Guy’s missing from campus, didn’t you hear? Though I guess he’s eventually gonna come back; it would’ve been all over the news if one of this year’s top representatives at To-Ho had been nailed by Kira.” Anna paused. Her heart clenched a bit as she swallowed the unfairness of her previous words. “But if he’s missing, shouldn’t the…police do something? That doesn’t sound normal.” “Depends. They won’t search for just about anything. Unless you need probation, the police don’t often take action here when it’s a missing adult male,” shrugging with one shoulder, Sarah adjusted the straps on her backpack. She popped another balloon. “Besides, Ryuga’s not necessarily a goner; he might just not be here of his own volition.” “Sounds like a gamble, given present times,” Anna's grip on the umbrella handle tightened as Sarah nodded grimly.

For the second time in a couple of weeks, she felt a pang of remorse over her words. It wasn’t entirely fair. Ryuga had been oddly attentive in his own, backwards way. She'd give him that one, at least. However — and Anna pursed her lips at the memory — there had been something off, beyond the squatting and very much unhelpful commentary dripping out as she'd picked up her broken laptop and books. A covert examination of her actions, the intensity of it oozing like sticky molasses down the pot, as his eyes snapped back and forth between her and the suitcase. What stuck out to her the most was the visible disappointment in Ryuga’s owlish eyes when she tried to give him back money. She rested her hand against the side of her face, lost in a maelstrom of musings. What a strange Muggle.

To further explain, Anna is extremely annoyed at Ryuga's audacity but she also internally acknowledges her knee jerk reaction as being unfair. She's conscientious, a trait that L will find both a blessing a curse --- especially when it works against him.

I hope this answered your question! Feel free to debate this rant or send more questions about The Ides of April (and the companion fics). In Shi, Ku, (4, 9) we'll see a more aggressively loyal side to Anna trying to protect Naomi in chapter 02 --- going as far as literally tracking down L at whichever hotel he's at, lol. He gets the fall-off-chair shinigami reaction all over again.

Honestly, when Neville and a few other people had grouped together past the wizarding war to start something called a support group for those who had lost important people through the cause, never would he have thought it to last longer than a year. It wasn’t as if he didn’t believe in the necessarities of talking through harsh-ships (more often than not he wished he had been given a chance to truly talk about his own) but the wizarding world wasn’t as developed as the muggles when it came to those type of methods. As a fullblood wizard himself just in the start of interacting with the muggle world, he could assure to that. 

This was a passion project, and one Neville was more than attached to, so when the Daily Prophet had reached out for the sake of an interview neither of them had denied the opportunities to gain a free shout out. Two of the others had sat down with a journalist yesterday to talk about the more shallow development since the start, but early in the morning Neville when had entered their establishment (no more than a three rooms and a door leading out) he had found an owl telling him they craved more to finish the article off and asked if one of their fact checkers could stop by to fill in the gaps. Of course, why not? It sounded easy and quick enough for him, until the person in question had knocked on their door and Neville realised he stood face to face with no other than Millicent Bulstrode. “Oh... are you the, uh, fact checker?” he inquired, his foot scratching against his leg as a most nervous tick. “Can I see your badge?”

He paused where they had stopped before, their noses just brushing, their breath intermingling in the minuscule space between them. Draco's lower lip trembled, aching for closure, for even a whisper of a kiss. One of them had to do it, one of them had to be brave.

Harry's thumb traced the curve of Draco's ear, his eyes filled with need. Draco understood. He was never going to be brave enough to close the distance between them. He could face dark wizards and dangerous magic, but he was scared of kissing Draco Malfoy.

He smiled and raised his hand to cup Harry's cheek and draw him in just that last bit of distance. He kissed Harry lightly, an exploration, a test perhaps, to see if it felt right. When Harry didn't reject him Draco slipped his hands around his waist and drew him in closer so he could push deeper and show him that, yes, it was indeed right.

Harry's hesitation dissolved. He pressed back eagerly, his hands moving now, encircling Draco's body and holding him up against his hard, muscled chest. Draco's head swam with disbelief, astonished that it was actually happening. The memory of that brief, glancing contact by the lake six years ago was drowned out by this moment, the realization of possibility.

They kissed deep and long, their tongues sliding across each other and their lips moving as one. Breath mingled, fingers threaded through hair, hips pressed against each other with mutual desire. 

Draco took a chance and stepped in the direction of the tent, drawing Harry with him. Harry followed, holding Draco close so that not even a slip of parchment could fit between them.

It all started with a juicy picture and a thread at one of Narcissa Malfoy’s party. Namely, #GuessTheGuest. In reality it was all Bulstrode’s fault. Or perhaps his Mother should stop throwing the best parties of all times. But then this has nothing to do with the fact that he had just revealed to the world who his Guest of the Manor was. This has much to do with how his Mother found out about it.
