Beautiful Stranger | Azriel
Azriel x Reader | Azriel gets injured while on a mission and meets someone he never thought he would. aka you finding an injured Az and the mating bond snapping.
warnings: mentions injuries and blood; other than that, this is light & fluff
word count: 4,342
a/n: I love Halsey's Finally//Beautiful Stranger & when it came on my shuffle while driving, this fic played out in my mind.
Humming quietly to yourself to keep your thoughts occupied, you allow the glow of the moon and fireflies to guide you back to the village. Dawn Court was your home, but after the fall of Spring, you had volunteered to help its fae, creatures, and land heal from the devastation left by Hybernâs attacks.
Though the damage to Spring was immense, its beauty still endured. The air still held a lingering heaviness but the flowers had begun to bloom once more with promise and hope of a better future. Your task today had been to gather healing herbs, yet when you stumbled upon a field of dandelions in full bloom, you couldnât resist the urge to stop and admire the scenery. It was why you were returning late at night, long past the sunset you had promised to return by.
As you made your way along the path, the gentle breeze grew colder and sharper. It rustled the leaves on the trees and made the branches creak, its eerie sound halting your steps and silencing your humming. A chill of unease prickled your skin and your muscles tensed in alarm.Â
Then you saw them.Â
Shadows, darker than the night itself, swirling around you.
These were not the shadows you were used to seeing at night. No, these shadows felt alive and with purpose.Â
You shouldâve turned back. But there was something in the way they moved, fluid and insistent, that made you follow. With every step, they guided you away from the familiar moonlit path and deeper into the forest, pulling you toward the river that ran through the heart of the woods.
A flicker of blue light was coming from just beyond the tree line, catching your eye. Curiosity tugged at you, drawing you closer. The shadows slithered toward the faint glow, vanishing into the darkness by the waterâs edge.
When you finally reached the riverbank, your breath hitched at the sight before you.
A male lay sprawled on the shore, half-submerged in the water, his blood mingling with the riverâs water. Blinking your eyes, you saw the shadows that led you to him, clinging to his battered form and limp wings. They pulsed in a protective manner. Itâs then that you recognized the source of the blue light. It was coming from the gems attached to the leathers he wore.Â
Siphons. He must be IllyrianâŠbut what was an Illyrian from the Night Court doing in Spring? Alone?
It didnât matter. You immediately rushed and knelt beside him, your healerâs instincts snapping into action. Your fingerâs pressed against his neck, mind racing with worry and dread as his skin felt cold against yours. He mustâve been out for awhile now. The nerves eased slightly when you felt a pulse.Â
Weak but present.Â
You slipped your arms beneath him, the shadows aiding you as they wrapped around his arms, helping you turn him over to his side. His dark hair clung to his face, your hand reaching up to brush it back.
Your eyes finally met the face of the fallen warrior and something snapped.Â
So piercing and electrifying, it had your heart fluttering from the intensity. All at once, the golden threads of the bond youâd only heard stories about unraveled in your chest. They weaved between your rib cage, pulling you tight toward him. A pull so strong it left you breathless and in shock.
Fate and shadows had brought him to you. Your mate.
But the exhilaration of it all was soon smothered by panic, the golden threads beginning to quiver. His blood, too much of it, stained the riverbank. His body was limp in your arms, his breathing shallow.
You had found your mate and already, you were on the verge of losing him before you could even learn his name.
**
Azriel wakes to the sound of singing, a nice and sweet sound, and he catches faintly to the words. Heâs never felt so warm, so relaxed. His senses are dulled by grogginess, his body sluggish, but something feels⊠different. Lighter, somehow.Â
Beside him, his shadows stir, the familiar weight of their presence grounding him. But there's also something elseâ different from the cool and light caresses of his shadows. Firmer. Warmer. The pressure is foreign but comforting.
As his senses slowly return, the scent of herbs and incense reach him before his eyes flutter open. Where am I? He thinks, finally blinking his eyes to clear his vision.
The first thing he sees is you, the source of the beautiful singing.
Light streams into the room, casting a golden halo around you. It strikes him hard, stealing his breath and sending a shock through his chest. He doesnât know who you are, what you are. But youâre beautiful, so beautiful that his brows furrow in bewildered awe. Thereâs no way, he thinks. I donât belong hereâŠ
He wills his dry lips to part, his voice is rough and barely audible. âAm IâŠdead?â
Your eyes widen and your singing comes to a sudden stop, startled by his sudden words. The warmth he felt vanishes as you pull your hand back, and only then does he realize it had been your touch on his face earlier. Your hand hovers between you, glowing faintly with a bronze light, like the first rays of dawn, before you settle it into your lap.
âNo,â you finally answer. âYouâre not dead.â
Azriel tears his gaze from your face, even though some part of him protests. His eyes wander around the small room, taking in the sparse furniture, the wooden desk cluttered with jars and vials. The sunlight continues to stream through the single window, the curtain hanging doing little to dull the brightness thanks to the Spring breeze. It blinds him when it catches his eyes and he winces, looking away.Â
His attention is inevitably drawn back to you. Youâre seated beside him, perched on a small stool that does not look comfortable by the bed. His shadows, the loyal dark tendrils that always remain by his side, are dancing around you. Their movement is playful, loving almost and you donât seem bothered by it. As if theyâve done this before.Â
The sight stirs an unfamiliar flutter in his chest.
The flutter is cut short when one of his wings, too big for the bed heâs in, twitches and knocks into the bedside table. A vial tumbles to the floor, the sound of shattering glass jerking his body forward, and in an instant, the memories come rushing back.
He remembers the mission. Rhysand had sent him to the wall separating the mortal lands from Prythian. He had met with Jurian, the encounter brief, and then he was on his way backâflying over the Spring Court when he was ambushed. His mind aches as he tries to remember more but all he remembers is being struck by poisoned arrows and falling through trees. Multiple trees.
Hot, searing pain stabs through him at the sudden movement and your hands fly to his bandaged chest, gently urging him to sit back. âYouâre safe,â you reassure him. âItâs okay. Youâre okay.â
Azriel shouldnât feel comforted by your words, not when he barely knows you. However, he finds your voice soothing. He listens, allowing himself to slowly lean back against the pillows, despite his mind screaming at him that youâre a stranger. Your hands remain on his chest, glowing again with that soft bronze light, and the sharp pain in his body begins to ebb away, fading into a dull ache. Much more bearable.
His shadows return to him, sighing with relief as they nestle close. Azriel watches you, keen hazel eyes taking in more of your features. The curve of your lips, the softness of your eyes. They draw him in, and he finds himself unable to look away. Had it not been for the pain that shot through him moments ago, he wouldâve thought you lied to him about not being dead. Because surely you werenât from this world to have him in a daze like thisâŠ
âWho are you?â
âIâmâŠ,â you hesitate, uncertainty crossing your features. He watches with bated breath, waiting but the words seem to catch in your throat. You swallow, clearing your throat before speaking again. âIâm just a healer.â
âAnd here I thought you were an angel from above.â
A quiet laugh escapes you, and the tension in your posture melts away. The corner of your lips tug up into a faint smile, one that Azriel surprisingly finds himself mirroring. âSorry to disappoint.â
He doesnât think. The words spill from him before he can stop them. âI didnât say I was disappointed.â
The flush that dawns across your cheeks doesnât go unnoticed. You turn your head, trying to hide the reaction. Itâs too late. Azriel already saw it and even if he hadnât, his shadows are happily gushing over it. Some, the ones not distracted by your beauty, curled around his ear and whispered about the emotion lingering on your face, in your eyes.
There was more you meant to say. Words left unsaid and he wants to know, the curiosity and yearning bordering on desperate. His gaze assesses you again, searching for an answer. For a hint. His shadows continue to whisper. Good, they say reassuringly, sensing no danger or malintent in you. We found her for you!
She saved master's life. Master was out for three days and she stayed by masterâs side. Sheâsâ
âWhatâs your name?â You ask, pulling him from the silent conversation with his shadows.
Azriel is not one to give his name so easily, often going by what he wasâa Shadowsingerâ rather than who he was. Heâs also not one to dwell in places heâs unfamiliar with longer than necessary. But you saved his life and for some strange reason, his shadows had taken an immediate liking to you. They seem to trust you and therefore, so does he.
âAzriel.â
âAzriel,â you repeat and his shadows shudder in response, as though they, too, are captivated by the sound of it on your lips. His stomach flutters in time with their movement.
âWhat about yours?â
âY/n.â
âY/n,â he says, repeating your name the same way you had his. His shadows dance in the air around you both.
**
Itâs late morning, as you pick up the empty plate from him, that he feels the familiar sensation of talons scraping against his mind. Azriel?? Rhysandâs voice is urgent, the frantic panic of it making him wince. Your head immediately turns in concern and Azriel brushes it off with a small shake of his head.
Iâm alive. Azriel responds, his answer curt as heâs once again distracted by your presence.
Thank The Mother, Rhysand breathes a sigh of relief. Where are you? Are you somewhere safe? Do you need me toâ
Iâm fine. I was attacked while flying through Spring.Â
Who? Rhysand demands.
Given the fact that whoever ambushed me has made no move to find me and finish the job, Iâd say no one of importance. Azriel replies, lips curving into a small frown at the thought of being caught off guard and attacked. It rarely happened, his shadows always keeping him one step ahead of anyone and anything. Had they been distractedâŠ?
He turns his head, searching for the shadows in question. Some remained with him, choosing to burrow under the blankets. The others, however, were hovering at your side and helping you clean up from breakfast. One even opens the door for you and he hears you murmur a small thanks as you leave the room.
Azriel had spent most of the afternoon sleeping. He didnât want to, not liking the idea of being in such a vulnerable state with someone he barely knew. Itâs not that he suspected youâd harm him or had bad intentionsâyou literally saved his life for Cauldronâs sake! It was just a feeling he was not used to. To be able to sleep safe and sound.
When he woke up again, it was a brand new day. He realized the bandages on his chest and arm had been changed. He was slowly gathering his strength back. One of his shadows mustâve given him away because shortly after he woke, you had walked in with a friend.Â
âWow,â the dark haired fae murmured, her steps faltering. Her eyes had widened in wonder, taking in the large expanse of his wings that made the bed look ridiculously small. âThe Cauldron truly favors you.â
Azrielâs gaze couldnât help but narrow. Those words had been directed at you, not him.Â
Youâd introduced her as Poppy, explaining she was your friend, another healer whose family had taken you in. Poppy had left shortly after setting a steaming bowl of stew on the table right next to the bed. She had been adamant on letting him know her mother had made it and not you, which he found odd.
Azriel was surprised to learn this was your room and youâd given it up for him. He tried to protest, offering to sleep on the couch or floor. Of course, you had refused and he was even more surprised to learn you were more stubborn than he was.Â
Where are you in Spring? Rhysandâs presence in his mind pulls him back to the present. He hopes he hadnât accidentally projected his memory to his friend, wanting to keep it to himself for now. I can send Cassian, if youâre unable to fly.Â
No. Azriel responds immediately and he can feel Rhysandâs confusion. Iâm alive and safe. I just need more time to recover.Â
And without waiting for a response, Azriel brings up his mental shields again, shutting Rhysand out. He can only hope he doesnât send Feyre knocking on his mind next. Or worse, actually send Cassian to Spring, despite him saying not to.
He shouldâve said yes, and accepted the help. The Spring Court was among the least favorite of his courts, in tie with the Autumn Court. He had a strong distaste for the High Lord, who remained wandering through his forests like a beast.Â
As you return to the room, Azriel catches sight of a faint glow wrapped around your wrist. He hadnât seen it before, the glow of your magic outshining the gold ink etched there. A sun, cradled by a crescent moon, and below the moon, a fine lined star glimmers, connecting the two celestial bodies with its ray of starshine.Â
âYouâre far from home.â Azriel comments, nodding toward the tattoo.
âSo are you,â you answer, lips turning up at the slight flush that takes over Azriel. You then glance down at the tattoo on your wrist. The insignia of your Court with the added touch of your healing gift. The tattoo was an honor, a testimony of the oath you had taken after mastering your magic. âI came to Spring to help after the war.â
âWill you go back home after?â He asks, a little too quickly, then clears his throat. His shadows snicker beside him in a knowing manner. âOr will you stay here?â
âIâll stay here as long as Iâm needed.â
He doesnât understand why but a part of him feels relieved that youâre not attached to this court.Â
âYouâre welcome to stay here as long as you need,â you then add.Â
He feels an odd sense of relief, and his shadows give a little wiggle in excitement. He sends them a glare, and they sheepishly return to hiding under the covers. Though one brave shadow lingers by his side long enough to whisper, you'll find out soon Master.
âTheyâre cute," your voice pulls him from questioning his teasing shadow.
Azriel lets out a snort, the effort making his chest and stomach ache. Cute. His shadows had been called many thingsâstrange, unnerving, even unsettlingâbut never cute. They typically clung to him, weaving around his form quietly, careful not to disturb anyone. Unless he sent them on a mission of their own or they had a mission of their own.
Occasionally, theyâd make an exception for Cassian, creeping up behind him just to tap his shoulder and bask in his exasperation when he turned to find nothing there. Theyâd even tried their luck with Rhysand once, though he was never fooled. Yet, for reasons Azriel couldnât fathom, his shadows had taken an immediate liking to you, drifting toward you whenever they could.
The said shadows peek out from under the covers, almost shyly. If they could blush, heâs sure they would be at this moment. They're never going to forget this moment.
âI wouldnât call them cute,â Azriel replies, ignoring their indignant hisses.
Conversation flows easily between you two from there, Azriel giving into his curiosity to know and learn more about you. Much to his surprise, Azriel indulged you in your questions, telling you about his shadows and things about himself he rarely told others. They were small, trivial things such as his exact favorite shade of blue and his biggest pet peeve. Yet you held onto every word, every detail and it felt strangely comforting.
Two more days passed, Azrielâs body still healing. Slowly but surely. You had been able to recover one of the arrows that had shot him. Not that it mattered. Azriel was now, unfortunately, familiar with the effects of faebane. It hindered his healing and though it was frustrating, there was one upside to it allâthe friendship blossoming between you and Azriel.
Thereâs a knock on the door as you mix Azrielâs concoction for pain. âYes?â You call out.
Poppy peeks her head in. âI was just checking to see if I had given you enough spearmint for the pain tonic and also to let you know that weâll be out most of the day. If you wanted to take out your maâmale for a walk or something without being bothered by the little ones.â
You freeze and a sheepish look takes over your features, tainting your cheeks. âPoppy,â you say her name again in what sounds like a warning. âHe has a name, you know. And he doesnât need to be taken on a walk.â
âOh, right, Azriel,â she says, giving him a cheery wave. âHello again!â
âHello,â Azriel replies, shifting in the bed, despite the protests of his muscles. Heâs not at all offended by Poppy, her aura too bright and cheery to be bothered. He flashes you a grin that has your grasp on the mixer faltering. âI think a walk would be nice actually.â
âTold you!â Poppy replies. âAnyway, weâll see you for dinner. Send a butterfly if you need me.â
When the door closes, you let out a small sigh, shaking your head with a small, sheepish smile. âIâm so sorry about her.â
Azriel brushes off your concern, his eyes shining bright when he looks back at you. âHow about that walk?â
**
Azriel grunts as he pushes to stand, his wings trembling as he shifts his weight, unused to bearing himself after days of bedrest. He stumbles right into your arms, his usually steady form swaying. You quickly catch him, your arms coming around one of his sides. His shadows dart toward his other side, helping you hold him upright.Â
âIâve got you,â you say softly, your hold surprisingly firm.Â
He can't help it. He lets out a low, amused breath.Â
âWhat?â You ask.
âUsually, Iâm the one saying that.â
Your lips quirk into a smile, a gleam in your eye, as you help him find his balance. âWell, even the best need someone to lean on sometimes, right?â
Azriel stares at you. Something in his chest tightensâa weird but comforting sensation. Itâs similar, if not the same, to what he had felt when he first saw you. Warm and painfully sweet. The feeling reassures him that, though you were strangers mere days ago, youâre someone he can lean on.
âCome on,â you murmur, nodding toward the door.Â
Azriel lets you guide him through the house and out onto the porch. You settle there together, cutting the walk very short. You're mindful not to push him too far when he's still recovering. Azriel doesn't mind, the fresh air enough for him. He knows he isnât at full strength to protect you should anything arise. Even though you most likely know these forests better than himself.
His hands drift to the porch railing as he leans forward for support, fingers curling around the edge. The sunlight glances off his scarred hands, each ridge and mark stark against his skin. Heâd kept them hidden beneath the covers and out of your view while bedridden, hiding them instinctively, unable to forget the pitying glances theyâd drawn in the past. Though heâs sure you must've seen them when you rescued him.
Now, as he feels your gaze slide toward them, a familiar discomfort tugs at him. He starts to withdraw his hands, wanting to tuck them closer to himself.
But you reach out. Your hand hovers, brushing slightly over his. Thereâs a slight hesitationâan uncertainty in whether to bridge the space or leave it. In the end, you let your hand rest gently beside his.
Azriel hesitates, unused to this vulnerability, yet unable to move away. He glances up to meet your eyes and his guarded expression softens slightly. âTheyâre⊠not easy to look at,â he murmurs, his voice barely above a whisper. âI know theyâre not.â
âIâm familiar with scars, you know. They donât make you less of who you are.â
Azrielâs jaw tightens, his gaze dropping where your hands are barely brushing against one another. His throat feels tight, an ache heâs kept buried resurfacing.
âNot to me,â you continue. âI donât see you any differently because of them.âÂ
He searches your face and he sees something in your eyes that helps him slowly relax. His gaze returns to your hand, fingers hovering now over his. This time, thereâs no hesitation as you gently lay your hand over his, holding it as if the scars didnât exist at all.
Itâs such a simple gesture, yet it speaks volumes.Â
His shadows slither down his arm and toward where your hands connect. For the first time, Azriel feels no urge to hide, no shame from the past that has long haunted him.
A silence drifts down between the two of you, settling like a blanket over the conversation. Thereâs no need to fill it, no awkwardness there. Just a gentle, shared peace, stretching softly around you both. He turns his head, shifting his gaze forward and takes a deep breath.Â
He closes his eyes and a breeze rolls in, brushing against his skin and stirring his hair. His shadows begin to whisper excitedly. He basks in the sunâs warmth, and lets the scent of spring fill his senses from the fresh earth to the blooming flowers and the faint sweetness of pollen. It brings forth a tickle in his nose, and before he can stop it, he sneezes. His body groans in response, wings shuddering.
âBless you,â you say, but he notices the way your mouth quirks as if youâre holding back a laugh.
âWhat?â he asks, brows furrowing.
âIâm sorry,â you giggle, your free hand rising to stifle it. âItâs just⊠you have such a fatherly sneeze.â
Azriel raises an eyebrow, a rare, amused smile creeping onto his face. âFatherly sneeze?â He echoes. He has never heard the expression before yet he somehow understands it. If you thought his sneeze was âfatherly,â heâs curious to see your reaction to one of Cassianâs sneezes. That thought is enough to make him laugh outright.
It's so silly but the sound is so contagious that you laugh too. His shadows began to flutter around you, as if joining in on the laughter. Azrielâs gaze then drifts down, watching the way your lips curve in laughter, how your eyes crinkle at the corners, how effortlessly you draw light into his heart.
And there it is againâthat rush of warmth. Itâs mixed in with joy, so pure and intense it has to be coming from you. His heart stirs, his pulse quickens, his mind clears, and in a single, life-altering instant, he knows.
âYouâre my mate.â
Your smile falters, replaced by a moment of hesitation. Some shadows travel to you, brushing softly against your arms as if in a reassuring manner. He can't help but watch them, realization dawning on him.
âYeah, I am,â you admit quietly.
âHowâwhenâŠâ His voice catches, unable to form the words.
âI was walking through the forest when your shadows came to me. They led me to you, by the river. You were unconscious and bleeding. And then⊠the bond snapped for me the moment I saw your face. You were so cold and--andâŠ,â your face tightens, eyes glistening at the memory and Azriel can feel the panic you mustâve felt then. âIâd just found what so many only dream of and you were already slipping away...I thought Iâd never get to know your nameâŠâ
Azriel feels a pang deep in his chest as he absorbs every word. His chest feels tight again and he swallows thickly. âAnd when I woke up, why didnât you tell me?â
Your gaze falls, fingers twisting together. âI wanted you to heal, to feel better. Thatâs all that mattered.â
âI owe you my life.â
âYou donât owe me anything. I wouldâve saved you, mate or not.â
Azriel searches your face, touched beyond words at the sincerity in your tone. It made sense why he felt so drawn to you since the moment he saw you, why his shadows took a sudden liking to you and kept whispering "we found her, we found her!" They had known all this time, been able to sense it before he even could.
Looking back, Poppy being the one to bring him food and water and not you was not as strange as he originally thought. You were being mindful, not wanting to accidentally accept the bond without his knowledge. He felt an overwhelming gratitude for how gentle and considerate you've been with him all along. He couldnât help but wonder how he had gotten so lucky to be bound to someone like you.
âAnd would you have sung to me, mate or not?â Azriel asks, his mind drifting back to the exact moment he'd first woken up.
Your cheeks flush, and you glance away toward the gardens, suddenly refusing to meet his eyes. âWhat?â You let out a small huff. âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âWhat did I hear?â Azrielâs tone borders on teasing, his expression shifting into one of exaggerated contemplation. âSomething like⊠âBeautiful stranger, here you areâŠââ
âThatâs enough!â You interrupt, your face turning into an even deeper shade of pink, caught somewhere between mortification and laughter.Â
This time, itâs Azriel holding back a chuckle. His lips curl into a small smirk, seeing the blush that lights up your face. He quite likes that shade on youâlikes being the one to bring it out even more. âSoâŠâ
You keep your gaze straight ahead. âSoâŠ?â
Azriel leans in, his voice low and warm, making your stomach flutter. âDo you sing that song for just anyone too?â
âNo,â you let out a laugh, your hands cup your face but thereâs no hiding the blush there. âIâm afraid that song was just for you.â
âGood,â he murmurs.
You turn to look at him, realizing his gaze had never left you. Your hands drop back to the porch railing. âYeah?â you whisper, your own heart pounding, not sure what it was you were asking.
But Azriel seems to understand anyway. He can feel what youâre feeling, now fully aware and attentive to the bond humming between you.
âYeah,â he breathes, his smirk softening into a genuine smile, his heart finally at ease.Â
A gentle warmth surges through the bond, reaching every shadowed corner of his heart and wrapping around his soul. Itâs a feeling he could get used to, one heâs spent centuries longing and yearning for. Itâs a feeling heâs searched for in all the wrong places, enduring the heavy weight of heartbreak after heartbreak.
But now, with you, he feels the weight begin to lift. After all the empty falls and broken promises, itâs finally, finally safe for him to fall.
a/n: you can't tell me Az & Cas don't have dad sneezes lol. Anyway, I really wanted to write a fic where Az finally feels safe with someone because he deserves to. I hope you enjoyed this <3

Original Post
âSuch an adorable little one,â you coo softly, the newborn held delicately and carefully in your arms, swaddled in the baby blue blankets you and John had bought among your other gifts for your fellow Duke and Duchess. âHe looks so much like you, Iâm in awe.â
Your friend laughs lightly, sipping on her drink. With a soft sigh, she leans closer towards you. The party is in full swing, so many other nobles mingling and networking, but thankfully you and your friend have your own little corner for now and everyone has already congratulated her and her husband.
âSo,â she begins, her eyes flickering towards where both of you twoâs husbands are speaking. The smiles on their faces are clearly happy, though you arenât surprised; John had mentioned that heâs already friends with the Duke during the carriage ride. âSo. What about you and Duke Price, hm? Any surprises we should prepare for?â
Ah. You had been dreading this.
You sigh, shaking your head. Though the smile returns as you gaze at the napping baby, so small and precious in your arms. With you friendâs permission, you gently kiss his tiny little fists. âNot at all. We are happy as we are.â
And itâs not as if you are lying by any means, oh no. You are happy. Life as Duchess was far, far much better than you had expected itâd be, a lot less restrictive than you had prepared for it to be.
ButâŠ
You canât lie to yourself. Youâve been feeling a sense of discontent from the very second you stepped into the gala venue. Perhaps for even longer, though it hadnât been especially felt until this moment. Not until you held this baby in your arms.
You want a baby, too, you had realized. Motherhood. A child all yours, calling you momma and toddling into your arms. You had been unable to stop yourself from feeling the little bud of jealousy towards your friend, because you knew youâd likely never experience such a thing due to your unique situation.
John has his own partners whom he loves. You werenât among that list, and you didnât particularly enjoy the idea of having sex with another man with the potential risk of your parents, or anyone else, asking for a paternity test because you know someone would ask. Your mother, probably; she was always warning you not to whore yourself out, and your father didnât even need to say anything-
âMy dear?â
Johnâs concerned voice pulls you out of your thoughts, his hand gentle on your elbow, and itâs only then you realize you had been staring down at the baby with such sadness, so not befitting of such a beautiful gala. So you shake your head, clearing your thoughts, and turn to him and your friend's husband.
When the baby squirms, you coo softly and hand him back to your friends, gentle and careful. That's when you turn to John, giving him a simple smile. "Yes, Your Grace?"
The worry remains on his face, less visible however, and his eyes look over you carefully. Your friends are too busy with their son and showing him off to care about what you two are saying in the corner heâs led you to. "Are you alright?â
As if youâd ever tell him what the issue is. You donât want to make John feel pressured into this, of all things. Youâd rather be divorced than do so, and that should speak volumes on its own.
Itâs a silly want, anyways. You have everything you could possible need right now, married and stable. You arenât about to ruin it with your own two hands.
So you nod your head, and brush away all thoughts of a little baby cradled in your arms. âYes, I am. I was just lost in thought. Shall we return to the party?â
John observes you for a few seconds more, and then he sighs and nods. âVery well. Would you do me the honor of this dance, my dear Duchess?â
Between the dazzling lights and Johnâs arms, you can almost forget the lingering desire.
But over the next few days after the gala, it becomes clear to John- to all your the men that something is terribly bothering you. There is a lingering sadness around you so profound even your maids have sensed it, wondering if perhaps you and the Duke have finally had your first fight⊠but he looks even more more worried and confused than them. You werenât mad at anyone, that much he could tell, but he didnât understand the heartache plaguing you.
ââŠare you sick, my lady?â Kyle asks you one day, placing down a tray of fresh desserts. Your favorites, all made by Johnny himself, yet you barely flick a look towards it.
âNot at all. Thank you, Kyle, but Iâm afraid I canât eat anything at the moment.â Your reply is soft, patient, as it always is, but the furrow in your brows remain and your frown deepens. Kyle hates it. He hates it so, so much. Youâve even stopped taking your usual break-walks, staying inside your room and asking for nothing in particular.
âMy lady,â he presses on, voice softer. Comes to stand close to you, and holds his elbow out. âMaybe a walk, then? You look tired. Some sun might do you good- or a picnic? I can pack the desserts and-â
You avoid his eyes and look away, shaking your head. âThank you, but my answerâs the same, Kyle. Iâd just⊠like to be left alone, please. Could I trouble you to also inform John I wonât be joining him for dinner tonight?â
You are simply glad you managed to hide the little paper youâd been writing on before he came in. Baby names, for the babies youâd never have. It certainly didnât help make your mood better, but you couldnât help yourself. Looking at John, or any of them, also made you feel guilty anew.
ââŠnot a problem, my lady. Iâll leave the desserts here for you just in case.â
Several days later, itâs Johnny who comes to you. You are alone in the conservatory, trying hard to get over this stupid, lingering feeling. Itâs silly, you know it is, butïżœïżœ ugh.
Johnny says nothing even when you call his name out with a questioning tone, and much to your shock, he kneels down to take your hands in his. Itâs so wholly inappropriate, and you look around in fear of anyone seeing.
âNo oneâs around, mâlady,â Johnny shakes his head, not letting your hands go yet.
âJohnny-â
âNo oneâs around.â He repeats, firmly, and his eyes gaze at you. âMâlady. Have we made ye angry? Has anyone made you upset? Is my food not to your liking?â
âJohnnyâŠâ you sigh, shaking your head. Inwardly, you scold yourself for bothering everyone like this. This should have been your issue alone to solve and hide. âNo, no. Nothing like that. I just need some time alone, in general.â
âBut why-â
âNo particular reason.â You quickly cut him off, gently pulling your hands away. âPlease, Johnny. Iâll get better soon, promise. But I just⊠need time.â
But the desire, the longing, still remains. You canât even confide in anyone, so you also feel painfully lonely on top of everything else. John is still searching, still trying to find what or whoâs made you like this, but not even your closest maids are of help.
Still, while you wished to wallow your misery away in your rooms and office, you didnât have much choice when youâd received an invitation to the opera troupe funded by the Price duchy; making an appearance was a must, and unfortunately John had a very important meeting that day so Simon is the one to accompany you.
âYouâve been sad lately.â Simon doesnât beat around the bush, all the lights focused on the stage so you are both draped in shadows, hidden from sight.
You turn to him, a refusal on your lips already-
âNo.â He shakes his head. âYou arenât just tired, Duchess. You are sad. Everyone can see it, and itâs making us worried. All of us.â He adds, not letting you latch onto your usual excuse. Performance ignored, his entire attention is on you.
And you are just- too tired. Ashamed of yourself, you sigh.
âItâs awful of meâŠâ your whisper, bottom lip quivering. âI-⊠I want a baby, Simon.â You admit, so softly and quietly you donât look at his reaction to see if heâd even heard you in the first place. You shouldnât be telling him of all people your issues, but- you canât help yourself. âA child. I want to experience motherhood, but- I donât, I refuse to put such a burden on John, or get in the way between all of you again-â
You ramble on, not meeting his eyes. Your hands are tembling around the mask youâd taken off, holding it in your lap.
Simon?
Simon canât take his eyes off your stomach. You. You, pregnant; swollen and glowing with a child. Maybe children, even. Their children. His. He canât believe this is what has had you so upset for so long; did you think they- John- would say no to you?
âDarling, â The nickname slips out; he couldnât help himself. He is glad the no one is paying attention to them, in the higher rows. Simon laces your pinkies together, raising your hand to kiss your knuckles, silencing your worried rambling. âDarling. Let us return home. Staying here isnât doing you any good. Tonight, I want you to let Kyle spoil you with a warm bath, and for you to eat and then sleep. Rest. Tomorrow, weâll speak. Iâll inform the troupe leader you werenât feeling too well.â
âI- I⊠speak about what? What?â
Simon simply ushers you out, to the awaiting carriage. He doesnât answer any of your questions, even when you pout and the it makes your lipstick glisten to prettily, though if you can feel that his hands are inappropriately tight around your waist, you simply blame it on your tightened corset.
At home, you are still confused. Simon is acting off, staring at you with a look that makes you all flustered, but you donât protest when Kyle gently leads you away.
Youâll get your answers tomorrow, you are sure. But in the meantimeâŠ
âShe wants a baby, John,â Simon groans, repeating the words again. His jacket is thrown off to the side, sleeves rolled up his elbows. Even from here, he can see how John eyes them appreciatively. âA baby, John. Seeing her pregnant-â
Another groan, but the one comes from between Johnâs thighs. Johnny, hands tied behind his back with Simonâs belt because the second he found out what the issue he was so, so ready to go and beg you to let him fix it. A bairn is what you want, a bairn is what heâll give you- chunky, adorable, and hopefully looking like you.
John had to hold him back, though. He wants nothing more than to do the same, kiss you breathless and promise heâll give you as many as you want, but he also knows you need a clear, rested head before he speaks with you.
The thought of seeing your pregnant, though, has his fist tightening in Johnnyâs hair.
âI know. Fuck, I know, Si. Tomorrow, Iâll speak to her.â

Hi Mae!
I love your writing so much and think about it maybe too often haha. Today I fell and sliced the back of my hand open so I had to go wait 4 hours at the ER to get it sutured back together and I thought it might be a sort of funny scenario to write about with the marauders where R just walks up to them covered in blood like âheyy who wants to drive me to the ERâ and is pretty chill in demeanour until the reality of having a hole in her hand sets in once they clean her up. I went into shock then, lost my hearing for a few minutes which was scary, but luckily I had a someone nearby who could help. Of course no worries if you donât feel like it, I appreciate you and I hope you have a lovely day!âĄ
Thanks for requesting! I hope your hand is feeling better lovely <3
cw: blood, mention of razors (unrelated to blood)
poly!marauders x fem!reader ⥠788 words
âHey, Sirius?âÂ
Sirius screws the brush of his nail polish back into the bottle. âYeah?âÂ
âAre you busy?âÂ
âNot anymore.â He gets up from the bed, wandering towards your voice in the bathroom. âWhatâs up, gorgeous? You need something?âÂ
Sirius stalls when he finds you. Youâre standing there with a dissatisfied frown on your face, your hand a basin of blood held in front of you thatâs overflowing into the sink.Â
âMaybe a ride to A&E?â you ask. âIf youâre free.âÂ
âWhat the hell happened?â Sirius goes to you. He tries to take your hand, but you move it away.Â
âWait, your nailsââÂ
âIâm not really worried about my nails right now, babe.â He holds you by the wrist, turning the faucet on to a gentle flow before bringing your hand underneath it. The blood washes away quickly, and Sirius blocks your view of the cut, leaning down to see it. âHowâd you manage this?âÂ
âI was just opening my new razorsââÂ
âRazors?âÂ
âIt wasnât even the razors that did it,â you say, a laugh somewhere in your voice. Your raised voices have drawn attention from the rest of the house. Remus and then James appear in the doorway. âIt was the plastic it comes in. Surprisingly sharp.âÂ
âWhatâs going on?â asks James.Â
âShe would like to know,â Sirius informs him, âif itâs convenient for any of us to drive her to A&E.âÂ
You roll your eyes. âAlright, you donât have to say it like that. I just mean that itâs not so dire, Iâm hardly bleeding out.âÂ
âYou might be!âÂ
âWhatâd you do, love?â Remus moves forward to see, he and Sirius now clustered on either side of you, each closer to your own hand than you are.Â
âShe managed to injure herself with plastic packaging.â
âOkay. Again, the tone is a bit much,â you say.Â
âAw, sweetheart.â Jamesâ arms wrap around your waist. He smudges a kiss onto your cheek. âAre you okay?âÂ
âYeah,â you tell him, audibly softening at the affection, âit doesnât even hurt that bad, itâs only stingingâŠâ You go quiet.Â
Sirius glances back at you, and youâre staring between him and Remus, your hand in your view for the first time. You look suddenly paler.Â
âHey, baby.â Siriusâ voice draws the attention of the other two to whatâs happened. He steps in front of your hand again, squeezing up the length of your arm. âYouâre okay.âÂ
âItâsâŠâ You stare at where you had been for a moment longer, then snap your vision to the side. Youâre breathing a tad faster. âGod, sorry. I feel sort of sick.âÂ
âTake some breaths, dove, youâre alright.â Remus holds your hand close to his chest, shielding it from your view as he reaches into a nearby drawer for bandages. âWeâre just going to stop the bleeding and then take you to A&E, you donât have to do anything.âÂ
âAll of you?âÂ
âWhy?â James gives your middle a light squeeze. âAre there some of us youâd rather not have there?â
âI knew she had favorites.â Sirius grins. âCruel. Weâre only trying to be there for you, gorgeous.âÂ
You smile a little bit for their sake. Youâre not sure either of them believe it, but James gives you a thankful kiss nonetheless.Â
âKeep breathing,â he reminds you, big hand rubbing up and down your abdomen. âYouâre really doing so well. I was surprised by how calm you seemed a minute ago.âÂ
âYou should have heard her before you got here.â Sirius squints his eyes at you playfully. âShe wouldnât let me touch her hand because she was worried itâd mess up my nail polish.âÂ
âSweetheart,â James laughs, giving you another fond squeeze. âReally?âÂ
âPriorities, babe,â Sirius chides you.Â
âAlright,â says Remus. You feel a kiss on your knuckles, and then heâs turning around, your bandaged hand still held protectively between both of his. âIs anyone going to warm the car, or do I have to do everything?âÂ
You nod, chastened, and start towards the door, but youâre dragged back by three pairs of hands.Â
âI mean anyone not injured, dove.â Remusâ voice is heavy with loving exasperation.Â
âSee what weâve been dealing with? Itâs a two man job.â Sirius squeezes your shoulder on his way past, presumably going to warm the car. James says something about getting your shoes and follows behind.
You give Remus a woeful look. He tsks, folding you into a hug. âDid you really prioritize Siriusâ nail polish over your bleeding hand?â he asks in a murmur.Â
You mush your cheek to his chest. âOnly for a minute.âÂ
Remus is quiet, but his amused breath fans over the top of your head as he brings his lips down for a kiss.

Nugget Update (MV1)
sumary: y/n's always giddy after getting a nugget update, sure she loves her best boy, but it also has something to do with the cat sitter sending the updates
driver!reader x cat sitter!max verstappen -> habs incoming... series masterlist
cw: not fia approved words, a bit of lance hate (I don't actually hate him), mutual pinning, the grid teasing the reader, lot of appearances from the reader's cat, kissing, kinda mean!reader (to the grid)
wc: 4.1k
a/n: this is my first time writing in 2nd person so bear with me. also, I low key hate this and it may be shit. not proof read!
âWell arenât you a ball of sunshine?â A voice called out, disturbing the peace - or the closest thing to peace you could have near a Formula 1 track.
Your gaze snapped up, eyes narrowing as you took in the man standing on the entry of the RedBull garage. âHello, Charles,â you replied, a teasing bite obviously heard in your voice as you crossed your arms over your chest. âI know you wanted to experience what a successful garage looks like but I thought Ferrari had a better hold on you.â
Charles laughs, his eyes crinkling as his lips stretch into a smile. Teasing Charles was always a fun time but thatâs all it was, just a bit of fun. It never stretched into something meaner, just two people showing affection by teasing each other.
Charles had been your very first real friend on the grid. The first to offer his hand with a smile and genuinely mean it. The first to congratulate you on a win after getting out of the car or the first to say that the next race would be better. Really, he was your best friend, but you would never tell him that or it would go to his head.
âFunny, very funny.â He said, his accent thick. His eyes slid around the motor home until finally meeting your own. âLot of drivers are going out for drinks, came by to invite you.â
âI donât Charles,â you started to say, going through your mental list of excuses, searching for the best one to use to avoid this social interaction.
âOh come on!â He whined, rolling his eyes. He gave you a look that let you know you could stop thinking about an excuse because he wasnât going to be buying it. âWe wonât stay that long and itâs night race tomorrow so you donât need to wake up at the crack of dawn.â
You pressed your lips together, the lip gloss previously applied making them slide against each other easily.Â
Charles kissed his teeth, nodding his head along. Fine, heâll play the game. âSome of the WAGâs are coming as well.â
âAre you really trying to lure me out by promising female company?â
âIs it working?â
âEh,â you shrugged your shoulders. âWill you pay my tab?â
Charles scoffed. âPay your tab?â He asked, sounding as if you had asked him for his firstborn. âYouâre filthy rich! You have a bigger salary than me!â
âYeah, they do pay world champions a bit extra, comes with the title.â You replied, grinning at him, a wide teasing grin, your eyes twinkling.Â
âFine whatever, Iâll pay your tab.â He said, raising his hands in surrender. âNow go take that suit off and shower, you look disgusting.â
âYou look like a trash can threw you up!â
âIt threw me up because it saw you!â Charles shouted back in response, his back already turned to you as he walked away, back to the Ferrari garage.Â
And thatâs how you ended up in the bar, an hour later. Squished in the not too comfortable and definitely not meant to sit so many people, booth. With Georgeâs girlfriend Carmen on your left, and Pierreâs girlfriend Kika on your right, and deep in conversation with both of them.Â
You feel your phone vibrate under your hand on the table, and the screen lights up, showing off your wallpaper, a picture of your beloved cat Nugget.
You tune off from the conversation the moment the message arrives, grabbing your phone and pulling it in towards you. Your face lights up, lips stretching into a smile as your eyes focus on the sender ID. Maxie.
Or rather Max. The very cute guy who was your cat sitter whenever you were out and about in the world, chasing the racing track.Â
With a quick move of your fingers, you swipe up, opening your phone and going into the message app. Fingers quickly tapping along the screen of your phone as you type out your reply.
With a smile you closed the messages app, pressing your fingers against the button on the side of your phone, watching the screen go black before setting it face down onto the table. As you looked back up, Landoâs amused yet teasing expression caught your eye.
You leaned forward against the table, pressing your hands to the wooden surface as you attempted to get a bit closer to the driver on the other side of the table. âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âOh nothing,â he said with a laugh. âJust wondering who youâre texting, thatâs all.â He intertwined his fingers, elbows pressed against the table and leaned forward as well. âYou were all grumpy cat but then you get a message and suddenly youâre all smiles.â
âGrumpy cat?â You scoff, rolling your eyes at the McLaren driver. âIâm not a grumpy cat. And for the record, that was Nuggetâs babysitter and he was sending me a picture of Nugget.â
Lando laughs, thereâs a twinkle in his eyes that tells you he wants to say more but he holds himself back. âCan I see? I havenât seen the orange gremlin in so long.â
âThatâs very mean,â you say, opening your phone to show him the picture, that Max had sent you. âNugget would never say that about you.â
âThatâs because Nugget canât speak.â He looks at the screen and his lips twist upward in a smirk. âWhoâs Maxie?â
You breathe out through your nose, teeth digging into your bottom lip. When you speak your voice is sharp, it leaves no room for questioning things or an invite to ask more questions. âThe cat sitter.â
âIâm sure thatâs all he is.â Lando laughs when you show him your middle finger before settling back into your seat and returning to the previously abandoned conversation with the two WAGâs.
The race went pretty smoothly, as always. Starting from pole, keeping the lead the whole race and with a 20s gap to car in P2. Everything after that was pretty much a blur, the interviews, partying through the night with the grid and boarding the jet early in the morning.
The sun already started setting by the time you made it to Monaco. With a sigh you rummaged through your bag, blindly feeling around the stuff inside before your fingers finally wrapped around the keys.
Opening the apartment door you walked inside, gently laying down your suitcase as your eyes settled on the scene in your living room. Right there, laying on your couch, in deep sleep, and cuddling your cat is Max Verstappen.Â
His hair had fallen over his eyes and the position heâs in looks rather uncomfortable, youâre sure his body will be aching when he wakes up. His chest was raising and falling with each breath he took, little sighs slipping past his lips. Nugget was cuddled up to him, curled in a ball.
You looked at him for a few moments before starting to move around as quietly as possible, not wanting to wake him up.Â
Max had been cat sitting for you for a while now. Half of last season and now half of this one so almost a year. He was a sweet, kinda shy, mostly nerdy guy you ran into in a coffee shop and spilled his coffee. You offered to buy him a new one and he joined you for the coffee and you got to talking when he said he was looking for a job so you offered him to become your pet sitter.
At that point you really did need someone to look after your cat while you were gone, since you had broken up with your ex who usually took care of Nugget while you were away. And you couldnât leave Nugget with your parents since your father was allergic to cats.
Now, your best friend who had been working in a different country had returned to Monaco and said sheâd be more than happy to look after Nugget - but you wanted to keep Max around.Â
Already having grown used to coming home after a race weekend to find him there, just existing in your space.
Nuggetâs whiskers twitch, his eyes opening and he pulls himself away from Max, stretches out and then trots over to you, rubbing his head against your leg affectionately while purring. He let out a happy, albeit a bit too loud, meow when you picked him up and on the other side of the room Max began stirring from his sleep.
He opened his eyes, a bit confused, and rubbed his knuckles against his eyes to wake up, blinking a few times as his eyes adjusted to the light filling up the room.Â
âYouâre back,â he says, his voice is gentle, still sleepy and a bit quiet. His eyes meet yours and he offers you a sweet smile that has you immediately smiling back at him. âDidnât mean to fall asleep, sorry about that.â
âOh no, itâs no problem,â you reply, running your hand over Nuggetâs fur as the cat lay happily in your arms. âYou can use the guest bedroom if youâre tired, you know. The couch may be expensive but that doesnât mean itâs comfortable for sleep.â
âI didnât want to overstep,â Max said, pulling himself up into a sitting position. You approached the couch and sat down, the cat nestling in your lap and purring in content. Max smiled, reaching out his hand and petting Nugget.
âNonsense Max, youâre not overstepping.â You cut him off, leaving no room for argument. You always told him to feel at ease in your apartment, that he was welcome to any food in the fridge and free to use the guest room as he pleased but even after all this time there was still a slight air of awkwardness backed up by the fear of going a bit too far.
Maxâs eyes settled on you, your own focused on your cat so you didnât notice him looking. He watched the way you cooed at Nugget, asking if he was a good boy while you were away and petting him gently, and his lips stretched into a small, careful smile.
He spoke before thinking. The words left his mouth before he even finished the thought inside of his head. âI watched the race,â he said, and your eyes instantly snapped up to meet his. He swallowed, already too deep to back down. âIt - â he licked his lips, trying to decide his next words, feeling like his tongue had tied itself up in a knot. âYou were spectacular. It was lovely ⊠simply lovely.â
You let out a breath, the corners of your mouth twisting upwards and you gave him a thankful look. Max swore he could feel his heart beating in his throat, and felt his cheeks heat up. âThank you,â you said, your voice gentle, holding a comforting tone. âIâm glad you enjoyed it. And itâs nice - knowing you watched.â
âIt is?â
You bit your lip, teeth scraping against you bottom lip as you looked at him, your brain running faster than the Sauber (like itâs hard) as you tried to come up with a response. âItâs kind of comforting,â you finally said, after what felt like a small forever.
You hummed, looking down at your nails. âI was thinking about bringing Nugget with me to the next race. Itâs been a while since he was in the paddock.â
âOh,â Max said, an edge of confusion noticeable in the tone of his voice. âDoes that mean that you donât need me coming over next week?â
âActually, I was hoping you would come with.â You say, before you can talk yourself out of making the proposition.
Max tilts his head to the side, kind of like a confused cat and you try your best not to giggle at the mental image. âIâm not sure Iâm following.â
âIf you wanted to attend the Grand Prix,â you tell him, running the edge of one of your nails along your skin. âCuzâ Iâm still gonna need someone to look after Nugget, and you do that in general so this would just be an added bonus of traveling.â
Max is silent for a few moments and you think heâll decline. You wouldn't fully blame him if he did, you know what the pressure of the paddock can be like. Youâre about to open your mouth, tell him that ânever mind, it was a stupid idea anywayâ and put him out of the trouble of finding a polite way to decline when he finally speaks.Â
âI suppose, if you want me to then yeah, Iâll come along to watch Nugget.â He says, trying to ignore the nervous feeling building up in his chest when you smile at him, a wide happy smile that makes him instantly smile back.
âGreat!â You said, the excitement evident in your voice. âSomeone from the team will contact you in a while to arrange the tickets and leave the rest to me.â Max nods, he doesnât trust himself to speak, not with the way his throat is closing up and it makes him feel like he canât breathe.
âLook at you all giggly,â Charles teased, gently pushing your shoulder with his hand. He wiggled his eyebrows, a laugh slipping past his lips as you glared at him.
âCharles, why donât you turn around and flash your pretty face to the crowd.â You said, rolling your eyes. You looked at the stadium full of people who were shouting out for their favorite drivers, waving banners and cheering happily. You smiled towards the stadium and lifted your hand up, waving your fingers to the public. âGive them a wave.â
âSee, I always knew you thought I was pretty,â Charles replied, waving at the public. The two of you and the rest of the grid were in a wagon, going around the track for the drivers parade, so essentially you were stuck with him for at least five more minutes. âNow, do tell whoâs got you smiling like that.â
âIs it Maxie?â Lando asked, the teasing tone evident in his voice. He pushed himself closer to you and Charles, inserting himself into the conversation.Â
âDidnât your mom teach you not to eavesdrop?âÂ
âNo, no!â Charles said, shaking his head as he waved his hand dismissively as you, his full attention now focused on Lando. âWhoâs Maxie?â
Lando smiled at him, his eyes sparkling with mischief. âThe cat sitter,â he said in a sing-song kind of voice.Â
âThe one you brought to your garage?â The Ferrari driver asked, his attention back on you. âThe pretty one.â
âHold up!â Lando almost shouted, raising his hands. âYou brought him with you to the Grand Prix?!â
âI didnât ⊠well I did bring him.â You said with a sigh, there was no escaping this now. âBut itâs not like that. Heâs here to watch Nugget.â
âAnd for you to watch him - because boy that is one good arm candy.â
âCharles, your homosexual is showing,â you warned.
âBut youâre not denying it,â Charles noted, giving you a smirk.
You rolled your eyes at him but finally gave in. âYes, Iâm not denying it.â
You stepped back into the motor home, your eyes immediately searching for Max and finally you found him talking to your lead engineer. As you approached the two you could start to hear their conversation and quickly realized they were talking about how the car worked and what went on behind the scenes at a Grand Prix. You found it cute that Max was interested in that.
His eyes met yours and his face lit up, the corners of his mouth twisting upwards into a smile. âYouâre back!â He said, âAfter terrorizing everyone around and getting pets, Nugget decided to settle down for a nap. Heâs in your driver's room.â
Max gave you a wink after saying that and you had to hold in a giggle. You excused yourself to go to your driverâs room, with Max following behind you. The first thing you noticed when you went inside was Nugget, curled up on the massage bed and sleeping without a care.
The next thing that grabbed your attention was a dozen pastries lined up on a small table next to the couch. They were all individually wrapped in tissues.
âMax,â you said, picking up one of the pastries and unwrapping it. âI really did mean only one pastry, you know?â You bit into the chocolate filled pastry, moaning at the taste of a treat you werenât usually allowed to have when it was race week. âMy trainer will strangle me if he sees.â
âI swear, no one saw anything.â Max said, shuffling over to the couch and sitting down. âI was sneakier than Nugget when heâs stealing my food.â
âOh, now thatâs a very serious claim.â You told him with a laugh, his own laugh echoing back. You picked up one of the wrapped pastries and offered it to him. âTake one, or five. Thereâs no way Iâm eating it all.â
He takes the pastry youâre offering him, his fingers brushing against your own as he takes it from your hand, sending sparks of electricity down your spine. After a second of hesitation you sit down next to him, the two of you eating the treats in comfortable silence.
His thigh nudges against yours and you turn to face him, finding that heâs already looking at you. He smiles and you donât hesitate to smile back.
The practices go great, P2 in FP1, P1 in FP2 and P1 in FP3.Â
The qualifying is where a slight setback shows up, with quali being ended early due to a crash and a red flag, putting you in P10 for the start of the race tomorrow. Â
Once the car had rolled back into the pits you wasted no time getting out, putting the steering wheel back into place before storming into your driverâs room.Â
You pulled your helmet off, fingers curling into the bottom of your balaclava as you pulled it off, throwing it next to your helmet before bringing your hands up to smooth down your hair.Â
âIâm not in the fucking mood, Pepe.â You said without turning around, assuming it was your race engineer coming to talk about the outcome of qualifying. âFucking Lance and his fucking money made seat - if that little frog screws up another quali, Iâll be the one crashing him out.â
âIâm not Pepe,â the other person in the room says and you instantly turn around, your eyes wide as they meet Maxâs blue ones. âAnd Iâm certainly glad Iâm not Lance.â
You looked him up and down, eyes trailing over his figure. You took notice of Nugged, cuddled up in his arms and looked at you curiously, and reached your hand out to pet the cat, a long breath slipping past your lips.Â
âSorry,â you said with a shrug of your shoulders. âI didnât really mean for you to hear that.â
Max barely heard what you were saying. Too distracted by the sight of you for his brain to properly register your words. Your skin was slightly glistening with sweat, an imprint from where your helmet and balaclava had dug into your skin still visible on your flushed cheeks. Your messy hair, and your chest raising and falling with each breath you took as you were still working on catching up your breath.
Max blinked, finally snapping out of his thoughts and focusing his attention back to what you were saying. âThey should have let you finish the lap.âÂ
âI agree but sadly thatâs not how it works.â
Max nodded along, not really knowing what to say to that so he switched to the next topic. âI ran into your friend. He invited you, and me, out for drinks. I think it would be nice to go, you seem like you need a drink.â
âYeah, I definitely do.â You replied, taking Nugget from his arms and into your own, stroking down the catâs body. âWhich friend?â
âUh,â Max started, thinking of a way to describe the guy since he couldnât remember his name. âWears red, pretty, sounds French.â
You laughed, smiling at him. âThatâs Charles. I hope you didnât tell him he sounds French, he gets offended by that.â
âThen itâs great I kept it to myself.â
You laughed in reply, putting Nugget down to the floor, the cat immediately moving to a cozy corner and curling up into a ball on the floor, shutting his eyes. âThe hotel is right next to the track, you can take Nugget back while I shower and then we can go - if you want to.â
âSounds like a deal,â Max replied with a smile.
You showered and put on a clean set of clothes just in time to meet Max after he finished dropping Nugget back to the hotel, leaving him with toys, food and water. The two of you made your way to the bar to join the rest of the grid for a night out.Â
Some of the drivers were playing pool while their girlfriends were engrossed in a conversation so that left you and Max sitting together, sharing drinks and talking.
âI just âŠâ you started, cracking your fingers. âI donât know, this quali really messed up my mood and I was riding on such a high after the practices going well. It all feels shit now.â
âMaybe you just need more motivation for the race.â Max offered, drinking the rest of the liquor from his glass in one go.Â
âYou have something in mind, Maxie?â You asked, the nickname slipping past your lips without a thought now that youâve had a few drinks.Â
âHow about a kiss if you get on the podium?â He said, his voice suggestive. Normally he never would have dared to say something like that but the alcohol courage really worked wonders.Â
Your eyes widened, clearly not expecting him to be so bold or to suggest that. He took your reaction as a bad sign, immediately straightening up as a wave of dread quickly sobered him up.
âIâm sorry,â he gasped out, the expression on his face shifting into a panicked one. âThat was stupid. It was thoughtless. It was -â
âA great motivation,â you cut him off, putting a finger up against his lips to silence him. âIt was a great motivation.â
His cheeks burned as his eyes met yours. He looked so vulnerable, his bright eyes impossibly wide. âYeah?â
âYeah!â
âOne more corner to go but youâre in the clear,â Pepeâs voice echoed over the radio. You blinked, your eyes focused on the track before you, the checkered flag already visible along with your team gathering in the front. âThatâs P1, Y/n. Phenomenal drive today, you deserved it!â
âThank you,â you said, your voice breathless as you moved your hands, going through the last corner and speeding towards the finish line. âThank you, Pepe.â You repeated, swallowing your spit. âIt was lovely, simply lovely.â
You put the car into P1, getting out and posing for a picture on top of your car. You could hear the shouts, the cheers, the celebration. You took off your helmet, ripping off your balaclava and putting them both into the car before turning around to face the team, eyes searching for a particular face.Â
Finally, you spotted Max. Standing besides your engineer, a proud expression on his face as he looked at you with a wide smile. You didnât hesitate, feet moving before you could think and then you were in front of him, grabbing his shirt and pulling him down, smashing your lips into his.
The kiss was desperate, both of having waited long enough for it. He wrapped his arms around you, the best he could with the fence between you, kissing you back with need.Â
You finally pulled away when you felt your lungs burning from the lack of oxygen, learning your forehead against his. Nothing else mattered, not the public, not the team, not the celebration. Only him, finally yours.
âSimply lovely, right?â You asked, your voice breathless.
âSimply lovely!â Max repeated back to you, before kissing you once again. And he really did mean it - everything was simply lovely.

same book, different chapters
synopsis: an ordinary evening takes a turn when katsuki expresses what you've always known but never expected to hear.
pairing: timeskip!bakugou katsuki x f!reader
being with katsuki is a lesson in unspoken understanding. you knew who he is long before you started dating himâloud, brash, and not the type to share his feelings openly.
but it didnât take long to realize thereâs so much more to him than that. his love is quiet, reserved, and shown in the details:
how he pulls you out of the way of a passing car, or how he remembers the smallest things, like your favorite kind of tea or that you prefer your coffee without sugar.
and that is enough for you. mostly.
you didnât expect him to be the kind of boyfriend who says "I love you" with ease. katsuki isnât like that. it isnât something you hold against him either.
but every now and then, a small part of you wonders what it would be like to hear him say itâto hear those three words slip past his lips in the same way they had from yours.
you say it first, a quiet âI love youâ in the middle of a peaceful night when the world outside feels still.
his response comes in the shape of hugging you tighter, securing you in his arms. however, he doesnât say it back, and you donât expect him to. you donât need him to.
still, there are times when you find yourself holding your breath, wondering if one day heâll actually verbalize it.
it isnât that you doubt his feelings. katsuki isnât one to waste time on things or people he doesnât care about.
you know how much he cares by the way he silently takes care of you, always putting you first in his own way, even when his words are rough around the edges.
itâs just that sometimes, words have a way of making things feel more real.
tonight is one of those easy evenings you cherishâone where you donât have to think too much about anything. the two of you are in your kitchen, making dinner together, though âtogetherâ is generous.
youâre doing most of the work while katsuki stands next to you, arms crossed, casting a critical eye over everything you do.
âyouâre putting too much salt,â he says, the frown on his face making you smile.
âpretty sure this is the exact amount the recipe says to use,â you reply, amused at how serious he always gets when it comes to food.
âtch, that recipeâs wrong. I couldâve made this better with my eyes closed.â
âthen why donât you?â you tease, turning your head to glance at him. his gaze is sharp as usual, but the small curve in the corner of his lips betrays him.
âmaybe Iâll cook next time,â he grumbles, looking away like the very idea of giving in bothers him.
you laugh softly, enjoying the banter. this is something you love about himâhow even in these simple moments, his presence fills the space with a sense of ease.
thereâs no pressure to be anything other than yourselves, even when his blunt honesty clashes with your more relaxed approach.
as you stir the pot, you canât help but let your thoughts wander back to the three words. you know katsuki isnât the type to say things until heâs ready, and you respect that.
but part of you is curiousâwould it ever come naturally to him, or would it always be something unspoken between the two of you?
still, as you stand there, the warmth of his steady presence beside you, you realize that maybe youâre okay with it remaining unspoken. katsuki shows his love in ways that donât need words to validate them.
and then, without warning, you feel his arms wrap around your waist from behind, his chin resting on your shoulder. you freeze for a moment, caught off-guard.
âkatsuki?â you ask, your voice soft, as you lean into him instinctively.
he doesnât answer right away, just holds you there. his touch isnât hesitant, but it is different from the usual casual touches youâve grown used to.
âyouâre annoying sometimes,â he mutters, voice low in your ear.
you chuckle, relaxing further into his hold. âI know.â
thereâs silence for a beat, and then: âbut I love you anyway, idiot.â
you blink, unsure if youâve heard him correctly. you turn your head slightly, trying to see his face, but he buries it against your neck, hiding his expression. âdid you justâ?â
âdonât make a big deal out of it,â he mumbles, voice suddenly gruff, though you can hear the embarrassment beneath the words.
a smile breaks across your face, warmth spreading through your chest. you didnât expect it, but that makes it all the more special. he isnât saying it because the moment demands it.
he isnât saying it because youâre waiting. he says it because he wants to, because he feels it.
âIâm not,â you reply, trying to sound nonchalant but failing miserably as your happiness bubbles up in your voice. âbutâŠI love you too.â
you feel his grip tighten around you and a kiss pressed to your shoulder.

My mom was an abusive alcoholic for most of my early childhood.
She got sober but surrounded us with people from AA who she knew were sex offenders and she didn't protect me from them because she thought being sober made them good people who wouldn't hurt me.
She got married multiple times and prioritized her partners over me, even lying to have me hospitalized when she wanted to elope with husband #2, and she let him hit me.
She repeatedly voluntarily put me into foster care or the care of family members growing up because she couldn't handle having a disabled queer kid, especially with her drinking and mental health problems.
She made me drop out of school because she didn't want to be awake when I would have to do homeschooling if I homeschooled. Plus, me dropping out meant I could work in her boyfriend's tattoo shop, until the artists (my bosses) relapsed, and gave my aunt hep c, closing the shop and leaving me with nothing.
She promised to let me live with her until I got on my feet when my dad died when I was 17, but put me out on the street 6 months after I turned 18 because husband #3 didn't like my Abyssinian cat or my boyfriend (who his kids/my step sisters had beaten up and stolen Adderall from in highschool)
She basically let me be homeless. She doesn't help me with leaving abusive situations and we've been estranged on and off during my adult life to the point where we stopped talking and when I reached back out, I had another kid she didn't know about and she was onto husband #4.
But she's my lawyer.
She's the only family I have left since my dad's dead and my partner destroyed my relationship with my grandmother (who's so far gone with dementia, she doesn't know who I am)
I'm kinda forced to have a relationship with my mom to protect myself.
Granted, she's doing much better than she was when I was younger. Living overseas and marrying my current step dad mellowed her out.
But yeah... I don't like my mom very much, but I love my parents, and I need their help a lot as single disabled trans parent. So I deal with her mental health symptoms, including narcissistic tendencies (don't come at me, I'm not claiming 'narc abuse ', but she is diagnosed with severe BPD with narcissistic tendencies and it does affect our relationship because she does the whole "I hate you, don't leave me" thing towards me out of habit. She's done it my whole life and it's getting better but it's still a problem. I understand that it's due to her trauma and I don't hold it against her but ngl it hurts.)
So yeah sometimes people's relationships with their parents are complicated but they just have to deal with it. Don't judge people, we're just adults dealing with lifetimes of baggage.

Thoughts on bodyguard!james x reader in a hostage situation? I'm thinking like full Olivia pope bag over the head high stakes hostage situation. Would also love it as an established but secret relationship at this point. (obviously reader can stay unharmed but maybe they advertise as if they've hurt her?) and James and the team come in and get her out....
I looooooove some high sakes hurt/comfort. now, please note I've never seen scandal? but I felt like I knew enough about hostage situations to give it a try? idk, hopefully it turned out okay, and thanks for the prompt!!
bodyguard!James Potter x fem!reader who James [et al.] find [1.5k words]
CW: hostage situation, swearing, NCA = UK's version of the FBI, minor injuries, panic
James could vaguely register the sound of NCA members shouting from up ahead as the team cleared the first floor of the abandoned factory theyâd tracked you to, but he could only focus on the raised hand of Remus - crouched beside James at a stairwell - who was waiting for their signal to move up to the second floor.
James knew three things: he was probably going to throw up whatever was left in his stomach from the last time he could manage to ingest more than a banana or an energy drink, the NCA team was definitely beginning to regret giving James one of their vests, and you were in this building.
Ultimately, that last fact was the most important.Â
James also knew this was what Remus had warned him about; the conflict of interest when he finally admitted to himself (and thus to Remus and Sirius) that he definitely fancied you as more than just his principle.Â
âYouâre not going to be able to remain objective, James.â Remus had said to him. Not unkindly, of course, but James didnât like the insinuation that he was incapable of a) doing his job or b) keeping you safe.
Of course, both of those seem to have been proven true, seeing as you were here; regardless of the fact that Remus insisted this wasnât his fault, regardless of the fact that his hand off of your care to Peter that night had been fucking seamless - it was James who lost you.Â
His ire wasnât due to the fact that heâd lost a principle, nor even that he might lose his job because of it.Â
No, what made him fucking sick with worry and rage was that you were here, you were scared, you were being harmed.
And that is what kept him from barging past Remus - NCA instructions be damned - and burning the entire fucking building down to look for you.
âClear!â An agent called as James heard what he knew to be Siriusâ gait rushing towards them.
âNot on the first floor.â Sirius whispered; out of breath from racing through the building in search of you.Â
âFuck.â James breathed out as he stood, but Sirius - god fucking love him - pushed up against his back and kept him moving.
âWeâll find her, Jamie.â He promised.Â
There were two teams of the NCA unit on the second floor by the time James, Remus, and Sirius made it up the stairs, and thatâs when they heard it.Â
âWhat the FUCK DID YOU DO?!â Someone bellowed, followed by a desperate sound. It was coming from you.
âI didnâtâŠI didnât-â
âYou fuckinâ call that boy of yours? Huh? He come runninâ?â
âFor your sake, he better have our fuckinâ money.â Another voice threatened, and the three of them moved towards the door where the voices were coming from.
James, Remus, and Sirius flattened themselves against the wall next to the door, faces pointed at the NCA agents who were doing the same on the other side. One agent wearing head-to-toe riot gear nodded at their teammate with the battering ram, poised and standing at the ready. At their mark, the team moved.Â
The NCA announced themselves and paired off with the suspects rather quickly whilst Sirius took off after one who tried to flee, Remus right on his heels.Â
The abandoned building had high, exposed ceilings which your captors had suspended thick construction grade cord from.
You were tied to the rope by your wrists, both of which were bound together and suspended over your head as you tried to balance on your tiptoes to the best of your abilities. You were clearly exhausted though, and the moments of relief you managed to garner for your shoulders were brief when your body ultimately went slack one way or the other.Â
James rushed towards you as he surveyed you for any other visible injuries; you were wearing the same clothes heâd dropped you off at your flat in - a pair of jeans and a long sleeved shirt, though your jumper was missing - with the addition of a fucking sack over your head. He was only marginally relieved when couldnât see any blood on your person.
His hands made contact with your waist first when you flinched violently; body swaying furiously as you swung your legs out at him, shrieking in fear.
âHey! Hey, hey, hey. Itâs okay. Youâre okay, angel. Itâs me, itâs me, itâs me.â He chanted, his heart working itself further and further up his throat with every panicked puff of air you let out of your lungs. âItâs James. Itâs me; youâre okay, love.â
âJamie?â You keened, and James felt the first tear of relief fall from his eyes.
âHi angel, hi.â He let out in a whisper; one arm circling around your hips and lifting your weight to relieve your shoulders slightly. âIâm so sorry, baby. Iâm so sorry.â
âI want to go home, James. I want to go home.â You cried.
âI know love, I know. Weâre gonna get you out of here, okay?â He promised as a NCA member came to assist in getting you down. He stood on a chair and sawed away at the rope with a blade, barely managing to catch your wrists as the rope gave way and the rest of your weight fell into Jamesâ awaiting arms.
âDonât, donât!â You shouted, struggling in Jamesâ grasp. âDonât touch me! Donât touch me!â
âY/N-â
But by the time the NCA agent let go of your wrists, you all but went slack in Jamesâ embrace, and James understood your panic.Â
âOkay, okay.â James placated softly as he placed you gently in the chair in front of him, untying the drawstring at the bottom of your sack and pulling it off of your head.
Your face was stained with tears both old and new; tracks etched into your skin that James wondered if they didnât scar from the past three days of being alone and utterly terrified. Your eyes were wild and glassy as you assessed the space; watching NCA agents and members from Jamesâ own company milling about the room. James wasnât sure youâd ever seen the room you were being kept in, depending on when the bag was placed over your head. Your bottom lip was busted and swollen along with some bruising at your jaw, and the eye on the opposite side of your face was also bruised with a small cut to your eyebrow, but all of those injuries appear to be from the first day youâd been kidnapped as you struggled against your captors.Â
James took a moment to saw away the rope still binding your wrists together - red, raw, and bloody - and though you remained perfectly placid, you were shaking something fierce.Â
âI want to go home.â You repeated, as you stared unseeingly over Jamesâ shoulder. You sounded so determined that James half expected you to stand and start marching out of the building on your own accord, but you simply sat in the simple wooden chair, eyes darting frantically around the room as you held onto Jamesâ arms quite literally for dear life.Â
âIâm going to take you home, angel, I promise. But we need to make sure youâre okay first.â
âIâm okay.â You argued quickly, still not looking at James. âIâm okay, Iâm okay. I swear it, Jamie. I want to go home.âÂ
âAngel-â
âI donât want to be here anymore.â You all but sobbed; the force of the breath that escaped you saw you deflating significantly in your chair. âI want to go home.âÂ
âOkay.â James settled on, because he couldnât help but agree; he didnât really want to be here anymore, either. He wanted nothing more than to get you home and perhaps never let you leave again. But he couldnât leave without having you looked at first.
âOi! Where the fuck are the paramedics?â James called towards Sirius who was just returning from his chase. James made to stand, but you screeched and dug your nails into his arm.
âDonât James! Please. Please, please, please.â You begged nonsensically; eyes imploring and desperate, though James wondered how well you could actually see out of them with the way they pooled with unshed tears as you looked up at him.Â
âWhat? What is it, lovie?â James - perhaps embarrassingly - cooed at you; both of his hands reaching to cup your face, and his heart splintered when you leaned into his touch and closed your eyes, forcing the tears to fall.Â
âPlease donât leave. Please. Take me with you - take me home.âÂ
âIâm going to take you home, Y/N. I will, okay?â James promised as Sirius made his way over; his heartbreak written all over his face as he spoke into his microphone to check in with the EMS on Jamesâ behalf. âIâve just found you, angel. Iâm not letting you out of my sight again.âÂ
You seemed appeased, though you never did let go of his hand as the paramedics made it to you and completed their assessment.
Jamesâ never let go of yours either, mind you.
He thinks he might never let go of it again.

â á° .á stepdad(dy)!art
TW: smut MDNI - p in v, not proofread, so so much swearing, so much dirty talk oops, fauxcest/stepcest
word count: 2301
ÂĄ! â! a/n aka post-nut clarity : yikes! i am down BAD
âwhere the fuck have you been?â art's voice cut through the empty front foyer, his eyes narrowed and arms crossed as you stumble through the front door.
just a few years ago, art was nothing but a familiar face in tennis circles, your momâs high-profile client from her days as a sports agent. you remembered watching his matches on tv when you were younger. hearing his name murmured around the houseâart donaldson, the untouchable tennis star and his wife, tashi. but that marriage had fallen apart, fast.Â
and then one day, you came home to find him at the dinner table, leaning back in his chair like heâd always belonged there. they were dating, your mom had said, not hiding the glint of satisfaction in her eyes as if sheâd snagged the catch of the century. you never asked how it started, only watched as art slowly slipped from the screen into your everyday life.
art liked itâa family that wasnât a media-fueled whirlwind, even if the kid was closer to his age than to being an actual child.Â
the past few years had gone smoothly enough. art had settled into this new life, used to the late nights your mom spent at the office . . . and then you turned 18. and you were a rebellious mess of late nights and tight dresses and barely concealed fluttery eyelashes. Â
whatever you were doing â if you meant to or not, was working. you were turning heads, catching eyes. and artâs mind had begun to shift as well. darken.Â
he had begun to become infected by this feeling, creeping under his skin like poison. it bloomed inside him, a constant, gnawing need that he hated himself for. his thoughts spiraled, to you, to your body, to the way your mouth moved when you smiled, when you spoke. worst of all, the way the word daddy slipped from your lips effortlessly, so innocently.
âyou reek. are you drunk?â Â
you shake your head ever so slightly as you stumble towards the couch. "no, daddy, don't be ridiculous," you giggled, your words slurring. you adjust up the hem of your sleeveless dress as you spread on the couch, hair falling into your face. "i'm . . . tipsy at best."
art clenches his jaw at the sound of that forbidden word on your lips. his heart pounds in his chest, and he feels it low in his stomach, a jolt of heat straight to his groin.
he knows this is wrong, knows he shouldn't be picturing all the filthy things he wants to do to you, sprawled on the couch under him. "tipsy, my ass. who were you with?" he managed to choke out.Â
you roll your eyes as you look up at him. "my friend sierra. went to a party." you lick your lips slowly, foot reaching out to graze against his leg. "my neck hurts from looking up at you, daddy. si'down."Â
fuck, what are you doing? trying to drive him crazy? it's working. his cock twitches traitorously in his pants, already starting to stiffen at your casual touch. his body moves before his brain can catch up, sinking down onto the cushion beside you. "there. happy now?" he tries to keep his tone gruff, unaffected.Â
you nod slightly, a small smirk tugging at your lips before you lean back with a pout, your eyes heavy. "so . . . what're you gonna do? hm? ground me?" you rest your legs across his lap.
it takes every ounce of his self-control not to reach out and touch you. all he can think how soft your skin must feel, how you would taste if he leaned in and ran his tongue along your inner thigh. his hands clench into fists at his sides, nails digging into his palms. "maybe I should call your mother. let her deal with you. this is ridiculous. "
but even as the words leave his mouth, he knows he won't do it. knows he'll take the fall for you, like always. because despite his better judgment, despite the sickness churning in his gut at his own twisted desires â he can't bear the thought of disappointing you.Â
you just giggled at his scolding, apparently too far gone to care. you shift on the cushions, arch your back slightly. making the flimsy sundress ride up even higher on your thighs, giving art a peek of red lace that he should not be seeing. art swallowed hard, a muscle in his jaw ticking.
the room is silent for a few moments, artâs confrontation long dissipated.Â
âmomâs gone a lot, hm?â your slurred, shaky voice snaps him out of his daze. you shift closer to him, foot brushing right against his crotch.Â
art inhales sharply, his cock twitching as your foot grazes his straining erection. a flicker of panic passes over his face before he could hide it. "what the hell is that supposed to mean?" he asked defensively, crossing his arms, trying to steady himself.
you just smirk up at him, eyes glinting mischievously even through the drunken haze. "oh c'mon, daddy, you know exactly what i mean." you draw out the forbidden word, letting it hang in the charged air between them. lick your lips. bat your lashes oh so innocently. "y'know, 's just that sheâs never around anymore. mus' get real lonely for you.â
âdonât . . .â he choked. art dragged a hand over his face, trying to collect himself. "just go to bed," he stammered wearily, unable to meet your eyes. "we'll talk more about this in the morning when you're sober."
but you donât listen, continue on as if he never said anything â lips curling into a knowing smirk. "mm, poor daddy," you murmur, a soft, taunting lilt to your voice. "donât get much action, iâm sure."Â Â
art exhales sharply, his eyes flicking to yours, then quickly away. âyou need to go to bed.â
you scoot closer, your legs brushing against his. "i donât want to sleep," you murmur, leaning in just enough for him to feel your breath against his ear. "maybe i want some attention. i know you do."Â
âfuck,â he croaked. âstop.â
but you just smile up at him. lean in just a little. "must be hard, having so much to . . . hold in,â you whisper, your fingers trailing lazily along the edge of his sleeve.Â
âplease," he rasped. "we can't. i'm your father, for fuck's sake.â the words sounded weak even to his own ears. his resistance was crumbling by the second, defenses worn down by months of pent-up lust and longing.Â
ânot really.â
"go to bed," he repeats. this time his voice is barely more than a whimper.
"yeah, i'll go to bed . . . but iâll be thinking about you."
art's eyes slid shut as your fingers worked their way beneath the hem of his shirt, nails raking lightly over his abs. a low groan escaped him, the sound foreign to his own ears. he was in so deep, drowning in a sea of forbidden lust.Â
âmhm, iâll be thinking about you, daddy. are you gonâ make me take care of this myself?â Â
art's breath hitched as your fingers trailed lower, brushing against the waistband of his jeans. his hips jerked involuntarily, aching for more contact despite the voice in the back of his head screaming at him to stop this madness.Â
you pressed a kiss to his cheek, slow, wet. he wants to turn his head, to capture your lips with his own. to claim you, to ruin you for any other man. but he can't. he shouldn't.Â
"please," he begs, but he's not even sure what he's asking for anymore. for you to stop? or for you to keep going, to grind against him until he explodes?
"i think you want this jusâ as badly as i do, huh?" your hand slid lower, brushing over the bulge straining against his zipper. "so why don't you stop fighting and just give in?"
and that's when art's careful control shattered. the last thread snapped, and a ragged curse tore from his throat as his hands shot out, grabbing your hips and hauling you onto his lap. capturing your mouth in a bruising kiss, he scrabbles at your dress, rips it down.
he kisses you like a drowning man gasping for air, devouring you, pouring all his pent-up desire into the heated embrace. his fingers tangled in you hair, tugging roughly as he angled your head to deepen the kiss. you moan into his mouth, your own hands frantically roaming his chest and shoulders. art feels you grinding against him, the heat searing him even through his clothes.
he broke away from her lips to trail open-mouthed kisses along your jaw. down the column of her throat. "fuck, you drive me crazy," he growled against your skin, nipping at your pulse point.
your head lolls back, a wanton moan spilling from your lips. "please," you whimper, fingers scrabbling at his shirt. "i need you so bad."
art's mouth latched onto a pebbled nipple, sucking and biting as he ground his aching cock against you. his hands found your mouth, and he shoved a finger in. your tongue instinctively curling around the digits, lapping at them greedily. you mewled around his fingers, the sound muffled and desperate as arched into him, your own hands frantically working to undo his belt and zipper. art hissed in pleasure as your freed his throbbing member, stroking him slowly while he continued to ravish your chest. " 'm gonna fuck you so good." his hips rock into your hand, seeking more of that delicious friction.
he pulls back just enough to look into your eyes, pupils blown wide with lust. "i'm going to make you mine," he growls, fingers delving into your panties to stroke your slick folds. "gon' â fuck. gonna stretch this pretty pussy out. yeah? . . . yeah, 's that what you want?"
it's filthy, degrading, everything he knows he shouldn't want. but god help him, he can't stop. you nod desperately as you groan into his touch, grip on his dick loosening for a second when he teases your entrance with a finger. another light brush and he lifts his hand to your mouth, slipping it back inside between your lips before scooching back. pressing his cock to your entrance through your lacy panties. "pl â please," you cry, eyes wide and watery. "fuck me, please."
art groans, grinding his cock against your soaked panties. the heat of you seeps through the lacy fabric, making him throb with need. he rubs his tip against the practically see-through fabric, soaked through with arousal. relishes your needy, breathy moans. he hooks his fingers around your panties and rips them away, baring you completely to his hungry gaze. "look at you," he rasps, drinking in the sight of you spread out beneath him, glistening. ready. "so fucking perfect. fuck â 'm gonna . . . i'm gon' wreck this pussy, baby. make it all mine, yeah?" he slaps his length against your clit, smirking crookedly at the way you whimper. "make you forget about all those other â other little boys, yeah?"
and with that, he notches the head of his dick against your entrance and surges forward, burying himself balls-deep in your tight, slick pussy. you cry out, back arching off the couch as he fills you. stretches you, claims you.
he sets a punishing pace, fucking into you like a man possessed. the wet slap of skin on skin fills the room, punctuated by your pornographic moans and his grunts of pleasure "fuckkk," you whine into him languidly, hands scrabbling against his thick arms. "fuck, daddy. you're â you're so fucking big."
he leans down to capture your lips in a filthy kiss, all teeth and tongue. swallows your cries of ecstasy as he pounds into you. he grunts, fingers digging into your hips hard enough to bruise. "you like this, huh? like daddy's big . . . fuck â big cock splitting you open, hm?"
you nod with a sob, thighs shaking at the relentless snapping of his hips into yours. his fingers find your clit, rubbing mercilessly. pushing you closer to the edge with every touch.
"gonna cum," he warns breathlessly, hips stuttering. "gon' fill your cunt up, baby. breed this pussy."
he leans down to bite at your neck, sucking dark bruises into your skin. marking you as his territory.
"cum for me, baby," he demands, voice strained with impending release. "milk â milk me fuckin' dry."
the filthy words send you over the edge, your walls clamping down on him like a vice. you cum with a scream, convulsing around his shaft as he empties himself inside you with a loud moan.
he collapses on top of you, both of you panting and sated. for a long moment, he just holds you, nuzzling into your neck. you smile at him like you'd just won the lottery, legs wrapping around his hips.
"am i better than mom?" you whispered into his ear.
he lets out a real, honest-to-god bark of a laugh. "jesus christ," he pants. "you're fucking . . . you're amazing. fucking intense."
understatement of the century. he just fucked his stepdaughter senseless, filled her with his babies, and he's already craving more. fuck, he's in deep. so fucking deep. literally and figuratively.

Malcolm: Well Iâm taking daddy!
Bob: Alright! Long time no see, VV! Man, itâs been a while, huh?
Vanessa: Just V is fine. Billy, right?
Bob: [sighs] Itâs Bobby. This is my wife, Eliza and this cool guy is Iggy.
Vanessa: [sheepishly] Right. Nice to meet you. Wasnât there another one of you?
Bob: [chuckles] Cassie. We still keep in touch. Sheâs a travel blogger now. And Iâm sure you remember olâ Geoffrey here.
Geoffrey: Good seeing you, Vanessa.
Vanessa: Likewise.
Bob: Heck yeah! Let the festivities begin!
-
Jonathan: This one! This is the perfect tree, right, Mom?
Nancy: Mhm. Yes, thatâs nice- Iâll be right back.
Jonathan: Oh..
Bob: Alright, whatâs going on? You can tell me, itâs just us guys now, and Iggy here is great at keeping secrets.
Geoffrey: Nance was so sad on our trip, sadder than usual. I havenât seen her so low since- well, since Vanessa left. And she kept apologizing to me.
Bob: Youâve mentioned before she gets in a mood sometimes, right?
Geoffrey: Well, yeah... thatâs not all. I saw these bruises on the inside of her thigh.
Bob: [eyes widen] You think sheâs hurting herself?
Geoffrey: Is that it, you think? At first I thought they were- you know, hickies?
Bob: Whoa. Hickies? On Nancy?
Geoffrey: [snorts] Thatâs crazy, right?
Bob: You should talk to her. If she is harming herself, you should get her help, bud.
Geoffrey: And if itâs not that...
Bob: Then, thatâs another kind of conversation. But this is Nancy weâre talking about. You two have been bit by the love bug since high school. I canât imagine her having an affair with some other guy.
-
Nancy: Hi.
Vanessa: Hi.
Nancy: Sorry if Iâm being...odd. I guess, Iâm still getting used to seeing you.
Vanessa: I donât think youâre being odd. I think youâre being you.
Nancy: Is that a bad thing?
Vanessa: [giggles] No, not at all. You havenât changed and itâs refreshing.
Nancy: Ah. Well. You havenât either. I mean..you still feel like my Vanessa.
Nancy Narrates: [All those questions I craved answers for came rushing back to me the more I looked at her. Was my loving her just a girlish memory of our past? Did she ever hear my voicemail? Was it worth mentioning after almost 2 decades apart? After Iâve already married and had children? After Iâve sworn to dedicate my all to them-]
Vanessa: So, about that dinner. Are you free tonight?

I loved this and therfore have many thoughts
Early September was brutal in southern California. Each day seemed hotter than the one before it, and even the smallest bit of yard work was enough to leave Bradley sweaty and miserable. He stood in the middle of his front yard, eyes closed, thinking about how beautiful autumn was in Virginia when he was a kid. He leaned against the handle of the rake, picturing a pumpkin patch, a corn maze and all the things he would never find in San Diego.
đ„șđ„șđ„ș
What he didn't mention was the fact that he often still felt like a bit of an outsider in town, even though he attended all the neighborhood potlucks and still had some blond in his hair from hanging out on the local beaches all summer.
Poor Bradley đ„ș
"And you like the neighborhood?" you asked, fully facing him now with a smirk on your face. He shrugged the best he could without moving too much. "I might like it better now."
Oh he is such a flirt đ€
Then there was the day you bumped into him coming out of the salon next to his barber, and he complimented your colorful nails at the same time you told him his haircut looked nice. He blushed, and you smiled before turning toward your car, glancing back at him a little expectantly.Â
So cuteđ
"Why's that?" you asked, placing your hand on your hip while you held up a head of cabbage. "You're a picky eater?" He shook his head and took a step closer to you. "The exact opposite. I love food. I will eat literally anything that is edible." "I guess it makes sense that you love food," you told him with a smile. "You're a big boy." Your gaze drifted down along his shoulders and chest before you started to look a little embarrassed. "I... yeah... I think I'll just grab whatever looks good and take it from there. See you on Friday night?" "Yeah," he grunted as you walked toward an eggplant display. He would see you on Friday night. And he would be prepared ahead of time to ask you out.
He definitely is rehearsing, asking her out in front of the mirror as soon as he is home đ€
Once again, your laughter had him ready to drop what he was holding and reach for you. He had to ask you out tonight. It had been weeks already since you moved in, and you were definitely giving him a green light. He could think of a dozen different restaurants he wanted to take you to, and maybe you'd like the artsy little movie theater.
It's so cute that he has all these ideas already đ„č
He ran his hand over his face and groaned, parking in front of the restaurant and yanking his keys from the ignition. If he'd just asked you out that day, maybe he'd be picking up twice as much food and sharing it with you tonight.
Oh he is regretting all his life choices right then and there
The air was silent except for the muffled sound of food being prepared in the kitchen behind him. Your eyes looked so sad as you shook your head and pressed your lips together. "No. No, I'm sorry, Bradley."
Oh noooođđ„ș
For the first time since he moved to California, the air outside was too cold. There was an uncomfortable knot in his stomach as he glanced over at your car. He shivered miserably as he saw the shadow of someone waiting in your passenger seat. Then he drove home and ate alone in his kitchen before going to bed.
He is heartbroken before anything even happened đ đ„Č
Today was Halloween, and he spent over an hour carving some of the pumpkins to look like soccer balls before dressing in his usual costume. Handing candy out to the neighborhood kids and trying to guess what they were dressed as sounded like fun. He was determined to have a good night, even if he did have to angle the folding chair on his porch so he was facing slightly away from your house. He would enjoy himself no matter what.
đ„șđ„șđ„ș
"Where's Raphael?" he asked as they collected their candy. Leonardo laughed and said, "Nobody wants to be Raphael. He's the lamest one." "I would have to agree," Bradley replied, about to help himself to a piece of candy as they started to run to the next house.
I feel like Rooster is good with kids because he has the same interests as kids it seems đ
"Hi," you replied immediately, looking from his mustache to the whistle around his neck and back up to his visor. "Are you seriously dressed as Ted Lasso?" "I always dress as Ted Lasso," he told you, and he was rewarded with a smile that made him want to follow you around the neighborhood like a lost puppy.Â
Oh he 100% would
The kid nodded but said, "You need to call it a football." Bradley found himself agreeing. "You're completely right. It's only proper."
Come on Bradley, get into your roleâđ»
Your eyes were alert, scrutinizing his expression as you said, "His name is Max. He's almost ten." "He looks like you." You went silent for a few seconds, fiddling with the soccer ball in your hands. When you finally spoke, you were looking at Bradley's feet. "I knew you didn't know about him. I mean, you did ask me out after all." You laughed even though nothing was funny and finally looked up at his face. Then Max started to walk back the way you and he came, and you followed him. Bradley called your name. When you turned back, he said, "To be clear, I would have still asked you out if I'd known." And then you looked so sad again.
đ„șđ„Čđ
"It's a spicy buffalo dip," you replied, smile growing. "I literally made it with chicken from a can. I'm pretty sure you could trick them into thinking it came from your kitchen. You can even take your tortilla chips, too."
She truly made it thinking about him đ„č
His fingers tightened on the handles when you took a small step closer to him. This was agony, being so close to you when he really wanted to touch you, but knew he couldn't. He whispered your name at the same time you looked up at him and started talking. "Max isn't my son. He's my nephew. But I'm his legal guardian now." Bradley's lips parted, but you shook your head and quickly added. "The night of the last potluck, I got a phone call that my brother and his wife were in a car accident. They both died before they reached the hospital. I had to pick Max up from soccer practice that night, and he's been with me ever since." Tears were welling up in your eyes as Bradley tried to shuffle your crock pot to one hand. He knew how badly this kind of thing hurt from his own childhood. "Shit. I'm really sorry the two of you are going through this. But Max is lucky he has you." When you nodded and shrugged, you looked resigned to the way things were. "I'm also pretty sure Max prefers it when you call it football. Not soccer."
đđđ
Almost a year later, Bradley was standing in his front yard, smiling at the SOLD sticker placed on a realty sign in front of your house. It made sense to have you and Max move into the white cottage with him, because the porch was bigger. It was the perfect size for an elaborate Halloween display.
It was over almost as quickly as it started, and Bradley was ready to drop to his knees and beg you for more. But you were rambling now, and he was trying his best to focus. "I wanted you to ask me out so badly. But then everything changed, and I had to tell you no. Max has a lot he still needs to process, and I don't really have time to date someone who just wants to mess around with me." For the first time in many weeks, Bradley felt lighter than air. He reached out with his free hand and let his knuckles trail gently along your cheek and down to your softly parted lips. "I'm forty years old. I'm kind of over the messing around stage," he promised. And then you were kissing him again.
Ahhhh this is perfect đđ„°đ„łđ„čđ
I love it!! I feel like this is a role Bradley would thrive in, because of him loosing his parents young too, he would try the hardest and kinda knows what it can feel like or a person in a situation like that needs đ„čđ«¶đ»

The sound of something bigger than a car coming down his quiet side street had him cracking his eyes open against the Saturday afternoon sun. A U-Haul lumbered to a stop in front of the house across the street and one door down. The engine settled to silence, and he craned his neck to get a better look. The property had been sitting there with a red and white SOLD sticker over the realty sign for what seemed like months, and now it would appear as though he finally had a new neighbor.
Bradley dropped the rake and had to lunge to grab the handle before it clattered against his stone pathway. The woman who climbed out of the truck, hopping down onto the street in some beat up sneakers, was beautiful. The sun seemed to illuminate her from the inside, and now Bradley was setting the rake down softly as she walked around the truck and slid the back open. It was filled with furniture and boxes, and he watched as an avalanche nearly flowed out as she tried to move one item.
"Shit," he grunted, running across the street as he wiped his dirty hands on the hem of his undershirt. "It looks like you could use a hand," he called out, hoping he wouldn't scare you when he came up behind you just in time to catch a dining chair that was teetering above your head. Then the neatly stacked boxes started to give out as well, and his left hand went to steady them.
You were ducking slightly, preparing for the worst when Bradley realized your back was pressed against his chest. If he moved, there would be a lot of broken furniture to contend with. But then you glanced at him over your shoulder as you stood to your full height, eyes wide and lips parted in surprise.
If you looked beautiful from across the street, then you looked stunning up close, trapped between his body and the truck. "Welcome to the neighborhood," he mumbled like an idiot, but he was rewarded by the smile that curled along your lips.
"Hey, you're pretty good at being neighborly," you replied, gesturing to his right hand holding the chair and his left securing the stack of boxes. His heartbeat quickened at the sound of your voice and how close you were as you told him your name and asked which house was his.
"I'm Bradley. The white cottage across the street." He nodded toward his mess of a front yard with his chin. "I moved in about six months ago."Â
What he didn't mention was the fact that he often still felt like a bit of an outsider in town, even though he attended all the neighborhood potlucks and still had some blond in his hair from hanging out on the local beaches all summer. At the moment, all he could do was fight the urge to tell you how pretty your eyes were.
"And you like the neighborhood?" you asked, fully facing him now with a smirk on your face.
He shrugged the best he could without moving too much. "I might like it better now."
Your eyes widened a bit before you ducked your head, looking up at him with a surprised smile like you couldn't quite believe what he'd just said. And that's when Bradley heard another vehicle pull up behind him. "That would be my friends. Here to help me unpack."
He wanted to joke that it looked like you needed all the help you could get with your furniture avalanche, but he heard several voices calling your name and rushing over to help. He was invited to stay, but when he was finally able to safely back away without anything falling, he realized four other people were there to help you out.
Your eyes were still focused on his as he started to back away. "I'll see you around?" you asked before chewing on your lip.
"I would count on it," he confirmed, turning back toward his house so you could get settled into yours.
But he did hear one of your friends ask, "Who is he?"
"Bradley," you replied, just barely loud enough for him to hear. "From the white cottage."
--------------------------------
After that first encounter, he saw you everywhere. You were pulling into the parking spot next to his Bronco when he came out of the grocery store. When he asked how you liked your new house, it sparked a conversation about hardwood versus porcelain tile flooring, and Bradley's ice cream was completely melted by the time he got home.
Then there was the day you bumped into him coming out of the salon next to his barber, and he complimented your colorful nails at the same time you told him his haircut looked nice. He blushed, and you smiled before turning toward your car, glancing back at him a little expectantly.Â
Then he ran into you at the farmer's market where you were buying vegetables for the upcoming neighborhood potluck. You asked him what he thought you should make.
"Well, I'm the wrong person to ask," he replied, feeling a little lightheaded as his brain begged him to ask you out on a date.
"Why's that?" you asked, placing your hand on your hip while you held up a head of cabbage. "You're a picky eater?"
He shook his head and took a step closer to you. "The exact opposite. I love food. I will eat literally anything that is edible."
Your bright laughter cascaded across his skin as your head tipped back. The expanse of your neck looked smooth and perfect, and Bradley wanted to have your permission to put his lips there. And that was a startling thought since nobody had really caught his attention like this since he was first stationed in San Diego. Nobody made him feel like he was at home in his house before you started waving to him whenever you saw him outside.
"I guess it makes sense that you love food," you told him with a smile. "You're a big boy." Your gaze drifted down along his shoulders and chest before you started to look a little embarrassed. "I... yeah... I think I'll just grab whatever looks good and take it from there. See you on Friday night?"
"Yeah," he grunted as you walked toward an eggplant display. He would see you on Friday night. And he would be prepared ahead of time to ask you out.
----------------------------
"No," you gasped. Bradley recognized your voice and turned around to face you in Mrs. Diaz's kitchen. "That's what you brought to the potluck?" You sounded appalled, but you were clearly smiling as you looked at what he was holding.
"I told you I liked to eat food, not that I knew how to cook anything."
"Bradley," you groaned, shaking your head at the bag of chips and jar of salsa in his hands. "This is bad. Next time, I'll prepare two dishes so you can pretend you made one."
His heart skipped a beat at the idea of handing you things in his kitchen and watching you make something as nice as the lasagna you were holding. "It's useless," he replied with a frown. "After six months of bringing restaurant style tortilla chips and medium salsa, nobody would believe I cooked anything."
But he watched you get swept up in conversation after conversation, and then the opportunity slipped away when you ducked away from everyone to answer a call. You had a concerned look on your face with your phone pressed to your cheek, and then you were rushing out of Mrs. Diaz's house and along her front path before you disappeared from view.
Suddenly it was well into October, and he'd barely seen you at all. There were a few mornings that felt cool enough to coax him to buy some pumpkins for his front porch. He thought about taking one over to your house as an excuse to finally ask you out, but he figured you must be pretty busy right now. Maybe work got a little crazy. He tried not to imagine that someone else had asked you out and that was the reason why you were so scarce.
"Damn," he grunted when he drove his Bronco past your house on his way to get some takeout for dinner on a Saturday night. He just couldn't stop thinking about you. Why didn't he ask you out that first day when he saved you from your dining chair? He ran his hand over his face and groaned, parking in front of the restaurant and yanking his keys from the ignition. If he'd just asked you out that day, maybe he'd be picking up twice as much food and sharing it with you tonight.
A minute later, when he turned to leave the restaurant with his bag, he could not believe his luck. You were walking inside. "Hey."
You glanced up, and for the briefest second, you smiled at him like you always used to. "Bradley." But then your smile started to fade away slowly, and he would do anything to bring it back.
His heart was pounding, and his brain was screaming at him, so he squared his shoulders and did the only thing he could do. "Hey, if you're free tomorrow night, I was thinking maybe you and I could get dinner? Or hit up the movie theater on Pomona? The seats are uncomfortable, but they show some indie stuff which could be fun. Or maybe another night might work?"
The air was silent except for the muffled sound of food being prepared in the kitchen behind him. Your eyes looked so sad as you shook your head and pressed your lips together. "No. No, I'm sorry, Bradley."
Well, fuck.
He backed away from you until he bumped into the wall, and then he focused on getting to the door. "Right," he replied after he had a few more feet between your body and his. "Well, I'll see you around the neighborhood."
For the first time since he moved to California, the air outside was too cold. There was an uncomfortable knot in his stomach as he glanced over at your car. He shivered miserably as he saw the shadow of someone waiting in your passenger seat. Then he drove home and ate alone in his kitchen before going to bed.
---------------------------------
Bradley tried his best not to think about you. One day last week, when he saw your front door swing open, he waited to step down from his porch so you wouldn't have to wave awkwardly to him. And yesterday, for lack of anything better to do, he bought more pumpkins, and he waited in his driveway to unload them until you carried all of your groceries inside your house.Â
Bradley lit the candles inside his pumpkins and dropped down into the chair with a bowl of candy as the afternoon sky turned dusky. It didn't take long until a toddler dressed as a witch made an appearance with her dad, and Bradley had a good laugh when she reached for three pieces of candy.
"Trick or treat!" shouted three kids dressed as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
"Where's Raphael?" he asked as they collected their candy.Â
Leonardo laughed and said, "Nobody wants to be Raphael. He's the lamest one."
"I would have to agree," Bradley replied, about to help himself to a piece of candy as they started to run to the next house.
But then he saw you. And you weren't alone. You were dressed as a soccer player, complete with knee socks and a soccer ball, and you were accompanied by an approximately ten year old kid who looked a lot like you. He was also dressed as a soccer player, and he smiled at Bradley as he said, "Trick or treat."
Bradley stood up, still holding onto the bowl of candy so the child could make his selection while he got a better look at you. "Hey."
"Hi," you replied immediately, looking from his mustache to the whistle around his neck and back up to his visor. "Are you seriously dressed as Ted Lasso?"
"I always dress as Ted Lasso," he told you, and he was rewarded with a smile that made him want to follow you around the neighborhood like a lost puppy.Â
"Of course you do," you said, letting your gaze drift toward the child who was currently looking closely at the soccer ball pumpkins while holding onto a Snickers bar. "Somehow you match with us."
The boy looked up at Bradley and asked, "Did you carve these yourself? They look pretty good."
"Yeah," he replied, wishing he actually had taken the time to drop a pumpkin or two off on your porch. "I have perfected the soccer ball technique, kiddo."
The kid nodded but said, "You need to call it a football."
Bradley found himself agreeing. "You're completely right. It's only proper."
When the kid turned back to explore the rest of the pumpkin display a little more, Bradley took a step closer to you. "I didn't know you had a son," he said softly.
Your eyes were alert, scrutinizing his expression as you said, "His name is Max. He's almost ten."
"He looks like you."
You went silent for a few seconds, fiddling with the soccer ball in your hands. When you finally spoke, you were looking at Bradley's feet. "I knew you didn't know about him. I mean, you did ask me out after all." You laughed even though nothing was funny and finally looked up at his face. Then Max started to walk back the way you and he came, and you followed him.Â
Bradley called your name. When you turned back, he said, "To be clear, I would have still asked you out if I'd known."
And then you looked so sad again.

To Bradley's amazement, the weather finally cooled to the perfect temperature in November, but he found he didn't want to be outside as much. It was a shame, because if he stood in the middle of his yard and closed his eyes, he could almost imagine he was in Virginia.Â
One Friday after work, he cleaned the slightly rotten pumpkins from his porch and dragged his trash bin to the curb. Your front door was open, and he paused to see if you or Max happened to walk past it before heading back inside his empty house.
There was another potluck tonight, but he just didn't even feel like going. He had the usual chips and salsa on his kitchen counter, but he had no desire to socialize with the neighbors. He was about to change into gym shorts and surrender to a cold beer and a basketball game on TV when there was a knock on his door.
When he glanced through the front window, he saw that it was you, and his heart seemed to drag him toward the door. He was turning the knob before he thought better of it, and he was met with your wide eyes and a crock pot in your hands.
"Hi. Bradley."
"Hey." He swallowed hard before he said your name, and your lips turned up into a soft smile. "Is that for the potluck?"
"Yeah," you said, reaching out to hand the crock pot to him. "Well, I actually made it for you to take. Max and I will be bringing lasagna again."
Whatever Bradley was holding smelled so good, his stomach started to growl. "I can't take this. Nobody will believe I made it," he murmured, nudging at the lid with his thumb.
"It's a spicy buffalo dip," you replied, smile growing. "I literally made it with chicken from a can. I'm pretty sure you could trick them into thinking it came from your kitchen. You can even take your tortilla chips, too."
His fingers tightened on the handles when you took a small step closer to him. This was agony, being so close to you when he really wanted to touch you, but knew he couldn't. He whispered your name at the same time you looked up at him and started talking.Â
"Max isn't my son. He's my nephew. But I'm his legal guardian now." Bradley's lips parted, but you shook your head and quickly added. "The night of the last potluck, I got a phone call that my brother and his wife were in a car accident. They both died before they reached the hospital. I had to pick Max up from soccer practice that night, and he's been with me ever since."
Tears were welling up in your eyes as Bradley tried to shuffle your crock pot to one hand.
You laughed, maybe in spite of yourself, but Bradley still loved how it sounded. You briefly glanced over your shoulder toward your house and swiped at your tears as you said, "He absolutely does. He also keeps asking me about Ted Lasso across the street and his football pumpkins. I told him you're nice."
Bradley's heart had him dragging his feet closer to you, holding onto the warm pot of buffalo chicken dip for dear life. "Is that so?"
You nodded and stared at Bradley's chest for a few seconds before meeting his eyes again. Your lips parted several times before you whispered his name, and he leaned in a bit closer. After a few seconds, he started to step back, but your hand settled lightly on his shoulder, stopping him. Before he could react, you closed the remaining space, pressing your lips to his in a tentative kiss.
It was over almost as quickly as it started, and Bradley was ready to drop to his knees and beg you for more. But you were rambling now, and he was trying his best to focus. "I wanted you to ask me out so badly. But then everything changed, and I had to tell you no. Max has a lot he still needs to process, and I don't really have time to date someone who just wants to mess around with me."
For the first time in many weeks, Bradley felt lighter than air. He reached out with his free hand and let his knuckles trail gently along your cheek and down to your softly parted lips. "I'm forty years old. I'm kind of over the messing around stage," he promised. And then you were kissing him again.
The three of you walked to Mrs. Diaz's house together that evening. Bradley carried the crock pot, you carried the lasagna, and Max carried the tortilla chips. The conversation was mainly focused on how badly Max wanted to learn how to carve a football pumpkin.
Almost a year later, Bradley was standing in his front yard, smiling at the SOLD sticker placed on a realty sign in front of your house. It made sense to have you and Max move into the white cottage with him, because the porch was bigger. It was the perfect size for an elaborate Halloween display.

Thoughts on Grumbo?
I would kill for them. I think they might be the biggest hyperfixation ship in my life, I don't remember this level of insanity with any other fandom before.
I guess itâs not that visible from me, because I prefer to keep my socials blogs kinda clean from rebloging stuff*, AND I donât draw them so often because I have so much projects on me and no time, itâs kinda sad.
honestly, if I had started, there would have been a huge lecture about grumbo, they have had so much going on for several years, and all the details fit so perfectly into an incredibly interesting dynamic that includes not only the interaction between the two of them, but also the essence of each of them, some character traits, daily habits, traumas and etc.
I'm going to say something that really upsets me. the problem of grumbo's non-popularity is very much based on the fact that their ship does not lie on the surface. itâs not as accessible as other popular ships in this fandom, and this is extremely painful, considering what their history really is.
grumbo are built on much bigger things than just silly interactions between characters that you might notice in episodes, even bigger than scripted lore moments on hermitcraft and life series. everything goes from their very first collabs to this day for several years already, and some micro fragments/clips from their videos are simply NOTHING compared to the context of the whole story. and just a disclaimer: I'm talking about the characters here, not about real people, the whole story only falls on their characters.
I often see that people may not understand grumboâs ship dynamic at all simply because they watch only one pov (mostly grian). in this case, I beg you to watch both povs, you miss a lot if you watch only one person. in general, you can also watch third-party people with them! last life grumbo are also built on martyn's pov, for example.
I am so happy that their story started spinning again at the end of the hc s9 due to mumboâs return, now in hc s10 + WHATEVER IS GOING ON in life series (especially in life series, because mumbo has NEVER had such possessive moments about grian before).
âforget the cactus ring, the desert i'm stuck in is saharaâ
* I often reblog things from @mwapollo because he can put everything into right words MUCH better than me, especially when we discussing it all on a daily basis together, so we literally have the same vision about grumbo. I just really want all of his thoughts to be seen in this fandom. ykw I would turn it into shout-out, GO TO @mwapolloâs blog I DARE you. if youâre a grumbo fan, his blog is my first recommendation to go to.

àŒâ§âË. jâs note. for @redskies-7. turned out a bit longer than i expected but only because i adored your request ⊠warnings: mature content. 18+. mastĆ«rbation. fingÄring
peter had been on high alert ever since the mission that left you with nasty gashes across your abdomen. the memory of you collapsing, blood soaking through your suit, haunted him, and heâd been an absolute wreck ever since. even now, with bandages wrapped snug around your waist and most of the pain fading to a dull ache, he still treated you like you were on deathâs doorstep. âokay, careful, careful,â heâd mutter every time you so much as shifted on the bed. peter would zip over in a blur, fluffing pillows and checking the bandages even when you insisted you were fine.
you had tried to hint that you wanted his attention for something other than fussing over you. but to your disappointment, heâd just shake his head, âuh, no can do, babe,â heâd say, practically vibrating with nervous energy. âyou need rest, and iâm, like, a terrible influence when it comes to resting. last thing i wanna do is, yâknow, make things worse.â
but you were feeling better. really. and you were tired of the distance he was forcing between you, however well-intentioned it was. late one night, you woke up feeling restless, perhaps a little too desperate. the ache of your injuries having dulled considerably, transferring to a different kind of ache, slow and burning between your thighs. peter was sprawled next to you, completely conked out and snoring softly. wincing, you adjusted yourself into a more comfortable position before slipping your fingers under the waistline of your panties.
you squirmed at the much-needed contact, hoping it would be enough to take the edge off. you bit your lip, trying to stifle any moans⊠but your small fingers were far from enough to ease some of the pent-up frustration from two long weeks of forced rest. but then, just as you finally felt the tickle of a weak orgasm, you heard your boyfriend let out a low, sleepy groan.
âhey⊠whatâs goinâ on?â you turned your head to see him blinking himself awake, silver hair sticking up in all directions. as his eyes adjusted to the darkness, they landed on the guilty look on your face, how your hands were conveniently under the covers. a slow, lazy grin spread across his face as he put two and two together.
âwait a secâŠâ he raised an eyebrow, looking far too pleased with himself. âare youâŠ?â heat flooded your cheeks, and you froze, pulling the blanket up over your face in embarrassment. âpeter, itâs nothing. just⊠go back to sleep,â you mumbled, but he only chuckled, clearly enjoying this far too much.
âwait, are youâŠ?â he asked, a hint of poorly concealed amusement in his voice. âno way.â he stretched out his arms and looked at you, that amused smirk making your face go even hotter. âyou couldnât just ask me for help?ââpeter,â you whispered, mortified, pulling the blanket up in an attempt to hide your face.
âjustâg-go back to sleep.â
ânah, canât do that now,â he gently tugged the blanket back down to see your face. his smile turned downright devious. âyouâre over here trying to go solo when iâm literally right here?â he scoffed, shaking his head. âbabe, iâm almost offended. i thought we were supposed to be a team.â
you buried your face in your hands, utterly embarrassed. but, to your surprise, the teasing stopped immediately; off like a switch. peter nudged your hands away gently, looking at you with earnest concern.
âlook,â he began, softer this time, âi know youâre still healing, butâiâll get back in the groove real quick. donât want you wearing yourself out, right?â peter flexed his fingers, stretching them out with a flourish, and then, his whole hand started to tremble, no that wasnât the right word â his hand was vibrating. there was a slight blur to it, as his fingers quivered like a hummingbirdâs wings, the movement almost imperceptible to the naked eye.
ââŠor did you forget my specialty?â he wiggled his eyebrows. you giggled despite yourself, embarrassment starting to melt away as peter braced himself with one forearm planted carefully by your side, making sure not to press into your bandaged torso. âso⊠what do you say?â he whispered into your ear, âlet me take care of you?â
and just like that, you were granted something youâd been denied for weeks. peter had always prided himself on his unique style of âmultitaskingâ. thanks to his ADHD, focusing on one thing wasnât exactly his strong suit, but with you, he was hell-bent on trying. besides, he was pretty sure he could handle itâespecially since youâd made it clear you really needed him right now.
âmghm ohmygod yes, right there, right thereââ
he let out a little chuckle at your enthusiasm, lips brushing along your jawline as his vibrating fingers plunged in and out of you. âyou know i kept telling myself, âpeter, you gotta be responsible, let her heal,ââ his voice dropped, almost like he was letting you in on some big secret.
âbut⊠câmon, youâre you. how was i supposed to stay away?â he moved to press a kiss just below your ear, letting out a little dramatic sigh. normally, you wouldâve been slightly annoyed with peterâs chattiness, but his voice now possessed a soothing quality that served the purpose to ground you⊠and distract you from the lewd squelches that reached your ears.
âfuck, youâre, like, my kryptonite. i missed you like this,â your fingers were tangled in his hair, threading through the soft, messy silver strands, and as you gave a gentle tug, peter let out a low hum of contentment. his eyelids fluttered for a second, the corners of his mouth tugging up into a lazy grin as his lips continued their slow, lazy journey from your collarbone down to the soft curve of your breast.
âmhm, keep doinâ that baby. youâre so good fer me.â
he mumbled against your skin, swirling his tongue around your rock-hard nipple while sinking in knuckle-deep. reduced to nothing but a writhing mess in the sheets, the only response that sounded from you was a strained whimper, the moment you felt his fingers curl against your sweet spot. the glorious stretch made you realise just how much you were missing out in this two weeks of abstinence, and how hard it mustâve been for peter as wellâjudging by the way his hips were rocking against the mattress.
âshouldâve woken me up soonerâwouldâve saved you a whole lotta trouble.â another moan slipped past your lips as peter began to thrust his fingers with more vigour, reaching deeper than you never thought possible while simultaneously maintaining that delicious vibration in his fingertips. the heat that had been building in the pit of your stomach was fuelled with each stroke of his thumb on your on your clit, and within seconds, a mind-numbing pleasure set your entire bloodstream ablaze. as you rode out your orgasm, peterâs other hand slid over yours, lacing your fingers together.
as your breathing finally started to even out, you glanced over at your boyfriend, who was watching you with that soft, starry-eyed look, his teeth catching on his bottom lip. he caught you staring and gave you a small, lopsided smile, reaching over to brush a few stray hairs from your face. âfeelinâ better?â you nodded yes, still catching your breath, and leaned forward to press a slow, lingering kiss to his lips, feeling the heat of his erection poke against your abdomen.
when you pulled back, you whispered, âi wanna do something for you, too. with you, to be exact.â
his eyes widened, that hint of pink deepening in his cheeks. for a second, he just stared, looking torn, like he was debating with himself. you could practically see the gears turning in his head, weighing his worry against his own need for you. then peter sighed deeply, running a hand through his messy hair, trying to muster his usual bravado.âokay, fine,â he finally relented, shifting to move on top of you carefully, his hand bracing by your side to avoid putting any pressure on your bandaged torso. âbut if i hurt youâor if you start bleeding againâiâm⊠iâm wrapping you up in so much gauze you wonât be able to move,â
a/n: sorry if this sounded ooc⊠itâs been a while since iâve written for peter </3

There you are
this is part two to what was i made for! please beware that this once again contains topics on mental health depression and postpartum depression and anxiety if you are not comfortable with those topics please donât read any further. please know that mental health is a serious issue please get the help you deserve. as always let me know how this was :)
Lando knew he was wrong for screaming at you the moment he saw your eyes well up.
He regretted ever raising his voice. It wasnât that he was trying to belittle you as a motherâGod no! He would rather hurt himself than ever make you feel that way.
It was just that you looked like you were at your absolute wit's end, and poor little Charlotte was starting to turn red from all the tiny screams she was letting out. In a hasty decision, he snatched her away from you and rushed to give her a bottle, not realizing this would be your last straw.
You had made the mistake of going online after giving birth, only to face relentless criticism. They picked on everything, from your weight to your looks to how you held your own daughter. The cruelty felt endless. As if the criticism wasnât enough, Ralph Lauren had chosen your husband as part of their campaign, thrusting him into the spotlight. Maybe it was the hormones or the lack of recognition for all you had gone through, but seeing all the womenâespecially his ex, maugi liking and commenting about him made you feel like heâd be better off with anyone else but you.
Each day became more challenging. Lando was too preoccupied with his mini-me to notice how the light was missing from your eyes or the constant discomfort you felt due to the soreness from breastfeeding issues.
You had even mentioned needing to see a doctor, only to be brushed aside. You felt lost, with no way out. Lando was a wonderful father no one could deny that but he was a poor husband, and he would eventually pay a high price for it.
A couple of hours after the screaming incident, Lando announced he would be home late, as he planned to go clubbing with Max and some friends. He didnât look up from his phone to notice how exhausted and glassy-eyed you were. After kissing his daughter goodnight, he left, not even sparing a glance at the woman he claimed to love.
This was your chance. Charlotte was finally down after much fuss, and with Lando out, you felt this was the opportunity to end what you considered your burdened existence.
A friend had noticed your low spirits and lent you some of her depression pills, hoping they'd help you sleep. But you had something else in mind. You had made up your mind and even wrote a little note for Charlotte, telling her how much you loved her and that you would see her in heaven someday.
You wanted her to grow up kind and never to do what you were about to do. Your heart broke with each word, but you didnât bother writing a note for your husband, assuming heâd be relieved to be rid of you.
With a heavy heart, you walked to Charlotte's cot, kissing her goodbye for the last time, taking in her perfect features and innocence. This was the last time you would see your daughter, and you felt at peace with that.
You took heavy steps to the guest bathroom, knowing Lando wouldnât enter this room when he returned. It was the only room in the house that didnât receive attention, perhaps why you chose it as your final place.
You set the bathtub to a scorching temperature, sat down with a bottle of pills in your hand, and said a final prayer, ready for the pain and exhaustion to end. Just thirty pills would set you free. With each pill, your heart emptied of hurt and suffering, your eyes shed their final tears, and your mind quieted. At last, everything went blank, and you were finally at ease.
Lando always prided himself on knowing when something was wrong with you, like a sixth sense. He never thought heâd feel that way in the middle of a nightclub, but the moment he got the feeling, he knew it was serious. His stomach was heavy with anxiety, his mind ablaze with thoughts. He had Max drive him home, and thank God he did. The moment he entered the house, he noticed the unsettling quiet. It was too quiet. You and he might not have been in a good place, but he expected to hear something a TV on or you talking to his mom.
Lando went up to check on Charlotte, wanting to ensure she wasnât the reason for his worry. His little angel was sleeping peacefully, unaware of the chaos that was about to unfold. Lando nearly missed the small piece of paper near her cot, thinking it was trash, but as he picked it up, he felt his heart stop.
It was your note, a suicide letter. Each word filled him with a sense of horror and urgency he had never felt before. He never thought heâd be reading his wifeâs final words.
Every step he took was rushed and panicked as he searched for you, desperate to find you alive. All he felt was regretâregret for not knowing, for not being there, for not asking. Lando eventually found you, cold but, to his relief, alive, lying in the guest bathroom.
The next 48 hours were hell for him, watching you still and silent in the ICU after having your stomach pumped. He finally understood the severity of postpartum depression. The doctor had a serious talk with Lando, deeply concerned about your mental state.
Determined to support your recovery, Lando did everything he could to make you feel better. Your road to recovery wasnât easy; it was long and hard.
But with Lando by your side, things began to improve. He started each day with something positive to say about you and your relationship. He helped with Charlotte and showed incredible kindness when you were at your lowest. He also set boundaries with the media and fans to protect your privacy.
Day by day, you felt better and more confident. The best part was finally getting the help you had been desperately needing. You realized your fears were not reality, and with Landoâs love, you could overcome them.
Open communication became the cornerstone of your relationship.
Lando learned from his mistakes, and your daughter couldnât get enough of you.
The negative voices in your head finally faded. You were back to being you.
With a husband who had truly woken up and was committed to never letting you feel that lost again.

Never Really Over
a little bit of divorced!harry for your consideration
"I just wanna see him."
Y/n gave her ex a long look, not betraying the warring emotions swirling in her belly. Harry rarely showed up this late. He rarely showed up unannounced, for that matter. It made things easierâseeing him when she could prepare herself for the encounter. Now he was here on her doorstep, hair messy and eyes all pleading and sad.
"I just put him to bed, H," Y/n sighed. It wasn't that she didn't want to keep Harry from their son, but it was way too late, and it wasn't his week.
It had nothing to do with the fact that Y/n had been feeling particularly lonely lately and seeing her ex husband be all sweet with their son would make her think traitorous thoughts.
"I know, I know, I've just... I've had a long day, and I just want to see him. I won't even wake him up, I swear. I just want to sit with him."
Despite the divorce, Y/n still knew Harry struggled with the demise of their relationship, and she did too, even if she was the one who ultimately filed. They were five months in, but she felt like no time had passed at all. She floated between half expecting Harry to walk through the door like he used to and frustrated by the way their relationship turned so tumultuous by the end. It was all too complicated, which was why she preferred Harry's visits to be planned. It helped her to compartmentalize.
But she saw the look in his eyes and couldn't help but empathize with her ex-husband.
He looked tired and lost and maybe even at his wits end a little. She knew that look well, she recognized it every time she looked in the mirror on the days Harry had their son. She knew what it was like to have a bad day and want nothing more than to hold their little bub and let him wash away every bit of stress and frustration. Y/n did everything she could to not go completely out of her mind when it was Harry's week with their son, and she imagined that her ex felt similarly.
"Twenty minutes," she said, opening the door further and stepping to the side.
Harry's shoulders sagged with relief. He stepped toward Y/n as if he was going to hug her, then seemed to think better of it and went straight inside.
Y/n stayed downstairs while Harry went up, letting him have a private moment with their son. She cleaned up in the meantime, putting away stray toys and books and fluffing couch cushions and refolding blankets. Anything to not think of Harry with her son, or the soft look he always got when he gazed down at their little boy. It had always been her kryptonite, and she wasn't sure she'd gotten over it yet.
A little while later, Harry came back downstairs. Having organized and straightened up everything she possibly could, Y/n settled on the couch with the glass of wine she'd promised herself earlier that day. She'd wanted to have it in her bed with her book, but she settled for scrolling on her phone until her ex eventually left.
"Thank you," Harry said, his voice soft, careful not to wake the five year old upstairs. "You didn't have to do that, but I appreciate it."
"Don't worry about it," Y/n said, trying to appear like seeing him didn't have an effect on her the way it used to.
"Really, Y/n, I owe you."
"Let's not go and make promises you can't keep again," she muttered.
Y/n felt guilty as soon as she said it. They were having a civil moment, a rarity since the whirlwind of their divorce. She hadn't meant to pick at old wounds and make them bleed again. Her response was a reflex more than anything, one that she couldn't keep in check when she was tired.
"I'm not the one who filed for divorce, Y/n," Harry said, a dark cloud of emotion overtaking his face. "If anyone broke promises, it was you."
"Those vows were broken long before we got divorced, and you know it," Y/n said, that old fire that was more of a dull ember these days rising to the surface.
Harry and Y/n fell in love hard and fast, both loving each other fiercely and with everything cell in their body. Their relationship had been full of passion and intensity and so much love it was almost suffocating. But it also meant that they fought just as hard. Their arguments often blazed and burned bright, then fizzled out until they were in each other's arms again as if nothing had happened.
Until the arguments got bigger.
And longer.
And Y/n just couldn't take it anymore.
Y/n could tell that the anger simmering in Harry's eyes was more for show. She could see the sadness, perhaps even loneliness, in those lovely green eyes of his. And maybe her anger was a little more bravado than genuine hurt too. Maybe it was easier to slip into familiar habits and poke at old wounds than admit the truth.
She missed him.
"Don't make me the villain here. Youâ"
"I don't want to fight with you," she said before Harry could volley anything back. "I shouldn't have said what I said. I'm sorry. It's been a long day for me, and I'm assuming yours wasn't a walk in the park either."
Harry didn't say anything, or do anything, for a moment. Then, he let his head drop, his shoulders slumping a little. Feeling more than a little bad for kicking him while he was down, Y/n stood up from the couch and fetched another glass before pouring some wine in it for her ex. "Here," she said. "A peace offering. You look like you could use it."
With a laugh that held no humor in it, he took it and raised the glass to his mouth, and Y/n tried hard not to stare at his lips. Or the column of his throat as it bobbed when he took a sip. Orâ
"Is this one of mine?"
Y/n willed her cheeks not to flush. "I might've snagged a few bottles from your collection before we sold the house. Most of them went untouched anyways."
"They were aging," Harry said, a little of that humor and charm she fell in love with sparking in his eyes, the lines of his face. "You're supposed to let the bottles rest for a few years until they're at their peak, and then you drink them."
Y/n shrugged. "If you wait too long it goes bad and you miss out on a perfectly good bottle altogether, and then you do all that waiting for nothing."
She didn't mean anything by it, but both of them recognized the subtle truth in regards to their own relationship. Y/n wondered if they would ever be over this part. The stumbling through conversations and trying to avoid dangerous subjects that were littered between them like a minefield.
"Are you saying that's what happened with us?" Harry asked after taking another sip. "That I waited too long to appreciate what was right in front of me? What was perfect in every way the whole time?"
"I was talking about wine, not us."
"You've always been perfect in my eyes, Y/n," Harry said. "You and that perfect angel upstairs. Both of you are my entire world."
"Don't," Y/n said, taking a step back when she realized how close together they were.
"I miss you," Harry said, his voice hitching in his throat. "I miss waking up to our baby snuggled between us. I miss holding your hand while we watch him play at the park. I miss building pillow forts and playing pretend. I miss you, Y/n. I miss being loved by you. I hate that we're divorced. I hate that I signed those stupid papers and let you walk away."
Her throat suddenly felt dry, her heart pumping in her chest so hard she worried he might hear it. Blinking, Y/n tried to maintain the thread of composure holding her together. "You've had a long day. I can tell you need restâ"
"Don't patronize me," he said, stepping closer and closing the small distance between them once more. When Y/n didn't try to widen it again, Harry continued. "If you don't miss me, if you don't still feel what I feel, then say that. But if you do..."
Harry took Y/n's glass and set it down on the coffee table along with his own. He straightened up, one free hand lightly caressing your face, his thumb grazing across her cheek with a touch so delicate she barely felt it. It was agonizing. To have him right there, just the way she used to, and only get a phantom touch. It was maddening.
So maddening, that when he leaned in, Y/n didn't stop him.
She might have whimpered, and her knees might have slightly buckled, and she might have clutched her shirt between her fingers in a desperate, iron grip as Harry slid his mouth against hers, but she would deny it if he said anything about it later.
His kiss was all-consuming, he'd been a ghost in her new life for months, and suddenly he was everywhereâon her tongue, in her hands, against her chest. And she nearly forgot how explosive kissing him was. How it was almost like a dance that they'd mastered but were always learning new and exciting steps to. The softness of her ex's lips were as familiar as ever, but the stubble on his cheeks was new. She didn't recognize the shirt he wore, but she knew the body beneath it almost as well as her own. And his handsâ
"We can'tâWe're notâHarryâ"
Over the years, Y/n had grown used to the feeling of Harry's wedding band against her skin. When he held her hand, when he cupped her cheek, when he was spreading her open or landing a firm slap to her ass. It was familiar, a part of him that just seemed intrinsic after they got married.
But now, as she placed her hand over the one that held the side of her face as he kissed along her throat, it wasn't there. The band was gone, they weren't married anymore, and they certainly shouldn't be kissing like they still were.
"Just this once," Harry murmured, pressing the words along the curve of her jaw. "It's been so long, baby. I just want to feel you again. We can still be divorced after. Like last time."
Flames licked Y/n's core as she remembered the night in question. It had been the night the divorce had been finalized. Harry and Y/n signed and initialed every dotted line, the lawyers shook hands and left, then Harry and Y/n went their separate ways
Harry still insisted that her late-night message about a few of his possessions that got mixed in with her things was meant to have some kind of subtext, and Y/n would swear until she was blue in the face that her text was innocent, even if the activities that followed Harry coming over to "pick up" said items were anything but. It was a final goodbye. It was closing a chapter on a book neither of them ever really believed would end.
"Last time was supposed to be the last time," Y/n said, her voice shallow and not at all convincing.
"Tell me you don't want me right now," Harry said, his hand creeping beneath the waistband of her pajama pants. Y/n's mouth opened in a strangled gasp, too aroused and too in love with him still to push him away. "Tell me not to set you down on the kitchen counter and let me love on that pussy the way I used to. Tell me not to haul you upstairs and fuck you hard for breaking us up when we could've had this every. Single. Day."
Harry's last words were punctuated by the thrust of his fingers inside Y/n, each one making her curl around him tight. He lifted her into his arms and set her on the couch, the closest surface in the vicinity that wasn't hardwood flooring. His fingers still moving inside her, pumping slowly, he pressed a bruising kiss to her lips.
"Tell me not to love you anymore," he said, his teeth nipping at her bottom lip. "Tell me how to fall out of love with you. Tell me how to not dream of you. Tell me how to not want you anymore."
Y/n, who had succumbed to this moment, this lapse in...whatever it was, could only grip her ex's hair as he worked her over with his fingers, each word he spoke a balm to the loneliness these last months brought. She wasn't ready to start seeing someone else after the divorce, but now she worried no one would ever measure up to Harry. He ruined her for any other man who might try to sweep her off her feet in the future.
"Tell me, Y/n, and I'll let you come."
Y/n was a mess. She could hear it as Harry's fingers slid in and out of her quickly and harshly, then slowing down before she could finish. He used to do it all the time, knowing how worked up it made her, and now he knew nothing had changed.
"Iâ" she gasped. She was so close she could barely think straight. Harry's desperate words and the way his fingers curled inside her had her seeing stars. But if she knew her ex, he would stay there and edge her until she gave him what he wanted. "I don't know. I don't know how to make it stop. Please let me come."
Having thought she'd given him what he wanted, Y/n prepared herself for an earth-shattering orgasm. She surrendered herself to tonight, to him, even if she regretted it in the morning. Even if secretly she didn't, which would make her feel even worse.
But instead of pushing her over the edge, Harry removed his fingers from her altogether. The whine Y/n let out at the loss was perhaps a little undignified, but she couldn't think straight with the thick cloud of lust looming over her.
"Whâ"
"We're going to do this properly," he said, scooping her up into his arms and heading back upstairs, taking a left toward her bedroom. Their little angel boy was down the hall on the right side, but Y/n knew they still had to be quiet.
Once behind the closed door of her bedroom, they were both quick to shed each other of their clothes. Stitching ripped, a button or two flew, socks tossed carelessly to corners of the room they'd probably forget about later until there wasn't an ounce of fabric between them.
There wasn't time to stand and appreciate. This wasn't a romantic moment. It was desperate, a little angry, and intense in the way it always has been between them. Y/n kissed her ex-husband hard, her teeth sinking into his bottom lip and soothing the ache with her tongue until he eventually flipped her over onto her stomach.
"You can't be here by the time he wakes up tomorrow," Y/n managed to say. "I don't want to confuse him."
"I know," Harry said, lining himself up with her entrance. "But wouldn't it be so nice if I did?"
"Harryâ"
"Relax, baby, I'll abide by your rules," he said, his voice a soft caress. "Just let me have you tonight, and then I'll be gone."
Harry slid in with one smooth thrust, Y/n's mouth dropping open in response. She hadn't been stretched this way in months, and the feel of him inside her again as if nothing had changed...
"Fuck, Harry. I'mâI'm so close," she moaned, unable to say much more than that.
His movements were torturously slow, prolonging the climax he'd been teasing out of her on the couch. Then he leaned over her, his body pressing deliciously against hers.
"We may be separated, but you're still mine," he said, his words accented by his own pleasure. "These hips? Mine. Your tits? Mine. This little cunt? Well, she already knows. Absolutely drenching me. And tonight, I'm going to make sure you remember that."
Y/n could only whimper and wait to take whatever her ex-husband was willing to give her.
*.*
Y/n was having the best dream.
Sun streamed through the small crack in her bedroom curtains as she snuggled under the weight of the warmest, coziest blanket. She held onto it, wrapping it tighter around her, hoping to get a couple more minutes of sleep before her son eventually barged in and demanded they start their day.
She had a million things to do, but none of it seemed to matter while she slept. She felt relaxed in a way she hadn't in a long time.
Then the dream seemed to change. The cozy blanket became an arm draped over her, a leg tangled between her own, and a firm body pressed against her back. The unknown form wrapped around her began to kiss along her bare back, the arm tightening its grip around her waist. Her stomach flipped as a hand began to play with her breast.
She hadn't had one of those dreams in a long time, either.
Before the dream could go any further, Y/n regrettably began to feel the pinpricks of consciousness. But as she blinked her eyes open, she still felt that weight of another body next to hers, of someone other than herself occupying her bed.
It was then that last night made an appearance in her mind, recalling every dirty detail of how she'd given into her ex-husband.
"Good morning."
Harry's voice was low and gruff as if he'd only just woken up himself. The puffs of his breaths dusted over Y/n's skin and sent goosebumps all over. She didn't understand how her body, even while it was still waking up, was so responsive to him.
As casually as possible, she said, "You weren't supposed to stay over."
"Honestly, I don't even remember falling asleep," Harry admitted, though he made no move to leave her Y/n's bed.
"You have to go before he wakes up," she insisted, even if her body was completely against that idea. "He can't find you here. If he does, he'll have questions, andâ"
Before Y/n could even finish, she heard the soft patter of feet against soft carpet. Then her door creaked open, and the light of her life appeared.
"Daddy!"
Y/n rested her hands over her face, but not before seeing Harry's broad grin out of the corner of her eye, one that was nearly identical to the little boy at the foot of the bed.
"Hey, buddy," Harry said, his voice less husky than it was just moments ago. "What are you doing up so early, huh?"
"Why are you in bed with Mommy?" the boy asked, climbing into bed with his parents and wriggling around until he was snuggled between them.
Wasn't that the question, Y/n thought, though she was in no rush to help Harry.
"Mummy and Daddy decided to have a sleepover," Harry explained.
"Oh. Well, why didn't you invite me?"
"Because..." Y/n felt Harry's gaze on her, but she was not inclined to dig him out of this hole. Their night was over. It was a new day, which meant everything was back to the way it was before Harry came over last night. "Because I wanted to surprise you this morning. We're all going to spend the day together. Just the three of us."
"Yay!"
"What?"
Y/n glared over the top of her son's head as he half-hugged half-tackled Harry from sheer excitement. This was definitely not reverting back to their normal routine of co-parenting and seeing each other only when it was necessary. Harry, who looked thoroughly pleased with himself, slid out of bed with their boy still latched into him.
Thankfully, he was wearing underwear, but that didn't help Y/n much. She couldn't help but stare at his muscles flexing as he stood and stretched while he held their son. At all the tattoos that littered his body and the mess of curls on his head. He had no right to look this good in the morning, especially when Y/n knew for a fact that she always looked haggard no matter what when she first woke up.
Not that her appearance in front of her ex mattered to her.
"Come on, let's start with making your mum some breakfast. I'm thinking...waffles?"
"Do not make a mess of my kitchen, Harry," Y/n warned, not even bothering to protest the idea in its entirety. She wouldn't have been able to tell her son no even if he tried. Not with how excited he looked at the prospect of spending the day with his dad.
"We'll clean up after ourselves, I promise," Harry said with a wink in your direction. "You stay there and rest. I know you had a...long night."
Y/n threw a pillow at Harry's retreating form before flopping back into her bed. She had half a mind to strut right over to him and prove him wrong, but, well, the dull ache between her legs was starting to make itself known, and the damage of her son seeing Harry in her bed was already done. She might as well stay in bed and take the morning off if Harry was offering.
Sighing, Y/n ran a tired hand over her face as one realization after another made themselves known.
Everything about last night and this morning was messy and would no doubt bring about consequences and difficult conversations she wasn't inclined to have. There were questions she didn't want to ask or know the answer to, but one thing was abundantly clear:
She was well and truly fucked.

______________________________________________________________
Sometimes you really fit into Figure 8. Sometimes you all did. Like when John B was off with Sarah and he was wearing the clothes that she had bought him to go out golfing or go to brunch at the yacht club. Or when Kie was dragged to a kook event by her parents at the country club. Pope wore his suit when he had different scholarship and college interviews- and he really gave the kook boys a run for their money with how good he looked in his steamed suit. JJ was the least likely to really look like he would ever fit in on Figure 8, and that was because he never wanted to. He reserved his âmoney suitâ, as he called it, for when he had to work as a busboy, and occasionally picked up other gigs. You, however, were fitting in more often than you would have liked.Â
You tucked your white cashmere sweater into your long, green pleated skirt. Letting out a small huff as you sprayed your perfectly curled hair one more time. Throwing your purse over your shoulder, you trudged down your hallway, your sneakers cost more than $400. You could still remember how your jaw dropped when you saw the pricetag, and apparently the kooks ate these shoes up. They needed them in every color, every new style that came out. It was madness, if you were being honest. It was like they were just giving away money.Â
Thatâs what it seemed like, at least. You had been working at a retail store in the main strip of Figure 8 for over a year now. It was the only way you could afford the clothes you were wearing. You got a steep discount off the price, and you knew how to shop sales better than anyone.Â
Your kook masquerade was always squished the moment you walked out to your car. The old beat up Honda that was always parked out front was nothing like what a kook would drive. It was too old. A 2005? The kooks didnât know what anything from that year was- maybe only their participation trophies from little league that had the year engraved, that was about it.Â
Unlocking the car, you tossed your bag onto the passenger seat, closing the door and buckling up your seatbelt.Â
âPlease start, Hilda..â You mumbled, closing your eyes and taking a deep breath as your hand turned the key in the ignition. She did, as usual- but you would never forget the time that she broke down. You cried for the ten minutes it took John B and JJ to rescue you. They were like your own little mechanics. Pope had called you in the car for the ten minutes while you sobbed and tried to calm you down- it didnât work. Nothing worked until you saw your car fixed. You still owed them for saving your ass that day, regardless of how many times they assured you it was really nothing.
Crossing over the bridge from The Cut to Figure 8, you sighed: traffic. You knew by now the traffic was always bad as you headed into the main strip of town. It was the most popular place. Coffee shops, restaurants, stores.. Who wouldnât be there if they had the money and time? Yeah, the coffee was overpriced and no one knew how to drive in their expensive cars, but it was still nice. Nicer than The Cut where people revved their engines when you scurried across the street.
â
It took you a half hour to finally pull into the parking lot behind your store. Saturdays were always the worst traffic wise, but boy, was it a good sales day. Checking the time, you bit your lip as you contemplated running to the cafe a few shops down to get a coffee. Technically you had time- you were always early. You had a fear of being late if you were being honest. You knew it looked bad, and it wasnât hard for you to just leave a little early for wherever you were going. It took you two minutes to walk to the cafe, and you would give yourself ten minutes to be in the cafe, another two minutes to walk back, and you had twenty minutes until you had to clock in. What if the cafe was busy? What if it took you fifteen minutes in there?Â
You slammed the car door and walked towards the Cove Cafe. The bell dinged as you walked in, a smile pressed to your lips as you pushed your sunglasses to your head. It wasnât busy. What a relief. You smiled at the barista as you walked up to the counter. You and Gabriella had become good friends from your constant stops to the overpriced coffee shop.Â
âThe usual?â She asked with a grin, scribbling onto the cup as you nodded your head. You still had ten minutes to get back to the shop before you had to clock in. You smiled and waved back to Gabriella as you left the shop, sipping on the drink that had become a staple to your routine.
â
This Saturday was not a good day for sales. The weather mustâve been too nice, or everyone had gone to the mainland. The traffic you had fought through died down, and the small shop was deserted. Main Street in general was deserted. You and your co-worker, Abigail were basically staring at each other for four hours. It was painful at this point. You both had resorted to hiding off to the side hall to watch Netflix shows, peering your heads out when you heard the door open.Â
Most of the time it was one or two people wandering in- usually tourons who just looked around and pulled you away from the show. It was your turn to walk out there when the door dinged, watching as two people walked in. Your eyes squinted as you looked to the security camera before heading out from behind the curtain.Â
You tried to hide your surprise- and disgust- as your eyes glanced over to see Topper Thorton and Rafe Cameron in the small store. What did they want? Were they making rounds because Sarah was complaining about something John B had said? You knew it wasnât a good idea John B was hanging around her. Were they threatening your group?Â
Was it too late to shove Abigail out here? Was it too late to lock the doors and pretend you never opened? Were you allowed to not greet them? Spit in their faces?Â
âDo you have this in a large?â Rafeâs question knocked you from your thoughts, blinking a few times before you furrowed your brows.Â
âLet me go check for you.â You smiled at the two boys before heading behind the curtain where Abigail was. âHow did I get so unlucky to have to deal with Topper and Rafe? How come you got a Hollywood directors cousin and I get two assholes who arenât going to spend any money?â A groan escaped your lips before you brought yourself down the stairs to the stockroom.Â
âÂ
âSo youâre going to take the three shirts, the sweater and the two pants and then weâre going to order you the polo in the salmon color, and the sneakers, right?â You ran by him one more time.Â
âYeah, and ship it to the store if you can.â Rafe nodded, tapping his American Express Platinum card against the wooden counter. You nodded, typing away on the ipad register. It was a relief to finally be getting them out of the store, though they were a lot less of a pain then you had originally thought they would be. In fact, they were really respectful a complete 180 from what you were used to experiencing. They had hung back up everything they had tried on, and made sure to get a full glance of everything they could want in a different size or color before making you run to the stockroom once they were aware it was in a basement.
The only awkward part of the whole interaction was when you had absentmindedly walked back to the fitting rooms and saw Rafe shirtless as he spoke to Topper about the shirt he had on.Â
âPants fit well.â You awkwardly smiled, diverting your eyes from Rafeâs toned chest. You didnât hate having them in the store, and he was about to drop a lot of money which was only going to be more money in your pocket.
âYouâre all set. Everything should be here by Wednesday the latest. Iâll give you a call when they get here.â You smiled, watching him tap the heavy card against the card reader. His blue eyes glanced up to meet your own eyes.Â
âCould you text me, actually? The number on file is my cell.â Your eyes glanced to Topper as he smirked, eyes glancing your way. To be honest, you were surprised. It wasnât like you werenât allowed to text customers for outreach or order updates- but it was the look Rafe was giving you, it was the smirk Topper had plastered to his face, it was the way Rafe was leaning on the counter.Â
â
âAnd then as if spending an hour with them wasnât bad enough, he asked me to text him when his order got to the store!â You were pacing in the living room of the chateau. You had driven straight there after work, it was a bit of a usual for all of you. After work on Saturdays, everyone would meet at the chateau and unwind, usually a beer or two, and pizza.Â
âWhy are you dressed like youâre from the 60âs?â JJ asked, as if he hadnât been looking at you for the past fifteen minutes you had been ranting.Â
âThat isnât the point, idiot.â Kiara chimed in, shaking her head at JJâs comment. âLove the sweater by the way.â She smiled.Â
âDude, it retails for like three hundred, I almost threw up when a woman asked me where it was in the store the last time I wore it and then she bought it in the three colors we have.â You smiled back, finally plopping onto the couch next to JJ. His eyes were wide as he looked to your sweater, before petting it.Â
âFuck, itâs soft.âÂ
âItâs cashmere and get your grubby hands off of it. You probably have oil or beer on your hands, and itâs dry clean only.â Your hand smacked at his.
âSo whenâs your first date with Rafe.â JJ teased, a groan leaving your lips as your head fell back.
âWhere the hell did a date even come into this? If he gets my number thatâs just another way to threaten us.âÂ
âI wish John B and Sarah were here to hear all this.. Sarah would lose it.â Kie laughed. âBut, we would probably get to the bottom of it. She would just text him and see what was up. Either weâre overthinking it, or weâre perfectly on track for whatever his twisted mind is thinking.âÂ
âSo are you going to wear cashmere on your date with him? Do you think heâll pay?â JJ continued, a grin planted to his face. He wasnât going to let it die down, which you should have expected. Jeez, where was Pope, John B and Sarah when you needed them?Â
âÂ
Your fingers hovered over your phone after you had texted Rafe, the chat bubble signaling he was responding - and fast. There was no need to be nervous about whatever he was saying, it was your job, after all. Texting him as he requested for the order he placed - you hadnât done anything wrong or out of the ordinary.Â
You jumped a bit feeling your phone vibrate in your hand, eyes scanning the text saying he would probably show up right before you closed because he was busy. Your lips pulled into a tight line, preparing yourself to have to stay past close. You hearted the message without even thinking, all sense of professionalism threw itself out the window. âFuck,â you muttered under your breath, too late now to undo what had been done.Â
â
The store was in nearly perfect condition, you had told Abigail to head home, that you would wait out Rafeâs arrival on your own, assuring her he would surely only be about 5-10 minutes. You finger spaced the racks twice, re-folded your tables and even dusted off the mannequins as you waited for his arrival. It was now thirty minutes past close, the doors had been locked, your fingers tapped along the desk as a sigh escaped your lips, eyes rolling. Pulling your phone out of pocket, your fingers fired off a message to Rafe.Â
hey! iâve gotta close up, weâre open from 9-7 tomorrow, just tell the associate youâre picking up :)Â
Grabbing your things from the back, your keys twirled around your fingers, jumping as a figure was looking into the glass doors of the store. A gasp escaped your lips as your eyes looked to Rafeâs, a smile pressed to his lips as he caught the panic course through your body. A small debate ran through your brain, should you even let him have his things? He should and could wait until the following day. Teach him a lesson on being punctual.Â
His hand knocked on the door, smile still pressed tight to his lips. It was almost cocky, like he knew that you would let him in. Before even making a conscious decision, your feet were carrying you to the door and unlocking it.Â
âMaybe we should add a watch to your order, seems like you could use it.â Your tone was a bit harsher than you intended, but at this point, he was wasting your time. Holding the door open, you quickly locked it after he entered.Â
âIâm only thirty minutes late.âÂ
âYou knew when we closed, youâre abusing my kindness.âÂ
âIs that what you call the attitude?â Your eyes were glaring at this point, feet carrying you quickly to the back where Rafeâs items were packaged neatly, a bow around the handle of the bag and all. Grabbing it, you gasped yet again as he had been closer to the curtain to the back than anticipated. A chuckle escaping his lips. âYou look like a deer in headlights.âÂ
âCan you just take your things and go? Iâve spent enough time in this store.â A huff escaped your lips as you shoved the bag to Rafe, already walking towards the front door to escort him out. âAnd donât worry, Iâll send you watches during my next shift so you can work on being on time.âÂ
âSo you want to see me again?â Rafeâs eyebrows raised, smirk pressing to his lips. He clearly was in no rush to leave, or leave without frustrating you any bit he could.Â
âRight now I would love nothing more than to watch you leave, Rafe.â Unlocking the door, and opening it you motion for him to leave, your patience growing thin as he took his time walking from the store. âThanks for shopping with us today.â You mutter before closing the door behind him and locking it.Â
â
Scrolling through your phone, a text pulled your brows together.Â
so, howâd i look walking away?

November 6, 2024 | Rafe Cameron
masterlist found here
pairing - Rafe x reader word count - 1,827 warnings - political talk, anti-T*ump rhetoric A/N - Who would've thought the shit show state of our world would inspire me to write again. I know for a lot of us everything feels really broken right now, and I know it may seem silly to some, but for me, writing feels like healing, even if it's just something like this. So here you all are. Rafe probably votes red, but here's a world where he doesn't. Also, if you're a T*umper, go ahead and unfollow me. I can't have any of that in my life. I'm so serious.
summary - The results of the 2024 election hit you pretty hard, and you end up taking your rage out on Rafe. Turns out, Rafe's hopes for the future looked a lot like yours.
You and Rafe didnât talk about politics. You knew better than to broach the topic with him, because you werenât naive. One glance at him and anyone could guess how he voted.
But that didnât mean you had to like it.
The two of you had been dating for about six months, and for the most part, it was smooth sailing. It was gossip fuel for most people on the island for a few weeks -you being a pogue and Rafe being ⊠who he was- but like most drama in Kildaire, it didnât stay at the forefront of peopleâs minds for long before another thing came and stole back everyoneâs attention.
And the thing on everyoneâs mind right now was the election. The election that had you donned in blue on your way to the polls, a huge smile on your face as you filled in the bubble that would make history. Hope filled you in a way you were sure it never had before.
Until the next day.
Waking up and opening social media to see the results had already come in was enough to break your spirit completely. How could this have happened? How could the country have failed so many people?
Then again, how had you been so naive to believe in the possibility of any other outcome?
You shut yourself off from the world for most of the day. You went to work and gave polite smiles and nods to your coworkers as needed, but you did your best to spend the majority of your time locked in your office, alone. You didnât dare to open social media, knowing every MAGA post from the bigots of the Figure 8 would bring tears to your eyes.
It wasnât until you were at home on your couch that you decided to brave Instagram. Before scrolling through your feed, you added a black screen with a simple blue heart to your story and wrote the words, When we fight, we win.
You thought it was harmless. A simple story that showed your feelings without being overly dramatic. The last thing you wanted to do was act irrational by doing something crazy like storming the capitol. Because that would just be insane.
Unfortunately, the people who followed you saw it as anything but harmless. They saw it as an opening to send you the most heinous, revolting messages you had ever read. Your notifications blew up within minutes, and some of them were so borderline terrifying that you locked your phone and threw it across the room, once again leaving you in a puddle of tears.
You heard your front door open, and you cursed to yourself. In all the chaos of the news, it escaped your mind that it was Wednesday, and Rafe always brought pizza to your apartment on Wednesdays. You had once mentioned in passing that you liked a pick-me-up halfway through a week, and Rafe took it upon himself to provide you with that. Normally, it was one of your favorite parts of the week. Today, Rafe was one of the last people you wanted to see.
âBabe!â he called out upon his entrance. âI got your favorite!â
You met him in the kitchen, and by one look at your face, Rafeâs own expression dropped. âWhatâs going on?â
You swallowed back the lump in your throat. âI think you should go.â
âWhat?â he said, dropping the pizza on the counter and walking over to you. With each step he took toward you, you took one step back. He stopped quickly, a frown painted on his face. âWhatâs wrong, baby?â
The words made something snap inside you, and your fists clenched at your sides. âWhatâs wrong?â you repeated. âWhatâs wrong? How about fucking everything, Rafe! Everythingâs wrong, and you not seeing that is part of the problem! You are part of the problem!â
Rafe was, in a word, flabbergasted. He ran through the past 24 hours, trying to think of something he had done wrong, but he was coming up short. âOkay, Iâm-â He let out an exasperated laugh. âIâm trying to understand, but youâve got to give me something more here. What did I do?â
âYou-â You let out a huff of a breath and ended up speaking through gritted teeth. âYou and your stupid fucking MAGA Kook friends voted for a convicted felon to run our country! You voted for a man who wants to throw away my rights. You voted for a man who has raped a multitude of women and brags about it!â
Rafeâs eyes were wide as he held his hands up and shook his head. âHang on-â
âNo, Rafe!â you shouted, pushing him back as he tried to get closer to you again. âFor the entire time weâve dated, Iâve danced around the talk of politics, because I knew better. I knew a rich ass white guy from the south would vote for another rich ass white guy to run our country, but I guess I naively thought it wouldnât matter. That the poor guys would get a win for fucking once this time. For once I thought the good guys would win and that a white man would have to face the consequences of his actions. But you-â You laughed bitterly. âYou of all people know that privileged ass white men never ever have to face the consequences of their actions.â
You were hitting him where it hurt, and you knew it, but you were hurt. You and every woman like you had been holding in years of pain and hurt, and for you and many others, today was the day it was all going to come out.
âBaby, if you just let me-â
âLet you?â you laughed incredulously. âYou and your fellow MAGA guys have clearly shown me I donât have to let you do anything anymore.â
âWhat does that mean?â he asked.
You fished your phone out of your pocket, unlocked it, and shoved it in his face to show him all of the nasty messages you were receiving. Things like, âYour body, my choice,â âwhomp whomp go make me a sandwich,â and âGuess what? Men win againâ had flooded your DMs, and while you didnât know it, Rafe was clocking every username and making a very specific list in his head.
âSo maybe you can understand why Iâm angry, Rafe,â you said, taking the phone back out of his hand and putting it in your pocket again. âI thought I could cancel out your vote, but I guess I forgot that meant you could cancel mine.â
âBa-â
âI want you to leave, Rafe.â
âBut I didnât-â
âFucking, go, Rafe!â you shouted. âLet me be angry and let me be alone!â
With a clenched jaw, Rafe gave a short nod. âOkay,â he whispered. âFine.â It looked like he wanted to say more, but he refrained, instead turning around and heading out the door, leaving you in a mess of tears.
The next day, you called off from work. Maybe it was dramatic, but you didnât care. You knew if one person even looked at you in a way you didnât like, youâd lose any composure you had, and you couldnât afford to lose your job for yelling at your boss.
You had the full intention to stay in bed all day, but the relentless knock at your door around 10AM proved that to be impossible. You felt some sense of relief, knowing it at least wouldnât be another political petitioner.
Instead, perhaps just as unfortunately, it was Rafe.
You let out a heavy sigh. âWhat do you want, Rafe?â
He held out his hand which had a coffee cup in it from your favorite shop. âI went to your work, but your boss said you were sick,â he said. âI bought you coffee.â You took it, but didnât say anything -just looked at him with raised eyebrows, as if to say, Anything else? âCan we please talk?â he said.
âI donât know what there is to say, Rafe,â you sighed. Still, you stepped aside and let him in, not wanting your neighbors to bear witness to whatever argument was about to ensue. âI know weâre different -Iâve always known that- but I donât think I can handle being this kind of different anymore.â You plopped yourself onto the sofa, expecting Rafe to sit next to you. Instead, he crouched in front of you so he was just slightly looking up at you.
âBaby, I didnât vote for him.â
Your lips parted slightly in shock, and you felt tears instantly pool in your eyes.
âWhat?â you whispered.
âYeah, of course I didnât vote for him,â he said. He reached up to turn around the hat he was wearing backwards to reveal a Harris-Walz cap, and you let out a noise that was a mix of a gasp and a little laugh. âI know Iâve fucked up before baby,â he said. âAnd in other elections, yeah, I usually vote red. But this-â He shook his head and squeezed your knees. âThis is different. And I know that. And Iâd be an absolute moron to think that tax cuts for me are more important than basic rights for you.â
You moved to kneel on the floor next to him and held his face in your hands before leaning forward to place a soft kiss to his lips. When you pulled back, you kept your forehead against his. âI was so mean to you yesterday,â you whispered. âI didnât-â
âIt wasnât anything I didnât deserve,â he said. âI know that I am living in a world that was pretty much tailor made for me. And I know I should be in fucking prison for all the shit Iâve done, and so should he. And I know that none of what Iâm saying right now changes the bullshit Iâve done, but I figured I should at least use all this fucking privilege I have and try to help people who donât have it. Because you-â He paused to press a kiss to your lips. â-have taught me so much about being a good person. And Iâm not going to vote against that.â
âI wasnât a good person yesterday,â you mumbled.
âYou were reacting to an unfortunately historic event,â he said. âYou had every right to lose it. And you can keep losing it, and I will be by your side for every minute of it, okay?â
You nodded and gave him a soft smile. âOkay.â
He smiled back and nodded. âOkay.â
You and Rafe decided to spend the rest of the day together, sometimes talking, sometimes just sitting in the quiet. When you suggested putting on a movie, Rafe agreed. He let you choose, no complaints, and watched as you searched for the Barbie movie. You cried at all the usual parts, sometimes a bit harder than normal, but Rafe understood.
It is literally impossible to be a woman.
