Austrian GP 2023 Post-Race Reflection
I was watching the post-race review show and as soon as I turned it on, I heard Ms. Thing say that p7 is Lewis's worst result at Red Bull Ring ever. And in the post-race interview he was NOT having it by his facial expression. He wont ever say that he's mad at the team out loud, but you can pretty much tell he's fed up with how volatile the car is.
Overall the race was fine. Not as exciting as Canada. Those 3 laps where Charles was leading was pretty cool. What wasn't cool was Max closing the gap a second after every lap.
Ferrari are actually listening to Charles and Carlos with strategy calls. It only took like 10 races but they finally got there
But Ferrari had me pressed with the botched double-stacking pitstops like Carlos lost so much time 😭. I wonder if that and the 5 second penalty didn't happen, would he have been on the podium?
Carlos saying to keep Lando within DRS so that they can both keep Checo behind was so sexy. Like we love a master strategist
Honestly Carlando were carrying that whole race on their back. Their fight was the most exciting part of the race. We honestly needed 2 drivers of the day because both of them deserve it
I don't know what dirt RedBull has on the FIA or whatever but I definitely saw Checo go over track limits a lot when he was in front of Lewis. I'm not a Checo hater (I've actually been defending him against Danny Ric fans) but I need everyone to be for real. He definitely deserved a 5 second penalty throughout the race and the fact that he didn't is kinda shocking
Too many time penalties, like I've never seen a race have so many people get black and white flagged. I stopped counting after 7 penalties (and I heard Yuki got a 10 second penalty at some point). But the FIA need to fix it like all drivers at some point exceeded track limits. That's not normal at all
I was hoping Alex could hold onto p10 because a back to back points finish would have been incredible. Both Williams have shown massive improvement. Even Logan was p9 at one point of the race (it was because everyone went in for a pitstop but a point scoring position is a point scoring position). I do think Logan will be the next rookie to score points at some point
Did Aston Martin screw Stroll over with the strategy? Am I misremembering or did he have to pit a lot? I am just baffled because he started 6th so how did he fall so behind? They didn't show much of his race so I couldn't tell
The fight for p16 was very entertaining but I couldn't stop quoting the "they're having a mid off" tweet in my head 😭. It's not funny when you realize Alfa Romeo and AlphaTauri have been regressing with race pace by a huge margin, and I like their drivers
I am pretty neutral about Silverstone, that way I won't be too upset if Mercedes's upgrades don't work that much

New Fic Alert!!!!!!
ignite the light by monsterloot on ao3 follows a sharp-witted, socially awkward Technoblade as he gets pulled into staying just one more night in Manberg, a town meant only to be a small pitstop in his journey.
I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Tumblr media
It's full of little witticisms, all of which serve to (1) delight and entertain, (2) establish character, and (3) set up worldbuilding. ignite the light would be worth the read for its execution of any one of these, but instead it chooses to deliver on all of them.
Tumblr media
It's also an excellent fic for scamming and fast talking, which???? Surprisingly I don't see a lot of in the fandom, considering the source material. But here there are just.. so many scams. It's incredible.
Going along with that, the dialogue is a delight! I attribute this largely to the characterization being on point-everyone has passed the vibe check so far!! Despite involving a good amount of SBI interactions, the story neatly sidesteps common pitfalls of fanon. How? Probably black magic, I have no idea.
Tumblr media
The worldbuilding is just. Hilarious. Outrageous and understated. Lots of minecraft mechanics and casual confirmation of things like Wilbur's part-fridge heritage (Techno is as confused as you are). It leans into the dsmp rule of what would be funniest but then provides good structure for the resulting chaos.
Tumblr media
Also?????? It only has 15 kudos???? It's very well written, but hasn't gotten much attention. If you're at all interested, maybe give it chance! Give it some love!

Some people asked me to do a transcript of the radio interview from today, and since I’m trying to procrastonate on painting my living room, here we go.
Host: Canada’s most decorated figure skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, have been traveling right across the country. They’re releasing a new book about their skating experiences as well, and they’re joining us here, making a pitstop on the Evan Something Show. Tessa and Scott, thank you so much for joining us. What has it been like to go to all of these cities that you’ve never been to before?
TV: It’s so special. That was really part of the driving force behind putting this tour together and we said repeatedly that the support we’ve received over the past two decades of our career has been incredible heartwarming and for us to be able to celebrate that success and share special moments with these people who have been such a part of our career is touching. We hope it’s an entertaining show; we hope it’s different and we’re having so much fun pouring all of our energy and putting our hearts in this. Such an incredible cast, not to mention that.
Host: Yeah. And you’re actually seeing fans across Canada. I gotta ask you, Scott what is the number one thing that you get asked or that you hear from fans when you meet them face to face?
SM: Oh my gosh. I think a lot of it has to do with traveling for the tour, with how we get from city to city. I mean it’s a lot to get to - we have 30 dates, 27 cities - like you said, so um being able to travel on the bus is a bit of a grind but we’re really enjoying that and thats what people want to know is why we want to do this and how we’re actually doing it, because it’s a pretty fun schedule.
Host: You guys are a team on the ice, of course and you’re releasing this book about your skating experiences. Scott, what made you want to be part of this project?
SM: Well what’s interesting about going back to finish our book in a way is that the bulk of our career wasn’t in the book, so it didn’t feel right to end our story after 2010 when we learned more about each other and the sport and about pushing ourselves from 2010 to 2018. So it only made sense to go back. It was really a fun process for us, to work with Steve Milton, and kind of relive all the moments and just reflect on how fulfill and challenging the last two years of our career working in Montreal with Marie-France and Patrice and our B2Ten team. I mean, were probably the moments from our career we’ll miss the most, kind of moving forward. But it was really fun doing this project, to reflect on that, and also in a way, reflecting on how we want to continue to go forward. And a big part of that is doing The Thank You Canada Tour, trying to be a part of a show that is different, pushing ourselves creatively outside of our competitive sphere, and I think that’s a huge challenge to us, but one that has us really excited at the moment.
Host: Tessa, Scott’s talking about some of the more challenging times - do you miss any of those moments?
SM: Absolutely.
TV: Definitely! But, you know, we’re facing new challenges, and part of that comes with putting together a tour, part of that just comes with that post-olympic crash. And reevaluating our lives and figuring out “okay, what is our new purpose, what is our new goal”, redefining ourselves beyond the scope of what it means to be an athlete. And sort of reconciling that has proven to be difficult. You know, it’s a constant evolution and progression and we’re just continuing to learn about ourselves, and I think that any athlete, anyone going through that transitional period, it’s not always easy, it’s not always clear.
Host: Yeah. When you say post-olympic crash, I mean not everybody will know what that feels like, of course. You guys share that experience together. What was it like for you both to go through that period?
SM: It’s always different than I expect it to be, from each games that we went to, and 2006 when we were alternates. It was always a little bit of a letdown. The starting of a new cycle, the starting of new challenges. So, I think this time, the crash was pretty epic because there’s a good chance we won’t have the opportunity to go back and that was all too real. But at the same time, we’re much more equipped to handle it. And as Tessa talked about, the excitement of new challenges and focusing on that and continuing to push ourselves, I think we take a lot of comfort in. So this tour, being able to share our memories and kind of looking back at all of our careers, the last twenty years of our lives with the fans that have always been there to support us, in a way it’s a coping mechanism, I guess. But it’s also very fulfilling and it gives us a lot of new energy to put into new projects. I think it will be an interesting finish to our chapter of what could be our amateur career, looking back at it one last time and then maybe moving forward to what you maybe will see in the second half - which is a lot of an entertainment-based show. Something that we’re super proud of and can’t wait to see the reactions that we get from different people.
Host: Okay, Tessa. Be honest, skating is one thing - is it hard to write something with Scott?
TV: Well, we had a lot of help with Steve Milton and he’s been telling our story from the time we were young as a reporter, so no one know the sport better, no one knows us better than Steve, and we’re able to sit down with him and be totally open and vulnerable and it was up to him to sort of weave the tale and share that honest feedback. We love him. We love how he presented our story.
SM: It’s hard to do anything with me.
Host: Is that right? Is there still - you guys have been together, been a team for so long - do you think the bickering, or you know the tensions over time get better or worse?
SM: Well first, we’ve never really been a team that had bickering. You know we had a pretty strong relationship early on, but we worked at it, and we know that when we take on a project, we’re much stronger together. We still love working together. I think what’s interesting about us is that we’ve worked together for so long but we still have very different perspectives and come at things from very different ways. And we see that as a strength. Yeah, I don't think we’re that type fo team that bickers, we’re each other’s biggest fans. I’m always looking forward to getting Tessa’s perspective on things and getting her viewpoint and always interesting and always very different than mine. It’s kind of neat to still, after twenty-one years, to go into a project and still be excited to work with someone.
Host: Tessa, what do you think about that?
TV: I feel the same way. We don’t, we don’t bicker. We’ve never been that team, I think. We have a very effective way of communicating and as Scott mentioned, that’s something we’ve worked very hard at. And we know that time working on any project is limited and we’re now very good at being productive with our time. It’s nice to dive into different projects, I mean of course we’re connected on the ice and our skating will sort of be at the core of that partnership, but it depends on producing this tour or the book, to use that business partnership in different realms is also interesting.

Styrian Grand Prix Review
There has been a role reversal it seems, as the race we got in France, was more like what we expected to get at the Red Bull Ring, whereas this weekend’s race didn’t quite give us the same level of action unfortunately!
It has been a flawless weekend for Verstappen’s side of the garage, as he converted his pole position into his 3rd win at the team’s home track. He was never really troubled during the race, with the car working the tyres so well, the only slight worry, was some issues with the brake pads over kerbs! Coming back here again in a week’s time, he will be the favourite, and it may only be a mistake or adverse weather, which could stop him from winning again! Looking at Perez’s weekend, there is the argument that it was just the slow pitstop that cost him a podium, however, if Bottas hadn’t of got the harsh penalty, he wouldn’t have had a chance! He is getting better at qualifying on a Saturday, yet he needs to improve fast, as if the Mercedes had started 2nd and 3rd, with Perez back in 5th, there’s a chance it could have been a different winner!
Even when we believed that Mercedes would have a challenge on their hands this year, no one thought that they would go this long without a win, and more importantly, simply lack pace compared to Red Bull. The mood shift in the team is clear to see, and with no major upgrades coming, it is not going to be easy to defend their string of titles! Hamilton did all he could in the race, his car just ate through its tyres more than Max’s did, and was lucky to not spin exiting Turn 4! Sunday was not too bad for Bottas, when you see how much Lewis was struggling, him finishing on the podium will do him well, as contract talks continue up and down the paddock! Next weekend will obviously be another chance for them to fight back, although it would take quite an upset for them to overturn their pace deficit!
Yet again, it has been a mixed weekend for McLaren, with Norris getting the most out of the car, being best of the rest, however, he was quite a long way behind the front runners, which was surprising given their pace on Saturday. Even more confusing though, was where all the pace went for Ricciardo on Friday night. He made a brilliant start to the race, gaining 5 places up to 8th, yet then got unlucky, as he lost power for a lap, dropping back to where he started! He really should have been able to make up at least a few places during the rest of the race, as when you see Leclerc’s race, in a similarly paced car, you would expect Daniel to do a similar job!
Talking of Ferrari, I will admit I was completely wrong about them, as despite the long straights, they were very quick in the race, and managed to reverse their tyre saving abilities from France. Sainz recovered superbly, after being nowhere near his teammate in qualifying. If it hadn’t of been for a slow Hamilton, he may even have had a shot at Lando. For Leclerc, he definitely could have been 5th, but he made a mistake on Lap 1, by trying to get into Gasly’s slipstream too early, damaging his wing in the process, and was lucky to not get a penalty. Despite the mistake, the fight back was incredible, going from last to 7th. Giving him driver of the day was a bit weird in my opinion, as although the comeback was excellent, he was the one who put himself in that position, and ruined someone else’s race!
I am really enjoying watching this new happy go lucky Alonso, who is just loving racing, and everything else is a bonus! 8th was really the best he could do, as all those in front of him were quite a bit faster than him. Meanwhile, Ocon is just nowhere right now, for most of that race, he was well down the order, not able to pass Alfa Romeo’s, and not far ahead of the Haas’.
Stroll may be the best driver at 1st laps on the grid, as he always can find the right gap, to gain some positions at the start. The team did a good strategy again, and 9th was all they could do really. Vettel was just outside the points, stuck behind an Alfa Romeo. Alpha Tauri were not able to convert the strong qualifying they had, as Gasly was out after Lap 1, after the contact with Leclerc, which was tough to call, but probably more on Leclerc. Tsunoda was finally able to have a trouble free weekend, and it was at the big bosses’ home track, so he may only have got a single point, but it may help his standing in the team!
There are no words to describe the amount of bad luck that George Russell has had in F1, he may have made mistakes before whilst in good positions, such as Imola in the past 2 runnings, but he has also lost out on great results many times, through no fault of is own! He made a good start, and was up to 8th, however, kept losing pneumatic pressure during the race, necessitating a few pit stops, thus ruining his race. I do hope next weekend is better for him! Latifi was caught up in the aftermath of the Gasly-Leclerc incident, and lost a lap early on.
Alfa Romeo barely missed points with Kimi, again showing that the power in the Ferrari is pretty good, and that Kimi still has it! Giovinazzi was another mixed up in the Lap 1 chaos, as he was spun around, so any chances of points were lost early on! Haas as expected were on their own, but entertained themselves with some close battles!
It is an absolute joke, that we were predicted rain all weekend, and apart from some spots in FP2, it only begins to fall once the race has finished. It would be great if we got some next weekend, to add another dimension to this fantastic year of racing!

Day 36 | Ben Lomond: On the last of four fun-filled days in Queenstown, we decided it was past time to do a significant hike! We ambitiously selected Ben Lomond, a walk that started in city and featured at the top of the ‘best walks in and around Queenstown’ blogs that we’d scrolled through the night before. It was one of the toughest hikes that we’ve ever done, but the endorphins and spectacular views from the top were ample reward.
The Ben Lomond Trail technically starts from the top of the gondola linking Queenstown to a nearby mountain, and all prospective hikers face a choice: pay NZD 44 per person to take the gondola, or take the Tiki Trail (c.60 minute walk). While the Tiki Trail is less than 5km in length, it climbs c.500m, winding its way up the forested mountainside and taking you past zip-lines and mountain bike tracks. Feeling thrifty and up for a challenge, we trudged determinedly up the Tiki Trail. It was a nice path (and the trees shaded us from the hot sun), but in retrospect augmenting an already challenging hike may not have been the best idea!
From the top of the gondola, the Ben Lomond trail traverses the side of the mountain and then climbs towards the ‘saddle’ that connects its peak to that of Ben Lomond. The climb started gently, but gradually steepened as we neared the saddle. A combination of the intensifying physical exertion, the unyielding sun, and the shadeless terrain started to sap our energy, and we stopped for lunch (two delicious salad boxes) just before reaching the saddle (c.2 hours from the gondola).
Once Matt’s face began to look less tomato-like, we set off again eager to reach the summit of Ben Lomond. The walk from the saddle to the summit is not long – just less than one hour – but holy moly it is GRUELLING. Near vertical in some places and only slightly less forgiving in others, we slowly scrambled our way to the top. It was absolutely stunning, with views almost as rewarding as those of Isthmus Peak. You could follow Lake Wakatipu 180’, as it curved all the way around from Queenstown to reach towards snow-capped mountain ranges in the distance. The summit was also home to NZ’s most audacious Kea (alpine parrot). Having worked out how to undo bag zips, it terrorised tired hikers in a hunt for food. Very entertaining!
With a well-deserved break behind us, we began the descent back towards Queenstown. As we neared the end of the Ben Lomond Trail, Claire rather unsubtly inserted into conversation that she had been day-dreaming of ice-cream for the past 30 minutes... One pitstop later and she left the gondola cafe with a big Hokey Pokey ice-cream and an even bigger smile!
A brilliant day finished with long showers and quick dinners, before two very tired campers retreated to bed to fall asleep in front of The Incredibles 2.

State’s Videos of the Week #20
Tumblr media
I love doing things on my own. The enjoyment of reading a book or making notes with a pint of Guinness in your own company is blissful, particularly if you frequent an establishment with a regular, slightly eccentric and elderly clientele. I do this at least once a week. Recently, on one of my solo jaunts, a man in his late fifties sat at my table to ask why I was alone. He was perplexed because his daughter, who is a similar age to me, would never do this. The times when I go to the cinema, mosey around town, or have dinner by myself are imperative. You don’t have to worry about making conversation, or unknowingly talking through the remain of a burrito wedged between your teeth. I’m far from a misanthropist, I’m the complete opposite. I love spending time with friends and family, making up stupid jokes to amuse them or play pool to get in some exercise of some description. However, there’s nothing like mentally switching off and not having to construct a sentence, ask and answer questions about what’s going on in my life, articulate ideas and feelings and avoid confrontations or opinionated debates about trivial things. Instead, you can eavesdrop on conversations, watch awkward dates or Arsenal play in total solitude. Being able to do these things on your own is not easy for everyone. I’m always surprised by the reactions I’m met with when people learn that I’m a lone ranger. It’s a mix of confused pity, yet I’ve had numerous people say that they wish they could do it, too. It’s not an ordeal though, it’s probably the easiest thing you can do and it’s so remarkably beneficial to your sanity. I’d go insane if I was denied my solo Guinness expeditions.
The same goes for bands when they are independently creating and releasing music. This week there was an astonishing amount of bands on the cusp of releasing debut LPs through independent labels. The freedom and support given to young musicians allows them to experiment with arrangements, the limits of their instruments and how the synergy between band members can effortlessly create a sound that will become synonymous to their discography which they can develop and hone throughout their career. There’s a lot to be said for being granted that independence to do and be completely comfortable with yourself and your own company because it translate to every aspect of your life, especially your work.
Forth Wanderers – ‘Slop’ (Father / Daughter Records)
Think of the ways you tried to get the attention of someone you felt amorously towards. Did you make them a mix-cd compilation brimming with songs that you carefully curated to convey your affection? Maybe you sent them a Valentine’s card, or did what everyone does and got your friend to be the go-between cupid and plant a seed of love only for the tomato feed to be withheld, never giving love an opportunity to bud. Ben Guterl is the principle songwriter, guitarist and founding member of Forth Wanderers, a group of five friends (all under the age of 21) from New Jersey, and back in 2013 he wrote music as a way to talk to singer, Ava Trilling. Three years later, Ava has just graduated from high school and Forth Wanderers unveiled Slop, their EP which is due for a mid-November release. The single sounds like that wonderful noncommittal, indie-garage that you would expect from a group of angsty teens. The self-made video indicates that even though they look as though they are taking themselves a little too seriously they are actually having fun writing and making music as a group of friends.
Japanese Breakfast – ‘Everybody Wants to Love You’ (Dead Oceans)
Watching Japanese Breakfast’s video for the current single ‘Everybody Wants to Love You’, from debut album, Psychopomp is the closest that I have had to an outer body experience, kind of. Mastermind Michelle Zauner enjoys the antics of a weekend evening on her own. Dressed as a Geisha she plays pool, drinks at a bar and rambles around town in the dark. Japanese Breakfast is the side-project Zauner devised when she returned to Oregon to spend time with her sick mother. Taking a break from her band, Little Big League, she decided to challenge herself by writing a song everyday as well simultaneously revamping old material and demos that she had made. The result is a collection of nine fuzzy dream-pop indie songs (lasting twenty-five minutes) that are equally infectious and sombre.
Dirty Projectors – ‘Keep Your Name’ (Domino)
‘Keep Your Name’, is the first single to be released by Dirty Projectors since their 2012 album, Swing Lo Magellan which provided somewhat of an insight into the direction of music that they would continue with in the future. Think of the dense use of drum machine from that record’s opening track, ‘Offspring Are Blank.’ Admittedly, Dirty Projectors return with ‘Keep Your Name’ had me frowning at my screen for the entirety of the video because I was, on first impression, left a little confused. Dave Longstreth’s vocal has been tampered with, sounding like the world around him is crumbling in slow motion. It’s a bit disconcerting, especially when the song sounds like it’s trying to emulate Bon Iver’s musical make over of late. No doubt, ‘Keep Your Name’ has increased intrigue amongst fans with how their forthcoming eight album will sound. Hmmmm….
KLLO – ‘Sense’ (Different Recordings)
Kllo are Melbourne based duo comprised of cousins, Simon Lam and Chloe Kaul. The video for ‘Sense’ follows the band on various expeditions on a beach, a shopping centre, drinking bubble tea, hanging out on a balcony and performing. Their music moves between retro inspired, sweet melodies that would not sound out of place played alongside mellow garage songs from the early 2000s. Their debut EP, Well Worn, was released earlier this year and, in truth, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but ‘Sense’ is a lovely lullaby to ease your weekend to yet another untimely end. The video is incredibly relaxing, too.
No Monster Club – ‘Do The Mess Around’ (No Monster Club)
I really do love No Monster Club. They’re extremely fun to see live and they always make the most entertaining music videos. In their latest video for ‘Do The Mess Around’, the guys are making their way to play a big gig. Excitedly they take to the road, squeezed close together in a van, and make some pitstops along the way at a petrol station and stretch their legs and instruments to perform the single by a stream with inflatable animals. The mood of the journey takes a sinister turn when, taking a bathroom break in the woods, one member is struck and killed. One by one, No Monster Club are killed off and by the end their cadavers have been collected by a crazed fan who constructs a stage in his lair and enjoys a marionette style private show from the deceased band. Yikes.

Move on the Rock ’n’ Roll walking tour for a peek of London
New Post has been published on https://pagedesignhub.com/move-on-the-rock-n-roll-walking-tour-for-a-peek-of-london/
Move on the Rock ’n’ Roll walking tour for a peek of London
Rock ’n’ roll can be viewed as American property, but it’s hard to disclaim that much of the genre’s history, and some of its largest names, too, come from the opposite side of the pond.
London was swinging inside the mid-Nineteen Sixties, and from arts, fashion to the song, it turned into the epicenter of a cultural revolution that changed the arena forever.
Little may additionally have transpired within the call of improvement and song from the time of the London Blitz, but in the 1960s, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix et al, had been cruising along Soho’s sidewalk and cavorting on King’s Street.

Rolex 24Hrs of Daytona Review
In most endurance races like this one, we see the field stringing out, finding their place in the pecking order, and we keep entertained by the constant flurry of pitstops, and strategies that take place, with the odd bit of close wheel to wheel action. However, no one seemed to tell the 49 teams who took to the infamous American racecourse that, as we saw intense battles throughout the race in 3 of the 5 classes, which made it feel more like a sprint race, than a 24 hour race.
This meant that we were treated to one of the best Rolex 24’s in a long time, with a showdown for the win to cap it off, but I will get into how each class did in a second, first I do need to address some of the issues with the race. Although you could argue they helped the racing to be so good, it took away some of the fairness and integrity of the racing in my view. This mostly centres around the caution procedure, which I talked about in the preview article as well, the way in which different classes are allowed to pit at different times, and then before the restart the pack is sorted into class order, just removes some of the strategic element from the race of being stuck in traffic, and the excitement of faster cars trying to get through slower ones, but most of all it just makes the race feel scripted and increases caution time, instead of letting it play out by itself. The different pit laps for Prototypes and GT cars kind of makes sense, in terms of safety, but sorting the pack does not in my view. On the other hand, I will praise the IMSA officials for their calls, both on when to bring out the caution, but even more so on penalty decisions, I don’t think I heard a questionable one being given, which is much better than other racing series do!
Let’s start with the bottom class, GTD and work forwards, this was expected to be the most exciting class, with so many varied cars taking part, and it did not disappoint for most of the race. To begin with there were 4 different manufacturers in the top 4 places, then gradually we saw the Mercedes pair of 75 and 57 come to the fore, they did not dominate the class, and were frequently under attack from Aston Martin’s, Porsche’s and BMW’s, as well as the 21 Ferrari, which got pinned onto the grass and spun around. Yet in the end no one could stop them from taking home a 1-2, with the 57 leading home the 75, as this class grows to encompass the entire GT field next year, I am sure we will continue to enjoy the action they give us.
With there being only 6 cars in the GTLM field, as the class gets disbanded soon, we did not expect too much from them, as there shouldn’t been a lot of competition, how wrong we were! Seemingly the entire field was in the battle for the win, even the Weathertech Porsche who was spun just before the race started. Much like the Mercedes in GTD, the two Corvette’s established their position at the front of the race early on, however many times through the race we cut to them being attacked by the Ferrari and BMW’s. Much like the GTD class though, they also could not be entirely usurped, as every time another car got the lead, the GM cars just worked away and brought it back to them, to complete a brilliant 1-2 for the team, a great way to sign off the class, even if the winning No. 3 car had a small crash on the parade lap.
LMP3 was not nearly as bad as expected, yes they did cause some of the cautions, and there was not really any in class battles, however they were not ruining the race for other classes that much, even if they could not match the GTLM’s for pace, which I am sure made restarts annoying, but otherwise they stayed on the whole out of trouble. The Riley Motorsports No. 74 took the win by 3 laps, which shows how spread out the field was. In my opinion, it is not worth having the class in the main race, unless they find some way to improve the racing, and reduce the crashes and spins, I do feel like they were mostly there to boost the car count, and whilst it was not a farce as we feared, it wasn’t great either.
For the LMP2’s, a class which is normally super competitive, they were surprisingly spread out, the pace difference throughout the race for the lead cars, meant that gaps slowly appeared and became laps before long. Once again, the Dallara which had shown pace last weekend, climbed through the field, only to be struck with more issues, this time a damaged gearbox, believed to be broken teeth on one of the gears. The No. 18 Era Motorsport car benefited from the wave arounds, which you can argue either way about how the affect the racing, to get back on the lead lap with the No.8 Tower Motorsport car, which had led so much of the race. It was looking so good for that team, until a strategy mix up at the end, caused them to do one more pitstop than the 18 car, gifting them the win in class. It will hurt for the 8 team so much, but they will learn from this, and come back stronger next time.
Now for the top class, which turned a good race, into a brilliant one. It became clear early on, that the similar pace of all the DPi’s, regular cautions and the pack bunching together under yellow, would keep them all close together and provide us with amazing action. It was quiet early on, but from Sunday morning, things did start to heat up. However, during the night, both the 55 Mazda and the 5 Cadillac had issues and dropped many laps back, it seemed as though Mazda had lost another chance at the win due to reliability, yet it was not over for them just yet. At the front, it was the 10, 31 and 01, before the 48 came on strong overnight, leading a good portion of the race. The 60 was just about hanging on, but clearly could not fight for the win. Kobayashi was incredible on restarts in the 48, going around the outside of other DPi’s who were being cautious on cold tyres, however one time we was too brave, and was forced on to the grass going into Turn 1, causing him to spin whilst battling for the lead, he would come back from it, but I am sure he got a talking to about it.
The 31 car, which had looked the fastest car all week, or on par with the 01, had started to have some issues early in the morning, as the floor was damaged and the exhaust sounded broken, in the end a seemingly unrelated issue cropped up when the car got stuck in 3rd gear, it got fixed but they were unable to catch the DPi’s again. Meanwhile, the Mazda had used good pace and wave rounds to get back on the lead lap, and was up to 2nd as the race entered the last few hours. Then crucially the top 4 split strategies, the 01 and 48 did an undercut to get fresh tyres and pass the two leaders on track, whilst the 10 and 55 ran the full stint, which would allow them to short fill on the last stop. The 01 and 48 were able to get ahead, and hold off the two behind, yet when the final stops came, it swapped back around with the 10 now having an 8 second lead on the 01 who just beat the 55 out of the pits.
The 01 showed it was one of the fastest cars as it closed down the leader, and had many strong attempts to take the lead, but it could not complete the move. Meanwhile the 55 Mazda just lacked the pace to stay with the 01, it did slowly catch the 10, however was never able to challenge it, then a storming Kobayashi in the 48 blew past Tincknell’s Mazda with a few laps to go. Up front the 01 had settled in right behind the 10, unable to get past, but possibly saving up for a last ditch chance. We would never see if it could have taken the win, as a second puncture for the CGR team ruined their race and dropped them to 5th. This allowed the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura, to come home for their third Rolex 24 win in a row, their first in the Acura, and also possibly their best yet given the many battles they had to endure to keep the lead.
It was a brilliant race to watch, with battles up and down the field keeping you glued to the screen, and the tension in the last few hours was unrivalled. This was a perfect way to start another season of racing, and I am sure has given many people including myself, the craving for so much more!
