I don’t know what compelled me to, but I drew the beloveds with a bunch of iconic movie quotes. Yippee!!!

thinking about hermit businesses in s8...

they're so. interesting? and varied and dynamic and totally different to what they had in s7? I think part of it has to do with the lack of a central shopping district, so each of the hermits have an incentive to make their shops unique to attract customers to their side of the continent; but also I think there are other factors to it. like, I think the hermits have learned the lesson of grian's barge: it's good to sell a wide variety of random stuff. single-item shops don't tend to do well unless their wares are really valuable (like shulker boxes and elytra).

and there are more collaborative businesses than ever before. like, we had concorp, architechs, and then pacific (rip), but now in just the first few weeks we've got the big eye crew, horse head farms, the yes wings club offering discount rocket sales, and etho and bdubs' horse breeding thing. and because there's no shopping district, franchises have been dotting shops across the countryside: potato vendors, padlamas, pass'n'gas.

and then there's the inventive shop mechanics at play. from microtransactions to the swaggon's and horse head farm's IOUs, diamonds are no longer the only currency on the server and every shopping experience might just be a dangerous gamble (or a very nice gamble, if you're shopping for slime at cubfan's slime casino.)

but even beyond that, I love how... in character all the shops are, and how they play off the hermit dynamics so perfectly. like, take geminitay. she's a forest princess, a new member to the server. she loves decorative plants, even the unloved birch tree; she might even be a nature spirit, according to fandom headcanon. so she sets up a little market to sell the plants she has farmed — dripleaf, spore blossoms, azalea roots — not entirely realizing that the hermits industrialize. they mass-produce. there are always about 3 different log farms going on at the same time. she's a nymph who's new to the area who wants to turn a profit but doesn't quite know how yet, but who is eager to make her little market as beautiful as possible.

or, mumbo. mr peace love and plants himself. I think it's fairly obvious how his shop fits into his character: it's a mix between plants (leaves and logs) and explosives, all ethically farmed as long as statistics are your only measure. he's a trigger-happy potato boy with a veneer of sunniness, and his shop sells deadly weapons while marketing itself as "harmless".

then there's grian and scar. monopoly men perpetually on the move, not keen to share their profits like the big eye crew are. they build their shopping caravans large — scar's more quirky and potentially dangerous, grian's more streamlined and functional. grian keeps in mind the lessons taught by the barge, selling for value. he keeps his prices low and his eyes wide for diamonds; the uniqueness of his wares takes a backseat to profit. scar takes a different approach, using his charisma (and large hat) to charm his way into acquiring scraps of land and valuable pieces of paper from people across the server. meanwhile, the main swaggon is overflowing with life, from bees to villagers, humming with almost as much energy as the man himself as he brings his little copper-roofed wagon all across the server. the rivalry was inevitable, and it didn't take long to crop up.

impulse's business ventures are as frenetic and varied as he is. iSoar scarcely goes up before lichen subscribe and iFloat surround it, with the candy factory to follow. impulse is the man who starts ten projects in ten episodes and finishes them ten episodes later, committing to everything wholeheartedly from massive pigmen farms to decorative patterns for an iron farm room. it's only fitting that he dots boatem with shops large and small, profitable and punny, which seem to have little to do with each other save for the iconic 'i' brand they carry.

cubfan doesn't build shops; he builds corners of delight, ventures to bring his servermates together. his slime casino accepts anything in payment; his powdered snow collective only costs iron to join. he doesn't look for diamonds; he looks for connection. I mean, he built a massive gaming district in his base last season which was free to play. with the... 7 people or so on the server running around trying to build up business empires or use underhanded tactics to gain an upperhand in the precious market, cub's presence is a tribute to the collaborative nature of server life. (which is hilarious considering he was 1/2 of the monopoly monster that was concorp haha)

just... thinking about hermitcraft s8 shops, and how perfectly they build the atmosphere of a lived-in world, how much they work to establish the characters the hermits play...

Can we talk about how Impulse wears cargo shirts while wearing his robe/coat thing. The reason he even put on that coat in the first place is because his factory was too cold for him, yet he's just walking around no problem in SHORTS. The robe doesn't even reach his shoes, he's not even using it to keep his legs warm. Sir your cold resistance is very odd

I’ve been thinking about Tango too much recently and my loving partner decided to point out how much this song fit him and...yeah. Yeah it does. If you haven’t listened to the SB musical it has very similar themes to the end of s8 and I highly recommend it. Please, you will cry.
