Thomas Reid-Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man. Reid’s common sense or direct realism is Locke’s empiricism minus the theory of ideas, that in addition to the object we experience there is an idea we perceive which is what is primarily known. Locke divided perception into primary and secondary qualities, those which belonged to the actual object like shape and those which belong only to perception like color. This division led to Berkeley’s idealism and Hume’s skepticism, for they argued how could an idea or sense datum give us knowledge of any more than other ideas/sense data if that’s all we could know? For Reid, what we experience are the objects of experience existing independent of us which have the qualities we perceive in them in some way. Consciousness is consciousness of something (intentionality): the operations of the mind are themselves perceived because they exist too. It’s not perception that gives them existence. Direct realism is the primacy of existence over the primacy of consciousness, to use Rand’s terminology. Existence exists and consciousness perceives existence; the structure of reality which gives us a priori notions which are irrefutable from experience. I think it completes the empiricist theory which after Locke turned into anti-realism: idealism positivism and pragmatism.
