As usual, my thoughts regarding this week’s prompts and random thoughts on chapters 22-24 are below the cut (sprinkled in some psychology thoughts again).

Honestly, I think the people in Panem would perceive the whole everlark storyline the same way we perceive and react to our ships on tv (desperately wanting to reach through the screen, shoving the characters forcefully together, screaming “And now, kiss!”); especially the Capitolites who barely recognize the tributes (or people in the districts, in general) as people. The people in the districts would definitely view the whole thing more under a “reality tv” kind of lens, questioning how much of the relationship is real or not (we know that Finnick certainly thought that the entire thing was just a spiel, until Peeta hit that forcefield). The time spent in the cave must have been pretty convincing, though.

I think that Katniss is still torn here - On the one hand, she kind of wants to believe that Peeta is actually into her (remember the happiness she felt when Peeta told her how his crush on her began, and it all added up and seemed so real), but on the other hand she’s terrified of that possibility because A) lingering trauma from her mom’s depression in response the Mr. Everdeen’s death, B) Katniss never even considered falling in love, so that’s a sudden unexpected thing to deal with, and C) maybe it’s just for the sake of the Games; and wouldn’t that hurt, getting your hopes up only to learn it was only for show? (How about we ask Peeta about that?)

Yeah, that quote about Peeta only eating stale bread also struck me as quite sad. It just further adds to his understanding how there should be more to life than just survival, though. (One day, I’ll make that post about Peeta, Katniss, and Maslow’s pyramid of needs, I swear! I’ve already gathered some research material)

Chapter 22

My mother’s hand strokes my cheek and I don’t push it away as I would in wakefulness, never wanting her to know how much I crave that gentle touch. How much I miss her even though I still don’t trust her. - Ugh, I can’t... Katniss misses her mom, misses being cared for😢 I’m so glad we’re going to see her patch up her relationship with her mom in CF... On a different note, Katniss craving that gentle touch just perfectly illustrates why she’s so drawn to Peeta, who is generally such a gentle soul (I mean, he’s literally the person stroking her cheek here 😊)

He [Peeta] doesn’t seem angry about my tricking him, drugging him, and running off to the feast. Maybe I’m just too beat-up and I’ll hear about it later when I’m stronger. But for the moment, he’s all gentleness. - As I was saying... 😉

“I’ll go hunting soon,” I say. “Not too soon, all right?” he says. “You just let me take care of you for a while.” - I love them so much😊🥰 And then Peeta makes sure she’s well-fed and hydrated, he rubs her cold feet and tucks her into the sleeping back... and she let’s him! 💗

“He [Thresh] let you go because he didn’t want to owe you anything?” asks Peeta in disbelief. “Yes. I don’t expect you to understand it. You’ve always had enough. But if you’d lived in the Seam, I wouldn’t have to explain,” I say. “And don’t try. Obviously I’m too dim to get it,” he says. - Oof. This exchange here is interesting in many ways: 1) it highlights their different experiences, tied to their different socioeconomic backgrounds, basically, and 2) that Katniss is very much aware of this difference, but we also see hints of her own ignorance here - because Peeta didn’t have to starve in his childhood, she thinks that he can’t possibly understand this level of hardship; but there are other ways in which one can suffer/lack fundamental needs, which brings us to 3) Peeta’s response about being “obviously too dim to get it”; I think this is a clue to his mom being also verbally abusive towards him: she called him “stupid creature” when he burnt those loaves of bread for Katniss and when he’s losing it in the attic of the Justice Building in D11 in CF he is mad that Katniss and Haymitch keep things from him “like [he’s] too inconsequential or stupid or weak to handle them”, which - to me - sounds like he’s tired of being treated that way (i.e. the way his mother treats him)

“I want to go home, Peeta,” I say plaintively, like a a small child. - God, this is a teenager in a murder-arena who feels like wanting to go home is a childish notion instead of a totally legitimate wish for anyone in that situation, regardless of age 😢

It’s not that Peeta’s soft exactly, and he’s proved he’s not a coward. But there are things you don’t question too much, I guess, when your home always smells like baking bread, whereas Gale questions everything. What would Peeta think of the irreverent banter that passes between us as we break the law each day? Would it shock him? The things we say about Panem? Gale’s tirades against the Capitol? - Geez, Katniss, give Peeta some credit here! A) It’s not like Peeta can walk around District 12 talking publicly about the injustices happening there - she and Peeta hadn’t even talked with each other before the reaping, whereas Gale is her best friend who rants to her while they are outside the confines of D12 and B) Peeta is literally the one who introduced the whole “not a piece in their Games”-idea to her; why would he be clutching his pearls over Katniss and Gale’s irreverent banter?! Just because Peeta didn’t live on the brink of starvation (she again brings up how his house smells like bread and - at this point - still thinks that the family running the bakery actually gets to eat what they produce just like that), doesn’t mean he doesn’t see how shitty life in D12 is - he can still want better conditions for those who are worse off than him!

“I did do the right thing,” I say. “No! Just don’t, Katniss!” His grip tightens, hurting my hand, and there’s real anger in his voice. “Don’t die for me. You won’t be doing me any favors. All right?” - Well, we’ll see this song and dance again in CF...

And while I was talking, the idea of actually losing Peeta hit me again and I realized how much I don’t want him to die. [...] And it’s not about what will happen back home. And it’s not just that I don’t want to be alone. It’s him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread.” - I wish CF Katniss would remember this moment when she is questioning her motives about saving Peeta’s life in the arena - You. Care. For. This. Boy! You. Value. Him. For. Who. He. Is!!!

This is the first kiss that we’re both fully aware of. [...] This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious. This is the first kiss that makes me want another. - Whoo! Is it hot in here or is it just me? 😉

I’m struck by his immediacy now. As we settle in, he pulls my head down to use his arm as a pillow; the other rests protectively over me even when he goes to sleep. No one has held me like this in such a long time. Since my father died and I stopped trusting my mother, no one else’s arms have made me feel this safe. - He makes her feel safe in a murder-arena!!! 😭 This is the kind of stuff that makes everlark just a top tier romance, tbh

Peeta telling Katniss about his crush starting on their first day of school 🥰😭 - and her reaction to it... For a moment, I’m almost foolishly happy - yes, because you have a crush on him, too! - and then confusion sweeps over me. Because we’re supposed to be making up this stuff [...] So, if those details are true... could it all be true? - YESSSSSSSS!!!

“You have a... remarkable memory, “ I say haltingly. - as a severely socially awkward person... I felt that lame response in my bones 😅

“You don’t have much competition anywhere.” And this time, it’s me who leans in. - God, this would be such an amazing moment if it didn’t get tainted by that immediate sponsor gift, which just serves to muddle Katniss’s feelings with her sense of survival, further complicating her relationship with Peeta... *sigh*

Chapter 23

“What was that you were saying just before the food arrived? Something about me... no competition... best thing that ever happened to you...” “I don’t remember that last part,” I say, hoping it’s too dim in here for the cameras to pick up my blush. “Oh, that’s right. That’s what I was thinking,” he says. - Peeta is the master of being a cheeky little shit and adorable flirt at the same time

“So, since we were five, you never even noticed any other girls?” I ask him. “No, I noticed just about every girl, but none of them made a lasting impression but you,” he says. - I appreciate that while Peeta has had a crush on Katniss forever, he clearly didn’t spend the entire time pining after her, oblivious to the rest of the world - he has a life outside of Katniss Everdeen, but ultimately, it all lead back to her

A disturbing thought hits me. “But then, our only neighbor will be Haymitch!” “Ah, that’ll be nice,” says Peeta, tightening his arms around me. “You and me and Haymitch. Very cozy. Picnics, birthdays, long winter nights around the fire retelling old Hunger Games tales.” “I told you, he hates me!” I say, but I can’t help laughing at the image of Haymitch becoming my new pal. - Laugh all you want, this is going to end up being your future anyway 😄

He [Haymitch]’s at something of a disadvantage because most mentors have a partner, another victor to help them whereas Haymitch has to bready to go into action at any moment. Kind of like me when I was alone in the arena. I wonder how he’s holding up, with the drinking, the attention, and the stress of tring to keep us alive. - Katniss is already worrying about her “new pal”, I see ;)

Maybe he [Haymitch] wasn’t always a drunk. Maybe, in the beginning, he tried to help the tributes. But then it got unbearable. It must be hell to mentor two kids and then watch them die. - Honestly, that sounds absolutely awful...

Poor, Katniss, when she learns of Thresh’s death :( - But no one will understand my sorrow at Thresh’s murder. - It’s horrible how compassion and basic human decency gets construed as ‘weakness’ in the world of Hunger Games (esp. the Capitol)

Then I escape into sleep, comforted by a full belly and the steady warmth of Peeta beside me. - Honestly, I think a word analysis of THG-series could be interesting; how often does Katniss mention “warmth”, “steady/steadiness” “safe/safety/security” in connection with “Peeta”?

“We make a goat cheese and apple tart at the bakery,” he says. “Bet that’s expensive,” I say. “Too expensive for my family to eat. Unless it’s gone very stale. Of course, practically everything we eat is stale,” says Peeta [...] Huh. I always assumed the shopkeepers live a soft life. And it’s true, Peeta has always had enough to eat. But there’s something kind of depressing about living your life on stale bread - Katniss is starting to realize that the lives of the merchants isn’t a cushy as she thought; also, in a way, we see a “prettier” version of how Panem treats the districts overall -> feeding the districts just enough that they can do their work (plus/minus a couple of people who’ll die of starvation, but at a small, for Capitolites insignificant margin), but not so much that they are in good shape to rebel; here, the merchants of D12 have just enough that they can live a “decent” life (they know it could be worse -> the Seam), but they don’t have enough to live a free, comfortable, self-determined life either. This also just further drives a wedge between the inhabitants of D12 (the merchants won’t want to rebel because they don’t want to get ‘demoted’ in their lifestyle, starving like the people from the Seam, and the Seam folk feel resentful towards the merchant people, while also not having the resources to rebel, due to their awful socioeconomic conditions)

What would be my life like on a daily basis? Most of it has been consumed with the acquisition of food. Take that away and I’m not really sure who I am, what my identity is. - It’s so sad who Katniss has been so consumed with ensuring that her most base needs are fulfilled that she barely has had the time to really figure out who she is and what she wants from life (If we’re talking Maslow’s pyramid of needs, Katniss would primarily be stuck on the lowest tier 😢)

At least, we’ll be friends, I think. Nothing will change the fact that we’ve saved each other’s lives in here. And beyond that, he will always be the boy with the bread. Good friends. - Honestly, Katniss counting on being good friends with Peeta after the Games is the highest honor she can bestow on him at that moment (she’s so into him, lol); of course, knowing that their relationship is going to be a bit rocky once they’ve come back makes this thought a little sad... but we also know they’ll make up (and out ;) in the future

I cover his mouth with my hand, but I’m laughing. “Stop! Cato could be right outside our cave.” He grabs my hand away. “What do I care? I’ve got you to protect me now,” says Peeta, pulling me to him. - This moment would be so cute (also, Peeta’s so confident in Katniss’s skills to protect him, which is adorable - toxic masculinity who?) but... Ugh, he’s just so giddy here, it kind of breaks my heart for when he learns later that (at least some) of Katniss’s reactions were just for show

“If we want food, we better head back up to my old hunting grounds,” I say. “Your call, Just tell me what you need me to do,” Peeta says. - Love how Peeta’s always ready to follow Katniss’s lead :)

Ideally, I’d dump Peeta now with some simple root-gathering chore and go hunt [...] “Katniss,” he says. “We need to split up. I know I’m chasing away the game.” [...] “Show me some plants to gather and that way we’ll both be useful.” - Teamwork! If it weren’t for Katniss worrying for Peeta’s safety, they’d be on the same page here

“What if you climbed up in a tree and acted as a lookout while I haunted?” I say, trying to make it sound like very important work. “What if you show me what’s edible around here and go get us some meat?” he says, mimicking my tone. - I really like how Peeta’s challenges Katniss here; he doesn’t just go along with everything she says, while still being quite reasonable

I feel like I’m eleven, again, tethered not to the safety of the fence but to Peeta, allowing myself twenty, maybe thirty yards of hunting space. [...] I allow myself to drift farther away, and soon have two rabbits and a fat squirrel to show for it. - I don’t know, but Katniss feeling tethered to Peeta makes me think of Mary Ainsworth’s attachment theory, according to which children with a secure attachment to their primary caregiver use their “attachment figure as a safe base to explore the environment”... Of course, Ainsworth’s Strange Situation was conducted with young children, but attachment styles are supposed to influence the relationships we form with people in our later lives as well (including romantic relationships)... I dunno, just a random association that popped into my brain 😅

Chapter 24

Peeta’s a whiz with fires, coaxing a blaze out of the damp wood. - Heh, Peeta sure knows how to handle fire, huh, Katniss (or should I say: Girl on Fire?) 😏

I order him into the sleeping bag and set aside the rest of his food for him when he wakes. He drops off immediately. I pull the sleeping bag up to his chin and kiss his forehead, not for the audience, but for me. Because I’m so greateful that he’s still here, not dead by the stream as I’d thought. - Aww, this is so sweet (and domestic)!

It’s funny. I feel almost as if it’s the first day of the Games again. That I’m in the same position. [...] But no, there’s the boy waiting beside me. I feel his arms wrap around me. - They are a team! Katniss doesn’t have to face the horrors of the Games alone anymore! It keeps boiling down to this.

All this wedding talk is making me upset and I just sense that Michael isn't completely happy but I hope whatever he is doing, he'll find true happiness through it all

Ah yes, the time has finally come to rant about my favorite couple on this planet!!

Mystal has to be the shadiest couple I have had the pleasure of witnessing. There is so many things wrong with this couple (including the ridiculous age difference that would’ve caused a massive outrage if it were the other way around) but let’s start with the one and only, Crystal Leigh. Crystal is a b-i-t-c-h and when I say bitch, I mean bitch, This grown ass woman (what is she now, 35? 36?) has the audacity to fight with young fans (myself included) just because they called her out for her horrible past. Now, we all have made mistakes before when we were teenagers and have grown since then, but this woman has made all these mistakes in her late twenties and refuses to take responsibility for any of them. Fat shaming, using several slurs, and making fun of mental disorders is not something a grown woman should do and I would advise that she take notes from Michael who actually took responsibility for one sexist joke he made when he was fifteen! Another thing to add is that Crystal is a PR manager and has managed several celebrities (no A or B list celebs though) so she has her way around things and is no rookie here.

Now that we discussed that Crystal was no angel before meeting Michael, let’s bring up the numerous holes they have in their relationship timeline. In Michael’s engagement post on Instagram, he claims that it “all started for them” in Bali 3 years ago, where at the time, Crystal was still with Spencer (his posts at the time can confirm that) and some have already speculated that she was having an affair with Michael at the time because he kept posting about her and you can actually see them getting cozy in the background of some videos posted by friends. After the first Bali trip, Crystal was STILL with Spencer but yet, she had a picture of her and Michael kissing in Bali as his iMessage contact picture on her Macbook screen. As much as I hoped that Michael wasn’t the “homewrecker” type, he clearly knew she was in a relationship no matter what his intentions first were (rather it is PR or not). The Bali trip took place right after the band finished a big headlining tour, where the original plan was according to the boys, move to LA (where Calum and Ashton share a place & Michael and Luke share a place) but that did not happen. From what we eventually figured out, Luke had moved in with Arz, Cashton moving in together, and then Michael mysteriously living somewhere else. There was a picture Michael posted in January of 2016 of a coffee mug and along with some of his stories, you can see that he was staying at a familiar apartment which ended up being Crystal’s place. So now that we can indicate that this relationship was a mess from the start, let’s continue to their current situation.

Michael is somebody who we used to mock at for always sitting his ass at home playing video games instead of clubbing with his bandmates because he hated that lifestyle but hey! throw Crystal in the picture and *poof*,just like magic, Michael is DJing at multiple clubs with “friends” and “friends of friends”. Michael has mentioned before that he gets social anxiety and sometimes prefers being alone rather than being somewhere crowded but yet, Crystal is dragging him along like one of her dogs to a ridiculous party with her plastic LA friends and people he hardly knows. I really do hope Michael is genuinely happy with this brand new lifestyle and isn’t just doing this for the sake of Ms.Sponsorship. Anybody with eyes can see that since the start of the relationship, e v e r y t h i n g posted by Crystal has to be either promo or a sponsorship. While this probably won’t be a surprise coming from Crystal (since my sis wants to secure her bag) but it’s a shock coming from Michael who’s doing it too now and if you look back at his old posts before Crystal, he has never tagged or mentioned a sponsor in his life. It’s one thing to tag a brand or location, but to tag every single detail on posts and stories is insane. All I’m saying is that nothing in this so called relationship adds up and it honestly looks like one big marketing scheme since literally everything they do is just looks like business (why is every single picture they take together staged and looks so awkward and unnatural? Imagine having a photographer following you around just to “capture the love” its fucking ridiculous LMAO)

One last thing I would like to discuss is the engagement and so-called wedding that everyone keeps bringing up to me. If one of my closest friends that i’d consider a brother gets engaged, I would be over the moon with excitement but yet, not a single one of his bandmates has peeped a word or even congratulated either one of them. The proposal itself is so funny because it took place in Bali, where their supposed affair began, and it was not even paid for by Michael, but by fucking GUESS, the clothing company that only invited Crystal and her friends for a photoshoot LMAOO. Let’s not forget how the Daily Mail somehow got access to every detail about this engagement (from their first song to ring size) and “professional photos” before he even brought it up to the public himself. Now, I don’t know about you guys, but wouldn’t it be nice to actually have the most important people in your life (maybe um like your bandmates or parents?) to be there and witness when you propose to the love of your life and not just some nameless models you met a week ago? The band clearly doesn’t give a shit about Crystal but obviously try to be supportive for the sake of Michael even though they have not once shown an ounce of support in the past 3 or so years they’ve been together. The fact that Michael getting engaged at 23 is just sad and crazy. Don’t get me wrong, it is perfectly fine for anyone to get married anytime after 18 but it’s the matter of should you set yourself up to be tied down at such an early age? Michael has spent every year since the start of his career on his feet and working, not being able to discover himself or live on his own for once. I feel like an older woman who clearly lived our her years as a teen and her entire twenties is capable of settling down but not a 23 year old man who hasn’t truly found himself yet and I feel like he’s trying to convince himself that he is happy even though his face says otherwise. At the end of the day, if Ms. Promotion wasn’t a piece of shit and Michael at least looked like he had an ounce of happiness in him, I would support the shit out of this couple and maybe even throw rice myself at their wedding (that might not even happen since Michael never brings it up and doesn’t even fucking know the year he wants to tie the knot LMAOO)

Anyways, long read I know but this can probably answer all the asks I have about my opinion on Mystal and the non-existant wedding that will take place in the year 20whofuckingknows

it’s almost the end of october, which means one of the greatest, most terrifying exploits known to writers is upon us: NaNoWriMo.

there are plenty of super good survival posts out there, but as this’ll be my seventh time participating (six wins, hoping for a seventh), i thought i’d drop my own set of tips into the mix. i’m going to focus mostly on the practical details of how to write; if you want tips on the writing itself either search the writing/reference tags or pester me to do another one later :P with that said, ~on with the post~

Step One: Figure Out Your Goal

i know, i know, obviously it’s to write 50k, but what does that mean to you? are you expecting

polished prose, ready to send off to a publisher?

being able to write every day?

just throwing up a bunch of ideas?

a mix of everything?

all of these are valid, but they’re going to require different approaches. if you want jaw-dropping writing, you’re going to need in the ballpark of five or more hours each day, if not more. if you want consistency, you’ll want to look at your normal schedule and set up a couple times you know you can write at. if just you want words, pretty much all you need to make sure is that you squeeze writing time in whenever.

your goal will probably change as the month progresses, and that’s totally fine. just check in every so often to remember a)what you’re working for and b)if it’s actually plausible. speaking of...

Step Two: Realize Your Limitations

1. Typing.

imma get super practical here: your typing speed dictates how fast you can get done. if you write 40wpm (the average), you cannot write the full 1667 in a half hour any more than you can run a mile in under three minutes. it’s honestly not a bad idea to check out your own speed, if only to help you understand yourself better. in my experience, actual writing then works like this (using my max speed, 89, as an example):

Absolute Max: 89 wpm (baseline)

Warring: 70 (75% of baseline)

In the zone: 45 (50% of baseline)

Taking my time, concentrated: 22 (25% of baseline)

anything lower than your max/4 probably means you’re spending a lot of time either researching or staring at the page, so just be aware of that.

2. Time & Focus

this kinda goes without saying, but best case scenario this is at least 1-2 hours of your life a day, or dedicating full Saturday/Sundays if you’re a weekend warrior kind of person. it’s so, so worth it if you can make time for it, but also don’t feel bad if you can’t! doing a half nano (25k) or whatever you want is also a fully acceptable plan.

that said, if you do have time, figure out your focus too. if you’ve never been the kind of person that can type for six hours straight, you will probably not magically become this person when it hits Nov. 1 (though with practice, you might be by Nov. 30). i like trying to write at least 300 before work and another 300 during lunch. that way there’s only 1k left for the evening, and having words on the page just makes me feel better. experiment with different ways of blocking out your time in the first few days and see what works best for you.

3. Don’t Forget You Live in a Body

writing is hard work, you will need to eat brain food! hunching over wrecks your back, stand up and stretch every so often! you will hate existing if you forgo sleep for days! and for the love of charles dickens, patron saint of getting paid by the word, take care of your mother-effing wrists!!

seriously on that last one. i’ve ignored it in the past and thoroughly screwed up my wrists one year; don’t be me. keep in them in a neutral position, do regular stretches, and if you need to, get wrist wraps (i recommend these).

Step Three: Actually Doing the Thing

the previous steps have had pretty broad advice, but now it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty. these are mostly things i know work for me, and therefore may not for you—adjust to your own needs!

1. Write for 15 Minutes Every Day, Non-Negotiable.

i don’t even mean this is a “write 15 min and then your brain will be tricked into writing more” kinda way, but like, literally. you’re probably not going to be able to do 1667 every day—sometimes you’ll be tired and just won’t have the time. you’re very likely, however, to have 15 minutes, and you’ll want to use them. Doesn’t matter if you write 50 words or 500 in that time, at least you’ll have done something, and that’s usually enough to keep you from feeling like just giving up the next day.

2. You Might Need Physical Spaces

i’m a pretty sensory person when it comes to writing, and having a dedicated writing space is so helpful for me. going back to the idea of being an embodied person, it’s a lot easier to get your brain into a writing mode if your body’s already there. some good options include:

coffee shops (cozy! food!)

a specific room in your home (easily accessed! do what you want!)

libraries (free! quiet!)

a friend’s house (writing buddy! easy access to sounding board!)

all of these places usually have access to wifi, which is a positive.

3. You Definitely Need Digital Spaces

i pretty much always write in the same processor, once again because it helps set the mood. the main options include:

google drive (solid choice, cloud backup, mobile accessible)

dabble writer (cloud backup, links to nano, dark mode, chapter options)

write or die (only for actual writing—a scary but effective motivator; save elsewhere)

word/pages/etc. (ready to go on your computer, formatting options)

scrivener (great plotting tools, detailed interface)

i use dabble writer myself (they’re a nano sponsor, so you can get it free for this month, and as a double bonus you get it half off for the rest of the year if you win). and no, i’m not getting paid to wax poetic about them, but honestly i’ve used it to win the past two years and i adore it.

anyway my biggest tip here is that i SUPER SUPER DON’T RECOMMEND NON-CLOUD OPTIONS. it’s very risky, but if you must, do a proper back up at least once a week. that shiz is not worth it.

4. The Timer is Your New Best Friend

because i’ve heard this argument before: no, it’s not a crutch, and no, it’s not cheating. it’s literally best practices. i’m personally a big fan of this online timer, and i let it run for 15 min every time i write. after each session i check how many words i wrote, then after maybe a quick 1-2 min break, start over.

you can totally set the timer for longer or shorter periods, depending on what works for you. i’m a fan of the 15 min sessions bc it’s just long enough to get a bit of flow going, and just short enough that i can convince my spacy brain that we can get through it without wandering. it’s also a fantastic length for warring, if you’re down for that.

5. Write That Idea Down for Lewis’s Sake

the original idea for the chronicles of narnia came to c.s. lewis when he was at a restaurant, and thank the lord, he wrote it down on a napkin. he wouldn’t write it until some time later, but if he hadn’t written it down, he might’ve forgotten it. why is this important, you ask?

BC YOU WILL FORGET THINGS.

if you have an idea, write it down in your phone or your notebook or the waterproof paper in your shower, because i don’t care how sure you are that you’ll remember it, you super won’t. i’ve forgotten many solutions to plot holes in my time and i still hold vigils over their graves. don’t be me. write it down.

Step Four: Managing that Inner Critic of Yours

all right, pay attention. i’m not going to tell you not to edit, because i would be a massive hypocrite if i did. i totally edit during nano. the important part is letting your editor help you win, not hurt you. and that means gaming your critic’s system.

1. Have a Dedicated Deletion Section

many people hear “don’t delete anything” and baulk, because for some of us it’s distracting and we want to rewrite that section until it matches our vision. so, i’m here to tell you: delete it!! rewrite entire chapters!! just save the original content as part of your word count. this is another reason i love dabble, bc at the start of nano i just make a separate part of the book, label it “delete”, and any time i’m writing and dislike a sentence/paragraph i just dump it into that folder and move on. this way you still get to keep the numbers (and why shouldn’t you? you wrote them!) while also writing words you actually like. plus, sometimes that line you deleted in ch. 1 winds up being supremely pertinent in ch.15, and now you can just copy/paste it instead of having to try to remember what exactly you’d said.

2. Acknowledge Ranting as a Time Honoured Tradition

think there’s no precedent for that 2K diatribe you wrote on the london underground? well fear not, because you can’t possibly do worse than hugo’s entire chapters worth of content on the french sewer system! or melville’s frankly terrifying obsession with the finer features of whale biology!

like, yeah, maybe you’ll decide later you don’t need it, but for now, embrace that soap box. dead white guys have been doing it for centuries and still get places in college syllabi. the least you can do is give it a place in your word count.

Step Five: Have Fun!

i know, i know, it’s cliche, but seriously. if this isn’t fun, or at least rewarding, why are you doing it anyway? so enjoy it! send passages you’re proud of to your friends! daydream about it in the car on the way to work/school! cry over a notebook about the twist you just came up with! nano’s a time of fun and exploration, and you shouldn’t miss out on it because you’re thinking too much.

also, this might be counter productive to put at the end of an essay on nano, but don’t obsess over reading essays on nano :P there comes a time when one must simply do, and nano is pretty much the definition of that.

Shades Alvarez (Luke Cage) One-Shot from prompt list

A/N: I received a request from @dysfunction-ality from the List B: Angst/fluff Prompt List , 70 - “After everything we’ve been through, you still don’t think that I love you?” and 99 - “I fell in love with you, not them.” This ended up being a bit longer as the reader insert is backed into a corner and needs to confront Hernan about his “help” with the financial sponsor she lined up for one of the charities she works with.

I used the same reader insert as “He’s Dead” (like this is definitely a follow up story to that one), “No Tip Required” and “Damn Him”. Although really, all my Shades stories could easily be the same reader-insert :)

Warning: F-bomb! Also Season 2 spoilers with my own ideas of what happened beyond S2. So, not a spoiler but spring-boarding off one haha

Standing next to the rail on the second floor of Harlem's Paradise, the woman stared up at Shades as she ran her hand down his tie, lightly tugging it between her fingers. His smile was wide as he turned his head but kept his eyes on her. Leaning up, she whispered in his ear and he moved back slightly but he continued to smile. Her hand was still on his tie.

A man came out of the doorway, catching their attention. Both of them nodded. Shades took the woman's hand and bowed his head down almost low enough to kiss it. She pursed her lips together but it didn't stop the slow smile that took over. Nodding again, she left with the man in the doorway, while others came up to flank her.

You were fuming, but you weren't sure if you wanted to scream or throw up.

After they were gone, he turned to look over the dance floor. In a sea of people, he still zeroed in on you. Taking off his shades, he looked again and all humour dropped from his face. In quick, angry gestures, he pointed your way before he disappeared from view.

Within seconds, someone grabbed your elbow. It was one of the bouncers. “You need to come with me.”

He didn't give you a chance to argue – not that you would have. You had seen enough.

Depositing you in a room off to the side, he left without speaking again, closing the door on his way out.

“Y/n. What the hell are you doing here?” Hernan was already talking as he came into the room from the other side. Firmly closing the door behind him, he adjusted the cuffs of his suit jacket, fixing what became slightly dishevelled as he rushed down from the balcony.

“Well I wanted to talk to you, but it looks like I interrupted something instead.”

Pulling off his shades, he set them on a small table near the door. “What, that? Look, I don't know what you think you saw but-”

“What I saw was you getting real cozy with some woman up there. Is that what you do at work all night? Is that why you don't ever want me stopping by?”

“Some woman?” Hernan paused, his gaze turned up towards the ceiling. Composing himself, he pressed his fingers against his eyes before he rubbed them down his face.

“You think I'm just goin-”

Snapping his attention back on you, he swiftly crossed the room, bringing his face within inches of yours. His eyes were wide, almost wild. “That wasn't just some woman and yeah, she's definitely a part of why I don't want you stopping by. Because she's a Carbone, Y/n. She's the Carbone.”

That name meant nothing. You had no idea he was referring to one of the most powerful crime families in all of New York. “I don't...what does that mean?”

Sighing through his nose, Hernan blinked and took a step back. “Doesn't matter.”

“So...what? She's a Carbone so that makes it ok to fondle your tie and blatantly eye-fuck you in the middle of the club?”

His eyebrows shot up as he spread his hands apart. “Yeah, it does. That and the fact that we have to keep the peace here, so sometimes you just have to play along.”

“Really? And how often do you just have to play along?”

Letting out a desperate laugh, Hernan brought his hands together in front of his chest as though he were praying to you. “Please, Y/n. People come here and they want to have fun. The easiest way to maintain order is to keep people happy. It doesn't go anywhere, never any further than what you just saw yourself. But we don't make it into a thing – we keep it light, they move on. Peace kept. And then I come home to you.”

“It's not home. It's my place.” He hadn't actually moved in and you blurted that fact, not sure exactly why you needed to rub that in his face.

His jaw tensed and his lips drew together in a tight line. Slowly, his eyebrows furrowed together in a mixture of defeat and frustration. It's not an expression you saw often – he was the man who managed everyone.

“Y/n. There are a lot of moving parts here and I don't just mean club-goers. We've got people, people important to Harlem, that come here because this is neutral ground. My job is to protect Cage and to keep it peaceful and safe. Frankly, if everyone is having a good time and not trying to kill each other, I don't care how many people are being flirty. I fell in love with you, not them.”

Loudly, you snorted. “Love?”

Jerking his head back, you may as well have slapped him. His lips curled as he narrowed his eyes at you. “After everything we’ve been through, you still don’t think that I love you?”

“Is that what you call it?”

His mouth dropped open, but you pushed on. This was why you came after all.

“Is that what you call it when you go after my sponsors?”

“What? What are you talking about?”

You had come to Harlem's Paradise with fire in your gut already. There were so many times with Hernan that you didn't want to know the truth – you'd rather turn a blind eye because everything was going so well, with him, with your job, with all of it. You suspected some things weren't right and it gnawed at you. As long as things kept going your way, you ignored that gnawing feeling but you couldn't anymore.

“Don't try to bullshit me, Hernan. Lockwood, one of the most upstanding sponsors I've dealt with, just contacted me to assure me he can still pay the sponsorship he agreed to."

He stayed quiet, his expression growing stony.

“Turns out he lost a great deal at some poker game or something insane this weekend. He took a true hit, I mean his marriage is on the rocks now and things really seem to be falling apart. And yet he calls me to assure me he can still pay up. Tell me, Hernan, why in the fuck would I even remotely be on his mind at a time like this, huh??”

“How the hell should I know?” There was no passion in his response.

“Lockwood is a good man. And frankly, if he couldn't follow through with his sponsorship commitments, I would understand – so would the charity I've got him lined up with. They weren't expecting any private donations; it was a bonus to begin with."

“Great,” he said, shrugging and averting his gaze.

You were practically vibrating at this act of feigning ignorance.

“So again, I ask, why the fuck was he calling me to explain, hell no beg, beg me to understand?”

“I don't know.”

You snapped. The fire in your gut roared and you felt it in every fibre. “The hell you don't, Hernan!”

The anger flew down your arm, into your fingertips. Grabbing a glass from the shelf behind you, you threw it his direction. Swiftly he dodged it, and it shattered on the table behind him. His nostrils flared, but he didn't retaliate, so you kept yelling.

“Upton, I can understand. He was a sick, dangerous asshole who deserved everything he got, and getting money from him was probably the only good thing that sick fuck ever did in his whole life. But this? Going after Lockwood? What the fuck, Hernan?”

You flung another glass, but this time he caught it and carefully placed it on the table. It lightly crunched the shattered glass

“So what, have I been sending my goons after these people like I'm some sort of mobster??”

Hernan tilted his head at you after looking up from the glass. “Goons? What are you, in the thirties now?”

Was he seriously trying to crack a joke there? There was no hint of a smile on his face, so if he was trying to break the tension...

No. He was trying to distract you. Nice try.

“Hernan. What did you do?” An eerie calm fell over you, bolstered by the knowledge that he just failed to deter you.

For a moment, he kept his gaze to the side. The room grew so quiet that all you could hear was the rushing in your ears – even the sound from the performance on stage was a distant, muffled background noise. It seemed to take effort to look you in the eyes, and his throat worked as he swallowed several times.

“If I say anything about it, you become an accessory.”

Your heart dropped. Your stomach dropped.

Stepping forward, he grabbed your arm, rubbing his thumb along the sleeve of your shirt. “Baby, I'm sorry. Most of the private people you turned to for donations were not good people. They might not be like the Carbones, but...they're the sort of people that make up some of the moving parts here. Sometimes they need convincing to do the right thing and give back to their community.”

If you had anything in your system, you might have actually thrown it up on the spot. His grip became firmer as he was half held you up.

“No one, aside from Upton, has gotten hurt. And Lockwood is completely off the hook – if he decides to continue with the sponsorship, it's from his own conscience.”

Weakly, you pushed his hand away. Everything was spinning, but you didn't want his help.

“Y/n, think of all the good you've done. All of this has gone towards-”

“Stop,” you said, finally.

The muscles along his chin tensed as he clenched his jaw. Staring at you, his dark eyes were full of concern. But for what, exactly, you weren't sure anymore.

“Just stop," you said more firmly. Taking a step back, you held one hand out toward him, gesturing for him to stay away. "I'm done."

“Done? With...”

The fire in your stomach had burnt out. You were burnt out. Exhaustion drained away everything and all you wanted to do curl up and drift away.

“With this. With us...with you.”

Again, Hernan was quiet as he swallowed back whatever he was first trying to spit out. Finally, he wiped a hand across his eyes and shook his head. “No.”

The rushing in your ear had quieted, but you couldn't trust you just heard that. “No?”

Taking in a deep breath of air, he nodded. “That's right, no. We're not done. This is a lot to take in, I get that. So you're going to go home and take some time to digest it. And we're going to talk about this later.”

“The hell we are, Hernan.”

Ignoring you, he knocked sharply on the door you came through. “You're part of this now, Y/n.”

Even through your exhaustion, you felt your heart starting to constrict. Fear? Fear of him or the truth?

Within seconds, the same bouncer from before poked his head in. “Shades?”

“Ms L/n needs to go home now. Make sure she gets there safely.”

Nodding, he grabbed your upper arm and started moving you towards the door. Everything felt like a dream. You wanted to fight from his grip and tell Hernan you were through with him, and you'd go to the police if that's what it took for him to stay away. But instead you just numbly let yourself be led away.

He was right.

She does a lot of sponsored videos and they rarely seem genuine. Even when she's not doing sponsored videos, it feels like Nicol Concilio and how she never gives a bad review. I saw Kelly hanging out with Too Faced a year or two ago and after that I realized her TF reviews are sooooo not genuine and seem sponsored even though her description box says it's not.. That being said, I take good care to keep this apartment clean. If I expect roaches anywhere, it's the kitchen or the bathroom, not IN MY FUCKING BED. Ugh I am so grossed out. 1500/27 a month is 4.5 years. Plus, they offer to upgrade the PC at no cost as new game requirements evolve. If you can get used to the latency (people have tested it, it not great for competitive FPS, but other games would be fine) or already have amazing internet, the price is not bad.

Railtown - Great Beer, Great Food, Great Times

I love beer. I love the smell and taste of it. There's just something really special about enjoying a delicious pint of beer with family and/or good friends. I especially enjoy gathering at some of the micro-brewers around West Michigan, such as Railtown Brewing Company, Founders, White Flame, and many more. Being able to go out and enjoy going around and trying out what each brewery has to offer for beer, food, and atmosphere is always an experience. But I have to say, one of my favorite places to go to and just sit back, relax, and enjoy a good beer is Railtown. Good beer, good food, great times, and great staff. I always have a great time when I go to Railtown Brewing Company. RBC, located in Dutton, MI, has just recently moved into their new building across the driveway from their old location - their old location being in a strip mall with limited space for their equipment and no room for a kitchen. It was still a great place to hang out and enjoy a beer and just talk to the bar tenders. It was also a great place to come out and play some Trivia with Geeks Who Drink. I'd usually walk in with Chick-Fil-A, grab a table, grab a beer, and just kick back and wait for trivia to start. And just sitting around and playing trivia while others played darts or foosball. The atmosphere was cozy. Sure, on Trivia nights it would get a bit loud with the heckling (our team definitely did not help in that department - sorry, not sorry Doug). But the other night's I'd go - it was always relaxing. Having gone there enough, it really in a way started to feel like Cheers where we got to know everyone at the bar and they got to know us. It reminded me a bit of traveling around England and visiting British pubs, where people would gather with family and friends and watch the latest Doctor Who episode. But Railtown was growing, more people were coming in thanks to great staff, great beer, and trivia. What to do? Railtown's owners bought the property, an old carwash, next door. Demolition, cleaning, and the erection of a new building slowly came to life. To help with the costs, RBC launched lifetime mug club memberships for a limited time. If memory serves, it was only for a couple months. While I don't know how big of a financial impact the lifetime mug club memberships had with helping cover the expenses of a new building, it was great to see a lot of the regulars help the cause. And within just about a year, we had the new RBC building, big enough for a large taproom, kitchen, big floor space for trivia, and an outdoor patio for dining and hosting games for events. RBC is heavily involved with their community and always seems to be helping raise money for this or awareness for that. It's a great thing to see in any community. The new building also has an upstairs area when the main floor gets crowded. The upstairs is also used for normal diners who don't wish to play trivia. With a shiny new kitchen, RBC serves up delicious food. Burgers, RBC Chili, some delicious tots, and a lot more, there's something there for anyone. It's far above normal bar food. For example, today was their Citra Warrior event - Warrior Unleashed and they whipped up Fish & Chips with homemade tartar sauce. Delicious! Definitely couldn't go wrong with that. The food items have come a long way in a short time with a bit of a shaky, but delicious, start after they moved into their new building. It was more quiet up there than downstairs which made it easier to talk with the family I was having lunch with. And the staff is always great! My mug barely sat empty. Talk to Alex, one of the bartenders sometime. Great guy and a personal shoutout to him. Very knowledgable and a funny guy. Railtown has come a long way from just starting out in a strip mall with limited seating, no kitchen, and a small taproom to a more spacious taproom, kitchen, and lots of seating. Pink

This is for @mindsebbandflow‘s new giveaway, and let me tell you I wasn’t sure how to express my love for my favorite character. Although by now, I’m very sure that my followers can guess which boueibu character is my favorite.

Ryuu has been my favorite ever since I first watched the show, and even before. He stood out to me in all the promotional material as well. By now it was just his pinkness or.. The adorable factor that caused it, although... What's not to love?

I’ve taken this as an excuse to rant about my favorite character so prepare yourself for a long post dedicated to Ryuu Zaou and my love for him.

Also included: - Headcanons - Speculations - Some pics - AU ideas (sponsored by me and @fillyrika) - LOTS of ranting, I mean it when I say this turned out long.

Ryuu is adorable, there is no denying it.

His Looks His hair is bright and looks so soft, and he's got big, bright, brown eyes that really go well with all that pink. I have a bias for him with his hair down, but he's had his hair plenty of ways which I all enjoyed, look at these!

I'm sure there's probably some I missed. I love those two from the posters too. Look at how bright they are. And Ryuu really knows how to accessorize. I like that he has earrings, and wears headbands, plus the fedora looked really nice on him too.

His outfits from what we seen range from stylish (season 1 ep 7, staff said they picked the outfit from a fashion magazine) to cozy. (season 2 ep 8, sugary ioryuu poster)

I think he looks a lot younger with his hair down, which is probably why he wears it up. Can't be a womanizer if you look like a kid after all.

Personality Enough about his looks now. On to his personality. Ryuu is playful and fun. Reckless, bold, impatient, loud, charismatic, cheery and sweet. He often acts without thinking, and always speaks his mind. Those don't always go well together, and it led to him hurting Yumoto's feelings in season 2. It was never addressed, mainly because Yumoto himself didn't address it.

Still personality but some speculation and headcanons join in now ^^

But there's also some things Ryuu doesn't say. Those things are noticed through his actions. Ryuu has a strong, needy desire to be liked. Not just popular, but liked. It's where his people pleasing tendencies come from. That combined with how he dates around, leads me to think that Ryuu wants to feel wanted.

Did I mention that I LOVE how one of the first thing Io noticed about Ryuu, was that Ryuu is a huge people pleaser and does anything to be liked?! Because my feels!!

And judging by how Ryuu reacted how Io was leaving the defense club in season 1 episode 6, I think kiddo has abandonment issues.

The source of it? Well in novel 1 we find out that Ryuu is raised by his grandma and not his parents. This leads me to believe that

Considering that Ryuu lives with his grandma and not with his parents, I headcanon that his parents left him with her, not when he was a baby, but when he was old enough to understand that his parents left and didn't come back for him. But he wouldn't be old enough to be able to understand that it was his parents' error. He'd think they left because they didn't like him. Because they didn't want him.

So from then on Ryuu started to do everything he could do, to get people to like him. And when he discovered dating.... Well Ryuu is a softy. He likes romance, those trival realistic moments, like sharing coffee with a girl, or when your shoulders brush when the train shakes. Dating lots of girls makes Ryuu feel like he's wanted.

Plus he's a fluffy romance lover!

THEY GROW UP SO FAST!!!

Another thing that's amazing about Ryuu is that deep down he doesn't always feel like he's amazing. That's what we found out in season 2 episode 6.

"I'm an idiot who only thinks of getting with girls." -Ryuu Zaou s2e6

Me and Io shared that appalled tone because D: !! Kiddo no! You're amazing and I love you. And of course I ADORED THE SUBTLE LAYER OF WONDERFUL ANGST!!!

There's more than meets the eye with Ryuu. He's not the smartest and he knows it. But he's a social butterfly and good with reading people. I was honestly surprised by his good analysis on the Beppu twins. So was Io for that matter.

I think that Ryuu is a very good liar/actor, because he knows what people want to hear. We've seen him do it with Wombat in season 1 episode 11, making up the word 'lovetivity' and saying just the right things to get Wombat to agree with him.

Another thing we learn about Ryuu in season 2 is that he can draw. At least chibis XD and in the otome game, when we see Ryuu's room there's this framed picture of a man in fashionable clothes. Now I doubt that Ryuu would frame a magazine clipping. So... What if he designed that himself?

Headcanon: Ryuu goes to study fashion design in Tokyo. Not only that but he ends up going to the same college as Akoya where they end up being roommates.

I can also picture Ryuu becoming a fashion designer when he's older.

I headcanon that Ryuu's grandma owns a bakery, and she helped Ryuu make those chocolates for Io.

Some talk of the side material. Well I love Ryuu in the otome game. It gave us lots of gems like that picture of Ryuu's room. This adorable pj pic

Thanks to @vashtijoy for giving me that keychain I still treasure it! That game also gave us that wonderful ioryuu route. I still love reading @intra-fiducia‘s translations of that game, and the ioryuu friend end. Plus there is that wonderful post about how ioryuu are in the game.

I didn't actively follow the conquest club's manga, but I enjoyed that it showed that Ryuu being good at those machine grabby game things, to win stuffed toys. He must have had lots of practice thanks to winning toys for his dates.

The novels are a treasure, not just for how they portray the characters but also because of the more serious plot. I already talked about the first novel so I won't do it again. The second and third novel aren't translated though, but a bit from one of the first chapters makes me think that Ryuu may be the result of an unplanned teen pregnancy.

Someone told me about how shippy the third novel is, and I can't wait to find out more about that!

There's that comic thing, which I adored, mostly because of my ultimate brotp! Pink Bros! I love the comic in which the pinks work out together, and how Akoya worried about telling Ryuu he was leaving. Those to became close friends and I love it! I love how Akoya grew to care about Ryuu and- Akoya is good at reading people too! I bet he understood that Ryuu has abandonment issues and worried about telling Ryuu that he was leaving.

And their friendship was still in a fragile new place for him too.

Now I LOVE the Boueibu manga, it's still going, but that ioryuu chapter made that thing priceless! How ioryuu have their first real fight in it! Io worrying about Ryuu getting a cold and putting a blanket over him. And that face kiddo makes when Io says "Stay at my side forever!" Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!

It's no secret that I enjoyed the boueibu stage play. Aramaki portrayed Ryuu so well. Captured his fun spirit and his cuteness, and looked great while doing it. Aramaki spoke like Ryuu, walked like Ryuu and sang like Ryuu. It's scary! He even moved like Ryuu! The play is filled with so many wonderful moments as well!

Relationships with others

IORYUU = LIFE

I'm not joking, this ship brings me so much joy. The way they look at each other, how they sound different when talking to each other. How they'd blindly defend the other against their peers. Io's protectiveness is so great! And that they're opposites but admire each other's differences. They're so proud of each other! I'll say it again I love protective Io.

There's so many wonderful ioryuu moments, all of episodes 6, both in season 1 and 2. Those posters, their duets. God I love Sync a Think!

I've made many separate posts about ioryuu so I'll leave it at this for now.

There's akoryuu/pink bros. My ultimate brotp. In my recent fanfic Pink Blood, I made them discover that they're actually related in canon universe. All because Akoya's father had a one night stand with Ryuu's mom. I've loved this BROTP since I started planning my fanfic In the Name of Love, and have been in love with it ever since.

They're also related in several of the AUs I created with @fillyrika. Such as: - Mermaid AU - Fairy AU - Magic School AU - DC Villains AU - CPS AU

And they have a sibling like bond in - Brothel AU - Slave AU - Monster AU

Then there's also Enryuu, season 2 give me a thing that I had kinds hoped for but didn't expect to fall in love with. I kind low-key shipped enryuu before, because the smut would be steamy. (get it Fire + water) But now it's a strong brotp as well. There's several GREAT fanfics for this brotp as well. Like the fic where En stop Ryuu from being bullied, and the one where enryuu wear matching skirts ^^

I have lots of Ryuu merchandise too, I'll share a pic of it later ^^

And I've reached the point were I call Ryuu my son so much, that my mom started calling him her grandson.

Now this post turned out very long, so I wonder if you're still reading this. Sorry about this, I feel like I still have things to say, but I can't think of more right now. At the very least I got the chance to share some of my thoughts on kiddo.

When it comes to family outings, nothing is more traditional and fun than a family trip to the Drive-In, especially to Four Brothers Drive-In Theatre. When my husband and I discovered this secret gem in the Hudson Valley we had just graduated from college and were living with my parents. We quickly fell in love with the feel-good atmosphere full of lively music and good food. Each time we would arrive there would be dozens of families present, ready with blankets, and even frisbees- ready to have a great night with family and friends.

The worst part was when we moved to Pennsylvania and Four Brothers Drive-In was now a two-hour drive from home. The first year we tried a couple of other Drive-Ins that were closer, but they just didn’t make the cut. Four Brothers had car-hop service which meant that we literally could order food to our cars as we watched the movie from their Shake Shack. Their BLTs were top of the line, as well as their burgers, but the real piece de resistance was their wine milkshakes. Now, I know it sounds pretty weird, but for some reason, it works. But, honestly, the best part was just the family-friendly environment that other Drive-Ins couldn’t compare too.

Now, we would have loved to keep making the trip every summer but when you have a baby that hates long car rides, it makes the trip a little tricky. So, when we heard about the Hotel Caravana at Four Brothers Drive-In in Amenia, NY, I was more than a little excited to celebrate Mother’s Day a little early.

I had told my husband that I wanted to get away for Mothers Day, and due to our schedules, anything more than a night or two wouldn’t have worked. It also meant that we needed somewhere that was family friendly… which honestly limited our options of what would actually be a good time. Let’s be honest here, toddlers get restless.

The Hotel Caravana is an airstream, which means it is a trailer that has been revamped into a beautiful 1967-themed hotel. It had all the perks of a fancy hotel but had the ease of being right near the open air. We didn’t have to worry about needing to run down elevators to get the kids outside to burn out their extra energy.

When you first walk in the door to the Hotel Caravana at Four Brothers Drive-In, you will notice two things. One, there seems to be more space than you thought… and two, the decor is gorgeous.

One of the most important rules of the Caravana is that you must take off your shoes before entering. Since the Hotel Caravana is such a cozy place, taking off your shoes helps ensure that the inside stays as clean as possible.

The Caravana at Four Brothers Drive-In can sleep four to six people. We were two adults and two toddlers, but we could have easily fit my parents if they had the night off.

It’s also located in the Hudson Valley, New York, so it is in a convenient location to other attractions. You could take a weekend trip down to Four Brothers and even stop at Splash DownBeach in Fishkill, NY all in one weekend. My parents live in the heart of Hudson Valley, so I know that is in the cards for this summer.

Check-in is at 3 PM and check-out is at 11 AM. We arrived around 5 PM due to the chaos of leaving the house with two toddlers. I do wish we arrived a little earlier so we could have taken a walk in town, but it was a pretty chilly day so it all worked out anyway.

Fun fact, the motto of the Hotel Caravana is “A Boutique concept bringing you freedom, happiness, and the good life- come experience us.”

We definitely felt free as our kids had a dance party eating pizza under the stars while we waited for the movie to start. The deck right outside of the Hotel Caravana was definitely a lovely touch that I didn’t expect to love as much as I did…it made Four Brothers feel like home.

Even though the weather was foggy our two toddlers enjoyed the playground.

This was our first official trip with two toddlers, and it went better than expected.

My husband did try to sneak off with the kids on a quick ride in the car before the movie started to try and get them to sleep- they did not agree with that plan. Because of that I just hopped in the car and my husband and I watched Avengers while our boys watched Baby Shark on youtube until they fell asleep for the night. We had changed them into their PJs so they were all cozy and in new diapers, ready for bed.

We both thoroughly enjoyed the Avengers and Penguins movies despite it being way past our bedtime. The Avengers combined with a warm blanket in our car made us a little too cozy and we forgot to take advantage of the car-hop service! So don’t do what we did and make sure to order before they close. Luckily, we had ordered a large BBQ chicken special pizza and had plenty left over to snack on during the Penguin movie. (Yes, it was delicious cold.)

After the movie, when it was time to move over to the Hotel Caravana for the night I was a little worried about how well my youngest would sleep. K.W. loves his crib and doesn’t do well sleeping in other places. I knew this would be a challenge, however, so I made sure to bring our DockATot to help with the transition. He slept half the night in his cosleeper on top of one of the beds in the Caravana, and just crawled into bed with me when he woke up in the middle of the night.

Other than that small challenge, we all slept perfectly. My three year old even slept until 6:30 AM- which for him is sleeping in! My husband and I were perfectly comfortable in the beds and my only complaint was that I was a tad cold. The Hotel Caravana does have heat and a separate space heater, but I was too paranoid to leave it on while we were sleeping in case the boys snuck out of bed without us realizing.

Overall- I had an amazing time, and saying goodbye to the Four Brothers Drive-In the next morning was actually a little sad. Our kids loved the freedom of being able to run around and we loved the family environment at the Hotel Caravana. It was also refreshing to be able to enjoy a Blockbuster movie with two toddlers without having to get a sitter for the night. The ease and availability of all of our needs of a family definitely made this an early Mother’s Day win in my book and we will be back again.

Notoriety: Is this influencer well liked? Is his/her fame split between admiration and condemnation, or are they a person of mass appeal? (The latter is what you want, so as to not alienate potential customers.)

In other words, celebrity product endorsements are less about engagement and more about attaching a person’s fame and name recognition to a particular brand — regardless of who specifically follows their career. For brands, this type of campaign is much more about grabbing the attention of a wide audience than tapping into a very specific niche.

Old Navy is a veteran of influencer marketing, having partnered with fashion and lifestyle bloggers all over Instagram to promote various lines of Old Navy clothing. For Black Friday, the company doubled down on this strategy by partnering with New York Yankee retiree Alex Rodriguez to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA). Being an alumnus of the BGCA, Rodriguez’s promotion helped Old Navy raise $1 million as part of sales during Black Friday alone.

You know the water brand, Fiji, but you might know its campaign partner better by the Instagram name, weworewhat.

Danielle Bernstein’s fashion blog, We Wore What, recently joined Fiji Water to create Bodyworewhat, an influencer marketing campaign offering eight-minute workout videos with Bernstein and personal trainer Eric Johnson.

This campaign was meant to demonstrate Fiji’s commitment to hydrating those who want to look and feel as fit as Bernstein, while helping her fans get there with all the right motivators.

4. Kaikatsu Club: NETCafe VR

Influencer: Enakorin

Not all influencers are based in sports, fashion, or entertainment — not in Asia, anyway. The cafe chain, Kaikatsu Club, recently launched a virtual reality feature across its Japan locations, where customers can play various VR video games while enjoying a drink or a meal. And who better to help spread the word than Japan’s popular TV personality and cosplayer, Enakorin.

Enakorin is well known by fans of anime, a Japanese artform responsible for many comics and TV shows across the country. Enakorin is also known for her love of video games, making her a perfect choice to represent Kaikatsu’s new VR entertainment platform. Both of them teamed up with TimeLine Japan on YouTube to talk about it.

5. H&M: Fall Studio Collection

Influencers: Julie Sariñana, Ela Velden

H&M has one of the largest Instagram followings of any fashion brand on social media today, due in large part to its influencer campaign with women who reflect H&M’s style all by themselves.

Toward the end of 2016, the boat shoe brand, Sperry, began working with more than 100 micro-influencers on Instagram to create engaging content for its followers. 7. Samsung: Note 7 Launch

Influencer: CyreneQ

New smartphones are unveiled everyday. So, when Samsung released its Note 7 in 2016, it set out to make sure people knew about it. The company partnered with CyreneQ, a professional Snapchat artist and designer with a huge subscriber base, to broadcast its launch to a mobile audience that it wanted buying its new product.

Cyrene used her Snapchat account to document her journey to the event and ultimately give her audience a sneak peak of the new device. 8. Diageo: My Tales of Whisky

Diageo, the parent company of Scottish whiskey brands Lagavulin and Oban, was awarded a Shorty Award for Best Influencer Marketing Campaign for this yule log video starring Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman.

The 44-minute video shows Offerman sitting by a crackling fireplace, staring broodingly into the camera, and occasionally savoring a sip of his drink. Thanks to the simple seasonal premise and Offerman’s unique brand, the video was a viral hit.

9. GAP: Styld.by

Influencers: Refinery29, Celebrity Blogs

GAP’s successful Styld.by campaign featured a number of influential social media personalities from blogging giants like Refinery29 and WhoWhatWhere, showing how they incorporate GAP clothing into their personal wardrobes. Users viewing the influencers’ posts on social media were given options to “Shop this Look” conveniently in the caption of photos.

Thanks to the involvement of multiple influencers from different niches, GAP’s campaign had enormous reach.

10. Stride Gum: Mad Intense Gum

Influencer: DJ Khaled

If anyone has figured out how to gain a loyal following on Snapchat, it’s hip-hop artist and producer DJ Khaled. Once a minor figure in the music world, Khaled has enjoyed an unprecedented level of success on the ephemeral photo-sharing app, with each of his snaps garnering over 3 million views on average.

“DJ Khaled has completely cracked the platform,” said Emmanuel Seuge, senior vice president for content at Coca-Cola, one of Snapchat’s major advertisers. “He’s the king of Snapchat.”

His “King of Snapchat” status means Khaled is in high-demand for influencer campaigns with brands. He regularly takes part in “Snapchat takeovers,” where a brand hands over the reigns of their corporate Snapchat to Khaled for a brief period of largely unfiltered antics.

Working with W+K London, Stride Gum launched a Snapchat takeover campaign with Khaled last year to promote its “Mad Intense Gum” campaign. The brand called the takeover “an unpredictable, fun day for all his followers.”

This Manhattan-based beauty startup (which was recently named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2017) owes much of their seemingly overnight cult status to their ever-expanding network of super fans and micro-influencers — those people who may have high influence, but low individual reach.

Instead of paying a few big names to promote their minimal skincare and cosmetics, the brand relies on “regular women” to spread the word.

“What’s very motivating to us is this idea of every single woman being an influencer,” Glossier CEO Emily Weiss told Quartz. Glossier recently introduced a referral program to enable its more influential followers to offer product discounts and other incentives to their unique networks.

SUPER fun art and display wall in basement playroom

This art project is one of the most fun I've tackled so I had to share it with you! The basement in this house is much bigger than our old one, which is one of the aspects that really made us fall in love with this home. We're basement people, we just love them!

So anyway, we have a space down there that we turned into more of a kid area and it's been WONDERFUL. All the toys, Legos, video games stay in this spot. Somehow Nerf bullets keep finding there way all over. ;)

I really want to make this area a cozy and fun spot for our son and his friends. This where all the sleepover happen so they are down there a lot. I did an Instagram collaboration with a company a few weeks ago and love how this turned out so much, I wanted to share it here too. This post is not sponsored -- I was so thrilled with the product I wanted to show you. I like sharing quality products and companies! Nations Photo Lab is a canvas company and they offered some free large canvases -- I knew right away I wanted to use them in that kid space.

I want to make this a space full of things that our boy loves, so I gathered all of his favorite things -- specifically Nerf bullets, basketballs, Legos, music items and finally...Fortnite. 😆 (For those of you who don't know, it's a video game that is ALL the rage right now.)

I put the items on a poster board on the floor, then stood above and took pictures. They turned out SO cool and he was thrilled. When I sent them off to be made, I expected them to be similar to flimsy canvases I've seen before -- stretched across a frame.

When these arrived in the mail (wonderfully packaged by the way) I was THRILLED with the quality. The canvases are stretched over what I'm assuming is wood -- so they are solid and substantial:

They are not flimsy at all -- I didn't feel like I needed to baby them. Each print came with hanging wires already installed on the back too.

I have a tip for hanging anything with wire -- and it will save you SO MUCH time and effort!! Just take a piece of wood -- I use a paint stick. Insert a screw into the wood anywhere, I usually go lower but it depends on the art and where you're hanging it:

Then you'll "hang" the art on the screw head:

Hold up the art by the wood and when you find exactly where you want it, push into the wood so that the screw leaves a small hole in the wall:

To get it super exact I would suggest using a short screw -- that way you can hold the art up very close to the wall to get it just where you want it.

That hanging method helped a ton for the layout I decided on! Here's how it turned out:

We just think it's SO fun and our son is so tickled by it. It really meant a lot to him that I used his favorite things. His buddies all comment on it too -- it's the cutest thing ever.

I also hung the EKET boxes from IKEA along the top of the wall. Once I figured out how to hang them that part went really quick:

I wanted something to display his Lego sets that would be somewhat protected from dust and would keep them away from small hands.

I think eventually I'll add more boxes across the top -- we'll see! This spot makes us smile and the prints are so bright and colorful. I'm super impressed with the quality!:
