hey. can people please stop parroting "stan only regained his memory because it's a disney show" like it's an objective fact and somehow a storytelling flaw? because that's reductionist and straight up untrue. stan regaining his memory is not a random deus ex machina, it's clearly established earlier in the season that the memory gun isn't permanent via mcgucket's storyline. as soon as mcgucket watches the tapes in society of the blind eye, he begins to gradually heal and regain his memories. it makes perfect sense that mabel's scrapbook (and in journal three, stan and ford's old home movies) would function the same way for stan.
realistically, stan probably wouldn't have remembered his entire life in the span of a week, but his recovery is obviously being condensed for the sake of pacing. there's a ton of awesome fanworks based on the idea that he's still recovering new memories long after the end of the show, particularly from the darkest period of his life when he was homeless and estranged from his family. but that's not relevant to the finale. what matters for the show's purposes is that stan remembers the events of the past summer, so that his goodbye with dipper and mabel at the end of the episode holds dramatic weight. because THAT'S HOW YOU WRITE A STORY.
#this may or may not have been brought on by the gt live stream#“stan regains his memory because god forbid a story have stakes” THAT'S NOT WHAT STAKES MEAN???#the worst possible outcome does not have to take place in order for a story to “have stakes”. it just needs to be a possibility#THE WORLD ALMOST ENDED#there's your stakes#every time someone says that the scrapbook jogging his memory was a random deus ex machina i want to scream#IS MCGUCKET A JOKE TO YOU???#quick question do you understand the concept of narrative precedent. do you know what set ups and payoffs are.#you can tell i am very calm about this and not at all infuriated#gravity falls#gf#gravity falls spoilers#weirdmageddon#stan pines#stanley pines#grunkle stan#fiddleford mcgucket#society of the blind eye#gt live#being vague posted about lol

Miss Clara’s Charmed Jewelry and Pets ~ 4 (GT)
(( Read from the beginning ))
Synopsis: While looking for a place to rest on her aimless journey, Valentina comes across the cottage of Miss Clara, who welcomes fairy guests with open arms.
Characters belong to @pr-fae <3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4 ~ The Market It wasn’t Valentina’s intention to scan the room for a possible escape route, but that was what her eyes did anyway as she changed clothes behind the cover of a massive, propped-up book on the table. Silky had been kind enough to lend her spare clothes she had been traveling with: “If you want to get out of that frilly gown, I’ve got some outfits that are less… scratchy.” As Valentina slid her arms into the sleeves of the borrowed blouse, she felt the absence of her wings. She always did, when she changed clothes. And now, the shortness of her hair was just as noticeable when she pulled the blouse down over her head and expected to pull her long locks through too. You look much cuter these days. She swallowed a sob and forced Edward’s voice from her mind. At least her hair would grow back. The more she thought about him and Elaine, the more certain she felt she’d end up in their clutches again. For all she knew, Silky and Jaune had taken her in hopes they would soon see reward posters.
She could hear them murmuring to each other across the room. It was a task and a half not to flinch every time she heard Jaune’s voice rise even the slightest bit. Perhaps the offered clothes provided them the opportunity to scheme their next move in private—or maybe they’re perfectly civil people, now calm down, Valentina! Bracing herself, she stepped out from behind the book. The inn room was modest, but clean and cozy-looking. The criss-cross paned windows were curtained with green velvet, and the bedspread was a matching shade. Her eyes locked on the bed. Jaune sat at the edge, and Silky was perched in his cupped hands as they spoke. She seemed rather upset, and he was stroking her hair with his thumb. Something in Valentina felt sickened at the thought he was petting her, but the longer she looked, it appeared less like petting and more like a lover’s comfort. That was certainly not something Valentina had expected to witness any time soon. But then again, they were in Camveil, and Silky claimed fairies were safe here. If only that were easy to believe, after everything Valentina had experienced. Valentina cleared her throat and tried to hold her ground when both sets of eyes fixed on her. Silky straightened up, visibly composing her harried expression. She tucked back her long sheet of black hair over her shoulders and smiled. “Now that’s much better,” Silky said. Jaune stood from the bed, and Valentina fought the urge to run and hide behind the book as he approached with Silky in hand. “Are you sure you’re not injured?” Jaune asked, laying his hand down to allow Silky to step onto the table. His voice was hushed, but it still sent a chill down Valentina’s spine. She nodded wordlessly in reply. “Don’t lie,” Silky said, striding over to circle around her with crossed arms. “I can see those iron burns.” “They’ll f-fade by tomorrow,” Valentina stammered. They always do. Silky came back around to face her skeptically. “Well, in any case, that collar needs to come off. I can feel the iron oozing from it.” “You can’t,” Valentina blurted, taking a swift step back. “You’ll hurt yourself—the clasp is iron!” “Well, I may not be able to take it off, but…” Silky planted her hands on her hips and looked up at Jaune. “No.” Valentina’s voice came out as a breathless squeak. She shuffled further back, ready to bolt if Jaune reached for her. To her surprise, he leaned away slightly, eyebrows knitting with pity. Silky gave her a strange, alarmed look. “Hey, I understand humans aren’t your favorite, but Jaune’s one of the good ones, trust me. He won’t hurt you. He carried you all the way here into Camveil without getting a scratch on you, didn’t he?” As if I’d had much of a choice in the matter. Valentina clenched her jaw and shook her head. “Mon coeur,” Jaune said in a quiet voice to Silky. “Go easy on her. If she isn’t ready for me to go near the collar, we can’t force her.” “But don’t you want to be able to do magic again,” Silky insisted to Valentina. With a flinch, Valentina looked down at the table. Being magic-less had become such a norm the past months, it hadn’t truly hit her that the collar was the last piece of iron tying her down. Not a cage nor a chain in sight. Perhaps it would be worth the risk to allow those large fingertips near her. She drew in a shuddering breath. “Fine.” Jaune frowned at her, and she tried not to shiver under the weight of his full attention. “Are you sure?” he asked, then gave a pointed nod toward Silky. “No one is forcing you.” Valentina nodded, but the moment his massive hand inched toward her, she jumped back and nearly toppled into the book. Inexplicable tears welled up in her eyes. She had never been so jumpy before. Jaune had paused to eye her worriedly, and that was what convinced her to turn around, allowing him direct access to the clasp of the collar. She reached up to sweep her hair out of the way, only to touch empty air and remember its new length. The tears leaked out. Silky came around to stand in front of her, reaching for her her. “Relax,” Silky soothed, rubbing slow circles on the backs of Valentina’s hands. “I trust him with my life—and yours too.” A choked whimper caught in Valentina’s throat when she felt the pressure of giant fingertips at the back of her neck. She thought her heart might burst. Squeezing her eyes shut, she clutched Silky’s hands tighter. As Juan struggled with the minuscule clasp, Valentina nearly changed her mind. But then, the pressure vanished, along with the weight of the collar around her neck. She took what felt like her first full breath in months. The breath hitched into a soft sob. “There you go,” Silky said, pulling her into an embrace while Jaune set the collar on the far side of the table. “That’s better, isn’t it?” Valentina pulled away and gave a nod, releasing Silky’s hands to swipe away the tears that were still streaming down her face. It was then she decided that perhaps this wasn’t an act. If they meant to keep her or sell her, there was no benefit in removing her collar. Besides gaining my trust, a thought whispered at the back of her mind. “Are you ready to tell us your name?” Silky asked. She swallowed thickly. “Valentina.” Neither Edward nor Elaine had ever asked for her name. She was always “the fairy.” Or “it.” Juane’s chair scraped against the floor as he brought himself closer to the table. “Can you tell us what happened to you, Valentina?” he asked in his rumbling voice. “How did you end up with… with them?” When she turned her eyes away from him, she could practically hear her mother’s voice scolding her for being irredeemably rude while someone was talking to her. Still, she looked only at Silky when she told her tale. Her voice shook at times, and she had to pause and gather herself, but she told everything them about Clara, the cages, the market. And the buyers. “And then a crow swooped from the sky and attacked Elaine,” Valentina said with a pitiful attempt at a smile for Silky. “I’ve been around iron so long, I didn’t even recognize magic when it was right in front of me. Now that I’ve gotten away… oh.” Another sob shook her chest as she brought a hand over her mouth. “What is it?” Jaune asked, hunching closer and making her flinch. “My… my wings,” she hiccupped. “Elaine still has them.” Juane and Silky exchanged a look. “Well, if you point us in the right direction…” Silky said. “No,” Valentina said with a small shake of her head. “That’s too dangerous. If they see you, they might find me again. And besides… what could I do with severed wings, anyway?” “Keep them off that awful woman’s wrist, for one thing,” Silky grumbled. It tore Valentina’s heart to pieces to say, “No, just… just let them go.” Desperate for a change of subject, she bit her lip and looked between the two of them. “So, what are you going to do with me?” Jaune chuckled softly. “You make it sound like we plan to hold you prisoner.” Valentina pursed her lips, wondering if it was safe to admit that was exactly what she was thinking. But he went on, “Silky and I are sure her village would be happy to take you in.” True freedom was gone, and it was never coming back—not without her wings. But living among fairies was worlds better than the hell she had gone through. “What we were discussing, though,” Silky said in a sharper tone, “is that we need to stop Miss Clara.” Valentina stiffied. “How?” “Put her out of business. Get rid of her iron. Free her other captives, I don’t know, something.” Silky paced in front of her, then paused to stare at her intensely. “Do you know where she lives?” “I… The cage was covered when she took me into the market. I don’t know which direction she went. I wouldn’t know where to start.” Valentina’s voice rose higher with the fear that she was expected to come along on this search. “What about the stall, then?” Jaune asked. Her heart skipped a beat. “Near the north gate. She has a sign—a big one. But I… I can’t—” “You don’t have to come, of course,” Jaune said, and for the first time, she was almost soothed by his voice. Still, she fiddled with her fingers as she eyed Silky. “You need to be careful around her. I… I know she can’t take your wings, but—” She stopped short and pressed her lips into a thin line, trying not to stare at Silky’s lack of gauzy appendages. “Sorry.” Silky gave an indifferent shrug. “Don’t apologize. It’s my own fault, what happened to my wings. I was flying fast through a known fairy trap field.” Valentina drew in a sharp breath, and her eyes locked on Jaune when he sat back with a guilty expression on his face. Her wide eyes must have been noticeable, because he shook his head. “It wasn’t me,” he said solemnly. “It was my mother, years ago. My parents… they are not fond of the Fae. They set traps all over our land, and Silky got caught. In order to escape, she…” He trailed off in a shudder. Then, to Valentina’s mild alarm, he pushed away from the table, stood up, and walked away. “I cut off my wings,” Silky said plainly. Valentina couldn’t bring herself to look at Jaune the rest of the day. Kind as he appeared, she could not fathom feeling safe anywhere near him now that she knew exactly what sort of a family he had come from.
~ ~ ~
Silky felt awful about leaving Valentina at the inn, but no worse than if they had taken her along. And honestly, Valentina didn’t appear to mind the opportunity for alone time. No doubt her owners had rarely given her a moment’s reprieve. “I hate it here,” Silky grumbled in Jaune’s ear as he walked through the market. “With any luck, we won’t be here very long, mon coeur,” he soothed. The market was sprawling and impressive, but that didn’t change the fact that this sector of it was filled with the same type of humans from Westhelm. The type that did not view the Fae as people, but as vermin at worst and pets at best. As far as they were concerned, Silky was sitting on her owner’s shoulder. But she refused to hide in his pocket. It would be like giving into these people’s nasty attitude, and she was not interested in letting them scare her. Resisting the urge to glare at everyone who passed Jaune, she instead eyed the stalls situated near the north gate. Massive as the market was, Valentina had indeed pointed them in the right direction. Among the other jewelry stalls crowded together, Silky spotted a sign. Miss Clara’s Charmed Jewelry and Pets. Juane paused, pretending to eye the wares of the neighboring stall. “Are you ready?” he asked under his breath. “Yes,” she murmured, venom already dripping into her tone. As he strode right up to the stall, Silky got her first look at Clara. She might have mistaken the woman for kindly if not for the horrific displays across the table. Miss Clara was at work on something—fashioning a pair of sunset-orange wings into an elegant necklace. Silky wanted to vomit. It was all she could do to swallow a mournfully enraged scream at the sight of the other pairs of wings dangling off the little display stands. Clara’s green eyes peeked up from her work, and she flashed a kind smile at Jaune. Whatever welcome statement she had prepared for her customers didn’t make it past her lips when she spotted Silky. “Oh, my,” Clara said with a strangely admiring smile. “Have you lost its collar and cage? You must be quite an accomplished trainer if you’ve been able to keep it under control without iron.” Jaune’s shoulder shivered with anger beneath Silky. “I’m not here for a collar,” he said. Cocking her head, Clara briefly narrowed her eyes at Silky. “Have you come for an exchange, then? I’m sorry, m’dear, but all sales are final. And if you’ve come to buy a companion for your fairy, I’m afraid you’re out of luck. The only two I have in stock are male. And well… wouldn’t want them to breed, now would we?” She gave a tinkling laugh. “Come back next week—I have a female who should be ready by then.” “You sick, twisted bitch,” Silky barked, standing up on Jaune’s shoulder. “You’re that heartless! You don’t even remember the faces of the fairies you’ve mutilated and sold! I was never yours!” Clara stared with wide eyes, looking quite affronted. Then she returned her attention to Jaune with a sharper tone, her sweet mask slipping. “Control your fairy before anyone hears it. It’s bad for business if potential customers think these vermin are untrainable.” “Vermin?” Jaune hissed. “They’re people! And no matter what the laws of this land are, you have no right to do what you’re doing!” He stepped closer, and Clara jumped out of her seat. “Get out,” she snapped. “Before I call the guards.” “No,” Silky fired back. “You’re going to give up your fairies and stop capturing them.” Clara gave a snide laugh. “And why would I do that?” “I have a whole team at my village who would be more than willing to come down and raise hell if you keep torturing and degrading our kind! Believe me, you will regret the moment this sick idea ever popped into your mind.” “The little trespassers are not forced into my home,” Clara said with new and infuriating calm. “It’s only fitting that I make good use of them.” She waved a hand at the jewelry on the table. Jaune lunged forward so quickly, Silky had to crouch to keep from falling. She watched with fierce love for him as he grabbed those awful necklace chains and bracelets and snapped them to pieces, freeing the wings. It hurt her heart to see them flutter to the ground, but it was better than being strung up like baubles. Other humans were watching now, whispering and too afraid to stop Jaune themselves. Silky could feel their eyes as Clara wailed in anger. “No!” Jaune pulled up the bottom of the tablecloth, and Silky gave a cry of disgust at what was hidden underneath. Valentina had warned them—had said how Clara housed her pets for sale. There were two cages, each containing a cowering fairy. Jaune knelt down to open the latches before Clara could intervene. He managed to reach in and scoop one out, but Clara hurried and lunged for the other, trapping him in a fist. The fairy Jaune held began screaming and squirming, while the one Clara held trembled in submission. Jaune was distracted with trying to calm his rescued fairy down, while Clara snatched up one of the cages and shoved the other fairy back inside. She held the cage possessively, clearly too afraid to try and wrestle Jaune’s away from him. “Guards!” she shrieked. “Help, over here!” Silky whirled around on Jaune’s shoulder and saw that armored guards were already making their way purposefully through the crowd to reach the stall. No doubt someone had already alerted them long before Clara called out. Silky huddled closer to his neck. “Run!” she hissed. But the guards were upon them before he could move. “What’s the meaning of this?” one of the guards demanded. Clara pointed. “This man came to destroy my wares and threaten me! Look at the damage he’s done to my livelihood! He still has my merchandise in his grasp!” Jaune backed away. “This is sickening,” he spat. “These are people, not pets to be sold! This can’t possibly be legal.” “It sure as hell can’t,” Silky put in. “She’s the one who should be arrested here!” The first guard sneered at Silky. “You’re kind has no rights in this sector of the market. If you were so disgusted by these business practices, you never should have come here.” He glared at Jaune more seriously. “Return the merchandise at once. We’ll sort out this mess about the broken wares after.” Silky knew Jaune had no intentions of handing over the fairy, but no one was prepared for the fairy to unleash a spell, free of the iron’s clutches. Wingless, he was still able to harness whatever wind magic he had been blessed with. In the blink of an eye, he vanished as if he had become a breeze on the wind itself. “No!” Clara shouted, turning to the guards. “This is unacceptable! You must find it at once!” The other guard shrugged. “I’m afraid hunting down fairies isn’t our business.” Clara stormed around to the other side of the stall, setting the cage in her hands down so roughly that the trapped fairy bumped into the bars and cried out in pain. She glared daggers at Silky, then suddenly turned a softened gaze to the guards. “I know what would be fitting. I’d even be willing to forget about the broken jewelry.” She jutted her chin at Silky. “That one. It’s only fair.” “No,” Silky uttered. Jaune was already reaching up to grab her protectively, but both guards were upon him at once. Crying out, Silky leaped up, only to be grabbed in a crushing grasp. Jaune was wrenched back, and in an instant she was out of his reach. She writhed and screamed while Jaune fought for her. “Give it now!” Clara said. “Before it performs any of that foul magic.” Silky was handed off, and before she could get a fraction through her crow transformation, she was tossed into the empty cage. She was on her feet instantly, rushing for the door, only to have it slam against her. She howled in pain at the brutal iron contact. “Let her go!” Jaune roared as Clara smugly looked down at Silky between the bars. All Silky could do was scream and curse as Jaune was hauled away by the guards.
Jaune only half-listened as the guards shoved him out of the market and warned him that he shouldn’t show his face anymore if he knew what was good for him. How could he listen to any words that came out of their mouths? The only word blaring in his panicked mind was Silky’s name. But even then, he knew he had to avoid arrest, or there would be no getting her back. So he circled the outskirts of the market and found the opposite entrance, taking the long way to the north gate. It took hours, avoiding guards and trying to find his way through the maze of the market. The hours felt more like an agonizing eternity before he found the stall again. Furious tears welled up in his eyes, and he clenched his fists at his sides. The stall was entirely empty, and Clara was nowhere to be found.
The Art Of Heavy: An Interview with BORIS // PUREGRAINAUDIO
This week, two metal titans – Boris of Japan and Amenraof Belgium – embark on a co-headlining tour of Europe. Both are bands known for their intense music and equally intense live shows – albeit in different ways – with a wealth of material behind them and a core of dedicated listeners. Boris celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary last year with the album DEAR, a celebration of all things Boris, and a glorious final statement from the band. Amenra, too, are approaching their second decade as a band, maintaining a steady and consistent creative output through personal turmoil and band member side-projects. Last year’s Mass VI is as emotionally heavy and soul-bearing as any of the project’s works; more than any band, Amenra channel their strength through hardship. With the first date of the tour on the horizon, Takeshi of Boris and Colin H. van Eeckhout of Amenra kindly took the time to answer questions I had for them about their bands’ legacies, creative processes and their relationship with each other.
Full article via Pure Grain Audio.
The marriage between the two bands may seem all too obvious for heavy music listeners; though the bands are not wholly familiar with each other’s music on a personal level, it was evident that both bands had a mutual respect for one another’s art; “Both bands have a vision that is remarkable.” Colin van Eeckhout of Amenra remarks “Boris’ free will is something intriguing to me. They write the music they want to in total freedom,” a mutual respect shared by Boris too, as Takeshi says “Amenra have their own style and idea, I respect what they are doing and am very looking forward to playing with them. It is exciting to see what chemistry between them and Boris is made during the tour.” Eeckhout added “Both bands have a crossover audience, yet bring two worlds within heavy music together. That’s what it is all about for Amenra, bringing people together.”
Boris' DEAR is their twenty-third album and dropped on July 14, 2017 via Sargent House.
Despite a quarter of a century behind them now, Boris show no signs of stopping for reflection; “We won’t slow down for new sound and music at all, that is our main goal.” From drone metal classics like Absolutego (1996) and Feedbacker (2003), to 2005’s shoegaze and noise rock-influenced Pink, to experiments in new genres with albums like New Album and Attention Please in 2011, Boris’ output has always been as varied as it has been prolific. However, the band themselves have never considered these albums so disparate; “I know lots of people are saying Boris have numerous musical styles, but to us all styles are deeply connected at the bottom end.” Whatever sonic territory Boris tread, they have an ability to remain unmistakably ‘Boris’. With the band now standing at 23 studio albums, as well as numerous EPs and live albums, it can be difficult to know where to start, something which the band themselves are well aware of; “We usually don’t look back at what we have done in the past, but also do understand we should maintain our catalog and archive for our fans in order to show them appropriately.” Even though they are an unwaveringly forward-thinking and experimental band, Boris understand the need to preserve their past works and for accessibility to new listeners.
For many, the quintessential setting for Amenra’s music is live, with their music described as bordering on ‘spiritual’ and their shows as entrancing and communal [1], something Amenra acknowledge themselves; “The religious nature of our music has grown from personal experience” Eeckhout explains. Whether the allusions to religious ceremony are intentional or not, “I believe you cannot ‘construct’ a spiritual aspect for other people, I would not know of a blueprint to that in music making…” Amenra’s ‘masses’ can be seen more as a communion for personal introspection and healing. From the accounts of fans, an Amenra show can be as cathartic for them as it is for the band themselves; “The religious nature of our music has grown from personal experience, and outsiders also talking about its “healing” nature, [this] only confirmed what we suspected, or felt ourselves… A lot of people share their testimonies why Amenra means so much to them. Or they come up to us after shows and sometimes have pretty deep conversations about it.”
The cover art for Amenra's Mass VI. The album dropped on October 20, 2017 via Neurot Recordings.
For Amenra, the experience of a live concert is first and foremost something to experience viscerally; “People can really dive into our music or ‘the moment' live, mostly they look into themselves. and let the sonic wave hit them.” Their live spectacle is aided by the usage of projected visuals on-stage; unlike many frontmen, Eeckhout performs with his back to the audience, a move that ultimately directs the focus to the band as a whole and the accompanying images rather than simply the vocalist. For Amenra, each performance is so much more than a ‘rock show’; the imagery and music, as well as each individual member of the band, are of equal importance; “The images are an aid to lose yourself within the moment. They reinforce the music, and make it easier on each member of the crowd, to forget where they are, the concert venue, the stage, the people around you, etc..”
Now approaching their twentieth year as a band, Eeckhout contemplated on how the group has changed over their time together; “It has evolved like all humans evolve in 20 years. Our friendships and lives have grown stronger. Our lives more difficult, we’ve lived through more adversity.” Indeed, while Amenra’s music and performance can be theatrical and ear-splitting, it has always looked inwards to personal hardships for inspiration; this kind of catharsis is paramount to the band’s creative process “…our direction will always be our own lives, and sentiment; our stance and views in, and on, life… We had never set goals, we just did what we felt we had to do, for ourselves and nobody else.” There’s a kind of palpable urgency and frustration in Amenra’s music, a deep and natural rage, their music a vessel through which to channel it. Even with side-projects like Oathbreaker and Wiegedood within the eponymous ‘Church of Ra’, with Amenra the centrepiece in the collective, Eeckhout believes “I think there is no other band than Amenra that discusses as much; the what and why of everything.”
Oh, dear. Stream and hear Boris' DEAR right here.
&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://boris.bandcamp.com/album/dear"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Dear by Boris&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;
While Amenra draws directly from hardship and adversity to create their art, Boris embrace the spirit of improvisation more so than many metal bands. The band has always maintained a spontaneous approach to music writing, evidenced in early pieces like Flood and Feedbacker which slowly evolve across repeating motifs and riffs; “Basically, we don’t write songs, just go into the studio and jam together, then we have some idea and that will lead us to a specific direction.” Even when preconceived ideas are brought into the mix, the band enjoy leaving the songwriting process open to whatever comes to them; “I wouldn’t rule out any strategy. Whatever the case the song will lead us where we should go.” Understandable, when one considers the many sonic faces Boris have worn over the years.
Boris’ improvisational nature is becoming more and more reflected in their live performances, too; “All songs are living things, they will show us very different mood and sound whenever we play them live. Our songs have undescriptive silence, tempo and mood, so we will add another texture every time.” Between this, their prolific catalog and genre experimentation, Boris continue their tradition unpredictable and free-spirited creation twenty-five years deep into their career, and clearly have no plans to stop working any time soon; “I can’t thank enough to our fans and their endless support is driving force of the band, I really appreciate it. Boris are feeling we have something like responsibility to our fans and that feeling is getting way stronger than before.”
Amenra and Boris began their co-headlining tour of Europe on February 14th starting in Bristol (UK) through to Haarlem (Netherlands) on March 4th.
old man
travis’s shitty moments turn even shitter after seeing his dad at the bar, gts all around!!
“You alright, darlin’?”
Travis glanced up from his fist to the bartender as she eyed him. She was an older lady with make-up way too heavy for her age, and she wore a sympathetic expression. He wasn’t exactly sober, but in compassion to the rest of the drunk idiots there, she seemed to have actually taken pity on him.
“Not so much, but that’s nothing another hit can’t fix,” he sighed, tapping against the glass and wincing.
“Sure thing, but...you might wanna think about cleaning up those hands, sweetie. Not that I suspect anything, it’s just a bit odd looking, that’s all,” she shrugged.
Travis’s eyes darted back down to his bloodied knuckles. So maybe beating the shit out of Whitney’s ex wasn’t the best thing to celebrate with a drink. In fact, celebrate wasn’t the right word. It was a kind of mourning, in a way. If anything were to bring death to their relationship, this was it. All the little things like Miami, the bathroom, Molly, the karaoke video, and nude’s being leaked all seemed to lead to this one particular downfall.
“Yeah, well...the prick deserved it. It’s kind of like a badge of honor at this point,” Travis shrugged, tossing back his refill as if it were water. And it was true. He’d gotten an incoming of texts: Molly, Dylan, Philip, Meredith. All of them asked a mix of if he’d seen the photos, what was going on, if was Whitney okay. He didn’t know, though, not until it was too late. He’d caught enough of the live-stream to send out a rare, angry tweet to Woody, one that he was sure his publicist would be on his ass for later. The moment that was brought up and laughed at over Instagram, something snapped. It was personal from that point on. He knew it may have been stupid or even hypocritical considering the countless times he’d hurt Whitney himself, but something about driving to his place and watching Woody wincing against each blow directed towards his face was worth it. Just because he’d fucked with her head didn’t mean anyone else should’ve had the right or gotten pleasure from it. Maybe that’s what felt so good about seeing Woody’s wrecked face and walking away with bloodied hands. It was an eye for an eye.
“Honey,” she sighed as he tapped it once more. “Are you sure you don’t wanna slow down? I don’t want you doing anything else too stupid.”
“Carla,” he said, catching sight of her name tag, “I trust you. Trust me back, yeah? There’ll be a good tip in it for ya.”
She hesitated briefly, but ended up filling his cup to the brim once more. “Just...be careful, hon. If not for you, for me.”
He opened his mouth to reply to her, maybe even thank her for being over the top nice when him of all people didn’t deserve it, but a roar of laughter from the other end of the bar caught his attention. It was familiar, and it actually made him tense up. It was enough to feel like every inch of hair on his body was standing up straight. He carefully turned his head to see the small group of men who appeared to be in their 60′s or 70′s, all seemingly piss-drunk. He wouldn’t have thought much of it if it weren’t for the one in the middle, arms flailing about as he seemed to tell some story with dramatic flair. Must’ve been where he got it from.
“Fuck,” he sighed, getting to his feet and digging into his pocket to slide a hundred dollar bill towards Carla.
“Baby, you didn’t even finish your refill. This is too much.”
He licked his lips before grabbing the glass and finishing it off, giving her a small nod as he placed it back on his napkin.
“S’for being a decent person. God knows we could use more of those in the world,” he responded, his voice gravelly. He needed to get the fuck out of there. He was all prepared to, reaching down to button up his coat, the pound of his boots echoing as he walked to the entrance.
“Travis?”
The voice had him skip to a stop, and he felt as if he were just grabbed by a creature in a haunted house.
“Travis! My boy! Fellas, that’s my fuckin’ son right there! In a bar of all places. The fucking irony, eh? Really taking after his old man,” he heard his father’s chatter, his eyes squeezing shut as they all roared with laughter again. He couldn’t leave now, not without saying something. He hesitantly turned around, feeling Carla’s protective stare on him as he walked towards the oldies gang and stopped about a foot away from.
“Well son, don’t you think it’s rude to not stop to say hello? Especially to your father, of all people.”
“Not sure if the alcohol has blurred your eyesight, but I was just leaving, dad,” he replied, his tone curt. It definitely caused a stir from the other older guys, an awkward hush falling among the group.
“Big mouth you’ve got there, boy. You certainly didn’t get it from your mother, that’s for sure. Another gift from old pops, huh?” he prodded once again with a chorus of snickers from his goons.
“How about you keep mum’s name out of your mouth?” Travis replied. If there was sore subject, it was that. His mom practically raised him and his siblings on her own, and even though she’d moved on, it still wasn’t fair. “Besides, you never stuck it out long enough to really know her, did you?”
“You’ve got a lot of nerve,” his father drawled, eyes going from a unfocused blur to a narrow, faltering glare. Strangely enough, it was accompanied by a deep smirk, once that he wished he could just smack off of his face. He was sure the drinks were the cause of that. “You should be grateful I decided to stick it out with that bitch long enough for you to be alive. Count your lucky fucking stars.”
He didn’t want to let this rattle him, despite feeling the way his fists were starting to tremble at his sides. “Classy as ever, dad, but you’re not exactly hot shit yourself. She’s moved on, and you’re here in a random bar. If you think any of us should feel grateful towards you, then I guess it’s not just liver damage you’ve got going on. It’s starting to effect your brain, too.”
The comment promoted another loud round of laughter from his dad, although his friends didn’t have the same reaction. It was more awkwardness, unsure if they should be laughing along or leaving him be.
“Maybe you’re right, son, but from the looks of it, you’re following right behind me, huh? Almost exactly in my footsteps, and not surprisingly so. I’ve heard your brother’s already managed to fuck up his marriage, and you’re here looking like you just buried a dead body. Probably can’t keep a girl yourself, right?”
“Wrong. My girl, she...” Travis’s voice cut off when he suddenly remembered that, technically, Whitney wasn’t his girl. Not at the moment. His dad didn’t have to know that, though. He didn’t owe him any explanations. “She’s a country singer. A fucking fantastic one, and I care about her enough that you’ll never have the honor of ever getting to meet her in person. Not if I have any say.”
“Well that sounds like a nice, fake, fairytale girl you’ve made up there, son. Let me guess, that song, the ‘Travis’ one is by her and it’s about you, right?”
His silence and the look on his face was the only answer his dad needed, his moment of shock turning into an ugly, cruel cackle.
“It is! Well, fucking hell boy, I should’ve known. Robert can’t make it work, and you leave them high and dry enough to get a song written about you. You’re both your father’s sons. Not sure if I should be proud, I expected as much. Let’s hope your sister isn’t out there selling herself short or swinging around a pole and shoving money in her panties. I’d hate to see another waste of potential.”
In almost a second, Travis had lunged and had his dad’s shirt taken up in his fist. The others were quick to jump in, feeling a pair of arms attempting to tug him away from his dad.
“Hey! It’s fine, let him go,” his dad bellowed, and Travis felt himself being released from the hold that was on him. “You wanna punch me? Go right ahead, boy.” He got uncomfortably close to him, enough so that Travis took in the stench of whisky and cigarettes from his breath. “You better make it a fucking good one, too. You’re a lot of things, but hopefully not a pussy.”
Travis stared at him, heavily breathing before shaking his head.
“You’re not worth the time. You’re not worth shit.”
Despite deserving more, he settled for giving his dad a hefty shove. He didn’t relish in the way he stumbled backwards with a drunken grin. It was all just so stupid and sickening.
“Guess you’re a little bitch, too, huh? Isn’t that right, Travis? Go on, get the fuck out of here.”
He turned to walk away, to just block out the comments, leave everything in the dust and carry on. However, he was met by the presence of two police officers walking through the doors.
“Is there a Travis Simmons here?”
Fuck.
“I, uh, yeah...me. What’s the problem, officer?”
Instantly, he received the ‘you’re under arrest’ spiel and felt a pair of cuffs wrap around his wrists. It was actually pretty impressive how fast they swooped in. No, it wasn’t his first time having something like this happen, but it was the first time he’d actually felt the gut punch of shame. Not for what he did, but for who was observing it. He glanced to Carla, who was almost as horror struck as he was, then reluctantly over to his dad who raised a glass in his direction.
“My kin, ladies and gentleman. He’s getting more similar to me with every passing moment.”
Travis’s eyes squeezed shut, not wanting to watch as he tipped the drink back. He couldn’t help but think about how similar they looked doing it. If he was actually becoming anything like his dad, then that was just the biggest fuck you life could offer him. It was almost torturous when the song over the speakers changed and he recognized Whitney’s voice, singing about the shitty things he’d done. His dad’s chuckling in the background as it played was a punchline to the whole fucking joke. Maybe he deserved it. Maybe all of this was something he’d been asking for. Even so, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this low. He didn’t dare look back, eyes glued to the floor as he was lead to the cop car.
CarGurus: Our Automotive Highlights of 2019
Few could argue that 2019 has been a fascinating year in the world of motoring – but what are your automotive highlights of 2019? We’d love for you to tell us in the comments section below this article, or via the CarGurus Facebook page. To get you started, below our writers have put forward their own automotive highlights of 2019, from pickups to Porsches.
Chris Knapman, Editor, CarGurus UK
Will time show that 2019 was the year the electric car broke through? There’s certainly been no shortage of new products using battery power, from the Porsche Taycan and latest Nissan Leaf to the impossible-to-ignore Tesla Cybertruck.
Combine these new cars with an improving charging infrastructure and you’d expect the tide of public opinion might start showing signs of softening towards EVs. That was certainly the case according to our own research, which revealed that the number of consumers who consider themselves as likely to own an EV in the next five years jumped to 26% in 2019, up from 15% in 2018. This is most likely just the start, too: Who would bet against that number having grown significantly by this time next year?
Back in the world of internal combustion, my honorable mention for 2019 must go to the latest generation of Porsche 911, the 992. Not only does it masterfully update the legendary 911 format for this hi-tech age with its fabulous interior and ultra-sleek exterior, but in terms of performance, the 992 moves even the basic, non-GT or Turbo models firmly into supercar territory. In fact, if I had to narrow down my automotive highlights of 2019 into just one, fleeting moment, it’d be the surreal three-point-something seconds it took our four-wheel drive, PDK-equipped 911 test car to fire from 0-62 mph.
Electric vehicles might be coming, but internal combustion is still more than capable of taking your breath away.
youtube
Megan Hennessey, Editor, CarGurus US
I’m struck by the number of performance wagons and SUVs we saw introduced in 2019. Fans of the Audi S4 Avant rejoiced when the German automaker revealed it was bringing its RS 6 Avant to North America. It packs a 4.0-liter V8 that makes 591 hp and 590 lb-ft, hits 60 mph in about 3 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 189 mph.
Just as exciting was the introduction of the RS Q8, a performance SUV packing the same power as the RS 6 Avant. We had a chance to take a closer look at the 2020 RS Q8 at the 2019 LA Auto Show, and it adds plenty of features aside from the engine, like 23-inch wheels and an RS-specific gloss-black grille.
youtube
And in the EV space, electric trucks took center stage: Bollinger brought us a production-ready version of its B2 electric truck, Tesla unveiled its unique Cybertruck, and Rivian gets closer to its production-ready model of the R1T. But are truck shoppers willing to make the switch from gas-powered to electric? It’s hard to say. In our yearly Truck Sentiment Survey, we found that 70% of shoppers were willing to switch brands, which is good news for these startup truckmakers. However, their high prices may keep shoppers away.
Steve Halloran, Editor, CarGurus US
With one colleague celebrating electric vehicles and another performance wagons and SUVs, I feel obliged to mention one 2019 highlight they didn’t: Ford’s live-streamed debut of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E just before the LA Auto Show. Ford’s decision to put the name and badge of its mighty Mustang on an electric crossover generated controversy, of course, but a pony-equipped vehicle with up to 300 miles of range, usable seating for 5, almost 60 cubic feet of cargo room, and a 0-to-60 time of less than 4 seconds sounds great to me.
But my 2019 highlights came from two automakers CarGurus has found compelling for years, Mazda and Subaru, in the form of strong new versions of proven models. The redesigned 2019 Mazda3 earned rave reviews from almost everyone who drove it, including George Kennedy, and the updated 2019 CX-5, which we sampled in the snow at the end of last year, also earned praise from a wide variety of reviewers.
A new version of our favorite Subaru model also arrived in 2019. We got a chance to drive the 2020 Subaru Outback back in September and enjoyed it quite a bit. The new edition of this wagon/crossover finally offers a turbocharged engine under its hood, which drivers living at high altitudes should particularly appreciate. Our recently published review of the 2020 Outback found it strong from functionality and cost-effectiveness standpoints, which we consider hallmarks of the Subaru brand.
Matt Smith, Editor, CarGurus US
This time of year, everyone’s talking about electrification and progress and the hot new thing. But as anyone with their eyes open can clearly see, 2019 was the year of the throwback.
youtube
First, Chevy resurrected the Blazer as a stylish, sharp, and sexy crossover complete with nearly $1,400 worth of 21-inch tires. Sure, the new 2019 Blazer had its detractors, namely those bemoaning its lack of off-road performance, but I, for one, welcome our new crossover overlords.
youtube
And it’s not as if 2019 didn’t bring us plenty of rugged capability, either. Carrying on with the throwback theme, both Ford and Jeep returned legendary truck nameplates to the market, with the 2019 Ranger and 2020 Gladiator.
youtube
Finally, the highlight of the year for this writer was the long-awaited return of the Toyota Supra. Partnering with BMW gave the new coupe a brilliant Bavarian heart and soul (or engine and chassis, for our more literal readers) to pair with its stunning exterior styling. Sure, the 2020 GR Supra’s interior might feel a bit familiar, and the lack of a manual transmission will cut it off some enthusiasts’ shopping lists, but it’s safe to say that no other car on CarGurus’ 2019 test-drive review roster received as much attention at gas stations, grocery stores, race tracks, or anywhere else we drove it.
Turbo soul lives in the 2018 Volvo XC60
There have been many quirky vehicles in The Garage over the years, but one of the coolest remains the 1984 Volvo 240 Turbo wagon that we owned for a few years during the late Nineties. Officially, the longest of the turbo bricks was called a 245T. Our wagon was the exact spec that fans of the boxy speedster lusted after: A silver wagon with the correct Turbo blackout striping, Euro style grill with inset fog lights, GLT wheels and a manual transmission. It even had the dog gate which swung down from the ceiling to keep Fido in his place. Sadly, we didn’t have a Fido in those days but it was still neat to have it.
That wagon was perhaps the best family vehicle of all time. It could carry 5 adults in comfort. Fold down the rear seats and it would carry a 4×8 sheet of plywood. It looked cool as hell to those who knew and could keep pace with a Fox-body Mustang off the line. While it was a bit too big for an autocross course, the car was a joy to hustle down a winding country road, even when fully loaded.
Back in the day, Volvo used the slogan “Boxy but good” and their sporting varieties became know as Bricks and Turbo Bricks. They weren’t exactly sexy, unless you were turned on by straight lines. Fast forward three decades and our tester, an XC60 T6 R-Design couldn’t be more different. While there are straight accent lines here and there, sensual curves are the order of the day. Those curves do however push up towards muscular rear shoulders, in keeping with the brand’s heritage.
The interior of the old girl left much to be desired, as many of its surfaces were as square as the exterior. Nothing flashy or luxurious here, just black plastic and blue cloth seats in a style that only really excited a Volvo diehard. The interior of the XC60 on the other hand is nothing short of World class. Without seeming too modern, the combination of sensual curves and well chosen finish materials, the Volvo has a definite Scandinavian flair. The machined metal speaker covers are particularly striking.
Techie types will be astounded by the XC60’s incredibly user friendly infotainment system, which is centered around a 9″ centre stack touch display which operates with the fluidity of a smart phone or tablet. It gives users control over a wide range of audio and vehicle settings to tailor the vehicle experience to the individual driver.
The audio system in particular deserves a mention, as it stands out in a segment which is full of serious audio gear. The Volvo Canada media fleet guy enthusiastically pointed out that the Bowers & Wilkins system has different modes, including studio for normal music and concert hall for higher quality music. Most often, these systems seem, to my ears at least, to simply muck around with reverb settings to change the sound in the cabin. The system in the XC60 was painstakingly tuned to replicate the sound in the middle of the renowned Gothenburg Concert Hall, complete with displaying a picture of the place.
To test the system, I directed the system to play music from my bluetooth connected phone rather than the Sirius XM feed. I brought up my Google Play app and chose the Evanescence Fallen album, hit play and cranked the volume. The sound was nothing short of mind blowing. The drums or thunder or whatever the rumble is in Bring me to life, quite literally caused the vehicle to shudder. After that, a bit of vintage Pink Floyd confirmed that the XC60 offers one of the best sound systems on the market.
Back in 2014, I had the opportunity to spend a rather silly 22 hours in Gothenburg, Sweden, home to Volvo with the intention of going for a ride-a-long in the company’s first self driving car. Sadly, it was raining and the vehicle’s sensors could not “see” the markings on the road, which it used to stay in its own lane. Autonomous vehicle technology is moving forward in leaps and bounds and much of the tech that Volvo was working on three years ago is now included in the company’s Pilot Assist system.
Volvo’s tech sheets describe the system as “Semi Autonomous Drive System with Adaptive Cruise Control and Active Lane Keeping Aid”. Adaptive cruise is not a new concept and lane assist type of systems are becoming more common in the marketplace. Some of the systems offered by other manufacturers are clunky at best, disruptive at worst. Where Pilot Assist stands out is in its seamless, unobtrusive operation. Once could quite easily, gasp, look down at their phone, confident in the knowledge that the car is going to do what it is supposed to do.
You may think I have lost my mind with that statement, but that action is exactly what Volvo has had in mind with their development of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles. During that visit, I sat down with Volvo’s Autonomous Driving Director, Marcus Rothoff, to discuss the reasoning behind autonomous cars. Volvo has set milestone after milestone for automotive safety over the past 50 decades, so imagine my surprise to hear Rothoff say that self-driving cars would create “possibilities to open up more time”, even going so far as to say that the technology would allow drivers to stay connected to the internet while they were on the road.
Don’t worry, I obeyed the rules of the road while driving the XC60.
All of this talk of inside technology might lead one to think that the spirit of the Turbo Brick has been lost to modern gadgetry, but nothing could be further from the truth. Beneath the hood of our tester was a 2.0L 4 cylinder that is boosted by both a turbo and a supercharger. Yes, you read that right. The combination generates an impressive 316 HP and 295 lb-ft and is fed to all four wheels through a slick shifting 8-speed automatic unit.
Wait…..what?
If you have ANY Volvo background, a T5 was a turbo 5-cylinder. At what point did some marketing committee decide that a 4-banger should bear the designation T-6? I know, I am crusty and old, but there is something very wrong there. Don’t get me wrong, I knew this was a four-pot Volvo, the way Uncle Olaf intended, the branding just seems off.
What is not wrong is the way the XC60 drives. Around town, with the drive mode in the default comfort position, the XC60 feels like the dreaded nice car. The comfort and technology take the lead. Move out into the country and switch the drive mode to sport however and the spirit of the Turbo Brick quickly makes itself known. Very quickly.
Honestly, during the first few days with the XC60, I was in full responsible Dad mode. The subtle R-Design logo on the rear hatch caught my eye and somehow reminded me that there was likely some fun lurking within this family machine. At the next light, I fully rolled into the throttle and was pleasantly surprised to find that the Swede is seriously quick. Quicker than many cars of the sporting variety. Sub 6 second 0-60 quick. To put that into perspective, the sort-of legendary 1989 Mustang GT (rollin’ in my 5.0) reached that standard in 6.1. A lot has changed over the years, but a four cylinder Swedish family hauler can still haul ass.
While the XC60 R-Design might not be a track ready weapon like say, a Porsche Macan GTS, it is definitely a vehicle one can have one heck of a lot of fun in and maybe embarrass a few tuner kids along the way.
On a humorous note, I learned that keeping the key fob in your pocket while washing the XC60 will cause the door lock system to spasm frequently, locking and unlocking the doors, flashing lights and wiggling the side mirrors like a curious puppy’s ears each time the brush or even water stream go near the door handles. Technology can be a weird and wonderful thing.
There was a time when Volvos were driven by science teachers, accountants and rally enthusiasts. In other words, Volvo was the car for the intelligent, the conservative and throw all caution to the wind performance fans. Today’s Volvo is a different animal. The XC60 T6 R-Design is one which still appeals to all three.
Turbo soul lives in the 2018 Volvo XC60
There have been many quirky vehicles in The Garage over the years, but one of the coolest remains the 1984 Volvo 240 Turbo wagon that we owned for a few years during the late Nineties. Officially, the longest of the turbo bricks was called a 245T. Our wagon was the exact spec that fans of the boxy speedster lusted after: A silver wagon with the correct Turbo blackout striping, Euro style grill with inset fog lights, GLT wheels and a manual transmission. It even had the dog gate which swung down from the ceiling to keep Fido in his place. Sadly, we didn’t have a Fido in those days but it was still neat to have it.
That wagon was perhaps the best family vehicle of all time. It could carry 5 adults in comfort. Fold down the rear seats and it would carry a 4×8 sheet of plywood. It looked cool as hell to those who knew and could keep pace with a Fox-body Mustang off the line. While it was a bit too big for an autocross course, the car was a joy to hustle down a winding country road, even when fully loaded.
Back in the day, Volvo used the slogan “Boxy but good” and their sporting varieties became know as Bricks and Turbo Bricks. They weren’t exactly sexy, unless you were turned on by straight lines. Fast forward three decades and our tester, an XC60 T6 R-Design couldn’t be more different. While there are straight accent lines here and there, sensual curves are the order of the day. Those curves do however push up towards muscular rear shoulders, in keeping with the brand’s heritage.
The interior of the old girl left much to be desired, as many of its surfaces were as square as the exterior. Nothing flashy or luxurious here, just black plastic and blue cloth seats in a style that only really excited a Volvo diehard. The interior of the XC60 on the other hand is nothing short of World class. Without seeming too modern, the combination of sensual curves and well chosen finish materials, the Volvo has a definite Scandinavian flair. The machined metal speaker covers are particularly striking.
Techie types will be astounded by the XC60’s incredibly user friendly infotainment system, which is centered around a 9″ centre stack touch display which operates with the fluidity of a smart phone or tablet. It gives users control over a wide range of audio and vehicle settings to tailor the vehicle experience to the individual driver.
The audio system in particular deserves a mention, as it stands out in a segment which is full of serious audio gear. The Volvo Canada media fleet guy enthusiastically pointed out that the Bowers & Wilkins system has different modes, including studio for normal music and concert hall for higher quality music. Most often, these systems seem, to my ears at least, to simply muck around with reverb settings to change the sound in the cabin. The system in the XC60 was painstakingly tuned to replicate the sound in the middle of the renowned Gothenburg Concert Hall, complete with displaying a picture of the place.
To test the system, I directed the system to play music from my bluetooth connected phone rather than the Sirius XM feed. I brought up my Google Play app and chose the Evanescence Fallen album, hit play and cranked the volume. The sound was nothing short of mind blowing. The drums or thunder or whatever the rumble is in Bring me to life, quite literally caused the vehicle to shudder. After that, a bit of vintage Pink Floyd confirmed that the XC60 offers one of the best sound systems on the market.
Back in 2014, I had the opportunity to spend a rather silly 22 hours in Gothenburg, Sweden, home to Volvo with the intention of going for a ride-a-long in the company’s first self driving car. Sadly, it was raining and the vehicle’s sensors could not “see” the markings on the road, which it used to stay in its own lane. Autonomous vehicle technology is moving forward in leaps and bounds and much of the tech that Volvo was working on three years ago is now included in the company’s Pilot Assist system.
Volvo’s tech sheets describe the system as “Semi Autonomous Drive System with Adaptive Cruise Control and Active Lane Keeping Aid”. Adaptive cruise is not a new concept and lane assist type of systems are becoming more common in the marketplace. Some of the systems offered by other manufacturers are clunky at best, disruptive at worst. Where Pilot Assist stands out is in its seamless, unobtrusive operation. Once could quite easily, gasp, look down at their phone, confident in the knowledge that the car is going to do what it is supposed to do.
You may think I have lost my mind with that statement, but that action is exactly what Volvo has had in mind with their development of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles. During that visit, I sat down with Volvo’s Autonomous Driving Director, Marcus Rothoff, to discuss the reasoning behind autonomous cars. Volvo has set milestone after milestone for automotive safety over the past 50 decades, so imagine my surprise to hear Rothoff say that self-driving cars would create “possibilities to open up more time”, even going so far as to say that the technology would allow drivers to stay connected to the internet while they were on the road.
Don’t worry, I obeyed the rules of the road while driving the XC60.
All of this talk of inside technology might lead one to think that the spirit of the Turbo Brick has been lost to modern gadgetry, but nothing could be further from the truth. Beneath the hood of our tester was a 2.0L 4 cylinder that is boosted by both a turbo and a supercharger. Yes, you read that right. The combination generates an impressive 316 HP and 295 lb-ft and is fed to all four wheels through a slick shifting 8-speed automatic unit.
Wait…..what?
If you have ANY Volvo background, a T5 was a turbo 5-cylinder. At what point did some marketing committee decide that a 4-banger should bear the designation T-6? I know, I am crusty and old, but there is something very wrong there. Don’t get me wrong, I knew this was a four-pot Volvo, the way Uncle Olaf intended, the branding just seems off.
What is not wrong is the way the XC60 drives. Around town, with the drive mode in the default comfort position, the XC60 feels like the dreaded nice car. The comfort and technology take the lead. Move out into the country and switch the drive mode to sport however and the spirit of the Turbo Brick quickly makes itself known. Very quickly.
Honestly, during the first few days with the XC60, I was in full responsible Dad mode. The subtle R-Design logo on the rear hatch caught my eye and somehow reminded me that there was likely some fun lurking within this family machine. At the next light, I fully rolled into the throttle and was pleasantly surprised to find that the Swede is seriously quick. Quicker than many cars of the sporting variety. Sub 6 second 0-60 quick. The Found Stone
Our ancestors, the witches who came before us, understood and respected the inherent power in the world around us. Sources of unlimited power were all around them, waiting to be tapped into and redirected. The flowing stream, the blustery wind, leaves, grass, and even the stones underfoot all held power. Like our ancestors, we too can draw power from that which can be found and made.
One such item, the found stone, has been around each of us throughout our lives. Have you ever had a pebble get suck in your shoe? Have you ever kicked a stone down the sidewalk? What about that stone that your bare foot finds? These small stones are messengers put into your path for some specific purpose. Think back to childhood and remember the “treasures” you would stuff into your pockets to bring home to show your parents? I still have some of the rocks my children brought me!
Just like crystals, the found stone is imbued with an energy very well suited for spells and rituals. Not only do they come with an inherent malleable energy, they come into your life purposefully. Have you ever been out walking and picked up a rock? What about that single stone drew your attention? Why that stone when there were so many others around? When a stone crosses your path, it’s almost as though it’s on a mission to lend you its energy, its power!
These little treasures can be used as protective charms, divination aids, healing aids, etc. Feel the energy and let it tell you how and where to use it. Like clear Quartz crystals, found stones can be programmed for any use by cleansing and charging it.
Once you’ve found your stone (or stones…I can’t go on hikes these days without bringing pockets full of stones home with me), start with physically cleaning the stone. When you do this, be open to any impressions you get from the stone; it may reveal its purpose to you at this stage. Once the stone is physically clean, feel its energy to see if you need to take the cleansing a step further. If so, immerse the stone in water while rubbing it with your hands. Let your energy transfer from your hands to the stone, cleansing it of any residual counterproductive energies. When you remove the stone from the water, those discarded energies will remain in the water.
The next step is to charge your stone, preparing it for magical use. Make sure you know what you want to use the stone for. As you’re charging the stone focus on a single magical goal for the energy it contains. When you’re trying to do too much with a single stone (and this applies to any magical charging), the magic can get muddled because the energy doesn’t have a clear channel for action. Hold your stone firmly in your dominant hand while you close your eyes and center yourself. Vocalize your intention for the stone (i.e. “I charge this stone for protection” or “this stone will radiate happiness and joy”). Focus on your intention and push that energy into the stone. You’ll feel the energy rise in your hand, perhaps manifesting as a tingle or a warmth. Hold tight to your intention until the energy in your hand changes (the heat may cool or the tingle stop). Be open to what is happening because it may evolve differently for you than it does for me. Once that energy changes, your stone is charged and ready to be used.
Carry your charged stone in your pocket, add it to a charm bag, use it in conjunction with candle spells, and so on. Your stone is versatile and ready to assist you in a variety of magical ways. The world around us is filled with magic and wonder, and your found stone is a tangible reminder of how accessible that magical energy and power is to each of us.
Blessed be!
