im very normal about fuuta in general but i dont think im ever going to emotionally recover from his fire motif and what it represents for his character and how he reflects the greater theme of justice so that means i must rant about it

(more under the cut because this got longer than i expected whoopsies)

so anyway fire is pretty obviously supposed to be symbolic of his passion for justice right? that fire is all over the place in bring it on. he's wielding it to take down enemies, his signature weapon is a flaming sword. it's what he uses to lead the campaign against the people he's after, the people he's deemed in the wrong.

it's a fucking flaming sword, it's badass as hell!!!! it's what a hero of justice, a knight, would use!!!! it's cool as shit, it's his symbol of justice.

that's how he sees his justice in trial 1.

he's righteous, he wants so badly to believe he was a hero, he was doing it all for a good cause, for justice. his passion for justice was a tool he used to meet those ends, to be a hero, to wave it valiantly in the face of enemies.

the fire, however, is conspicuously absent once he's noticed the blood on his hands

interestingly, despite backdraft as a song title being much more related to his fire motif than bring it on, fire is actually surprisingly absent from the mv's visuals. fire, as in actual orange burning fire, doesn't show up much at all in backdraft except for when both fuuta and his victim begin turning to ashes, and a short bit near the end right after the last chorus when the spraycan explodes in fuuta's face. you know what the mv does show a lot of though?

smoke. and ash. the byproducts of a fire, the byproducts of fuuta's passion for justice.

bringing it back to firefighting for a moment: as many people have already pointed out, backdraft as a firefighting term refers to when a fire that has consumed all available oxygen suddenly explodes when more oxygen is made available, such as when a window or door breaks. the thing about fire hazards, though, is if the fire and the heat don't do someone in, usually it's the smoke. the smoke inhalation causes breathing difficulties and suffocation, making it even more difficult for a person to escape the fire.

in backdraft, instead of fire itself, what we're shown is these byproducts of a fire. the smoke is damaging to human health, and the ash shows that the fire has burned things up and caused destruction, in this case killing someone. all we're shown is the negative results of a fire, in sharp contrast to its badass, positive portrayal in bring it on.

hell, even fuuta himself starts turning to ashes and the spraycan explodes in his face, showing how even he is experiencing the negative results of a fire that has gotten out of his control, how even he has gotten burned by his passion for justice. or, is it es' desire for justice?

fuuta's justice and es' justice, it's all the same in his head now, he directly tells es that they're the same, that we're the same. it's all the same hunger for justice that ends up causing harm even if that wasn't the intention.

you know that saying that fire is a good servant but a bad master? i think that's pretty applicable to fuuta's situation. his passion for the pursuit of justice was great when it was still a tool, a sword he could wield, after all he did manage to shed light on some people's wrongs and bring them to justice. but once it exploded, when it became a backdraft that even he could no longer control, it did more damage than he intended.

it burned even him, it killed a middle schooler. and he recognizes that in backdraft. he only shows us the ways fire that becomes a hazard can go wrong.

it's just. fire is such a good metaphor for the message of fuuta's character and his arc. it's an amazing illustration of how dangerous it is when you feed a desire for justice too much, when you forget to put a boundary on how you handle that fire. eventually the fire spreads just like how passion for justice becomes zealotry, until more and more things fall under what you consider to be 'punishable' by your standards and goes out of control to hurt people that probably didn't deserve it. it's a warning to set proper boundaries on our own definition and desire for justice and what's 'right' so the good intentions doesn't spiral into harm. it's a reflection of our attitudes towards milgram as the audience responsible for their justice and forgiveness. it's amazing i love it i love fuuta's fire symbolism i love fuuta's character arc and i love milgram's writing so so so much

Here's my Trial 3 MILGRAM Cover predictions! The MILGRAM cover songs are usually picked from DECO*27's popular lineup, so I tried to limit my picks to songs from his catalogue that are a little more well-known! They also tend to me more from his modern era (post-2016) so forgive me :(

Haruka: Honestly: I have no idea. Haruka's been pretty random with his covers. Just to have guessed something, maybe 118 due to its instrumental. If you've got any better guesses feel free to add onto my post!

Yuno: I feel like Yuno will likely cover more love songs/songs about relationships - My guess right now is Love Words III (any of the Love Words songs could do tbh, but this is the one I think might fit her the most) Rabbit Hole (for the more sexual relationship theme) or Heart a la mode (just because).

Fuuta: Fuuta's covers tend to be kind of random tbh aside from them all being hugely popular deco songs LOL. My current guesses go to Chimera (for the like-share thing. social media.. yknow...) and considering its popularity, maybe even Dilemma. doubt it tho so dont take my word for it

Muu: Muu's cover theme is kind of hard to pin down, so I just went with a song I think might fit her voice. Theory of Negativity would fit her vibe tbh. It's kind of self-depreciative, kind of very much not self-depreciative.

Shidou: Okay, here's a super basic pick: Ghost Rule. A lot of characters get assigned GR as a future cover because it's probably the most well-known deco song that hasn't been covered yet. I think Shidou's covers would fit its theme of lying and the energy that he brought to Liar Dance and Delusion Tax.

Mahiru: Wouldn't you know it, her cover songs are all based around unhealthy relationships... My current guess goes to Zombies. I personally think Mahiru's VA and a more sickly sweet synthpoppy sound could really fit this song!! Another option would be Pseudo-Hope Syndrome which is a little less upbeat than Zombies and more mellow, but who knows what T3 Mahiru might look like. TONS of DECO songs are about unhealthy relationships, it could really be anything.

Kazui: I know a lot of people would like him to cover songs about the topic of lies but that's already Shidou's thing... Neo-Neon and Coward Montblanc are both breakup songs, so it's either another breakup song for him like Fakery Tale or maybe a song about failed relationships like Relationship Scramble (which i feel fits him very well)!

Amane: Another character I find extremely hard to have a guess at. If we're going with the more innocent theme, I can imagine Yume Yume... is it because of the MV? Yes. I feel like however Amane develops will really influence her covers like we saw with her covering Animal in T2.

Mikoto: Kind of also at a loss here, so here's a shot in the dark: (Not A) Devil with Mikoto's duality motif seems fitting. I'd love to hear his voice on this track!

Kotoko: Since Kotoko's second trial song hasn't been announced yet, I have no clear lineup to go off of :-(. Probably something more energetic like HIBANA. I think it'd be super cool if she covered Undercover, actually! Though that's probably not happening.. one can dream

For some reason, despite how unreasonable and problematic it most likely was, Es was unable to find a written rule stopping you from requesting an instrument, and Jacklope had been too busy eating when they asked him about it to really care- and so now, in prison, you had your hands on a fender bass guitar, along with the included amp and cords you had begged Es for. 

The moment they reluctantly gave you all the required equipment, you were practically bouncing off the walls with excitement, sprinting to the cafeteria area at full speed.

By the time you arrived, unfortunately not as fast as you’d originally hoped from the weight of the amp, you could see Yuno and Mahiru chatting away near one of the vending machines. Through one of the windows, you could see Shidou and Kazui taking a smoke in the spot Es had set aside for them to use, and most importantly, right by the entrance, Fuuta sat, silently chewing away at a grilled cheese at one of the tables. This was it. Your chance.

You zipped around the cafeteria for a moment before finding a plug. swiftly shoving the amp’s cord inside before turning the volume up all the way. Whilst you fumbled with the cords for a moment, Yuno glanced up at you- meeting your eyes for a moment before a devious grin spread across her face, and suddenly both her and Mahiru were off distracting a certain redhead as you connected the amp to the bass.

The moment you had everything set up, you tugged the guitar strap over your shoulder, spared one glance over the volume gauge to make sure it was as loud as could be- and then raised your hand into the air, pic grasped between your fingers.

“Fuuta! Check this out!!”

Said boy snapped his head in you direction, confused until he spotted you standing triumphantly on a table with a sick little grin, and he deadpanned immediately. Yuno was already struggling to hold in her laughter and you brought your hand down, strumming at the bass with unreasonable speed as the volume blasted throughout the prison. You could barely hear his protests and complaints with how loud everything was turned up, but kept playing nonetheless, most likely to Es’s dismay. They would probably get a pay cut. Do they even… get paid..?

You blinked, and suddenly the redhead was walking towards you, face contorted in annoyance as he huffed something about how pathetic this was, barely audible. You simply grinned, jumping off the table you’d been using as your own little stage and walking right up to him, guitar pic still in hand as you played. 

He scowled at you, crossed his arms, and went to pull down his mask. “Give it a rest, will ya? I’m tryna eat here-”

You smirked. “Can’t hear you!!!”

And by tomorrow you were doing the same thing in the same spot- probably for many days to come until Es found an excuse to rip it away from you. But that would be a while yet, and Fuuta was to easy to annoy to pass up such an opportunity.

the thing that drew me to him (and got me into milgram as a whole) in the first place was the fact that his songs go absolutely insanely hard. and theyre exactly my taste in music

hes an angry little guy and i am drawn to angry characters like a moth to a fucking flame, i have NO idea why, its facinating to me

i also think hes not actually THAT uhh aggressive with like. "people who do bad things are scum" i think he just played it up to fit in with his friends and then at some point he forgot he was playing it up if that makes sense.

HI VINCENT. AHHH ITS SO MUCH. i'll start out w/ the stuff i dont like first uhm i really hate tht they r going the DID mikoto route.. it was expected but it still sucks to see them basically outright confirming it. its really terrible to ppl w/ dissociative disorders n just makes me mad. also feels like a cheap way to envoke mystery out of a character. i also dont like the direction they took kotoko. it seemed out out of character? especially for her to attack amane, it just feels random. but i really do like fuuta's reaction, he seems like he's still trying to hang on to his warped perception of his actions but his facade is quickly cracking. i also think yuno is interesting since her attitude has barely changed, it seems she doesnt care abt the judgement set upon her all tht much. uhmm haruka and muu. their friendship seems sweet but also im worried abt them both.. it just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth ig. especially since haruka's murder is a lot more up to interpretation and how muu seems to be a huge influence on haruka's thoughts n actions BUT WHO KNOWS. i like the changes in shidou a lot. he seems to have slightly changed his attitude n now hopes to be able to stay unpunished or at least alive, in order to save the other prisoners. i dont have much to say abt kazui im sorry he seems to have almost stayed the same sob. mahiru is interesting in the way her foundation of love is giving away right under her n she seems to just be accepting it. and finally amane. i think a lot of ppl expected her to start to question n maybe even start to let go of the beliefs her cult instilled in her n so voted her guilty but its really not tht simple. she's just a kid, a kid raised in such a way tht she was abused and made to believe her cult's ways r the best way to live, and they r everything she needs. so when others disagree, she will react in the same way she was taught, like wanting to punish shidou for healing the others. im really worried for her honestly. im excited to see fuuta's mv the most probably as well as haruka's. and to see what deco songs they'll sing. uhmm yeah i think thts it. sorry this is so long im crazy

theres alot to talk about uhm so i will make this very very short (its literally almost 3 am im tired lmao,,, so much to talk about,,,, so little time,,,,)

their similarities

es and mikoto (and his system) share a very similiar lifestyle, for example

overworking themselves (also getting stressed over work) (mikoto's is proved in both of his songs and the undercover scene) (es' is proved in minigram 41 iirc (because its a minigram, it will be made into a more comedy like scene) and proved with this line from fuuta's t2 vd iirc "Yet I've been dealing with it this whole time! I've been desperately thinking about all of the prisoners, including you! So I don't think I was ever wrong. No matter what hell I make this place to be, I will not run away! I won't make someone else deal with it!")

obeying those who are above them (mikoto is most obviously his boss (although john hates them)) (es is milgram and most likely the milgram administrators (shown in the novel))

amnesia (mikoto's amnesia is maybe forced amnesia or dissociative amnesia) (es' amnesia is caused by the memory wipe that might be electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) that is done by milgram)

appearance (mikoto is described as an average guy who doesn't look that bad and doesn't look that good either) (es is made to look "normal" (natural hair, natural eyes ect) so they can be seen as an average person (+they made them even more neutral by making them look gender neutral)

violent behaviour (this isn't for mikoto, but more for john. john tends to act really violent towards others he find annoying or stressful for mikoto. he does that in order to protect mikoto) (es acts violent as a defense mechanism to those who annoys or creeps them out. they do this in order to protect their fragile ego)

low empathy (well, i can just say that john has low empathy since he only cares about what mikoto feels and he would never understand how others do) (es' is proven with this line (i dont remember which vd but prob mahiru) "I don’t completely understand what you’re saying, but… Being in love and loving someone—are they really that important?")

being seen as emotionless (mido time yippe. in meme, mido can only be seen with a deadpan face. so uh, i guess he either doesn't know how to express himself well or dgaf) (es is well, proven alot in muu's vd (t1 and t2) and amane's vd (t2))

in neoplasm, es for the first time refers to themselves with a different 1st person pronoun, uchi (うち). uchi is usually used by people when talking to their family members or someone close to them. and the fact they're only using it when talking tl john instead of mikoto makes me ill because es knows john's struggles and how its similiar to theirs, making it even more easier to sympathize with him.

es is the first person to canonically accept mikoto's system without being ableist about it. they treated john like an actual person, not some sort of insane psychotic monster. even though john beat them up in t1, they seemed to easily move on from that incident and accept that it is what it is. this made john slightly shocked which is sad because he never received any sort of respect like this. its also kinda cute how john says he accepts (thinks it's okay) the name that es gave to him.

also not exactly neoplasm, but i want to compare john's behavior to es'. they both don't realize that they're actually a person who is kind(or respected) (john's is proved in neoplasm obviously) (es' is proven in YONAH "I'm... a kind person?.."

ALSO, i want to talk about john and es being sensitive when questioned their authority (and how they answer). i don't remember how it exactly went, but ig es asked or said something about him that made him say like uh "im a university graduate after all" which is a funny and childish response. when es gets questioned their authority, they always say "im the warden here! you're the prisoner." which is also an equaly childish response.

ALSO, i think its so nice but more bittersweet that es is just kinda hiding the existence of john and the others to mikoto just so he doesn't get more stressed than how he already is.

mikoto's little sister

might be a stretch but hear me out. mikoto said that his sister is a highschooler (es can be either a 3rd year in middle school or 1st year in high school). he said that his sister is hard-working like he is (the first point i made on this post). also uhh they look very similiar together (considering that mikoto's blond ends are very much likely dyed).

john and es arguing like siblings in this vd makes me happy in unexplainable ways.

similiar trauma

it is very very much implied that mikoto was abused by his father who ended up leaving them because of "work", this traumatic experience made him develop did. it's also implied that he went through sa from a gang member or coworker (the "fanservice" in meme is angled in a way to make it look like a camera, the start of meme also looks like mikoto capturing a camera (the screen effects)).

es most likely shares a similiar experience with mikoto. it's very much possible that the reason they always choose violence as a defense mechanism is because of their household. they could also be a csa survivor. in kazui's t2 vd, es states how they have a PERSONAL dislike for those who act on sexual urges. they're also visibly disgusted by kazui scrutinizing them, thinking that he's a creep. the reason they think kazui's a creep is not only because of him looking at them in a "weird way", its also because of their first interaction in t1. in the t1 kazui vd, they were welcomed with a large man restraining them randomly. it was also scary for them because the milgram protection barrier didn't work for a bit (until it did), making them still able to feel that kazui almost restrained them. there's also more proof to the ca and csa theory, which is how es dislikes getting touched or feeling skin to skin contact.
