Random Writer Anon!!
When you get this answer one of the questions (or all if you really want!) then pass it on to 5 writer friends! 🥰If you have more than one WIP, pick at random! We want you to talk about your works, and celebrate with you! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Don’t worry if you don’t know how to answer these questions, I’ll be back with more next Sunday. 😉
What are you most excited to write with this WIP?
How has this WIP changed since the “daydream/brainstorm” stage?
Who is your favorite character in this WIP and why?
Hello Anon!
Thank you so much for initiating these WIP Asks! (I saw you drop these in the boxes of a few other fellow writers.) It's very sweet of you to give us an opportunity to discuss our works. <3
My focus is solely on one project right now, which is my Thorin fic for the Thorin's Spring Forge event. (Deadline is up next week---eeek!) I'm not going to lie; it's been a big struggle for me, mostly because my back-to-back winter illnesses have been killing whatever writing energy and focus I manage to muster. Hopefully talking about it for a little bit would help!
WIP Title: "The Broken Shield" (Thorin gen fic)
What are you most excited to write with this WIP?
This fic is important to my personal LOTR/Hobbit AU legendarium, which I call "SotWK-verse". It tells my version of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, which is obviously vital to the history of Thorin Oakenshield. But aside from fleshing out some significant points about Thorin's character and motivations, it also links his background to that of Thranduil, his family, and the Mirkwood elves.
I'm excited for The Broken Shield to shed light on some questions insufficiently unanswered by the books and movies, such as:
How does Thorin wind up hating elves so much? Is it really just old prejudice passed down by his forebears, or are there more personal reasons?
Why DID Thranduil turn his back on the dwarves during the Sacking of Erebor?
What the true cause of Thranduil's anger against the Dwarves of Erebor? (It's definitely NOT just because of some jewels.)
How did Thranduil's wife die in Gundabad (according to the movies)?
2. How has this WIP changed since the “daydream/brainstorm” stage?
Well, I'm definitely seeing how it's SO MUCH harder to get this ambitious tale down in proper story format than it is to just imagine and play it out in my brain. But that's the case with all fiction writing projects! I don't think the story or concept has changed much since I conceived of it many months ago.
3. Who is your favorite character in this WIP and why?
This story also prominently features Frerin, the Elvenqueen (Maereth, my OC), and Thranduil. However, Thorin is the heart and center of this tale, and he is my favorite in it. I think (or at least hope) this story reveals the true depth and quality of his character, and helps us understand better why he behaves the way he does in The Hobbit. I believe Thorin is a much wiser and kinder king and person than his father and grandfather before him, and I really want to prove that in all my stories, but especially this one.
Thank you again for the Ask, Anon! Wish me luck with completing this fic, my friends! Mahal give me strength! LOL.

Thranduil: Can you believe some people can see Y/n and not immediately be filled with absolute unconditional love for her?
Legolas: They don’t even get the urge to hug her right then and there. That’s incomprehensible to me.
Haldir : Absolute monsters
Elrond: *nodding in agreement*

I can't hear enough discussion about how refreshing it is to have elves in Rings of Power with a range of ages and looks and races.* I liked PJ's films a lot and still do, but there were some choices, like his insistence that you can't cast elves who even look like they might be close to 50 years old,** that seemed to do a disservice to the source material.
I know that Tolkien describes elves as immortal and ageless, but my opinion based on my impression of the source material is that it is not always a completely ageless look, but a quality of their demeanor and approach to such a potentially long life life that differed from that of Dwarves or Men. So there is a quality of life unique to the elves as the Firstborn, but I don't believe that time and experience would leave no marks on them either, severe injuries notwithstanding, which is why I am so in love with the direction they're taking with casting in TROP.
*RIP Rían, you were a badass and died heroically. I nominate Wei Zhe Ming as perfect fantasy elf casting for future seasons.
**As far as I know PJ said this more than once, but when looking for a source for what I said above I could only find this video. (And I watched the whole thing -- the BTS for Thrandul in the Hobbit films -- because I'm reading Barduil again. So happily reading Barduil again.)

On this list, you'll find the fluffiest of fluff, body horror, and everything in between. Mind the tags and ratings for each fic, and don't forget to show the authors some love if you enjoyed them!
Fandoms: Tolkien, Lost Girl, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and one awesome Dracula-Barbie crossover (yes, you read that right!)
Silmarillion/LotR
Oubliette by Stramonium (Gen (Maedhros-centric), T, 1097 words)
In the bowels of Darkness, Feanor's firstborn takes an account of what is left.
Our Shared Monsters by theworldisquietheretooquiet (Eluréd & Elurín, Elrond & Elros & Maglor, Celebrían & Elladan & Elrohir, T, 978 words)

3 sets of twins, 3 different forests, one suspiciously similar monster.
joy is a bird, a fragile thing by estuarie (Elrond & Elwing, G, 1003 words)
"Good day," he says and finds that his voice carries a tremor. Elwing is smaller than he remembers. "Good day," Elwing responds. Her grey eyes are wide and sad.
Elrond comes to Aman and meets someone who has been lost to him.
far over land and sea by ArgentNoelle (Maglor/Susan Pevensie, G, 2471 words)
Susan dreams of music, and she knows it is not the music of Narnia. It would have both eased and angered her if it were: the bright gold of Aslan’s mane, a warm breath: these things still come to her in stolen moments. And in the years since her exile she’d said it was play-pretend when what she meant was ‘we walked out of paradise full-knowing we would never come back.’
Melui Edlothia - Sweet Blossom by KimicThranduilion (Legolas & his mother, G, 1031 words)
Elfling Legolas gives his mother cause for worry before springing a sweet surprise on her.
Our Dark Master by Corsair_Caruso (Morgoth/Sauron, E, 2263 words)
Mairon finds his Master in agony after being rescued from the predations of Ungoliant by Gothmog and the Balrogs. But only Mairon can give the Dark Lord what he needs...
an anchor in the stormy sea by frosted_violets (Gimli/Legolas, T, 2730 words)
After the battle of Helm’s Deep, Legolas breaks down. The amount of death is too much for him to bear, and he finally realizes the mortality of his traveling companions. He shuts himself away, but Gimli finds him and puts him back together.
Come Tomorrow (You Won't Find Me Here) by Lorinand_Lost (Barefoot_Dancer) (Glorfindel/Maglor, E, 2215 words)
"They are tired of ghosts, the both of them, even ghosts they love."
[Glorfindel makes up his mind to sail for Valinor, but he won't be going alone]
Bedtime Storytime for Little Legolas by amloveabledeathmo (Thrandul/Thranduil's Wife, G, 2076)
Children are always too excited to sleep when something fun is going on the next day. Legolas's mother tries her best to settle him with a story of how she meet his father.
The Life and Times of the Witch-King of Angmar by Gheyn (Sauron/Witch-King of Angmar, E, 3880 words)
"I ought to slay you where you stand," the Witch-King growled.
"Come," Sauron laughed, walking from the tomb where eight stooped corpses stood waiting.
Middle-Earth's Greatest Tourist Trap by octopus_fool (Gen, T, 4225 words)
It was always Blorbo Baggins' big dream to visit Mount Doom. Sauron, on the other hand, hasn't been able to leave Mount Doom since the One Ring was destroyed.
elvenkings by am_fae (Oropher & Thranduil, Elrond & Oropher, Elwing & Evranin, G, 1524 words)
Thranduil sat on a pier and watched the silt swirl and mingle with the clear salt of the ocean. Something tugged in his young breast: he could not name it. It was not sea-longing.
The Sea’s Fury by SunflowerSupreme (Maglor/Salmar/Uinen/Ossë, E, 3298 words)
After centuries wandering alone, Maglor is pulled from his home on the shore.
Stars by politicalmamaduck (Arwen/Tauriel, Not Rated, 3088 words)
Tauriel journeys to Rivendell when King Thranduil decides to pay Lord Elrond a visit, and amid training sessions and late-night conversations, she and Arwen fall deeply in love.
The Crane Wife by Trebia (Thranduil/Thranduil's Wife, Lalwen/Thranduil, Legolas & Thranduil, Legolas & Lalwen, M, 4347 words)
Lalwen, on sailing east, had more history to her than most would recall.
Or, if you will, why Thranduil was so bent on those gems.
So Summer Comes by potatoesanddreams (Elrond & Elros & Elwing, G, 2655 words)
Nana is so tired. Elrond can see it in her stillness, in the slump of her shoulders, in the languorous blinking of her reflection’s eyes. She has been sitting at the window since noon, but it has worn out her strength as surely as if she had gone running along the snow-laden sea-cliffs with him and Elros and the youth who came along to mind them, searching for a vantage from which they might by good fortune catch sight of Ada’s ship.
Ada said he would be home by autumn equinox. It is winter solstice now.
the light in my life by likethenight (Sigrid/Tauriel, G, 3137 words)
Nothing ever happened in Lake-town, Sigrid thought, later, nothing ever changed, and yet in the space of two days and nights everything changed.
It takes her and Tauriel rather longer than that to untangle what they feel about each other, however.
Lost Girl
Waiting for the Rain to Fall by Arbryna (Bo/Tamsin, E, 1365 words)
Tamsin isn't as confident as she'd like everyone to believe.
Solace by Arbryna (Dyson/Tamsin, E, 2209 words)
Dyson is grateful for the distraction Tamsin keeps offering him; he just can't figure out what's in it for her.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
the face of someone (i don't know) by guin_ramble and zombiesam (Buffy/Giles, E, 6349 words so far)
Buffy, newly resurrected and in the throes of depression, seeks comfort in all the wrong places. When her despairs threatens to completely overwhelm her, she turns to the person she trusts most.
Dracula-Barbie Crossover
la petite mort by howlingmoonrise (TheDarkStoryteller) (Babie/Dracula, T, 3896 words)
“Well,” she says, long and drawn out, and from the glint in her eyes he can tell this is some kind of inner joke, kept from him. “I’ve been a diplomat, and a race car driver, and a chef, and an astronaut, and a veterinarian--”
“An astronaut,” he repeats dryly. He wants to call her on her lie - but. But. How strange. There’s no indication of a lie: no rise in temperature, no quickening of her pulse, no change to her eyes, nothing.
She laughs. “You don’t know the half of it."

Idk if i asked before, but when was that mereneth arrived to serve at Dol Guldur? Was she there when thranduil and ferdan got burnt by the dragon fire?
I'm not sure if you've asked this yet either, but Tumblr doesn't always like to give me my asks in a timely fashion nor give them to me in order received so we'll probably never know haha (Just so there isn't any confusion: Amon Lanc was the original name for Dol Guldur when it was still owned by the elves. After it had fallen into darkness, it was renamed ‘Dol Guldur’ which means “Hill of Sorcery”.)
I think that Mereneth was already living in what became Oropher’s capital city of Amon Lanc before Thrandul and Oropher even got there. In my head, before Oropher and the other Sindar arrived the Silvan elves lived in a wwhhooolleee whack load of different villages of varying sizes spread throughout the entirety of the forest. The largest village was either on the hill that Amon Lanc came to be built upon or very very close to it, which is why it became the capital since it essentially already was. Mereneth had been born in the village and thus was living there when Oropher and the rest of the Sindar arrived.
So yes, Mereneth would have been at Amon Lanc when Thranduil and Ferdan got burned by the fire but I don't think that she would have been a part of their exploration party and thus not at the campsite when it got attacked. The boys got burned quite soon after Oropher had been crowned King, so Mereneth probably knew OF Thranduil, but had not yet met him personally.

//Do you have any Lindir hcs? •w•
Hello my Lindir-loving friend!
I still have to get around to making an official, full-blown "character sheet/profile" for Lindir as he exists in the SotWK AU, but in the meantime, here is a quick summary of what I do have in my notes regarding his origins and early life in Lórinand, before he came to Lord Elrond's service as a steward in Imladris:
Lindir
Lindir was born in Second Age 1243 in Lórinand. His father was a Sinda who had migrated across the mountains with Amdir's company. His mother was a native Silvan.
He had an older sister named Calanien, who was nearly his polar opposite in personality; the siblings were very close, regardless.
His father was a tutor to Prince Amroth who became a high-ranking steward in King Amdir's hold. Lindir's mother was an herbalist who was brought by her husband to the King's household to become a royal healer.
Lindir began service in King Amdir's household when he was relatively young, holding various positions ranging from butler, to scribe, to valet. He became known for his cleverness, problem-solving skills, and amiable nature.
Lindir's talent for singing remained private during his youth in Lórinand. Despite his name, he was not publicly known as a singer until he came to Imladris.
Lindir became well-acquainted with both Lady Galadriel and Lady Celebrían during their stay at Lórinand around SA 1350.
At about this time, he also met Lady Maereth (the future Elvenqueen of Eryn Galen), a visiting Noldo from Eregion. They eventually grew into lifelong friends.
Maereth and Lindir's relationship, although entirely platonic from the start, was so lovely and pure to behold that it roused the irritation and jealousy of one Prince Thranduil, who for years mistakenly viewed Lindir as a rival for Maereth's affections.
Centuries later, Lindir, driven by his friendship with Celebrian and Maereth and his deep admiration for Elrond, came to live in Imladris where it didn't take long for him to become one of the most trusted stewards of the Last Homely House.
Bonus SotWK exclusive: I do have an OC I plan to introduce as a love interest for Lindir! I have already introduced her in one of my recent fics. She is a trusted member of Thrandul's household staff and almost like Eryn Galen's "Lindir equivalent".
Thank you for this great Ask! <3 As I said, I hope to write a more thorough "fact sheet" for Lindir soon, AND write at least one of the several fic ideas I have for him. :)

Do you think that the whole Sunfire arc is extremely unnecessary? A lot of people including myself believe this arc diverts attention away from the main arc
Hobbit critics when Thranduil captures the dwarves and generally acts as a snare, slowing their progress toward their stated goal and the resolution of final plot: why did they even come here, this guy's an ass and he serves no narrative purpose except to get in the way
Me, knowing Thrandul Oropherion's full character arc leads him to participate in the War of the Ring and help save Middle-earth as a direct result of his character growth in the Hobbit:
#asks#i don't see the point of criticizing unfinished art#it is not done yet#narrative structure functions in such a way that clear connections already exist between the various plots in this show#there will be more and clearer lines drawn as the show comes to a close#it's not your fault if you can't see them#not everyone is trained in the literary arts#but have faith in those who are!#this is literally our job#if i. who knows nothing about cars. walked into a mechanic shop and began criticizing the mechanic halfway through her job#for being greasy or having parts everywhere or swearing at the stubborn bolts#because i did not understand what i was looking at#i might feel justified in the moment#but people who understand how fixing a car works would look at me with pity or perhaps worse#because who am i to presume to tell another how to do their job when i do not understand it myself#and when simply waiting and trusting in another human's skills is all i really need to do in order to see the final finished result#just wait and relax!#no one is paying you for negative opinions#why work for free
