One of my favorite things to do during the day is study the processes of the art world. Whether it be sales, cataloguing, law, exhibits or museum services, I try to get insight on how to beat present work and run a successful arts business. “At The Museum” by @themuseumofmodernart is one of my favorites because it just focuses on what goes on behind the institutions doors as it prepares for some of its most iconic exhibitions and also its recent renovations. Stopped into @spruethmagers to see “The Paradisical Pictures” by #GilbertAndGeorge. At first glance, the work appears full of color and chaos. Building up patterns that sometimes appear floral then other times abstract. Dig deeper and you’ll find two bored old guys with a photographer. Or am I a boring young person who doesn’t “understand”? I thought this #VictorBurgin quote was apropos of our current art world. Starting off the year with this understanding of the #artmarket and it’s participants requires this disclaimer. It’s all #conceptual. So when we all appreciate the marketing of a voyage by @damienhirst or produce by @mauriziocattelan, we must understand that we are all actors playing a predetermined role. You’ve got a one shot to win.. you can use things from your past that you’ve known and experienced, things from your present that you’re learning and currently living through or you can choose the possibility of not knowing and having nothing with no information about what’s to come. It could be greater or lesser, happy/sad, wins and losses and it’s extremely unfamiliar. Which one are you taking? I’ll always take the last option because the possibilities always seem much more enticing than the current realities.
