The Fall - This Nation’s Saving Grace (1985). R.I.P. Mark E. Smith. We lost one of the most important cult icon of music today. Can’t begin to describe what this man stood for and what impact he had on music artists that came after him. A man with a singular vision and talent that never died out during his long career. So prolific that he released 32 studio albums in his 30 long years as The Fall. Not single one of those albums received any significant commercial success but he made music for not anybody but for himself and to those who understood that weird world of Mark E. Smith. You didn’t have to be weird to enjoy and understand his music, all you needed to do was just be ‘totally wired’. Not even first month of 2018 has passed and we already lost two very important icons. #LiveAtTheWitchTrials #TheFall ... a dangerous LP for me to play. This is their first LP and it's the beginning of a long journey that now, unfortunately has an end. Whenever I'd play this album, it would start me off playing all the others I had. I started doing this around the time that #ImperialWaxSolvent was released. Now it's an automatic trigger to the muscle memory to listen to it all again, always finding new songs that I hadn't really listened to and to track the influences of other band members, internal problems and toe-dipping into different styles and genres of other music to be transformed into a 'Fall' track or album. This happened again today when I had a hankering to listen to 'Frightened'. somewhat an MES treatise. The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace (PVC / Beggars Banquet cat. PVC 8490) If I have forty LPs on my iPhone that would be a lot. This is one of them. I listen to this weekly as I ride my bike to work. There is some music that still gives me that tingle of violence with a beat. Again, this is one of them. Mark E. Smith was an incredible front man, songwriter and drinker. His body language was extremely confrontational when he performed. The music on this LP brought everything that was great about the Fall, throughout their many line-up changes, together for one powerful expression of art. We tried to see The Fall as often as time allowed. They had a very close relationship with a friend in Hoboken so they regularly played Maxwell’s. They would book several shows in the area when they stayed with him. I know we saw them at Irving Plaza, The Ritz, and even City Gardens, amongst other places. On this particular tour they booked The Lone Star. Let’s just say this was a perfect canvas for violence and art to make something special. In the end, it hangs on my wall of top ten of best shows of all time. The Fall at The Lone Star Cafe, what were they thinking? The bouncers were so confused by the music and the crowd that at one point they just started throwing people around. It was so incredibly fitting to the locale and soundtrack. Mark moved to the back of the stage, curled up in the fetal position and kept singing. He occasionally looked back over his shoulder and then turned back to the wall. To me, this LP and that performance were what live music was all about. Thank you Mark E.
