Last year on Halloween I got an 8$ shoulder lenght silver wig at the walmart and trimmed it using craft scissors to get an appropriate wig for a last minute Andy Warhol’s costume and like...It looked pretty bad but I swear on everything Holy that it was better than this and if that’s not sad I don’t know what is

i have like a rec list of ‘genuinely these shows are GOOD, like Top Quality, All Around Excellent.’ And then another that’s like “this sure is An Experience” and they absolutely do not have to be good at all to make that list just absolutely an Experience, Something sure Somethingggg. They have a Vibe. Some of them do HAPPEN to also be genuinely good quality all around. But some of them are partially or fully hot messes. They do not have to be good to be on the ‘wow that was Something’ list. But i loved watching them because Wow WERE they Something.

Shows that Sure Are Something:

Men With Sword (1 + 2) - this baby is Sure Something. A world of all gay men and kings and political struggles and romantic tragedies that made me cry, and nice wigs with random rainbow color highlights, and cheap local theatre sets and??? Just wow the first ep is a miniature example of what ur about to sign up for. Also literally anything with opening songs I love i sort of Will Love. I cannot even explain this show. Just watch the first ep. Do you like gay romantic tragedies and want like 4-8? Do you want to see cool anime hair? Idk Murong Li is iconic, Qi Zhikan and Jian Bin made me cry, but also How the fuck does this show exist. This show’s concept is so ??!!! And I want more. 

The Lost Tomb (1) - sure is Something. Mr Emo looking like the 2000s peak idea of cool, does not speak has a sword and a hoodie and a big tattoo on his chest half naked half the time and just keeps saving our damsel in distress protagonist. Weird bugs, tomb raider shennanigans, immortals and questions and ??? So much gayer than anyone expects. Literally anything could happen. Among the dmbj dramas its quite possibly the worst in terms of budget and wtf it was doing??? But it is an Experience. Its only 10 eps. I was certainly curious about wtf it was ALL about lol. Zhang Qiling alone and the sheer questions he raised in combo with being the Peak of what was cool when I was 12, and a completely baffling amount of over the top action life saving moments and just gratuitous shirtless Yang Yang and??? You know what its fine

Guardian* - even if you hate it this is genuinely Peak everything i desire in my media so actually for me this is also just hands down near-perfect. But also it is just Something ToT The horrific cgi cat, the evil twin with white hair, the bisexual lead who taught someone how to suck on a lolipop -o-, the time travel 10k year love story, the sheer Vibes of supernatural/sci fi mashup which like yes i get its less coherent than the much tighter defined novel But if u want a Fun Weird Time its inherently very Star Trek/Doctor Who to just have ‘whatever the fuck is going on here.’ Gives me that star trek tos experience of ‘cool i guess they’re meeting Abraham Lincoln/Adonis/A planet of 1930s gangsters.’ And tbh i love it. Also Shen Wei dresses like a dude in a manga who’s super into over the top dresswear, i love this disaster. also gays in space

Go Princess Go - yes eventually it does turn on the breaks a little and almost become a Normal Drama. But for most of it? This premise is a bi playboy sexist man time travels and becomes a princess in a period drama timeline, has to learn to respect women and some princes drag him into the political mess. their sponsors are like viagra so the jokes are Off The Rails, this princess is slutting it up with every woman within reach and getting into the Most with the princes, everything is the cheapest budget you’ve ever seen and it is a disaster but wow is it fucking fun ToT slapstick comedy combined with the off the rails premise and is it good? is it high quality? Well -o-;; it sure is Something! While I’m sure the korean take on this - Mr. Queen - probably had better writing, MUCH better budget, and maybe a bit more sophisticated comedy. I also heard that show had a very sucky ending (of which i’m scared cause i wanted to watch that show). And like, while Go Princess Go isn’t ‘good’ quality by any means? IT is a fun messy dumb time ok. Full disclosure i did not finish this show cause when it got more serious i was like where is the Fucking Wildness i signed up for. But in my defense i was busy, and drop a lot of stuff, and again i hear go princess go ended happier than the kdrama take on this premise Mr. Queen so. 

Once Upon A Time on Lingjian Mountain - IF you like cultivation shows, comedy, satire, dominant annoying older women who aren’t conventionally likable but instead that typical man antihero archtype? This show has some points where I admit, it takes itself seriously and is almost a genuine show. Its also to be fair actually of good quality for decent portions. It is a kind of satire on cultivation stories, but what makes it !!!! is just how WOW ok it is. We got bl, bg, gl, found family, boy bands all in the main storylines! You want a bl played as joke/serious over the top as My Roommate is a Detective, an older lady disaster who’s into girl-Naruto? A bg love story where they’re both fucking bi nightmare gremlins? The lead heroine being just so funny and sharp and Regina Mills combined with a drunk Zhou Zishu on a good day? Did I mention one of the main characters is just girl-Naruto??? This show is so much wtf combined with any trope even mildly cultivator drama related they could shove in and make fun of, but then it takes itself seriously a while and you CRY and are like this fucker made me CRY ToT I can’t even describe it really just that its having the time of its life with trope city satire and reusing the same limited soundtrack (But i happen to love the songs lol) Somehow, i suspect The King’s Avatar might have this shows vibe but more serious. I have not finished this but i intend to. The only warning i’d give is it Does swing between hardcore satire of so much and also taking itself seriously, which is like Very Worth the odd experience on the one hand? But also means u gotta be in kind of a unique mood to watch it since if u just go in for comedy it might start getting genuine, but if u go in for genuine it will rip that up to pieces lol. 

Till Death Tear Us Apart* - (also shout out to Love is More Than a Word which SHOULD be watched too along with this but... tdtua was my favorite of the two so I’m only going into that one). Is it good? Debatable. I loved it to pieces though and watched it in 2 days so it gets a special star though. Is it fun? YES. Is it Something?? oh baby. It a spy teacher on par with Shen Wei’s vibe and his sugar daddy who won’t quit, its the most dumbass twink spy ever as a hitman falls in love, its a hot morally probably evil Big Sister who’s too hot, its action city with so little budget but WOW is it fun to watch. its a happy ending train chase scene where i know the loved ones all leave to go get a house and adopt a kid! its flirting with tea and cake as airplanes drop bombs. its like the Mummy but longer and ??!! And there’s a fucking scene referencing soulmates and Past Lives and if you HAVE seen Love is More Than A Word then THAT scene will hit you like a freight train. Single handedly this show made me willing to check out any republican era drama so its this baby’s fault i watched My Roommate is a Detective, thanks uvu.

LORD Critical World - I have Barely watched this baby. Barely. But I KNOW i’m going to watch more. Why? Because it looks like a fucking hot mess. Bad cgi mythical animals? Main dude with white hair? Guys who just spiritually bond like idk is this a vulcan mind meld im confused is this that parabatai Shadowhunters thing? The main two give me xena/gabrielle vibes (which is enough - and anything xena esque feels like Something that’s gonna give me a Wild Ride just like xena does, so). WHAT is this mess? I have no idea but it looks like a Time and i intend to have it.

Time Raiders* (movie) - i have seen this, its part of the dmbj cinematic universe ToT I’m putting a star because I WOULD ARGUE its actually good. Granted, if you watch the nice high quality looking one its much easier to have this opinion versus if you watched the low quality one i first saw on youtube and thought it had the worst budget ever and was like a sci fi channel bad movie ToT. Anyway, having seen dmbj shows, the movie? Its kinda decent. It is a good time. And is it a TIME? Oh yes. Babe it is SUCH a time. Its an experience. Even if you hated it i feel like it would leave An Impression. If you’ve experienced even ONE episode of dmbj, it will also leave an intense wtf impression where this movie makes you fucking ponder whenever u remember it exists. We got soulmates, an emo batman, sexy fights! Monsters, bad cgi, tentacle alien? immortal? very Queen of the Damned villain? Romance tropes up the wazoo who knows why, steampunk ass tomb design cause? Cause why??! Cause it looked cool?!! Like everything about this movie is “someone thought This must’ve been cool, they must have been having Fun’ and that’s the vibe. Is it god quality lol no. Is it Something. I cannot stop thinking about it. (ALSO: this is a movie but its show adjacent. ALSO: I’d argue any dmbj property is the ‘this is something’ rec category all those some are better genuine quality than others, some are weirder quality if u just want a hot mess to make ur brain melt - tlt2 has fucking cyborgs ok i don’t know what to tell u, tomb of the sea has a giant tentacle monster in the opening scene like? dmbj is for a good time not a time that makes any goddamn sense... u go in for the Wild Time. if ur looking for quality tho i suspect tlt3, tomb of the sea, and Reboot are objectively the best production quality)

Bureau of Transformer* - look i considered putting this. its a star because its actually super good quality like this one is objectively production/writing/etc as good as Person of Interest or In the Flesh. Its probably too good to be in the ‘hot mess’ appeal right? But then i remembered the mutant take for this show is like animorphs. We got cat people in the first ep (which look so much better than the cats movie or else i’d have ran). We got fun well done action movie chases, comedy, its a delight. We got a woman who Cuts Herself In Half and its fucking horrifying. We got a bear man who tries to commit suicide constantly and fails and is real chill over it all at this point. A poor fish man who’s stuck in an acting loop that made me think about my life for months. We got a donkey man pretending he’s a tiger (i swear to fuck this makes sense in context). I forgot we have this wild setup constantly when the writing is so tight and perfect and the moral themes are so applicable to the real world they hit me hard and made me fucking meditate on the world long after i stopped watching. Angel wishes it had what this short 24 ep show has (and Angel is even one of my favorite shows but). This show is like Black Mirror but make it more optimistic and hopeful, Star Trek but No Filler (i swear every fucking minor detail even a Missing Dog WILL have a huge impact god the Writing on this show in deliberation and well done planning reminds me of Person of Interest a ton). While I always remember it fondly as just pretty overall wonderful quality, it is also... objectively... going to give you a Ride. No one is prepared for what a missing dog storyline WILL do to you. No one is ready for the head almost sawed open scene in ep 1. The girl who cuts herself in half will not leave ur memory. Also there’s so much silly dumb light moments, and the writing is so Good it never made one choice i hated. But back to the wild point - BAT boy! Weird ass Fox people! I am desperate to rewatch this now that i’m remembering how batshit some of the scenes were. its a shame i don’t have iqiyi since that’s the only place with subs.

 i might add more if my brain works? i haven’t seen the following but i suspect they’re in this category of Sure Something: Mystic Nine, Tomb of the Sea (any dmbj property tbh), Tientsin Mystic (i am just Guessing), Ancient Detective* (i’ve heard its wuxia/detective mix which is certainly unique tho i haven’t heard of the plot being Wild the way dmbj just has fucking dopplegangers and tentacle monsters at random), SCI Mystery (all i know is its gay and incredibly ??! Something). maybe 3 Will Be Free (incredibly unique show but like Bureau of Transformer i do think its so overall good i’m not sure if i should list it).
