Despite what had happened back there, the casual assertion that Ty was his guy and therefore, not to be fucked with, flooded Ty with warmth. Truth be told, he'd been nursing a little crush on his friend for a month or two now. Nothing soul-crushing, certainly nothing to write in his non-existant diary about. More in the sense that Colin was hot, and Ty was certainly queer of some description, and his roommate was convenient to daydream about. It helped that he was sweet, and that they liked all the same stuff, and he seemed to be genuinely fond of Ty. Ty bit his bottom lip, holding back a shit-eating grin. He would really like to be Colin's guy.
It was a weight off his chest, too, to know that this didn't change a thing between them. So maybe Ty messed around with guys sometimes, and maybe Colin was straight. It didn't mean they couldn't still be friends. He would hate to lose Colin in any aspect, and selfishly, he didn't want to stop indulging his little crush. Colin's bed was comfier than his, anyway, and his shirts fit better...
"Okay, Col." he chirped, pliant and amenable as ever as Colin's hand found his waist for the second time that day, guiding him down the hallway through the familiar route to their dorm. Like Ty didn't walk the same path every day. Still, he was happy to let Colin take the lead. It had always been that way. Colin was a natural leader, a big personality, all pumped up bravado, like he was compensating for something, taking up space just to prove he was worthy of it. In comparison, Ty breezed through the world, happy to follow in Colin's stride, never letting responsibilities burden him or weigh him down. What worries did he have when he was Colin's sweetheart?
"I dunno." he shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck. "I thought we were too."
Ty had had a rough year last semester, the year Alfie had become a more permenant fixture in his life. Nothing a slap on the wrist from his abuela couldn't fix - his grades had slipped, he was skipping classes to smoke with Alfie, he'd been caught up Deanna Austin's skirt in the science labs. Alfie encouraged his bad behaviour, thought his stories were funny, until his Dad had threatened military school and made a sizeable donation to help him keep his place. Ty had given up skipping classes and dark fumbles in classrooms, but he'd never quite kicked the smoking habit.
"Like two weeks ago he stopped coming around, saying hi to me in the hall and shit." he huffed. "Figured he'd mellow out eventually."
Letting Colin pull him into their shared room, he let out a small laugh as they bumped hips, the door slamming shut behind them. He turned to face him, putting a firm hand on his shoulder as he gave it a quick squeeze.
"You're being very protective." he smirked, the gravity of the situation not quite hitting him just yet. "It's cute."
Turning on his heel, he moved to sit on the edge of his bed - the singles he and Colin had long since pushed together - among the mussed up sheets and the abandoned textbooks.
"They'll forget about it soon." he said, talking with a certainty he wasn't sure he felt. "The cocksucker stuff."
He toed off his sneakers - once a pristine white, now flecked with mud - and pondered the situation. They'd been pretty nasty back there. The taunts and stuff. Hell, Alfie had moved to throw a punch. He hoped they'd all forget about it soon...
"Geoff's such an asshole."
If Colin hadn’t been seething with rage, he might have felt guilty about having left Teddy behind. Abandoned as he was to the pack of wolves that Colin had once called his friends, he knew the other boy could handle himself. People liked Teddy. He was sweet and handsome, charming to a fault, his grades were always impressive, and he had a chest like a Greek God. Sufficed to say, he thought he’d manage just fine in there, even if all he needed to do was make a quick escape. His primary focus right now was getting Ty out of there and making sure his best friend was okay.
Before he could usher the other boy further down the hallway, into the general direction of their dorm room, he was being circled, the full force of Ty’s bright smile hitting him head-on, almost knocking the wind from him entirely. Relief flooded through Colin’s chest at the sight of the warmth on his best friend’s face. The confusion and anxiety that had riddled his expressions mere moments before had now washed away, now replaced by an inexplicable look of awe - and all of it was being directed at Colin.
“What happened was those dickbags in there were trying to fuck with my guy,” Colin explained, catching Ty’s gaze, an easy smile making its way onto his lips.
He paused, stuck momentarily on his own word choice. My guy. It had slipped out so easily, such a simple turn of phrase, yet he suddenly wondered if he should have thought better about labelling Ty in such a manner? He was Colin’s best friend, there was no disputing it. Colin was well-respected at school, even by the likes of Alfie and his shitty little gang, but true friendships were few and far between, and he counted himself lucky to have people like Teddy and Ty on his side. Ty, in particular, was such a permanent fixture in his life that he couldn’t ever imagine he’d ever be without the other boy, but with rumours circulating on the what ifs of Ty’s sexuality, should he really be labelling the other kid in a way that could be deemed so... possessive? Romantic, even?
He hardly needed to mull it over for too long. While Ty’s sexuality might be up for debate to some people, Colin wouldn’t allow for it to become a second thought in the back of his mind. He was sure the speculation was all bullshit, but even if it wasn’t, he wouldn’t let those asshats change the way he viewed his friend. From study buddies to roommates to doubles partners to best friends, Ty was his partner in every possible sense of the word; He wasn’t about to throw that away over a little gossiping.
“Can we at least walk and talk? I don’t want entitled little cunts like Alfie skulking these halls and trying to come for you again, sweetheart,” Colin shrugged, the term of endearment falling easily from his lips.
Reaching forward, he gave the other boy’s waist a gentle squeeze before nudging him carefully in the direction they needed to head, guiding the two of them back down the hallway. Their dorm wasn’t far, and he’d rather fill Ty in behind closed doors. He knew he must've heard some of what those assholes had been saying after he entered the room, but he wanted to give him at least a little privacy to process the full extent of it.
“I mean, seriously. Who does Baxtresser even think he is? I thought you guys were cool?” Colin mused, glancing sideways at Ty.
It hadn’t gone unnoticed to him that the two of them hadn’t been talking lately – Alfie had usually been Ty’s go-to smoking buddy whenever Colin wasn’t around. And while it was rare these days that Colin wasn’t somewhere nearby, he’d definitely noticed a weird vibe between them.
Rounding another corner, Colin came to a stop in front of their dorm. Suddenly feeling protective, he curled his arm around Ty’s waist once again, tugging the other boy closer as he nudged their door open with his hip, taking careful steps backwards as he pulled him through the doorway and let it swing shut behind him.

With every step towards the common room, Ty's head thudded. He knew he should've done a lot more last night than simply tug his shirt over his head and fall into a heap besides Colin's already-sleeping form, but hindsight was a bitch. Ty of this morning, walking in silent companionship with Teddy, the two of them sporting twin headaches, would've drank a gallon of water and brushed his teeth thrice over before climbing into bed. But he couldn't change last night's mistakes. And boy, had he made plenty of mistakes.
It hadn't felt like a mistake at the time, kissing Marty. There was an extremely small crossover at their school of boys who kissed boys, and boys who actually made it known they kissed boys. Ty was somewhat straddling that line. He wasn't out, by any means, but word had spread somehow that Ty Castillo Jiminez was pretty much up for anything.
"You like boys, don't you?" Marty had asked, smiling at him with his all-American grin, perfect rows of white teeth, floppy blonde hair falling over his eyes. It had seemed silly to deny it, a secret truth Ty had been harbouring about himself since the first time he'd seen Colin Nash in his tennis shorts.
Ty had laughed in what he hoped was a sweet, coquettish manner, but in fact probably came across as a little nervous.
"Yeah." he'd confirmed, doing something halfway between a nod and a shrug.
"Do you think you could like me?"
That was the last thing he remembered Marty saying before they started kissing. Clumsy, unpracticed mouths hot against each other as their teeth clashed and the other boy tugged at his clothes, mumbling encouragements as Ty kissed down his chest, past his open shirt, Marty pushing his head down.
Tugging his backpack strap furthur up his shoulder, he huffed out a sigh. He'd have to tell Colin and Teddy later, away from prying eyes. It was only a matter of time before it all got out, given some asshole's complete inability to knock before walking into a room where someone was getting their dick sucked. He didn't want either of them to find out from somebody else - especially Colin.
Pushing open the door, a smile stretched across his face at the sight of Colin rising to his feet, coming over to meet them. A greeting died on his lips when his best friend turned abruptly to Teddy, Colin's grip vicelike on his wrist as he began pulling him in the opposite direction.
"But, wait - we just came from that way." he huffed, a pout on his lips as he shook his hand limply, imploring Colin to let him go. He shot a small look at Teddy all the while - equal parts distress and WTF.
It occured to Ty in that moment just how noisy the common room was, how claustrophobic it had become, Ty's small bubble of Teddy-and-Colin-and-Ty bursting as he lifted his eyes. A mean boy with an ugly snarl on his face was leering down at the three of them, Alfie Baxtresser. Someone Ty had used to smoke with behind the bleachers up until about two weeks ago. Hatred was plain on Alfie's face as he enquired whether or not Colin was hurrying him away for a quote, unquote "good time."
Ty's mouth fell open slightly as his eyes caught Colin's flash of blue, his face contorted in - disgust? Confusion? The young man's stomach twisted and he felt his face heat up, ears suddenly filled with lewd and disgusting comments he was trying his best to block out. He wanted so badly to clamp his hands over Colin's ears, shout and sing so that he wouldn't hear any of it, not like this.
"Colin, it's not-" he started to say, never quite finding his way to the end of that sentence. What it looks like? True? Well, it was exactly what it looked like and undeniably true. In moments, Colin had pushed past him, his words coated with anger as he left his friends standing there.
In the absence of Colin, Ty resisted the urge to reach for Teddy's hand, tether himself to his only other ally in sight. He knew it wouldn't help matters, though, and he didn't want to bring his friend down with him. He watched in awe as Colin spat his retort right back in the ugly face of his former friend, the knight in shining armour Ty wasn't sure how he'd ever gotten lucky enough to have. Hope sprung in his chest. Colin didn't sound mad, or weirded out, he was being... well, weirdly supportive.
As Alfie's fist swung to connect with Colin's face, Ty darted forward, ready to throw himself in the line of fire, an angry "Hey!" falling from his mouth, but Colin didn't need him. Instead, Colin was back at his side, arm fitting snugly around Ty's waist in a way that served to make butterflies explode in his stomach. Colin Nash, righteous with anger and holding him in the protective circle of his arms, a sweet pet name on his lips.
Ty stumbled from the common room into the relative quietness of the hallway, his backpack slipping from his shoulder and whacking his hip. He tugged himself free of Colin's grasp, rounding on him to look him full in the face.
"What the fuck just happened, man?" he asked, breathless. He punched Colin's arm lightly, a disbelieving laugh escaping him. "You were awesome in there."
shoot another shot, try to stop the feeling
“Geoff said he walked in on him giving Marty head at the kegger last night. I’d bet money that wasn’t his first time, too. We’ve all seen how close he is to Nash.”
Colin stiffened at the sound of his name, the whispers of his classmates practically echoing across the common room. Rich, entitled boys rarely saw the need for subtlety. There seemed to be a level of glee that could be found in the humiliation of others, as was evidenced now by the way the rumour mill seemed to be spinning, Ty’s names on the edge of everyone’s lips. It was all bullshit, obviously, Colin could attest to the fact. Sure, he hadn’t been with Ty all night – they'd lost sight of each other more times than once, with Colin challenging Teddy to an endless stream of races in the pool, knowing fine well he had no way of beating his friend at his own game. Still, he’d have known if Ty was hooking up with someone. Especially if that someone was a guy.
He just hoped they’d decide to shut the fuck up sooner, rather than later, when he knew both Ty and Teddy were due to meet him in the next few minutes. The three of them had decided to put their heads together, hangovers be damned, and try to get a little studying in ahead of their upcoming midterms. The muttering showed no signs of coming to a halt, however, and Colin suddenly found himself pushing to his feet at the sight of his two friends entering the room, none-the-wiser to the bitchy, self-obsessed gossiping that was unfolding around them.
“Teddy, we’re gonna have to love you and leave ya, buddy,” Colin announced, abruptly stepping in between the two boys as he rounded on his best friend, his hand closing around Ty’s wrist.
As if the look of bewilderment on his friend’s face wasn’t enough, he felt the gentle press of Teddy’s hand against his shoulder, whispered queries of what’s going on? muttered close to his ear. At least somebody in this hellhole had at least an ounce of tact and self-awareness, Teddy’s instinct to keep things lowkey and not draw attention feeling like a saving grace in those few, short moments.
Of course, it was all wasted on the three of them, the vulgar sounds of teenagers varying from ages from 15 – 19 sounding around them, wolf whistles filling the space. The sight of Alfie Baxtresser seemed to hover in Colin’s peripheral, his obscene little minions swimming into view as they surrounded the three of them, smug smirks clear on their faces.
“You whisking him away for a good time, Col?” Alfie called out, sounding just as pathetic as he always looked. His words were followed by raucous laughter as the common room seemed to erupt with noise, self-declared straight-boys adopting lisps and feeding into hateful stereotypes as they called out to Ty, demands for him to get on his knees carrying across the space.
Colin winced as he caught his best friend’s eye. He knew it was all bullshit – it had to be – but he couldn’t quite handle the rage that was surging through him now. These assholes thought they could run the place and they didn’t seem to give a damn who stood in their way. These guys used to be Ty’s friends, and now they simply made a mockery of him, their bigotry on show for all to see.
“Screw you, Baxtresser,” Colin snapped, whirling around abruptly, his shoulder roughly colliding with Teddy’s in the process. With a careful hand to the other man’s waist, he pushed past his two friends and surged forward, crowding Alfie’s space. “Seriously, get fucked, man. You think Ty’s going around getting on his knees for every guy he sees? Well, so fucking what, man. At least he’s getting some, unlike you assholes.”
His words were exactly the spark that was needed to light the fuse. Voices flooded the room as Alfie’s fist swung forward. His reflexes had nothing on Colin’s, however, as the aspiring tennis player dodged the attack, a grin on his face. He felt smug. These douchebags were all talk, spouting their mouths off and making others feel small, but they couldn’t handle a little light teasing when someone else matched their energy.
With that, he spun on the spot and returned his gaze to Ty, who looked sheepish. Without thinking, he circled an arm around his best friend’s waist, unbothered by what their classmates might make of the action.
“C’mon, honey, let’s go,” he muttered, drawing Ty close as he started to lead him out of the room. He needed to get him back to their dorm to debrief. “Ted, we’ll catch you later, okay?”

“Right.” he giggled, both boys all too aware of just what Colin meant. He was a pretty guy, knew it, loved to flirt. And Ty was extremely susceptible to his specific brand of teasing.
The carefully constructed chaos of the bed was disrupted as Colin threw himself down beside Ty. He felt himself be lifted up off the bed rather than see Colin’s impact, as he’d suddenly become pretty preoccupied with the paint work on the far wall. He’d known Geoff couldn’t keep his mouth shut to save his life - at the time, the disgust on his face had quickly turned to gleeful amusement as a hundred different blackmail schemes must’ve run through his head. He’d clearly decided to go the route that would be the most chaotic and the most impactful - spreading the gossip like wildfire.
The warmth of Colin’s hand on his thigh served to pull Ty from his thoughts, a delightful shiver cascading up his spine at the thrill of Colin’s bare skin on his. He’d dressed quickly that morning, for comfort more than anything, gym shorts and an oversized tee, cap clamped down over his head. Probably still reeking of beer. If Colin had any complaints, he didn’t voice them.
He turned his eyes to Colin, whose cheek was pressed to the bedspread, the screwed up sheets somewhat a make-shift pillow. A smile flitted onto Ty’s face immediately. It was hard not to, with Colin looking at him like that. He couldn’t help but compare the situation to the one he’d found himself in last night, a beautiful boy in his bed - though he’d take Colin over Marty any day, Colin was miles hotter - a hand inching up his leg. His fingers dug into the meat of his other leg. He couldn’t afford to think like that, not anymore.
“You don’t like Marty?” Ty found himself asking, nerves palpable in his tone. Colin had always had nice things to say about Marty, not looks-wise, he’d never checked out his ass or said he thought he was hot. But he’d said he was a nice guy, fun or whatever. Ty didn’t know why it suddenly mattered so much that Colin approved of the guy he’d blown last night.
But now Colin was laughing, like the idea of him having sex with Marty was the funniest thing in the world. And that’s what it had been, right? Not full-blown gay sex, but a sex act? He swallowed uncomfortably, wanting to defend himself. He thought Marty was cute, actually. Colin didn’t get it. The pool was pretty small of guys who wanted to kiss him. And it had felt nice, to be wanted like that.
“He’s not that bad.” Ty stated, knowing how he sounded. Overly defensive. Kind of pathetic.
It seemed that Colin had already moved on from whether or not Marty was good enough for him, however, now looking at him with features coated in confusion.
“Why’re you looking at me like that?” he laughed, placing his pointer finger in the space between Colin’s eyebrows, pretending to smooth out the lines that had formed there. He trailed his finger down the bridge of his nose, to the place where his lips had formed a sweet little pout, indignant and haughty. God, he was cute.
“Huh?” he said, dropping his hand back to his side. He hadn’t said anything about Geoff, had he? Maybe he had. Fuck.
“No, no. Nothing like that.” he said, inclining his body towards Colin’s own. He closed his hand over Colin’s, giving it a tight squeeze, unsure if the comforting measure was more for his or his best friend’s benefit. “He hasn’t really bothered me. Well, I guess, now he’s kind of bothering me.”
He screwed up his features, unsure how to tell Colin now that the topic had come up, well, somewhat naturally. He’d been hoping to broach it as a funny anecdote, maybe even when Teddy was there, a laugh on his lips and slapped backs, Hey guys, guess who scored last night? Had it mattered that it was a guy? It was starting to feel less and less like he’d actually scored at all, the whole night washing over him like some sick joke.
“I uh,” he started, dropping Colin’s hand to rub the back of his neck. His dumb little tell. “Cause I saw him last night.”
He felt himself blush fire-engine red.
“I was with him. Not Geoff. Marty, I mean.” he blurted out, wishing the heat in his cheeks would die down.
He tried to remember where Colin had been at the time. He’d been by his side most of the night, but at some point he must of disappeared into the crowd, Teddy in tow. Yeah, that made sense. He’d come back with wet hair, water droplets still clinging to his skin. He’d been laughing, Teddy too. Ty wouldn’t have bothered slinking off with Marty if Colin had still been in the room, his gravitational pull too strong.
“It was when you and Teddy went for a swim.” he scrambled to explain. “I went to find somewhere to chill out, or I was looking for you, I don’t remember.”
He bit his lip, trying to recall through the haziness of his drunken fumble.
“We were just fooling around.”
