Blaise Harrison s’est rendu à Gex afin de présenter son nouveau long-métrage �� Les Particules » en avant-première. À savoir que ce drame français est sorti le 5 juin 2019 et met en avant les acteurs Thomas Daloz, Salvatore Ferro et Néa Lüders, parmi tant d’autres.

Sustainability: A Personal History 2

 Kate Daloz recalls in her story the importance of neighbours. We were fortunate to have long-time farmers next door who were instrumental in helping us get established, as only my father had farming experience. As Ms. Daloz relates, the reciprocity of neighbours helping neighbours was vitally important to everyone’s wellbeing. In our case, our neighbor would hay our property using his equipment and we would repay by helping him harvest his hay, giving him half our hay and letting his cows graze on our fields adjacent to his. Other neighbours would share their vegetables – it was not unusual to find zucchini in the mailbox or tomatoes on the porch steps – and commiserate if a raccoon raid decimated all the corn patches on the road.

My newly-married siblings brought their spouses to help get the house liveable, the garden planted and the livestock housed. Not that we ever had much livestock; some cows, two horses, chickens and bees. Next door was the Thomas Merton Centre for meditation and contemplation, which is where we bought (before our garden was ready) fresh vegetables, goat’s milk and homemade incense. There was a small orchard on our property and what we couldn’t eat, we juiced. We gathered the autumn leaves for the root cellar boxes in which we stored apples and carrots. We learned about the social order – literally the pecking order – of chickens, and appreciated their help in the garden eating pests. We recycled almost everything and joined the village co-operative which would meet in various homes to divide the shopping order, purchased in bulk somewhere in Sherbrooke. A brother-in-law was an avid hunter and fisherman; for two years, we ate venison, perch, rabbit, even raccoon and woodchuck – but no commercially prepared meat. Almost everything on our table was made or grown by us. We even got a grinder for the wheat berries to make our own flour but the bread was so hard it really had to be toasted before it could be eaten. Our beautiful Ayrshire cow, Abundance, was purchased from our Hatley cousins. She was indeed abundant and we could scarcely keep up with her milk supply. We learned to make butter and ice cream with success, but the cheese was inedible. Having St. Benoît-du-Lac just across the lake (with their delicious Gruyère cheese) perhaps weakened our incentive to improve our cheese-making skills.
