New Expansion, new Miqo'te guy

Looking back before Dawntrail hits. Mainly from MSQ, jobs, tribal, deliveries and long quests that I done. Someone mention hair colours meme and this happened. There's a lot of sandy hair cats.

Might have left out other male cats by accident or not having pics of them on my PC (Will update if found decent pics). Or somehow fuzzy memory from doing stuff after EW. Would probably do one for the women and the Miq'ttens . I didn't include Squadron cats

It throughly amused me that Miqo'te men have such intense energy vibes (even Hylnyan's own mate) based on the way Miqo'te men moves. Since I gotten to used to how chill and calming Hylnyan is as a cat person.

A Realm Reborn

A'aba. His cat boy sit/delinquent squat and his sideburns somehow always reminds me of Logan / Wolverine.

V'mah Tia for some reason I always thought he was a Lancer.

Coeurl King isn't included because Hylnyan tend to be more busy kicking his ass than taking decent photos

Other than G'raha, Nhaza'a Jaab is a recurring character for tribal stuff. Hylnyan had chased him out of Stormblood and ARR at least. and probably HW when I resub hopefully before DT

Heavensward

I thought Heavensward had no Miqo'te men. Until they turn up in job quests post EW. Coerthas be too cold for Miqo'te? But there's a Miqo'te soldier in Haurchefant's office.

Stormblood

Specifically went and do M'zhet Tia's quest line because of his Nanaki / Red XIII references.

M'zhet Tia runs around in Tribal quest a lot for the sake of wooing J'olhmym. The other cute red cat

X'rhun tia's kid Arya is at Mor Dhona and Hylnyan be like if she needs help - seek out that Big Hrothgar with that Viera lady across the street there, mention Hylnyan's name if need be.

Shadowbringers

Because Exarch seems like he has much stories to tell of his life

Mao-Ladd. I always thought of the "Mao" part of his name is "cat" in mandarin. And Ladd as in Lad and his name is practically Cat Boy to me.

I may or may not be missing anyone from the Crystarium staff

A beautiful exploration of Harry’s demons in eighth year & how Draco can help exorcise them. How do I know I'm not a ghost? just punched me the solar plexus, so beautiful and so awful for Harry, and how tenderly Draco treats him, while still being Draco. One of the two masterclasses in short fic on this list! How MA says so much in so few words—I’m in awe.

Title & Possession by anon (49k words, E)

Harry Potter’s life is going well in the aftermath of the war. Sure, his house is dark and run-down and might hate him (while his house elf definitely hates him). But other than that, things are good. Except, yeah, okay, Hermione and Ron are no longer on speaking terms. Worse, they keep trying to get Harry to pick sides. But otherwise, Harry couldn’t be happier. Well. Except for the fact that Ginny is being super weird about their relationship and never wants to have sex or talk about the future. But other than that, Harry is perfectly fine, thankyouverymuch. At least, he is until Draco Malfoy sues him for ownership of Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. Then Harry really isn’t fine at all.

This fic is FUNNY. Harry is such a wally, so perfectly in-character as our awkward, repressed, depressed, hilarious little cinnamon roll (and Draco is so proud and petty and desperate for Harry too). The romance is so well-deserved by both, and we love a Harry-realizing-his-sexuality fic (SO well-done here—the tension is scorching!).

Everybody Hates a Tourist by anon (51.5k, E)

On a stag do in sunny Brighton with the Gryffindor lads, the last person Harry expects to run into is Draco Malfoy. After a glimpse of Malfoy’s Muggle life in Britain’s gay capital, Harry’s curiosity gets the better of him and he finds himself returning to the seaside again and again, drawn to the city, drawn to this new version of Malfoy that Harry barely recognises from school. Meanwhile, Draco’s just trying to live his big and best queer life: working for the weekend, chasing hot men, getting lost in Brighton's nightlife, and making friends with the neighbourhood cats. Why does his former school rival and crush have to show up and spoil everything?

An absolute banger on the first day of the fest. Come for the absolutely perfect characterization of Harry & Draco, stay for the lush descriptions of Brighton and EVERYWHERE. The perfect start-of-summer fic, absolutely impeccable, gentle, gorgeous summer vibes (conveniently when where I live FINALLY started getting hot). So many elements to love here: Harry learning about himself, gently and with grace from everyone around him, the TEXTING (absolutely perfect), the side characters with perfect characterization (Seamus at the hotel!), the flirting, DRACO BUYING HARRY A LEATHER JACKET (;_;). Just bury me dead; this fic was so lovely & it’s all I need.

Eighth year will forever have my heart for some angsty healing, and MA has captured this so beautifully. This art is not only beautiful (the animations! the color palette! both Harry & Draco! Idk how to compliment art!), but it’s such a gorgeous journey for Harry—from the trauma of the war towards happiness again. Exactly what our darling boy deserves <3

Alright lads, it’s that time again: where are the resources going?

EX At current count, we have 170 powerups, with 20 more coming from the monthly exchange for 190. We have only 710 Champion Spirits. Which. Is not many. I’m going to do this month and next month’s 1:4 exchanges for spirits. So we’ll plan 170 powerups, and 790 spirits. 70 per week, four weeks, for 280 more spirits, putting us up to 1070. This feels safer than it has. With 170 powerups, we’re not looking at many EX options. I wouldn’t really want to go more than three with that count.

Scout targets are Battle Tower Leon, Nemona, Olympia, and Drasna. Olympia and Drasna carry the unique powerups, so those two are set barring the spirits. At present, I intend to EX all of them, but might shy away from Leon, who I feel like is better at DPS than sync. Assuming all four, that puts us to 140 powerups, and 870 spirits.

The last one is a bit of a tossup. On the one hand, I am considering Marley. We have a Gauntlet coming up, and I think she’s pretty routinely behind as a tank. The added stats and Support EX would massively overhaul the DPS of her allies, finishing fights in better time. But. I also know it’s Moltres, and I do not want to do a long streak with Moltres right now. So legitimately? I’m considering Lodge Calem. I don’t dislike Calem, and I love Fennekin. I actually kinda like its kit? I know it’s not fantastic, but faves over meta, right? We’ll see if I crack.

More sane options include SS Silver, who is still not EX, and...actually, that’s it. That’s the only smarter option. There’s Rose too, but I have had zero problems with CS at 1/5. So likely, I’ll debate between Marley and Calem, and if pulls go well, might consider both. But assuming only 1, that’s 125 powerups, and 820 spirits.

LEVEL 150 I have 304 Certificates. And not a single one will be used until next month. If we see another level increase, I need these for keeping up with the top favorites. If I do wind up cracking for EX Lodge Calem, I will consider it provided the level cap remains 150.

CANDY General (14) I feel like that number says something about me, and it’s not polite. Anyway, decisions are being weighed regarding candy vs. scouting. This is particularly the case for Leon and Nemona, as PokeFairs who can justify it. I love Olympia’s kit, and I love Drasna broadly, so I am admittedly Very Tempted to invest in them too. But we’ll see. This is a fairly light month and I have...quite a lot saved after candying literally everything from last month. But expect at least 4 to be used, either on PokeFairs when I stop after general tracks, or on general pool pairs while I invest in higher odds of powerups and also maybe a 3/5 Colress please game I am being so good.

Strike (4) No new strikers. Candy is accounted for, with 2 to Rose and one each to Archie and Maxie. I am debating not giving them to anyone, though. We’ll see. The main reason to use anything for Rose is the improvement to sync and general damage thanks to Hit the Gas, but I’m not convinced yet. Archie and Maxie are the eternal “Could reset weather one time” and “SEUN each action under weather is enticing though.” Neither feels strictly necessary.

Tech (4) If I invest these, which is a terribly difficult decision, I think what I’d aim for is 2 to SS Steven for full grid at last, 1 to SS Hau because holy crap does he not do enough at 2/5, and 1 to SS N because I have a problem. That’s if I choose to invest all of these. The only one I feel really strongly about is SS Hau, but I also acknowledge I’d want to EX him to get those sync benefits for re-applying Terrain, and our EX situation is dire, so I’m not fully sold.

Support (3) My kingdom for support candy... Anyway, V!Lorelei and C!Red are the only two scoutable pairs I don’t have at 3/5. My bigger problem is just...Rosa. Cheren. The Master BP pairs given how rare the Master tickets are. I intend to give one to Lorelei, but the rest I’ll conserve for Anniversary.

fantasy booking/meta post-nj cup 2023;

on SANADA;

following his big njcup win, i would love to see sanada get strapped with the belt. it's a similar beat to okada, 2016 naito (sanada's debut!!), EVIL (*sighs in missed opportunities*), and ospreay. if njpw is going all-in on SANADA, and they should considering he's taken up the niche that was once kota's, they need to give him legitimacy.

i think we can foresee a reign with a lot of changeover, but i'd like for SANADA to have at least a handful of solid defences against challengers -- he has a great set of rivals now that he's in the same "league" as them: okada, ZSJ (!!!!!!!!!), naito, EVIL (*sighs in future missed opportunities*), pwnoah's soya, shingo, and ospreay (!!)

with taichi by his side, they might even tease a short tag team run too. dangerous skulls, let's goo

all in all, a great showing from sana-yan and he has a lot to show.

on OKADA & chaos;

okada's due for a changeup and i think that his recent aggression with his own stablemates and looking to milf ace tanahashi could be interesting to play into, especially since chaos hasn't been a unit lately. robbie's quiet defection into tmdk has had no effect on his stablemates, which is always kind of disappointing but at this point; what is chaos? chaos during the nakamura leadership felt more cohesive, just a couple of lads doing their thing, but since okada has moved onto greener pastures, the group as a whole feels aimless in the story they're telling together.

people might dislike bullet club drama but at least the players are trying to make a script that involves everyone. :/ chaos as of late only get together to film a ytr dvd

which is why okada's tag match against bishamon was super cool! he went all heelish on them to the point where it's like -- kazu, those are your stablemates, mate, you have to see them later after the match -- if they pull the trigger on okada breaking up chaos (instead of another chaos defection) or his stablemates worrying about his recent attitude change and challenging him, that would be a fresh take on a severely underdeveloped stable as of late

on STRONG STYLE (ren, szk, despy);

what did they do to my beautiful boy desperado.......... i hate cheap mask removal spots, especially with despy. it just pains me this is where he is at when he's elevated the jr.'s scene while hiromu was injured for so long. now that he's down in the muck with h.o.t. on the undercard, that signals his contract might be a freelancer's (see also suzuki).

i am torn because despy is a very versatile wrestler and he will be a crowd fave for this year's wrestle peter pan, but i hate that his home promotion in njpw didn't give him the big win over hiromu. (bosj 27 kicked ass btw so if you haven't seen it, i strongly recommend thistle's watch guide here.) maybe he's taking matters into his own hands and raising his value in other promotions, but it saddens me that they'd resort to unmasking him like that when bosj 27's unmasking scene was story-laden and signified a big moment.

SHO is a funny lad and all but this felt such a disservice to have h.o.t. beat down ren and despy. what happened to their tag partners, taguchi and yano? where did they escape to? this is the issue i have with njpw face factions such as hontai. if they're faces, shouldn't they try to help ren and despy?

ren has the opposite throughline to shota and i'm sensing some darker edge to him which has got me fantasy booking like crazy. if the honorable fighter style of his mentor, shibata, didn't work, why not fall into the darker desires to finally defeat h.o.t.?

with suzuki-san and despy supposedly out of new japan's main scene for the time being, it sure would be interesting if ren went to the other fighter with ties to shibata who isn't afraid to get sadistic to win... aka give me the shibata-kenta lovechild ren narita. son of strong style gone dark with KENTA as his new influence. KENTA's been talking on about how ren is shibata's clone, so it wouldn't be a stretch to give ren backup just to spite shibata and also because elp hates h.o.t.

ren, elp, and KENTA vs h.o.t. doesn't sound too bad, depending on how bullet club is going to fracture following debbie-chan's loss this tournament. the never trios have gone down in quality, so adding KENTA's star power and elp's surge of popularity could elevate the trios scene, as well as give ren some more charisma with the crowd that shota is surfing on.

i think suzuki is going over KENTA in their upcoming match. suzuki wants to work more in the US and him holding the strong belt is good branding for the njpw strong show.

on TAICHI & J5G;

taichi, my beloved

nah, nah, i'll do a more focused meta on the breakdown of taichi's character someday but i'll say that this era of "kingmaker taichi" is a logical progression of his character. while j5g has no leader (based communist stable lmao), it's clear that the "emotional leader" is taichi.

i expect to see more of douki and kanemaru in bosj, and of course, for SANADA to be heavily protected (as he should! that's their ace!) in upcoming matches. while i will weep with a heavy heart at our holy emperor might be staring up at the house lights like TAKA, he has a "kenta kobashi"-lite underdog grit that i think that his losses only further develop his character and won't cool him off that easy. his backstage promos are witty, and the moments where he heavily blames himself for not being up to the standard of his partnering ace (milano, ZSJ, and hopefully sana-yan) signify the character's hardships. he also gets the crowd going hot when he's doing his mid-to-late match fire ups. idk if the man behind taichi just binge-watched a lot of classic ajpw and king's road but i am all for it. he's got kingston-like vibes but instead of addressing his enemies, he's addressing his friends.

i don't expect j5g to suddenly dominate the scene, but i hope we get a kobashi type payoff for taichi and douki like we just had with sana-yan.

on TMDK;

this pains me to say but imo tmdk are the least interesting active stable as a whole. individually, zsj + fujita is great, but the way that tmdk formed its group feels rushed and out of the blue to the majority of the crowd who didn't know the wrestlers had connections from way back. i know those two other dudes are zack's best pub lads but comparing them to the the presentation of early united empire, they don't stand out for me much. robbie relocating to tmdk might be a good move since chaos is... chaos... however, just like zack's induction in the group, i wish their major beats wasn't skipped or spedrun.

i guess they'll say that zack's lads talked with robbie at tamashii in australia? the others should try to find something to grip onto outside of relying on zsj's popularity and his current storyline with fujita vs the spurned young lions. i hope they can turn it around. i don't really enjoy eagles as a performer and i'm holding on for the payoff to the zsj story, but without an interesting storyline, this is low on my priorities. perhaps a full faction vs faction feud can spice up tmdk outside of shota vs zack for the tv belt.

on UE;

aussie open are perfect lads!! njcup was their place to shine, and they did rightfully so. i adore big men such as dunky, the stan hansen comparisons are appropriate, and kyle's little brother vibes mesh well with the cockiness of the UE. hoping they get a good rivalry with bishamon. while i'm not high on catch 22, i love cobb, o-khan, and henare's trios bond. tbh i am not as invested in ospreay's journey vs kenny, but i am excited for potential matchups with sanada, taichi, and okada.

on BOSJ :(;

as pointed out earlier, despy is out. :(

if hiromu's goal, and njpw's goal, is to elevate the jr.'s scene as much as liger did back in the day, they can't have hiromu dominating this field so much. liger's time felt amazing because they built up great rivals for him (naoki sano, wild pegasus).

the parallels with okada are fine and all but because njpw devalued so many of hiromu's rivals, i'm not as invested in the scene anymore, which is wild since the jr.'s scene is what made me subscribe in the first place.

the most i can hope for is douki to advance far and for new fresh blood to join this year's tourney.

on BULLET CLUB;

i am so glad debbie-chan lost because this added pressure to the angle is what they needed to differentiate it from previous power struggle storylines. before, it was leader vs leader or mini factions within bullet club duking it out with each other, but now this feels more like an ideology of who and what bullet club should be and aspire to do.

as unhelpful as chase is with his "both sides have a point" schtick, elp's focus on bullet club and finlay's focus on bullet club will determine the post-jay white era. i have mentioned it in previous posts but wishing for jay white to return won't help to revitalize the club as a whole. bullet club merch moved because the leader was getting belts and wins, and jay advocated for himself a lot. cheating as well, same with breaking the pace, and cooling off the crowd. all of these are great and they work for jay.

but people seem to have recency bias. jay wasn't universally respected or beloved when he positioned himself as the new leader. a lot of people hated him because he wasn't kenny omega, the best bout machine workhorse. we're seeing it again with finlay.

i think gedo knows that recreating jay will never get finlay over. he's harkening back to the workhorse heel like late aj styles and heavyweight kenny omega. i think that's the best foot forward in a post-jay vacuum.

i flung this idea around before but i would not be opposed to finlay cleaning house and replacing who he thinks are "soft" with the bc rogue army at tamashii. they are fierce and vicious. not only are they based in australia, making it easier to bring them, maybe ace austin and chris bey will be in this upcoming bosj, making it a numbers game between those who side with elp and those who side with finlay.

on ELP;

i love this cheeky little jevil (jester/devil) and unlike the popular takes, i don't want him to go pure babyface. i know he can, but he shines the most as a smarmy tweener-heel who loves derailing the match. only he can pull off his petty tactics without getting "go home" chants from the crowd.

if not in bc proper, it wouldn't hurt to put him in more tweener or other heel factions. i know for sure i do not want him in lij, his beef with shingo works best as it is, and chaos is dead in the water. with how njpw strong is being remade, and my unbidden bias for the filthmeister, i'm going to throw a curveball and fantasize about a team filthy!elp. team filthy is small enough for elp to have a bigger spotlight and also raise the brand of strong to the audience. also i really like tom lawlor and want to see him and royce more in japan lmao

on SAKURA GENESIS 2023;

bishamon vs ao: gonna be a banger

hiromu vs eagles: ngl, if they don't amp up the story, it'll be a forgettable fued. while it'll be no doubt, flashy af, if it doesn't rejuvenate a "lolhiromuwins" scene, the jr.'s are kind of bland. i actually thought lio rush was a perfect foil to hiromu as a rival b (with despy being rival a), and he'd be sorely missed. a draw between the two would have been very rare but also very awesome. others have brought up KUSHIDA to challenge hiromu because i think it'll be a hiromu win at skr gen 2023, but i think if they want to move the jr.'s forward, they're going to have to bring in new beats to old rivalries, or new rivals altogether. i don't think eagles has it in yet, but i am always looking forward to be proven wrong, so i hope the build to this is good for both wrestlers.

okada vs sanada; ngl their feuds have not been up to par with sana-yan's previous persona, but if njpw keeps these matches shorter, this okada vs sanada could really be truly worthy of moty. i personally would love to see sanada winning, with more borrowed new moves added to his set, but i won't be surprised if okada goes over. i'll keep a close eye on both competitors because now this match up finally has a dramatic gravitas.

🦙 (llama) give us a list of your favourite Minecraft mobs! Why are these ones specifically Your Little Guys? Ironically, love the Llamas but thats probably because I love llamas irl as well. Love how we can put little carpets on them and dress them up and make them into the most fancy of lads! Wish we could dress other mobs like that. Axolotls, again same reason I love them irl as well and I have a small collection of build-a-bear lotties! Warden, big, strong, husband material. He's soooooo mysterious and can kill me by screaming Very Loud which 10/10 would die again. I will forever mourn the loss of the glare. I miss him every day. OH and I actually like the Wandering Trader. He's my buddy, he's my pal, I made him my husband in one world, worst trades on the Overworld.

🌻(sunflower) what are your favourite biomes? Furthermore which biome feels most like home to you (might not even be your fave!). If you could add new biomes to the game what would they be?

OOOOOh. Okay so-

Flower Forests - Theres flowers, there's forest, there's cute bunnies, and it's super super pretty

Meadow - once again, flowers everywhere but meadows just have this detatched feeling seperate from all other biomes thats just so isolating and makes you really think about how vast everything is

Warped Forest - blue/turquoise mushroom trees go brrrrrr

Lush Caves - there's literally magic in these caves I swear to god

Giant Tree Taiga - a new entry but I've really been appreciating spruce lately

Biomes that most feel like home to me are dark oak forests (first ever minecraft world, my little cobblestone shack was in a tiny pond in the middle of the forest) and swamps (mine and my brother's bases are set in a swamp and the amount of time I've spent there is A Lot).

Biomes I would add-

Ice Caves- just c'mon Ice Caves would fuck hard. We have dripstone all you'd need to do is make it look like ice and slap some ice in a cave and be like boom ice cave

Lush Forest - azalea forests that spawn with moss and clay like a surface lush cave almost

Rose/Peony/Lilac Plains - sunflower plains exist why not these?

Mega Deep Ocean - give us fucked up sea life!!! I want the horrors!!!

Crystal Caves - give us some different geodes!!! give me shiny rocks I wish to Eat Them.

🕰 (clock) what version of Minecraft do you remember playing first? What has been your favourite update? If you could make an update what would it be?

I first played uhhhh 1.13 I think it was? Update Aquatic since bedrock was my first chance to own the game on my own console/device since I had to share the old pc we had with my brother. But I remember me and my brother having game night when I'd sit at the desk waaaay back with Alpha when he used to play.

My favourite update is defo Nether Update. A common answer and pretty basic but I am gentle hold the Piglins and the amount of blocks added was astounding! 1.18 is a close second but I miss the old generation a lot more than I enjoy the new sometimes. I fuckin love the caves though!

As for an update hmmm... I'd either love to do an End Update or a Second Update That Changes the World which would update old biomes and add some new interesting ones... like more cave biomes... please Mojang... more cave biomes. I like the three we have but please........... m o r e. Imagine: ice caves, fungal caves, crystal caves, volcanic caves, better mineshafts, proper ocean caves...... imagine the possibilities!!!

‘You expect him to go on the road with nobodies?’ YES, anon, that is largely the point of support acts. They are smaller artists and bands, going on tour with a bigger artist or band in order to increase their visibility and up their profile with a view to at some point booking their own headline tour. Now, it doesn’t always work like that. Support acts sometimes have already done their own small venue tour, but in playing support for a larger band or artist at a larger venue, they’re able to increase the number of people they’re playing to and therefore increase the possibility of their own following growing. I am begging people to stop thinking of gigs as mini festivals where you pay money for a ticket to see two or three bands and that those bands therefore need to all be at a similar level of ‘fame’ for want of a better word (genuinely I think this is the way some people view Louis’ shows a) because he’s been vocal about supporting smaller bands and b) because of him curating acts for AFHF) and instead think of gigs as the chance to see your fave perform whilst also potentially discovering a new-to-you band or artist whose music you might want to buy etc.

I would hope for SOME name recognition. I understand the point about people expecting mini festivals and I want to be clear I am not expecting that. However, in this day and age, it’s completely normal to expect an opener of a major world tour to come with some weight…a viral song/popular single. Something!!!

Louis’s status deserves to have someone better than a Lad or Garage Band. I would also like to be clear there is nothing WRONG with being a Lad or Garage Band, I just want an expanded potential audience for Louis.

But at this point it could literally be any Not-Male person off the street and I would appreciate it.

I love love loved 'foget-me-nots' 🥰 I was initially pissed off by him because nobody should toss out equipments worth 1000's of dollars down the ocean let alone a whole human being and try to make up for it with shitty flowers. He did save y/n from being sa'ed and/or killed by that man and became super sweet once he lost his memory. Domestic yoongi was so fluffy and sweet - I want one for myself 🥺♥️ The fight broke my heart and I wanted y/n to not give in easily when they reunited but yeah, a less tumultuous ending fit better. It's a full series, I just lost my inspiration to write because I wasn't really getting a ton of feedback on my work so I had to put my writing on hiatus sadly. Oh on some level for sure, my post is not intended to be some stirring defense of the gambling instinct - why people like these kind of systems is its own form of a problematic fave. The top level post was the idea that some "system" from on top would wipe out the drive for gambling games, like if only game designers could be allowed by Late Stage Capitalism to change the model that players would be freed from the shackles of gacha or microtransaction models. That these games only come about because of greed on the side of the developers. Such is not the case because (some) players actively prefer these models, every system will "invent" those games (outside of active government censorship of game designers ofc, a separate topic), so they aren't a product of those systems. Not necessarily saying it is good! As I mention in the tags, I also am sympathetic to the hypothetical of just banning gambling (in practice idk ethics government power effectiveness yadda yadda)

However, I would never be so ~pedestrian~ as to make only such a simple observation (how dare you accuse of me of such! How dare!! ^_^) Because games-as-service, gacha, etc, are crucially different from actual sports gambling in that you can never make money, they are consumption all the way down. Which changes how they function quite radically - because most players of these games aren't, in fact, whales suckered in by ~the system~ or anything. The game is a roleplay of gambling just like a first person shooter is a roleplay of violence. And roleplaying something that would be awful in real life can in fact be quite fun - a foundational principle for so many games and/or sexual preferences. Almost all gacha games, and in particular the popular ones, give players plentiful free resources, most players freely "gamble" with that and spend nothing or little, and what they do spend is often less "one more roll" and more "yeah I have been enjoying this game that is free, sure lets buy the cute hat happy to support the devs". It seriously is the majority by large margins!

(A good supporting point is that many games are in fact roleplay or illusions like this. You trick the player into thinking they are "getting stronger" when ofc it is just number-go-up and the enemy number also is going up, you make them think they are becoming "skilled" by learning prepackaged easy tricks you held back from telling them until the right moment, and so on. The idea that "I gambled for a character and got them - earned them one might say - that is more fun than me just being handed the character" is not at all strange from that framework)

Add on to that the free-to-try and "pay as you go" benefits outlined in the first post, and you better see the games as a model of play as much as a model of finance. For these players, they are better off than they were before - probably paying less for a game, and paying in a way they prefer over the World of Warcraft model. There isn't a victim like in sports gambling.

(And even then, as much I am far harsher on this new wave of phone apps taxing the foolish due to its real money stakes, I recognize there are many, many people who go Las Vegas, take out a 100 bucks with the lads, and have a great time playing poker and experiencing the illusion of possibly Winning Big. Great value purchase compared to concert tickets or something. Even with money gambling there is in fact value being generated.)

Now ofc that doesn't mean there aren't the gambling-addicted whales (though they tend to be less prevalent than people think), that doesn't mean games don't also use FOMO, value obfuscation, etc, an that some players don't "crack" sometimes and blow 50 bucks while other players have to resist cracking and that isn't fun for them. I'm not saying it's all roses, or even that they are a net good (the gambling addict players are definitely worse off, maybe they net wipe out the utility to the winners). Just that throwing out the good with the bad is something I tend to see from a lot of people because oh its because Capitalism Bad w/e, which isn't gonna work because for too many players the games are simply good.

To finally add to this, I also don't want to conflate "video game addiction" and "games-as-service addiction". You mention a friend who played Fortnite, and sure, I don't know this person, don't know their story. Fortnite has a ton of microtransaction stuff and those "controlled progression" systems, it is firmly in the "bad" category design wise. But (best I know, I don't play the game) it is mainly for cosmetic stuff and most players don't care about it all that much, compared to climbing rankings and that entire system. You don't need any gambling at all to get someone addicted to Starcraft Tournaments, or grinding League of Legends, or blowing 200 dollars on a slightly optimized Magic the Gathering decks for tournaments. I am absolutely open to the Haidtian "technology is inducing unhealthy behaviors" argument, maybe video games getting better is bad for us! But I don't think the financial models for the games are a huge part of that for most people, vs digital engagement more broadly.

if we lived in a socialist society, phone games would be better
