"CrystalClan honors Ridgetalon and Racoonsnout for their many moons of service!"
Yowls of support echoed around the cavern. The two mates had been with the clan since the beginning, and had been indispensable warriors.
Thornstar looked down, full of pride. He fought valiantly to keep his jelousy off his face, not wanting anything to spoil the moment for these two who meant so much to everyone and to him. Ridgetalon had been his apprentice. He'd helped the anxious and conflicted cat move past the trauma he'd sustained under his own father, the brutal leader of FloodClan.
But for these cats, that much younger than him, to be retiring... when he'd tried so hard to make Sharpstar choose another so he wouldn't be religated to this fate....
He knew he should be proud, and he was. Of Ridgetalon, Racoonsnout, and all his clan. But he'd never wanted to be leader, he'd tried not to. But each cat younger than him that got to retire made the whole situation feel so much worse.
-----
Thornstar left for a walk through the tunnels surrounding the CrystalClan camp. The retirement of Ridgetalon and Racoonsnout had triggered some uncomfortable math in his mind. Shineclaw, his deputy, was not all that younger than him, and she'd recently been terribly injured. She was as fiesty a cat as ever, but the posibility of her retirement wighed on his mind. And with that, the question of who he would choose as his next deputy...
When he first became leader, he'd chosen Rosypelt out of some kind of desperation, he just needed a cat he could trust and rely on without question. And her wide range of experience had made her a talented deputy... Shineclaw... she was... different. He'd hoped she might show her talents enough to succeed him. But, despite her popularity, Thornstar was a bit relieved she probably would not be taking the leadership position...
Still the left the next question to consider... who should be deputy upon Shineclaw's retirement?
Vineshell had been a nobel warrior, and was often ready to step in and help train apprentices, whenever needed, guiding new mentors in the best practices, or filling in for cats who where injured or ill. She was a fantastic teacher for sure. But she could be stubborn, and uncompromising. Her almost zealous devotion to StarClan could blind her to nuance, something Thornstar worried wouldn't serve her well in a position of official power.
Cricketspeck was well liked, confident, yet responsible. She'd proven herself able to work beyond her negative emotions, with the care that she'd shown her half-sister. She was capable of bringing lonesome cats out of their shell. Indeed, she was more than capable or rallying everyone together. She might certainly be the right choice....
He thought of his own kits. Trying, as he always did, not to think for too long about Spikeheart, Chasingcloud. Or Spotstripe. Forestpool was an extremely intelligent cat. Thornstar gave an amused huff, he took more after Rosypelt in that sense for sure. But he could be tactless, and was seen as aloof by a lot of his clanmates. Fringepelt was far too irresponsible, though Thornstar had to admit he found the thought of Fringepelt cracking jokes and lightening the mood between leaders rather appealing. Berrylight had already become a mediator, and frankly, been through enough. In fact. Thornstar wasn't really inclined to put any of his children through the stress and troubles of being a leader or deputy. However Lightpelt... She'd been rather ambitious growing up. And oftened seemed to try to fit herself into some form of leadership for her contemporaries. It certainly hadn't always worked... But she'd come a long way and become very mature, and more even tempered. She might certainly be the right cat to succeed him, though it could be hard to be objective about one's own kits...
He sighed. When the time came he'd make his decision. Shineclaw, even with her injuries showed no sign of slowing down, despite Spottedmint's insistence that she ought to.
----
"Shineclaw, we honor you for your moons of service to the clan!" The gathered clan cats called out their support and praise, Shineclaw had been popular, especially with the younger cats. Thornstar looked at his now former deputy. Knowing she could plainly see the jealousy coursing through him. He flicked his tail, softening his gaze. "And I thank you, you've been a noble deputy, and you've earned your rest."
"Thank you Thornstar." she nuzzeled his shoulder, hoping she could communicate the weight of her understanding in that gesture.
Despite the ceremony's conclusion, the gathered cats remained, many of them looking expectantly at Thornstar.
"Who's gonna be the new deputy?" Emberpaw asked outloud, "I think it should be Fishfalcon!" Chasingegg, her mother, tapped her on the head with her tail, "Thats not for you to decide! Hush!" Fishfalcon's fur was standing on end, but she also didn't look opposed to the idea.
Thornstar chuckled. "I will announce the next deputy soon." He turned and headed back into his den.
----
Shineclaw paded away to join Spottedmint for a celabretory rabbit... Still, worry felt heavy in her paws. As she settled next to Spottedmint, he ran his tail comfortingly over her flank. "What's wrong? Already having second thoughts?"
She shook her head, "Not exactly... I just thought, Thornstar would have chosen someone already! I mean... I'd told him a moon ago that I'd retire after Midnightheart was made a warrior..."
Spottedmint flicked an ear, "Yes... But you know how Thornstar can be... He does tend to leave things to the last second..." Shineclaw hummed an agreement as she chewed some rabbit. "And," Spottedmint continued, "This is a big decision. The cat he picks is pretty likely to end up the leader. Especially if he actually tries to retire."
"You think he actually would? I know he wants too," she huffed, "He's wanted to for ages! But... its hard to imagine him actually doing it..."
Spottedmint flicked his tail, "I was worried you'd never retire!"
----
An uncomfortable amount of time passed before Thornstar would call all cats for a Clan meeting again. He'd gone on a walk with Rosypelt, and headed straight for his den after. Goosetooth grumbled about bad omens. The tension in the camp was so thick you could slice it with a claw.
When Thornstar emerged to call a meeting, most cats were already milling around. He sat before speaking, tail folded neatly over his paws.
"The next deputy of CrystalClan will be Lightpelt." He looked to his daughter, "Lightpelt, you've been a great mentor to Cloudfeather, and now Bristlepoppy. And I ask you now to continue to extend your patience and understanding to all of CrystalClan. I know you'll be an excellent deputy." And leader after me... He didn't say the words, but the idea was clear in the minds of many. Including Lightpelt who puffed up with pride, coming forward in a slightly ungraceful leap.
"Thank you! Thornstar! And everyone! I'll do my absolute best!"
---
Ridgetalon sulked away. Not wanting to offend his leader, and the cat who'd been his mentor. But he was unable to fully hide his displeasure. Lightpelt was a fine enough cat, talented and brave. But there where many who were far more experienced and obviously better suited to the position. Cricketspeck was surely the one on most cat's minds. Vineshell as well, had been a mentor to many. And if he were inclined to pick a younger cat, Carpleg was well liked by many, responsible and talented. He lashed his tail. It was no good getting worked up. But he was unable to keep a deeply unpleasant memory from bubbling up.
"Leaders are born, Ridgepaw. My father was leader of FloodClan before me, and you will be the only cat worthy to lead after me."
His claws were stuck into the dirt. He could still, after all these years feel his father's claws, and the sting of his never ending disappointment, when it was clear he was not cut out for leadership. Or the type of leadership that Spirestar demanded.
