I love modern AUs that are like. So specific. I just read a fanfic where the characters were pharm techs in a CVS. The author described their job vividly, from organizing meds to collecting insurance info. It’s so evident that either they’re in that field or are really passionate about it and I love that like okay OP go write about your life to me I’ll read your memoir delivered in fanfic AU style.

y'all know how i'm writing a lengthier au fanfic right now right? well i have character bios/intros for it! these basically lay out who everyone is in this au. i just think it's neat and hopefully gets ppl excited 👀

takashi shirogane - extremely talented actor with a lot of social capital, despite the fact that he is an out gay man. played the adorable, lovable leading man in rom-coms and sitcoms for a while and has recently graduated to more dramatic roles, which he excels in. everyone seems to love and respect him for the most part. picked up keith when he tried to steal his car at a younger age (10?) and hasn’t stopped looking out for him since; they’re like brothers. 

keith kogane - guy who hates celebrity culture but got foisted into it due to his association with shiro. has a reputation for being handsome goodboy shiro’s naughtier younger brother who flips off the camera, punches paparazzi, and has no filter. hates every moment he’s forced to endure hollywood life, but does so to protect and be there for shiro. has been smeared by the tabloids extensively, both for being a delinquent and for being gay. keith did not choose to come out, like shiro had before him, but instead was outed by a member of a gay forum he frequented who figured out his identity (he was 17 at this point). hates society and has a chip on his shoulder.

lance mcclain - starry-eyed hopeful fresh off of his first non-extra role and new darling of the press. gunning for lead man roles in romcoms; knows he’s bisexual but doesn’t want to come out for fear of his family’s reaction and because he believes it will smear his reputation and thus chances to get the roles he wants. this view is understandable and pretty accurate, but it means that he is actively hiding himself and presents intense complications when he and keith start being “a thing.” has a reputation for being charming (if a little sleazy) and flirty with women, which is both natural to him and carefully cultivated so he has the best chance at getting romcom roles. he idolizes shiro–in part because he’s an out gay man, though he’d never admit that–and wants to be mentored by him so badly he’ll make himself a nuisance in shiro (and keith’s) life until he can.

allura altea - orphaned daughter of famous actress mother and professor father who died in a hit-and-run when she was 16. keith’s best friend; they’ve affectionately dubbed themselves the “dead parent’s society,” but the press likes to call them “?????.” allura was being brought up as a future actress by her parents, having starred in many dcom-esque roles as a child, but when they died she quit all of that and kind of just does her own thing now. currently, she’s enrolled in UCLA as a politics major. 

coran wimbleton-smyth - retired acclaimed director who occasionally signs himself on as a producer for works he thinks are particularly meaningful. he’s the producer for shiro’s next film, a sci-fi space opera a la the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy, and he’s gunning for shiro’s character to be explicitly gay. genuinely good-natured and wants to be involved with his projects; has a reputation for being the kind of director/producer to bring donuts in for everyone and cancel shooting days if the weather gets too hot. would support the current (2023) strikes. wants to see everyone succeed, but especially shiro and his family. 

hunk garrett - lance’s bestie and bisexual-awakening! aspiring personal chef to celebrities, but currently works at a restaurant and attends california institute of technology for engineering, because why not? met lance when lance went to eat at the restaurant he worked at and liked the food so much he asked to personally thank the chef; hunk had changed the dish last-minute as it went out the door, ratatouille-style, and so he gets the credit. they’ve been besties ever since! 

matt holt - lance’s young agent! saw potential in lance because of their shared personality-type, but he can be ruthless when it comes to matters of public opinion and which roles lance should take, which lance both appreciates and dreads. committed to doing what’s best for lance’s career, whatever the cost.  katie “pidge” holt - matt’s younger sibling that is pushed into lance’s orbit unwillingly due to her big brother’s job. hangs around because, whatever he may say, she really does like lance as a friend, and warms up to hunk quickly once they meet due to their shared interest in engineering/computers. has a geocities website dedicated to weird lizards and insects. low-profile enough to get away with things none of the others could manage.

nyma - shiro's ruthless but skilled publicist. knows how to turn public opinion around her finger, all while pretending to be innocent and nice the whole time. this doesn't mean she's uncaring, though; sometimes she'll let slip that she actually cares about shiro and keith's images because she cares about them, not just because it's her job and reputation on the line if she doesn't. isn't afraid to advise them to do painful and sometimes downright demoralizing things, but it's always in the interest of saving their necks, at least from her perspective.

this isn't an exhaustive list of the voltron characters that will be included btw; i'm going to find a way to put adam & romelle in if i have to die for it. but these are the main cast i have so far :) let me know what you think!

Lots of people (myself included tbh) ship klance (Keith and Lance). In s8 the creators made Allura/Lance canon (but then they killed her off and left the ending ambiguous it was weird). Anyway the fandom treats her like she's the most terrible bitchy woman ever but all she wants to do is end the war and avenge her destroyed home planet. Yeah she wasn't always the nicest or always the best, but you could argue some other characters in the show aren't either and they aren't treated near as bad as allura. people really just hate her bc Lance liked her. I don't think allura/lance are good together, but I still liked her as a character and thought she was interesting and had a lot of growth during the show. she DEF is not evil like some people portray her as in fic or talk about her in captions on posts. I've seen people say that they HATE her and that she's the worst and I'm like ??? let her live (well sort of ig she is dead now). lots of fic writers use her as the villain which is so interesting to me bc the show literally has villains like use them. anyway allura so perfectly fits the bracket description she deserves better.

I hate to acknowledge my time in this fandom but I hate the way the fandom treated her more. Allura was treated like shit no matter what side of the Great Ship War you were on because she was always a threat to the biggest ships (klance and sheith). At best she got put into Background Lesbian or Consolation Prize Shallura (Space Mom-zoned) (She was not a motherly figure btw. She was just Black). At worst she was violently demonized for being ~racist~ (kinda not cool with the alien race that blew up her planet for a few episodes), complete with misogynistic language hurled at her (she got called a bitch sooo much). Allura was a good and cool character and the show did her dirty but the fandom was somehow worse.

i apologise for speaking the dark magicks, but amidst the voltron fandoms many, many transgressions, there were a particular subset of people who just hated this girl. the infamous klance wars of the 2010s kept this perfectly fine childrens cartoon character in the sights of shippers everywhere, and she (and her voice actress im sure) were subjected to years of petty squabble blown up to global perportions. ive seen hate, ive seen rants, ive seen fanfics that made her homophobic. girls been through the ringer, and even though voltron was never the show its fandom wanted it to be, i believe allura deserved better

Every Supernatural Woman

Supernatural is so mean to women and committed to queerbaiting but it still gives Sam and Dean lovers to kill. The writers kill and villainize them and the fans get the few that remain

It literally used to be a running joke that if a female character got introduced you knew she was going to die soon because fans would react so negatively to her "stealing" one of the boys away from the big ship, whether it be destiel or wincest

Anon who was trying to get into superman, back again! I took your suggestion and watched the 1978 movie, it was so fun! “Nonhuman character whose best quality is how human they are” is such a good trope 😊 (Foo fighters flashbacks haha) I do wish Clark before he goes to metropolis was a little more like his Clark Kent act, made me a little sad to remember it was just a bit 😔 I think it would be nice if his “real self” was sort of in the middle of his two lives.

I also read Gene Luen Yang’s Superman Smashes the Klan graphic novel and enjoyed it a lot. Do you have any thoughts on My Adventures with Superman? It looks very cute though I haven’t had the chance to see it yet.

i’m so glad you liked it!! non-human characters defined by their humanity is one of my fav tropes, i knew i liked ff for a reason (said the fake jojo fan who never finished part 6 😓)

i agree, it would’ve been nice to see clark’s personal life feel more connected, but they paced it out rly well for a movie, esp an origin story! i think he exaggerates his clark kent persona fs, but i don’t think it was totally a bit either, esp w the 2nd movie—tho the sequel was also much more ridiculous, so i think everything got amped up in general. personally, i loved younger clark! to think of this gentle giant as having a bit of an arrogant personality, well… we all had our awkward teen years, right? i don’t think they’re mutually exclusive, but it is an interesting comparison

as for MAwS, i only got as far as ep6, but i don’t think it’s my thing. someone who’s further ahead can correct me, but it’s pretty much what you’d expect on the tin: superman for a she-ra or voltron audience (cartoonified anime style, interpersonal melodrama, fanfic scenarios, etc). def not a bad thing, but it just didn’t hit any of my personal interests when it comes to superman, and also anime boy-fied slade wilson was so fucking strange that i’m still reeling. i think i only ended up caring abt jimmy last i watched; lois frustrated me and clark felt empty, which are not rly opinions i’ve had for either of them before

that’s not to say that i didn’t have any fun! but i don’t think the fun moments were enough to motivate me to finish. i do hope ppl are enjoying it tho, i hope it’s a fun intro for new fans or a refreshing take for longtime ones (it has a lot of deep-cut references apparently!). maybe i should finish it some time before i rly make up my mind on anyone

I’m so sorry but I don’t have any fic recommendations 😭😭 my blog is where voltron ao3 goes to die tbh

1) I haven’t actually read any Voltron fic since 2018 and so I don’t even know where to start these days

2) I am the most picky person alive & have such specific standards for fics that most fics do not make the cut. There are certainly good klance fics out there but I probably have not read them because I hate so many of the more popular fanfic tropes

3) The Klance fics I DO like were all written in 2016/2017 and besties… If I’m going to be honest… I tried rereading some of my favorite fics from back in the day and they are Not That Great like I cannot in good conscience recommend these fics. No hate to the writers btw it’s just that the we were all victims of being 16/17 and had low standards

Ever since watching voltron, my bf and I have been having our little neurodivergent rants about it. Like, for example, the queer baiting. Shiro was gay. What do you mean? Give us sustenance people. Give us food. Shiro married a blank slate. How about you don’t kill off Adam. Hm? How about you don’t make Shiro marry a blank ass slate. Like, seriously, who was Curtis? Making Shiro gay isn’t representation to me. That’s lying to your audience and virtue signaling. You make Adam such a big deal, but he dies thirty seconds after. That’s terrible representation..

My boyfriend and I both agree that Shieo should’ve been asexual instead. I mean the black lion uses purple. So much so that I call it the purple lion instead. And, as aces ourselves, we think that would be excellent lgbtq+ representation.

I’m not done with my lgbtq+ representation thoguh. We, as the audience, got baited into Klance. I’m pretty sure there were some tweets talking about how they, the creators, knew Klance would be popular. They give us gay-coded scenes, but they aren’t gay enough. That’s the problem. The creators play it too safe. They shouldn’t care about what other people think. Pushing against stupid “criticism” is the first step to being a good writer. (Also, they give us two dead lesbians. Why?)

We also talked about the lions. The lions don’t show how the Paladins fit them. Allura just says, “oh, you fit because pfft.” Awakening Blue was amazing because of the setup. The rest weren’t given the same amount of gravitas Blue had. Pidge literally jumped in the vines, and that’s it. She pilots the Green Lion now. Hunk gets sort of the same gravitas as Lance, but still, it kinda sucks. Why doesn’t Blue go to the other Lions, then go to the other Lions? Why am I the only one who thought of this? Oh wait, my boyfriend made a fanfic about it nvm.

My boyfriend had a fanfic idea that was just a fix-it fic. If he wants to, I’ll post it. I think his ideas were really good. If you want to read some of his ideas, let me know.

My bf really liked the setup for Lotor, and I did too. He liked the fact that Lotor wanted a different way to expand the Galra Empire. He was like Azula and Zuko mixed together. If you look at one of my older posts, you’ll see my little mini rant about Lotor’s redemption arc. I want Lotor to be a Zuko-like. He’s an interesting character who deserves a redemption arc. Btw, my boyfriend wanted the fem!Keith member of Lotor’s group to be Krolia’s(am I spelling her name right?) daughter. We both wanted Lotor’s team to be redeemed too. More me because I actually watched Avatar, and I want an Azula redemption arc badly.

So… I didn’t know where season three ended and season four started. I just watched. The whole switching the Lions was weird. If the Lions choose certain characteristics for their pilots, then how come Lance got the Red Lion? Lance didn’t develop into a Keith-like person. If Red is stubborn and hard to tame (or something like that), how come Red doesn’t show that. You can’t say something and do nothing to affirm what was just said. SHOW Keith having trouble controlling Red, and Red disagreeing with him. SHOW Hunk being reliable. SHOW Pidge’s requirements for Green.

I felt the introduction to Zarkon was weird. I like how Avatar set up Ozai. Avatar showed Zuko being a bad person. Zuko was just the Banished Prince. Then Azula showed up. My boyfriend exclaimed, “This is Azula!? She’s only his daughter?! Wtf, Zhing?” Give us two or three seasons with Zendak, then have Shiro die, then fight Zarkon, then fight Lotor, then fight Zarkon again. This way better. How come no one thought about this? Oh, wait, my bf wrote a fix it fic.

Anyways, that’s enough writing for me. This is a long post. I’m gonna sleep.

The last day on earth. It was the last day on earth and Keith was still alone, on the top of the black lion.

It wasn’t bothering him that much, he liked to be alone… But, now that he had friends, he would have prefered to spend his time with them, maybe…

And everyone Had something to do tonight… I mean, that’s what he thought...

Keith POV:

I was sat on the top of the black lion, and I had already planned my evening:

watch the sunset, go back home,eat, sleep. Big plans. And I was ok with it, totally...

As the sun was almost gone, I heard gruntings and a voice comming closer to me: It was Lance…

I sighed. Didn’t he had plans for tonight? Other than breaking my OWN plan?

«Man! You can be a very hard guy to find when you want to!»

You know what happened next… Let me just skip this to tell you the part that you don’t know:

Lance and I were still sat on the top of the black lion, silent. He then turned towards me:

«Enough about my date, now! Tell me more about your sentimental life! And don’t lie to me, I can tell when you lie. So, do you have a girl on your mind lately? A guy?»

I blushed «What?! NO!»

«You’re LYYYINNNG! Just tell me already! I don’t see why you would be ashamed, Im Lancey! A pro!»

«A pro» I questionned, raising an eyebrow.

«Yeah! Just trust me!»

« You can be the pro of whatever you want, I’ll never tell you, lance»

«HO! So you’re admitting that you DO have someone in mind!»

I blushed harder « What?! No I-

«Yes you do! Tell me about that person!»

«I… It’s stupid, really, can we change the subject?»

«NOPE, You’re not getting rid of me that easily! Now speek, mullet!»

« I told you, It’s stupid...»

«In that case, It is, really, just let it go Lance.»

« Why would it be so stupid! Look Keith, I think you are overthinking it… Is is it like, the first time that you like someone?»

I looked back at the sunset, «Pretty much, yes. This is the worse feeling ever and I want to end this as fast as I can...»

Lance gasped at my words «YOU.TAKE. THAT.BACK. I get that you feel overwelmed but I don’t get why you feel like it is SOOOO bad!»

I frowned and clunched my fists, «BECAUSE. She’ll never like me back, that’s why.»

Lance stayed silent.

Then he spoke:

«How can you be so sure?..»

«She is perfect. She is smart, pretty, fun, coreageous and SO DAMN charismatic… I could go on for houres about what is perfect about her, really. Why would she even want me?...»

Lance frowned at me « I can’t let you say that! You are the black paladin, and that for a reason! And I hate to admit that but, I heard that some girls were thinking you were looking good… ( after me, of course).»

«Doesn’t matter what other girls think! She is one of a kind, really… And trust me, she might never give a shit about the fact that im the black paladin.»

Lance looked pissed; «What kind of girl would redject a PALADIN of Voltron! Wait, is it Acxa?! I saw the way you looked at her the other day!»

« Acxa?! NO!» I yelled as I was saking my head quick allong with my hands. Im not saying that Acxa is not nice looking or anything, She is just not the one that caught my eyes… And not my type.

Lance noded, surprisingly, he trusted me. Wait, can he really tell when I lie?…

Lance spoke again: «Ok, so… If it’s not Acxa… why would that girl not care that you are a paladin… The only way I see is that she is herself a- WAIT.»

I turned my gaze away as I blushed. I knew he had guessed by now.

« We have two girls in the team and even tho im pretty sure you are going to answer no ( you better), Is it Allura?»

«Are you fucking serious, Lance?» I slaped my forehead.

«OK, OK, get it! So… Pidge, right?»

I remained silent for a while before to speak again: «I told you it was stupid… Just, forget that, I don’t need you to tell me things I already know.»

«So you’re just… Giving up? That’s weird from you… Well actually, not, you like running away from your feelings, right?»

I raised an eyebrow, «What do you mean?»

« You ALWAYS try to keep your feelings away… The only emotion you have is anger, man. I mean, you sure grew and started to accept your feelings but huh, Im not sure that just… Runing away from your feelings for her will work forever. Love is a strong feeling that you can’t just wippe away. Trust me, many gyals redjected me and even if I was telling people that I was not feeling anything for them anymore, it wasn’t true. Well, It wasn’t true before I met Allura. Now, these girls doesn’t worth anything next to Allura. The fact is, Man, stop hurting yourself like that… AND STOP THINKING YOU DON’T WORTH ANYTHING! It’s not true and im sure Pidge knows that. She really likes you, I can tell. Now, get your ass out of here and fucking go get her!»

I sighed «Thanks but no. I have many reasons to not go.»

Lance raised an eyebrow: « Liiiiike?»

I blinked twice before to think of an answer, « Well… I don’t want to break our friendship...»

«WOW, that’s true, you do have a lot of reasons to NOT tell her...» Lance sarcastically said.

«Shut up. It’s still a good reason. As I said, she deserves better.»

«Better then the black paladin? Who even are you to decide what she deserves? I really don’t think she cares.»

«Sure, ok. But I know that she is better than me in every way. She should have a man that can be good enough, don’t you get it?»

«Are you done saying shit? Good, then no more talking and you take her out tonight. Before you start arguing, No, she doesn’t have anything planed tonight. She had her last family dinner on earth yesterday because her parents are working on the Atlas tonight and Yes, she is at the garrison right now. I won't let you give up on your first love when she is as amazing as Pidge.»

I panicked, «BUT-

«TSSSSSSS, No buts. Doesn’t need to be a date or something that brings you as a couple at the end of the day! Just, play it friendly for now, that’s how it alll starts. More you’ll spend time with her and make her feel confortable around you, more she’d want to be aroud and THEN, something can be possible.»

I stayed silent, increduly staring at him. «Just a friendly night?»

«Yeah, I know you want to spend time with her… just go ahead and stop running away! And who knows, maybe she likes your mullet!»

Maybe, for once, Lance was right…. Well, I don't know for the mullet part. I guess I hope she likes it but anyways... «But, what am I even supposed to do during a friendly night?...»

«… Friendly stuffs?»

«Like?»

Lance sighed, «Just Invite her to hang out and huh, I don’t know… eat? She is pretty simple, she hates fancy stuffs… Just take the black lion in the desert and order pizzas...»

«I guess I can do that… But, huh… I don’t really know how to ask, I’ve never done that before.»

Lance stared at me with a desperate gaze: «You know, you just ask?...»

«… But how?...»

«FINE, I’ll go with you! But then I’ve got to go get ready for my own plans, so we’re going now.»

«Wait- NOW?» I said as the anxiety started to grow.

We went back inside the Garrison and at every steps, I felt the anxiety grow,

My thoughts got cut by Lance stopping in front of me and some laughings comming from a nearby room. I heard Romelle, Allura, Nadia, Ina and P-… Katie. I don’t even know, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO CALL HER NOW?! Guess I’ll stick with Pidge for now…

Lance turned toward me with a serious look, I could tell that I was getting on his nerves but He is the one wanting me to do that so he is obviously getting himself mad on his own here…

«Ok, We’re walking in there, we take Pidge to the side and you ask her, alright?»

«I Guess...» I looked to the side.

«Good, let’s go»

We both walked in, getting all of our eyes on us. That got me very unconfortable, especialy when I saw her eyes on me. Damn. I forgot how these eyes could kill me just at the sight of it… I shivered as we waked towards the girls.

«Hello laydies, how is your evening going?» Lance said in a flirty tone as he gazed at Allura.

Lance talked to the girls for a while before he came to the main topic: «SO! I’d like to tchat with you longer but I’ve got things to do… Anyways, My bro Keith and I did came here for a reason! Pidge, Keith here wanted to talk to you, in private.»

Great… Now, everyone had their eyes on me and I bet they all knew what I was planing…

At this moment, I wanted to kill Lance for saying «Keith wanted to talk to you» and nor m«We wanted to talk to you» This feels SO suspect!

«HO, huh, sure» Pidge said with a slight blush. I think it was mostly because everyone was now staring at her.

«Then let’s go!» Lance started to walk out and we both followed him.

Once we were out of the room, the three of us faced each other:

«Ok then, Keith, go ahead!»

I took a deep breath and spoke up :

I took a last glance at her before Lance pulled me away, letting her standing alone, in the hallway. I saw how she was questionning me with her azel eyes, without saying a word…

Lance grabed my shoulders and looked at me, firmely :

«WHAT WAS THAT?!» He screemed in a whisper.

«I panicked, ok?! Now it’s done, can we move on?!»

He sighed, «Ok, how are going to get dressed tonight? And are you planing to be so awkward the rest of the night? Also, take a shower and wear some perfume, I can sens that you trained today...»

«One question at the time!»

«Ok, dress however you want, but not too much, It’s supposed to be a chill and nice night… For the awkward part, just relax now… It’s going to be fine, you know her for long now, Im sure it’s going to be ok. Lots of people (myself included tbh) ship klance (Keith and Lance). In s8 the creators made Allura/Lance canon (but then they killed her off and left the ending ambiguous it was weird). Anyway the fandom treats her like she's the most terrible bitchy woman ever but all she wants to do is end the war and avenge her destroyed home planet. Yeah she wasn't always the nicest or always the best, but you could argue some other characters in the show aren't either and they aren't treated near as bad as allura. people really just hate her bc Lance liked her. I don't think allura/lance are good together, but I still liked her as a character and thought she was interesting and had a lot of growth during the show. she DEF is not evil like some people portray her as in fic or talk about her in captions on posts. I've seen people say that they HATE her and that she's the worst and I'm like ??? let her live (well sort of ig she is dead now). lots of fic writers use her as the villain which is so interesting to me bc the show literally has villains like use them. anyway allura so perfectly fits the bracket description she deserves better.

I hate to acknowledge my time in this fandom but I hate the way the fandom treated her more. Allura was treated like shit no matter what side of the Great Ship War you were on because she was always a threat to the biggest ships (klance and sheith). At best she got put into Background Lesbian or Consolation Prize Shallura (Space Mom-zoned) (She was not a motherly figure btw. She was just Black). At worst she was violently demonized for being ~racist~ (kinda not cool with the alien race that blew up her planet for a few episodes), complete with misogynistic language hurled at her (she got called a bitch sooo much). Allura was a good and cool character and the show did her dirty but the fandom was somehow worse.

i apologise for speaking the dark magicks, but amidst the voltron fandoms many, many transgressions, there were a particular subset of people who just hated this girl. the infamous klance wars of the 2010s kept this perfectly fine childrens cartoon character in the sights of shippers everywhere, and she (and her voice actress im sure) were subjected to years of petty squabble blown up to global perportions. ive seen hate, ive seen rants, ive seen fanfics that made her homophobic. girls been through the ringer, and even though voltron was never the show its fandom wanted it to be, i believe allura deserved better

Kayano Kaede

shes genuinely a really tragic character who had potential for a really compelling, effective arc concerning grief, identity, healing, and finding trust again all while going through the inherent ordeal of being 15 years old….if she werent a female character in a shonen anime 😭😭 instead she gets sidelined during the show up until her big plot twist reveal after which shes immediately sidelined again. whatever i still love her and know her to be a character of all time who has suffered more than jesus. in my experience shes perhaps the female character who like. ive seen most *obsessively* hated due to her “getting in the way” of the ship b/w the male protagonist + deuteragonist (bc of her proximity to the both of them) u woild think shes the devil incarnate and not just. 15 and traumatised 

She had a crush on Nagisa and they kissed and a lot of fans ship him with Karma so theyre mad that Kaede is there. She is super silly and nice but the fandom hates her for standing in the way of karmagisa.

she's a sweet person that was an actor and loves her sister. she is the main love interest of the main character but doesn't interact with him more than most of the other characters for a majority of the story. Often I have seen them removed from the story only to become some homophobic jerk that's desperate for the main characters love instead of letting her keep the good friendship that her and the main character had before the romance.
