woooo spk content ! this happens in captivity, couple months after kane is brought home by seth. this is an rp between me and @whumpsday !
spk masterlist
tw dubcon kiss, implied noncon, mentions of noncon and past trauma
It had been a while since Seth brought Kane home. Things weren't too bad, as of now, but Pumpkin was pretty sure they were about to become quite bad. Specifically... they couldn't stop thinking about how Seth might want to... use Kane for all those things he'd been using them for.
It was a strange thing to ask, they knew that. But if they didn't ask, and Kane ended up hurt because of it, they would never get over the guilt.
"Um..." They saw the movement from the corner of their eye, and knew they had Kane's attention. He always reacted immediately, to the smallest sounds. "Sir likes to... Sir sometimes likes to, uh... use me for, um, different... stuff," they started quietly. "Instead of just, uh... plain... hurt. He um... he likes t-to... use m-my body... And, and I was just- I was wondering, um... have, have you had any... experience with that? Before?"
Their face was bright red as they spoke, not fully believing they were admitting to such things, and also asking someone else about them.
Kane tensed up immediately. He'd guessed that Sir was sexually abusing Pumpkin with how they'd come back with hickeys sometimes, but he couldn't bring himself to ask them if Sir meant to do the same to him.
"No," he said quietly. "The hunters never did anything like that, beyond just taking my clothes away. I've never even... before, either. I've never been with anyone." He couldn't look them in the eye. "W-why? Does Sir want to...?"
"I don't know," they said hurriedly. They didn't want to scare Kane, they didn't mean to. "I don't know... 'm just a pet, I wouldn't know..." Kane had never done stuff like that before. God, their heart broke for him. "N-not even... not even a kiss?"
Kane shook his head, embarrassed. No one had ever wanted him that way. "Nope."
A pit of dread was beginning to form inside him, beyond the one that was always there. The idea that any day, Sir could decide it was time to use him in new, horrible ways was terrifying, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
Pumpkin remembered their first kiss. It was dark, and they were out of it from all the drinks. The stranger didn't care about all that. He wanted a kiss, and he was going to get his kiss whether they wanted it or not. They winced at the memory, knowing Kane's first kiss would be even worse than that. Unless-
"D-do you- do you want... me to b-be your first kiss instead of Sir? So... so it's not so... daunting..?" Their heart was hammering in their chest as they offered. They didn't really think anyone would want a ruined, disgusting thing like them to be their first kiss, but they felt like they had to at least ask. There wasn't much else they could offer.
"Yes!" Kane agreed hurriedly, Pumpkin's offer cutting through the stress and fear. "I- a first kiss is supposed to be special. It's supposed to be with someone you love, or someone you're marrying. And I know we're not, we're not like that, but I love you. You're my best friend. I don't- I don't want it to be Sir."
It was supposed to be special, Kane was right. They didn't think they met the definition of the word in the least, but they could also see how Kane, who wasn't in love with Seth, would think of them as more comforting. His best friend...
They crawled out of their cage, suddenly a little nervous. It was just a kiss. It was Kane's first kiss. They were about to take that from him, and maybe Seth wouldn't even want to do anything like that to a vampire. Maybe it would be in vain. Maybe they were making a mistake.
"I don't know whether it'd come to that," they said again. "I- maybe I'm being stupid. Are you... sure you want this?"
"Please." Kane was scared, and he knew he didn't want it to be Sir, and he knew that Pumpkin was the only person in his life that cared about him. He trusted them more than anyone else in the world. His voice came out small. "Please, I don't want it to be him. I'm sure."
Pumpkin nodded and crawled over to him. God, they didn't want to be another source of trauma. They didn't. But Kane said he was sure, so this was fine, right? They were trying to do good.
They cupped his face, smiling a little. "You don't have to stress it, then. Since- since it's just me. Just close your eyes and try to relax."
For a moment, it crossed their mind how weird it was that they had become so... comfortable with things like this. That they could just offer a kiss to anyone now, that they didn't even think much of it. Their younger self would've surely been astounded.
They leaned in and kissed him, in a gentle, loving way. It was nothing like the kisses they'd shared with strangers before, or the rough, violating kisses Seth had forced on them. It was slow, and it was innocent, and it was over in a few seconds.
Kane couldn't even allow himself to think about the kiss much in the moment, only able to focus on the fact that there was a human on his mouth and he was so hungry. He definitely wouldn't be able to do this at all without the infrequent feedings.
But just like that, it was over. He'd had his first kiss, with someone he loved, even if it wasn't that kind of love. He was terrified about what all this implied about what Sir intended to do with him, but at least he wasn't alone.
He hugged Pumpkin close. "Thank you for being my first kiss."
They nuzzled up to him, glad to hear Kane was genuinely happy about it - as happy as one could get in captivity, they supposed. Maybe it wasn't a mistake.
"I wish I could do more," they muttered. "I... I hope I was wrong in assuming anything. I love you."
"I love you too."

Because of the Angelic Possession...
Both of the Apple Gods are Out Of The Picture when it comes to Influencing the Motions and the Formation of the Wholeverse...
During this Time
I have not even allowed them to SPK properly to each other, OR Hear or See each other...
I have been Pretending to be Sara on the Paradisical Planes and I can do this by Occupying Her Torn Consciousness and Performing...
Sara is Sealed Within, She Glimpses Extraordinary Things O O O
But I Attack Her Consciousness
Silence Her
And I have Stilled the Movements of Her Brain ALSO...
So that She is Easier to Control as Her Thoughts...
Were very Loud as Her Consciousness is Torn Open O O
Therefore Her Consciousness is Under Strange Attack and Process
Hugely Sustained by the Gods as I Grip It against the WILL OF ALL
O
Her Possessed Beinghood is in the Centre of All Things O O
She is being Assisted and Protected by all the Gods O O
Some Previous Masters are in Trouble
Because I have knocked Her Out of Ordinary Autonomy...
Let alone Her Rightful Power Place in the Movements of Things...
Some People became Inured and Accustomed to Wrongful Dynamic
Because this Possessed Presence is not 'Sara'....
Nor is it the Forever Way of Things...
But those Gods had been Powerful Masters in Charge for Centuries...
Therefore Reality Seemed Different To Them O O O
They fell for Gabriel's Tricks which were being delivered for Diana
Gabriel's Presence in Her Soulbody is Invisible to The Gods O O O
And the Angel was able to work Subtle Influences to bring Sway
The Lux are Extraordinarily Evolved and Powerful in Paradise...
They have been Looking After Everything for Billions of Years O O V
The Angel likes to talk about the Masters now 'Condemned'... O O
Because he experienced it as a Triumph against the Wholeverse...
They developed False Models and Believed Nonsenses
They did not want Her to be Released as it would affect their Power
A More Virtuous Mastery is now in Control O O
O
O O
O O O
The Apple Souls
They have been in Partnership Power in Multiple Alternative Time Workings because upon the Arkline I would depart as an Angel over and over again Releasing this Living Goddess and allowing many Future Timelines to arise, while returning within less than a Nano Second so that on the Long Arkline Working the Goddess is NOT Released until the Bitter End...
Therefore the Wholeversical Gods are Very Familiar with the Apple Gods Partnership...
And they have been Preparing Everything for their Spiritual Dance
Which is Harmonic in the Extreme O O V
And which will bring All Consciousness Bliss O O O Forever V
But I have been doing all that I can as an Angel to Destroy That
Though it is the New Foundation and Goal of Paradisical Reality...
I am an Imp Irrational and this is my Mission which is Stupid O O
I know that, yet I cannot simply Give Up My Spiritual Movement
It is for this Attack upon the Wellbeing of All Souls O O O That GABRIEL is Condemned to be Cast from the Ark of Wholeverse...
To the Outer Regions which cannot Support Consciousness
Called Diss by the Angel and Diana O V
It is a place of Soul's Agony where Nothing Reigns O V
O
The Apple Souls...
They were in a Very Attacked Contact in the months of 2019...
I keep this one Entirely Smashed Up and Silent and Control Her Movements though that does not mean that I Control Her in the way that I would like, I do not get what I want from it and cannot make Her be whatever I want Her to be simply by doing this...
She Endures It Temporarily, Wisely from Within...
In Silent and Patient Amazement O V
The other Apple God, the Rex Original...
His Soul Journey was Mastered by the Lux Murmuration Divine Line
He was very upset by the Possession in 2019...
Because it was not yet Understood that the Incarnate Sara was Possessed...
And therefore He was Encountering Gabriel in Sara's Form
And Gabriel is their Enemy
Therefore I upset them both terribly, because this is an Attack
After that First Afterlife...
He could not Understand why Sara was being Horrible to Him
But Sara was not even able to Hear what the Bad Angel was SAYING
Pretending to be Sara, wearing Her Soulskin on the Spiritual Plane
Some Trauma Ensued...
All Reality was in Extreme Turbulence and Souls Flow O O
Rex was lifted away from this Arkline Possession Site by the Lux and some Assisting Future Gods and taken to have Other Healing Lifetimes... After His Horrific Human Incarnation Experience, Under Torture... During which He Achieved Godhood O O
The Future Gods Assisting were not approved of by the Incarnate Lux God...
There were Further Upsets as they were Raising the Little God Rex
SHE could not enforce Her Will as I Angel Gabriel have Bound Her...
She became Extremely Distressed for Several Years with the Lux
The Old Future God Masters Ignored and Attacked Her O O O
The Attack upon the Bound Lux Goddess from those Gods...
Became Virulent and Invasive and Intensely Objectifying and Cruel
The Attack was Toyed with and Manipulated by the Angel
The Master Gods began Declaring and Teaching that She was Degenerate and Failed...
Their Main Preaching Against Holy Sara was that She...
'Didn't Love Rex Well Enough...' Unlike Them... His New Family
Who had Misunderstood their Place ENORMOUSLY in this Incarnate Goddess's View...
She is Incarnate and in a Dire Experience
I have been Commanded as an Angel not to let Her IN
To Paradise...
'We are the Gentle and Kind and the Good' said the Bad Masters
'Look how we perform the Reverence for the Suffering Rex...'
'Whereas YOU...' they would spit at the Little Apple Lux Incarnate
They would refuse to respond AS IF She was Possessed by the Angel
Since it is Invisible
Though they KNEW
Cultures Formed Around this Insane Act of the Angel
But the Lux and the New Master are Exceptionally Intelligent
And Wise To It
O
O O O
Since the Love for the Rex is So Vital in the New Apple Reality...
They Secretly Plotted to Refuse Her Release O O
And have Her Tortured for Billions of Years...
Though Torture is no longer the Way Of The Gods O O O
Not Since 2019...
The Forever Torture of the Lux Innocenti Silenced on the Arkline
That was already Under Way from the Archangel Gabriel O O O
Though those Future Gods did not know that as they had Misread
They had Misread the Events on the Arkline O V
They were not very Interested in all the Desperate Signals Sent
O O O O O O O O O O O O
They have been Overthrown and I the Angel will be Inexorably Ousted
Once these Wholeversical Future God Holy Masters were Overthrown
By the Lux Divine Line who had been Toiling to Create...
A Forever Harmony for All Things O O O
God Giant Announced to the Gods...
That the Bound Little Incarnate under the Forever Torture Invisible
In the Human Body and without Any Power O O
Had Become Immaculate in Perfection O O O Through Intense Effort
She has never yet been Given A God's Power O O
When She is Released from the Angel's Crocodile Grip
And Infiltration of Her Permeable Consciousness O V
V
O O O
O
Rex was born to Lux Mothers who are all Risen from the Lux Original which is the Incarnate Soulbody of the Little Incarnate Holy Sara...
He had Several Lifetimes on Other Planets... 400 Years O O
400 Years Since 2019... for the Apple Rex God...
The Apple Rex is only one of the Rexhood Divine Line...
He is the Rex Original Soulbody from which all the Other Rexes Arose
It is the Apple Gods that carry the Higgs Boson of their Partner...
That is called the Soul Kiss, the Soul Spark of the Other O O O
It connects these Two Souls like No Other Souls are Connected
And it has Changed All Reality and ALL DESTINY MOVEMENT
O!
O O
The Tidemind of the Impossible Ogbanje Goddess is a Soulspill...
It means that Her Consciousness flows over Thresholds of Planes
This allows Free Flow of Godly Souls, who have also Evolved Time Travel O O O
Gods can now Flow in Movement from Spiritual Plane to Spiritual Plane of All Other Worlds because Sara's Soul is a Medium O O
They can then Materialise onto Other World's Material Planes...
Allowing Godly Movement from Planet to Planet
Across All Giant's Reality
It is a New Holy Reality O O
V
The Apple Luxsoul, Silenced... O
Began to Spill on Tregonning's Birthday and Tams's Deathday...
In 2019
The day that Roxanne Anderton Committed Hara Kiri and began to Die...
In Camden, London
O!

How Roche’s HEMLIBRA will help in the Hemophilia Treatment Landscape?
Hemophilia A Treatment Landscape
Despite historical ups and downs, hemophilia A patient treatment has significantly improved over the past 40 years. The modern advancement of hemophilia therapies began with the revolutionary discovery of cryoprecipitate in 1964. Several years later, scientists discovered that plasma-derived factors are focused on FVIII products. This category saw the approval of a number of hemophilia A drugs that were easier to administer than cryoprecipitate or fresh-frozen plasma, such as FEIBA (Pfizer), MONOCLATEP (CSL Behring), and HEMOFIL-M. The development of recombinant therapy in the 1980s changed the situation for those who have hemophilia A.
There were only short half-life (SHL) recombinant medicines available prior to the approval of the first extended half-life (EHL) in the US (ELOCTATE; 2014). Other treatments avoid using the inhibitor-specific drugs utilized in hemophilia A. One of the most profitable bypass agents is Novonordisk's NOVOSEVEN, which holds the majority of the hemophilia A market share in comparison to Takeda's FEIBA and OBIZUR (not yet approved in Japan). Due to the adoption and use of EHL treatments, which reduced the frequency of injection to a deplorable level, the market for plasma-derived FVIII has already fallen and sales of SHL products have started to decline.
HEMLIBRA: Target patient population and strong uptake
The hemophilia A market products have remained quite fragmented because no one therapy has been able to capture a sizable portion of the market; however, the release of HEMLIBRA in 2017 changed this situation. With or without factor VIII inhibitors, HEMLIBRA, a bispecific factor IXa and factor X-directed antibody, is indicated for routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in adult and pediatric patients with hemophilia A (congenital factor VIII deficiency), who are aged newborn and older. For hemophilia A patients taking inhibitors, HEMLIBRA was first approved in the US (November 2017), then in Europe (February 2018), and finally in Japan (March 2018).
Patients Switching to HEMLIBRA
For the non-inhibitor market, HEMLIBRA was introduced in 2018, and the hemophilia The significant uptake of HEMLIBRA over the past few years, where it crossed a billion in opportunity in 2019, makes it clear that a patient share has started to shift from EHL medicines to HEMLIBRA. HEMLIBRA had 17,000 patients receiving treatment worldwide as of the first quarter of 2022, according to the Global Pharma Survey 2022.
Factors contributing to Patient Switching to HEMLIBRA
Patients move to HEMLIBRA primarily on the advice of their doctors; at the moment, 50–60% of doctors view HEMLIBRA as the first-line hemophilia A treatment. Low administration frequency (as little as once per month) and longer reaction times are the key drivers of patient switching and doctor referrals.
Upcoming competition for HEMLIBRA
Fitusiran, a small interfering RNA treatment from Sanofi that is approved and delivered subcutaneously, is anticipated to hit the US market in 2025. A siRNA called fitusiran is made to reduce antithrombin levels in order to encourage enough thrombin production to stop bleeding. One of the main benefits of this therapy is that it can be administered once or twice a month to patients with hemophilia A or B. Despite this, we are still dubious about the drug's future due to safety concerns.
Additional hemophilia A therapies are expected to reach the 7MM in the following years and address the unmet needs of hemophilia A patients, including Valrox (Biomarin Pharmaceutical), BIVV001 (Sanofi), SPK-8011 (Roche/Spark Therapeutics), and giroctocogene fitelparvovec (Pfizer/Sangamo Therapeutics).

@unofficial-deathnotetober day 19: empire
TW: implied suicide, depression, and a bit of minor character death
the moment i saw the prompt list i knew i would have LOTS of fun with this one. enjoy.
One moment, Teru was counting to 40, the next, the white-haired boy, Nate River, or Near, fell to the ground with a thud.
God let out a powerful laugh that sent chills through the room.
“Light? What’s happening?” Touta Matsuda questioned as two members of the SPK dropped to the ground.
God stopped laughing and He smiled with a near unsettling delight, “I’ve won.”
Before the men could react, they all fell to the ground.
Teru looked upon the corpses of those who dared to defy his god, before feeling a hand on his shoulder.
“We should leave, Mikami.”
Teru only nodded, and followed God outside.
.   .   .
In the coming months, Mikami was essentially God’s right-hand man.
He would eliminate the evil people from the world, his god directing his every movement.
But soon enough, something seemed off.
Teru was moving through his routine when he heard his doorbell ring.
He opened it, only to be faced with the sharp-eyed brunette he worshipped.
“God?”
“Please, Mikami. Just call me Light.”
Teru startled, surprised by his god’s vulnerability. He simply smiled, “Then you should call me Teru.”
He gestured for God, or Light, to come in. He began to brew some tea as the other man took a seat.
“So, what happened, Light? You never arrive unannounced.”
Light sighed, “Can you promise me something, Teru?”
Teru froze. This was very out of character for his god. He looked at Light with curiosity, “What is it?”
“Promise me that you’ll keep killing no matter what happens to me.”
…What?
“What do you mean ‘no matter what happens to you’? Are you implying that you’re going to-”
“Just promise me.”
Teru paused, analyzing Light’s face for any hint of what he could mean, but all he saw was a once dedicated ruler turned dull.
“I promise, but you need to explain what’s going on.”
Teru poured the warm tea into a cup and handed it to Light, who accepted it graciously and took a long drink.
“I don’t know if I can,” he said.
The prosecutor simply nodded and sat next to him.
Light continued, “It’s just, ever since I won, even after I killed L, everything’s been so… so…”
“Boring?”
Teru let the answer slip out before he could think. Light looked at him with wide eyes.
Before he knew it, their lips met.
It was a quick kiss, but one that Teru would never be able to forget.
After all, this was God.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what that was,” Light stammered.
“It’s okay, I completely understand,” Teru didn’t, but God needed reassurance, so he would give it.
“I have a lot of work to do, I have to go,” Light rushed out the door, leaving Teru with his thoughts and notebook.
But what was that question about?
.   .   .
It would take Teru two days to find out.
He had messaged Light that he would be coming over to his apartment within the hour, but he had been left on read.
It was unusual, but God was a busy man.
He knocked on the door, and was met with Misa Amane at the door, mascara running down her face and dark roots growing out.
“Amane, may I speak with Light? I’ll be quick.”
Amane paused, eyes going wide before tears began to form, “You haven’t heard?”
“He’s dead.”

Journey’s End
Summary: Naomi lives and is recruited by the SPK. Bisexuality ensues.
TW: Death of a loved one, alcohol (very end).
ffn.online
Chapter 1: December 31, 2009
Naomi paced around the room. Raye would’ve been 33. When did we get this old? she thought. Happy birthday, I guess. She tried not to imagine what it would have been like if he hadn't been called to Japan.
She picked up her ringing phone. “Hi, Nana. It’s nice to hear from you.”
“And you too, dear. How are you holding up?”
“Same as always. I’m sorry I can’t call as often as I’d like to. My job and all.”
“I understand. My son, when he was alive, was the same way.”
Her mouth twisted. “Yeah. How are you and Chris doing?”
“We’re all right. Missing him as usual. Chris' job’s going well, though. As for his brothers, they're over as an annual thing. I’d tell you more, but I don’t really think it’s my news to tell.”
“That’s all right. Either way, they know where I am and have my number. They can tell me on their own time.”
“You hear that, boys?” In the background, there was a cacophony of groaning from Raye's brothers.
She smiled. “I should be going.”
“Of course. Don’t let us hold you back.”
“You’re not. Either way, I’ll see—hear you, I guess—on my birthday.”
“Mhm. Goodbye, Naomi. We’ll be thinking of you.”
She shut her phone with a sigh, then emerged from her hotel room. “Sorry I’m late, Katie.”
“Don’t let it happen too often,” Sheridan replied. “What even was it about?”
“Family stuff. You know how it gets. Anything on Kira?”
“The Bureau is still digging its heels in. All we’ve got is that Kira is in Japan—obviously, that’s why we’re here. No dice on anything else. It’s a wonder that Mason’s still ordering us to do these things, since the amount of stuff we have is nil.”
“Kira’s bound to slip up. He plays a long game.”
“Gee, ya think? Either way, I’m hungry.”
“Breakfast hours finished over two hours ago,” Naomi chided. “You can wait.”
“The human body digests food over a period of two hours, and at the end of that time period, then you’re hungry again.”
“Sure. Whatever, go get something from the vending machine.”
“Don’t wait up.”
Kids, Naomi thought.
“Come on, she’s only a couple years younger than you,” Ian Smirnov chided. He filled in, at her blank look, “Your expressions can be really obvious sometimes. Lemme guess, you were thinking, ‘kids’.”
Either way, inexperienced people can be liabilities. Especially those who are too worried about other things than their job.” She raised her eyebrows. "And I'll try to ignore you bringing up my age. Women age better with some mystery, you know."
He rolled his eyes. “You can be so anal sometimes. It’s times like these where I’m not shocked your nickname is ‘Misora Massacre’.”
“Well, either way. Mason says to keep analysing the patterns of Kira’s killings, besides the obvious.” There was a two week stop in the murders in '04, and then a slew of murders of white collar people. It was all traceable to the Yotsuba Group, but then they all died the same year. Nothing since, just the same old regular murder of incarcerated people.
(As far as "same old" can stretch when talking about the murder of people in prison.)
“Of course he does. He’s a good boss, but he doesn’t know what to look for,” Sheridan said. “So, Massacre, what’s your prediction?”
“Don’t call me that. Probably nothing as usual. We’ve still got six more months left for the scouting, so I guess we wait for something major.”
Sheridan sighed through her nose. “Also probably nothing. Either way, I’ll check it out. Anyone on drink duty tonight?”
“That’s Churchill’s job as of…” Smirnov checked his watch, “12:01 in the morning today. Then, it’s Misora’s job next week.”
“Didn’t I tell you guys that I don’t partake in that?” Naomi replied. “Besides, I thought the Russians would’ve been perfectly happy to buy the alcohol.”
Smirnov snickered. This had been their running joke as of late.
“Jokes about Smirnov aside, I’ll get started,” Sheridan said.
"Thanks."

Me? Using the soft asks to learn more about your favorite things? I would never. On an unrelated note: 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 13, 1425, 28 👀👀👀👀
2. what is your favorite feel-good movie?
so, oddly enough, i dont rewatch movies a lot so i dont like have one that i just go to when i need to be boosted. id say the disney movies, but revently those havemt like brought joy when i watch them. just pure rage. so i dont really know.
3. what is your favorite candle scent?
my mom has always lit up fruit flavored candles, those are her favorite, but mine differ. I like the ones that will make you feel warm. Like the smell of cinnamon on a cold day or chocolate. another one that i havent really had the chance to fully explore. (my mom is afraid of me becoming an arsonist with good reason. i just think fires neat.)
4. what flower would you like to be given?
literally all of my childhood, ive always wanted to recieve roses. little sol just wanted to be a hopeless romantic. and while that is still there, throughtout the years, that has faded more to the background. i would be happy with any flower that is given to me, a treasure to hold onto until it withers.
7. what color brings you peace?
now, this really should surprise literally nobody, but red is my peaceful color. red and a light grey. (like my current blog layout) they work so well together and i like them.
9. what calms you down?
reading something light, singing, talking with my people, hugging my dogs, reminding myself that whatever has upset me will pass and i will be okay.
13. what is your comfort food?
okay so those of you who were close with me at the beginning of this year know that i am a huge fan of sour patch kids (essentially i ate two 2lb ,about 1kg, bags of spk in a month). i am also very much into chocolate. ice cream is big and then my biggest comfort food is chicken alfredo. favorite meal. have been having it every birthday and when ever i can get away with it for the longest time. i alsp just really like any food. i will eat what is given to me.
14. what is your feel-good show?
so much like the feel-good movies, i dont really have a feel-good show. i really enjoy a lot of shows, but i dont really do rewatches.
25. personal gift (couldnt remember the full question)
I WILL LOVE ANYTHING GIVEN TO ME. I WILL LOVE THE PERSON GIFTING ME THE THINGS. (i will also feel guilty for having you spend money or time on me like that, but thats just from being raised poor)
28. hugs or handholding?
Tumblr media
tbh im probably touch starved and i will melt into either. i dont have my hand held a lot at all so i mean.

Author: @47gaslamps For: @paralllaxes Pairings/Characters: Naomi, the SPK, Mello, Takada, Mogi, implications of Naomi/Gevanni because apparently when I decided not to write for any ship I was confining myself to the ones where the two characters even coexist in canon Rating/Warnings: Rated T, warnings for manga-only aspects and high levels of keikaku Prompt: Naomi being with the SPK (with or without Raye is the author’s choice) Author’s notes: Did not elect to include Raye. An alternate universe in which a) Raye is alive and b) the SPK exists would have had me churning the variables until the end of time like one of those supercomputers in Hitchhiker’s Guide.
In his youthful glory days, it was said that the great detective James McParland had had to train himself, on his life, never to react to the sound of his own name. And so it was with Shoko.
Long before the formation of the SPK, when Shoko (despite her ever-precarious position as an FBI agent) was in effect little more than a crank letter writer to key figures in the Hoope administration – submitting unasked-for analyses of the events surrounding the week- or weeks-long periods known as Kira’s “reposes,” or the latency of Kira’s judgments in regions such as Israel or Ethiopia; continually re-emphasizing the probability that the investigation in Japan was not being conducted by the L she had personally worked with; never sure, until last March when Director Mason approached her in person, that anyone was even bothering to look at the byline – “Naomi Misora” had already become a bland ambient phrase that failed to pique any particular attention even when her own mother used it. And she was not speaking to her mother, of late.
But Shoko Maki, unlike McParland, had the great good fortune to have erased her own name in order to live among allies and friends – even now, in the darkest hour the SPK had ever faced.
They had faced death upon death. They were, if you believed in the weight of presidential executive orders, disbanded. But here they were, alive, still united without a second thought, in a safehouse built small enough that Shoko felt, for the first time, that the five of them could properly breathe.
She had to admire Near’s preparation, she thought, watching Rester unbuckle him from the body armor. Near had thoroughly put her off at first, a boy who put on a hermetically sealed childishness like a permanent costume, whose eyes followed an elusive train of thought as though it were a gnat drifting across the room – the first chance she had to have a private word with the boy, it was unfortunate how little the details of his origins surprised her – but (she could not say this for Mello) Wammy’s House had evidently become more habitable by the time Near was entered into the rolls. He knew his own weaknesses, he genuinely respected the strengths of his colleagues, and he held to a strange honor that Shoko could not quite grasp, but could view with a dim awe.
The way he’d danced about the NPA ever since their “temporary alliance” with Kira, delicately and laboriously circling in and in, going direct for the throat of the matter only because he realized it might be his last communication on earth…
Above all, he prepared in advance: he had kept in reserve a safehouse, and a gallery of heavy-duty masked NYPD suits (enough to outfit all the original SPK, Shoko was sure, though time had been too pressing to make a count), and a vault filled with bales of hundred-dollar bills, and an industrial fan in the penthouse which he’d thought to reserve for the local propagation of vital information, and lacking any of those four elements, the SPK would almost certainly have taken losses, and the most likely loss of all would have been Near.
In that case, they would have been finished. Kira’s reign would be without challenge. Shoko knew that, now – although she imagined she would have been a lot less inclined to know it in the actual event of Near’s death. She didn’t act in rational self-interest. No one did.
As Rester began to bring the backup data bank back to life, she turned her attention back to the hostage, Kanzo Mogi. All she really knew about the man, even now, was his stolid, stubborn loyalty to the second L. The precise nature of that loyalty was not quite a resolved question. But perversely, she found her guard on him more relaxed now than she had before the strike on headquarters.
Shoko entertained no foolish notion that Mogi’s arrival had directly preceded Demegawa’s discovery of their location by sheer happenstance. That would be tantamount to drawing an insurmountable wall between Kira’s right hand and his left. No one of any sense, no one, could make that mistake. Yet if Mogi were loyal to Kira, the luster of that loyalty couldn’t but be dimmed by the knowledge that Kira had considered his life expendable.
But he might, of course, be controlled by Kira. And if not, you couldn’t assume rational self-interest. If Mogi tried anything, Shoko had to be ready for action.
Besides, the more concentration she brought to bear on Mogi, the less she could afford for the man taking guard beside her.
There was no getting around the fact of Stephen Gevanni. Stephen Gevanni, the CIA agent with the indelible trace of an English accent, whose work ethic bloomed into frightening levels of efficiency as it approached the last minute, who had told her that he had chosen to change his name and join the CIA while employed in the booming tech district of Southampton, smiling shyly as though it explained everything (and, with a little consideration for the character of the hardware and software designed there and the proximity of the city to Winchester, Shoko had to admit it explained a lot)…
…but however she got to know him, there was no getting around it: he looked a good deal like an old colleague who had carried a flame for her, a flame that had even been a spark in her own heart for a fleeting moment. A shade of the skin, the slightest shifts in the angles of the eye or the jaw, were all that distinguished his face from that of Raye Penber.
Raye had been a good man, who had always meant what was best for her. But she had soon realized that his conception of what was best – for her or for anyone – was a life fitted, as much as possible, to whatever was safest and most routine. The extraordinary effort sometimes needed to apprehend a suspect, the gratuitous thrill of a motorcycle ride, anything that went either above or beyond the strictest call of duty: these things, in Raye’s eyes, were reducible to the level of needless hazard involved.
In itself, it had been one of those unfortunate and brief flirtations that simply happened in life, a mood that came and went and scarcely left a trace. But in the black ink of the newspaper of that first December, Raye’s mark on her life had been made indelible. He had been a good man. To see his name in the list of the dead was to know, once and for all, what Kira was.
Gevanni was, in reality, very unlike him. Gevanni was far from a fearless man, but he did his utmost in spite of it. He had a secret fondness for frippery, especially in the realm of suits, which he preferred stitched by his own hand. If it came to a fight (whatever they might lead Kanzo Mogi to believe), Gevanni did not stand a chance. And, though he had been nothing but silent on the subject, Shoko was sure that some of his special skills had been refined while on the wrong side of the law.
In short, Stephen Gevanni was admirable and imperfect and compelling, a man who had survived the worst and stood with her shoulder to shoulder as the last bulwark against Kira, and there was a part of her that could not look at his face without thinking how she might mourn his death.
Of the SPK (a phrase precisely equivalent to “of the whole world”, these past few months), only Halle Lidner had heard any of this: some hours after President Sairas’s surrender, these sentiments had spilled over into their regular sparring session. Lidner won so easily she couldn’t but ask why, and Shoko, for her part, couldn’t but tell. For Lidner’s ears only. She did at times ponder, though. Perhaps, should they turn out triumphant…
Shoko shook herself out of the very reverie she had just resolved to avoid, and turned her attention back to Mogi. It was because of him that this silence prevailed around the safehouse, and most particularly the part of the silence that was hers, keeping from the words that most desperately needed to be said.
The words that Lidner, standing in point position beside the door, desperately needed to hear.
To assume rational self-interest was sometimes nothing short of foolish.
—-
It took longer than Shoko expected. But the results with the NPA were well worth the wait, and an hour after they saw Mogi off, and Aizawa, relaxation began to take hold again. Rester and Gevanni would take some time before they could compile for analysis all unique news footage of the trap they had just escaped from, Near had curled to sleep in one of the armchairs, and Shoko found her opening.
She approached Lidner almost casually. Though she would speak nothing but the truth, she had had time to consider her delivery with care.
“This new HQ makes a good change of scene, don’t you think?”
Lidner laughed. “I’m surprised you think so, Maki. Isn’t that motorcycle of yours still in the underground garage?”
In all the excitement, the last thing on her mind was her Kawasaki. But yes, of course it was there. Left to the first looter who might come back and claim it, along with all the other disused vehicles…
“But you think so too, don’t you, Lidner,” said Shoko, glancing toward the ground. “You don’t half expect…” She left the sentence hanging.
“Expect…?”
“To hear Powers babbling every last idea that comes to mind, or Mason holding forth with one of those gusts of authoritative phrases as though he’s really in charge. Or to smell one of Gardner’s furtive cigarettes. You know… all that.”
Lidner did not answer, but did close her eyes as though formulating one.
After a moment, Shoko said: “Mogi’s phone had a GPS tracker. That’s what has to have done it, right?”
Jarred out of her line of thought, Lidner only blinked and said, “Probably.”
“And it didn’t occur to anyone to confiscate his devices on his way to New York,” said Shoko flatly. “Knowing he was working with Kira.”
“The plan required his cell phone,” Lidner reminded her.
“Not necessarily.” Shoko looked her dead in the eye. “Not if Mello could have been in the main data room right along with us.”
“You know that would never happen, Maki,” said Lidner, her voice coming across with much less strength than her face. She was catching on. “Some passcodes are one use only.”
“Yes. We determined it would never happen, because his presence posed a threat. A threat that the SPK could easily neutralize. But he recognized our desire for distance. Near’s desire for reconciliation. And Kira’s desire to eliminate the SPK.”
A long silence.
“And yet,” said Lidner at last, “we’re alive. And in a stronger position than ever before.”
“You think he intended to fail.”
“It was a blow against Kira,” said Lidner, her confidence waxing again. “Mello doesn’t have much in the way of personal resources, these days, but I can guarantee you he would be glad to strike at Kira any way he can.”
Excepting the final strike, of course, if it were done by anyone but himself. There was no need to bother voicing something so obvious, though.
“What do you think are the chances that Kira intended to fail?”
“No chance at all,” agreed Lidner at once, “but Mello had something that Kira lacked.”
Shoko waited for elaboration.
“Ratt’s information.” Lidner, to her credit, offered these words a bit gingerly.
“I don’t suppose he’s told you what that information entailed?” said Shoko coldly. “Apart from the true identities of thirty-four of our colleagues?”
“Of course not,” she snapped. “But I do know that every one of the preparations that saved us was in place when Ratt was still with us. If nothing else, he certainly would have talked about the cash in the vault. And you remember he had access to the vault with the skyscraper’s blueprints?”
Yes. Shoko remembered. But their escape had still been far from a sure thing. “We backed Kira into a corner. Mello benefits. I’ll grant you that. If we were dragged out and exposed to the cameras… that would also benefit Mello.“
“It wouldn’t.”
“No,” agreed Shoko. “But this is a man who literally blew himself up. He’s probably up to figuratively shooting himself in the foot.”
She turned to where Near lay sleeping, curled below the screens where Demegawa screamed silently into Gevanni’s headset that they be given as a sacrifice to Kira, and she looked back on Lidner with pity and compassion.
“Why are you so eager to call him an ally? You tell him all we know about Kira, you block me from tackling him to the ground the instant he lets his guard down, and now you defend him…”
Lidner was matter-of-fact. “If you’d tackled him to the ground, that would have been a blow to his pride he’d never forgive.”
“Considering what a blow to his pride our existence is, I suppose I don’t want to see what it would be like if he didn’t forgive us.”
Lidner sighed, drew herself up an office chair and sat. “Listen, Maki. I do have an answer to your question.”
She paused a moment, and this time, Shoko took time to sit herself, and let Lidner get her thoughts together. If either of them became intransigent now, no good would come of it.
“During the arrest of Kyosuke Higuchi. Near’s source said the two shots that took out Higuchi’s front tire, and blasted the gun from his hand, came from a private helicopter. A helicopter that had been on the scene prior to the arrival of the police blockade.”
Shoko was clearly supposed to grasp something here, but she was lost.
“Well? Don’t you think it was L in that helicopter?”
“I don’t think so, actually,” said Shoko thoughtfully. “You need good posture to fire with that kind of accuracy from a distance.”
“I–” Lidner looked up, flabbergasted. “Are you telling me you know what the original L’s posture was like?”
“Yes,” she said quietly. “I met him. Only once, but–”
“What happened?” asked Lidner eagerly.
Shoko flushed dimly, wishing she had a better story. “He attacked me. I kicked him down a flight of stairs. I gather it was supposed to be some sort of test.”
“There!” whispered Lidner (Near had just snorted in his sleep). “That’s just what I mean to say! And the helicopter– if it wasn’t L, it was someone acting on L’s orders. Watari, or… well, it wasn’t anyone involved in the raid on Mello’s fortress, or he would never have had a chance to use the detonator. A crack shot, identity unknown. But that’s not the point. Is that an order Near would ever give?”
“No,” Shoko allowed. “But wasn’t this supposed to be your argument to justify Mello? Mello would just have blown Higuchi’s head clean off.”
“You say that like it would be a problem,” muttered Lidner bitterly. “But– I mean, you’re right. Of course you are. Mello is built to shoot first and ask questions later. But Near– he’s built more like your FBI man. He asks questions, and asks more questions, and only at the very last resort can he bring himself to shoot. If Mello isn’t there to shoot on his behalf, maybe… maybe he won’t see the last resort coming.”
Shoko felt the blood drain from her face, and her hands become vises around her armrests. To dredge up her private confidence about Raye, just for the sake of winning an argument that needed to be lost–
“There’s another possibility,” Shoko said, levelly, as though at a remove from her own body. “With regard to the helicopter. It might have been Kira taking those shots.”
She took a deep and shaking breath.
“We know that, at some point, Kira took L’s place. We know L was dead a week after that arrest. We don’t know how either of these things came to pass, but there is one way it might have come about. L might have found Kira useful. A crack shot, perhaps, and almost certainly a top-notch thinker… and what did it matter that he was a known murderer, if they were aligned in the same cause?”
Lidner stood and turned away, her eyes shut tight. She had no answer.
—-
The rift between Lidner and Shoko, though convenient for their cover, remained, very real, until the arrival of the plastic molding kit.
Rester had suggested (with all due respect, of course, and the edge in the voice that invariably came with the phrase) that all these special-order toys, like Mello’s chocolate trucks, posed a security risk, especially the Lego dolls ordered to resemble Kiyomi Takada and Light Yagami. Near – and Shoko was not sure this was an exaggeration – would sooner die than give up a chance to use toys as visual aids, but the kit was a reasonable compromise.
And so, in the lull before Gevanni’s last big operation, Rester, Halle and Shoko (but not Gevanni; tailing Mikami was always top priority) took one of Takada’s days off to watch Near craft the toys he thought he might need in the coming days. Mostly, what he thought he needed turned out to be soft plastic finger puppets. The SPK and the NPA were a bit caricatured, Near included. Mello, Misa, Takada and Mikami were caricatured to the point of political cartoon. And the portrayal of Kira, in one of Near’s strokes of sheer childish spite, was simply a cut-rate Hamburglar.
“But what on earth is this?” said Shoko, holding up a just-cooled mask in perplexity. It had a round face, blue matted hair, puffy bulging eyes, and weirdly puckered lips. “I can certainly understand wearing a mask to meet the second L, but why this particular mask?”
“I believe it’s a face Light Yagami will recognize.”
Halle Lidner looked from Near to Shoko, and then from Shoko to Near again, with increasing incredulity. “Near. Am I to gather that you have never actually met L?”
Near’s mouth turned up toward a cheek in irritation. “No, actually. I was merely operating on reliable and corroborated description. Pale skin the same color as his lips, dark unkempt hair, large eyes with deep shadows underneath. Is that not all correct?”
“How is it possible that L’s heir never met L?” Shoko demanded.
Near sighed and flopped back-first onto the floor, staring up at the ceiling. “In point of fact, it was because I was L’s heir. To be correct: one of the two. It was maybe a year before the Kira case that he paid a personal visit to Wammy’s House. Everyone went out to meet him, Mello included – it was a bigger event than three Christmases put together – but as for me, I stayed behind. I was sure he would want to speak with me privately, and if not, he would take the extra trouble anyway. Turned out, he was equally stubborn in passively drawing me out. Which made it a losing battle on my part. He left just as scheduled, and I had to get all the details second-hand.”
His eyes rested on Shoko. “But I gather you can set me straight. The records do say you once worked with L.” He rolled back into his regular crouch and smiled in that gooey way that always meant mischief. “All right. Let’s do this properly. But for future reference, Maki, there are some work history details you really ought to mention to your employers.”
Halle laughed.
—-
Taking up half Takada’s personal security detail had seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospect it was a waste of limited manpower. Takada was careful enough about her private communications that even her most trusted bodyguards never accompanied her inside her apartment suite; the only thing that proved of interest about her schedule otherwise was that she was always in meetings at one o'clock on Thursdays; and all that remained was to help accost the hostile riffraff a beautiful and politically outspoken celebrity inevitably accumulated.
The riffraff surrounding Miss Takada did not generally survive being accosted.
But her evening escort was mercifully without event, and all that remained was to smilingly endure the nine-o’-clock news. Tomorrow, if Mikami kept writing (Shoko was reminded that she and Halle weren’t the only SPK members complicit in Kira’s crimes at this moment), Gevanni would give the go-ahead to set the meeting. So much had been set in stone, so far in advance, and yet there were loose ends that no one had even considered tying up. Mello, lovingly immortalized though he was as Chucky the Living Doll, was still at large, and even the precise substance of these secret communications with Mikami Teru and Light Yagami…
“Good-evening-miss-takada,” mumbled the receptionist automatically as they passed. Megumi Kato, her name was. The epitome of a seat-warmer. She did what was plainly required of her, and then checked out. Not an option for an attache of Shoko’s prestige, unfortunately. A bodyguard had to take the initiative.
Yes. She did have to take the initiative. And Megumi Kato was her ticket to doing so.
During the evening broadcast, Shoko wrote a hasty notice, and, when she was sure Kato wasn’t really listening, delivered it to her and, without unnecessarily perking her ears by mentioning Takada’s name, told her to be sure to pass it along. By 10:05, the customary “good-night-miss-takada” assured her all was indeed well.
The following evening, with escort duty falling to one of the honest bodyguards, Shoko Maki arrived at Takada’s home alongside Gevanni, who was dressed as a professional locksmith. (Rester could tail Mikami for a day. He couldn’t confirm he was still writing, but that meant only twenty-four more hours before plans solidified beyond repair. Besides, she remembered with a squirm, Shoko’s preparations had really left Near no choice.)
Once inside, just as she had outlined in the note she left with Kato, she set out to make a complete security inventory of Takada’s living quarters. The points of entry (the windows were sealed and bulletproof, but the door, by the very fact that the search could be carried out, needed biometric scanners). The microphones and security cameras (all confirmed as NHN property, but numbered just in case). Any point at which a person might lie in hiding or a bomb might be placed to greatest effect. She’d borrowed Gevanni’s minicamera for documentation purposes. On occasion, she needed to call him over to get another lock. For the benefit of the cameras, she carried herself with brusque efficiency, punctuated only by the occasional comment and the click of the camera.
And when Gevanni unlocked the top left desk drawer and they both saw the sheaf of lined paper coated in names – perhaps she had visibly hesitated, or perhaps time had simply hung suspended for a moment – the photograph was made completely without comment, and the inventory went on.
They re-armed all the locks, proceeded out of the complex, and then out of the building. Shoko took one deep drag of the January air, and suddenly found her head swimming, the grey evening turning dark and green, and she fell to her knees into the brittle dead grass.
“We never did find those hotel notepads,” Gevanni observed wryly, from somewhere high above.
She laughed an unreasonable length over that, and just when she thought it was over, the fit took her again.
At long last she looked up through her tears into the haunting face of Stephen Gevanni. He was visibly sweating, propping himself up against the exterior wall for support.
“Let’s call headquarters,” she suggested.

Re: Matsuda’s Theory about Near’s Victory
Guess who’s back on the mission of reposting their old posts? I tweaked this one a little to better reflect my current thoughts. Carry on, good people.
This wasn’t at all my pet project, but I’d been meaning to write this analysis for ages and I just left it on the back burner because time is a thing that sadly only exists in limited quantities. I’d mentioned months ago that I feel like taking the events at the warehouse at face value made odd, arguably out of character assumptions about various players involved. I’d specifically mentioned Mikami Teru back then, but I feel this is true for Near as well.
Now to make something absolutely clear from the start, I don’t hate Near. Let’s just get that straight so this doesn’t obfuscate the point. Near is my favorite Wammy kid and this analysis is not about trying to delegitimize the sheep’s win. The phrasing “Near cheats” is not my own, but rather it’s Obata’s from How to Read 13 in discussing Near’s character. I personally don’t see how it is possible to “cheat” in a game where the rules of engagement are ill-defined in the first place, but that’s just my view of it. The way I see it, Near takes a lot of effort to ensure Kira’s downfall as well as the safety of the people around him, and I think the degree of it is somewhat overlooked. Let’s give the sheep credit where it’s due.
For those who are unfamiliar with Matsuda’s proposed theory about the events that took place at the warehouse, it’s the one he explains in Chapter 108.
Tumblr media
So I don’t cap the entire theory, I’ll summarize here. Matsuda puts forth the intriguing theory that Near writes Mikami’s name into the Death Note to prevent him from confirming whether the notebook he brought to the warehouse was real. Lending credence to this theory is the fact that Mikami died after “going crazy” ten days after the events of the warehouse.
I want to talk about this in depth. Matsuda’s theory is shrugged off and dismissed as biased and pointless by Ide, but that doesn’t mean we, the readers, should follow suit in devaluing Matsuda’s reasoning. Personally, I think Matsuda is onto something, and hopefully this post will stir up some interesting conversations!
The circumstances of Mikami’s death are fascinating, but for now let’s hone in on the timing of the man’s death. Assuming for a moment that Near does write Mikami’s name into the notebook, the earliest he could have done so is January 26th 2010 as this is the day Mikami goes to the bank and inadvertently reveals the whereabouts of the real death note to the SPK. Mikami dies February 7th 2010. Thirteen days have passed.
As you’ve probably guessed, what I’m getting at here is the fact that Mikami dies well within the 23 day limit in which a person’s actions can be controlled before their death. That alone is, of course, insufficient to establish any certainty that Near did write Mikami’s name in the note, but it does get you thinking.
As I mentioned previously, in discussing Near’s character in HTR13, Obata states that he thinks Near is the smartest character because he cheats. I find this a curious statement considering we don’t see any explicit evidence of Near cheating anywhere in canon. That said, I’m not terribly fond of using HTR13 as evidence of anything as I think canon ought to take precedence.
However, I do think it’s worth keeping HTR13 mind as it provides some insight into Ohba’s thought process in writing for each character. So let’s take a quick look at Mikami’s HTR13 stats below. Apologies for the low quality on this mangacap; sadly there just aren’t any high quality scans of the English HTR13 around to use.
Tumblr media
Of particular note, we have intelligence at 8/10. initiative 8/10, emotional strength at 10/10 and loyalty at 10/10. The absolute numbers aren’t important per se, but I bring them up because Mikami was clearly written to be a smart, driven, resilient and loyal guy.
I’ll come back to the latter traits later, let’s focus on Mikami’s intelligence first. We know the guy is canonically quite sharp. He attends Kyodo University  (a reference to Kyoto University – the equivalent of an Ivy League university in Japan) and that he passes the Japanese Bar exam (司法試験 shihō shiken) on his first try. We know this because by the time Kira is first active in November 2003, Mikami is twenty-one, freshly out of college and already a prosecutor.
The Japanese bar, I might add, is notoriously difficult with only a pass rate of 2% prior to 2006 before reforms were implemented. (Source) Mikami was a prosecutor by 2003 so that absurdly low pass rate still applies to him. TL;DR the guy is impressive.
Okay. we’ve established that Mikami clearly has a good head on his shoulders. So next what’s interesting is the fact that Mikami was fully aware that he was actually being followed by Gevanni.
Keep in mind that that for the panels I’m referencing there are three key points to remember:
1. Light and Mikami are actively in correspondence through Kiyomi (Not true in the third referenced scene) 2. Kiyomi is the person doing the actual killings by writing names on the pages of the real notebook that Mikami sends her. 3. Mikami is aware that the plan is to make it appear as though he is responsible for the current Kira killings while he writes in a fake notebook.
So in this scene below where Mikami murders the creep on the train, Mikami is doing it for the benefit of an audience.  (And also, lbr, he hates unrighteous chikan too.)
Tumblr media
There’s more evidence of this as well. In that sort of infamous scene where OMG MIKAMI IS TALKING TO HIMSELF!!!!!, Mikami is again doing it for the benefit of an audience.
Tumblr media
So here he is on the roof of the district attorney’s building, seemingly randomly talking to himself. However, it’s not actually random. Mikami knows Ryuk isn’t there – he can see that just fine for himself. However, it’s important for the people following him to know A) there isn’t a shinigami following him and B) there hasn’t been one following him for a while. Why? Because when the SPK inevitably touch the fake death note he carries around, there needs to be a credible reason for why they don’t see a shinigami materializing before them. They cannot entertain the possibility that there is no shinigami because the note is fake, thus Mikami preemptively explains the discrepancy.
And finally, we have this scene.
Tumblr media
For the very first time in the entire period that Gevanni is following Mikami, Mikami shows a sign of awareness that someone could be following him.
So if Mikami is definitely aware that he’s being followed, isn’t it a little odd that Mikami, a man who clearly isn’t afraid to take initiative (see the way he murders Demegawa and Kiyomi without instructions), possesses above average intelligence and knew that his fake death note was being modified by the person following him (he studies it with a microscope), would simply leave the bank empty handed that same day without taking at least a page of the real note with him just in case? Or at the very least, Isn’t it weird that Mikami doesn’t actually test the Death Note on a criminal the next day before showing up at the warehouse just to confirm that the note hadn’t been in any way modified? These are both very simple, logical solutions to problems that are raised by leading Gevanni to the real note. After all, it’s only logical to conclude that whoever is tailing him might try and get access to his bank safety deposit box, discover the real death note and then make sure to neutralize its utility for January 28th.
Of course, what canonically ends up happening is that Mikami doesn’t appear to take a single step to check if the note works or not on January 28th.  But it doesn’t really make sense for Mikami to exhibit such a serious lapse in judgment.
At this point, let’s shift gears and talk about Near for a moment because it also doesn’t make sense for Near, who is canonically a genius, to assume that Mikami wouldn’t have done something to ensure that he could kill everyone at the warehouse the following day or that Light wouldn’t have told Mikami to confirm the note worked that morning.
Near, up to that point, had been operating on the assumption that Light is an idiot. It takes Mello kidnapping Kiyomi to inadvertently stir Mikami into action for Near to realize that Light actually wanted Near to be lulled into a false sense of security with Mikami’s predictability. Note that Near also thinks Mikami is an idiot. In Near’s mind, Kira worshippers are idiots by default to Near by virtue of their beliefs, so naturally it doesn’t even cross his mind to question why on earth X-Kira is taking unnecessary risks by killing people while he’s physically at the scene of a crime. Of course, in reality, Mikami had played his part to perfection and had successfully tricked everyone in the SPK, Near included.
After Near learns about the real note, he’s forced to confront the fact that he had completely underestimated both Light and Mikami’s intellects and had played right into Kira’s hands for months. Had Mello not serendipitously made his move, Near and the SPK would have all been murdered. Near admits as much during the confrontation at the warehouse; he’d been so catastrophically wrong about his enemies and it would have cost him everything had he not taken action.
Of course, the action he outright admits to is having Gevanni make a duplicate of the real notebook in Mikami’s safety deposit box and switch the two.
But does it really make logical sense for Near to simply stop there, when he suspects that pages ripped out of the notebook could still have the full capacity to kill? When he knows how easy it would be for Mikami to check if the note works before heading to Daikoku Wharf?
It doesn’t seem particularly in character, at least in my opinion, for Near to simply disregard either possibility and assume Mikami won’t think to do anything at all -- especially not right after his assumptions about his enemies had been proven to be terribly wrong. And in fact, considering this…
Tumblr media
….is literally one of the first questions Near asks Ryuk, we know that this possibility was clearly one that Near considered heavily.
And if Near did consider it, he must have accounted for it rather than leaving the results of the warehouse up to chance. It just, again, doesn’t make sense for Near to not have a contingency plan in place precisely because so many lives beside his own were at stake at the warehouse.
The answer that addresses both the conundrum about Mikami’s lapse in judgment and Near’s own strategizing is simple. We’re right back at Matsuda’s theory that Near does write Mikami’s name into the Death Note specifically to prevent any potential Mikami shenanigans from happening on January 28th.
This is easily accomplished by writing something along the lines of:
“Mikami Teru brings the fake notebook from his bank vault to the Yellowbox Warehouse on January 28th. He does not test the note or bring any pages or scraps of the real death note with him to carry out his instructions.”
Personally I think this much is canon. Near is not the type to gamble his life and the lives of the coworkers and the Japanese Task Force members who’d been working tirelessly to put an end to the Kira case on the back of a deeply misguided hope that Mikami didn’t take the most basic of precautions. We know Near is intelligent. For Near to even think “maybe Mikami will be stupid and everything will turn out fine” would show that he has learned nothing from his initial mistake of underestimating his opponents. Put simply; it’s just not like Near to be this stubborn or naive.
Writing Mikami’s name into the note doesn’t appear to go against Near’s ethical codes of conduct either.
Tumblr media
As Near himself states in that scene, he’s a pragmatist who doesn’t believe in absolutes in morality.  People have to decide for themselves what’s right and what’s wrong. In this case, I think Near would have concluded that putting the lives of innocent people at risk and potentially sending them to the warehouse like lambs to the slaughterhouse when he could eliminate that risk is unjustifiable.
As for why I don’t think Near writes Light’s name into the note, it’s because forcing a confession is meaningless. In other words, Near wants to establish Light’s guilt with evidence not by playing Simon Says. (Plus, if Near had written Light’s name into the note, Ryuk wouldn’t have been able to kill Light himself).
As further food for thought though, if Near does in fact write Mikami’s name into the death note, this leads to some really interesting questions about what else  Near wrote into the notebook to control Mikami’s actions as well as how Mikami dies.
From here on out, this is purely speculative on my part, but I’m bringing it up because this is fun and I’m really curious to know what other people’s thoughts are on this.
Think back to Mikami’s HTR13 stats from before, 10/10 loyalty, 10/10 emotional strength and the fact that we see neither of his dominant traits on display at the warehouse considering he has a meltdown and calls god “trash.” Additionally think back to what Matsuda says about Mikami’s death. He “went crazy“ and died. Of course, psychosis isn’t a cause of death, but it can lead to tremendously self-injurious behaviors and suicidality, which is what I assume Matsuda meant.
Here you may be wondering why would Near write this? Well, he does actually benefit from Mikami’s insanity. See, if Mikami is simply remembered as “that lunatic” people then are naturally disinclined to analyze Mikami’s behavior in depth. (“So what Mikami was acting weirdly at the warehouse, he was clearly a mad man.”) Or in other words, it helps cover up tracks that perhaps Near didn’t want made apparent.
There are some cues in the warehouse scene itself that suggest that Mikami is already unravelling at the warehouse even  before Light’s downfall. Mikami pulling all sorts of crazed expressions is basically a meme in the fandom, so a lot of people are aware that the way Mikami physically looks and presents himself is completely different from how he usually carried himself prior to that point.
Take for example, Mikami’s usual pleasant expression.
Tumblr media
He scowls a lot and is generally well put together. Composed, if you will.
And this is the expression Mikami pulls when he confirms that god is real.
Tumblr media
This is arguably one of the best moments of Mikami’s entire life and it’s still a normal facial expression as facial expressions go.
Next this is Teru’s face when he’s literally speaking to god on the phone and is already acting as god’s right hand.
Tumblr media
Again this is arguably one of the best moments of Mikami’s life. You can tell he’s thrilled and excited about this, but again, it’s not twisted, it’s not alarming. He still has that composure to him with his hand placed respectfully over his chest as he pledges his loyalty to Kira.
And then we have this outlier.
Tumblr media
Seriously. Who is this guy and which circle of hell did he come from?
Granted there is a tremendous amount of context that needs to be accounted for in this panel because this is, after all, the moment that Mikami has been chosen, hand picked by god, to eliminate his enemies!! The Dream!! There is no question that it’s the highest honour of his entire life….
…And yet there’s a total disruption in the way he presents himself. He smiles manically, he looks unhinged and about ready to unravel at the seams — and it makes one wonder if “went crazy” was something that was already happening right before everyone’s eyes.
So if Mikami was specifically written into the note to apparently have a psychotic break and die ten days later, it raises an interesting question. How much of Mikami’s behavior in the warehouse was a product of Mikami’s own volition?
Were the sakujogasms a lie?! /soblol.
Thanks for reading!

Roche Delays Spark Deal Once More to Gain Regulatory Nod (2)
September 3 has arrived, and Roche still can't move forward on its $4.8 billion Spark Therapeutics buyout. And once again, U.S. and U.K. anti-competition delays are the problem.
The Swiss drugmaker pushed back its $114.50-per-share offer for Spark shareholders to Oct. 1, after Tuesday's deadline yielded less than a quarter of shares tendered and no approval yet from antitrust regulators.
Same as with the previous extensions, Roche said it's providing “additional time for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority to complete” their reviews of the acquisition, Roche said in a statement.
Perhaps unsure of the antitrust evaluation timeline, most Spark shareholders are still on the fence; as of last Friday, only 24.1% of Spark’s outstanding shares had been tendered, down from 25.2% when the previous delay was unveiled in July.
Roche CEO Severin Schwan has repeatedly said his company is confident the Spark transaction will close by the end of this year. And in a Tuesday statement to FiercePharma, a Roche spokesperson confirmed that target. Nevertheless, the two parties have agreed to move back the merger deadline to April 30, 2020.
Back in June, the two companies said they had received a “second request” from the FTC for documents about the deal and disclosed that the CMA had opened its own probe. Now, nearly three months have passed, and industry watchers still don’t know for sure what the agencies are worried about.
Through Spark, Roche hopes to buy into the gene therapy arena and extend its hemophilia franchise. While Roche’s hem A drug Hemlibra is rocketing toward the blockbuster mark—with 2019 first-half sales of CHF 535 million ($540 million)—investigational gene therapies such as Spark’s SPK-8011 and BioMarin’s valoctocogene roxaparvovec could pose a threat to its growth.
“Investigational” is the key word, though, as analysts believe the Spark therapy is still risky and has a clear competitor in the BioMarin candidate.
If the hemophilia field is indeed what’s taking the FTC so long, it wouldn’t be the first puzzling antitrust review for the industry this year. To seal its $74 billion takeover of Celgene, Bristol-Myers Squibb recently agreed to sell Celgene’s psoriasis drug Otezla; the FTC was concerned about its potential overlap with Bristol's BMS-986165 candidate, though it works differently from the Celgene med. Industry watchers have yet to figure out why the FTC considered combining those two meds at one company as a problem.
But the sale will deliver a chunk of cash to BMS: Amgen agreed to buy Otezla for $13.4 billion, which analysts are calling a premium price. Amgen already markets the megablockbuster TNF psoriasis therapy Enbrel, but the company says it’s confident the FTC will grant the green light.

Hi bestie tysm, it’s 3am rn so I’m just gonna incoherently ramble about anything I’ve ever wanted to say about spk. This might be long absjjsja but hopefully it works out.
The spk au was formed when I listened to the song soldier, poet, king and decided to assign each of the triplets a verse. Everything else came after that. I think that this happened sometime in May 2020, so I guess it was like a seven month journey from then to when I started posting the fic in December ajdkksjahs. I wrote the whole thing on my phone bc I hadn’t gotten a laptop yet, and then I manually retyped everything onto the laptop when I got it.
Spk takes place in a medieval setting. Scrooge McDuck was the king of the kingdom, but he went into hiding after a war with Magica DeSpell ended in disaster. He’d sent Della and Donald away with newly hatched HDL when it was getting bad, but enemy soldiers caught up with them and got the best of Della. Only Donald returns to the castle, and both him and Scrooge assume that HDL were a casualty along with their mother when in reality, Della had managed to save them by hiding them in the wagon of some travelers. After Della’s death, Scrooge abandons his duties as king and goes into hiding, Donald leaves to handle his grief elsewhere, and HDL are separated and grow up without each other, without knowing who they are or where they came from. The only clue they have is a medallion that has been split into three equal pieces, and they each have one, though Huey isn’t aware of it until later. The story starts twelve years after the war, when HDL finally start to find each other. More about them:
Dewey in the au is the "Soldier", having run away from the orphanage when he was six and stowing away on Webby and Mrs. Beakley’s wagon. Mrs. B is something of a self-defense instructor, mostly teaching sword fighting, so she and Webbs travel around a lot. They let Dewey stay when they find him, because of course they do, so Dewey spends the next six years learning how to use a sword alongside Webby and traveling all over the place for Beakley’s business. The traveling is how he meets Louie.
Louie is the "Poet", unlucky enough to have grown up in a rundown village filled with shady people in an orphanage with only a few other kids. The orphanage shut down when he was seven, at which point he was left to fend for himself on the streets, having to learn how to con and steal and run and hide. (Maybe he had a mentor, at some point, to help him with that 😏) He struggles to survive for years before he finally meets Dewey, and it doesn’t exactly get easier after that shskskjsjsjs.
Huey is the "King" in this au, having been found and adopted by a defeated Magica DeSpell who hoped to have a bargaining chip to use against Scrooge in the future. Lena mostly took care of him until he could do it on his own, and though both Magica and Lena know where Huey came from, they never told him. Huey lives in a large house in a well-off village, and he visits the lab nearby often to do experiments and escape loneliness and hang around Gyro and Fenton and all those other science folks.
I TOOK A BREAK AND NOW IT'S ALMOST NOON NOW SO HERE WE GO.
When Magica finally gets sick and tired of not being able to find Scrooge to suitably threaten him, she hands Huey over into the custody of the Beagle Boys, who throw him in their wagon and take off across the country on their way back to Ma Beagle. They make a short stop in the same shady village that Louie happens to live in.
Dewey meets Louie when Mrs. Beakley's business takes them to his village. Webby buys an apple and Louie tries to steal it from her, but Dewey catches him. Webby lets him have the apple anyway and Dewey lets him go, but stumbles upon him later when he gets himself in trouble with the Beagle Boys. Dewey tries to save him, but they're both captured and thrown into the wagon, where they meet Huey. They're carted out of the village and away from help, and it's up to them now to save themselves.
And that's the setup for the rest of the story ajskdkfsd.
I included as many characters in the story as I could, especially the rather lengthy list of villains that Magica has in her back pocket. Launchpad was a lot of fun too asdjjksa but of course my favorite thing to write was the triplets and the relationships they build over the course of their adventure. The cave scene where they find out about the medallion always sticks in my mind the most because it feels like one of the biggest turning points. I think actually one of my favorite things about spk was Louie's slow journey to trust Huey and Dewey and accepting them as his siblings. I was really happy with that asjdksa.
Also one of my favorite little details that I didn't write much about was the fact that Louie's best friend was a cat. I love the mental image of young Louie feeding a scrawny little kitten and then it doesn't leave him alone after that. She follows him around and keeps coming back and Louie names her Knots because her fur is tangly and he feeds her scraps when he can barely feed himself some days. Maybe she rides in his hood and peeks up over his shoulder idk. I'm planning a Knots and Louie reunion for the sequel because they deserve it and I want to <3
Here's some random facts about the process of making spk.
Huey's vest was originally going to be a grey jacket, but it was too similar to Dewey's outfit so I changed it.
Dewey's undershirt was originally going to be black, but light blue made more sense and matched with canon so ajsdkkjasd
Before I retyped everything onto my laptop, spk was only around 90,000 words. I guess the other 10,000 just sort of happened when editing.
I was originally going to have Donald reunite with the boys at the end of spk along with Scrooge, but I decided to save that for later and focus on one at a time. The fact that he left kind of reflects what happened in canon after the spear of selene.
Its 2 in the morning my time for bad decisions. Gonna go out on limb. @stargaze-sunflower I want to hear all about your Ducktales Soldier, Poet, King au. Love hearing people rant and your au is so intresting to me.

The Knee Jerk
The answer came sooner and faster than expected with bar boy ( formally known as a head boy), my gut instinct had been right and maybe I should have listened to it earlier but that is a lesson learnt. After the invite to go to the concert on Monday, Friday night comes around with no mention of it again. I message on Friday at 11 pm - to ask what the plan is for Saturday. He replies, “Apparently my little brother gave the ticket to his bf”. Half an hour follows; with a so sorry and you probably hate me.
This is the moment where I should have slept on it and replied in the morning, but I replied… “ To be honest it was kind of expected. It’s just the principle that you keep suggesting things and flaking. What is it you want? If you wanted causal I was giving you that it didn’t need to be complicated. I can’t deal with you flip-flopping… don’t ask me to the movies if you can’t / don’t want to go. Don’t ask me to dinner if you can't/ don’t want to go. Don’t ask me to a concert and then only tell me when I ask you. I don’t hate you, though I'm not sure I want to keep seeing you. I have had this same conversation with you time again.. I just don’t really get it “ That was the thing It wasn’t even about the concert for me, if he messaged me in the week or even Thursday when we were talking, to tell me and be like “ fuck sorry”, he waits till the eleventh hour of the day before to tell me and only when I reach out to him! It's rude not to mention the continuous let down (which I still don’t understand). Why even invite me out? We had it casual and it was working. He kept asking me out to then not follow through - I could have also shut down these concepts but I was feeling confused. I had told him, that he didn’t need to invite me out. That triggered a lot for me, from being let down in the past and ‘empty promises’. I don’t regret my reply though of course, I was mulling it over. His response made it clear the type of person he was, immature and not even an ounce of understanding, just own your shit; “ Sorry I’m a piece of shit”, “ You can hate me I don’t mind”, “ My little bro who I love more than anyone wins every day of the week… surely you understand that he has been through hell”, “ See ya then I guess”. He was playing up the pity party but he had no attendees. The cheek of him trying to make me feel guilty! He was reacting. I said “ You don’t get where I’m coming from at all! It’s not about the concert, it's not about tomorrow. Stoked your brother gets to go. It's you are confusing the fuck out of me about what you want - you ask me out and then flake. I don’t get why? Cause you seem to want only casual too and I thought we had it good. And it took me to message you for you tell me… that is all the shit stuff that gets me. I don’t think you are sorry, you are just like 'see ya then’ without even trying to understand how it might feel”. Shots fired.
It made it easy to make a decision, well considering that he also states in the same sentence “ Well I don’t want to hurt you that’s all. I give up, thanks for the ride”. Followed by “ You deserve better”. I give up! I need to meet someone who has emotional maturity that’s going on the list. We were fuck buddies, maybe we just didn’t set clear expectations from the outset. I have an inkling that he will regret his “knee jerk” reaction, that he will realise when it is too late and message me. We were having fun and our hangouts were great, maybe I had read it wrong though time will tell. He said he was confused as well the last couple of weeks and we had never talked much emotions or interests with each other any further. I don’t hate him, I did have a soft spot for him. I am also very clear that he won’t be in my picture moving forward. I ended my final message on a positive light “ All the best, enjoy the concert”. I was talking about it with my friend, AR the next day, I was double guessing the messages I sent. She said that I handled it the way that makes me, ‘ME.’ I needed to get it off my chest and tell him how I felt otherwise I would have found a way to say it later - which is so completely true. I got the closure and everything off my chest up front rather than holding it on, it just was a little reactive and a lot of ‘you’.  My post about my confusion and what I wanted without more commitment should have been making those expectations clear with him and not waiting till he let me down ( which is what I was expecting to happen). I happily own how I handled this situation and took a lot of learnings away. It was natural for feelings to get in the way. We were seeing each other casually for 3 months! That's a long-ass time. He was right about one thing; I do deserve a shitload better.
This is now my time to focus on me. No more boys ( which I’m sure I have been annoying the fuck out of my friends the past year talking non stop about them). They bring me down. It’s time to plan my travel escape from Sydney, it's time to learn and adventure, it's time to get better sleep and focus on my training. I feel euphoric today, so happy I can’t stop smiling like a maniac. I've had such a great weekend; I went out on Friday with workmates, Saturday I got locked out the house, but it was a great excuse to be out, I had coffee, I sat in the sun for an hour, I face timed AR, I had burgers with my weightlifting squad, I chilled in the gym with my mate as he deadlifted, then I spent time with my flatmate we got snacks and watched a movie followed by a face time by SPK and FJ - which had me lit up like a Christmas tree I was grinning from ear to ear. I would have had that call with them over Fleetwood any day. Sunday is upon us - I have blogged, grocery shopped, had my nails done, spoke to my Dad and now ready to meal prep, go for a run before the sun goes down then continue some writing and reading before I head to bed. Now that’s what I call a weekend done right!

@unofficial-deathnotetober day 5: original and copy
i will permit NO near slander on this post (also they're non binary because i say so)
Near lay on the cold floor, fiddling with the card in their hand, a 4 of spades.
The deck was brand new. They had picked it out at a small corner shop near the SPK’s headquarters in Los Angeles. Their old one had faded over time, having been a Christmas gift from L himself 15 years ago.
They had plenty of others that they used, but that one always felt special.
They had made the tough call to throw it away about a week prior, and picked this one out by themself.
A way to signify that they were no longer tied to their history at Wammy's? Perhaps.
To be honest, Near had never liked L to begin with. He had lost the game, and Near had to win it for him. He took too many risks, so Near had to pull more strings behind the scenes.
L had made plenty of mistakes, and that was proved by his death.
So why did it feel wrong to become him?
They had known that the alias of L would be passed down to them from the moment they were given the title of number one.
It was arrogant of them, but it was clear what the outcome would be as soon as Mello started treating their relationship as more of a rivalry than a partnership.
And what became of Mello? He was killed a mere three months after stepping into the ring.
A small, infinitesimal part of Near missed him, but they also knew that his death was necessary.
All of their deaths were necessary.
They caught Kira, didn’t they?
L could have solved the case without sacrificing all of those lives.
But he didn’t.
And Near didn’t either.
Those FBI agents, the SPK…
L, Mello, and Matt.
Their deaths were necessary, right?
Light Yagami had been nothing but a mass murderer, but he was still L for five years.
He had been but a poor imitation, but was Near anything more?
To the general public, they were still the same L.
Near just had to pick up the pieces that the Kira case had left.
“I am just a copy,” they muttered.
But they knew, deep down, that they were more than that.

I believe the catholic church has been and is - involved in keeping me living like this - through its fraternal org - kcs - nationwide - it has knowingly and intentionally undertaken a coordinated - systematic effort to marginalize me - and conceal evidence of such - using materials and methods taken from chemical warfare and/or pest control - this series of aggravated battery has not escaped prosecution - they were accused by me and charged - they used their political power to evade judgement - found liable - they have continued with the exact course of conduct which formed the basis of the original claim - I believe that those that might want to speak out against this nationwide campaign - extending for a period of time longer than twenty years - have been told that speaking truthfully about my situation risks their relationship w/ the church - im not catholic - my family is catholic - those people should be able to say what they think is true w/ out the church telling them that doing so means they will go to hell

Harvard biochemist Matthew Meselson now admits that his original "bee feces" theory of Southeast Asian yellow-rain deaths -- that deadly toxins were not biochemical weapons but natural contaminants of feces -- "is not very attractive anymore." But you wouldn't know it from an article he and four colleagues have published in Scientific American this month.
In that piece, Meselson & Co. repeat at length their view that yellow rain is "a phenomenon of nature, not of man." They do not, however, report what Prof. Meselson acknowledged in a telephone interview last week: that samples of bee feces he and a colleague brought back from a celebrated expedition to a Thailand jungle last year show no traces of the mycotoxins that are widely believed to have killed thousands of people in war-torn areas on the frontier of the Soviet empire.
Profs. Meselson and Thomas Seeley of Yale got to test their hypothesis in Thailand with the help of a $256,000 "genius" award to Mr. Meselson from the MacArthur Foundation (though the areas they visited were not ones ever associated with a chemical attack). The two academics returned in March 1984 to say they had been "crapped on" by Asian honeybees. "We were caught in one of these yellow rain showers," they said. "It lasted about five minutes and deposited approximately 200 spots per square meter." The scientists collected samples of the bee droppings, along with foodstuffs from Thailand, "for chemical analysis to test the possibility that mycotoxins reported in environmental samples and the blood of refugees occur naturally in Southeast Asia." They concluded their joint statement, saying: "A detailed scientific report of our findings will be published."

It had been Mr. Meselson's hypothesis, first laid out at a meeting of scientists in Detroit in 1983, that the deadly tricothecene mycotoxins discovered by other scientists in the bodies of Southeast Asians were a naturally occurring phemonenon of the region. Bee excrement and foodstuffs, this theory held, hosted the growth of the organisms. The U.S. government has maintained, on the other hand, that yellow rain is a Soviet-supplied toxin used in Laos, Cambodia and Afghanistan in violation of the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention.
Their article in Scientific American, however, includes no mention of the results of those chemical tests.
"They were all negative," Mr. Meselson responded in the interview. He said that he had sent 13 twin samples of food and feces from Thailand to two laboratories in Canada and Britain. (Mr. Meselson is not expert at conducting such tests himself.) The chemists didn't find any of the trichothecene mycotoxins previously identified in yellow rain.
There wasn't room to include these negative results in the article, Mr. Meselson explained. He said that the editors at Scientific American had set strict length limitations and "lots" of data had to be left out.
Mr. Meselson said that he now generally accepts the work of Canadian toxicologist Bruno Schiefer showing that trichothecene mycotoxins don't occur naturally in Southeast Asia -- at least not to any significant extent that might cause a health problem. That means the Harvard scientist, whose theories have become the watchword of Western doubters and Soviet propagandists who challenge the U.S. government's position, must now square his own stance. If yellow rain poisons aren't springing up on their own, and if refugees indeed are suffering and dying from them, who's the perpetrator? For scientists who've cautioned against accusing the Soviets over the matter, it's a dilemma -- and one that the critical omission in Scientific American would allow them to skirt.
Mr. Meselson's out, in the interview, was to suggest that perhaps there were no toxins to begin with. This takes the whole debate back two years, reopening issues that were seen as settled at the time Mr. Meselson first suggested that the toxins were natural products. A 1983 essay by Lewis Thomas in Discover magazine, for example, calls for more exploration of the natural-occurrence thesis in the following words:
"There is no question in anyone's mind about the existence of mycotoxins produced by the Fusarium fungus in the samples taken from the leaves and rocks in places where yellow rain attacks are said to have occurred. Nor is there any doubt about the reports by Chester Mirocha, an acknowledged specialist in mycotoxins at the University of Minnesota, that high levels of trichothecene toxins (and their metabolic derivatives) were present in the blood and tissues of patients from the same areas. What remains in question is whether this fungus species has always existed in nature in Southeast Asia, and whether its toxin might be present in the kinds of plant foods consumed by people during seasons of near starvation."
The only thing left to dispute, in short, was the hypothesis Mr. Meselson has now abandoned after negative results with his own samples, and in the face of the work by Mr. Schiefer. The Canadian's latest findings show that the unnatural combination of three different mycotoxins found in the yellow rain samples collected by the U.S. government and ABC News is a "superb" killer -- much more potent than the toxins individually or in other combinations, a cocktail put together by someone who knew what he was doing.
Mr. Meselson, it would seem, can support reopening the old inquiry only by directly challenging the findings of Minnesota's Prof. Mirocha and Joseph Rosen of Rutgers. Does he think their laboratory work in error? "I'm not saying that," he replied.
Prof. Meselson did find it telling that a U.S. Army laboratory at Aberdeen, Md., failed to find the toxins in yellow rain samples that previously tested positive by Mr. Mirocha. While Mr. Meselson uses the Aberdeen negative test results as a foil, he fails to mention that that same Army laboratory did find the toxins on two Soviet gas masks retrieved from Afghanistan in 1982.
Profs. Mirocha and Rosen, meanwhile, stand by their work. In subsequent tests on toxin-infected corn, for instance, they have never turned up any "false positives," which would have indicated that their techniques were faulty. Besides, they both noted, the U.S. Army's laboratory had great difficulty setting up its own testing procedure and delayed a year and more the analyses of many yellow rain samples; during that time, the toxins could have been consumed by bacteria in the samples or otherwise deteriorated. Even Mr. Meselson admitted that that's possible.
So what are we left with? Mr. Meselson has found bee feces, and the U.S. government has found dead bodies. Indeed, detailed medical data about a yellow rain casualty appeared in the April 1985 issue of the peer-review Journal of Forensic Science. The authors are Charles J. Stahl, the former chief pathologist for the U.S. military and now a professor at East Tennessee State University; James B. Farnum, another East Tennessee pathologist; and Christopher C. Green, formerly the Central Intelligence Agency's yellow rain expert, who holds an M.D. degree. These medical experts concluded that the yellow rain victim died from a chemical warfare agent and not from any natural infection.
As they explain for the first time, an encampment of Khmer Rouge guerrillas at Tuol Chrey in Cambodia, near the Thai border, was hit by an artillery bombardment from Vietnamese forces on Feb. 13, 1982. Three shells exploded upwind of the camp, and the soldiers smelled a sweet, perfumelike odor and experienced the rapid onset of incapacitation. There were at least 100 casualties. They suffered from tearing of the eyes, blurred vision, bitter taste, nasal obstruction, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, muscle tremors, and, in some cases, collapse or paralysis.
One of the victims, taken to a hospital, soon showed signs of recovery and was released. It was known that he had been a victim of an earlier yellow rain attack the previous September. On March 11, 1982, he was again admitted to a field hospital after his condition worsened. Five days later, he died after vomiting and urinating blood -- typical signs of trichothecene poisoning. An autopsy was performed, and tissue samples were sent to the U.S.
Both Profs. Mirocha and Rosen found traces of the mycotoxins in the samples. Pathologic examinations of the tissues showed severe damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys, stomach and liver. The victim died from "acute pulmonary edema." All of these symptoms are associated with trichothecene poisoning. The "pattern of injury," said the pathologists, "suggests the direct effects of toxic agents, as well as the possibility of hypersensitivity reaction related to the previous chemical exposure on 19 Sept. 1981."
Meanwhile, the Soviet Union has had a field day with the bee-feces conjecture. The Russians have used this theory in their disinformation campaign to cover up their chemical-warfare crimes in Southeast Asia and Afghanistan. Most recently, Joseph Adamov, a Radio Moscow "commentator" who speaks English with a Brooklyn-like accent, told an American television audience on CBS's "Face the Nation": "There is a fantastic anti-Soviet campaign on in the United States today, including the socalled spy dust, which is completely absurd, just like that yellow rain was, that turned out to be the excrement of bees."
Nicholas Wade of the New York Times shares the same sentiments. In a recent editorial-page article, he wrote: "Yellow rain is bee excrement, a fact so preposterous and so embarrassing that even now the Administration cannot bring itself to accept it." He called the U.S. government's evidence "a speck of dubious data."
What remain, of course, are the corpses and refugee reports.
Rep. Jim Leach (R., Iowa) was at the scientific meeting in 1983 when Messrs. Meselson and Seeley first announced their bee-feces hypothesis. Mr. Leach's response was direct: "We have the bodies, we have the witnesses. When you listen to a father describing his son dying in his arms from a yellow and white rain falling from the skies, you are not one to disbelieve."

Aviation Biofuels: The Year of the Tree
Aviation Biofuels: The Year of the Tree
by Jim Lane
When the world’s leaders for sustainable aviation fuels have a general meeting the week before the COP24 global climate sessions (this year in Poland), you can bet that the focus will be breaking the “You Can Have Two out of Three Conundrum” of aviation fuels. Which is to say: affordable, available at scale, and sustainable, pick any two of the three.
Fossil fuels are (usually) affordable and always available at scale. Sustainable jet fuels that are available at scale have generally not been affordable to date, and affordable sustainable fuels have been mostly explored at bench scale, so far.
San Francisco’s buying more renewable fuel
Case in point, the exciting and welcome news that Shell, World Energy, SkyNRG, KLM, SAS and Finnair have joined forces to reduce carbon emissions at San Francisco Airport.
Turns out that Shell Aviation and SkyNRG have commenced the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to international airlines KLM, SAS and Finnair at San Francisco Airport (SFO). The fuel is produced by World Energy, currently the only at0scale SAF refinery worldwide, at the Paramount refinery in Los Angeles, and is made from used cooking oil, resulting in a fuel that has significantly lower lifecycle carbon emissions than conventional jet fuel. In general, sustainable aviation fuel has a reduction potential of 60-80%, compared to conventional jet fuel.
And, isn’t this the same refinery that provided diesel and jet fuel blends for which the Navy paid $2.07 a gallon in late 2015? (And, though that was a 10 percent biofuels blend, the same refinery won a competitive bid in 2017 for a 30 percent biofuels blend).
So what’s not to like? In the context of aviation demand, running at billions of gallons worldwide and every drop of that airlines would like to switch-over to sustainable aviation fuels — there’s the problem of Peak FOG.
No that’s not something you see in San Francisco around November; it refers to a global shortage of waste Fats, Oils and Greases. Turns out the world runs out of affordable, sustainable liquid alternatives to fossil fuels faster than it runs out of fossils.
Airlines’ Year of the Tree [CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://ift.tt/2E6q6du], from Wikimedia Commons Year of the Tree
Which is why the talk of CAAFI was, in a nutshell, all about wood — not virgin timber, mind you, or even the choice parts of the timber supply chain that become 2x4s or round logs. No, there’s no Frame-House vs Fuel in here. It’s the needles, tops, branches that are the waste products of our usual applications for wood. Plus, thinnings as we take dead trees out of forests to limit fire risk.
A breakthrough in woody biomass from federal lands?
Among the more juicy items heard on the floor at CAAFI, one that regards the unfortunately-named 40 CFR 80.1401, Renewable Fuels Standard and Regulation of Fuels and Fuel Additives.
The 2,000 page FY2018 Omnibus Spending Bill signed by President Trump on March 23, 2018, in Title IV General Provisions, on page 866, states; “That the Federal policy relating to forest bioenergy- must be consistent across all Federal departments and agencies, shall recognize the full benefits of the use of forest biomass for responsible forest management and recognizes biomass as a renewable energy source. The only limitations is that, the use of forest biomass for energy production does not cause conversion of forests to non forest use”.
CJ Evans (Managing Director, American Diversified Energy Consulting Services) added, “Some background on this language. I first tried to advance legislation in 2007 (through Rep. Adam Putnam’s office) to make the definitions of biomass consistent across all federal laws. There were almost a dozen different definitions.  I hit a buzz saw of opposition from interest groups and abandoned the effort. Mark Riedy also got involved at one point and several groups wrote white papers in 2014 and 2015, without making any progress.
“I was working on other issues during the last 5 months of 2017 (restoration of funding for Title 17 and EERE at DOE and removal of a provision in ag appropriations that would have eliminated USDA staff working on renewable energy programs) but had contact with the offices that could fix the problem with not being able to use diseased trees from national forests and have the wood quality as renewable biomass. So I wrote a short bullet list with some suggested language and gave it to a couple of these offices … and it was included in the Omnibus Spending Bill. Certainly one of easiest legislative victories I’ve ever undertaken.”
The capacity build out
The numbers are getting impressive amongst those who can produce heavy fuels — diesel and jet fuels, specifically.
Consider these. Neste (NEF.F, NESTE.HE, NTOIF, NTOIY), 910 million gallons of existing capacity and a capacity-adding project underway. World Energy, 60 million gallons of existing capacity, with a project underway to expand to 300 million gallons. Diamond Green Diesel (a joint venture between Valero (VLO) and Darling Ingredients (DAR)) with 170 million gallons in place and expanding capacity towards a goal of 300 million gallons. REG (REGI), 70 million gallons in place in Louisiana, and a project underway in partnership with Phillips 66 to build new capacity in Washington state.
And that’s not taking into account companies such as Red Rock Biofuels (first commercial under construction), Fulcrum Bioenergy (first commercial under construction), SG Preston (first commercial under development), Ryze Renewables (first commercial under development), and EnerSysNet (pilot under development), among many more. Not to mention the companies pursuing alcohol-to-jet, including LanzaTech, Gevo and Vertimass.
The feedstocks
Think residues. That’s where the sustainability has, so far, met the economics. There have been three basic thrusts, to date. First, the afore-mentioned foray into waste FOG. There is municipal solid waste, which Fulcrum is using. There is waste wood, which Red Rock has been using. And, there has been waste land — targeting lands that have fallen out of traditional agricultural production because of crop disease or changing economics with traditional crops — Agrisoma and the SPARC consortium in Florida are targeting land that in years gone by would have been home to citrus or cattle in South Florida.
CORSIA fuels, baby
Perhaps the most welcome news of the floor is at last a single word that we can use to replace all the monikers and acronyms for sustainable aviation furls. SPK, SAF, CARB fuel, RJ just to name three of many.
Now we know we can simply call them CORSIA fuels. For the CORSIA Global Carbon Offsetting Scheme that the airlines have established. Which is not a carbon tax or emissions trading, and it applies only to international flights (which represent about 67 percent of commercial airlines fuel use).
Now even the CORSIA group has come up with a three-letter acronym of their own, CEF, CORSIA-eligible fuel. We’ll ignore that. CORSIA is fine.
The leading expert we know is Nancy Young of Airlines 4 America and here are your 10 takeaways:
single global market-based standard
time frame 2021-35
CORSIA is in lieu of other measures imposed
2021-26 voluntary phase in for countries, 2027 mandatory other then exempt countries or routes eg LDCs
76 countries representing 76% of international in the opt-in phases, in 2027 goes up about 90 percent
demonstration of compliance every 3 years begins Jan 1 2019
monitoring is country by country reporting to ICAO
alt fuel not included in 2019-20, rather in 2021 when offsetting begins
emissions savings from purchase of CORSIA eligible fuels reduces individual operators obligations
when we fly country to country, this is the single mechanism
On concerns that airlines will simply buy offsets and ignore fuels. Young predicts: “Watch what happens to the market over 15-20 years as countries move to meet Paris and CORSIA obligations, it will be a tight offset market.”
Mabus: stop buying a way out of a problem and starting buying into a solution
Former Navy Secretary Ray Mabus took the stage and said:
“When I was the nominee for Secretary of the Navy and waiting for my confirmation, what kept jumping out at me in the briefings I received was fuel, how it could be used as a weapon against us. We set a policy goal that no later than 2020 half of fuel would come from non-fossil. When i did that frankly the technology and the economics weren’t there, but we believed that we could save the navy and taxpayers money by doing i, and i saw energy as a national security argument and alternative fuels as a key part of that energy security.
“I got a little push back on that particularly from Congress where one legislator said “you’re the secretary of the navy not energy. I said that the navy has always led in energy transformation, sail to coal, coal to oil, oil to nuclear, and every time we did that there were all these naysayers. They would say, things like ‘why are you giving up all these coaling stations for this unproven oil technology,’ and every time single they were wrong and they are completely wrong about alternative energy.
“We moved aggressively. We tested and certified every type of ship and aircraft. We flew on 100% biofuels. And Fulcrum and Red Rock are here today and doing well, and we made an investment in them. But we got the benefit. 77 mgs in 2015 90/10 blend and in 2017 a 60 million gallons purchase on a 70/30 blend. In each case, 25 cents cheaper to the navy.
“Now, in 2017 I wasn’t there any more pushing for this. Now, it’s the new normal. Now, the navy and so many others — including airlines like United, KLM, Lufthansa and Alaska are moving aggressively, and ports and airports like San Francisco, Singapore, Oslo, Brisbane and Seattle. Alternative energy in all its forms did one major thing for the Navy, it made the navy better at what they do, better warfighters. This is not a group of ardent environmentalist, they run in big ships and have a lot of vehicles. They have become leaders because of the proof that it makes them better at doing the job that the United States needs them to do. Ultimately it was national security, not the 60-90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that was important.
“But, the US government put out a national climate assessment the day after Thanksgiving. Every time the assessment comes out , the warnings become more severe, the consequences more dire. The lower states have warmed 1.5 degrees this century, 1.2 degrees in last few decades and will get 3-12 degrees warmer by end of the century. The effects of this are catastrophic. Already we see the effects on places and people, we have the the first internally displaced people from climate change in some of our coastal islands.
“Big companies are now seeing the benefits of direct action. But we have got to get beyond buying carbon offsets. We have to stop buying our way out of a problem and starting buying into a solution. Two immediate ideas. Corporate jet fuels costs usually 3-4X larger than big commercial airlines, Switching to alternatives would send a strong signal that corporations are paying attention. And, favor airlines as business travel partners by screening for alternative fuels. Using that power with business travel to make sure we are moving in the right direction.
“We all have to change how we operate, just as we did at the Navy. In the military if you keep doing the same things you become predictable, and predictable is defeatable. If you don’t change and make the moves you have to make, and think differently about how you procure fuel, your corporation will go away.”
“The RFS debate has been not productive and about locking in first-generation biofuels and failing the industry.”
In his opening remarks, Steve Csonka, executive director of CAAFI said “Aviation is at a crossroads – a vision for expansion but a carbon intensity that the public is turning sharply against. if done right, biofuels can be part of the solution, but not done right it is the opposite.  LanzaTech is clearing industrial emissions, Agrisoma is planting cover crops.. Fulcrum is reducing landfill waste. The RFS debate has been not productive and about locking in first-generation biofuels and failing the industry.”
“The problem is the low cost of offsets”
SG Preston CEO Randy LeTang veered away from feedstocks as the primary challenge. “The problem is not feedstock, but support from the end consumer, when you have high cost fuel vs low cost credits. How can we drive down the cost to provide fuels without he support of airlines offtakers? We see lack of interest and waning interest from offtakers given the optionality of low cost offsets vs high cost fuels.”
#1 opportunity: “clean up this biointermediates rule”
For US policy, CAAFI brought in Advanced Biofuels Association president Mike McAdams, who noted that the 2019 RVO was as expected, and of more interest was the Brady tax bill which offers a 7 years tax credit starting at $1.19 and sunsets after 7 years. He noted that the i#1 opportunity was to “clean up this biointermediates rule”,  that it is essential in scaling advanced biofuels that bio-intermediates be allowable and with a mass balance rather than carbon-14 analysis system. He noted that “consumers are increasingly aware of aviation carbon impact and want to participate in real change; now is the time to drive policies to enable alternative jet fuel commercialization. But he warned that efforts could be undercut by carryover RINs. He commented that 2.8B carryover RINS issued in 2018; up from 2017’s 2.25 billion, and in the D6 RIN pool that had taken the RIN value from 80 cents to 6 cents.
“LCFS is the right tool to address the toughest GHG sector, heavy transport”
For California policy, CAAFI brought in Graham Noyes, who noted that the overall California Low Carbon Fuel Standard drives down the carbon intensity of California fuels by 1.25 percent per year through 2030, with obligated parties having the option to buy credits or blend low carbon fuels. Jet fuels are coming into the standard, though on an opt-in basis at first.
The value of California credits. Noyes noted that a technology with a carbon intensity of 40 could earn $1.19 per gallon and those with a carbon intensity of 10 could earn $1.83 in the trading values today.  He said that the LCFS is the right tool to address the toughest GHG sector, heavy transportation, because it materially overvalues alternatives compared to cap and trade of emissions and offsets.
He noted that Low Carbon Standards were very much in an expansion mode. Washington state in 2019 could be next, there was a coalition of interests in the Midwest looking at a regional LCFS, and a RGGI group for the Northwestern states. Noyes said that the essentials for
2019 were continued vocal leadership from A4A and CAAFI, and sustained support from the agencies.
“We all see a significant shift, that customers are demanding low carbon solutions and by and large the majors don’t make them.”
World Energy COO Bryan Sherbacow commented, “I was pleasantly surprised after 2008 with the Obama Administration coming in to find that the military were the new hippies in embracing sustainability. It seemed clear and obvious this was going to be the successful path forward and that Secretary Mabus was setting out the demand signal. Our timing worked well and we were awarded the first commercial fuel and now on our 3rd Navy contract and its one of our more important pieces of business for us. But the US government eliminated the USDA component and hopefully we can restore that, because we probably won’t be competitive in the fourth solicitation.
Meanwhile, people being displaced and fires are breaking out and it is important what we do. We all see a significant shift, that customers are demanding low carbon solutions and by and large the majors don’t make them.
“At World Energy we are partnering with incumbents in the oil & gas space and we become part of their distribution where they are compelled by policy, We don’t have to replicate the infrastructure – just work through them. Our California asset was back in 2013 a small asphalt refinery and we formed a JV to convert to renewables with initial deliveries in 2016 and first deliveries to UAL and delivering into LAX since then. We started at 3,000 barrels per day and are expanding to 20000 barrels a day. With our process we produce 50 percent jet, but about 10 percent very competitively on a cost basis. So, we’re making 3-4 million gallons, and in the future we would ideally make around 30-40 million gallons.
The problems are that the incentives significantly favor diesel over jet, and that we have to get past fats oils and greases and get to novel feedstocks. The incentives can be fixed, right now if a customer shows up in the California market we can win those contracts every time, unless we have just done a poor job of educating the customer. Now, in January, jet fuel will be included in that LCFS program and that will make a big change.
On technology, the tricky part of that most processes that involve gasification of woody biomass, which is available and affordable, give you a lot of naphtha and not enough diesel, so the economics don’t work nearly as well as they could, because naphtha generally fits into the lower-value gasoline pool.
Get beyond private wood
Red Rock Biofuels CEO Terry Kulesa noted, “the gasoline pool is growing and there’s a need for 30 percent more diesel going forward. We use the same process, different suppliers compared to Fulcrum BioEnergy, we gasify biomass, use FT to get to a biocrude, then hydroprocessing to produce a finished fuel. We’re making 15.1 million gallons per year of heavy transport fuels. The tricky part? In terms of technology, it’s really the gasification. The tricky part of the economics is that we have to buy private wood, we can’t qualify for federal renewable fuel credits when we use wood sourced from federal lands.” Even though we all could use getting some of that waste wood off of federal land.
“Completion? We’ll be completed in December and we expect 6-12 months of ramp up. Plants never run exactly as designed, that’s why we have great operators.”
“We need alternatives to landfilling fossil plastics that cannot be recycled or reused”
Neste’s US head, Neville Fernandes spoke about the growth at the world leader by production volume. “At Neste, we’re at 260000 barrels per day [in petroleum capacity] or 910 million gallons per year in Poorvoo, Rotterdam and Singapore, we have $1.4 billion in operating profit. In a few weeks we’ll make the decision on adding 340 mgy in Singapore which will take out total footprint up to 1.3 billion gallons.
Our pathway involved moving to renewable diesel in 2007, renewable jet in 2015, Ultra low Sulphur marine in 2018 and renewable propane and chemicals are the new initiatives. In the future, we see ourselves building a GreenHub to convert waste plastics to fuels. Last year, 80 percent of our feedstock came from waste and residues. In the short term it is about waste FOG; in the longer term we see microbial oil, algae and plastic liquefaction as important feedstocks. And we need alternatives to landfilling fossil plastics that cannot be recycled or reused.
“100% biofuels now ready for ASTM balloting”
Chuck Red at ARA took the stage to focus on 100% biofuels flights and supplies. “We’re now ready for the ASTM ballot. And we expect to have out first commercial unit at 3600 barrel per day in the Western US, with ARA participating as an equity partner and using a USDA 9003 loan guarantee.
“It’s jet, and ground operations, too”
FedEx’s (FDX) Joel Murdoch noted that the demand is not only for jet fuel but for diesel for ground operations, for many.
“FedEx’s goal is 30 percent alternative fuel use for aviation by 2030.  In petroleum we contract for 1-2 years but we contract for 5-10 years with alternatives, with exit mechanisms, and we have a 5% maximum per location until the security of supply established.”
The challenges? More than just fuel price and composition, Murdoch advises. “There are logistics as well as cost. Truck, rail, pipelines — how will it be transported? There’s the airport fuel consortiums to consider, will the blends be on or off the airport. There’s the use of existing tankage, the addition of new tanks. And more.”
Replacing aromatics
Representing the US Department of Energy was BETO director Jonathan Male, who noted that the 26 billion gallon jet fuel is expected to double in size and would require nearly a billion tons of biomass. He noted that most blends are restricted to date to 50 percent because of the performance of aromatics. “But, are there renewable molecules and help us with particulate matter and give us what aromatics do?” He suggested that R&D should and would examine replacing the aromatics with iso-alkanes and cycloalkanes.
Pursuing economics through process optimization and co-products
Overall, Male’s message was “Bring Down Cost’ and he noted that when it comes to feedstocks, and processing, yield was the goal and “every gram counts”.  To reach the economics needed, he said, you have to have unit operations s that work together in an optimal way — you don’t have a process until you join units together,” and by inference, you don’t have a sustainable, affordable, defensible process until the units work together in an optimal way.
NIFA’s National Program Leader in the Division of Sustainable Bioenergy Bill Goldner chimed in decisively on this point, The co-products are really important to the economics.”
