Okay, review time!! If you are one of the oddballs who thinks you cant be critical of something you love I suggest you stop reading now before I ruffle your feathers. Iron flame, second in the empyrean series. I am gonna start with what I was not a fan of and then go into the shit I adored.

1) what in the actual fuck was the pacing of this book?? I can tell you what, it was non existent. There was none. Where I thought there was a lot of filler in the last book there was none in this one. We got snap shots of conversations and then *boom* more plot flew at you. The timeline of this book greatly suffered for it i think bc we end only a couple weeks, if that, after threshing, which happens sometimes in October. This book was actually so wild with times.

2) while it was a spectacular cliff hanger, xaden becoming venin pisses me off. Especially if Rebecca yarros isnt going to have him tell violet. Like if that small tid bit of a conversation we got wasnt him telling vi that he was venin then the entire romantic conflict of this book was rendered pointless and their going to be having the same fucking fight for the rest of the series and at rhat point I give up.

3) I understand that the revolution is trying to take down basgaith and make the world better or whatever the fuck but can someone actually formulate a real plan for me?? Because I feel like their mission is just, giving violet and xaden something to be pissed at each other about.

4) the entirety of cats character. I get that she was set up as a spin on the typical jealous ex. Like having her be bitter about xaden picking violet over her but OH WAIT it wasnt actually about the man it was about the crown, oohh not like other girls. Im a writer too I see the point. I dont care. I think it was trashy. If you wanted her to be a bitter spiteful ex then have her be a bitter spiteful ex, the whole crown thing was shallow.

OKAY haters your time is up now onto the shit that made my heart hurt with joy and sadness

1) xadens arc in this book. I really liked that he went from "transparency is never gonna happen" to losing his fucking mind over violet and giving her everything. I love feral men and he qualifies. I think his arc was really well done and i liked it.

2) I appericiate that violet stuck to her guns for this book. She wouldnt let xaden off without a fight and I loved that. She made him bow and scrape and I was eating it up. It was spectacular.

3) the throne room scene. Violet on the throne. "Im making a temporary point not a lasting vow of maschocism" xaden being feral.

4) that gets its own point actually, just xaden being completely feral this entire book healed a part of my soul.

5) andarna's little speech at the end where she was like "I waited for you violet" made me ugly cry. That was just so hopelessly good I loved it. Andarna in general heals my heart but that part was just *chefs kiss*

6) tarin being completely and utterly ready to eat people this entire book. Just, at every turn "I want lunch their pissing me off " was spectacular

7) every scene their squad was in. Rihannon, violet, sawyer and ridoc are my roman empire. Their bond is so amazing. The fact that they launched a rescue mission for violet. Rihannon being ready to kill xaden at every turn. Ridoc being so platonically and adorably in love with violet. Just- augh happy cries happy cries. I love it all. Their so special tbh.

8) I love xaden actually, just, the whole book every scene hes in lives in my brain.

9) I liked that we saw a small bit of violet being feral this book too. I hope that we get more of that in future books. I want more of violet losing her fucking mind. Hot, badass women covered in blood

10) Liam. Fucking Liam. When violet was kidnapped and Liam was there. Now, do I logically understand that he was a hallucination, yes, do i care?? No. He was a gift from Maleck I will be hearing no critiques on that. It was so fucking sweet and amazing. I love violet and Liam and Liam being dead so horribly breaks my heart. I loved Liam. Liams death lives rent free in my skull.

The Regis Somnorum won't leave him alone, and as he tries to follow that thread, a whole mysterious tapestry unfolds, putting everything he knows, or thought he knew, into question. (This fic is a fucking delight, it's just KEEPS feeding you "oh shit" moments and suspense and revelations and the pacing just keeps you on the edge of your SEAT. Again, IGNORE the WIP status I BEG OF YOU, read it, devour it)

This Rough Magic by @avelera (Mature - WIP - 36k so far - Rescue fic with a twist) Hob Gadling never fancied himself a mage or a warlock, but dabbled enough in the occult to pick up a few tricks over the years, all in the hope to communicate with his Stranger. A stranger, he later discovers, who is trapped under Roderick The Fucking Magus Burgess's manor. Now, he may not be the best magic wielder there is.... but Burgess doesn't know that, does he? (There are some VERY clever things in this fic, everyone is written to a T, I love a fic where my loathing of Burgess can burn from the brightest flame and at the same time have him not like a cartoon villain but a full human being! Can't wait to see where that goes!)

if you just let me (have you, love you) by Lost_Elf (Explicit - 25k - Human AU - Adult Film Actors AU (I see you tumblr, restricting words these days, I see you) Both very prominent in their own niches of the Internet, Dom-BDSM-oriented Dream and Vanilla-centered Hob cross paths and plan what could be (or so their managers hope) the collab of the century. And they might learn a thing or two along the way. (Listen, I read this on a whim, I wasn't too into Human AUs at the time, I was up for some smut that day, and this fic is a LOT more wholesome than the subject lets on and really gripped me! Lots of very nice details in there! And also, you know.... smut)

by the minute by @issylra (Explicit - 11K - Human AU, Sex Phone Operator Dream) Dream has a bet with Desire : he has to manage a phone sex line for some time. He's not thrilled by it. Callers are... unimaginative and unoriginal, to say the least. Except one. He has a very nice voice. He's funny. And he sounds just about as lost as he is, in life. (The tags make it sound super raunchy but it's more about developping attraction through someone's voice and getting to know someone through the phone and falling in love and.... it's just lovely, it's very sweet, it's like a little blanket with a warm cup of tea, really)

Now I KNOW this is not what you EXPLICITELY asked for but.... dare I suggest..... something with an OC thrown in the mix? Cause that's just adding a fun player to the game, with added stakes, really!

as heart for heart, for loving me by @kittttycakes (hello darling) (Explicit - WIP but soon to be finished - 151k so far - Canon compliant - OT3 if there ever was one - How to polyamory, a guide for Dream of the Endless, a primordial being who needs to use his goddamn words) When Dream finds Hob at the New Inn, he's ready to open up a little. Be a friend. Be a little more than that, though he can't quite articulate it. The only issue with that is that Hob has a girlfriend. A live-in girlfriend. A very much serious girlfriend. Dream tries his darnest to hate her, and finds he can't quite bring himself to. (It's soft, it's lovely, it has angst, it has smut, it has fluff for days, it has developping relationships GALORE (plural) and it's just a nice read to switch up your rotation, cause the potential for situations is tripled now!)

people are so unwilling to ascribe even a hint of artistic meaning to gore and sex even when they enjoyed the media it was in it is so wild, literally even reviews that are positive to books with those themes heavily present they'll still say shit like 'lazy gore shock fest' as if the shock of how we respond to gore in itself is somehow devoid of all meaning or value to explore

desperately shaking media reviewers by the shoulders begging them to do the self-same critical thinking they keep saying you 'have to use' when engaging with this kind of media rather than only relying on their gut instinct of disgust to immediately dismiss any artistic value in the work they are 'analysing' please for the love of god i didn't come to your book review wanting to be reminded how nothing that i create will ever 'be of value' just because it involves topics most people can't stomach

Finally got to watch Mutant Mayhem Tmnt and it's definitely one of my top favorite animated movies.

It took me a lot longer to finish it cause I was looking at all the details and laughing at a lot of the jokes.

Final Thoughts: Baby Donnie is my one Braincell, I related to Mikey way too much, Leo is still a dork. And finally. RAPH.

That kid was whole fucking menace I stg. Response to any fight is go down guns blazing.

Which is why he's my favorite.

Just saw TMNT Mutant Mayhem…

ANY other year Spiderverse comes out it’s a lock for best animated.

But gang I just got back from Mutant Mayhem and it KICKS ASS ACROSS EVERY CATEGORY.

The animation and art style is so unique and funky and expressive and beautiful. The writing and dialogue is funny as fuck. It’s the best and only the best of Boys Will Be Boys. Little boys. Middle schooler little boys that will ruin your life with killer world economy and then trip on their own shoelaces. Fuckin dorks. All four brothers shine. The choreography, camera work, pacing, all incredible to watch. Cant wait to see it again to catch all the little details in the backgrounds. The voice acting is INCREDIBLE, I feel these four are brothers in my heart and soul. There isn’t not a single weak performance in the movie. Soundtrack and score are KILLER! I need it injected in my VEINS.

And they are the TEENAGE mutant ninja turtles. The director made a comment in an ad I saw about how there are many iterations of the turtles, we know them well, but no one ever focuses on the Teenage in TMNT. So they did. And it’s so good. It’s classic turtles origin storytelling and they have SO much fun with it.

Maybe im just still on the rush after just leaving the theater, but if you have to see ONE movie this year, that includes Oppenheimer, Barbie, Spiderverse, I’d recommend seeing Mutant Mayhem.

Whether you are a die hard for rottmnt, 2012, or have never watched tmnt in any iteration, this movie is gonna be a great watch for you. (Ik prev generation fans were skeptical when it was announced, I was too)

God it’s so good. I’m literally gonna go see it again in 2 days. I’m buying tickets now. It’s so good christ alive. Tentatively my favorite movie of 2023, rapidly climbing the ranks of favorite movie in general.

Fuck that’s a good movie.

     Without a voice to really anchor them to, Link sees the signs in his head repeated like some seared-in afterimage, hears the sentiment echoed in his thoughts as if it's one of his own. Put like that, the idea feels— especially pointless. Almost traitorous. Yet it loops again, the same gentle sound 'cause it's not his own thought, and it's the kind of effect only someone like Shion can have on someone like Link.

     In this, too, does he realise something.

     This old idea, brazen now in its plainness, is the culmination of his companion's care — and there's a part of him that abruptly regrets denial being the first thing he reaches for.

     It's the part he feels buried somewhere in the cracked earth of his heart, a sprout rooted, and watered, and sunlit by everything that Shion and Grasshopper have come to be. Heroes, yes; connected, yes; but further than that: whatever they are that allows Link to place a small, trembling hand over Shion's knuckles; whatever they are that has him scooting closer to that warmth his fears trust not to burn him; whatever they are that makes him reconsider this presented kindness in all its futility, some level of believing if only so— if only so—

     "Ssor-ry," he says, a croak pushed past the lump of emotion sitting on the base of his tongue, "mea—...I mean-t." His voice stalls there, which isn't anything strange, but the words he needs his companion to hear are important enough that it turns him frantic. Link hurriedly lifts his other hand, all fingers besides his first and last curled in, to slide it back and forth between them with his pinky pointed at Shion. "You too!"

     ( ...And keeps sliding it back and forth between them. ) "You too, you too, you too!"
