Ruben Dias x Reader - Summer Fling Part 8/10
Part 9 is out on my Patreon for free!
Summary - Reader has landed a research job at a marine biology lab in Portugal. She is, therefore, staying with her sister and her sister's Portuguese boyfriend for the summer holidays. There she meets Ruben Dias who is on vacation with his friends after the 2024 Euros. However, the two meet under the circumstances in which Ruben believes that Reader is a prostitute.
Enjoy ☀️
It was early in the morning. The beaches in Quarteira lay abandoned, yet infested with tourists and their families. Ruben agreed to meet you there, on the beach. Where his presence wouldn't distract you as much since the sweet scent of him would get lost with the ocean breeze.
"Are you sure about this?" Your sister asked.
"Yes."
"Alright then. Do you need me to come with you or…?"
"No. I'll only be a minute."
"Okay, I'll be right here if you need me."
The plan was simple. Take the money and leave. Nothing complicated about that. Still, your heart deceived you by beating like a drum. You took a deep breath and made your way down the beach. You could see Ruben's figure in the distance, growing taller and taller as you approached him. So did the small figure standing beside him. Simba, held tightly in a leash.
"Hey, Ruben. Thanks for meeting me here." You came forth in a matter of business.
"Y/N? What's going on?" Ruben asked, his voice filled with concern. He was dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, his hair still tousled from bed.
"Please," You raised hand. "Don't make this more awkward than it already is. You know why I'm here. You owe me payment for my services."
Ruben's shoulders withered, his gaze lost for a minute. "Right." He muttered. "I just thought you said that you didn't…."
"I don't." Your breath hitched, hiding the tremble of your vocal cords. "But you thought I did, meaning you owe me."
"Y/N I…"
"Don't Ruben."
He stiffened, stopping himself from reaching out to you.
"Let's just settle the deal and forget that anything ever happened between us."
He nodded, reaching for something in his pocket. "Here, I think that's everything you asked for."
You were quick to snatch the bundle of money from his hand, hiding the trembling of your own. This would have been it, the end of the exchange, the end of you and Ruben had he not been careless with Simba's leash, allowing the dog to jump up your leg, happily wagging its tail wanting to be petted.
"There." You cooed, reaching down to pet the dog. "Such a beautiful boy, aren't you? Such a beautiful, beautiful boy." Unwanted tears ran down your cheeks.
"Y/N?" Ruben's voice was gentle, patient even. "I want you to tell me if you're in any kind of trouble."
"Please, Ruben…" You laughed, a wet laugh.
"Y/N...if there's anything I can do to help then tell me."
"No!" You stood, challenging his height. Ruben's expression softened at the sight of you. The sight of your bloodshot eyes. "Y/N, I'm sorry if what I said the other night —"
You groaned in frustration. "Will you just forget about that, about me? You obviously came to Portugal for a good time and I'm not judging you for that. I on the other hand came here to work, not for some stupid summer fling, okay? Let's just end things here, alright. Let's just forget that the two of us ever met."
The sound of crashing waves surrounded you and somewhere in the distance the first tourists made their way to call dibs on the tanning beds closest to the sea.
Ruben shook his head. "No."
"No?" You frowned.
"No. I don't want to forget about you and you don't want to forget about me."
"Excuse me. What makes you think that you can—" What ever you were going to say went over your head, or better yet, into your mouth. Ruben closed the gap between you, completely invading your space. Even if you wanted to pull back, you couldn't. Ruben's hands on each side of your face brought you forward, drawing you in until all that was left was the taste of his lips. He kissed you mercilessly, with no intent to let you catch your breath. He kissed you to the sound of squeaking seagulls and an overjoyed pup, running circles around your legs.
"Ruben please." Your lips were numb against his. "You have to let me go."
He smiled. "Not until you tell me why you need the money."
"Ruben." You wiggled out of his grip, almost tripping over the leash around your feet.
Ruben caught you with his hands on your waist, his forehead knocking against yours. "Let me help you Y/N. Why won't you let me hel—"
"I'm leaving, that's why."
Ruben pulled back, his eyes batting obliviously.
"My sister and I are going back to Australia."
"When?"
"Once my sister pays her debt to the guy she owes money to."
"Y/N," Ruben rubbed his aching temple. "Doesn't this sound like a matter for the police?"
"The Police?" You laughed. "My sister is a sex worker, not to mention a citizen of another country. Why would the Portuguese police ever favor her when clearly this sort of business has been going on at that Beach Club for years? You even said so yourself."
Ruben didn't have a comeback. Involving the police was simply a bad idea. "I just don't want you to get hurt." He mumbled, with a look that made it hard for you to turn your back on him. However, you had to.
"I can take care of myself. Goodbye Ruben."
It was with a heavy heart that you made your way back up the beach, your footsteps dragging in the sand. Maki stood waiting by her car, her hair blowing in the wind.
"How did it go, did you get the money?"
"Yeah, I got it."
"Really?" She chuckled. "Men, how stupid they are." The two of you hopped back into the car. "Where to next, the beach club?"
"Yes and then straight to the airport. We're buying a one way ticket back to Sydney."
"I dunno Y/N, with all this money that your boyfriend just gave us we could just—"
"He's not my boyfriend."
"I bet he wants to be."
"No, Maki." You shifted in your seat, revealing your glossy eyes. "Ruben was never my boyfriend. He never even liked me as a person and I blame you for making me believe that he did."
"Come on Y/N, that's not—"
"We're done Maki, you hear me? Once we get back to Australia, you and I are done, got it?"
Neither of you thought It would come to this. As sisters you had accepted your differences, like fire and ice. However, despite belonging together the two elements ultimately canceled each other out.
*************************************
"I'll go tell Diogo. Wait for me here."
You made it to Albufeira. Where Maki would hand Ruben's money over to Diogo, who could pay off her debt to The Captain. It was the consequences of her own actions, meaning you felt no sympathy for your sister who was also leaving someone she cared about behind.
"Y/N?"
You stood waiting by the docks, refusing to go near the beach club, when suddenly you felt a tap on your shoulder.
"Gavin?"
He was surprised to see you, shifting his head to see if you were by yourself. "What are you doing here?" He asked with a half hearted smile.
"I'm waiting for my sister, we're running errands." You lied. "What are you doing here?"
He looked nothing like the lab rat you had gotten to know. The students at the marine station, including yourself, were used to Gavin strutting around in board shorts and flip flops. Now he appeared before you dressed in gray khakis and a white linen shirt with the top buttons undone. He looked elegant and stylish, a side of him unfamiliar to you.
"Is…is everything alright?" You asked, seeing Gavin a bit low in the way he regarded you..
"With me?" He chuckled. "I'm the one who fucked up considering you didn't come into the lab this morning."
"I…" You admit that it was a bad way to announce your resignation. However after everything that was going on in your life, including Gavin's kiss. You didn't really give second thoughts on how your studies might be affected by your swift departure from the country.
"Y/N, trust me," Gvin said, stepping up to you. "If I can take back what I did—"
"It's okay." You nodded. "I was vulnerable and needed a shoulder to cry on. I can see how that might have given you the wrong impression."
"I feel like I've taken advantage of you."
"You haven't. Trust me. My sister's boyfriend on the other hand ...."
"Diogo?"
"Yes, that's his name. He…wait. How did you—"
"Capitão."
A large shadow was casted behind you. You turned around and found yourself face to face with Diogo, frowning at the sight of…"You?" He grunted. "What are you doing here?"
"I…I'm...where is Maki?"
His nostrils flared with your question, a clear tension between you. "She's safe." He said. "You should go to her."
"I was just about to—" You turned around, wanting to say goodbye to Gavin. A proper goodbye, since it might be the last time you saw him. You gasped however, as Gavin with narrowed eyes held up a gun, pointing it straight to your face. "Do as I say and this doesn't have to get ugly."
"Ugly? Gavin what the hell are you—"
"Do as I say Y/N!"
"Capitão," Diogo stepped forward, shielding you by putting his body between you and the gun. "As meninas não têm nada a ver com o razzia ao seu iate. Podia ter sido qualquer um." (The girls had nothing to do with the razzia of your yacht. It could have been anyone.)
"Como você?" (Like you?)
You screamed.
The gun shot rang in your ear as if lighting had struck. Gavin had fired his gun at Diogo, who went down like a tree before your feet.
"Now…" A shiver traveled down your spine, the tip of the gun poking you in the back. "Get on the boat." Gavin said, shuffling you ahead of him, towards a large fleet, one you recognized.
"You?" You stammered. "You're him, you're The Captain?"
You imagined Gavin's smirk behind your back, a smirk like the one he had displayed in his car, moments before his attempt to kiss you.
"I like the way you said that." He snarled. "How about you step onto my boat and I'll show you exactly what type of Captain I am."

Disembodied Part 3/8
Warning: Mention of death // Angst // Fluff
Pairings: Adrian Raines X MC // Nik Ryder X MC
Words: 1.348
Part 1 is here and part 2 over here!
As always, tags in the reblog!
"Adrian." Amy called him, a tiny smile creeping the corners of her lips. He observed her for an instant, almost as if he could see beyond Alex's face. "It's so good to see you." A week had passed and every fiber of her body was missing him.
"Excuse me but I don't believe we have met before."
"I know this is going to sound crazy. Insane actually. But I swear it's true." He was looking at her with a cold analytical stare. It was intense and piercing. It reminded her of her first interview with him so many months ago. "I'm Amy." He stood stoic as ever. "Amy Miller. As in Amy Miller your, well, I was going to say assistant but I think that's not totally adequate."
"I think you mistook me for someone else," Adrian said, politely, turning on his heels, and heading to Raines Corp.'s front door.
"I had a free minute. Is this the candidate?" Adrian stood, turning to observe her once more. "To Nicole's annoyance, you interviewed me. You told me a story about a genie and a man. You hired me on the spot."
"That's not conclusive."
"You saved Lily for me. That night we kissed for the first time in the rooftop restaurant."
"You'll have to excuse my skepticism–"
"You told me about Charles and Eleanor." Amy took a hesitant step towards him. "You talked about them in your cabin when Vega set you up. We were with Kamilah. But we spent the night together alone and you said you would always be there for me."
"How did you–"
"You have a silver locket with Charles' drawing. It's the most important thing to you. You risked coming here with me to take it out of the safe before the fight with Gaius when you destroyed your labs. And after I stabbed Gaius and he attacked me back, you ran to me and held me." As the memories filled her heart with both pain and warmth, the emotion cut off her words. She blinked, trying to contain her tears, touching her chest unconsciously. "I died in your arms."
"Amy?" Adrian looked into her eyes, almost like he was expecting to recognize her soul. "How can it be you?" She took a step forward and before she expected it, Adrian had dropped his briefcase and was hugging her. For the first time in the last week and even trapped inside this strange body, she felt like herself. His warmth and his hand on her head, putting that perfect amount of pressure so typical of him, calming her nerves. Amy closed her eyes; letting the feeling spread. "I knew there was something off. It was your appearance but it wasn't you."
"You really noticed it?"
"Of course I did." She hugged him back, taking a deep breath. They stood like that for a while, ignoring the curious looks of the people walking past and the destroyed city around them. Finally, he gently pulled back from her, attentively observing her 'new' face. "What happened, Amy?"
"I don't know, I… I remember the fight against Gaius and then I woke up under the sun in New Orleans looking, well… Like this." His hands cupped her face, eyebrows furrowing with sorrow and concern. "Do you really believe me?"
"I do."
"Even with all the craziness?"
"Even with it." Amy focused on his eyes, that calm stare that always comforted her. "After all, we are getting good with craziness, don't you think?" She softly chuckled before becoming serious again.
"I have been so worried and scared, I woke up alone and none of you were around and I thought that Gaius–"
"We are all fine, Amy. I promise."
"I just… I missed you." She whispered.
"I missed you too." Adrian took a deep breath, leaning his forehead down with his eyes closed. “There are so many things I need to say to you. So much to ask you. I–”
"Sorry to cut off short such a cute encounter…" Nik's sarcastic voice said as he walked to them. Instinctively, at the sight of his bow, Adrian stood in front of her. Amy smiled to herself, remembering the first time he had protected her like this in Priya's fashion show. "...But I need to see if Alex is okay, Amy."
"I know, I know." She sighed and Adrian turned to her.
"What is going on, Amy? Who is he?" He asked her, suspiciously.
"Nik Ryder, Adrian Raines." Both men eyed each other. "You said it was my appearance? So, my body is here?" Amy asked Adrian.
"Seems like it." Nik took a step to the door but Adrian extended his arm, stopping him. "I still don't know who you are." Nik watched him clearly mad. "Until Amy explains everything, a nighthunter will not come into my building."
"Then you do know who I am," Nik smirked, smuggling.
"No. I just know your type." He replied, coldly, his stare stopping in all and each of the weapons that Nik was carrying with him.
"Now listen, bloodsucker…" Adrian narrowed his eyes at that term and stood his whole high, looking more intimidating than ever. "...I don't have time for this. I will come in with or without your 'permission'."
"Nik, cut it out." Amy said angrily, rolling her eyes. "Adrian, Nik is Alex's friend. The girl this body belongs to. We think that if I'm in her body–"
"--She is in yours." Adrian finished her sentence and Amy nodded. "Seems plausible."
"Okay then." Nik headed to the front door again but Adrian stopped him once more. "What game are you playing, Raines?!"
"I trust what Amy says without doubt but, before this, she doesn't know who you are." He was calm but firm, his body was taut, ready to take any course of action that was necessary. "Alex has to corroborate who you are. I'm not risking Amy's soul or body in the hands of a nighthunter." Amy smiled at him, gently squeezing his arm.
"I could say the same about you." Nik's voice was more similar to a snarl than actual words, however, Adrian kept his composure.
"I concur. That's why Amy is going to talk with Alex alone. Do you agree?" Nik simply nodded so Adrian turned back to her. “In that case.” He gave her the elevator key. “She’s in the guest penthouse. We will be waiting here."
"Okay."
"If you need me, call for me. I will hear you." He gently touched her cheek, searching her eyes like he was still trying to see beyond her features. "Take your time." He planted a small kiss on her forehead.
“Amy.” She whirled to Nik. “Tell Alex I'm waiting for her too.”
"I will." Amy took a deep breath and headed to the crystal doors, feeling her stomach twisting around anxiously. As she walked inside the building everything felt familiar but at the same time so different. Maybe it was because this strange face was reflected in all the glass instead of hers. The metallic doors were replaced by the wood ones that belong to the penthouse. Amy stood there, thinking about what she was about to find on the other side. To see herself like that, out of her body, was a scary thought without a doubt. And there was no way to know how Alex would react. If it was Alex at all. The seconds passed until she gathered the courage to lift her hand and ring the doorbell. She heard steps getting closer and closer as her heart sped up uncontrollably.
“Who is it?”
“Um, sorry to bother you but Adrian sent me here.” Even though it wasn't entirely the truth, it would be easier than saying who she truly was. It was a chat to have face-to-face, not with a door between them.
“That’s weird, he didn’t mention anything about someone coming–” Amy held a gasp when her own image swung open the door and the other woman looked at her dumbstruck, clearly not expecting the vision she had in front of her. “What the…?”

As Astarion crests the top of the steps, his senses become wholly focused on her. His eyes scan the deck as he takes calculated steps, his body knowing where to find her. A thread tugging him down the right path.
When he draws nearer to her hiding place, he swallows hard at the sight of Tara snuggled in her arms. Gods, the gentleness of this woman – he’d been too careless. Too cold, all because of a warped sense of pride muddled by his insecurity. His fear of inferiority, he laments to admit.
Out of cruel habit, Astarion turns to scan the surface of the water beyond the main deck, warily searching for wine and soot colored sails. Even if they were just barely visible over the horizon, it’d be too close.
The open air suddenly feels stuffy. He eyes the passing crew members, so many faces he doesn’t recognize. So many who could betray him as easily as the last had, with the right encouragement from his enemies.
Enemies – no. He’d picked up adversaries and rivals over his time hopping from sea to port and back to the sea, but Astarion had only had one true enemy.
Captain Cazador Szarr.
He shudders at the memory of Captain Szarr’s cruelty the last time Astarion had been aboard the Rhapsody.
He cannot get captured again.
Doe’s gentle cooing to the navigator’s tressym pulls him from the memories; eases the racing of his heart, reminds him that the expanse around them is free of enemy sails. His eyes dart to where she sits, and his jaw tightens at her tear-stained cheeks. He did this to her. Gods, why had he done this to her?
Astarion approaches, sure-footed at first but slowing. Would Doe even speak to him? He’d mulled over his apology on his way up, but now none of the words felt right.
He couldn’t lose her.
He didn’t know why, but he couldn’t.
And yet, he already had. “Doe,” he says softly, stopping a respectable distance away. If she wanted him to go, he would go; his cruelty had been unjustified, and he’d deserve whatever she had to throw at him. He’d weather the consequences and hope that whatever he’d felt between them when Doe had first planted a kiss to his lips would still be there, still standing among the wreckage. “I must first and foremost apologize formally to you for my behavior in the navigator’s quarters. I was unfair to you, especially considering you saved me from a rather gruesome fate.” He pauses, the guilt wracking through him as Doe refuses to glance his way. “If I may be quite frank with you – I owe you my life. I’m sorry.”
—A
She sniffles, feeling bad for him but also keeping cool distance between them. She hugs the tressym closer and she purrs, curling around her shoulders with her head under her chin.
'You should be sorry,' she says quietly, staring at a cleat with its figure 8 knot, made by her own hand. 'You were reckless and stupid and mean, when all I've been is sweet to you.' She glances up at him then, her eyes filling with fresh tears. Her face is already blotchy and sore, her nose and eyes red. 'How dare you insinuate that I want special treatment? That I want to share your bed, more to the point. I'm not a whore.' She sniffs hard. 'And I would never want to be put above anyone else. I don't deserve it.'
She can't harden her heart to this man, no matter how much she wants to. Her heart aches for his guilt and sadness. And yet she must have a boundary.
'I'll spend the night in the brig if you deem it prudent, captain,' she says. There is a formality and a distance to her words. 'If my insolence is too much to bear. But I might have loved you, if you'd let me.'
She rises to her feet. 'If you would excuse me, I need to return this beautiful girl to your navigator. I'll return to my duties once our meeting is concluded.'
With that, she gathers the tressym to her and walks off to the navigator's quarters, trying not to weep and failing, tears coursing into the tressym's feathers.

For OCs asks... Isn't it your OC on your icon? Can you tell us more about them?
Ah Lucen Venator ! My beloved hunter <3 (I called my tarnished Lucen too, I might used that name for everyone lol but it's not exactly the same character either hehe ^^)
(drawing made by PaperAcolyte/Chess Albaneze on Instagram by the way. A really nice and sweet person who's making one of the best bloodborne comic to date!)
Alright so lil Lucen really try to be a kind soul but have seen some serious shit in his life (cf scars + last survivor origins initially but I arranged myself so that a lot of origin could actually fit him). What I mean is that he's more a summon helper than an invader XD I put a bit of myself in him. He's probably gonna ascend to become a great one but in the scenario where he would do the "Yharnam sunrise ending" he would ended becoming the next Crow.
He got black hair and silver? eyes. And actually more than just one scar on the face. Oh and I guess they/them is fine too? And If I had a female hunter I would probably have called her Lucen as well so
He's like the only characters with a complex family tree including both OC and really obscure characters from the lore of Bloodborne too. (I finally have an excuse to talk about it let's go !) (of course it's just my imagination and doesn't repose on anything)
Ok so first you have his grandad (that I call Mr Venator or just Venator because I didn't found a name yet) he's a a foreigner who came to Yharnam as a prospector originally and then became an old hunter. (He probably never met his grandson too... probably died way before 😢)
He had a son (Lucen's dad) that accompanied him but he was a child/young teenager when they came at Yharnam. But he hang up around the workshop & with other hunter and that's how he met the brother of his future wife and well, his future wife.
Now Lucen's mother (that's where the family tree get tricky XD) so she's from Yharnam? I think. she's from a servant family of Cain or smt akin too. She was a kid too during the beginning of the hunters and all (like before the hamlet/just after).
BUT she had an older brother/half brother (Lucen's uncle) who's an illegitimate Cainhurst/noble child. Maria took him under her wings and he became an old hunter (probably the youngest too, he was a teen). That GUY stayed a hunter and kinda rejected cainhurst who wanted him to become a knight and he's even the one who took care of the workshop after Gehrman went into the dream. And oh yeah he ended up becoming the beast possessed soul of the workshop...💀 (the freaking drama I know! I need names for everyone too ahhhh)
AND (it's not finished) that hunter is also... vileblood drifter Leo half brother too! (I know I said it was complex) (Leo, who's probably a cousin/relative of Bloody Crow too. Crow's dad is another one of my oc too but that will be for another time lol).
Here's the family tree so you might understand better. With the simplified version and a more complex version (i'm sorry it's a mess... I might changed it one day...or not)
Anyway in my hc / one of my story all this lil squad : Lucen's parents (with his mom being like 8 months pregnant of him at the time...) his uncle and lil (emo teen young adult) Crow have been basically saved/hid by Gehrman when the church attacked Cainhurst. (I have lots of thoughts about it ! Lucen's uncle and Leo even reconcile in it wow)
Just imagining the following scene make me laugh all the time XD :
Laurence at the workshop : Gehrman what are you doing ??
Gehrman : Me ? Nothing I'm just having tea with some friends. Didn't you tell me you were busy with the mess at Cainhust or smt...
Imagined around the table you have like the doll, 2 anxious/scared future parents (with the dad being hurt because he was almost crucified at Hemwick), Crow (Voron) who's on the point of annihilated Laurence and the hunter (Lucen uncle) holding him back...
After that Lucen's family quit Yharnam. (Except his uncle who stayed/came back. And Crow who might have went with them? but ended up coming back a bit later too. I would never have thought crow would have been linked that much with my hunter... wtf)
Oh and i forgot to mention... when the Moon Presence was beckon... a child was born under the pale moonlight...far away from Yharnam... I let you guess who that was 👀
(I don't have that much bloodborne oc really... ok maybe besides them, the cainhurst ocs (the knight, crow? and a few others (I need names too) and if you don't count the king, Caryll, Dores, dores, gatekeeper, Archi & Paarl + some the corpses we see in game we know like 2 things about I guess the only other legit oc is like Gehrman's dog lmao XD)
Update : By the way it's pronounced LuSSen /LuÇen
#my asks#lucen venator#paleblood hunter#good hunter#original characters#bloodborne headcanons#so even if he's not blood related he's indirectly related to Leo. to crow to the royal guard oc and Maria I guess lmao XD#originally I wanted to put Leo in crow family but that didn't quit fit with the other family I had in mind so...#don't ask me how I made that up I have no idea#i am so sorry the family tree is a mess#all the stuff including crow are quite recent it's because of my mutual fault !!! <3 I hated the guy and now I'm like oh what if#he met my oc when he was a baby lol XD

Enemies to Lovers part Seven out of however many it takes for my coworker to Love Vil
Summary: You go to an awards show with Vil.
A/N: the next one will be out in a couple days, and I'm excited to see what people think 😊
Chapters: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 8. 9. 10. Epilogue.
You had dressed up in the red outfit, promised Grim you would grab him snacks if there were any at the rewards event, and gone off to Vil's room for final makeup and hair touches.
He already looked fabulous in his suit, and his shimmering red makeup look went well with your outfit.
He did your makeup and hair, and pulled out his magic pen.
"I'm putting a glamour on you. The people who know you will recognize you, but everyone else won't. That way you can avoid paparazzi, even after being my plus one for a night," he said, as glitter rained down on her from his pen. You looked in the mirror. You couldn't see a difference, but then again, you recognized yourself, so it probably wouldn't work on you.
"There," he placed his hands on your shoulders, and looked at you through the mirror. "You look beautiful. The people are going to love you."
He looked like he wanted to say something more, but instead he patted your shoulders one more time, then held out his hand to help you up.
"Shall we?" He asked.
….
The first part of the event was constant photos and posing as you worked your way down the red carpet and into the venue. Luckily for you, Vil was able to answer any questions the paparazzi had, including a backstory for who you were and why you were there.
Eventually, you made it into the venue, where it was quieter except for various actors and nominees mingling.
Suddenly, a woman with silver hair, and a purple gown, was hugging Vil tightly.
"Claudia," he choked.
"Vil baby," she said as she pulled back, still holding onto his arms, giving him a flirty pout that made your stomach churn.
"You promised you'd consider that role I got for you." She said, drawing shapes on his arm with her pointer finger.
"I told you, Claudia, I'm not acting again until I get my degree," Vil made eye contact with you over Claudia's shoulder, but you had no idea how to save him.
"I know, but it's not fair that you always get to act with Neige, and you never act with me, it's starting to feel personal," she whined.
"Speak of the devil," Vil muttered, as Neige himself spotted them across the room.
"Vii! Claudia! Hi!" He said happily, hugging them both. "Claudia, congratulations on your nomination!"
You had finally come up with an excuse to save a now tense looking Vil.
"Uh, Vil, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I need to sit down, my feet are killing me."
"Of course!" He said rather loudly. "If you would both excuse me, I need to see to my plus one's needs." He said, pretending to press a kiss to the back of your hand. Even though it was fake, you still felt your face warm from it.
As you walked away, Vil whispered into your ear, "Thank you apple blossom, I owe you one."
"I'll hold you to it," you whispered back with a smug smile.
….
The rest of the event had gone off without a hitch. And now you were back at Vil's house, finishing your packing.
Vil had told you that you could keep the outfit, and anything else he had given you and Grim over the summer, so you were leaving with more than what you arrived with.
The night before you were to take a mirror back to NRC, you were walking around the house, making sure you had everything, when you saw Vil sitting on one of the balconies.
You stepped outside, and asked, "Mind if I join you?"
He nodded at you, and you took a seat in the chair next to him. After a couple moments of painful silence, you couldn't take it anymore.
"Are you excited for your internship?"
"Mhmm." He said, clearly not going to continue the thought. "Are you excited to be back at NRC?"
"Yeah." You said.
Another moment of painful silence. You were just about ready to spill your confused thoughts and feelings to him, when he turned to you, and said, "If you need more help with potions feel free to reach out to me. But I have total faith in your abilities. After all, I am an excellent tutor."
He gave you a playful grin, and you rolled your eyes in response.
"You're not that great a teacher. I would have figured it out eventually," you muttered.
"I'm sure you would have," he laughed. He stood up and stretched. Even his stretching was graceful. The moon lit his features as he turned to you with a melancholy expression.
"I'm leaving early in the morning, so in case I don't see you before you leave," he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, holding there for a second before pulling away, his lavender and vanilla scent remaining a second longer. "Thank you for taking care of me this summer. Make sure to take care of yourself this year, my apple blossom."
He left before you could gather your thoughts enough to respond.
….
That morning, Vil was in fact gone before you and Grim left. He had left you a snack bag by the mirror portal that had opened for you to go back to NRC.
Grim happily took the snack bag and rushed through the mirror, as you took one last look at Vil's house, before stepping through the portal yourself, saying a silent goodbye to summer, the house, and Vil.

Pairing: Austin Butler x singer/actress fem reader
Warning: age gap, fluff, cursing, angst … that’s all
Word count: ~7030
Plot: after a perfect day with Austin that arises many questions not only within the public, but within yourself, you feel torn. Torn between two people, as your heart seems to be more malleable than expected
Disclaimer: everything I write is fake and should be read as such. <except for the songs I reference>
"(Y/n)..." I groan in my sleep cuddling my face further into the pillow. "Wake up, we fell asleep." A hand smooths down my back, shaking me awake. As my brain finally catches up to what's happening, my eyes fly open and I jerk up. We fell asleep, we, me and Austin. Austin and me. Alone. "Easy." He's voice is soft, calm. The room is dark, meaning we've been sleeping for a few hours now, since it was daylight when we got here. I can see the sparkle of his blue eyes in the moonlight coming through the huge windows, barley being able to make out his features in the dim light. "I'm sorry" Austin smiles shaking his head, causing my body to relax a bit, but I'm still on high alert.
Looking around for my phone , I get it out of my purse, that was laying on the ground. Quickly opening the home app and turning on the lights, causing the both of us to squint our eyes in an attempt to get used to the bright room. Austin looks heavenly, with his eyes still a bit sleepy and hair disheveled. "I'm sorry." I say again, looking at my lap and fiddling with my fingers, picking at the skin there, a bad habit of mine.
He takes my hands in his, stopping my assault on my poor fingers and forcing me to look at him. "Hey, it's ok, as long as you feel better, all's good" I nod sighing at the memory of what brought us here. "I should've just taken the stupid picture with him." I say, thinking I could've easily done that and spared myself a lot of trouble. "No, you shouldn't have, people need to understand boundaries, you were nice and offered to sign something instead, he was the dick. Excuse my language." I giggle at the fact that he just excused himself for cursing. "It's ok. Yeah I guess you're right, but still." Shrugging my shoulders, I move my eyes from his face to my lap, where our hands are intertwined.
"No, stop that, it wasn't your fault and he should've been more respectful. What a perv, that's not the way you talk to a girl, to anyone for that matter." Austin is visibly still annoyed by the dude's behavior and that somehow gets my heart to pick up, beating faster in my chest. I don't know why, but seeing him care like this, just make me feel a certain type of way. Cared for? Protected? Maybe, I guess. Ugh I try to keep my mind straight and find parallels between him and Timmy, forcing myself to draw a line between friends and something more, because I know it's all in my head. I know he couldn't possibly find me attractive and even if he did, there's still so many reasons why this is wrong.
"He wasn't lying tho. About the pictures. They were for the movie. Um ... in the book, Amelia is challenged by this group of girls to take pictures of herself in lingerie and post them online. I agreed to them back then, but I'm starting to regret it now. People are sick in the head." He listens to me talk as his warm callused fingers draw circles over my hands. "Doesn't matter the context of the photos. Dude was way out of line." Austin assures me. I know that, I do. When I first took the pictures, that was the first time I saw myself a sensual person, the pictures looked good, nothing too exposing and I was beautiful in them. It's awful that the dirty mind of others had to tint that for me. The photos never bothered me, it was other people seeing them, that got me stressing out.
I look over at the clock on the wall, seeing it's 8:40 pm, late, but not too late. "Um do you want dinner or something? Or if you want to go I can call my driver to come take you back to your hotel." Was asking him to stay for dinner again, too much? Am I being inappropriate? Ugh I wish this was easier, but it's not. I don't even want to think about all the gossip that's probably going around. I'm sure if I opened my instagram right now, I'd be bombarded with pictures and comments. "Sure, if it's ok with you, I can stay for dinner." Austin answers, leaving me completely clueless about what this thing between us is supposed to be and when too much is too much.
"Ok, we can order something, what do you want?" I ask as I take my hands out of his and fight the urge to wince at the cold air hitting my skin once out of his flaming hot hands. "I'm fine with whatever, maybe we can do pizza? Or if you don't feel like ordering what would you say to some grilled cheese sandwiches?" He suggests.
"Damn I think I'd kill for one right now, Timmy makes the best" Austin giggles at me, brushing his hair back with his hands. As I move around on the couch, I notice his jacket still hanging over me like a blanket. "Well then I'll take that as a challenge. Can I?" He asks pointing in the direction of the kitchen and I nod biting my lip to stop the cheeky smile making it's way onto my face. I swear I'm acting so strange around him, almost like all the filters I usually put up in order to seem a bit more tame are just crumbling with him. And don't take this like I'm usually faking how I act or shit, but usually when I meet new people I'm more reserved and anxious, shy even, but there has almost been none of that with him. It's like we've known each other for a life time now, old friends.
Austin gets up from the couch and I do the same, taking my phone and following him into the kitchen, where he starts looking through the fridge, taking out everything he needs. I go over to the cabinet where I keep the cat food and fill their bowls, the two little angles coming to feast. "Good boys" I praise them petting their soft fur, feeling the vibrations of their purring.
Sitting down at the kitchen island, I watch as Austin moves gracefully around the place, preparing the food. He looks so in his element, it's clear that his passionate about cooking. Opening my phone I can't fight the urge to go on instagram, immediately seeing the thousands of posts about me and Austin. Pictures of me and him walking, laughing and eating. We look so good together. 'Oh my god, stop that' I scold myself, rolling my eyes at how delusional I can be. I also make the mistake to look at the comments. 90% of them are calling him a cheater and me shameless, for going after another girls boyfriend. That's actually the first time in a long while that I think of Kaia. My hands start sweating profusely and I swallow trying to make the sudden tightness in my throat go away.
"Everything ok?" Austin asks taking me out of my thoughts. I clear my throat and lick my lips, avoiding the way his eyes linger over them. "Austin does Kaia know that you're here?" I don't know how her knowing would change much, I guess in the end it would ease my mind a bit. And all that matters is that us three know the truth, that nothing is going on, the rest, can and will be ignored. He looks at me with a puzzled look, like he doesn't see my question relevant. "Yeah she does, I guess, I don't know, we don't tell each other everything."
What am I supposed to gather from that? Like what am I to make of him saying things like that? Pointing to his relationship being fake or at most not serious. It's not new or unheard of, PR stunts like this, but still. "Why?" He follows, curious to see why I'd bring that up now. "Because we were photographed together, alone, for a second time. I know it's nothing, but I don't want Kaia to get the wrong impression." He's cutting up some cheese to put in the sandwich as I speak.
"We're just friends, she knows and we don't keep tabs on each other." I nod, just friends, but the way his tone sounds - defensive, almost worries me and I can't stop the words before they come out of my mouth. "Are you two PR?" He whips his head up, looking at me and I avert my eyes. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to assume, but it's just the way you talk about the whole thing-" he sighs, stopping me mid rambling. I look at him. "We are, but I want you to know I was against it. I believe relationships are sacred and this is just..." he pauses a second. "Just not that."
Ok I don't know what to say, what am I supposed to say? I can't say I'm sorry. He works on the food as silence fills the kitchen, tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. I look at my phone, trying to occupy myself with something and I see the texts from Timmy, he must of seen the pictures as well.
Timmy💝:
Hey, today went great, I'm pretty tired so I'll probably be out cold for the rest of the day, call me tomorrow when you wake.
I smile happy to hear that his work was going great and relieved that he hasn't seen the photos yet. "Please say something!" I look up at Austin, who's eyes watch me back pleading. My mouth opens and closes, not sure what to say. Looking down he turns around to face the stove and puts the sandwiches in the pan, to cook. "I don't think less of you Austin, it's not even my business to know the insides of your relationship. I talked before thinking." He turns back at me, prompting himself on his hands, that are balled into tight fists against the black marble of the counter. "I'm not used to being the talk of everything. I knew when I got the role, it'll be like this, I almost wished I didn't get it, because of how afraid I was of all this. Then my team goes completely nuts and they have me do all these things, to arouse interest. I ruined my 10 year old relationship because of this." He stops to flip the sandwiches, quickly turning to face me.
"She, Vanessa, she tried to tell me, that it'll all get too much, that I should be cautious, but I got angry with her and we started bickering and then I was in Australia filming and we decided maybe a break would help. The next thing I know it's been months since talking and then they come to me with this." I get up and move over to him, hugging him, as he rests his head on top of mine. Austin relaxes, moving his arms to hug me back.
We hug for a while, but he takes one of his arms away at one point to turn off the stove, so the food doesn't burn. From where I'm sitting with my cheek against the soft fabric of his denim shirt, I can hear his strong heart beating and I can feel each breath he takes. "I understand how overwhelming it all can be, I'm lucky to be working with a team that understands my boundaries, but still I'm young and still at the beginning, so in the future who knows, what prepositions they might make. You are an incredible person, I can tell. I'm sure if you would take the time to apologize to her she'll understand."
"You have no idea how good it feels to have someone know about this, I haven't told anyone, I don't know why I told you, but I trust you. Feels like I've known you a lifetime." Austin's voice is low and it sends shivers down my spine as his words seep into my heart, warming it. My insides feel light and my mind cloudy, the proximity of him, suddenly being too much. The way he smells, like oranges and cloves, the way his muscles flex around me, the way his breath fans over the hair on top of my head, the way his chin rests on my head. Everything, everything is all too much. My brain can barely form coherent thoughts, in order to force me to keep my feet on the ground. I wish I could explain everything to myself, so that maybe I could find a way to deal with all these emotions. There's a magnetic field around Austin, something so enticing and scary at the same time, but the electric current cursing through my body when I'm close to him is addicting. Dangerously addicting. "Would it be weird if I said that I feel the same?" I ask cautious.
Austin's arms tighten around me, in a silent way of saying 'No, it's not'. "I don't think she wants my forgiveness and I don't know what that would do for us, she's with someone else and I no longer think of her like that. I still love her, I do, but not the same way I used to." I pull away an inch so I can look up at him, sparkling blue eyes, staring into mine.
"But wouldn't you feel better knowing that you did right by her?" He seems to think over what I just said. "I guess you're right, I owe her that and myself a bit." We break apart and I go to take out two plates for us to eat on. He places the sandwiches on each pate and we grab them, moving over to the living room. As I sit down on the couch I notice his eyes looking somewhere behind me and following his gaze my eyes land on my guitar. "I've had it since I was 8, I saved up money for it and bought it second hand. A few years ago I had it taken into a shop to be reconditioned, but I specifically asked for my Hannah Montana stickers to stay on, so they put something over them to preserve them."
Austin chuckles lightly at me talking about my old guitar. I put the plate down on the coffee table and get up to pick up the guitar. "Play something, can I hear an original?" He asks. I'm a bit reluctant about sharing any of my songs before the album is completely done, but I guess I could make an exception for him. "Ok, but you haven't heard anything, got it? Otherwise..." I motion slicing my throat and he laughs, at my silliness.
I touch the cords with the pads of my fingers and play an easy progression, trying to buy time to about which song I want to play him. "There was a time, when I was alone, with nowhere to go and no place to call home..." my voice sings as I close my eyes, getting lost in the meaning of the song. "Lost boy" is a sweet song I wrote drawing inspiration form the story of Peter Pan and how when I was young I used to dream of going to Neverland, thinking there I wouldn't feel so alone. "...I am a lost boy, from Neverland, usually hanging out with Peter Pan." I keep going.
The feeling of loneliness is one I've grown to know to be a good friend, always my companion. No matter how many people I surround myself with, there are few times I don't feel alone. So far not much has been able to push that feeling away, not Timmy, not Roxanne, not my cats, not my therapist, who I'm definitely overpaying. "...And lost boys, like me are free" sighing I finish the song and put the guitar next to me on the couch.
"You wrote that?" I nod my head, taking a small bite of the sandwich, enjoying the savory taste of it, it has the perfect amount of cheese. "It's beautiful, but it seems so sad." I can read the pity in Austin's voice, but I push that away, trying not to get caught up. "Yeah, I guess... but just, I don't know." I don't know how to explain myself, because no matter how close I feel to him, he's still just a stranger to me. "You don't need to explain, I get it, kind of." A weak smile makes it's way onto my lips, as he gestures assuring me, there's no need to explain myself.
We sit in silence, eating and when we're done, he takes the plates to the kitchen, to put them in the dishwasher. By now 10pm is rolling around and I know he has to leave soon, but I kind of wish this day would never end. As Austin comes back, I move over to my huge record collection to place my latest acquisitions. "Are you busy tomorrow?" Austin asks, making me whip my head around quickly. "Yeah, I'm sorry, I don't think we'll get to see each other before you leave New York, I have lots to do." He nods sitting down.
"Well I guess I should go, it was nice spending time with you. Let's keep in touch?" Austin proposes. I know I should probably say 'sure, why not' just so I could ghost him and move on, but my tongue moves before my brain gets a chance to fight it. "Yeah, of course. Um come on, I'll walk you out." He smiles brightly at me and we walk over to the door.
I wait for him to put his shoes back on and then his jacket. One of his long fingers pushes the call button for the elevator. As we wait, he looks me over, from head to toe and just before the ding of the elevator is heard, he opens his mouth to say something, but he never does. Instead he comes closer and kisses my cheek. Austin's plush pink lips, warm and wet against my skin. I'm frozen, moving a hand to his chest to prompt myself. "Goodnight (y/n)!" Has my name ever sounded so obscene? No. Has my heart ever skipped the way it just did? No.
Austin gets into the elevator and before the doors close, I mumble I quick 'goodnight', the last thing that I see being his bright smile as he chuckles shaking his head. When the door close and all that's left of him is the smell of his cologne, I touch my cheek, a ghost of his kiss still lingering there.
After forever sat in the entryway, eyes glued to those goddamn doors, like if I looked for long enough or hard enough, they would open to reveal him again. My shoulders slump as I realize how stupid I am being right now, so instead of shaming myself further I go to my room to get ready for sleep.
The getting ready part was easy, falling asleep? Different story. I'm tossing and turning, throwing fists at my innocent covers. Sighing I turn on my bed side lamp, taking my journal and pen. Putting the date down:
Feb 27th 2022
I can't seem to quiet my mind and it feels like my skin is burning for something, if I were to be honest right now I might know what it is I'm longing for. It's him... it just feels too real for it to be just in my head, he must of felt it too. Right? He's just so handsome, but there's more than surface beauty to him, there's a warmth within his soul. I know it, because I've met beautiful men and women before, but neither of them ever left me like this. I can't even find a word to describe myself right now - a mixture of too many feelings, good and bad. Should I just bite my heart and do what I do best? Put it in a song? But how would that sound? A love song for him? About him?
Tapping the pen against my chin, I take a moment to think. It needs to be a song that's not to obvious, something that could be about anyone. I just have to be vague, no mentioning his blue eyes, or honey blonde hair, or those god forsaken plump lips. Think about what I like that could be anyone else's, not just his. I really love the way he says my name, the way he wears himself, the way he looks at me. Putting pen to paper again, I start scribbling.
Maybe it's the way you say my name
Maybe it's the way you move around play your game
But it's so good
I've never felt like this before known anybody like you
Ok this sounds like it could be going somewhere, but I need to be at the piano. Jumping out of bed I rush to get the song playing through the room. Sitting down at my piano, looking over the shiny New York, I play a melody, singing my lyrics over it. "I'm in a field of dandelions, wishing on everyone that you were mine." I sing, getting lost in the music. This is my first ever love song. Love... is this really what I'm doing? Falling in love? I blink at the piano keys, my fingers stuck. Picking the pen up, I go to write down the lyrics, scratching over some of the words and replacing them with others.
Taking a deep breath I keep on playing, singing, then writing down the lyrics. By the time the song feels done, I glance at the clock, it's 3:50 am. Cursing at myself, I close my eyes, rubbing harshly at them. I need to be in the studio at 8am, so if I fall asleep now I might get 3 good hours of sleep, so I carry my heavy feet over to my bedroom, falling on the soft bed. By some miracle I do fall asleep, thankfully a dreamless sleep, so 3 hours later when my alarm wakes me up, as angry as I am at it, I'm actually excited to be in the studio and show Jack the new song.
Taking a quick shower, dressing casually in a pair of black jeans, with a simple cotton long sleeve shirt, in a cream color and a dark green teddy bear jacket on top, cause today feels colder than yesterday. Gathering my things, I feed Simba and William and after a small session of sharing kisses with them, I leave. "Morning, miss!" Matthew, my diver, smiles at me, holding the car door open. "Morning Matt, did you have a good weekend?" I like to make sure that the people who work around me are happy and know they can trust me to understand their needs as well as they understand mine. We make small talk on the way to the studio, but I can't help fidgeting in my seat, so when we get to the studio I almost burst through the door.
"Jack I just wrote a song, you need to hear" he giggles at my enthusiasm as I pull my notebook out, sitting down at the piano without even taking my jacket off. After I play him the song I turn to him expectedly. "Wow, a love song? That's new, anyone in particular?" Jack winks at me, sitting down at the computer, working around to start on the record. "N-no n-no one." He chuckles slightly at my stammering. I choose to ignore it and finally taking off my jacket, I start working with him.
Four hours later, the song is almost done, but I have to run for a photo shoot I need to do with Prada, for some of their new collection. Saying my goodbyes to Jack, I put my glasses on and add a beanie, hoping to not be recognized, but it's useless, a sea of paparazzi already waiting out for me. "(Y/n) are you with Butler?" "Is he cheating on Kaia?" "Don't you think he's too old for you?" "What were you recording?" "Should we expect an album?"
I avoid all questions and get into my car, telling Matt to drive away so we can get there in time, I still need to make it to that 3pm lunch with Joshua, which speaking of I should check if he send me the place where he'd like to meet. Opening my dms I find myself smiling the notification next to his name.
joshuatbassett:
Morning, what do you think of this place: location. It's my favorite in NY!
y/n4real.2002
Never been, but it works for me. See you at 3?
joshuatbassett:
Sure thing, can't wait 💟
y/n4real.2002:
Me neither, c u ❣️
I can't fight the blush in my cheeks and I swing my feel around like a school girl, squirming in my seat. "Good news?" Matt asks looking over at me in the rear view mirror. "Yeah" I say, pushing some hair behind my ear and looking out the window, already running in my head the different scenarios of how this could work. Since his first dm, I've been looking into him a bit and I do have to say I'm extremely smitten by him. Also I can't get his song out of my head and I've been slowly writing a song opposite to his, a different way of loving, or better yet not loving.

that.gossip.blog: y/n4real.2002 leaving the studio early this morning, after a session with jackantonoff. Now that could mean one or two things, she's either working on more original songs or she's working on something for taylorswift again. People who were there report, that she avoided all paparazzi questions and when asked about the relationship with Butler, she had no reaction, so that topic also remains a mystery.

After some very long hours of taking photos in tight clothes, contorting myself in all strange positions, I'm done. The make up team is working on taking off the glam as I shoot Timmy a quick text.
Me:
Can I call you in 20? I forgot this morning sry😬😬
Timmy💝:
Yeah sure, no worries, I know you're busy.
Changing my green jacket for a black blazer, as it's much warmer now, then it was in the morning, I hop in the car and tell Matt to drive to the small restaurant where Joshua said he'd meet me. I take my phone out and call Timmy, his voice coming through the other end only after the first ring. "Hi there Tim!" I smile, happy to be talking to him. "Listen you know I love you and I trust you, I choose to not get into detail about those pictures, I just need to know, are you ok?" He asks and I swallow thickly. "Yeah I am, we are just friends, he asked me to show him around a bit, I took him to Frank's store." Timmy chuckles lightly, making me calm down a bit. "I trust you honey and in a way I think I trust him too. Happy to hear you're ok, you sound it even." I'm surprised by his statement. "I do?"
"Yeah, I can't tell you, but your voice has that jovial tone I haven't herd in a minute." My eyes gloss over with tears and I giggle. "Thanks! I'm on my way to meet Joshua, I'm nervous! How was work? Is it scary?" I shoot question after question, making him laugh. "Slow down, glad to hear you're nervous about your date, calm down it'll be fine. Yes, work has been great, it's definitely darker then I expected, but I think I've got this." I listen to him talk as he gets more into detail about filming. "That's sounds amazing, but I still miss you lots, gotta go now, I'm almost at the restaurant." Timmy shuffles around, causing some static to come through. "Ok, good luck, be safe and be yourself. Love you!"
"Love you too" I end the call and get out of the car, smiling at the fact that Joshua is already here, bouncing one leg up and down, reading a newspaper. "Hello, nice to meet you, hope I'm not late!" I say apologetic, as his eyes shoot up at me, a smile spreading on his face. Joshua gets up, sitting only a few inches taller then me. "N-no you're right on time, please!" He shows me the empty seat in front of him.
I sit down and he hands me a blue cap. Shooting him a quizzing look, he laughs nervously, placing a matching one on his head. "Thought we could try and pull a Steve Rogers, cap to not be recognized?" I put the cap on and laugh at his marvel reference. "Well that's a good idea. I take it you like marvel?" I ask looking over the menu. "Yeah, I do, but I'm not really over Endgame yet." We share a laugh. "Neither am I" I say scrunching my nose up.
A sweet girl comes over to take our order and we seem to be straight on the same page as we order the same thing, without even knowing. "So what's new in the papers? I don't think I've seen one in a minute." He chuckles, brushing back some of his chocolate curls, handing me the newspaper. "Nothing much, the news is pretty boring, too much politics and all, but it gives me so to do without looking at my phone." I read one of the titles, dropping the paper, the latest football scandal not being my cup of tea.
"So do you like New York?" I ask, sipping some coffee the waiters just brought over. "Yes I do, I'm actually looking for a place to buy here, lately California has been too much, LA just doesn't do it for me anymore" his brown eyes glimmer and I can't help but get lost in the depth of them. "If you ask me New York is the best, something new to do at all times and people rarely care to look around, so it's easy to get lost in the crowd." He smiles at me, thanking the waitress for the food without taking his eyes off of me. "You'll have to show me, cause I do agree with you, but I haven't spent much time in New York. Any place you love, that's like a secret?"
I giggle, eating some of the pasta I ordered. "Well if I told you it wouldn't be a secret anymore, would it?" Joshua shakes his head adjusting the hat on his head, eating a bit as well. "Could be our secret." He says looking at me. I blush like crazy and look down, his stare too much for me. I can't ignore the way my heart skips a beat, or the way my breath get caught in the back of my throat. "Could be." I mumble, looking at him through my lashes. A blush appears on his round cheeks, as he wiggles around in his seat.
"You look beautiful today by the way, not that you don't look beautiful every day, but-" "Thank you" I giggle at his sweet demeanor, a blush creeping up on both of our cheeks now. He let's out a little laugh as well and we both break into hysterics over how we're both acting, like two little kids. "So I think I should tell you the concept for the video" Joshua adds and I nod. "Well this song was inspired by my parents, they were highschool sweethearts, so I was thinking we could play them in the video." I watch as he goes on to tell me about how the whole thing would play out, starting with me walking down the aisle at our wedding and then cutting into a montage of memories from the past, how we met, our prom, graduation, every little thing that led up to us ending at the altar.
"That's so beautiful, I'd be honored to do it. I'm happy you thought of me for this." Licking his lips, they stretch out into a bright smile. "I know it might of seemed a bit out of the blue, but I've been a fan for a while and this song means a lot to me, so I thought: it's now or never Josh" he scratches the back of his head, snickering at himself. "This pasta is really good, I've never been here before." I say looking around the small restaurant. The place is almost too small to be called a restaurant, a hew tables inside and a few outside where we're sat. The early spring is starting to make it's away in New York, the shy sunshine giving everything a beautiful glow. "I found it a year ago I think, I had a few gigs to play here in New York and one of my band mates told me about this place." I wipe my lips with a tissue before speaking. "It's nice, not very common for the upper east side, I'll be for sure coming back"
We eat together, talking about little nothings, making small conversation, laughing here and there. Soon enough an hour has past but it barely feels like I've been here a minute. I haven't felt this good in a minute, like there's no worry in the world and no pressure. It doesn't matter if we get photographed together, doesn't matter if we waste too much time, nothing matters, just us. "Hang on" he leans over the table and brushes some of my hair out of my face, lifting the cap off of my head, surprising me with a small kiss, on the top of my forehead. He sits back down, blushing profusely as I'm still a bit starstruck. "That was-" "lovely" we talk over each other and our eyes meet, getting stuck.
I can feel myself leaning closer to him, still staring into his eyes, mesmerized by the dark chocolate color of them. I never knew I'd find brown eyes to be beautiful, but right now I do. Being so close to him I can smell the faint perfume of his cologne, young and bold, a bit minty with some flower undertones, very different from Austin's, dark musky scent. Before I can get any closer, my phone rings, pulling us out of the trance we've been stuck into. "Sorry" I mumble before answering Levis, my assistant.
"Hi I'm at your place, are you on your way? I want to give you the scripts I have and go over some more scheduling for the upcoming month." I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose, I completely forgot about him coming over. Looking at my watch, I'm only 30 minutes late. "I'll be there in 30, please excuse me!" Levis assures me that's all fine and I put my phone in my bag, after texting Matt to bring the car around. "I have to go, have your assistant email mine. I loved having lunch with you, Josh" I say pushing him, the card for my assistant.
"I had a good time as well." We both get up and share a tight hug. I allow myself to breathe in his scent, and I can't help but notice he does the same. As we pull apart, our hands linger over each other. "Give me your phone." I say and he complies. I quickly put my number in, naming the contact (Y/n)💟. Giving him the phone back, he sucks in a breath, noticing the emoji I used. "I guess it's our thing now, the Purple Heart?" Joshua asks tilting his head. "I guess so."
"Well I'm happy, cause I didn't know if this would be too much" he says, before searching in the pockets of his coat, pulling out a small velvet bag. "Give me your hand" he says and I put my hand forward, his fingers working on opening the little bag and then turning it upside down he shakes it softly. Something small and silver lands in my hand and he put the velvet bag away, taking the thing, that I now see it's a bracelet, out of the palm of my hand. "Allow me, please" he says.
I lift the sleeve of my blazer slightly and he puts the bracelet on. It's a dainty silver chain with a Purple Heart. The jewelry sits nicely on my wrist and I can't help the way my heart stops in it's tracks. I look up at him wide eyed and throw my arms around his neck, holding him tight. "Thank you, I love it." I say and give his cheek a small kiss. Joshua's hands go to my waist holding me tight to him. "You're very welcome, honey" the pet name, makes my knees buckle, as I snuggle my face further into his neck. "I have to go, I'm sorry."
He shakes his head, bringing his hands up to my face. "Don't be, I'll call you tomorrow, would that be ok?" Joshua asks. "Yes it would" I smile and pull away from him, when Matt stops the car next to us. I give him one more look and blow him a kiss, getting in the car. He fakes catching the kiss against his heart, making me laugh.
Matt drives away and I look at Joshua through the tinted windows. I'm smiling like crazy and I feel butterflies in my stomach. It's so strange, what's going on with me, getting so easily swept away by these men. Am I going insane? Probably, although there's this small voice in the back of my head, saying I'm just growing up and allowing myself to feel these things for once. "Did you have a good time, miss?" Matt asks me, being the nice person he's always been. "Yeah I did actually, he seems nice doesn't he?" I fiddle with the bracelet around my wrist, the slight cold of the metal being a comforting sensation. "He does miss, did he get that for you?" He says noticing the bracelet and I nod, lifting my arm up, to show him better. "It suits you, he's got taste." Here I can agree with Matt, once more, he does have nice taste, the jewelry really fits my personality and the fact that he thought about it, from our dms, it leaves me flabbergasted.
When we get back to my place, Matt and I ride the elevator together, meeting Levis in my entryway, talking on the phone. "You could've made yourself at home, Levis, you know that" I say going over to the fridge to get the water pitcher, picking two glasses as well. "Come on!" I move my head in the direction of the study as Matt, goes to his office that he has here. "Ok what have you got for me!" I say excited.
He sits down in front of me at the desk. "So these are some scripts I thought you'd like, a movie called "The in between" for Netflix, a small part on stranger things, and some more movies. I'm waiting on something exciting though, but it's still in the 'maybe' trails so there's no script." I listen closely taking the papers he hands down to me. "Next I have here your schedule for the month and I'm waiting on Joshua's assistant to email me about when the music video will shoot and where. I also have people calling me nonstop from different publications, that want you to give statements about new music and relationships" he winces at the last part as I sigh, taking off my blazer and sinking further into the chair. "Sorry, I know, don't worry I've refused them all for now, but-"
"But at one point I'll have to speak with them, I know, but let's get them after the Oscars so I can work some more on music for the next two weeks, everything after the awards will be hectic, no matter the outcome" he nods, taking down notes. "Ok tomorrow you have the first fitting, Chanel will dress you right?" Levis asks, to make sure he's got everything down. "Yeah, I want something classic and comfy." He puts that down in his planer as well. And we go like that for the next few hours and then I go to change and get ready to start on some of those audition tapes.
When my tired body finally melts into the marshmallow mattress, I'm left torn in between all these feelings. When I close my eyes I see Austin's blue eyes, piercing into mine, I still feel the ghost of his kiss on my cheek. And then when everything becomes too much, too real, I turn around in bed and I get a whiff of Joshua's scent, the ridiculous imaginary weight of the dainty bracelet, holding my right hand down. My heart beats too fast and I barely catch my breath, it feels like I'm running, when I'm just in bed, dreaming about two people, two very different people, because one could be my calm and ease and the other could be my adrenaline and euphoria. One of them is allowed and the other is well....forbidden

𝙈𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙈𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘 | E.Kirishima x Reader
Pairing: Kirishima/ reader, Bakugo/ reader (mentioned)
Summary: You shouldn't want him and he shouldn't want you, it's sinful and forbidden. But he can't help coming back to you, and you can't do anything but take him in every single time. Until today that is.
Word Count: 3.6k
Warnings: Aged up characters (twenties), NSFW 18+, plot with some p//rn but it's not very detailed, unprotected sex (please use condoms everyone), cheating, casual penetrative sex, jealousy, the seggz is pretty vanilla though
↪A/N: tennis player Kirishima, tennis player Kirishima, idk how I came up with it but I can't get it out of my head, written for @doinmybesthere 's 3k event collab and based on The Hills by the Weeknd, don't be shy to tell me if you liked it, I almost wrote 4k in a day which is unusual for me
5.30pm [Missed Call: Red]
5.31pm [Missed Calls(2): Red]
The bubbling notifications are spamming your phone, each call, succeeding the other in persistence and length, making your phone crawl onto your coffee table in restless buzzing. To your salvation the device is on silent; you're just unable to bear the overwhelming sound of your ringtone echo through the empty walls of your apartment, to let it bounce between concrete like a slimy ball, only for it to hit you on the face with tremendous force.
It's one of those days that you can't answer Kirishima. Too perplexed in the wields of your mind, blaming yourself for this horrendous situation, delivering raw swears at him for simply existing.
You don't know how it came to this nor when was the exact moment things switched. Was it at the party that you met him? Or the thousandth time you took him in and let him ruin relationship after relationship. Either way it was horrible for not only you, but also him, and all the people that have been caught up in the sidelines of this rotten affair.
You shouldn't want this anymore and truly, you don't. You're tired of being the second choice, of hiding behind your little finger, crying yourself to sleep at night, only to put on a sultry face for every time he comes. Once, twice a month.
[New Messages: Red]
Babe, you there?
Read 5.38pm
[New Messages: Red]
Babe I got practice at 8.
I know you're reading those.
Read 5.39pm
[Red is typing…]
[New Messages: Red]
I'm outside btw
A fresh, tremendously sharp wave of anxiety rushes through you at the little notification -it can't be like this again, not today. The thudder in your chest is unbearable, heart too weak to stomach the weight of your decision, fingers too reluctant to type out your response.
He's probably smirking while staring at his phone, not a single care in his head. It's loathing to your mind as you confirm your speculation, shooting a glance out of your window, landing your eyes on his car.
He shouldn't be here.
His thousands dollar car doesn't belong in your urban street, not in your side of the town. And it's so dangerous that he's doing this to see you. You've played the worst scenarios in your head a thousand times, millions of headlines on sites and the news about this; Eijirou Kirishima, on his way to claiming a fifth Grand Slam, caught in affair with university student.
Atrocious, degrading, exposing. A hit to his career that would bother the media for a couple of weeks and paint your name in mud along the way.
Why can't he just be content with the model that he's with? You're nothing like her, not as pretty and you don't have her body, you don't have her face, but he still says he finds you better, says he knows you better, but he just can't be with you.
[You]
Can't do it today
Sorry
You're good to yourself, only when you deny him and only when you feel the satisfaction of being the one to do so. It's pointless to sulk over saying no. He can go fuck other girls, play with their hearts and leave you to your otherwise peaceful life. Even if it is just for today.
You don't have the chance to let a smile creep to your face when your doorbell rings. The jiggling sound bursts into your eardrums once and twice, three dreaded times and they're enough to make your stomach churn, your neck tight and your skin ache.
You contemplate on opening the door for him, subconsciously letting yourself feel like a vulnerable prey, who, after running away to save yourself, is choosing to walk into the wolf's den, so willingly that you can feel yourself drifting away with each step you're taking towards the door.
"Babe,"
The swing of your door handle, the crack of your wrist, the creaking of your door as it opens to reveal him; they're all embarrassing. You can't tell if they fall short on his ears, too caught up in the way he looks -all swollen muscles and tall legs. You're running out of courage to say no and he knows this.
He's not as innocent as this cheeky smile frames him out to be, he's not the sweetheart everyone wants him to be either.
He's Eijirou, who's selfishly standing on your door, who's barging his way in your apartment, who's grabbing your cheeks and slamming your face in his, biting your lips until he draws blood, just to punish you for standing up against him.
Your door is slammed behind him, one bend of his knee and it's falling into its rightful place. To shield the sins of your affair, to bring you comfort and privacy as he attacks parts of your neck, your chest. Places that only squeeze perfectly under his touch.
"Babe," He calls again, in between soft kisses. "What's gotten into you?"
You frown and try to look away, past his cocoa colored orbs, past the swelling that's taking over his lips -and yours- with a numbing, tingling sensation.
"Eijirou—"
"I don't have much time in between training, I got a game the day after tomorrow."
It's always like this, you know. He doesn't have to tell you twice or try to excuse his own self for what he does or how he acts. You're pushed between schedules, or slammed into his timetable like a truck when he feels like indulging with you again, hidden between the lines of his free time.
You're sure at this point that it's the thrill he's after. The sinful taste of your lips on his, how he feels in control while chasing after you, when you can't keep up with him.
His lips don't taste like sour cherry anymore, but you let them wiggle against yours with triumph, you let him want to catch his breath as he pulls back and you put the minimum effort in returning the passion you receive.
You pull back, ignoring the words he's whispering against your face, only to take in his features once again.
Soft black hair pulled into a low ponytail, spiky bangs that fly all over his face and his tips drowned in a fiery, foxy red. The only reminder for who he was before his tennis career blew up. For who he was before he turned into this cocky womanizer whom you're desperately after with a longing heart.
"I'm just not in the mood today."
"Well let's get you in the mood then huh?"
He smiles, nose scrunching and chapped lips hiding behind his gums as his hand moves to your thigh, tagging your shorts with furry. As if he's desperate to have you, right here and now. As if bending you over the couch will help put out a fire in him. That's how he always convinces you to keep this going.
He's making you feel like not having you this way is insufferable.
You're buried in the crook of his neck while being pushed onto the couch, nibbling a soft spot that you've found, rubbing his skin on the top of your tongue. You know how to do this without leaving a mark, you can hold back from wanting to take all you can get from him.
But today it's different. It's going to be the last time.
It's not like any other time you've told yourself that you are going to end this. Today you're going to leave a mark, you're going to bite your way into his skin and drink from his poison -the intimate attention he's only ever willing to give- and you'll get drunk in it.
"Fuck," He grunts against your lips. "Fuck, don't stop that feels good."
You don't stop, eager to listen to him, to breathe into his neck before you wrap your lips a little lower and closer to his collarbone. You should be asking if this will cause him problems, but gone is the guilt that veils your coinsense otherwise. You suckle on a spot and then another, stealing his groaning moans one by one as they fall from his lips, plushing them softly in a spongy part of your brain, where they can rest forever, until you've forgotten them.
"Get your shirt off Eijirou," You plea, ogling eyes watering from the pressure that's applied in the apex of your thighs and he's quick to follow your command, lips curling upwards in a sweetheart smirk.
You're going to miss the way the apples of his cheeks cover his eyes when he smiles like this. But there's no going back for you and him.
With legs that feel like burning rubber you hug around his horse, watching the way his muscles flex and fold with his snappy movements. His shirt, tousled and wrinkly, tossed in an unknown corner of your living room, only for him to guess where it is after he's gotten his fix of you.
Thick fingers probe at your sides, pulling your shirt downwards in a silent plea, take off your shirt, give him the satisfaction that he wants, indulge into this as much as he wants you to.
But today, you're not in the mood for this. So instead of pulling your shirt off, you unbuckle your pants, pulling them down at the most dreadful speed, making him bite his lip impatiently.
You won't miss this, the way he's expecting so many things of you.
And if he notices something's wrong, he doesn't say a word, presumably content with getting what he wants; the rear view of the gap between your legs, where he can bury himself and get lost for the next thirty minutes.
"Fuck baby," he moans. "Why do you smell so good?"
You grunt, averting your gaze from his as he pushes your bangs away from your face with the back of his hand. You want to miss his puppy eyes. Ghosting him won't be easier for you if you don't.
But damn if he couldn't read you this well, things would be easier.
"Not in the mood to talk?" You look even further away to avoid the question, "babe, you can tell me if you're not well, you'll feel better if you let it out"
You don't need someone to tell you how to feel. You've decided when the two of you are going to be through. It's set and done, even if he feels at the top of the world right now, you won't inflate his ego anymore.
"M fine Eijirou, put it in," You bite his lip, putting huge effort in making him forget about what he thinks it's bothering you. "Want you to put it in m'kay?"
Sultry, fake voice, he's heard it all before and he doesn't have the right to call you out for it. Whatever he does next, you're his for the moment and for the last time.
Repeating is your rightful way of convincing yourself of not giving up on your decision. If only he could have broken up before deciding to wet himself in you, if only you hadn't taken him so eagerly, if only you hadn't become just like him. Welcoming him despite availability status, afraid to lose him, saying that a little sex wouldn't hurt. If you could do this on repeat, then you could get rid of him quite as easily.
You're not better than him and he's taken your vulnerability to him for granted. He's loved the attention you've paid him from time to time, whenever he's given you so much as a mere call.
You should pretend to moan, to hurt his ego, but as he's delving into you, slowly, mellowy, his kisses feel like burning sunshine, August breeze against your skin, kissing your shoulders lightly. It hurts that this salvation is coming from his mouth, as it moves rhythmically against every inch of you.
"Fuck, fuck, ah, you feel so good, you know that?"
You don't answer, nor do you wrap your lips around him. You don't move them against his when he goes to kiss you, but you coo into his warm embrace once his hands come to cradle you in a tight embrace.
"I love you," He slips up and you contemplate on whether you have to start hating him from this very moment. "I just wanna be with you, I—" He grunts. “—this is why you don't believe him, but nonetheless you hold a moan in as well. "Fuck, I'll break up just for you.”
Now that's a new one. A new addition to the long list of red flags you have with his name on top. You can't fall for it. You absolutely can't. If you do, he'll treat you just like this, he'll fuck behind your back and kiss you goodnight before going off to sleep with someone else. Like he's slept with you, once, twice, thrice.
And you're going to hate being the one who's fooled, despite deserving it more than anyone else. And another girl, or guy, is going to be his subject of desire.
You shouldn't want him to be yours, but you're lewding your 'I love yous' out of your mouth like they're nothing, poisoning your heart until there's nothing left but dust and sucked up blood, all devoured by the greed he's made you feel.
"You love me too?"
"I do," You cry, rocked between him and the couch, neck hurting by the way he's digging his teeth in yours.
"I'll fucking leave everything for you babe,"
He shouldn't. He won't. You tell yourself he's only saying this because he wants to come, to make you feel dirty with his actions and fish out words that make him ecstatic or send him over the edge from your mouth.
Rhythms are peaking, his hips burning from his movements, foreheads are dripping in sweat, lips taste salty against each other. The perfect picture, the most tingling sensation, and you're too fucked to go back, or keep yourself content with him. It feels the same as the last time, a numbing knot in your stomach, commanding you to rip your heart out and throw it away, spooning mewls out of your mouth.
If you could, you'd mute him, not wanting to listen to how beautiful he sounds as he's coming down from his high. If you could, you'd look away, and wouldn't try to burn the image of his body as he's falling apart in your mind.
"That was—" The sigh that leaves his chest through his mouth is liberating, you can tell—"amazing. I still love you, so much babe."
His hand soothing the pain of his thrusts, does nothing to make you feel better. You want to shove it away, but you don't, unhappy with the way you're turning out to be.
"It's time for you to go, Eijirou, isn't it?" You remind him. A hand pushing him off of you and quickly smoothing your T-shirt over your legs to deprive him of the view that'd make him wear a smug of triumph.
"So quick to get me to go. Did you find someone else again sweetheart?"
You don't reply as you're putting on your underwear and pants, shoving his shirt into him with a heavy hand.
"You did, didn't you?"
"None of your business, go off to your practice, your girl, don't patronize me anymore."
He gruffs, beautiful features scowling in that stormy gaze that reeks of his authority, "Here I am pouring my heart on you and you found someone else"
"Eijirou, it's seven thirty, if I were you, I wouldn't be late for practice. You got a game the day after tomorrow."
No more dealing with his pouting, you're going to bawl your eyes out if you have to do it. The sooner he's out of your house, the sooner you'll get this over with; the tight lamp in your throat, the image of him smiling at you like this, him admitting feelings that he shouldn't have.
Hurting him isn't the role that suits you. Because you can't do it. You can't hurt that warm sunshine he has on his face. He has to be the one to hurt you like he's been the one to drive you away. It's too late for him to change or reverse your roles.
You don't want to fight and he knows it.
He knows you, so well, well enough to use you as he wishes to, letting you believe you're using him too. You're going to make him watch you slip away, and he won't do anything about this.
So he's eager to leave as you're pushing him out of the door, he doesn't cup your cheek with his hand, and doesn't kiss your forehead tenderly like he always does.
"You should come to this party Mina is throwing, let me meet your new guy."
Like hell you'd ever do this, he knows, but teasing won't hurt a bit. Eijirou can deal with you dating other men, he's claimed you well before, he'll do it again if he has to, especially now that he's decided to have you.
"Yeah yeah, and if I do, don't ever call me again, 'kay?"
You're too good to not do as he says, or not to fall back to him, and he's too good to not come back to you. To him, you're a match made in heaven, to you, you're a lost cause, burning in the fiery pits of hell as atonement for your sins.
He doesn't know that you'll fall apart before dressing up, how you'll tell yourself you're not doing this for him, but as a statement against him.
You're no better than him, in fact, you're worse.
…
The only problem is, that when Eijirou pulls up at Mina's party after practice, you're already there. Drink in your hand, flared jeans hugging your legs, layered tank tops that cover the bruising truth of this evening, laughing at whatever your friends are saying.
When he puts out his phone, calloused fingers furiously typing a text addressed to you, you're too far gone into another glass, dancing a little dance before grabbing everyone's cups to go for a refill, greeting them in that silent way of yours, drunken smile.
And then you'll pass him by and blink at him, you'll mutter a small greeting and he'll grab you by the hand and whisper in your ear just how hard he'll take you driving the night. You'll swoon, moan, forget about the drinks and follow him anywhere he leads you.
That's how everybody knows about the two of you.
This time, though, you don't cast a single eye on him. In fact, you're tainting him, walking past him while ignoring him, leaving him awestruck and hurt, like his confessions earlier in the day meant nothing to you.
It's a hit to his heart, how your jaw drops as you bump into Bakugo over the kitchen counter, eyes too wide at the sight of him. How your finger dances playfully on his chest and as you smile at him when he whispers something in your ear.
It's infuriating how you drop the cups near the sink and follow Bakugo outside, or how the blond waves at him with a pressed smile against his lips, signaling that he'll be busy for a while.
His insides churn, tummy aching in a feeling of guilt, one unlike anything he's felt before. Losing you doesn't taste in the way he thought he would, it's worse; sour and poisoning. It makes him flee the party, furious and bitter.
When he's back, his body is heavy, feet dragging him across his apartment, mind blank as he follows his basic routine before bed time, fixated on how easy it seemed for you to just ignore him and flee with one of his friends as soon as he came over to the party he invited you to, wondering how you could be so ruthless with him all of a sudden.
Sweet talking Kirishima with a smile of gold, the sweetheart of the professional Tennis scene and you're over him in the split of a second, pushing him away from you without an explanation or heart wrenching speech. Not giving him the satisfaction of some closure, just forcing the cold tempo of your sudden departure in the depths of his heart.
He pays no mind to the girl that sleeps beside him, back turned to him like she's oceans apart, despite the unspoken bound that's keeping them together. He'll leave her, make up for all the damage that he's done, in any way that he can manage to.
It all comes down to the fact that no one can love you like he does, no one can want you like he does. Someone can do it better, but you have to want him.

Forever and Always -
Joaquin Torres x Reader
Summary: College friends, Y/N and Joaquin reunite after years apart when Sam Wilson calls upon both of them for help. Although, she’s still a little caught up in how they left things.

A deep frown set into her features as she glared at him. She had woken up this morning to a message from Sam asking for assistance on a particular case of interest, of which, had her expertise written all over it. However, Sam had failed to mention that he had also contacted another party to work on the case.
Joaquin Torres
Initially, Sam was confused about the situation but her reaction made it pretty clear there was some history behind it. The last time they had seen each other was College, right before Joaquin was entered into the Air-Force Academy, over six years ago. He had grown a lot in the past years, yet, he still had the same boyish charm. A sharp jaw with his fluffy brown hair and those deep brown eyes that stared into you innocently. Clad in his green camo uniform, his title tacked on his shoulder for everyone to see, Lieutenant Torres.
And I stare at the phone, he still hasn't called
And then you feel so low you cant feel nothing at all
And you flashback to when he said, "Forever and always"
“So I’m guessing you two know each other?”
“I’m sorry, Sam, but I can’t-I can’t do this.” Y/N averts her eyes to Sam and huffs, stalking back towards her car. Joaquin sighs and looks back at Sam, rubbing his sweaty palms on his pants before standing up.
“Sorry, I’ll uh-be right back.”
Joaquin nods and jogs to catch up with Y/N as she struts toward her car. Quickly intercepting her, Joaquin jogs in front to block her path, “Hey, can we talk?”
“I don’t know, can we?”
Joaquin sighs and rubs his face, looking back at Y/N as she continues to glare at him,
“I know it’s been a while-”
She scoffs and rolls her eyes,
“Yeah, it's been a while, Joaquin. It's been six years.”
“Look, I regret how we left things back then and I’m sorry, okay? We were young and I said things I didn’t mean.”
“No, you see, Joaquin. You meant it. You did, otherwise, we would have fixed things.”
“So what, it was between choosing you or the Force?”
She shakes her head,
“No. It was between breaking your promise or keeping your word.”
“I never wanted to hurt you and I’m sorry that I did, but I can’t change the past. I can only hope you see that I’m different now, as I’m sure you are.”
Y/N purses her lips as her eyes burn, playing with her car keys in her hands.
“I never expected you to stay for long. I know what the demand is with this job, but, Joaquin-you never even called.”, she whispers. “I don’t-I never held any contempt for you, I was just-so alone.”, she sucks in a breath.
“After you left, I wasn’t exactly in a good place and then the Blip happened and the world changed. And, I was so alone. I never expected some grand gesture from you or anyone. I just wanted someone to care about me.”, her voice tapered off. “Cause you were right there for so long and I got used to that for it to suddenly disappear.”
Joaquin draws his eyes over her, the weakened chips in her resolve beginning to show. He knows how difficult these past few years have been for the world, but he never failed to resolve the guilt lingering from their parting.
“I’m not going to make up excuses or scenarios to justify what happened. I'm so sorry, hermosa.”, causing her heart to jump in her chest. “It’ll always be one of my deepest regrets, how we left things.”
Oh, and it rains in your bedroom
Everything is wrong
It rains when you're here and it rains when you're gone
'Cause I was there when you said, "Forever and always"
“And what was the other one?”, she interjected.
He hesitated, looking back up at her as she finally engaged eye contact.
“You said it was one of your regrets.”
Joaquin slowly stepped closer, dropping next to her as he glanced at her hands. He drew his hand closer, waiting for a reaction before he clasped one of her hands in his.
“My only other regret was letting you go without telling you the truth. How I feel, how I’ve always felt.”
Her heart hammers in her chest, threatening to burst as she stares up at Joaquin.
“You always spoke of that spark between two people that let you know you were with the right person. Well, while I don’t believe in soulmates of that kind, I know that you understood me.”
“I know that I left you in a tough place and I hate myself for it. I understand if you don’t want to see me again. I’ll walk away from the mission and let you take this one with Sam. I-uh-just wanted to let you know, I am sorry and I’m willing to make it up to you, every day, if that’s what you want.”
“You were all I wanted.”, she murmurs as he looks at her with those big brown eyes, forcing her demeanour to melt under the pressure. Y/N shakes her head,
“I was upset for the longest time and uh-conflicted about you, for sure. I guess the universe has something to say about that, huh?”
They both laugh as she gathers her bearings, shoving her keys in her pocket.
“You’re not leaving?”
“Well, uh, Sam did call me to help with the case and I’m sure we’re keeping him waiting.”
Joaquin’s eyes widen before he nods in agreement,
“Yeah, of course.”
“We’ll figure it out. We always did.”, she nodded, stepping closer to Joaquin as he did the same.
“I’ll be here when you’re ready, hermosa.”, he squeezes her hand as she nods.
“So, uh, are you coming inside then, or are we gonna stand here all day?”, she hums.
“Oh, uh, yeah, yeah lets go.”
She looks at the vast landscape of the airbase, whistling as they walk in. Y/N finally gets a proper look at all of the planes and machinery.
“I’ll uh, give you a proper tour later, if you’re up for it.”
Y/N coughs,
“Yeah, I’d, uh-I’d like that.”
“So, uh, it's Lieutenant Torres? Special title.”
“You don’t uh-”
“Oh, I wasn’t-”
He chuckles at her raised eyebrows,
“I think I’ll stick to Torres.”, she smirks.
“Just Torres, then? So Cariño isn’t in the cards?”, he teased, earning a gasp from Y/N as she bats his arm.
“Need I remind you of the nickname you earned while playing for the varsity soccer team?”
Joaquin chuckles and shakes his head, nodding along as Sam walks over, throwing an arm around Y/N’s shoulders.
“My two favourite people.”, Sam hummed.
“Bucky isn’t on that list?”
“No, Bucky is not on that list. He exists on a plane far off the list where I can just see him.”, as Y/N’s chest shakes with laughter.
“Oh, give him a break, Sam.”
“-we have a long history and so he has to earn his way to move up that list. Flirting with my sister? Now that is one way to get bumped down.”, he scoffs, nodding his head toward Torres’ office where the case files remain.
As they settled in the office, Joaquin sat down at the desk while Sam sat in front of him. Y/N rests on the side of the desk, reading the case files to find their lead. They continued for hours, cups of coffee and small conversations exchanged before it began to grow late into the night. Y/N yawned and crossed her arms as she looked over Joaquin’s shoulder, her hand sliding next to Joaquin’s. Her eyes trace the writing, missing the glance he takes from the side. Sam catches this, even behind his folder as he glances at the two. He had seen a couple of these instances over the course of the couple hours, opting to remain silent about the matter...for now.
Sam yawned and picked up his cup of coffee, throwing it in the trash as he mentioned something about grabbing water. As he left the room, Y/N’s eyes tiredly drifted from the desk and met Joaquin’s gaze, a blush flourishing across her cheeks as she returned to the pages.
“What?”, she murmured, wiping a hand over her face.
Joaquin shook his head,
“Nothing, you just-you still look the same as I remember.”
“I hope that’s a good thing.”
“No-uh-definitely!”, he stammered, playing with a pen on his desk as Y/N smirked at his antics.
“I like the uniform,”
His eyes widened, flashing his head over
“You do?”
“Don’t get a big head now, Torres.”, she laughs, "God, you still have those doe eyes, Bambi.”
Joaquin’s cheeks flush, “Only you’ve ever called me that.”
Y/N giggles and tilts her head at Joaquin,
“I know.”
A silence settles between them as the smiles linger on their mouths, leaving a comfortable aura in the room. Y/N coughs as she returns to the pages, a smirk rising on her face as Joaquin’s eyes linger on her. He slides the folder over so they’re sharing it between them. When Sam returns, he’s greeted with the sight of the pair sitting closely together. A soft smile rises on Sam’s face as he quietly watches the interaction as Joaquin listens attentively, his lips a breath away from Y/N’s as she points at the map and asks for his insight. Y/N looks up and flushes at the contact, biting her lip to hide a smile. Joaquin sighs dreamily to himself as Y/N looks up at Sam's entrance.
"Any developments?"
"A couple.", Joaquin murmured as his eyes remained on Y/N, entranced in her.

Since you saw this morning Olivia Benson walking downstairs accompanied by Voight, your good mood got burned into ashes just in a sight. He hadn't told you that she was going to come and, actually, he hadn't why to tell you. For him, it's only part of his job. But you know it's something else for her. You have seen her how she looks at your man. The unjustified and unnecessary touches on his back, on his arm. The stupid smiles she draws to him, that you would be delighted of erasing using your fist.
You have never, ever, been the kind of jealous girl. You trust your boyfriend blindly, but you don't trust her. You can't. You have tried it with all your efforts, but then you heard her laughing for no reason and Hank responding with a fleeting smile. You haven't talked him about how you feel, because the age gap between both makes you look stupid sometimes. Fortunately, you're professional enough to not let these things affect your job and your relationship. You have learnt how to hide your emotions, even if sometimes your friends suspect that something is going on by the tic that makes you blink your left eye unconsciously.
Aware that he must be there with his amazing friend, Kim places a hand on your shoulder trying to encourage you to cross the entrance and come into the Molly's. Licking your lips as you calm yourself a little, you nod pushing the door to be embraced by the warm atmosphere inside it, covering you from the cold breeze of Chicago. Letting your eyes travel around the place, you greet some of your friends waving a hand, before landing your gaze on your boyfriend. He turns at that exact moment, not even trying to contain a smile. You show him another back, but his disappears when he sees you passing him away straight to the Unit's table without greeting him. And Olivia notices it, but you don't care.
“What's up, trouble?” Jay pulls down your hair, earning a laugh from you.
“Platt said you crashed a patrol”. Wrinkling your nose in a funny gesture, after Adam's words, you take a seat next to him.
“These aren't the things you have to learn from us, you know it, right?” Antonio makes you all chuckle, calling to his sister raising a finger to ask for more beers.
“I caught the bad guy, didn't I?”
“Yeah, crashing a car”. Atwater raises his eyebrows, leaning over the table.
“But I caught the bad guy, that's my job not to take care of the cars. I'm not a mechanic…”
“BUT A COP!” You all say in unison, as always, like a famous quote.
As soon as the beers arrive, you make another toast for your car lost in action. And everything is fun until you feel a presence behind you and the silence gets installed around your table. Gulping and licking your bottom lip, as your friends drink from their bottles trying to pretend that you all weren't doing what you were doing, you turn around over your stool forcing a smile.
“Having fun, officer (Y/L/N)?” Platt's voice gives you the kind of shivers you can hide.
“No, no, n— I mean… yes”. The look on her face causes you to swallow again. “I me—mean, no?”
“It's a simple question. Yes or no”.
“Trudy, leave the kid alone”.
Saved by the bell. Your hero.
“Crash a car is part of our tradition, ain't it?” Hank tries to put some humor in the situation, traveling his eyes from her to you.
“Hm”. The woman just replies, before walking away.
You don't know about what kind of tradition he is talking of, but at least he has saved your ass. Again. Not being able to look at him, you sip from your beer trembling yet. Probably, tomorrow Crowley will ask for a convincing explanation. I caught the bad guy will not work with her, that's for sure. Feeling a soft touch in your lower back, you raise your orbs from the bottle to your boss, who makes a brief move with his chin to point at the back door at the end of the bar. You don't want to go, you know exactly what it's going to happen and you just want to forget the intense day you have had. But he raises his eyebrows with that cockiness usual on him, about to drag you if you don't put down from your stool.
With an imperceptible sight, you end up obeying in silence under the attentive eyes of your friends. Hank walks behind you with both hands in the pocket of his jeans, as you wear your jacket to zip it above your chest. The fresh air hits your face once you reach the Molly's back alley, resting your back against the wall with your face bowed to your military black boots. Placing himself in front of you, he studies thoroughly your gesture, your lips pressed and the lack of eye contact.
“What's the matter?”
Shaking your head slightly, you cross one leg behind the other, putting your hands on your lower back.
“You're jealous, aren't you?”
Letting go an exaggerated chuckle, you roll your eyes before gluing them on him. “You're calling that jealousy? If she can still use her legs, I'm not being jealous”.
“It ain't a good moment to be sarcastic, sweetheart”.
“I'm not. She is just a colleague, right?”
Hank nods in silence tilting his head closer and you're sure he can hear your heart speeding up under your skin. He always does that, putting you nervous only to prove the power he has on you, on your body, on your senses. And you hate him. You hate how proud he feels because of it. The grin on his face causes a chill down your spine, standing up from the wall to pretend that he is wrong, that he doesn't control your reactions.
“Hm… Good to know you're conscious of her position. She's gonna stay in my house tonight. We didn't plan to need more than one day and she doesn't have a place”.
For a moment, the image of you punching his face runs your mind, keeping your hands inside the pockets of your jacket to close them in two fist until you feel your nails hurting your palms. There are a lot of replies to his words stuck in your throat, but if it's a proof of trust, you would fail miserably. This is a clash of titans and you're not going to let him win.
“That's fine”. You respond squinting at him, taking a step ahead almost facing Hank. “Anything else?”
“No”.
“Okay”.
With a feigned smile, you turn to the left to leave the alley and come back to your private party, which means to get drunk until Burgess and Hailey have to carry you home.
“What an interesting night is gonna be”. Hank whispers seeing you grabbing the doorknob, teasing you as only he knows how to do.
Kissing your lips as your steps stop dead, you turn your head about to lose your calm.
“If I see her putting a hand on your leg again, I'm gonna break every single fucking bone of her body”.
You couldn't help it. He knows exactly which words he has to use to push you to the edge. The worst part is the fun he usually has doing it. Walking towards you moving his head as if he was nodding, Hank caresses his bottom lip with a forefinger looking thoughtful.
“I didn't think of you as someone violent”.
“Fucking watch me, Voight”.
“Hm…”
Containing a laugh, he opens the door for you, pointing at the inside with a hand. Clearly challenging you. But before you can pass him away, the sergeant grabs your forearm to push you back and lean his lips over your ear.
“She booked the hotel yesterday”. His raspy voice touring your head makes you feel your cheeks burning in shame.
He has won already and you know it. Wanting to leave him again, he pulls you back again hearing the heavy snort escaping your mouth.
“She knows who you are. Told her this morning”.
Did really he? Arching up one of your eyebrows, you can't help but turn your face slightly at him. Your parted lips reveal the surprise and the confusion. Why can she know it, but not your friends? Just because she doesn't work in Chicago? It isn't fair. At least, under your opinion. It's not like you're going to act like Voight's girlfriend and take the advantage of what it means. But it allows you to smile at him when you cross your eyes in the hallways, it allows you to don't have to hide if you want to have lunch together, it allows you to not have to drive two different cars and leave his house before him to work. Small simple things that for you means a lot.
“Cut off the show, boss. Everybody is looking at us”.
It isn't the first time that Hank can't avoid touching you somehow in public, finding the stupidest excuse just to feel you. And he really enjoys putting you nervous, watching the way you lick your lips and bite the bottom one, feel the way your body gets tense when he lays his hands on you, the short frights he gives you coming behind you and whispering ‘officer (Y/L/N)’ in your ear.
Actually, there's no reason why you decided to hide your relationship. You haven't even talked about it. You haven't thought if it's because of the age gap, because of his past, because he is your boss (...). You haven't given it any importance, till you met Olivia Benson a couple months ago. That kind of sergeant who comes from New York and thinks that she runs the Chicago police department. Hank hasn't told you how they met, imagining they did when he was working on the Gang Unit.
“Admit your jealousy”. Tilting his head enough to look into your eyes, the challenging grimace comes back to his face.
Knowing that he's not going to stop, you simply nod. “It isn't fair that other women can… touch you, and I have to wait more than twelve hours just… simply to smile at you without looking suspicious”.
Hank can hear to perfection the hopelessness in your voice, feeling your fingers loosening his grip around your other forearm. It's not a question of possessiveness, but of insecurity; and he's discovering it now, thinking about since when you feel like that.
“Do you wan'me to take you home?”
You shake your head, now with guilt running under your skin because you know it has ruined his night.
“I'm okay, boss. Gonna have some fun with my friends after a long day”.
“Will you have some fun with your boss after that? End the night in my house playing pool, drinking whisky? I will let you win”.
You can't help but show him a fleeting smile, almost curving your lips. That's a yes for him and Hank feels satisfied. Holding your right hand on his, your boyfriend brings it to his mouth placing a tender kiss on the back of it, before letting you go.
Hailey and Burgess are squinting at you, knowing that their suspicions weren't wrong at all. Not saying a word and pretending normality, you sit back on your stool to have a sip from your beer. You're literally sweating right now, and it isn't because of the jacket you are wearing but because of the petty smiles appearing on the other cops.
“You know that we work in Intelligence, right, little trouble?” Antonio is the first one talking jokingly.
“Yeah, and we don't need to be detectives to know what's going on”. Hailey hums resting his arms over the table.
“How is Voight in private? I've always had curiosity. He takes off the stick of his ass when he comes home, or…?”
“Halstead, I can hear you”.
“Yeah, that was the intention, Sarge”. He replies, lifting up his beer in a silent toast.
Turning at Hank just for a second, you can't help but shrug with your eyebrows briefly frowned in a funny grimace that makes him giggle. It was inevitable, since they have seen the way and how close he has talked to you. But now, the pressure within your chest is dropping down, feeling better.

Bad Business Ch. 8: Hunter & the Hunted
Author's Note: It is with extreme anxiety that I post this latest chapter. The stakes are higher than ever, and I'm afraid things still aren't being made very clear, and suspects will still be plentiful.
***
To the childless wife he gives a home, and gladdens her heart with children.
- Ps. 113
Chapter 8:
Hunter and the Hunted
Jack glanced up at the clock and pouted: it was three minutes to nine o'clock in the evening. An earlier announcement reminded all visitors of the approaching end to visiting hours for the day. His time with Lisa, in his opinion, had been all-too-short since she regained consciousness.
"I wish you could stay," Lisa said, even as she yawned, sleep threatening to overtake her. "Talking to the cops today still has me all wrung out."
"I know," Jack murmured. "I'm sorry you had to go through that."
"Jack, they had the audacity to suggest you might have had something to do with what happened to me," Lisa said, finally feeling comfortable enough to tell him. "They asked me about my will."
Jack grimaced, thinking about his own earlier bad dream. "I figured they would."
Lisa shook her head. "I tried to tell them there's no way my loving husband was capable of something like this."
"Thanks for that, Lis," Jack uttered, looking at her with great tenderness. She returned his gaze, thinking how lucky she was to have this wonderful man in her life. He held her right hand in his, gently massaging her knuckles with his thumb, making sure he avoided the I.V. lines.
Another announcement sounded now, insisting all non-staff make their exit as visiting hours were over.
"I guess this is goodnight," she said, reluctantly withdrawing her hand from his soothing grasp.
"But I'll be back tomorrow," Jack pledged as he stood to depart. "Maybe I can plan to stay overnight then, if they'll let me."
"Yeah? Promise?"
"I promise," Jack said, smiling indulgently. "I love you, Lis."
"I love you more, Cowboy."
He bent over her and kissed her lightly on the lips. He was rewarded by her smile of complete contentment. "'Bye," he whispered.
"'Bye," she answered, eyes already closing, but the smile lingered.
***
Jack waited for an elevator to reach his floor. With visiting hours concluded, non-staff activity on the unit had been winding down, and the corridors were fairly empty. When the elevator arrived, Jack stepped aside to let the single occupant—fully dressed in scrubs, surgical cap and mask—disembark. He stepped into the cab to descend. Jack nearly reached his parking lot level when he realised he had forgotten his hat behind in Lisa's hospital room. The thought crossed his mind to just leave it there for now; after all, it would be waiting for him tomorrow when he returned to see Lisa again.
No, he thought, head feels too bare. Plus, it would be another excuse to see his wife, even if it was for a few more seconds. He tapped the number on the display screen to Lisa's floor for the elevator to carry him back. So what if it was already past visiting hours? Surely they would not begrudge him this little errand.
"I forgot my hat," he said sheepishly to the nurse at the desk when he retraced his steps.
"Go on," she said with a knowing smile, waving him through.
***
Lisa had barely begun to drift off when she sensed the presence of someone else in the dim room. Probably another nurse coming for night-check, she thought sleepily. Things had reached a point where she simply let the hospital staff go about their business, whether it was checking her BP, temperature, I.V. lines, the pulse/ox machines, catheter, or whatnot. Sure enough, she could hear the sounds of the other person fiddling around with the medical machinery next to the bed. Next, her nasal cannula was gently removed. Without any warning, something soft yet unyielding dropped heavily onto her entire head, face and neck.
What on earth?! Lisa thought in panic, as her ability to draw a breath ceased completely. Something was suffocating her! Or was it someone?!
I can't breathe! Somebody help me! Her frantic thoughts screamed. She reached blindly for the call button, but it was not in its usual place by her side. Lisa next attempted to raise her right fist to combat this unexpected assault since her injured left arm would be too weak in this fight. Dull blows landed ineffectively on what she imagined might be her assailant's shoulder. She dug her fingernails uselessly into a large hand that was double-gloved. Whatever he was forcing down onto her face remained firmly in place. She tried to cry out, but her voice was totally muted by what she rightly guessed was a pillow. With her strength waning, Lisa desperately attempted to squirm away; the brute responded by leaning against her, using his body weight to keep her from escaping.
I need air! Lisa's already tortured lungs felt like they were burning. Pressure was building in her chest to intolerable levels. An awful stabbing sensation erupted in her left side without warning. Dizzying patterns of coloured blobs and flashes spun and swirled behind her eyelids like a kaleidoscope.
No! I can't die like this! Please, someone, anyone... please come now! Jack!
Blackness engulfed her as consciousness sank away.
***
The door to Lisa's room was unexpectedly closed when Jack arrived, causing him to wonder if there was some sort of private consultation or assessment going on between Lisa and her doctors. Odd for this hour, he mused. He gave the door a gentle tap just in case as he opened it. His eyes immediately fell on a nightmarish scene.
A man—dressed in the same scrubs and the same surgical cap and mask Jack had seen only minutes earlier on the elevator—was leaning over Lisa. Even from this vantage point, he could see the man was smothering her with a pillow. Not just smothering her; he was actively killing her.
Jack did not waste another second. A bellow of fury erupted from his mouth as he charged forward like a wild bull. His target barely had time to react, turning slightly in surprise at the sudden yell. From behind, Jack roughly locked his arm around the other man's neck to drag him away from Lisa.
His quarry delivered a swift elbow to the ribs, causing Jack to gasp in pain. His grip slackened. It was enough for the villain to break free and go on the offensive. Three hard blows landed in quick succession: first to Jack's gut, jaw, then his temple.
The old cowboy staggered back, bringing a hand up to cup the side of his aching head. Though he was hurting, a potent, blind rage continued to propel him towards this piece of scum who dared to harm his wife. Thankfully, he had a slight advantage in height and weight. First, Jack blocked another punch coming his way; next, he slung out a well-aimed fist of his own. With satisfaction, Jack felt his left knuckles connect solidly with the right cheekbone of the other man. Crunch! He followed with a right uppercut to the villain's chin, snapping his head back. An agonized grunt escaped his target's lips. Jack wanted to apply more damage, worked up as he was, adrenalin pumping through his veins. His initial yell of rage and sounds of their brawl, however, had begun to attract the attention of the staff, and the sound of scurrying feet and shouts outside the room put the attacker on alert.
"Code White! Unit 52! Code White! Unit 52!" droned a voice over the public address system.
"Outta my way, old man!" came the goon's muffled croak. He roughly shouldered Jack aside. Caught off-balance, Jack could not catch hold of him as he swept past to the freedom of the open door.
"Stop him!" Jack yelled hoarsely as he turned to give chase, but it was already too late. The other man was a good sprinter and had already disappeared down a hall to a stairwell exit. With dismay, Jack instinctively knew that by the time hospital Protective Services could converge on the unit, Lisa's attacker would be long gone.
Lisa! Was she okay?
"I need help in here, now!" he rasped, even as he rushed to her side. The pillow was still partially obscuring her head. Jack flung it aside to reveal a deathly pale face and blue lips just as three nurses bolted into the room.
"He-he was suffocating her with the pillow. I don't think she's breathing," Jack managed to gasp, horrified at the sight.
"Move aside!" Nurse Cheryl commanded.
Numbly, Jack managed to stumble out of the way, nearly tripping over his own feet.
This can't be happening... This can't be happening... The words beat through his brain cells on repeat mode while the nurses turned machines back on and checked Lisa's vital signs. He heard Cheryl call out "Code Blue!" and watched in disbelief as she began to administer CPR. The medical emergency in Lisa's room rang out over the public address system, bringing emergency staff hustling in with a crash cart.
"You'll have to leave," another nurse said, taking hold of Jack's arm. "Give them space. Let them work."
Jack allowed himself to be pulled out of the room, shock starting to overtake his senses as the adrenalin rush subsided.
Let her live, please! I can't... lose her... There was so much going on Jack lost track. Unidentifiable voices called out instructions.
"Charging!"
"Hands off!"
"C'mon, Lisa!"
Medications were administered. Machines whined and buzzed. Another stretcher arrived.
"Let's move!"
In a blur, the emergency team hustled Lisa's still form out of the room.
"Where-where are you taking her?" Jack called out to them. They paid him no heed and simply raced down the hallway towards a bank of elevators. He wanted so very badly to follow them, but Nurse Cheryl came to his side.
"She needs immediate surgery," Cheryl puffed, still catching her breath from her recent exertion. "Let them go."
"Surgery?!" he yelped, staring at her in stunned distress.
"She stopped breathing," Cheryl explained. "As a consequence, she went into cardiac arrest. We got her heart going again, but we think her lung re-collapsed. They're taking her to fix it."
"W-Will she be okay?"
"I don't know, Jack," Cheryl replied honestly, looking up at him with great sympathy. "I don't know how long she went without oxygen. There could be complications with her lungs. There could be irreversible brain damage. We just have to wait and see and let the doctors do their work."
Jack felt his gut clench and his fists tighten involuntarily, suddenly wishing there was something he could smash.
"Are you all right?" Cheryl asked, scrutinizing his face more intently now. "You were assaulted too, weren't you?"
"It's nothing," Jack muttered, rubbing his sore knuckles and working his jaw.
"Where did he hit you?" Cheryl asked in a tone that left no room for avoidance.
"Here, here, and here," Jack eventually admitted, indicating his abdomen, his jaw, and the side of his head.
"We should get you checked out."
"I don't want—" Jack protested, but she cut him off.
"Hey! You'll do your wife no favours if that guy gave you a concussion—or worse—a subdural hematoma when he hit you," Cheryl sternly pointed out. "Sit down here and don't move until I get a doctor. Understand?"
"Fine," Jack groused, recognizing the truth in her words. He sank into a chair, still unable to comprehend what had just happened.
That man tried to kill Lisa! If I hadn't forgotten my hat... if I hadn't come back... She would be... No, it was too awful to contemplate that tragic outcome. Even so, there was no telling if she would survive this second attempt on her life.
Overwhelmed, Jack put his head in his hands, feeling the tears come of their own volition.
***
Jack rebuttoned his shirt after having been checked over by a doctor fetched by Nurse Cheryl.
"Lungs sound clear," Dr. Kaminska said, pulling the stethoscope from her ears and pushing the vital signs monitor cart aside. "But your pulse is still rapid and your blood pressure is a tad high. I suppose that is to be expected after what you just went through. Do you take any regular medications, Mr. Bartlett?"
"Not really," he replied. "Only for angina. But I haven't had an attack in a long time."
"Do you have your nitroglycerin tablets with you now?"
Jack nodded.
"All right, I want you to take one right away if you start feeling any discomfort. Don't tough it out and don't delay."
"I won't," Jack said.
"Good. You're going to have some swelling and some ugly bruising for a little while after the punches you took, so please take it easy. If you start experiencing headaches, sudden increased pain or nausea and vomiting, I want you to come to Emergency immediately. All right?"
"All right. Thanks, Doc."
"You're welcome. I pray your wife pulls through," Dr. Kaminska said kindly. "What has happened here tonight is extremely outrageous and upsetting."
Jack merely nodded.
"Hospital security and the police will want to talk to you now," she added. "I told them no one was to disturb you until I had checked you over to make sure you were okay."
"All right," Jack said. "Send them in."

Parker Residence, Hudson
"Chief, there's just been another attempt on Lisa Stillman's life."
James Parker's eyebrows shot to the ceiling as this piece of news registered. "What?! Kavanaugh, what the hell happened?"
"Calgary's people were over at the hospital investigating. They're saying security video recording shows a guy dressed in scrubs getting off the elevator on the floor of her recovery room," Kavanaugh said. "Coincidentally, Jack Bartlett was just getting on the same elevator. Anyway, the scumbag's head and face were covered with a surgical cap and mask, so we have no facial details. He just breezed right into her room and no one batted an eye because of course he didn't look out of place. The only reason Stillman is even alive is because Bartlett back-tracked to retrieve his forgotten hat. Walked in and found the bastard trying to suffocate her with a pillow."
"Low-tech, but effective," Parker muttered in distaste, already making a move to get down to headquarters.
"Yeah. They got into an altercation. Bartlett says he grabbed the guy and got in a few good punches, but he took a few of his own. Security personnel were too late to nab him; he's still on the loose, but they think he fled on a motorbike."
"They 'think'?!"
"Hospital security cams around the time of the attack show the man dressed in the scrubs taking off on foot out of a south stairwell fire exit. He sprinted off through the parking lot and out onto Front Street. The next time they pick him up visually, it's on the traffic cams, and he's on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, they lost him once he was outside Calgary city limits, heading south. He must have turned off some country road somewhere and continued on to who knows where."
"Be impossible to track now," Parker lamented.
"They've issued a Canada-wide APB," Kavanaugh said. "We could get lucky."
"Yeah, right," Parker said, thinking how impossible it would be to find that particular needle in a haystack. "Is Stillman going to make it?"
"Last word is she was in surgery again," Kavanaugh said. "Her left lung re-collapsed in the attack. Time will tell if she'll pull through. If she does, I think we need to seriously look into some protection options."
"Agreed. Call the team back in and arrange a video conference with Calgary PD. Send them everything we have on the Stillman case so far, particularly the list of those investors. I'm on my way; we need to get to the bottom of this."
"Affirmative. See you soon."

Hudson Police Headquarters — 1:00 a.m.
"So, we're back to the targeted attack theory, then?" Kavanaugh asked.
"It would seem so," Parker replied. "And whoever it is, he's clearly not going to stop until she's dead."
"You know, I never liked Bartlett as our prime suspect, anyway," Patterson stated.
"Me, either, despite what he'd stand to gain with her out of the way," Kavanaugh remarked.
"The whole thing stinks, but not from the family," Parker declared. "I'm thinking it's got to be connected to this investors' group or her business life, and we need to find that connection before it's too late."
"The problem is we're not really turning up anything that would suggest a problem in her business life," Kavanaugh said.
"CRA audited her last tax season, though," another detective named Brian Benoit supplied.
"Yeah? They find anything fishy?" asked Parker.
"Nope. The only thing she was 'guilty' of was trying to sell a foreign property while trying to keep her business afloat here in Canada," Benoit said. "When the plan to sell the place fell through, she tried renting it. There were some seeming irregularities in her reporting of those rental revenues, but it was all sorted out."
"Yes, Jack Bartlett did mention that 'financial trouble' when I told him Lisa had been shot..." Parker said. "Time to talk to her staff and any business associates you can dig up, past and present. We need answers, and we need them fast."
"All right. We'll head to Fairfield Stables first thing in the morning to speak with her staff," Kavanaugh said.
"Good," Parker said.
Just then, the video call from the Calgary police went live, and Detective James Prescott's face popped up on the screen on the conference room wall.
"Thanks for taking the time out to chat with us, Detective Prescott," Chief Parker greeted the other man. "Any updates on the attack on Stillman?"
"Nothing past what we already know," Prescott said. "No hits on the APB, unfortunately."
"Anything shake out on your end with the list of the members of the investors' group we sent you?"
"As a matter of fact, yes," Prescott replied. "One of the names you gave us, 'Tanner Gunn'—we interviewed Gunn a year ago when the Barick murders took place. Lanny Barick and Tanner Gunn had some joint business interests at the time not related to their investors' group. Nothing raised any flags back then, but with the Stanton death and now these attempts on Stillman, we took a second look."
"Go on," Parker asked.
"We know Gunn was able to collect on an insurance policy when Barick died," Prescott said. "Now, before you get all excited, Gunn did have a valid reason for having that policy. The two of them had that shared business venture and had reciprocal life insurance policies. It's not unusual for this sort of thing to be in place so that if one of the business partners dies, the loss isn't so severe for the surviving partner."
"Right, 'insurable interest'," Parker said with a nod.
"Exactly. If Gunn had died first, Barick would have collected."
"Yeah, nothing really illegal about that, on the surface," Parker said.
"Right, but I'm waiting to hear back from one of my C.I.s who might have something that could be useful," Prescott said. "See, we had insufficient cause to dig deeper into Gunn's affairs a year ago, but now that all this has happened, we're digging deeper. And from what we're uncovering, it looks like he's been involving himself in some shady stuff."
Parker seized on this point. "How 'shady' are we talking?"
"We found out Gunn has been banned from every reputable casino in Western Canada," Prescott said, "and my informant thinks he's been frequenting some illegal gambling places in Calgary, Edmonton, and points in between."
"So Gunn has a gambling problem," Parker said. "Does he have a debt problem, too?"
"That's what we're trying to find out," Prescott answered. "There's some loan sharks a couple of my undercover guys are hoping to talk to."
"All right, keep us in the loop," Chief Parker said. "And thanks for doing the legwork on this angle."
"You're welcome," Det. Prescott said. "This hospital attack is our investigation, after all. We're of course very concerned about Ms. Stillman's safety."
"As are we. You think this guy is going to try again, don't you?" Parker asked.
"Undoubtedly," Prescott replied. "Whoever it was went to great lengths to stay concealed. This was no random attack."
"So what's your plan?" asked Parker.
"Given the seriousness of the situation, we believe desperate times call for desperate measures. I have a hunch about what's going on, so I'm recommending to my chief we place an immediate protection detail on Stillman if she pulls through tonight."
Parker nodded. "I was thinking the same," he said. "I only hope it will be enough. Now tell me more about this hunch of yours."

South Calgary Health Campus
"Tim, I need you to get up here to the hospital as soon as you can."
The sound of his ex-father-in-law's voice in his ear at this hour was not a pleasant one for Tim. "What? Why? What time is it?"
"Late!" Jack snapped.
"What's the matter?" Tim asked, Jack's tone making him change his line of questioning as concern for Lisa's well-being now replaced his irritation at being awakened. "I thought you'd be back home by now. Is Lisa okay?"
"Someone just tried to kill her, so no, she's not okay!"
"What?!" Tim exclaimed in disbelief. "Did you say someone just tried to kill her? Again?"
"Just get your butt down here, would you?" Jack implored. "I'll explain everything."
"Fine," Tim ground out. "All right. I can be there in about 45 minutes. You're lucky it's night so I'm not going to get stuck in traffic."
"Quit yapping and get moving!"
"All right! Hold your horses, I'm moving. Geez."

The news that Lisa had been attacked in her room meant the family at Heartland was on a razor's edge of anxiety. They all wanted to race out to the hospital in Calgary; Jack insisted it was enough for Tim to be there for the time being. After all, with visiting hours over for the night, they would not all be welcome to loiter in the hospital hallways.
While Lyndy slept in Katie's room, Lou, Amy, Ty, and Georgie decided to keep vigil together in the living room, silently waiting for any word, but it was an uneasy silence that gripped them. For that reason, everyone was startled when Ty's cell phone buzzed around 5:00 a.m.
Ty recovered quickly and looked at the screen. TIM. "It's your dad," he said to Amy and Lou.
"Hello, Tim?" he answered, rising from the couch as he did so. He listened carefully to the message being relayed by his father-in-law, making every effort not to let his emotions overtake him.
Three pairs of eyes remained fixed on Ty, each set trying to glean something—anything from his posture or his face that would tell them what was being discussed; anything that would tell them if they should prepare for the worst, or if they should be relieved.
"Thanks, Tim," Ty eventually said. "I'll tell them." He swallowed slowly and ended the call, slipping the phone into his pocket.
"What's going on?" Georgie asked with trepidation, unable to contain herself any longer.
Ty paused for a moment before responding, able only to speak a few words at first. "Tim says..."
"What?" Amy asked, eyes wide.
Ty blinked furiously. He felt his throat constrict, but knew he had to speak the news Tim relayed.
Georgie looked to be on the verge of tears. "Ty?" she whispered.
Somehow, Ty managed to get his mouth to sound out two more words:
"Lisa's gone."
With a cry, the teen fled up the stairs to her room. Lou was torn between wanting to comfort her daughter and dealing with her own emotions at this disastrous news.
"No," Amy whispered, feeling hot tears springing up beneath her eyelids. She leaned into Ty and he brought his lips to the side of her head, giving her a gentle kiss while wrapping his arm around her shoulder. No one said anything for several beats.
Lou finally broke the stifling, uncomfortable silence. "I should go up there," she said dully, staring up towards the loft. "I just have no idea what to say to her right now."
Lou tapped gently on Georgie's bedroom door. She could hear quiet sniffles coming from her eldest daughter, and her heart plummeted. Georgie always experienced emotions very deeply, usually expressing them openly and unabashedly.
"Georgie, honey, can I come in?" Lou softly called.
A muffled sigh and hiccup was the only response.
"I'm coming in," Lou said, ignoring the lack of verbal answer.
Georgie was sitting on her bed, legs drawn up, face buried in her arms.
"I'm a really horrible person!" Georgie exclaimed, raising her head to look at her mother.
"What? Why do you say that?" Lou asked, completely thrown by this unexpected outburst. "Georgie, what are you talking about?"
She came and sat next to Georgie, draping her right arm around the teen's trembling shoulders.
Georgie's tearstained eyes met Lou's. "When I first got here... when Clint let Jack be my temporary guardian... I..."
More tears flooded Georgie's eyes, as if she were recalling a particularly bitter memory.
"You what, Georgie? It can't be that bad," Lou said encouragingly.
Her words came tumbling out. "But it is, Lou! I said really terrible things to Lisa when she came to see Jack. All I knew was she was Jack's girlfriend, and I was mad because I thought she was going to make him spend less time with me, and I thought she was this rich, snobby, stuck-up lady. I was horrible to her, and I never told her I was sorry. I never got to take it back, and now..."
"Oh, Georgie..." Lou murmured. "Sweetheart, you have to know Lisa would have never held that against you. I've said horrible things to her, too."
"You have?" Georgie asked, in spite of herself.
"Oh, yes," Lou admitted with a sigh. "And if there's anything I can tell you about Lisa, it's that she was always quick to forgive... and she was usually the first to apologize. If she was ever upset at you for whatever it was you said, I'm sure she forgot about it a long time ago. She loved you, Georgie. She loved all of us. As if we were her own."
Speaking those words now, Lou felt a sudden void she had not experienced since hearing about Marion's death. It's like losing Mom all over again, she thought. Why did I never truly notice how much a part of this family's life Lisa became? Now she's gone...
Lou held her daughter even closer to her.

Fairfield Stables
"No!"
"Mr. Wilkes, I know this news comes as a shock," Det. Kavanaugh said as calmly as possible to Harry after his emotional reaction when told about Lisa. "I'm so sorry. You and the staff here at Fairfield have the sympathies of the entire Hudson police department."
Head groomsman and almost lifelong Fairfield employee Harry Wilkes raised his head from his hands. "How is this possible? I-I thought she was okay! I thought she was recovering after what happened! Now you're telling me someone got to her right in her hospital room last night?! How?!"
"That's what we're trying to find out," Patterson said in a soothing voice. "That's why we're here. It's vital we find out as much as we can about her life here at Fairfield as soon as possible. You can help us with that. Do you think you can answer some questions?"
Harry tried to compose himself even as tears spilled down his cheeks. "I'm sorry, I need a moment. Wait a minute, how is Jack? Is Jack okay? Does her sister—does Rachel know what's happened?"
"Mr. Bartlett is as well as can be expected, Mr. Wilkes," Patterson said gently. "I'm sure Ms. Stillman's sister has been notified."
Harry nodded and impatiently brushed aside the tears. "Sorry," he said again after blowing his nose. "This is so shocking and upsetting. I'm not sure how much help I can be, but of course I'll answer your questions. Anything to help you nail the bastard who did this."
"Thank you, Mr. Wilkes. We understand you worked for Matthew Stillman for many years before he passed," Kavanaugh began. "Then his daughter inherits Fairfield and steps in and makes massive changes to how things had been operating. Off the record: how was Lisa Stillman as a boss?"
Harry's eyes misted again, his gut clenching as he heard Kavanaugh use the past tense when referring to the woman he had watched grow up.
"Lisa... Lisa was a great boss," Harry gulped, swamped with emotion. "Not just to me; to all of us. Case in point: When she was going through a rough financial patch during the economic downturn a couple years back, she did everything she could not to lay off any of the staff, even though that's what her accountant recommended. I've known her since she was a wee little kid. She might have paid my salary, but Lisa was also a good friend. Everyone who worked for her would say the same thing. She could be demanding—it's a demanding business—but she was also fair."
Kavanaugh fired off a volley, calculated to catch Harry off-guard: "You said 'everyone who worked for her'. What about that jockey Lisa sacked about eight years ago?"
Harry fielded the question easily. "Who, Liam Comox?" A slight sneer crossed his face as he remembered the arrogant young man. "Never liked the guy, but Lisa saw potential in him. If there's anything she was guilty of, it would be that she was too generous with how many chances she gave someone; how much stock she put in them to be a better person. Anyway, last I heard, Comox went out East... Somewhere in Halifax or something like that. As much as I disliked him, I really don't think he had anything to do with this."
"And what about that manager—Laura Monson—who resigned last year under a cloud of controversy?" asked Patterson.
"Lisa wasn't even in the country when all that business with Shooting Star occurred," Harry said dismissively. "And Laura's decision to resign from Fairfield was her own."
"All right, level with us, Mr. Wilkes: did Lisa have any enemies in her business dealings? Disgruntled clients?" asked Kavanaugh.
"'Enemies'? 'Disgruntled clients'?" Harry echoed as he frowned, the furrows in his brow creasing deeply. "Not really. Fairfield is well-respected all over the world. Sure there have been clients who weren't happy with every single horse they ever bought from Lisa. But that's the nature of the business. Horses can come up lame. Winning potential isn't always fully realised. Like I said: Everyone loved Lisa. Well, that is to say... almost everyone..."
Kavanaugh looked at him sharply at this admission. "Explain."
Harry did not answer for a few beats, fumbling to find the right way to phrase the unsettling thoughts flitting through his mind. "Okay, it's not something we like to talk about," he began slowly, "but there are a lot of people out there who want to see horse racing go away. Permanently. They point to horse fatalities on the racetrack as reason enough to shut down the sport entirely. Fairfield has not been immune to that kind of criticism."
"And that 'criticism' you're talking about—anybody in particular been more than just a critic?" Kavanaugh queried.
There was a short pause while Harry considered the question carefully. "There was an animal rights group a while back," he eventually muttered, voice dripping with contempt. "Lisa got some nasty emails when one of her horses died in an accident on the racetrack. But it was an accident, pure and simple—not due to animal cruelty or mistreatment—not that any of it mattered to that particular group."
"Did Lisa report these 'nasty emails' to the police?" asked Patterson.
Harry frowned slightly. "I'm not sure. Maybe. She really didn't let that sort of thing get under her skin. Lisa loved those animals and she made sure they got the best care when they were at Fairfield. I just can't believe what's happened. Lisa didn't deserve this. I thank God her father isn't around anymore, because this would have killed him. I don't know what we're going to do... Lisa... you poor kid..."
"Mr. Wilkes, once again, you have our sympathies," Patterson said. "Thank you for answering our questions. I know this news has been very difficult for you."
Harry blew his nose again and nodded. "You're welcome. Is there anything else I can do?"
"Just a few more questions, if that's okay," Kavanaugh said.
"All right," Harry said, resigned to the fact the cops were still not finished. "Go on."
"Can you share with us what you thought about Lisa's marriage to Jack Bartlett? A man several years older, and significantly less wealthy than she was?"
"Wait, you think Jack had anything to do with this?" he exclaimed. "That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. From the times I've been able to meet him, he was nothing but devoted to Lisa. And compared to her ex-husband Dan, Jack is head and shoulders above. Lisa was never happier than when she got married to Jack. You're barking up the wrong tree, detectives. There's no way Jack Bartlett would hurt Lisa!"
Kavanaugh and Patterson exchanged a look. If there had been any lingering doubts as to Jack Bartlett's innocence, Harry had put them to rest.
"Is that all, now?" Harry asked, willing himself to calm down.
"That about covers our questions, Mr. Wilkes, but the last thing we need from you is access to all of Lisa Stillman's office files, computers and laptops, everything."
"I assume you came with a warrant?" he asked.
Kavanaugh showed Harry the document.
"Thanks," he said after looking at the judge's signed request. "Come with me. You take whatever you need if you think it will help catch the monster who did this."
"Chief, we've picked up Stillman's office PC and her work laptop along with a bunch of office files and correspondence," Kavanaugh said after dialing his boss' cell before driving off from Fairfield.
"Excellent. We'll get Benoit and the computer forensics team to go over Stillman's digital files and emails," Parker said. "See if they can come up with anything."
"We may already have a lead on that," Kavanaugh said. "Harry Wilkes says that 'Animals Have Rights Too' group had been sending Stillman some nasty messages, criticizing the horseracing industry."
"Oh, really," Parker said. "Looks like we need to find out if that animal rights group has been doing more than just sending 'nasty' messages critical of horse racing."
"You think they'd resort to murder to save the lives of a few horses?" Kavanaugh asked as he paused before buckling his seatbelt.
"I think people will resort to whatever means necessary if they think their cause is justified."

Shooting Victim Succumbs to Injuries After Brazen Second Attack
May 4, 2019
The Hudson Times—Online Version
Nadir Jutley
The motorist critically injured in a shooting on Range Road 292 has died. Calgary homicide detectives are actively investigating after the case took a dramatic turn last night at the South Calgary Health Campus. The victim, identified as notable Hudson resident Lisa Stillman, had initially undergone life-saving surgery, but was attacked in her hospital room by an unknown assailant. Attempts to revive Stillman by hospital staff were unsuccessful.
Police believe the killer managed to obtain a hospital ID access badge and entered the unit dressed as a medical professional. He escaped before hospital security personnel could apprehend him. Traffic cameras in the area appear to show the same man fleeing on a motorcycle. A Canada-wide APB has been issued.
Hospital administrators were not at liberty to comment on the incident due to the on-going nature of the investigation, but wish to assure the public that there is no current risk to patient safety.
Lisa Stillman was a well-known member of the local and international horse racing community. She was the owner and operator of Fairfield Stables, a thoroughbred breeding facility established by her late father, Matthew Stillman, in 1951.
She is survived by her husband, Foothills Rodeo Hall of Fame inductee Jackson Bartlett, one sister Rachel Stillman, nephew Benjamin Stillman, as well as numerous step-grand, and great-grandchildren.
Calgary Police are asking anyone with information to contact them immediately.

It did not take long for Parker's team to uncover unsettling messages while combing through Lisa's email account.
"Look at this one, Chief," said Det. Benoit. "This must be the group Wilkes was talking about: a group calling themselves 'AHRT'.
"Yes, that's that group. I've heard of them before," said Parker.
"Yeah?" Benoit said, turning to look at his boss.
"They're small, but they have chapters all over the country, including one here in Alberta. Stands for 'Animals Have Rights Too'. They've had a few protests here and there; mostly at the racetracks and especially at the Calgary Stampede. A couple of their members once got into an altercation with some chuckwagon fans. But anyway, what does the email say?"
"See for yourself," Benoit said, swiveling the monitor around for Parker to read.
Re: STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY NOW!
Lisa Stillman: someone should make you run around in circles until you drop dead. or until you break both your legs and they have to put you down. wouldn't that be sporting? we would pay to see them euthanize you and everyone else like you in the horse-killing business. you're all sick and what you do to horses is loathsome. you know what you are doing is wrong. you breed these animals to such extremes that it is no longer natural. you force them to race when you know their legs cannot tolerate the stress. they die painful and unnecessary deaths. and it's all your fault. we're warning you: leave the horses alone. stop the barbaric practice of horse breeding for racing, or face the consequences!
-AHRT
"What do you think? Sounds like a threat to me," Benoit said.
"But nothing specific, aside from that vague 'or face the consequences' bit," sighed Parker. "I wish Stillman had reported this when she received it."
"Hey, you guys, you'll want to see this!" Kavanaugh called out to the team. "This is the latest entry from the AHRT Blog. As in they just posted it. It's pretty chilling."
ANIMALS HAVE RIGHTS TOO
A Blog
Date: May 4, 2019
Someone's Offing Rich Horsey People. We Ain't Even Mad.
Don't get us wrong. Of course it's not cool when some gun-crazy lunatic goes on a killing spree. But when his victims happen to be the very people who contribute the most to the unchecked cruelty towards horses? Well, let's just say we're not shedding any tears.
The first was Valerie Stanton, owner of Briar Ridge Stables in Hudson in the province of Alberta, Canada. Now she was a piece of work. Rumor has it she once sold her own daughter's prize jumper to slaughter. He barely avoided the meat truck, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Former Briar Ridge Stables staff and trainers report Stanton was abusive and would flip out over the slightest problems and mistakes. She was known to use whips on horses that did not clear jumps. Anyway, she won't be using whips any longer because some generous soul put Stanton out of her misery with a well-placed bullet.
The latest offender to take a much-deserved dirt-nap is Lisa Stillman, owner of Fairfield Stables, also of Hudson, Alberta. You'll remember this particular piece of horse-murdering scum. It was her horse Pioneer that had to be put down at Century Downs a few years ago. These bloggers personally warned Stillman numerous times about the dangers of breeding thoroughbreds to the point that their legs are so spindly they can't run a quarter-mile without breaking a foreleg. She of course completely ignored everything sent her way, choosing instead to risk the lives of innocent animals, all for the allure of a big prize purse and fame. Stillman won't be chasing after blood money ever again after a couple bullets flew her way. We're pretty sure one went straight through her cold, dark heart, and the other went through her thick skull. (At least something finally did!)
Oh, in case you needed any more proof of Stillman's proclivities and the kind of company she kept, here's an undated picture of her at Santa Anita with Riley and Elspeth Penfield. The Penfields are another couple of royal snobs who fancy themselves horse racing experts. Yeah, so expert that every race horse they've ever owned came in nearly dead last, and as a consequence ended up dead in the glue factory.
You're all of course familiar with Santa Anita, where it's "abandon all hope, ye who enter here"—if you happen to have four legs, a tail and a mane, that is. Over a dozen horses have met grisly deaths at Santa Anita within the past 10 years. They should switch around the order of a few letters in "S-a-n-t-a" and get a much more appropriate name for the place, if you get the drift.
Anyhow, we salute you, whoever you are, for making this world a safer place for equines everywhere; at least those in Hudson. You deserve an award for your service.
-AHRT Staff
"Disgusting," Patterson said with a shake of her head.
"What I wanna know is how these 'AHRT Staff' writers knew those details about Stillman's shooting," Benoit observed. "We made sure the media never specified."
"Could be a lucky guess, or even a little creative wishful thinking on their part, but you're right," Parker said. "It's a little too much of a coincidence Stillman was shot in the left side and the head. I want to talk to these people, Benoit. Get me some names and addresses. I have so many questions for them."
"Okay, we have some of these AHRT people in the system already," Benoit said after a few keystrokes returned the desired results. "Mostly public mischief stuff and some restraining orders. One, in fact, issued by Valerie Stanton a few years ago, like her son said."
"Names, please, Benoit."
"Coming up, sir," Benoit said. "We've got a Margot Gwyneth Carpenter of Red Deer, Alberta; Layton Luther Moffett of Calgary—"
"Layton Moffett?" Patterson repeated, looking at the picture of the man in question as Benoit flashed it on the TV screen. "Chief, he was on the scene at Lisa Stillman's shooting."
Parker glared back at her. "Are you certain?"
"One hundred percent, sir," she asserted. "He stopped his little orange Smart car along with some of the rubbernecking drivers that afternoon. The difference was he actually got out. Didn't get in the way, but was asking questions of anyone who would give him the time of day."
"Then it's possible he could have seen her injuries from where he was," Benoit said.
"Possibly," Patterson replied slowly. "It would explain how the AHRT staffers knew where and how many times Stillman was shot so they could write it up for the blog entry."
"I still don't like it," Parker grumbled. "Let's bring Moffett in for a bit of questioning; find out exactly what he was doing out here and how much he knows about what happened."

Layton Luther Moffett appeared wary and alert when Chief Parker sat down with Detective Kavanaugh to question him two hours later.
After reminding the young man he was merely being questioned and that he was free to go at any time, Parker began to drill him.
"Do you recognize the name 'Lisa Stillman'?"
"Sure do," Layton said with a bob of his head, almost cracking a smile. "Heard she just died. Heard someone shot her and then someone attacked her in her hospital room. Guess someone really wanted her dead, eh? What is this world coming to?"
"What were you doing out on Range Road 292 on the afternoon of May 2nd?"
"I was out for a country drive," Layton said airily.
"No crime against that, of course," Parker said.
"Nope," Layton said. "You're going to ask me why I stopped on that drive, aren't you?"
"As a matter of fact, we are," Parker said. "Why did you stop?"
"Because there was a car accident," Layton said. "I know First Aid. I thought I could be of assistance. But the paramedics were there already, so it was all good. I mean, all good then. Obviously it wasn't 'all good' for Lisa Stillman once she got to the hospital."
Both Parker and Kavanaugh took note of his almost blasé attitude. He seemed almost pleased to talk about what he knew of Lisa's fate as a small smirk tugged at his lips.
"You live in the northwestern quadrant of the city of Calgary," Parker said, returning to Layton's reasons for lurking around Hudson. "Do you often take drives out to Hudson?"
"When the mood strikes me," Layton said with an air of indifference, peering at his fingernails.
"What do you know about a horse by the name of 'Herring'?" Parker asked.
Layton's glance shifted from his hands to Parker's face. "I heard Lisa Stillman was the owner," the young man finally answered after a few beats. "I heard he was hurt by a bear after..."
"After what?" Parker prompted.
Layton swallowed. "After that Valerie Stanton woman from Briar Ridge was shot dead."
"And what can you tell us about that, Mr. Moffett?" Kavanaugh asked.
"Only what I saw in the news," Layton replied, though the officers could see he was growing more nervous.
"Funny that," Parker said. "The name of the horse was never made public. Care to change your answer?"
Layton appeared instantly uncomfortable. "Okay, look," he said, squirming slightly. "Our staff occasionally pose as potential buyers for horses we think are at risk for abuse or the meat truck. Herring was one of those horses."
"Let's say for a moment we believe you," Parker said, humouring the man, "how did you find out it was Herring that was injured?"
"We just put two and two together," Layton replied. "I called the Fairfield office a few weeks ago saying I was interested in buying him. Look, the Fairfield website lists all its available stock for everyone to see. It's not a crime to look at horses on websites, is it?"
"No, it's not," Parker conceded. "Now get to the part where you know it was Herring!"
"I called Fairfield again yesterday," Layton said. "I said I had not forgotten about Herring and hoped Fairfield had enough safety precautions in place to prevent bear attacks from happening like the one I'd read about."
"So you were just fishing for information," Kavanaugh said.
"Yeah," Layton admitted. "And the man I spoke to told me all the horses at Fairfield were safe, but that unfortunately they could not control what happened to horses off-site, and that Herring had indeed been hurt. He was all apologetic, like I'd be upset I couldn't buy the horse right away and they'd lose out on a sale. It's always money with those people."
Parker and Kavanaugh exchanged a look. The story seemed plausible.
"Look, if no one there is concerned about that horse past what profits it can make them—"
"Enough with your posturing, Mr. Moffett," Parker snapped in annoyance. "We're not done questioning you."
Layton crossed his arms in sullen defiance. "What else, then?"
"We know Valerie Stanton had issued a restraining order against you and the other members of the 'Animals Have Rights Too' Alberta chapter. If we find out you've been in violation of that—"
"She's dead now, so why should it matter?" Layton smarmily interrupted. "But even when she was alive, I didn't pass within 100 yards of Stanton, or her horses, or her property after that bogus order was placed. I'm a law-abiding citizen who exercises his right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression. People like Valerie Stanton and Lisa Stillman get away with animal abuse all the time, and you people turn a blind eye. You waste your time threatening us with arrest when you ought to be investigating people like them for verifiable crimes against innocent animals."
"Are you done?" Parker asked, unmoved by Layton's impassioned speech.
"Yeah," Layton mumbled. "Can I go, now? I haven't done anything wrong, and I certainly didn't shoot Valerie Stanton or Lisa Stillman, if that's what you're really wondering. I don't even own a firearm."
"We already knew that," Kavanaugh said, "but thanks for saying so."
"One last question, Mr. Moffett," Parker said.
"What?"
"You were driving into Hudson when Lisa Stillman was shot," Parker said. "Do you recall passing someone on a motorbike heading in the opposite direction?"
"Maybe," Layton said.
"Yes or no, Moffett!" Parker barked.
"Look, I read the papers," Layton eventually said. "I know you were looking for a guy on a motorcycle as a 'person of interest' in the shooting, or whatever. And you know what? Yeah, I did see a guy on a motorcycle when I was driving in to Hudson that day. But that's all I'm going to tell you, because quite frankly, whoever that guy is? He's a hero for trying to take out Stillman. He deserves an award."
"Kavanaugh, get him out of my sight," Parker growled in disgust. "I don't want to see you in Hudson ever again, Mr. Moffett, do I make myself clear? Now get out of here!"

You’re Important (The 8)
Title: You’re important
Paring: Reader x The 8 (SEVENTEEN)
Genre: Fluff. Some Angst
Word count: 1098
Writer: Kpopmadness (Ju)
A/N: Warning: Mentions of bullying and being ignored/abused by parents and workmates.
Xu Minghao rolled his shoulders back as he finished the work in front of him. He closed his laptop down and shut it before rubbing his tired eyes, his head pounding against his skull. He leaned his head back against his chair as he let his muscles relax one by one.
Slowly, he stood from his desk and picked up his belongs and got ready to leave. Closing his office door behind him softly. As he made his way to the front door he noticed that the high quality restaurant his father had handed down to him, had been swept clean for the night. The chairs put away, the table cloths stripped off the tables, the floor mopped clean and the windows shined.
A small clatter could be heard from the kitchen, peeking Minghao's interest. As he approached the kitchens door he felt his chest tighten seeing the slender frame hunched over the large pile of dishes. She worked alone, everyone having gone home for the night. Leaving clean up to her.
"You're still here?" He stated softly.
She jumped at little at his voice, making her whirl around to face him.
"I'm sorry." He apologises quickly, stepping into the kitchen a little further. "I was just surprised someone was still here. It is after midnight after all."
She gave him a small smile, making his chest tighten even more. "Thank you, Minghao. You're sweet. But someone has to finish this before we open back up tomorrow morning." She said as she turned back around to finish washing the pile of dishes.
Minghao observed her for a moment, watching her work without so much as a pause. Quickly making up his mind, he set down his things on a nearby counter and took off his suit coat.
"What are you doing?" She asked, her eyes wide as he stepped closer to her.
"Helping you. Its not good for your health to do all this by yourself."
She stated at him as he made his way to the sink and plunged his hands into the warm soapy water, washing a dirty plate quickly before rinsing it off.
“You don’t have to do this.” She said quietly.
Which was true. He was her boss. He called the shots around here. He wrote them their paychecks and hired them. So there was no reason why he should help an employee.
Minghao met her eyes, strands of his dark hair falling into his eyes as he did so. “I know I don’t have to. But things get done faster if we work together.”
She nodded her head, deciding not to say anymore and simply grab a towel to dry off the dishes he had washed clean.
Minghao breathed a sigh of relief, however, that she didn’t read into his intentions on staying to help her.
~~~
She had come into his restaurant soon after taking it over from his father. It was pouring rain outside. Her clothes soaked through and her hands trembling as she sat at his desk waiting for an answer.
This wasn’t the job he had wanted, or even dreamed of. He dreamed of traveling and seeing the world. But his father demanded differently from his son.
She wanted a job. So he gave it to her, a strange pull to this girl drawing him to her. Thing is, she always thought he didn’t notice her.
She was the one bullied in the group of staff members. She was often shoved or yelled at. Her quiet nature making her submissive and an easy target for others just trying to make themselves feel better about themselves.
Minghao noticed how she never drew attention to herself but always worked hard. But no one ever seemed to call or check up on her. And she never seemed to have plans with friends. Not that Minghao could talk. His fathers business kept him from having much of a social life. Let alone a love life.
Then in came her. Someone who he felt he connected with emotionally somehow. Even though he barely knew her. Even though she didn’t know it yet, she mattered to him.
~~~
3 weeks later:
It had been a few weeks since that night Minghao had helped her clean up the kitchen. And since then, he had made it a habit to stay late to help her clean up. Mostly just as an excuse to spend time with her.
It was another one of those nights as he stood by a counter lined with dishes as he dried off a bowl with a towel. The next words out of his mouth tumbled out before he could stop them.
“You don’t seem to have friends. Or family really.” Minghao felt his face go hot. Her eyes meeting his not helping his state.
“I...I’m sorry.” He stumbled, “That was too much.”
She let out a light laugh, “It’s okay, I don’t mind. You’re actually right.”
Minghao cocked his head to the side, patiently waiting for her to continue.
“My parents kicked me out of the house when I was 18. Told me I was old enough to be on my own.” She continued quietly. “Even in school I didn’t really make friend. I was just the brunt of pranks and abuse for most of it.”
“You work so hard though. You don’t deserve any of that.” Minghao blurted out. His cheeks turning hotter as his chest warmed. But he found himself really meaning those words.
She stared at him, her eyes misting over slightly. “It doesn’t matter, does it? I’m not important.”
Minghao felt his heart twinge in pain. Before he could think about his actions he stepped forward and took both her hands in his own. She froze beneath his touch but held his gaze.
“You’re important to me.” He whispered. Hoping his voice and eyes conveyed his feelings.
Her eyes widened in shock, her breath catching in her chest.
“Maybe that’s a bit fast.” He admitted. Rubbing her thumb with his own. “But you do matter to me. And I’ve always thought of you as beautiful.”
She stared at him, her jaw lax from shock. Then she started laughing. A large smile on her face as he stared down at her in confusion. She quickly wrapped her arms around his waist, holding him close to her before whispering,
“You’re important to me too, Minghao.”
Minghao smiled down at her as he wrapped his arms around her and held her close to him. The pieces they had been missing in their lives finally found, making them feel complete, seen, and understood.

OHSHC Rewrite: Episode 2
The Job of a High School Host!
Host Club x reader
Summary: Y/n learns the duties of a host.
Word Count: 4.9k
Episode Masterlist
You've been a host for almost two weeks now. It's been interesting, to say the least. Tamaki and the twins have been trying to get you into a dress since you put on the school uniform, but you cleaned the male uniform and refused all their demands.
Maria got letters from your friends back in y/c, to which she wanted to surprise you by putting them in your bag. You didn't notice them at school, and you didn't notice them when they were sticking out during homeroom.
But Hikaru and Kaoru did. Once the class was over, the three envelopes fell out of your backpack, though you kept walking. They looked at each other and nodded. Hikaru them and went on and they both went on with their day.
After doing your homework you rushed into the club room, only to see very real tropical decorations everywhere. The hosts had luau outfits on as well. "Welcome."
"This is different." You stated as you stepped in, looking around.
"Of course!" Tamaki posed as he talked. "It might be early fall but here at the Host Club we'd like our guests to feel as if they're in a tropical paradise. And plus, our heating system is... perfect!"
You gave him a slight look at his bragging, to which Kyoya smiled a bit. "Do you have a problem with the way we run our club y/n? Remember, you still owe us 8 million yen."
You set your bag down on your spot. "Charming." You said sarcastically, passing by him and giving him a sly smile. "I feel very free to speak my mind, really. So was this tropical island thing your idea?"
"All ideas dealing with the host club events come directly from the king. Although I will admit to casually slipping a Bali pamphlet onto his desk." He kept his smile as he continued writing in his book.
"Of course. Well someone should tell the king that he's really clever." You patted his arm before going and sitting down with your clients. "Good afternoon ladies—"
The twins each blew a whistle and marched over to you. "Hold it right there!" They said in unison. "Who's Julian?!"
You turned over to them, a bit surprised at the mentioning of that name. "What do you mean?"
"Three envelopes fell out of your bag, and one was from a boy named Julian." Kaoru said.
They then got very close to you, asking, "So who's Julian?!"
"An old friend." You shrugged, putting out your hand for the letters. They gave them back to you, but also gained the attention of Tamaki.
"How good of a friend is he?" He zoomed right behind your couch.
You didn't know why Tamaki was so territorial of his friends, but you knew there must be a reason. That didn't mean you couldn't still have fun with him. You fake sighed lovingly. "He's the best."
"Is he... handsome?"
"He has an adorable face. I love it so much!"
"You love it?" You gave you his puppy dog eyes.
"Yup."
"Do you have... feelings... for him?"
"Oh, I'm only totally in love with him."
"WHA~T?!" He then wrapped you in a hug. "But you're my little girl~"
You sighed again. "Yeah. It's too bad you're more his type."
"Huh?"
He blankly stared at you, and you bursted into a fit of giggles. "He's gay, so calm down."
"Oh." He then stood up and cleared his throat. "Well then, that's one less man to worry about. You don't know how many evil boys there are in the world, so you have to be careful."
"Yeah, I should also be careful of weird people who call themselves 'daddy'." An arrow struck through Tamaki as you walked over to the twins. "Thanks for holding onto these for me." Your smile made them blush. "And thank you for not opening them, since you guys are pretty nosey."
"We don't know what you're talking about." They both said as they shrugged.
"But y/n," Kaoru started saying.
"Why don't you open them for us?" Hikaru finished.
You scoffed. "Please guys, I'm working." You then turned to your clients as they sighed, smiling. "I'm sorry girls. What did you want to talk about?"
"Well, we were wondering if you were going to dress up in something tropical."
"Do you all want me to?" You asked, unsure if you wanted to go through with that.
"Yes!" They said happily.
Tamaki then appeared with a smile. "I already made you an outfit y/n. And look, we're a pair! Isn't it cute?"
You frowned. "You know I don't really like skirts."
He then showed you his big watery eyes. "But Kyoya gave you a dress and you accepted it no problem."
"He was doing it to be nice. You're doing this because you want to see me in a dress. That's weird."
He looked like he was going to burst from anger. He then pushed the outfit into your hands. "Just go change!"
You then changed into the shoulderless top with the long skirt, which also accompanied a lot of jewelry. You then went out and tried to discreetly go back to your clients. "Oh my goodness y/n, you're so cute!" One exclaimed.
"Y/N~" Tamaki jumped over to you and crushed you into a hug. "Everybody, look!"
"Let's not please." You whispered. Your face went red as you frustratedly looked to the ground.
"Wow." The twins said, grabbing your arms.
"Who knew y/n," Kaoru said.
"Could be such a girl." Hikaru finished.
"Looks cute." They said, giving you a thumbs up.
"Please stop drawing in more attention." You said quietly.
"Takashi~ look!" Honey dragged you over to them. "Doesn't she look adorable?"
"Yeah."
Tamaki and the twins had evil stars in their eyes as they inched closer to you. You didn't notice the blush on Mori's face when you went to go hide behind him. The three then shouted, "Give her to us!"
Mori shook his head and took your shoulders, guiding you to your couch.
"Thank you senpai." You said quietly. You then put your hands over your face. You peaked at your smiling clients. "Okay, I did this for you guys."
"How do you feel in cosplay?"
"Exhausted!" You put your hands to your side quickly only to begin shaking your arms, hearing the jewelry jingle as you moved. They began to giggle at your innocent and child-like movements. "Jeez, what's with this?"
"Y/n, you forgot your crown!" Tamaki stuck it out towards you as an offering.
You took a deep breath and drank some tea, not looking at him. "If it's worth more than me I'm not wearing it."
He gave you an angrily confused look. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I'm not putting something ridiculous and way too expensive on my head. I don't even feel comfortable in this. It feels like I'm lowering the value of it by just wearing it." Your tone was a sarcastic one, which caused smiles from around your area. Though it was a joke, you were only half-kidding.
"Excuse me." A girl came up to you and said. "I believe we're supposed to be switching hosts now."
"Oh, you must be my next appointment." You grinned, waving to her childishly even though she was right in front of you. "It's nice to meet you."
She then grabbed your chin and brought your face closer to hers. "I've just decided. You're going to be my new favorite host." This seemed to effect Tamaki.
Once the club finished everything, you walked over to go change until Kyoya stopped you. "Your words with Tamaki seemed to amuse some of the guests, and many of those guests have requested you."
"Cool. I guess my clownery is likable." You chuckled and nodded.
Clownery. What an odd made up word. He thought about what his clients told them about you. You spoke with slang, though it almost as if you didn't realize it. They said that they found it adorable. Your speech being adorable. It was an interesting thought, in its own way.
Once you put back on your uniform, Kyoya instructed you to make Tamaki some instant ramen. You did so and finished cleaning. Once you finished that you sat down and noticed that Tamaki was irritated.
"C'mon boss, quit eating that commoner's ramen and help plan the party." Kaoru said.
"What's up with him?" You asked.
"He's just upset with Lady Kanako choosing you." Kyoya said as he typed away on his laptop. "She's had the illness for a while now though, so I don't know why he's too surprised."
"What disease?"
"The host hopping disease." The twins said.
You giggled, grinning. "So he's jealous that I stole her from him."
"Shut up! I couldn't care less!" Tamaki yelled. "That's it, my patience has run out. It's time you started dressing like a girl!"
"That's really what's bothering you?"
"I just don't get it. How can you be so popular with the ladies when you yourself are a lady?!" He then went into his private chest, digging though it. "Now you listen to daddy. DADDY WANTS YOU TO GO BACK TO THE WAY YOU WERE AND KEEP WEARING SKIRTS!!"
He brought out a huge framed photo of you in a high and tight half pony tail, which contrasted your usually messy pony tail. You were wearing a cropped long sleeved dark gray shirt, with a black skirt and dark panty hose under.
"DON'T GO BLOWING UP MY PHOTOS WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST!!"
He hung it up on the wall and began crying. Everybody crowded around it.
"The more I look at this photo the more amazed I am." Kaoru said. "How did you go from that to wearing suits?"
Everyone turned to look at you. "I used to have a neighbor who owned a Burlesque lounge. Sometimes she needed someone to cover a waitress shift, and I would do it. This was the most covered up she would allow me to be though."
"I see." Kyoya said. "Those places are known for having women reveal a large amount of skin."
"I wore that stuff cause I had to. I feel more comfortable not showing my legs. I don't care if I dress like a dude sometimes."
"A GIRL SHOULD NEVER ADDRESS HERSELF AS A DUDE!!" Tamaki yelled. "MAMA~!! Y/n's using those dirty boy words again."
"I hate to break up this interesting conversation, but do you have any formal dancing experience?" Hikaru asked.
You turned and smiled nervously. "No, but I don't have to go to parties and stuff, right?"
Tamaki's eyes began to shine. "I absolutely forbid that. You must go to every event hosted by the host club if you want to pay back your debt! If you fail to do so, you'll be demoted back to errand boy" He then got a lot happier. "And that also means you have to wear a dress at the party!"
"No it's cool, I have a formal guy outfit." They all stared at you. "What? I got it when I had to go to a wedding."
"Why won't you wear something like thi~s?" Tamaki said with tears in his eyes.
"Cause it was for a job."
"This is a job!"
"No, this is indentured servitude. There's a difference. Slight, but it's there." You then briefly thought. "Oh, I guess that also means I have to learn the man's part since I'm a host."
Kanako was instructing you what to do, and you were getting the hang of it quickly. "You're quite a fast learner miss y/n."
"And you're quite an exceptional teacher Miss Kanako." Your gaze went to Tamaki, who looked sad. He wanted to teach you, but was too tall to be in the girl role. He glanced over to you, and you smiled and waved. He hesitantly gave you a small smile and waved back. Because of this you weren't paying attention tripped up the both of you. "I'm so sorry Lady Kanako!"
She pulled you closer. "That's quite alright."
"You're very forward." You smiled down at her before rolling to the side and pulling the both of you up. "C'mon, let's get you some tea."
You brought her tea as she happily held onto the cup. "You have a new order for tea sets I see. The handy work looks like it's Genorie."
"You have a keen eye mademoiselle." Kyoya said as he passed by.
"Such a pretty color." She gazed into the tea cup with a smile. "How lovely."
"Woah, you seem to know a lot about tea sets, huh?" You asked. This, unbeknownst to you, gained Tamaki's attention.
"What? Of course not!" She said shakily, blushing. "What ever would give you that idea?!"
Just then someone walked in with a box in hand. "You ordered a new tea set?" He asked Kyoya as he walked over to him.
"Yes we did. Y/n, come over and grab these." Kyoya said.
You nodded and smiled at him as he gave you the box. You opened the lid and looked at the set. "Wow, these are really nice. Are you an expert on things like this?"
Kanako began laughing. "Oh y/n, you're so out of the loop. It can be pardoned though." She turned back with a teasing smile. "After all, he doesn't look like an heir to a first class industry empire."
His facial expression changed as he looked at her. You noticed but decided not to say anything.
"The Susushima family has dealt mainly with table wear." Kyoya explained. "They are, in fact, a first class company."
"I think that's so awesome! You seem to have a lot of passion into what you're going to be doing, which is very admirable." You told him with a small smile.
He turned to you and bashfully smiled. "You think so? I'm honored. Well, see you all next time."
After he left and you walked back to Kanako with the box still in hand. "He's pretty handsome, don't you think?" You asked in your native language.
"Um, pardon?"
"Oh, sorry." You cleared your throat. "I'm asking if you think he's attractive."
She blushed profusely and nervously sipped on her tea. "I don't know! I suppose!"
"I get the feeling you two know each other."
She spat out her tea and began to panic again. "What would ever give you that silly conclusion? I have no idea what you're talking about! Anyways, take care!" She quickly left.
You stood up right before Honey jumped onto your back, almost knocking the box out of your hands. "Y/n-chan~! Guess what? They do know each other! Suzushima-chan is Kasuga-chan's fiance."
"Woah, really?"
"Kyoya," Tamaki said. "What do you know about this?"
He looked in his book. "They were childhood friends. Their parents set up an arranged marriage between them. I didn't find this information of any importance so I disregarded it."
"And what do you know of Suzushima?"
"Toro Suzushima. Outstanding grades, bare social status. Ordinary looking. He's reliable, in case of persuasion to place blame."
"He doesn't have much presence and is faint hearted." The twins said.
"In order words, he's boring." Kyoya closed his book.
"Wow," You said. "Who knew you guys were so cold to other men."
"We don't have any use of him so there's no reason to be nicer in describing him." Kyoya explained.
"Interesting philosophy." You said teasingly. "I can feel the kindness radiating off of you."
"Suzushima is a good boy." Honey said, on top of Mori. "Right?"
"Yeah." Mori replied.
"Alright men! It's time for a plan!" Tamaki announced. "It's our job at the Ouran Host Club to make every woman happy!"
When Tamaki finished explaining his plan, everybody packed up and left, leaving only Kyoya and you. He had just finished on his laptop and was packing up his things. You walked behind him. "Senpai, is it okay if I ask you a question?"
"Is it about what I said earlier?" He didn't turn around.
"Kind of. I mean, if we're talking about the same thing." You kept your voice steady and light.
"Was it what I said about not needing Suzushima?"
"Woah, no. Not at all. I was thinking about how you did a background check on him."
He paused briefly. "I see. What of it?"
Your voice unintentionally shrank. "Did you do one on me?"
"Yes. A few days ago, in fact. You fail to mention your brother when people ask about your history." His voice was so calm and normal. It made you feel very exposed.
"Everything I've said isn't a lie." You managed to say firmly.
"I know that as well. I understand your situation and I respect your reasonings for not talking about him. You've been through quite a lot, and you have a right to privacy."
"Please answer this next question honestly." His silence meant that he was still listening. "Do you think of me any lower or less, I don't know, appealing, now that you know everything about me?" You then nervously chuckled. "Unless it was already that low to begin with."
"I assure you that my views of you are of a hard working person who seems to make many people happy. Not wanting people to know certain things about you and having certain insecurities do not waver what I 'think' of you."
You let out a breath and grinned, hugging him from the back. He widened his eyes, but didn't tense nor pull away.
"Thank you Kyoya senpai. This really means a lot." You then let go of him. "Okay, I need to walk home before it gets dark. See you tomorrow." You then quickly went to the door. "Sorry if that hug was weird for you!" You called out as you left.
His opinions mattered to you. It was an interesting thought, in its own way.
As you were getting ready for the party, Maria came into your room. "Can't you be at least a bit girly?"
"Funny, that's really funny Maria." You turned to face her and sat down. "You're quite the tomboy yourself sometimes."
"I'm serious y/n/n. You should try a little makeup. You'll look nice for all your friends. One of them is bound to fall for you." She said in an offering tone.
You chuckled and shook your head. "They're all just friends. And I shouldn't have to try to impress anybody."
She sighed, going over to your nightstand and opening a drawer. She took out a black box and opened it, revealing the earrings you got back after your father was imprisoned. "At least wear one of your mom's earrings. They all look cute on you."
You looked in the box. She loved to collect them. "I don't know, maybe."
She grabbed your cheeks and smushed them. "Think about it." You grabbed her cheeks and did the same. "I also have something to tell you."
"Good or bad?"
She hesitated before quickly saying, "My sisters are coming for a few days to visit." And then sped walked out of the room.
"What?!" You followed her. "Please tell me Linda's son won't be coming too." She gave you a look, and that was all you needed to know. "Oh my gosh, I'm going to my club. That's gonna be my safe space for now."
"At least you have a safe space. I'll have to deal with Linda 24/7."
You then went back into your room and hesitantly grabbed a pair of earrings, putting them in your pants pocket. "I gotta go. I should start walking now."
She stopped you. "Take off the blazer at least." You took off the blazer with a pout. She then pulled off your messy ponytail. "Do something better with your hair too." You tied up two messy double buns. "There. You look adorable. Go."
You got there and joined all except Tamaki at the second floor in the auditorium. "Welcome, my little lambs," Tamaki said from the third floor. "To a magical night of your lives!"
Kyoya then spoke up. "As always ladies we are here for your enjoyment. Dance to your heart's content. The best dancer will be decided among us hosts and will be crowned queen. As a reward the queen will receive a passionate kiss on the cheek from our king, Tamaki Suoh. Good luck to all you."
They all began cheering, and you snickered over the stupidity of the 'prize'. The twins came over to you and began playing with your buns.
"These are cute." Hikaru said.
"You have a raggedy yet carefree look. The hairstyle compliments you." Kaoru told you. "Hey, have you ever been to a party before?"
"Not formal parties. Only block parties on my street."
"Well, since you're here y/n, you might as well enjoy yourself." Kyoya said. "We have quite the spread of desserts."
You then innocently asked, "Like squishy ice cream?"
"SQUI—"
"—SHY—"
"—ICE CREAM?!"
Tamaki flipped down to your floor and pointed to Kyoya, who was already dialing a number on his phone. "Kyoya! Order some squishy ice cream right away!"
"Two orders of mochi please." He said to his phone. The twins smothered you in a hug as your face burned from embarrassment. You felt like such an idiot foreigner right now.
In the meantime you danced with some girls, being flamboyant and silly when dancing with them. There was one girl who tripped over your shoes and almost fell until you caught her. She wouldn't stop laughing loudly, and it caused you to laugh as well. Others wanted to talk, so you danced regularly with them.
As you took a break from dancing with some girls Kanako approached you. "There you are y/n, I've been looking everywhere for you. May I have this next dance?"
"It would be my pleasure Lady Kanako." You began to dance with her. "You're so formal. It's really fascinating to me."
"Your expressions and slang are fascinating to me as well." She said.
"Kasuga-chan's here!" Honey announced.
"Honey, Mori," Tamaki said. "Commence with the operation."
Both nodded before swiftly grabbing you away and dashing to an empty room with the twins and Kyoya. "Did you guys really have to be so forceful?"
"Nevermind that, go and change." Hikaru shoved a bag into your hands and pushed you into the changing room.
"Remember y/n, we only have 37 minutes before the climax of the night," Kyoya said. "And a little accident might make the evening more interesting."
You saw a tube of concealer on the small table when you went in. You knew Kyoya left it for you, and it made you smile. You quickly changed into the dark purple dress and put concealer on the scars of your legs. You then remembered the earrings in your pocket and put them on. They were rose gold hoops with what looked like flower petals on them.
You then went outside, where the twins quickly put on your makeup. Kaoru then gently touched one of your earrings. "We didn't put these in the bag. Are these yours?"
"Yeah." You quietly said.
"They compliment the dress. It was good that you brought them." You smiled at him, causing him to blush and look away.
"Y'know," Hikaru said as they finished up. "I know the boss wants to stick to the strategy, but this is..."
"What are you all doing standing around here?" Tamaki asked as he came in. "The guests are wai—"
You stood up and faced him. You then began walking as the boys stared at you. "You look cute!" Honey stated.
Everyone blushed but Honey and Kyoya, who were both smiling. "My face feels heavy." You pouted as you kept walking.
"Hurry up!" The twins called out as you kept walking.
"Yeah, I got it." You muttered. As you left, the twins and Tamaki began to fawn over you.
You walked into the room they told you to. Suzushima turned around with a surprised look. You timidly smiled as you walked over to him. "You're not at all what I pictured from the letter you wrote me."
You kept your smile on. "Really?" He nodded. "Can I actually see the letter please?" He then gave it to you, and you read over it:
I'm in love love with you! From the first day I laid eyes on you I've been head over heals in love! Tee hee! All these feelings I have are harpooned to my heart as they keep whipping around my mind like the restless waves! When the special day comes, I want to randezvou with you on Noah's arc! I do I do!
You wondered who the hell would write such a stupid letter. It was actually a collaborative write with Kyoya and the twins. "Excuse me," Suzushima interrupted your thoughts. "Have we met before?"
"No! It's um, the first time we've ever talked!"
"I'm flattered by your letter, but I'm afraid I can't return your feelings." He said. "My heart has been taken by somebody else."
"My apologies! I didn't realize you had a girlfriend."
"No, she's not my girlfriend. I don't even think she's even interested anymore." He looked very sad.
"Well I don't know about that. Your calming presence is a joy to be around, and I'm sure she'd agree." You offered.
He sighed. "Thank you, but honestly, I'm sure she'd be better off with someone more self confident. That's why I'm leaving next month to study abroad. Hopefully become a better man for her. Maybe it's selfish, but I hope she'll wait for me."
"I won't lie to you, it's a little selfish." An arrow went through him. You squished your index finger and thumb. "Just a little. But Toro, if she really is the love of your life then I'm sure she'll still love you just as much as she probably already does."
He was about to say something as he reached out for you, but you heard the door open. You didn't turn so she wouldn't see your face. "Oh, I'm sorry to intrude." You could tell she was crying. "I'll just leave you two be."
You heard her heels and knew she was running away, and he ran after her. "Kanako, wait!"
You then walked next to Tamaki. "We didn't make things worse, did we?"
"He did run after her. He needs to learn how to be more sure of himself."
You were both walking back when you tripped again over your heels. Tamaki interlocked your arms together. You looked up at him. "You really need to learn how to walk in heels. They look so lovely on you, and it'd be a shame if you tripped and hurt yourself."
You smiled and nodded, leaning on his shoulder. You then tripped again, only for him to hold onto you and prevent you from falling. You giggled, followed shortly by Tamaki chuckling with you.
You both went over to the balcony. The lights hit, and you saw Kanako and Toro. "Let us join together and announce that this couple has been chosen for the final waltz of the night." Tamaki announced.
He said something to her, squeezing his eyes shut and asking her for a dance. You snickered. "Why are you laughing?" Kaoru asked.
"I know he's trying his best, but he looks kinda goofy right now." All the hosts looked from you to them and smiled. "They're awesome together though."
"May this awkward couple be forever blessed!" Tamaki exclaimed.
Kyoya then stepped forward. "And now for the grand prize, a kiss from our royalty."
"Y/n with step in for Tamaki." Kaoru said with a banana peel in his hand.
"And the kiss with be for Toro Suzushima." Hikaru added with another banana peel in his hand.
Tamaki was shocked, and you turned to Kyoya. "I'm not gonna—"
"It'll lower your debt by a third."
"I mean it is just a peck." You smiled and headed down.
"Wha..." Tamaki said.
"Also," You said as you began walking down the stairs. "You guys need to work on your love letter skills, because that was embarring for me to read."
As you went down Suzushima saw you and gave you a surprised expression. "You..."
"Y/n," Kanako said. "Were you the girl with Toro?"
"Hi guys. We just needed to give you two a gentle nudge. I promise I'm not in love with Toro. And I'm really sorry and embarrassed they gave you that stupid letter. I didn't write any of that." You smiled at them.
He nodded. "Thank you."
You then looked at Kanako. "May I?"
"Sure. It'll mark the beginning of our relationship."
Up from the balcony, Tamaki was reaching out for you weakly. "I wonder if this is y/n-chan's first kiss?" Honey thought out loud.
This made Tamaki snap, and he began running to you. "Wait y/n~!"
He slipped on the twins' banana peels and accidentally pushed you, causing you to kiss Toro on the lips instead. Kyoya did say that a little accident would make the night a little more interesting.

Lunch with the family was an event that all three of the girls couldn't care less about. It was something zeen had to hide from Drew because it was just too soon for him to deal with her parents have not so long ago met her notorious sister.
she saw him walk into the apartment at 10:30 after finishing his morning run. She had freshly gotten out of the shower and was getting ready to go to mass in a lovely plum jumpsuit while he looked like a gorgeous mess in his slightly sweat slicked hair and almost wet clothes making him look even hotter.
Good morning darling she says to him a smile on her face.
Walking up to her he hands her a cup of coffee with a kiss to her fore head. She closes her eyes and breathes his neck.
I missed you.
Me too. He answers back.
He hands her the coffee and sits down next to her.
What are we doing today.he asks enthusiastically.
Umm I have to go to mass and then a thing I have to attend .
Ohhh. What thing.
Just a small personal thing nothing important.
He looks un sure but tells her he might go into work later since she went be here. However she tells him to not change his plans at his account
.
Later during the day.
He nodded slightly and felt the colour draining from zeen's face. Was she embarrassed of dating him. As far as he knew he was on the satisfying to look at spectrum and sure she didn't exactly know how much money he had he still didn't expect it to be an issue.
Having had enough he walked up to the table to introduce himself. Reaching the table he saw the couple who were unmistakably her parents. He put on his charming smile and introduced himself.
After she left her house he decided to go to one of his hotels that was closest to her house and work in that office . He dresses in a blue pinstripe suit. One of her preferd ones and worked for what seemed like 40 minutes.
once done he walked outside to the grounds to sit by the pool for a while when her laugh caught his ears. He turned to the source of that sound hoping she had surprised him at work only to see her at a table with 4 other people. Two of whom he he met before and one he was sure he hated. He sat close by observing her behaviour. She looked relaxed and at ease. But upon further inspection he concluded all three of the girls having stif postures and talking about random things and at an extent things he was definitely sure she hated. Tirza looked around and caught sight of him before elbowing her sister slightly.
Good afternoon. My name is Andrew Knight, I own the hotel and the restaurant.
I apologise for interrupting his fantastic meal but I had to come say hello.
Not at all Mr. Knight .The man replied.
Christina looked at the tazeen but was wise enough to keep her mouth shut.
He went to speak but was interrupted by tazeen.
Mr.knight works in the building of the firm Christina works for. She says. The parents immediately start to coo and talk about how proud they are of her and her accomplishments and both the sisters share a fleeting look. After about 5 minutes of meaningless conversation and recognition for the terrible relation zeen and her younger sister he decided to excuse himself. Irritated and mildly hurt that she still hadn't introduced him.
Mr.vincent he said looking at the father. Might I please borrow tazeen for a minute I have a position in my management team that might be available and would like to introduce her to my manager. Christina had spoken fairly well of her. Te father nods and she cautiously steps up and follows me I turn and smile at the family before walking away with her following me. I grab her forearm as soon as we are out of sight and hear her flinch. I turn around to look at her and for the first time our relationship she seems unsure of my reaction.
Would you like to explain that.
She remains quite.
Are you embarrassed of me. He asks flat out.
Of course not. she sounds genuinely surprised he would think that.
Why hide it then.
He reluctantly agrees and walks her back to the table but she stops him before reaching and plants a chaste kiss to his lips.
A promise .
I don't know. Can we please discuss this later. He knows what that means, she'll avoid the topic now and ignore it completely later. He looks around noticing people are out of earshot and whispers in her ear.
Alright but take care of yourself.
He sits down in his previous spot and she joins the table. Telling them that the previous spot had been filled already and she is happy with the job she has. He hears her parents tell her she should have worked and talked harder or have been more persuasive in order to get the job and he hears christina say she is happy she didn't get the job. A statement which the parents completely ignore. He makes to get up and walk towards them again but she shakes her head at him. Thee parents start talking in a language he doesn't quite understand. By the end of the meal he realises why they have such a terrible relationship. The parents do nothing to stop Christina's antics while they argue amongst themselves trying to up one another. Tirza pays the bill while tazeen walks the family out. The parent get into a car and Christina gets in the driver's seat they hug goodbye and she walks back to see tirza and Drew talking. She notices Tirza Pat his arm and tells him not to be harsh. He let's out a deep breath and walks over to see tirza off. He kisses her cheek and closes the door for her. Telling her to convey his greeting to Oliver. (Tirza's boyfriend and a very good friend of his)
She leaves and tazeen starts walking inside only stopping when she realise she doesn't know the way
She falls limp in his arm and quietly agrees to talk about it later.
He takes her hand and guides her to a path that leads to a calm secluded section of the garden where no one is.
What the fuck was today. He asks her.
Nothing.
That's not only the real problem
It didn't look like nothing to me.you had lunch with your family. I get that but why did you not talk about us.
What do you mean.
Why won't you let me protect you. I have to watch your parents complain and talk about their lives without once asking if you were okay or needed help.
Look you don't know what they're going to do if they find out we're together.Dad has told us since day one. No one white and I know this was kinda weird but that's what's up and let's say If this does happen and they're okay with this the constant questions of are we ready for marriage will start and I don't want to put you through that.
Oh really. I agree but it's clear enough that I don't like what I know and have seen. I'm just saying I still don't like the fact that Christina was with you .I don't trust her and since you won't tell me why I feel that , there isn't nothing much I can do about it.
. Look I really don't want to talk about this and I hate to say this but I need space I feel overwhelmed and crowded.
With that she walks away.
Later that night around 8 30 the concierge rings the intercom telling him that zeen is here.
You don't know anything about them.
He feels slightly vexed knowing that she is one of the 2 people on the access list other than him. But still instils on announcing.
He is sitting in the living room still in his suit from this afternoon working away as she walks in.
Hey she says.
Hello he greets back. Setting his laptop on the table he stares at her as she figets. Somehow finding a slight sence of pleasure at making her nervous.
Have you though about today.
She nods .
Would you like to discuss it. He offers still not having touched her. He sees her fingers twitch slightly before setting in her lap. She draws a deep breath
I'm sorry she says. I realise the position I put you in and apologise for this afternoon. I know you're angry at me not introducing you and I'm sorry I just cant deal with them. They have a very superficial place in my life and that's all that is important.
He nods once more.
Please say something she asks him.
He looks around noticing people are out of earshot andThere isn't much but I will say that is your decision to tell me when you are ready but that isn't my problem. She feels the immediate change in his body language before she feels one single finger caress her face.
I trust you you know. More than you might believe it. My parents had the strongest marriage in the family. But by their 34th anniversary they were done with each other
With us
With life in general.
Ultimately I decided that I couldn't deal with something like that and I'm not scared of it because I want something like that. I'm scared because we might have a chance and I don't know if I want that
you don't trust me.You not trusting me doesn't make me feel bad he tells her looking directly in her eyes.
It hurts right here he says putting her hand directly over his heart and here he says dragging it slightly upwards towards his windpipe. I need to provide for you and protect you because you've already had enough shares of bad experiences In life and it makes me feel like maybe just maybe you'll care about me.
No she let's out with a sob. I care for you more than you know.
He pulls her to him and she stays there for a moment before pulling away and getting up. She starts walking towards their room. And he follows her into the shower striping as they go.
She let's out a breath and turns the shower off while he grabs them towels
They're both standing under the hot shower holding onto each other he grabs his soap from the shelf and begins to scrub himself and her paying special attention to the scars on the left thigh. They go back to holding each other before she starts speaking.
He wraps one around he hair and gives her her robe. In her mind she whispers I love you to him and she whispers it back. In reality a slight fear settles in that he might let go once he finds out the truth
But that isn't important now.what is important now is that we're together and i won't let anything hurt you

Late night imagine (For Roji)
She’s the one
Think about her face every time I wake up
At night I wanna ask about how her day was
But I just haven't told her yet
11:30 am
(23.4.20)
He sits in the bed next to Minhyuk. His laying on his back with his phone in his hands scrolling through his Instagram news feed looking at everyone else’s awesome days with their girlfriends and all the old couples making videos and getting older together.
He smiles at some of the pictures, until she pops up into his mind.
“Oh I forgot I haven’t asked Rojina how she’s going yet? It’s her birthday tomorrow” He sits on his side.
There’s nothing but silence in the room, Kihyun could feel a stare. He looked over at the other bed to see Minhyuk looking up from his phone and smirking at him.
“You really can’t stop thinking about her can you?” Minhyuks on his belly whilst his feet are up in the air waving around like a teenage girl.
Kihyun laughs nervously, his face turning a light shade of pink. He ruffles his wet hair and pushes it back exposing his forehead. He sighs again.
He is constantly wanting to see how she’s feeling and what she’s doing. He cares about her so much that is what is constantly on his mind from the moment he wakes up till the moment he falls asleep.
He knows he doesn’t have a place in her heart yet, he admits it, but he always manages to put those thoughts aside and thinks about how much he can love her no matter the distance in their feelings.
Minhyuk can hear little tapping noises in front of him, he looks up from his phone again and sees Kihyun tapping his blank phone screen.
“Just text her, she might appreciate it you know” Minhyuk grabs his lips and plays with it. Kihyun groans and rolls over on his stomach. His heart is racing again.
12 am
(24.4.20)
K: Happy birthday beautiful ~
Love U (Rojina POV)
You make me crazy it's not just the wine
Go on and take me right across the line
Looking at you, I got one thing on my mind
8 pm
(24.4.20)
Saeng il chuk ha ham ni da
saeng il chuk ha ham ni da
sarang ha neun Rojinaaaa
saeng il chuk ha ham ni da
Your friends were all extra. Some were screaming the song, some were 3 octaves lower then normal and some were just soothing… you look over at Kihyun who had the biggest smile. He was clapping and laughing so hard that his little dimple showed on his cheek.
Tonight, you wore your tight black dress since your friends made this birthday a little more special then the others. You were all sat at fancy restaurant in the private section.
“Make a wish Rojina” Kihyun whispered in your ear sending shivers down your spine. He was on his knees next to you. He placed his warm hand on your cold shoulder sending heat waves down your body. His hands were so soft, and he smelt so good you felt a little confused at how much more attractive he looked tonight. His skinny looked so soft, his eyes were darker, and his hair was slicked back showing his forehead.
“ooh- you’re so cold?” his eyes widened. He panics a little removing his jacket and placing it on your bare shoulders. At this point everyone had moved around, someone had taken the cake to cut it up and the other were letting you have your moment… moment? Was it a moment? No no it definitely not a moment.
You looked away trying to join into another conversation
But… every time you tried to draw your attention to something other than him you always managed to make eye contact with him. At some point he looked flustered, bit his lip a little and looked away at the other boys.
“You know you’re still with Wonho right?” Eleni whispered scaring the shit out of you.
“Yah I know!” Your heart rate had increased by 100.
“Really?” her voice going high pitched, crossing her leg she continued eating a cake.
“I mean… I don’t know if eye fucking Kihyun is you remembering Wonho” you choked on your drink slapping her arm. You continued coughing and she stared laughing at your pain.
“Shut up!” you drank more wine hoping it might get you drunk enough to forget.
“I’m just stating the facts” she got up and walked over to other side where her boyfriend was sitting.
This night continued to confuse you.
You missed Wonho the truth was, but you guys ‘technically’ broke up 5 months ago. He hasn’t bothered to call you back, he just left you without saying anything and now your lost. It’s not like you hate him but it’s not like your happy that he left you with no explanation. You still love him but you’re slowly losing hope in waiting for him. Questions like when will he come back? Will he come back? Was it my fault did I scare him away? What can I do to get to where he is right now?
10.30 pm
“Kihyun I really don’t think this is a good idea” Kihyun laid on top of you. You were both out of breath from your heated make out but things started to get serious. His face wasn’t the same as usually, he seemed darker and much more determined.
“I want you now, even if we both regret it in the morning”
“but we’re drunk Kihyun”
“It’s not the wine baby”
His touch was soft, gentle something you missed and something you’d lost. He kissed your forehead. You grabbed his face pulling him in to kiss you. His lips were soft, you could taste the wine which didn’t feel great but something was telling you that this night was more then this moment.
Happy without me (Wonho POV)
Do you think about me sometimes?
'Cause I think about you sometimes
You can’t hold my heart no more (Rojina POV)
And, there's nothing that I can say at all
You can't hold my heart no more
And I'm waiting for your arms to fall
You can't hold my heart no more
11 pm
2.05.20
“Hi” your heart sank. It hurt so much hearing his voice again. Your eyes watered immediately; you took a deep breath holding the phone away, so he didn’t hear you.
“Wonho if you’re ringing to try and apologise, I’d rather just not hear it”
“Rojina…”
“Just tell me you’ve been ok-ay” your voice broke a little.
“Rojina”
“STOP SAYING MY NAME! Just tell me you’ve been okay I don’t want excuses and that nonsense bullshit Wonho” you were crying. You hated this, you hated showing him that you struggled without him.
“I’m sorry, I know you’ve been worried I’ve asked the boys about you every week, I don’t think you’ll understand anything I explain to you now”
You stayed silent. Your heart was in pain, his voice made you so mad but so happy and relieved.
You were both still silent.
“I missed you” he whispered in the phone, you could hear the sniffles from the other side of the call.
“I just need time” he spoke again each time his voice getting weaker.
“I have to go… thanks for remembering me… but I’ve moved on now Wonho, I can’t stand holding my heart away from other people anymore just because I’m depending on you to come back and hold it for me and protect it, because I trusted you with my heart once and this is how you treated it”
The phone stayed silent; it was just sobs coming from Wonho.
“Mm” he agreed, he had no words.
“It was nice knowing you Wonho, I hope you finally figure out what you need to figure out”
You ended the phone call, you laid on the floor, your heart hurt, the tears were never ending.
GOT MY NUMBER (Rojina POV)
If you need someone who can love you while he's gone
Baby, you got my number, got my number, whoa
When you realize it ain't him that's on your mind
12 pm
You saw your phone buzz again, you wiped your tears and opened it with a racing nervous heart. Your heart was relieved to see Kihyun’s appear on your screen.
K: Hi, are you okay? I just wanted to see how you were.
Your heart fluttered again, you hesitated.
R: Please come here.
K: Why?
R: I just need you..
K: I’ll be over soon.
You were nervous, you’ve never felt so many emotions within one hour.
You heard your doorbell ring and you quickly ran to the door. You wiped any left-over tears before you opened the door. He stood there with a bag in his hands, his black hoodie and his face bare. He dropped his bag and wrapped his arms around you, holding you tight. He rubbed your hair as you started to sob again. His hoodie was soft, and it smelt fresh. You held on to his hoodie hoping he would never let go.
“Don’t cry please” he pulled you away and you giggled a little feeling embarrassed that you cried so easily.
“I told you anytime, no matter what, you have my number and you can call me, and I’ll be right over” he held your shoulders and looked at you with a worried expression.
You both sat on the couch, you put your head on his shoulder and stared out into your own thoughts.
“You know he did text us every week but… he told us not to tell you”
You nodded already knowing the situation.
“I would be saying to forgive him right now but I also have to worry about my own feelings right now to, you know?”
You looked up at him confused.
“since that night together… you have been on my mind and even before that and ill keep hiding my feelings to step away from you and wonho but-“
You cut him off by pecking his lips, he was talking too much for your brain right now. His face was bright red this time.
“I know how you feel and I know that I feel something too but you just have to give me more time” you managed to finially say. He nodded biting his lip, looking down at his hands. You grabbed his hands and leaned against him weakly. He moved his arm out of the way and let your head fall into his lap. Your felt all sorts of things but this moment was definetly making you feel at ease. He did something to your heart that you hadn’t felt before, warmth and safeness.
Bye bye its late.

"What- I thought Gwil- never mind, did I hurt your shoulder?" You stumble over your words and he chuckles, the curve his red lips are sporting making your insides melt.
"No, you didn't."
"Oh thank heavens. Sure I didn't add to your injuries? " You had to say it but luckily, he shakes his head good-naturedly and seems to have shrugged off the issue. "I'm okay now. I've been for so long actually." At least you've got the conversation going, against the odds of you doubting that it might've ended up awkward with how long you haven't been in touch. You smile crookedly and rub your arm, sighing profoundly to say another word but as you open your mouth to do so, Ben beats you to it. "What about you? How've you been?"
You shrug. "Same old but tortured...and pissed...at Joe...for doing me injustice like that." He rubs the back of his hair and cocks his head to one side. "Oh? Tell me about it."
You give him a brief, speculative look– thinking that it's a miracle you're talking normally like you haven't kissed each other the day you left him lamenting on a hospital bed, been in contact for an entire year and made love with your eyes during the ceremony– in that order.
You snap out of it and look around the busy reception. "I- well-"
"To make it easier, let's head out for a walk on the beach, shall we?" Ben steps aside to let you leave before him and you tuck a tendril of your hair behind your ear, nodding as you walk ahead. He follows you out and you glance over your shoulder, looking past him and seeing Joe wiggle his brows at you from their table– to which you widen your eyes in annoyance and a little gratitude.
Your walk has been graced with the twinkle of a thousand stars and the calm splash of the evening waves against the shore. You've let your hair down from the tight bun you've put it in and taken off your sandals to traipse along the water while Ben remains along the dry sand to stay practical– not that you aren't. He just has his shoes on while you're holding onto yours.
You haven't strolled far from the party with the lamps spanning from the vicinity within the reception still present as you tread along. You've told him all about Barcelona and your studies and everything else concerning your life there; so far it's been good and jolly. He's taken a new project and is in the process of filming, something you've congratulated him on as well– the previous one being his full recovery and you didn't bother to bring up the prior events to that, it might just lead to something you'd lose your voice to talk about. It's a relief that you are able to share a few laughs in between, something you thought wouldn't be possible anymore. You haven't talked to each other like this is ages.
"I guess we're both working our fingers to the bone." He chuckles and stops in his tracks to enjoy the breeze. You involuntarily mimic his stance and stand semi-still on the water, tossing your sandals onto the driest part of the sand. "I guess. Business before pleasure they say."
"Well my business is my pleasure so it seems like it only applies to you." The smile on his face widens thoroughly and you scoff underneath your breath, swinging your leg back and forth, creating mini splashes. "Excuse me, it applies to neither of us. I love working for something I know will finally lead to my dream."
He hums and bends down to pick up a pebble, casting it smoothly against the water and makes three skips. "It just occurred to me that you never once told me anything about your dream to become a doctor or anything." You give him a fleeting smile and shake your head, crossing your arms as you begin admiring the sky. "If I had told anyone, it wouldn't come true."
"Seriously?"
You raise your hands up briefly in defense and let out a chuckle, bending down to pick up a pebble to skip as well. "I'm living proof that it's effective, you should try it sometime." While you cast your pebble and watch it skip, he studies you intently and with great focus, drawing in a sharp breath before taking off his shoes to join your spot in the shallow water. He sets it aside and stands next to you, lifting his gaze up to the sky and then to you as you take in the cluster of stars dotting the heavens.
The gleam in your eyes as you beam at the starry view puts him under a spell and you sense his piercing stare, encouraging you to catch his fixed look. "What is it this time?"
He gulps, his mouth going dry. "I've sent you a message a couple of weeks back. Never got a response from you..."
You angle your head to one side amusingly. "I replied? Maybe you just don't check your inbox that much- and wait, I changed my number, how did you-"
"Our boy, Joe."
Of course. Joe really needs a new girl in his life, he must be exhausted from being such a mediator.
"And yes, I don't check my inbox a lot. Busy as a bee lately." He adds with a defeated smile present. You weave your fingers together, keeping your vision limited to the horizon yet sensing his eyes penetrate through you.
A little shy to let him see your blush creeping up your cheeks, you tear yourself away from his gaze and sigh inwardly. "I know that look somehow."
"For the third time asked in this lifetime, would you care to finish the dance we had at the after party? A dance to satisfy all the dances we never had the chance to finish. "
Your mouth shamelessly hangs like an attic door with loose hinges at how he was able to remember that. You recall his attending physician say that there would be no risks of amnesia or any sort of memory loss, although he shouldn't be able to recall minor details.
But then your dance wasn't a minor memory.
Ben's still waiting for your answer and you recompose yourself from the jaw drop, stuttering in the slightest as you speak up. "Uh y-yeah. I mean, we never get to finish dances, am I right?"
Without tethering himself from taking your hand in his, he draws you close to him, the movement of your legs making small ripples and swishes in the water. You can't keep a firm eye on him and as he understands your uncertainty due to how long it's been since the pair of you have closed a distance, he manually positions your arms around his neck, putting a little forethought into snaking his hands around your waist to ease you into it again.
"Hey, like old times, right?" He cajoles softly and you look up at him.
"Like old times." You repeat after him and find it easy to stare into his eyes again, once more submitting yourself to the metronomic beat of your heart. He initiates with light sway, feeling the crashing waves beneath your feets put an effect to how you're moving. With you studying every detail of his face adoringly, you notice the small yet noticeable scar on the near left of his forehead; a small residue of his injury. You frown as you reach up to trace your finger smoothly across his scar, your heart breaking at the memory of that night.
Ben takes notice of your flitting expression and cups your cheek to alleviate the worry you've put yourself in at the sight of his scar. "Hey, hey. Don't worry about it, I'm okay now."
You hang your head apologetically, chewing on your bottom lip with the urge to bring up what you wanted to suppress out of guilt.
"I'm sorry if I left you like that. At the time you really needed me the most, I scrammed and ghosted you for an entire year. I broke my promise, your arm and a small fraction of your skull," as inappropriate as it is to laugh a little at it, you let it slip past your lips anyway to give it a stretch and lighten the weight on your shoulders, "and it's all thanks to Joe for making up that worst case scenario."
Joe did say you'd hurt him on every possible level– ranging from physical to spiritual. Though you didn't afflict him physically per se, your carelessness on the highway did. "I'm so sorry, Ben, for letting my emotions get in the way of what we had. Our friendship. You loved someone else then and being in a way cursed with unrequited feelings, I-I had to distance myself."
He assures you with a loose smile, twirling you under his arm and leisurely pulling you back to his body. "Every bit of it is alright. I had sworn on the day we met that I'd protect you with every fiber of my being and I should be the one that's sorry. All you ever did was love me," he stares down at you intimately, lifting your hand to his lips and kissing your knuckles, "though how clueless and unbearable I was," a kiss to your wrist, "through all my complaints and nasty fits," a kiss to your cheek, the sensation making you giggle slightly, "through my clumsy tendencies, " a kiss to your nose, "through all my mood swings after a bad day on set," an elongated kiss on your forehead, parting away deliberately before flicking his eyes to your lips and back to your Y/E/C orbs. He gulps audibly at how he's asking you for permission to do it. "When I couldn't return that love to you because I was blind enough to let Rosy stay. For loving me...in both my lowest and highest."
He's risking a few inches in but you can tell he's holding back. You slacken your arms from his neck, little by little dropping them to your sides as his green eyes finally overwhelm you.
The corner of his eyes crinkle as he smiles, breathing out the words you've long waited for. "You've held my heart in your hands even when you were miles away and though you won't be staying for long, I'll always be waiting." In the same way you had when you left, you tip your head back to let his lips meet yours only this time it doesn't take him by surprise. Your lips don't move against each other for a few seconds and you pull away, breathless.
His green eyes are wide yet flecked with awe, unruly brows lightly creased together with small strands of his combed back, blond hair falling into them but they soften as the smile on his face widens. "You're not with Joe, are you?"
You chuckle, shaking your head and heaving out a defining exhale. "I never was. You're not with Rosy anymore, are you?"
He shakes his head as well and it appears the blissful grin on his face won't be coming off anytime soon.
"Long done. I love you, and you alone."
You'll be blaming him later for the ear-splitting grin now etched on your face.
"I love you too, Benjamin."
He throws his head back in relief and lifts you up in his arms, tilting his head back as he savors the full feeling of your lips on his, the kiss gradually becoming open-mouthed.
As if on cue, the fireworks meant for Rami and Lucy come launching up into the sky and bursting into bright colors, the sparks raining down and vanishing into thin air shortly after. Cheers of the people emanate from the party as Lucy and Rami share the same kiss from outside at the same time you and Ben are. You pull away with unridable grins on your faces and share the magical sight of the fireworks lighting up the night sky with no other disturbances to ruin the moment.
"You think they'd start wondering where we are?" You hum with your head rested against his chest. He kisses your hair and smiles as he tightens his hold around you, revelling deep in the moment.
"They'd get the idea, babe. They'd get the idea."
Lucy was right, Ben has always been your soulmate; the three dances you've had in your lifetime somehow always brought you back to each other. Hopefully the one you just had will be the one that will never tear you both apart ever again.
You've yet to thank Joe for tricking you into thinking that it was Gwilym he wanted to spin you off to.
How magical is that tape you used to stick the polaroids together?
It somehow pieced you and Ben in the same manner and stood the test of time.
