As an avid reader of both crime and romance genres, it's both concerning and hilarious to me how many parallels could be drawn between the two

For e.g. A is giving B flowers as a simple romantic gesture; sweet and cute and nothing wrong with it, right? But if the book is advertised as a thriller then you will have the readers spending hours and hours discussing and theorising whether it was a genuine action or some way to deceive the readers. Those innocent flowers will be overanalyzed and dissected because we can't afford to trust anything or anyone in this genre

On the other hand, A could be stalking B and showcasing borderline psychotic obsessive behaviour but because the book is advertised as romance, you will have readers go "Ohmygod A is so protective of B, so romantic-"

And I would be shouting "No, dumbass! That is exactly the kind of crime thriller books are written about!"
